Gintama Flower Suite, part 12: Tsukuyo and iris
There is one type of iris, Iris pseudacora, which is well-known in Sweden under the name "svärdslilja". That literally means 'sword lily'. Having heard that name since I was a kid, it's given all irises an association with combat and badass fighting in my mind. (It's probably the most well-known type of iris in Sweden.) At first I wanted to give Tsukuyo that very flower…. but the problem is that it's yellow, and that doesn't suit her too well. So instead I chose Iris sanguinea, whose colour I think suits her better and which is native to Japan as well.
This is an example of when I didn't care about the official symbolism for the flower, just my own associations.

Iris
grow Iris, Purple is the color of royalty, so it's no wonder that these flowers stand for faith an represent courage, wisdom and admiration.
Amazing facts about flower iris
Purple is the color of royalty, so it's no wonder that these flowers stand for faith and hope. While the most popular color of the Iris flower is blue, they also come in white and yellow.
The Iris is named after the Greek Goddess, Iris who was thought to link the heavens with the earth and was often personified as a rainbow. These flowers were placed next to graves to help the deceased pass on to the next life before becoming the flower of France, and the Fleur-de-lis.
Irises grow naturally all over the world and are an excellent gift for someone you admire
Iris grows in sunny areas
Most iris species (bearded, Siberian, Japanese, etc.) perform best when grown in partial to full sun. However, the crested iris (Iris cristata) prefers partial shade. A native of the eastern United States, crested iris produces 4- to 6-inch-long leaves from woody, spindle-shaped rhizomes. Flowers are pale blue to violet with white or yellow crests on their falls. Plants bloom in mid-spring. It is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8. Because of its small size, crested iris should be grown in the front of perennial beds and borders. It can also be grown as a groundcover in partial shade.
July through mid August is the best time to plant, move or divide iris. Iris is one of the most popular perennials in the garden and easy to grow.
Irises will bloom best in full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. They can tolerate as little as half a day of sun, but it's not ideal. Without enough light, they won't bloom well. Bearded irises must not be shaded out by other plants; many do best in a special bed on their own.

DAY 12: SPICY - Common sense said that I should draw an actual spice plant for this prompt, but then I found this. There are several “spiced” iris varieties, but this one is “Spiced Tiger”, and it was love at first sight. I wish I could find one in the UK!
It also gave me a wonderful excuse to draw a little tiger character. I wanted to make them a little spicy too, and this ended up being one of my absolute favourites. I need someone to make me a tiger hoody and mask.

Holy crap am I tired I just spent 2 hours digging up the iris's at my step mom's and boy we only made a dent
We're making progress though but it's going to be a process for sure. I don't even know what we're going to do with all of em'
She said she didn't know if she could keep any because the weeds are just out of hand in there and me and her mother can only take so many
Look at these giant roots some of them have
The originals were planted over 10 years ago and they've been spreading ever since, here's one of the itty bitty ones we got
There are some even smaller than this one it's insane over here
Anyways wish me and my step mom luck this is going to be a multi weekend process
And thanks to the person in the gardening discord who sent me this link explaining what to do about em

i was at a restaurant last week, watching the political ads on the TV between sports games. one from the trump campaign ended with the slogan “kamala is for they/them. trump is for you”. it was vilely clever - and it made a clear statement about who was the enemy, the other, the unwelcome, in trump’s great america. i thought about how the right had gone all-in on transphobia this election season, and i hoped it was a gamble that would cost them.
this week has been a gut punch, and i’ve been feeling a lot of things - rage, fear, grief, and subspecies of those emotions. what i kept coming back to, though, as i digested these feelings, were the people i love. my queer friends. the trans kids in my community. the people who, already, are losing their rights to bodily autonomy, state-by-state. the way that i’ve had to start looking at our country as a fucked up patchwork of safe and not-safe. the way that access to medical care, increasingly, changes depending on which side of an arbitrary border you’re on. i’m also realizing the ignorance and privilege it is to only think of our country this way, now. america has always been about picking and choosing who deserves rights, who we consider a person. but, despite the deep-seated flaws of this country, i live in it. so do so many people i love. and that’s what I keep coming back to: the people i love, and my desire to protect them. at the very center of all the rage and hurt and anxiety and sorrow i’m feeling, is a deep, perilous love. i am holding onto that love. i hope you are, too.
