So in the midst of a really bad bout of insomnia, I decided to make some user pictures. “Let’s try just doing something simple for once!” - HAHAHA, I can never do simple. It took me forever. And I got carried away and did a bunch of them, because OF COURSE I DID.

So during a period of art block and insomnia, I started to experiment. I began doing these little abstract squares, then ask people what they could see in them. Then tried to weave those ideas into the square, while still allowing the textures to come through. (Kids are brilliant for this.) I ended up doing a wee series.

Abstract art is one of those things I love but I think it takes a lot of courage to actually do and put out there. But it’s tremendously therapeutic to actually do.

So… Happy New Year? Apologies for my absence, my winter has mainly consisted of flu and fatigue, and I just haven’t had the motivation or inspiration to do much. But I did want to share this - a sticker/seamless patterns based on my own pet puddle, Enzo. It’s called “Cats Are Liquid” and you can now buy it from my store. (Link in bio!)

I haven’t disappeared! But November is a super busy time for me and I haven’t had much time to pick up a pencil. But I decided I’d try to experiment with using more abstract shapes in my character designs, and came up with this.

I spent a lot of time working on it in a local cafe while dealing with real life stuff, and I had a lot of lovely people come up to talk to me about my art while I was there. Hi to all of you! I appreciate it so much. I’ll happily talk art with anyone, it makes me so happy.

SMASHTOBER DAY 31: LANDMARK/THE END IS NIGH/SPIDER

And here we are. We did it. I feel like maybe I should apologise to the city of New York for taking their statue into strange Lovecraftian places, but according to all the movies, they’re probably used to all kinds of strange things happening anyway.

Now I’m going for a lie down, and a nap. Until January.

If I’d been competent, I’d have done some post-apocalyptic overgrown civilisation thing, but as I am mostly incompetent, I looked at this set of prompts and my brain went MARIOKART. I am not sorry.

SMASHTOBER DAY 26: CAMERA/CULT/BACKPACK

So… I was working on this at 4am in the morning, while feverish, and my brain finally caught up and went… “what am I doing?”. I’ve been really ill lately and it’s got to the point where really, I need to accept that while I will get these done, I will not be getting them done *on time*, and I should make my peace with that. I’m not that far behind, I should do the remaining ones at my own pace, and then fall into hibernation for the rest of the winter. So I’ll post them as I do them ❤️

SMASHTOBER DAY 25: SCARECROW/HAUNTED AI/STONE

If you use Procreate and you *don’t* have any concept art brushes - particularly a wide flat rectangle brush - then I recommend them wholeheartedly. They are so much fun to use. This one is by Mike McCain, it’s called “Vert Fixed”, I think.

SMASHTOBER DAY 24: EXPEDITION/COCKPIT/RADISH

This one need some explaining. This is the Lid of Palenque, which covers the sarcophagus of K’inich Janaab’ Pakal. It was discovered in 1952 by Alberto Ruiz Lhuillier. It’s an incredible piece of art depicting Pakal falling into the underworld at the moment of death, but for years it was famous because of the theory that it depicted him sitting in the cockpit of a spaceship. When I saw the prompts… I had to. It gave me a blister from inking it, but it was worth it.

I confess, I love this one. It’s just so very, very silly. I’m not good at silhouette-type art, but I love that I get to try all these new things during inktober.
