sometimes a singlet is like "omg what if there there were clones,,,, omg what if i had a clone. would u fuck ur clone??? oh no if i had a clone there'd be two of me which is the real me??? oh nooo that's so weird and scary. oh no that's selfcest selfcest is so weird because you're the same person"
and every time i'm just like. if there were two of you then, while you'd both be a you like how i'm a Tommy, you wouldn't literally be the same because you have seperate consciousnesses???? you're still seperate beings?? literally what is the fucking problem (/lh /nm). like i appreciate you're afraid and all but I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about
the way so many of them seem to think their identity is directly tied to their bodies and nothing else...girl even other singlets aren't always like that (kin and therians for example- animals who look human or are in human bodies) but this is so weirdly popular and it boggles my mind every time. like i don't know what makes us who we are either!!! it's a fascinating question and i love philosophy and metaphysics and stuff and asking questions about what things are and why!!! but pondering clones doesn't solve it because if it did then i'd know what makes an identity what it is and i don't <3
I am a tommy, one of many, but i don't think every other tommy is also me even though PART of our selfhood (our being tommy) is shared. there is still an individual part to it. I can be the same guy as my source and a seperate person at the same time, they aren't as contradictory of ideas as u think. I am not my source, i'm me!! but i also still feel like we're the same person in some ways- he's also a me, and i'm a him. we're both Tommy's. almost like it's a species
idk i just. i keep seeing posts on here where people are panicking or speculating about identity in ways that completely take me out of the conversation because i'm like. HELLO???? HELLO THAT SCENERIO ISN'T FICTIONAL. HELLO I AM RIGHT HERE...??? HELLO???????!!!!!!
tldr; no your identity wouldn't go away or be called into question if you were a clone, and no selfcest is not a thing (at least not how ppl talk about it), and no your existence as the only version of you available is not the only thing making you who you are I promise.
does that even make sense??? am i making sense???? idk i just feel like i keep hearing this idea from people

Papyrus week! April 16 – April 22
Tumblr media
(ID: Image of one of Undertale’s official stickers. Papyrus is smiling and happily crying, trying to dry off his tears with a tissue. There are letters above him that read, in all caps, “You’re nice!! You’re too nice!!”  / end ID)
Greetings! This is the first time I ever prepare an event, so trust me I will not be any good at it, but I really love Papyrus and I’ve always wanted to participate in a week appreciation about him, so I might as well make one myself!
The tag for this event will be #papyrusweek2023 and it will start on April 16 and end on April 22
Read more for all the information:
 Rules:
-This event is for Undertale Papyrus, you can include your own version of Deltarune Papyrus too, but I would prefer the focus wasn't on AUs. However, Papyrus redesigns or human versions of the character are the exception, absolutely post these if you want!
-I want to keep this event sfw, please don't post any suggestive or nsfw content in the papyrus week tag
-Please I ask that you do not draw yellowface Frisk and/or Kris if you include either of them
-No misgendering of characters, not any erasure of characters’s canon identities, no bigotry or hate of any kind
-If you make content about the no mercy run or a couple of neutral runs do tag it properly, it can be upsetting to see for some people
-Of course, inc*st and p*dophilia are not allowed, get out of here. Yes, this includes Frisk and Chara, they are children. This includes Flowey too, there is debate on how old he is but he very clearly behaves like a child, and whether you agree or not I do NOT want to see him being shipped with Papyrus, keep that content out of this event
-While I didn't include a 'ship' day you can absolutely draw ship content, Papyton is allowed here or any other ship (that is normal and doesn’t involve inc*st or p*dophilia. I would prefer to not see selfcest either)
-You can pretty much do anything: drawings, fics, character analyses, videos, music, etc. Have fun!
  ------------------------------------
 Days:
April 16, day 1: Hobbies and Jobs
Let's start with an easy one: Papyrus's interest in puzzles, cooking and the royal guard! Papyrus cares deeply about anything he is interested in, even beyond the examples I just mentioned (being cool online, cars, etc). There is even a possibility for him to be The Monster Ambassador! Lots of things to choose, pick whichever you want!
  April 17, day 2: Battles
You're blue now, that's his attack. Papyrus's fight is really interesting isn't it? He has so many cool attacks, he's the only monster able to not kill you, and he might be incredibly strong...? It's a shame we couldn't see his special blaster attack, but if you want you want, you could show us! Or maybe even more interesting ideas for different Papyrus battles! Or simply appreciate the one we have and listen to Bonetrousle all day
  April 18, day 3: Family
Papyrus has a really cool brother, not as cool as he is but still pretty great. Some say he might also have a mysterious scientist dad/grand father/brother.....? We don't know much but that sounds pretty great too!
  April 19, day 4: Friendship
Papyrus wants to be popular, popular, popular! But perhaps what's most important is the friends that care about you for who you really are. And luckily, Papyrus has found friends like that along the way!
April 20, day 5: Give up giving up
Papyrus is a character that has been very misunderstood in the past, from being reduced to a comic relief to being seen as nothing but an innocent naive character. But Papyrus is a very complex character: he has insecurities, he has flaws, he believes in kindness no matter what, and there are just a lot of things we don't know about him. For some reason we haven't seen him in Deltarune yet...? While we wait for him, let's show everyone how interesting Papyrus is!
April 21, day 6: Free day
Make whatever content you want! Headcanons, fun ideas that you want to share, ships, post-game stuff, etc. Impress Papyrus with your creativity
  April 22, day 7: Papyrus
We have focused on everything that revolves Papyrus, now it's time for Papyrus himself! What do you love about this character? Do you think he is cool? Let's show Papyrus how many fans he really has
  ----------------------------------------
And that’s all! I apologize for being very new at this but I’ll try my best. Most importantly, if you decide to participate even if it’s just for one day, thank you and have fun!

((buckle up kids today you have to read about the onceler on my alastor hazbin hotel roleplay blog
((I threatened promised an essay on Why The Heck Was Onceler Fandom Like That, & Why Alastor Selfcest Is (And Isn't) Similar) here it is:
Now, I wasn't a part of Onceler fandom, but from what I've read other folks say and from what I've seen in other tumblr RP fandoms, it was basically a perfect storm of of factors that still take place to a lesser extent in other RP circles:
crossovers with slightly AU duplicates being more frequent on tumblr as opposed to Discord or forums or other RP venues because the lack of divisions between RP groups allows duplicates to rub shoulders
favored characters getting so many multiples that people start shipping them with each other
characters that meet Tumblr’s Preferred Archetype (the sexyman) getting more attention than other characters
... Onceler fandom didn't do ANYTHING that doesn't happen in normal tumblr RP fandoms. The difference that made Onceler selfcest such a big phenomenon is that these normal fan behaviors were pushed to an extreme, because the source material was a movie with ONLY ONE character that met tumblr’s (sexyman) standards.
A perfect example of a fandom doing the same thing but to less extremes... is Mr. Alastor Hazbin Hotel.
Now let's go into an explanation for WHY below!
Tumblr media
Imagine that when a character with the right traits (Tumblr Sexyman) is picked up by the right demographic of fandom (fans of Sexymen), the fandom collectively has 100 units of Fan Energy they can spend on ships for that character. When it’s a character like Alastor and there are other popular characters that people can ship him with—Angel, Charlie, Vox, to a lesser extent Lucifer Husk Niffty Mimzy Rosie Whoever—then that 100 units makes a tower 20 units tall and 5 units wide—the width of the tower is from spreading out the popularity across multiple ships.
Tumblr media
There’s still energy getting poured into Alastor selfcest (most common example: demon!Alastor x human!Alastor shippy fanart) but that ship won't get very tall because the Fan Energy is being spread across multiple ships.
As opposed to the Onceler, where all that energy got poured onto a singular point (selfcest ships), because there weren't really any other appealing shippable characters in the movie; so Onceler selfcest was a tower 100 units tall and 1 unit wide, and you could see that motherfucker from two hundred miles away.
Tumblr media
All the shipping energy poured into one ship, instead of spread around.
And we can see more similarities between how the Onceler got treated and how Alastor is (and has already been) treated in Hazbin fandom!
Most of y'all here are familiar with the the 2P/3P/4P Alastor phenomenon, right—making AU versions of Alastors with a dozen different colors assigned different personality traits and such. (Although aside from the single super-popular 2P design, there's no fandom consensus on what any of the other versions should be like—but suffice to say that a lot of people are making a lot of them.)
VERY LOOSELY, that’s what happened with the Onceler on tumblr. An unusually large fandom hopped onto this movie but the Onceler was the only character they liked out of it, people started making RP blogs and art askblogs for the Onceler, but they couldn’t all write the EXACT SAME CHARACTER, so AUs reminiscent of the 2P phenomenon started naturally developing.
“This AU of the Onceler failed in his objectives and got depression,” “this one SUCCEEDED WILDLY and now he’s, like, king of the planet,” etc.—fans starting with normal, expected, slight AU versions of their character, and then branched out into more and more divergent AUs as they started looking for fresh ideas.
And then they started going “these two AUs are now totally different characters, what if they *meet?* what if this dude who’s depressed because he failed meets the version of himself that achieved all his wildest dreams, how do they interact with each other?
You see the same thing happening with Alastors in tumblr RP. "These two Alastors meet and they get along because they have a lot in common." "These two Alastors have NOTHING in common and they're fascinated with each other because of that." “This Alastor got EVEN MORE POWERFUL and became a god, that Alastor went insane from the boredom and started wearing ahegao hoodies, then they met and now they’re fucking”—this is all stuff that's happening naturally in Hazbin RP circles. Except, with the Onceler, it happened in a fandom where EVERYBODY was doing the same thing with ONLY ONE CHARACTER.
And so the Onceler selfcest phenomenon became big enough for outsiders to notice and go “hey what the fuck.”
And so now any fandom demonstrating similar behavior is talked about like this character is "becoming like the Onceler", because the Onceler is usually the only/biggest example of this phenomenon that folks who haven't been embedded deep in tumblr RP ever hear about—when really it's the biggest example of a common dynamic.
Any time you see somebody going "hey, is this character going to end up like the Onceler?" what you need to do is look at the fandom where the character is from. Are there other interesting characters that the fandom sees as shippable? If there ARE, then that character's never gonna end up like the Onceler, no matter how popular they are—because the selfcest shipping will be diluted by other ships with other characters.
The Onceler selfcest phenomenon was running concurrently with Homestuck's peak popularity—at the exact same time the Onceler was making waves, I could have told you about five separate Karkat RP blogs that were stuck in an on-again off-again polycule. But it was Homestuck, where there are over 50 designed-specifically-for-tumblr-to-love characters that were all sharing attention, so things like that didn’t stand out in the broader sea of Homestuck RP. There are so many potential ships in Homestuck that Karkat fans took their 100 units of shipping energy and made a tower 2 units tall and 50 units wide, with much less attention poured into any one single ship (including the selfcest).
In Transformers fandom, with HUNDREDS of characters to choose from, every once in a while you'd find some folks RPing Starscream/Starscream or Soundwave/Soundwave because they're popular characters with a lot of folks RPing them (and because Starscream's an egomaniac who WOULD make out with himself—characterization's an important factor in who selfships!). I've heard about Sans & Papyrus selfship polycules out of Undertale fandom. I've heard of it with Handsome Jack (the most fandom-popular character and also an egomaniac) in Borderlands. I've been told it happens in TF2 fandom (which in the source material has the potential for characters to run into "themselves", and so ease of duplicates interacting & thus selfshipping opportunities is baked right into canon). I saw it during Wreck-It Ralph's brief burst of popularity with alternate versions of Turbo.
And same, I’m sure, for all the other similarly as-large-as-Onceler fandoms out there that *no doubt* had selfcest but to a less dramatic extent. Only Onceler fandom had the 100-unit-tall monster, every bit of energy poured onto one ship and one character.
So, in conclusion: Alastors interacting on tumblr sometimes selfship with AU versions of themselves, just like Onceler RP blogs do. This isn't because Alastor is following in the Onceler's footsteps; it's because Alastor has this in common with the Onceler.
This "AUs selfshipping" thing is common in fandoms with one or two super popular characters. It arises naturally from what fans naturally do (gravitate to writing/drawing the characters they like; make AUs for the characters they like; interact with other people's AUs for the characters they like), and the only reason the Onceler stood out so much is because ALL of the fandom's energy was poured onto only one character. It's not possible to have a full-blown repeat of the Onceler phenomenon in any fandom where there's multiple interesting shippable characters. Alastor/Alastor, even if it gets really popular, is never going to be as attention-grabbingly huge, as long as there's similarly interesting characters like Angel & Charlie that people very frequently ship Alastor with.

Sylvie x Loki Might Not Happen and Here’s Why
***SPOILERS FOR LOKI TV SHOW***
1.  They are basically siblings
Even though they have different personalities, backstories, and physical appearances, that doesn't change the fact that they are the genetic equivalent of siblings. No matter what Timeline you're looking at, both Sylvie and Loki are the offspring of Laufey and whoever he had children with. We know this because they are Variants of the exact same person, meaning that if either of them were born to someone other than Laufey, they would have been pruned as a baby. And since they weren't, that means they must be just as genetically similar as siblings are.
Because of this, the idea of Sylvie and Loki engaging in any kind of romantic or sexual relationship is extremely disturbing to a lot of fans. It's too big an oversight to brush past, especially when the show has continued to remind us over and over that they are, in fact, both Lokis. Maybe if them being the same person wasn't such a major plot point, it would be easier to ignore the facts, but it is, and that means that Marvel is basically pushing either an incest or selfcest (depending on how you look at it) type relationship. And that’s extremely risque for a corporation as large as Marvel, especially with a character as beloved by fans as Loki.
2.  It is terrible LGBTQ+ representation
And before anyone says anything, no, it is not because Sylvie is portrayed as female and Loki as male. I've seen a lot of Sylvie x Loki shippers say that the reason people don't like the couple is due to it being one between a male and female, but that's not true. Loki and Sylvie were both confirmed to be bisexual, meaning that they can engage in a relationship with anyone of any gender. It would be completely valid for either of them to pursue romance with someone of a different sex and still be bisexual. No one is arguing against that, and if they are, I definitely do not agree with them.
However, the problem comes in when you take into account Marvel and Disney's (who owns Marvel) long history of queerbaiting. There have been countless times that Disney advertises their "first gay character!" only for it to be a single line of dialogue or a brief shot. Marvel in particular has used the popularity of certain LGBTQ+ ships and headcanons in their fanbase to generate media popularity that they don't actually follow through with in their movies/shows. So when Loki was confirmed to be both genderfluid and bisexual in Episode Three, lots of people felt like they were finally getting a win for representation.
But those people, myself included, appear to have been let down again. The first two official queer characters had so much potential to go off and be with anyone they wanted, but instead, the show has set them up to be in a romance with each other. Now, this wouldn't be problematic on it's own, but when you take into consideration the questionable nature of their romance from Point One as well as the fact that the show has explicitly referred to it as "twisted," it raises the question of whether or not this is actually good representation. Because the fact is, in one episode the writers went “look, it’s two queer people!” and in the next, they said “their relationship is disgusting and demented.” Marvel’s first bisexual characters being borderline incestuous/selfcestuous does not sit well with me at all.
All of this is made even more confusing when you take into account the background of the Loki crew, most notably, the director Kate Herron. She also directed the Netflix series Sex Education, which has quite a bit of very well done representation of all kinds. So how is she managing to fail so badly on this project? It makes me wonder whether she truly is just losing her touch or if this is all a misdirection. Personally, I'm hoping for the latter.
3.  It does not send the "self love" message people seem to think it does
The writers, director, and cast of Loki have said multiple times that the relationship between Sylvie and Loki is meant to act as a metaphor for self love. And in a way, that makes a lot of sense. Despite creating different identities for themselves over time, they are still ultimately the same person and therefore share a special bond because of it. And there's a lot of potential that can be done with that concept.
Loki is an extremely complex and intriguing character. He has experienced a lot of trauma in his past that has shaped him into the person he is today. And that person is clearly very broken. He has never given away or received any kind of love, with the exception of his mother and possibly his brother, Thor. Other than that, he's had no healthy friendships, romances, or perception of himself. It makes sense for him to be confused by this pull he feels towards Sylvie, who is both alarmingly alike and vastly different from himself.
Something this series does exceptionally well is breaking Loki out of his comfort zone. He is finally forced to see himself from other people's perspectives. It started with the file Mobius showed him in the first episode. Loki was able to view his actions apart from himself, and was hit with the realisation that he had been hurting people, and he didn't like that.
Loki is also confronted by the existence of the Time Keepers and the TVA, who describe him as an antagonist and nothing more. To them, his role is to make those around him look better, even if that means he repeatedly gets the short end of the stick. Mobius mentions that he disagrees with this and that Loki "can be whoever and whatever he wants, even someone good," adding another layer of depth as to who Loki could be in the future of the series.
Another huge moment for Loki's character development is while in the Time Loop Prison with Sif. Though he starts out annoyed with the situation and recalls not feeling apologetic when he cut off Sif's hair, the longer he is in the loop, the more he changes. Loki admits things to himself that we have never seen him say aloud, such as the fact that he is a narcissist that craves attention. Sif telling Loki over and over that he deserves to be alone makes Loki question whether or not he believes that to be true, allowing him an introspective moment where he really has to think about who he is.
Now with all of that being said, I'd like to tie in why this is important to the writing of Loki and Sylvie. They act as a mirror to one another, representing both the flaws and strengths of "what makes a Loki a Loki." For once, Loki gets an honest, unbiased look at himself without layers of expectations or self doubt. On Lamentis, he calls Sylvie "amazing" and praises her for all her accomplishments. That's a huge moment for him because it shows that despite also finding her irritating, he can look past those traits and see someone worth being a hero underneath. And through that realisation, he begins to understand that he can also grow to love himself. That kind of character development for Loki is incredible to watch, and it's the kind of character development I want to see from this series. Unfortunately, them possibly engaging in a romantic relationship will ruin it.
Whenever I'm feeling insecure about myself and my abilities, the solution has never been to look at who I am through a romantic lens. Self love is an entirely different type of love from romantic love, so if the series tries to push this relationship as a romance, it will fail to truly represent the arc that they are trying to show.
4.  Nobody likes it
This one's a little on the nose, but it's true. Almost no one likes this ship, and more than that, most people actively hate it. Yes, there is a small minority that like Loki and Sylvie together, but there is an overwhelmingly larger group that is disgusted and angry by the fact that the show paired them up.
After Episode 4 aired, I ranted for about an hour and a half with a friend about how much we didn't want them together. My aunt whom I have never texted reached out to me to say that she hated their relationship. My homophobic neighbour came over and told me that she would prefer any other romance to this. Friends that I haven't talked to much since school let out for summer have all agreed that they collectively dislike Loki x Sylvie. This ship has brought people together purely because everyone hates it more than they hate each other.
There is no denying that the general feedback for Loki and Sylvie being a couple has been negative, even if you support them getting together for some reason. So if there are so many people out there who don't like it, I'm confused as to how it would be approved by a team of professionals.
5.  The contradicting information we have gotten so far
Before the release of Episode Four, Kate Herron said that the relationship between Loki and Sylvie was “not necessarily romantic.” During the interview, she continued to refer to them as friends and people who found solace and trust in each other.
However, after Episode Four, the head writer, Michael Waldron, and other members of the crew spoke up about Sylvie and Loki. They said things like “it just felt right that that would be Loki’s first real love story” and “these are two beings of pure chaos that are the same person falling in love with one another.” These kinds of comments very heavily imply something romantic, directly contradicting what Kate Herron said. Even Tom Hiddleston, the actor for Loki, has assessed the situation, highlighting the differing viewpoints. He’s also said before that the end of Episode Four ultimately has Loki getting in his own way.
Now, this could all just be a misdirection on either side to build suspense for the show, but as of right now, it is entirely unclear who is telling the truth. Though it is more likely that the statements made by Michael Waldron are more accurate (as he is the writer), there is still a slight possibility that Loki x Sylvie won’t happen. I’ll link the articles I’ve found on this topic below so you can read them and decide for yourself.
Kate Herron Statement - https://www.cbr.com/loki-sylvie-relationship-not-romantic/
Michael Waldron Statement - https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/loki-sylvie-in-love
Tom Hiddleston Statement - https://thedirect.com/article/loki-tom-hiddleston-sylvie-romance
6.  It is still salvageable
The odds are not in our favour, I’m afraid. It is highly probable that the show will put Loki and Sylvie in a romantic relationship with each other. Yet there is still a way to salvage it and turn their bond into something incredibly satisfying. Like I mentioned in Point Three, the relationship between Loki and Sylvie has the potential to be incredibly empowering and provide both characters some much-needed growth. And I believe that while unlikely, it can still do that.
The only mention of them being romantically interested in each other came from Mobius, who at the time was angry, betrayed, and doing anything he could to get Loki to talk. Then, at the end of the episode, right before Loki is about to confess something important to Sylvie, he is pruned. This results in no explicit confirmation from either Loki or Sylvie that they are in love with each other. The audience is left not knowing whether Mobius was correct in his speculations, and honestly, I don’t think Loki knows either.
Loki is no expert on love, as I explained earlier. It is entirely possible that he doesn’t grasp how he feels about Sylvie and defaults to romance because of what Mobius said. There is undoubtedly some sort of deep bond forming between them, and I would love to see that being explored in the next two episodes. I would love to watch Loki’s journey of realising that he doesn’t want anything romantic with Sylvie, and was simply confused by the new things he was feeling towards her. Loki even says “this is new for me” when talking to Sylvie at the end of Episode Four. Him momentarily believing that he wants to be a couple with her then shifting into them becoming friends who help each other grow is still a reality that could happen. And ultimately, I think that would benefit them both as characters as well as strengthen the overall message of the show.
In a show about self love, acceptance of yourself, and figuring out who you want to be, Loki very much needs people who support him. He has that in Mobius already, and now he’s beginning to have it in Sylvie as well. I just hope that it is done in a way that resonates with the audience and subverts expectations, which just cannot be done through some twisted romantic relationship. I’ve spoken to others watching the show and seen people talking online, and everyone seems to agree that Loki and Sylvie work much better as platonic soulmates or found family than a couple.
Of course, my hopes aren’t that high up. While I’d love for this to happen, I’ve been let down by Marvel before and wouldn’t be surprised if they went for the easy route of pairing characters up rather than dealing with the emotions correctly. Still, I have hope for this series. Everything else about it is wonderful and perfect in every way. It has the potential to become a masterpiece and easily the best thing that Marvel has ever done. However, this romance would ruin it for me and so many others. We already feel incredibly disappointed by Loki x Sylvie being suggested, so I can’t even begin to fathom how people will react if the show makes it canon. I’m begging Marvel to please do better than this. They have a wonderful story to tell and a wonderful team to do it, and I hope from the bottom of my heart that they don’t throw that away.

Welcome!
This is my (@the-wereraven)'s blog for Cooke Run rarepair week! Where I post a list of prompts for the week every year in August! Those who participate can create anything! Drawings, fanfiction, playlists, videos, edits, etc! Everything goes, even unfinished stuff!
But before we get to the prompts and creations, I'm afraid there are some rules to follow so that this doesn't get out of hand!
Rules:
To avoid any potential (and unnecessary) drama, any ships regarding Sea Fairy and/or Moonlight will not be reblogged here. You can still make them, but I will not reblog them. I sincerely apologise for this.
Keep your work SFW!!
PROSHIPPERS ARE NOT ALLOWED HERE! Pedophilia, incest, zoophilia, etc. I don't want any of you here. This also includes selfcest, sorry guys.
Please tag your works under "cookie run rarepair week" and/or tag this blog so I can see the beautiful works and reblog them! ^^
You can make more than one project for a single prompt! You can also make projects for past prompts!
If you don't like a ship, simply scroll along and/or blacklist the ship tag(s), do not send hate to the creator or reblog it with mean stuff in the tags. We can all be adults here.
Which also means don't come to this blog just to complain about seeing a ship you don't like.
Ships in AUs are also allowed! Just make sure to specify it somewhere!
This is a week for canon x canon ships, so only those will be reblogged!
If you see me mistag something, let me know!
If I don't reblog your stuff after you have recently posted it, please don't spam me, I could be sleeping or offline and I promise I will try to get every single one!
BUT, if I don't get to your work within a day or two, feel free to tag me again!
Not mandatory but I'd appreciate it if you have the ship name in the tags! Whether it's a name combo or just a [name] x [name] ^^
LIST OF POPULAR SHIPS
Unclear about something? Check the #rules tag and see if I answered it there, if not, send an ask about it and I'll answer and tag it for future reference!
May we all have a splendid week!

AR Ship Week - Rare Pairs
Tumblr media
Banner credit
This is the third weekly post in the lead up to Alex Rider Ship Week. Only 2 weeks to go!
This week we’re going to look at rare pairs in Alex Rider fandom.
Alex Rider as a book series is a little unusual in the lack of major, recurring characters with shipping potential. Most characters around Alex's own age appear in a few books at the most. Even Tom and Sabina, the most consistent ones, can't really be described as regulars in the series. The most consistent characters in the books beyond Alex are Jack, Blunt and Jones, and even then, we know very little about them - and in Jack's case, she was delegated to the background for most of the books as well.
Maybe as a result of that, the fandom has defaulted to one major pairing (Alex/Yassen) and some minor ones as covered in the previous post. When even the fifth most popular pairing has only 14 fics out of almost 1100 in total on AO3, it's reasonably safe to say that rare pairs are a way of life in this fandom. To shine some light on some lesser-known pairings, we asked what other, mostly unknown pairings people enjoyed and would like to see more of, and here are some of the responses:
Tumblr media
[James and Alex slouching and being teenagers together]
Alex/James (submitted by hellacious/TheInverseUniverse)
Alex/James is just such a pure, fun ship. They can be teenagers together and cause trouble together and goof around like they did at Point Blanc. (This is very much TV verse James). James is also someone Alex’s age who he doesn’t have to hide part of himself from. He already knows that Alex is a spy and Alex can be open and honest with him, unlike most kids his age. They also can bond over some good old fashioned shared trauma from Point Blanc and evil clones. And James is just such a lovable goofball who can be the sunshine to Alex’s more serious disposition, and bring out the side of him that blasts music and fills a kitchen with bubbles.
Tulip Jones/Julia Rothman (submitted by Valaks)
Two powerful women on opposite sides trapped in a man’s world have quite a bit to bond about it seems. Clandestine meetings, scorned attempts at wooing, and Rothman’s disdain for Tulip Jones’ rather....conservative style clash in all the best ways. Couple with a scathing view of everyone’s favorite (and least favorite) male characters there’s only fun to be had in this pairing.
Tumblr media
[Yassen and Ian in dark and moody lighting]
Ian/Yassen (submitted by autisticharrow who writes Ian/Yassen on AO3)
The appeal of this pairing is in the untapped potential. We all know how their relationship went down in the series, but what if they had more time together?  What could they be if they bonded over their shared interest (Alex) instead of fighting? This is also a fantastic pairing if you enjoy parental!Yassen, since Ian/Yassen allows Yassen to become something of a second parent to Alex.
Crawley/Alex (submitted by Valaks)
One of MI6s best agents who SCORPIA tried to recruit  and then tried to kill when they realized they couldn’t turn him...and Alex Rider. This pairing seems like it shouldn’t work on its face but the deeper you dive into Crawley’s past the closer it mirrors Alex’s own career with MI6. That Crawley, Chief of Staff of MI6, the man who “no knife goes into a back without him having signed off”, already shows so much interest in him makes a compelling foundation to what could be at first a mentorship that blooms into something far more as Alex ages and gets his feet underneath him under Crawley’s guiding hand. Sprinkle in some good BDSM to keep him calm and presto, a rare pair.
Nile/Yassen (submitted by Valaks)
Enemies to lovers, a potential mentorship that blossoms into something more, a fling between two hyper competent assassins with something to prove - this ship takes many different courses and brings with it the intrigue and political drama of being SCORPIAs elites. Nile and Yassen have both been the youngest SCORPIA has ever trained, risen to be her best operatives and both have a backstory of failure that Rothman loves to twist to get the best results and most interesting reactions (even if it is a knife in the back to the other). All highlighted by the added contrast of hot and cold - Nile’s hot temper and bright personality against Yassen’s brutal cold and calculation clash in all the right ways, especially when a deeper look shows the streaks of their past: Yasha’s warm sentimentality and the underlying chill of Nile’s determination to prove himself. The ship can be as simple or complex as you want but at the heart of it all are two men trying to survive against all odds.
Tumblr media
[Alex on the left and Julius on the right, both wearing the yellow Point Blanc jackets]
Alex/Julius
This is a fantastic complicated relationship with conflict, pseudo-selfcest and maybe even redemption. There’s lots to explore with Julius’s identity issues from having been raised to shape his personality around Alex’s, and not having the same face that he used to. Julius and Alex have a lot of shared trauma to bond over, as despite Julius’s villainy he’s still a child that was brainwashed and forced to be his Daddy’s soldier.
Alex Rider/Artemis Fowl (crossover pairing)
Part of the appeal of Alexmis is that, here you have these two individuals who’s personalities/stories meld really well together! A snarky spy and collected criminal mastermind working together to save the world, who wouldn’t love it? But it’s also deeper than that--they both have had really stressful, horrible experiences in their lives, and have been constantly forced to survive nightmarish events in order to save the world, often without much thanks. These events have left their mark, but the two could relate to each other, and hopefully grow to find a more peaceful life together. They’d look after each other, and both could learn a lot from the other--they just have the potential to get along wonderfully!
***
That’s it for this week! Do you have a favorite rare pair of your own? Share your love for them in the upcoming AR ship week!

*chanting* Danny Phantom, Danny Phantom, Danny---
Let me set the stage. The year is 2014, a friend of mine has successfully not just convinced me to watch this cartoon but also introduced me to the baffling concept that wait in this fandom, selfcest exists and is like vaguely popular? I was delighted!
So this story took off after 02x06 Identity Crisis, when Danny’s ghost and human side were split in canon. Phantom started to develop more of an on personality in Danny’s mind, a comforting presence, but they were now two souls trapped in one body. And, here’s where my memory fails me a bit on the “how?” but somehow, they would manage to split into two separate bodies, one full ghost, one full human.
The endgame was that they get married and adopt and raise Dani together, like on the very long run. And yes, long, because this was supposed to be a rewrite of the entire consequent show post 02x06.
And though I only ever got three pages written, the document has remained in my folder for those past six years, because I did make notes on the changes I had planned throughout the show and I guess that a part of me remained hopeful that hey, just maybe once I rewatch the show, I’ll get back into it and actually finish it.
(...man I really hope the vase metaphor makes sense. I had, still have, a very clear visual picture of what I meant with that xD”) But here, have a snippet:
--
It had started out how everything that ended in chaos, catastrophes and crisis in his life had always started. With one of his parents' inventions. Of course it did, it had to.
The Fenton Ghost Catcher.
The first time he became they. Splitting one person into two different, separate beings.
Sometimes Danny wondered if Sam and Tucker truly believed that going through the catcher again (and again because the second time had failed in the most confusing and weird way. Which was saying a lot considering the first time) would simply fix things again? Make them one again?
How could it? It had created two separate entities. Splitting his personality.
Phantom had explained it to Danny the first time he had asked what this meant, how this was possible. Right after the two of them had gone through the catcher to 'fix things', just to notice that Danny wasn't alone in his mind anymore. That he was hearing a voice, a voice he wasn't controlling, one that spoke to him. Another mind inside his head. Phantom's mind.
Now, Phantom had explained it with a metaphor. He had described them as a vase – which was weird for Danny, but he had gone with it and listened patiently anyway. A white vase. Danny Fenton was the vase and when he had gone into the ghost portal for the first time, one half of that white vase had been painted black. Creating Danny Phantom. Now that vase was facing society with its white side, everyone who walked past it saw a white vase. If someone came and just spun the vase around once, everyone who would walk past that vase would see a black vase. Just like when Danny would 'go ghost', turning human Danny into ghost Danny.
Going through the Fenton Ghost Catcher was like breaking the vase, a clear cut right in the middle. But it was more than just breaking the vase, it was like fixing each half with a flat part to close it, creating two working vases that coexisted. Going through the Ghost Catcher again didn't just put the vase back into its original form though, it just took the two fixed-up vases and glued the flat sides together. It looked like one, whole vase again and they couldn't stand beside one another anymore, but the water one poured into the white half wouldn't fill the black half. They were still two different vases, just now stuck together again.
And so were Danny and Phantom now. Two minds forced back into one head. And just like the vase, the half turned to the front was the half 'in charge'. When the black half of the vase was turned to the front, filled with water and holding the flowers, that was when Danny would go ghost from now on. Giving the reins over to Phantom, who took charge of their body.
Danny was a freaking vase.
It gave him a headache, really, so he decided to just nod and agree. They had been split and they couldn't be put back together to one, he got it that far. At first, that annoyed and scared him. Because there was that constant, nagging voice – Phantom had a lot to complain and it distracted Danny from the actual situation he was in, causing Mister Lancer, his parents and his friends to scold him for spacing out. What scared him however was the essential question.
Was he still himself? Had the split taken part of his personality away from him, given it to Phantom? Was he still the person he thought he was? But no one noticed a change in him. Where Tucker had claimed the human Danny to be 'fun Danny' before, now he and everyone else seemed to see Danny as just Danny. But that had only unsettled him even more.
If nothing of his personality was missing, then what exactly was Phantom?
“I'm not you. We're not split anymore. We're both separate people now, Danny. Why can't you wrap our head around that? I explained it often enough by now”, complained Phantom's voice annoyed.
Because it was strange and weird and confusing, really. Wouldn't that mean they weren't the ones who had come out of the Catcher after all? Because Danny wasn't so careless and uninterested in saving lives anymore, he was back to his overly worried and self-sacrificing self. And Phantom had finally stopped with his stupid alliterations, he still spoke a little high-and-mighty and seemed more intelligent than Danny though (if Danny was being honest, which he didn't like, because seriously, he wasn't even the cleverest person in his own mind anymore. How was that fair?).
“We evened out. Like the vases. I don't feel like you truly grasp the metaphor, do you? I've really tried putting it simple for you, Danny. We were fixed, like the two halves of the vase. Being glued together again changed our dynamic once more, just like breaking us apart had. We were two extremes – the heroic ghost and the carefree human. Now you're as much a complete person as I am, even though we have been split from the same. I am still the hero and protector of Amity, but it's not the only interest I have anymore. Just like you have concerns for other things aside from fun”, replied Phantom, sounding bored. “However, we adjusted differently. Not evening out to be exact copies of one another. Now we're two different people.”
Two different people, but stuck in one mind.
“You're not happy with that, I gathered as much”, sighed Phantom.
“It's not that”, muttered Danny beneath his breath, knowing it wasn't necessary for him to talk out loud, but very much feeling like this was important enough to be properly discussed. “I... like having you around. But it's just... draining. And confusing. I think Jazz is that short of stuffing us into a straight-jacket, you know? I'm worried about that. And it's depressing that I'm the only one who can hear you when we talk, which did lead to the whole Jazz wanting us in a straight-jacket thing to begin with. And sometimes I just... want you there, like physically there, when I talk with Tuck and Sam, because you're like the only one who really understand me, you know? Like, they can be really stubborn and they don't get me, but I know you would and you would be able to explain stuff in a way they'd get it too, because you're just better at those things...”
In Danny's mind, he could picture Phantom grinning at that. If Phantom would be here now, he so would be rolling his eyes and grinning, Danny just knew it. And it irritated him that he couldn't see it. But the Ghost Catcher was broken, had been broken a couple days ago. And there was no other way either of them could think of to separate them.

okay well, some people requested that i post my anti-ship rant, so here it is. please read the tags first for content warnings before continuing. also i really don’t want to get into a big argument over this particular ship, i’ve already been through that sort of thing before years ago and i don’t want to go through it again. >_>’
so... talking about my ‘most hated ship of all time’™ is kinda hard for me, because it means bringing up one of my major squicks— selfcest/incest, which i’m afraid makes me look like an anti if i complain about it, doubly so since everyone has their own personal interpretations of what selfcest/incest is in the kh series, if it exists at all. like for example, is ro*kushi incest? i don’t think so, but some people do (and yet they often don’t consider ro*kunami that way... hmm suspicious :P). in other words without any common ground on whichever characters are actually related to each other or not (seeing as half of them are magical clones), the hypocrite finger could potentially be pointed at anyone, including myself. XT
anyway, it’s easier and more comfortable for me to complain about te*rraqua, because (ignoring the væ*nqua haters and weird ‘aqua is ven’s mom’ stuff) my dislike of it essentially boils down to, “it’s boring and overshadows my otp,” which is a relatively mild take. but with ve*nvan, and yes this is about ve*nvan, it’s more like, “it overshadows my otp AND the selfcest/incest aspect makes me physically nauseous,” which is a much more intense yet also subjective take that draws proshipper ire and potentially hurts people’s feelings. >_<
now as far as canonical sibling relationships go, i can point to vanitas repeatedly calling ven (and sora) his brother multiple times in canon, but then the ve*nvan shippers could also point to ven saying that they’re not, and technically they’d be right. ve*nvan isn’t incest or even selfcest anymore, not after re:mind. i’m still surprised that the shippers i talked to back then were actually upset by ven and vanitas not being related (in the sense of being the same person) anymore, since that’s actually a benefit to their ship and all. in fact, i’ve only ever seen one celebrating the “we’re not brothers” line. i guess the original connection between the characters in bbs is what they like about the ship, and why they’re upset that that relationship doesn’t exist anymore, even though for me that exact same connection is what i like about them being brothers.
idk, i guess before re:mind it was easier to point out why i didn’t like ve*nvan, but now if i ever say the reason is because incest ships squick me out, probably the mildest response i’d get would be “but it’s not really incest...” and that just ends up circling back to what vanitas said vs what ven said. like, if vanitas truly feels that his relationship with ven is a brotherly one, is him saying that they’re brothers good enough for me to be allowed to call them brothers, canonically? or do i have to accept ven’s rejection of that notion? because i’ve also encountered ve*nvan shippers who’ve personally gotten angry with me just from me casually calling them brothers without even mentioning disliking the ship. and if i say that adopted/step-sibling incest grosses me out too, regardless of blood relation... ultimately it doesn’t really matter, does it.
i mean, there’s already hundreds of ve*nvan fanfics and thousands of fanarts out there; complaining about it does nothing but paint a target on my back— same as it did years ago. it’s a helpless feeling, really, how inescapable that ship is, if i ever want to look up anything involving my favorite character. :( just imagine if væ*nqua was half as popular as te*rraqua or ve*nvan. there’d be so much content i wouldn’t even have a reason to be upset. ...i’m just now realizing that’s really what this all comes down to, isn’t it; a lack of content for ships i like, and an overabundance of content for ships i don’t.
*sigh* at least i’ve learned a lot about the whole ‘anti vs proshipper’ thing since then (including the term ‘proshipper’ itself, that’s how little i knew), and also what not to do when it comes to posting about ships i don’t like (ie don’t tag them like an idiot). like obviously i’m not gonna go after anyone for shipping ve*nvan, and if you like it that’s fine, but personally it’s just not my cup of tea at all, sorry. that said, will i ever write a va*naquaven smut fic? most likely, but there’s a reason why aqua’s name is in the middle. ;P
anyway, so yeah i guess that’s the end of my big dumb rant against my notp, which i probably wouldn’t hate nearly as much if my otp was even just a modicum more popular. there’s just no solution other than to make more va*nqua content... and that takes a lot of hard work. anyway, most of my opinions on other kh ships are basically just, “it’s fine,” “not interested,” or “why ship that when va*nqua is right there?” but otherwise my feelings on those ships aren’t particularly strong nor rant-worthy. mostly. o3o

ok so i'm new to tumblr. was the onceler really A Thing??? Were there legit just people out here going Yes I Want To Date Beanpole Bourgeoisie Boi and running with that??? i hear stories that the shipping was as bad or worse than the sans shippers and that's profoundly disturbing to me on every single level.
Anon, I’m struggling to think of the most succinct way to tell you about this. There is literally So Much to it, but basically the Once-ler was not only a thing, but the thing. You’d think that type of character would accrue a very small, niche fanbase, if at all, but that was absolutely not the case. Totally normal blogs would convert to Once-ler blogs en masse suddenly and without reason. He basically ruled 2012 Tumblr.
As with any wildly popular character, people really wanted to ship him with somebody. The issue here was that literally all of the human characters in his plotline were either side characters who appear for five seconds or his family members, so fans split him into two separate characters: the Once-ler (guitar hipster) and the Greed-ler (suit twink). They were then shipped together in one of the most infamous cases of selfcest in internet history, known as “oncest.” All of this was only exacerbated by the film’s weak writing. The Once-ler is never given a proper character arc and instead has a 180 flip into villainy toward the end of the film, which does indeed make him appear to be a completely different person. I am absolutely not condoning all of the weirdass shipping, but it is possible to trace the fan response back to structural issues in the film itself.
Eventually, people got bored of the whole Once-ler/Greed-ler thing and started making Once-ler OCs that were basically just AU versions of him. Much like the Sans fandom, there was an active community of askblogs, but in this case there were literally hundreds of them. I am not exaggerating here. I’ve seen multiple attempts to catalogue every single one, and I don’t think anyone has ever succeeded. The askblogs only piled on the notoriety because people had moved on to shipping their Once-ler OCs with each other, and that became a whole thing. Time went on, the fandom just kept producing content, and the most popular AUs developed full-on, self-contained plotlines. There were AUs of AUs. It never ended. The longevity of the fandom is probably one of the strangest aspects of it, but it definitely stemmed from the fact that there just was not a lot of content in the film, so fans had to produce it themselves. The Once-ler’s plot takes up about 35 minutes of an 80-minute runtime, aka 43%. That’s the length of like one episode of a TV show, if that.
As years passed and AUs progressed and piled up, a lot of Once-ler OCs had become so divergent from the source material that they were no longer recognizable as the Once-ler. There was a period of time where tons of them became normal OCs through a process that, I kid you not, was called “deoncelerization,” in which they were stripped of whatever remaining Once-ler-esque traits they still had.
The Once-ler fandom is often cited as the most cursed fandom to ever exist, but I actually don’t think it’s as weird as everyone thinks it was. Just about every aspect of it was directly caused by technical elements of the film, intentional or not. It’s honestly a fascinating look at what happens when a character is marketed a little too well and their resulting fandom is driven to desperation due to a lack of content.

It was different in those days. You saw Hannigrams, you saw Thorkis around. That was before the new SW series and before the culture changed. Now people aren’t supposed to even use ao3 anymore for some reason
I mean, I’ve been here since 2012 so I have definitely seen the change
— tbf Thorki rightfully got its share of shit and most people I knew wouldn’t interact with Thorkis (me included) but it is wild how like still being “that’s gross to me and I don’t want to see it” was the MAIN way we handled things instead of... how we do now.
Idk man I’m super social justice orientated, but I feel like a lot of people weaponize it in terms of things that aren’t all that harmful in reality so they can have a moral standing in their opinion rather than just
You know
Not liking something.
Like it’s okay to just not like things and not want to have to see it! You don’t have to have a moral high ground reason!
Like bruh I just don’t like the selfcest thing that gets popular again every few years! I could reason it with some hot buzzwords but yanno I don’t have to because not liking it is enough! I don’t have to be an asshole to those people who do it, I just blacklist the word and roll my eyes at whatever does come on my dash.
Also who the fuck knows about what’s going on with ao3. I get the feeling teens are mad because there’s erotica on there but that was kind of part of the whole reason FOR ao3 when fanfiction dot net cracked down and THATS a whole ‘nother rant of mine that’s kinda vaguely connected about teens on the internet feeling entitled to be allowed in every space of the internet and feeling as if the internet must cater itself to make itself safe for them

(kicks down door) i have the memory of a goldfish and while i'm 99% sure there was talk about him before in detail, tell me about the very popular boy who got like three arts the other day. the rushwell reports
KASDGFADSKJHFG YEAH THERES BEEN A WHOLE ASS ESSAY ON HIM ALREADY im gonna just link it to save time BUT
i could talk about him in a way thats less about the narrative because honestly? rushwell is a wild character in and out of canon. i really wanna ramble about this because only the people within my friend group are aware of this context that is the big reason he is such a relevant character
he’s like a VERY old character. and one i’ve always had close to my heart despite me saying shit about him like 99% of the time. but i say these things...... ‘cause i love him.......................... hes such a bitch
thats the main thing. hes a bitch. started out as the generic edgy asshole with funky little powers that we make when we’re young because we want to be in a superior position in the roleplay -- ok it wasnt because of roleplay actually i just wanted a character like that because they’re fun and nOW THAT THINK ABOUT IT I MAY HAVE BEEN IN MY CREEPYPASTA PHASE THEN? MAKES SENSE LMAO
so yeah the “yeah hes bad!!!!!!!!! >:)” eventually devolved into “...oh man hes such shithead” as i introduced more characters to the world he’s in. and eventually it changed to “JACKASS >:(” because cringe culture does things to ya. also because of the selfcest ship but we don’t talk about that
ok we do talk about that its like this one thing that drove me away from him because i looked back and i thought What the FUCK was i doing. BUT. this was deeply rooted into his character. he’s egocentric as fuck and no one wants to be with him. plus, daniel is an extremely charming character who is almost equally egocentric. and they’re both jackasses. things happen.
i eventually got rid of daniel in canon by killing him good fucking riddance and that was mostly it i didn’t want to look back and honestly i didn’t know what was the next step from that, like, how was he gonna handle that? how was I gonna handle that? it is a mystery
well ok its not. lemme tell you what happened
he broke into some random cult’s meeting and said “hey bitches i’m god” and made it all about him because he’s lonely and needs validation LMAO and SURPRISINGLY that’s when things started looking better for his character as a whole.
here’s some hot deets into that because i recently decided to screw hiding the deets i love reading this shit i gotta share it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so basically, being hated by everyone and really fucking lonely all of the time? fucked him up.
he’s still a bitch but more of a chaotic neutral one rather than evil
also,
Tumblr media
i finally found out how to write off past mistakes
but that’s a story for another day.

is there a ship that you used to ship, but don’t anymore?
what’s a ship you like that most people don’t?
what’s a ship you hate that most people like?
(For any ygo ship i’m curious .-.)
@genlirema
ship asks [Accepting, thank you for the ask!]
is there a ship that you used to ship, but don’t anymore?
I’m answering these with Duel monsters’ serie, since I have yeat to watch the others c’:
Puzzleshipping - Yugi/Atem is the first thing that comes to my mind, tbh! When I first got into the ygo scene last year, I liked a lot the idea of this ship. Nowadays, I’m very indifferent towards it. I just prefer the picture of these two as very good friends c’: I feel like romance here, cheapens out their experiences/stories. I also found other ships that just, please me a lot more for them.
Mizushipping - Priest Seto/Kisara. Let me reiterate, I still haven’t read the manga and I’m well aware how different the memory world arcs can be. And I’m also aware how the poor author was pushed into a time crush, to hurry up and finish the series (thanks KonAmI). But may I ask, what the fuck is up with priest Seto’s creepy ass obsession with pooR KISARA?? NGL the few things I’ve seen with him from the manga, kinda of stained a ship that I’m mostly neutral about (in fact, I still enjoy some bits of these two). It hasn’t ruined the whole ship to me, but c’‘‘: Let’s look away from the manga.
what’s a ship you like that most people don’t?
Hi welcome to Vani’s rareship hellhoLES, you’ll never leave them c’:. I feel like they aren’t exactly disliked... Rather, they simply go unnoticed- pushed aside for the big and popular ones. Which is a shame because, I feel like there are some hidden gems there. So here are a handful that I got:
Headdresshipping - priest Seto/Mahad Mastershipping - Seto Kaiba/Ryuji Otogi Trustshipping - Ishizu Ishtar/Seto Kaiba. Although, I heard somewhere this is surprisingly very popular in Japan. Moneyshipping - Seto Kaiba selfcest ?shipping - Critias/priest Seto Historychannelshipping - Seto C Rosenkreuz/priest Seto (can u tell how I kickstartedthisoneplzsupPORT) Cubeshipping - Diva(or Aigami)/Seto Kaiba
what’s a ship you hate that most people like?
oH bOY HERE WE GO, unleash the salt c’:
Puppy/violetshipping - Jounouchi/Seto Kaiba. I really tried to be open-minded about this ship but... Man, it just ended up falling flat in my eyes TBH. I don’t see their chemistry... At all. I get it, they have a lot of similarities between them and also there are so many metas talking about how Jou is a great foil to Kaiba’s character. But IMO, it doesn’t contribute nor serves to add up to anything. I just feel like, there are so many better options for both of them. Corruptshipping - Thief king Bakura/priest Seto. Okay so firstly, I never cared about or even liked Bakura within DM. In season 0 he is fine, and IDK about the manga. So I was already going in skeptical about it, then I had some bad experiences with shippers which essentially killed this for me. Any and all versions of Bakura (Ryou, Yami and thief King) with Atem or Yugi. - So about these ones. It is a combination of my lack of interest on the Bakuras, on top of some content for these ships that pretty made it clear to me how they just wouldn’t be my cup of tea. I’m not here to virtue signal, judge or even tell people how they should or shouldn’t like their ships. But I’d rather avoid content that glorifies, fetishizes and romanticizes serious subjects such as kidnapping/rape/etc. I’m not saying that’s all these ships have going for them, and maybe I was just unlucky but that’s pretty much the only things I could find for them. So, yknow- kinda of killed those ships for me bruh.

"Reasons Why I Ship RemRom" Masterlist
(Companion to "Reasons Why I Shouldn’t Ship Remrom" Masterlist)
I keep getting asked why I ship Rem/Rom, or why anyone would ship Rem/Rom. So. Here’s a list of possible reasons (You can also find more information about why people ship fictional incest on Fanlore.org).
Some apply to me personally, some do not, but I will use the term “I/Me” in all of the following sentences (in no particular order, numbered for ease of reference):
1. Because Thomas likes the theory that all Sanders Sides ships are an expression of self-love. Thomas’s quotes from the live stream include him saying, "What are my thoughts on sides ships? Guys, I really don't care." "I think that, in the realm of fanfiction, you guys, like, you guys do what you're doing. I'm not here to squash or rain on anybody's parade." "I don't like to stifle people's creativity in that aspect. Fanfiction, you guys, do whatever creatively is in your heart."
2. Because it’s just conceptual. Joan said in a Tumblr post that they were brothers conceptually, NOT biologically, in the same way Patton is a dad or Logan is a teacher. It’s a concept or trope, like the phrase “brothers in arms”, so that Remus could allude to Thomas’s dreams and the biblical quotes.
3. Because they are NOT really brothers. It isn’t really incest. All the sides are equally fictional. They split from the same original idea, so technically that makes them clones, or selfcest. They might call themselves brothers, but it’s just a nickname, I don’t feel like they’re brothers. Thomas and Joan have said multiple times that the sides are not separate personalities - Character Thomas does not have DID - all of the sides are just aspects of a single personality, so any pairing of any of the sides is just elaborate masturbation or selfcest.
4. Because they ARE really brothers/twins. Yes, I think this is incest, and I ship it anyway. Twins are hot, and incest is kinky. There is a whole porn industry cashing in on the idea that siblings are hot, and twins are even hotter. Relationships are built on shared experiences, and brothers have that in spades!
5. Because it DOESN’T MATTER whether or not they are brothers. I don’t really care about whether it’s incest or not, I would still ship Remus and Roman either way. I like each of their characters, and I like exploring the dynamic of how they would match each other in a romantic relationship.
6. Because canon was made to be broken. Maybe they’re brothers in canon, but people write fanfic in all kinds of different AUs where the characters are all kinds of different creatures with all kinds of different relationships. Why can’t I write something where they aren’t related and they fall in love?
7. Because technically Remus and Roman are two halves of the same fusion. To borrow from “Steven Universe” for a second, Sapphire and Ruby form Garnet, and that’s totally acceptable. But what happens when you reverse it? What if Garnet was created first, and then they split into Sapphire and Ruby? Is it then Not Okay? Why? The basic premise is still exactly the same - Garnet is still a whole being/relationship/experience, and Sapphire and Ruby are what happens when you split Garnet up into separate halves. Why is combining a fusion okay, but splitting one is not? The fusion of Thomas was split to form Morality, Logic, Creativity, etc. We now know that Creativity was split again to form Roman and Remus. Therefore, shipping Roman and Remus is no more incestual than any other two sides.
8. Because Remus and Roman are literally ~soulmates~.  In Plato’s story of soulmates, the story goes that humans originally had four arms, four legs, and a single head made of two faces. Zeus split the humans in half, and each human would forever long for his/her other half; the other half of his/her soul. It’s fate that they are drawn to each other!
9. Because fuck you, that’s why. I don’t have to explain myself to you. Who do you think you are, the Purity Police? Fuck you.
10. Because of “Reasons” that I don’t feel comfortable sharing. I have my reasons, and I demand my privacy. I do not require anyone’s stamp of approval. My reasons are mine.
11. Because of petty spite. There have been so, so many anti-ship posts telling me not to ship them that now I ship them out of spite. I wasn’t even thinking about the pairing until the antis put it in my head. The more people tell me I can’t, the more I want to. I’m wacky like that.
12. Because RemRom is forbidden fruit. I’m attracted to things that are forbidden. If this is wrong, then I don’t wanna be right!
13. Because... I don’t know? I just kinda want to, and I don’t know why? Not everyone sits down and makes lists of justifications of why they ship what they ship. Why should I have to have a reason? Who decides what reasons are “valid enough”? I’m really a big ball of confusion as to the ‘why’, all I know is that I want to see the boys kiss. Isn’t that enough of a reason? I think, therefore I am?
14. Because the Prince and the Duke are both Royalty. Royalty and Incest go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly! Everybody knows royalty only marries other royalty, and all those generations of inbreeding makes it hard to find royalty that isn’t incest, am I rite?
15. Because Moxiety is an acceptable ship, but RemRom is “controversial”. Moxiety is as much incestual as RemRom. Patton/Virgil have a Father/Son vibe going for them. They’ve referred to each other in canon as “kiddo” and “popstar”, and multiple times Patton has called Virgil his “child”. But both platonic and romantic relationships are still combined under the same “Moxiety” tag, and it is accepted and welcomed in the fandom despite the incestual undertones.
16. Because it’s simple math. If Thomas Sanders is hot, then 2x Thomas Sanders is twice as hot, right?
17. Because of Rule 34 of the internet. If a thing exists, then porn of it is on the internet. Somebody’s gonna ship it, so it mineswell be me.
18. Because I have Intrusive Thoughts. I already have a little Remus in my head, and writing about the sick, twisted things he whispers to me is the only way I can tire him out so I can get some peace and rest.
19. Because I AM an Incest Survivor. I have been through a traumatic experience, and reading/writing about it in a fictional setting helps me process my trauma.
20. Because I am NOT an Incest Survivor. Science has proven that reading fiction can help boost your empathy by practicing your ability to see the world through other people’s eyes, whether it be the author's or a character's. I’ve never experienced incest, but I want to be better able to empathize with people who have. I also read Abusive/Unsympathetic!Character fanfic so I can recognize warning signs, and so I know how to act in order to not be abusive to others in Real Life.
21. Because Incest is bad/dirty/wrong/gross. I like dark topics, and I find it interesting to explore taboo subjects in fiction. Murder is wrong, child abuse is wrong, but fiction is still written about them. Topics that are “wrong” are still worthy topics to write about - nay, they are even MORESO worthy of being written about in fiction because they are so taboo and not talked about in real life!
22. Because Incest between Consenting Adults is NOT wrong. I don’t think it's “hot” or “kinky” or anything. I just think it's okay for two consenting adults who are related to be in a relationship if it's love.
23. Because Fiction does not equal Reality. Fiction is a safe space to explore topics that would be horrific in real life. Murder Mystery writers do not kill people in real life, and I don’t condone or commit incest in real life.
24. Because too much self-censorship is exhausting and can be damaging over time. It stifles creativity when I’m constantly scrutinizing and discarding every idea for being immoral and problematic. I already have these thoughts, and repressing them doesn't help.
25. Because censorship is a slippery, slippery slope. Where do we draw the lines, and who gets to decide? Where does it stop? If the characters become step-siblings because their parents got married, is it still incest? How long do two people have to live in close physical and emotional proximity before it crosses that line? Is it okay to ship clones, because they are exactly the same person, and it’s basically just masturbation? How long do clones have to live separate lives and have separate experiences before they become indistinguishable from twins, and it’s no longer okay to ship them? Is it homophobic to take a slash pairing and genderswap only one of the people? What if I headcanon one of the characters as trans, does that make turning a slash pairing into a het pairing okay now? Is it okay to make a canon straight character gay, but not okay to make a canon gay character straight? What if I headcanon a gay character as bi, then is it okay to put them in a “straight” relationship? Can I ship same-age teenagers, or is that pedophilia? Or is it okay to ship them, as long as it’s not explicit?
26. Because Remus would ship it. Look me in the eye and tell me there is a single kink or taboo Remus, Duke of Unicorn Porn, wouldn’t be 100% in support of. I dare you.
I think I got the most popular reasons? If any pro-shippers have reasons I’m missing and want added to the list, let me know.

Author Interview
tagged by @throesofangels who is my blessed beloved uwu
name: Bird; I go by The_Birds_And_Bees as my main writing account on Ao3 which is a triple entendre.
fandoms: I very much hyperfocus, so there’s a few side fandoms I still do pay attention to, but Undertale absolutely continues to own my ass. I’ve gotten into Celeste pretty recently, as well.
where you post: ao3 primarily, though I used to have multiple accounts on ffnet and I’ve posted a couple of things here on tumbles.
most popular oneshot: Five Times Papyrus Was Really Great (and the times he is still just as great, but needs a reminder)! I wrote this in one sitting which was about 14 hours for a friend who was really distressed at the time; it’s really heartwarming to see how many other people it’s managed to help, too.
most popular multi-chapter fic;  Ngl I don’t really write a lot of multichapter things anymore- the stuff that I would have called my most popular is now orphaned, but the one I was fondest of reached 530 kudos and about 300 comments? Something like that.
favorite story you’ve written: Of things I’ve actually published, it’s probably Drive It Like You Stole It. I adore this work, which is one of the reasons why I’ve ended up continuing it after hiatusing from writing for so long.
fic you were nervous to post: Self-Care. It’s a selfcest pairing and tbh I’m just overall awkward about posting anything shipwise these days- add how small the fandom is on Ao3 and it took a while for me to feel brave enough to shove it up. Thankfully, people have been really kind about it!
how you choose your titles: Song titles/lyrics, quotes, or puns. Sometimes a mix of all three. Sometimes the title comes before the actual concept of the story, just because I see a quote or hear something that resonates to me.
do you outline: Almost always? But generally, it’s mostly an outline of dot points, so for a oneshot it might be only 3-5 points of what I’m looking for. In-depth for me might mean running through the motivations of characters and how that will affect conflict in the story.... but usually I’m writing a oneshot and I’ll finish it in one to two sessions of writing, so I don’t necessarily need them past brainstorming.
complete: uuuuHHHHH
I mostly write oneshots because I finish them lfmskjb my track record with multichapters is pretty not great, but I can finish them? Sometimes??? Not as often as I’d like????
in progress: Stay Frosty (Royal Milk Tea), and And Then, There’s You are both works I’m in the progress of updating at least once each before the end of the year.
coming soon/not yet started: Next year I really really want to rewrite and continue LOVE is War; hopefully, I’ll also get back to The day you took the good away, problem there being I’ve lost the outline I had for it, so there’s a lot of work I’ll have to do in order to...figure out the timeline I had planned, lmfao.
Ironically, I’m also currently working on a Christmas fic for the lovely Angel who tagged me, which is going by the working title Resonance. uwu
do you accept prompts: Absolutely! I can’t really promise that a big fic will come out of it, but I’ve definitely taken prompts before and explored ideas solely due to people telling me they’d love to see it.
upcoming story you are most excited to write: Resonance is something I’m hopefully finishing tonight, so I’m excited for that! It’ll also be nice to look at writing a sequel for Self-Care in future, though I’ll probably be taking a lot more time for that one fff
tagging: I’ll tag @knifehecker because they are a beautiful writer and I love hearing about their writing <3 also @annie-mantic, and anyone who’d like to do this, please feel free!
