The Theatre of the Oppressed: Using Performance to Challenge Injustice
The Theatre of the Oppressed is a revolutionary form of participatory theatre that began in the 1960s and 70s in Brazil. Created by visionary theatre practitioner Augusto Boal, it uses performance as a vehicle for promoting critical thinking and social and political change. At its core, the Theatre of the Oppressed aims to transform the passive audience into active “spect-actors” who can observe…

*starts screaming at the top of my lungs*
BUT I HAVE A PLAN
AND I WILL BE REMEMBERED
I WILL BE GREAT
JUST WAIT AND SEE
YOU’D BETTER WISE UP, ‘CAUSE I’LL RISE UP
BRING ON ANY CHALLENGE!
AND SOMEDAY SOON, I SWEAR —
I DON’T KNOW HOW OR WHEN —
BUT I PROMISE YOU, I’LL NEVER BE INVISIBLE AGAIN
SOMEONE WILL NOTICE
…Me 🎶

When we say make theatre more accessible, we don't just mean for physically disabled people but mentally disabled people as well.
Allowing actors to step aside and process a direction is just as important as putting in ramps.
I say this as someone who who was made to feel guilty for asking for time to process a big change because "if a director tells you to do it, you do it." But I couldn't do it. I was freezing up. I was unable to perform. I'm not being stubborn or disrespectful. I. Am. Disabled. And I need to be accommodated.

I touched very lightly the other day on my experiences in theatre and music as a person with chronic health issues and invisible disabilities, which I’m really glad to have shared that, and that I’m talking more about that side of myself as a performer? Today, I’d love to share some of the things that I do that help me get through performance days or particularly strenuous days when my health is struggling. Disclaimer, I’m not a doctor by any means! These are things that I find can be beneficial to me, but they might not work for everyone! But, hopefully some of these are helpful for others! I’d also love to hear what others do!
For my lungs, I make a mixture of like. Black seed oil, raw honey, and apple cider vinegar. It tastes super sour, and pretty sweet as well, and it’s definitely not for everyone, but, I take this twice daily, and it does have a lot of benefits. I also steam my lungs when I have time! I either will shower and do like, extremely hot water. Or, sometimes, if I don’t want to get my hair wet (usually because it’s a performance day lol) I have boiled hot water, and then taken a towel and like, will hold my head over the pan and the towel over my head. Sometimes there’s like, tablets that I add, that help clear out my lungs!
When I have extreme chest pain, my whole body will feel like it’s shaking. It’s pretty intense, when that happens, I immediately will lay down and apply light pressure to my chest. I use like a weighted blanket sometimes, or if I’m backstage, I even will have a weighted item that’s comfortable!
I have a lot of nerve damage in my neck and brain, so unfortunately when those issues arise, there’s not a ton I can do? I get what I call the dizzy feelings? It’s like vertigo, but like, so much worse? Usually, I just need to lie down and be in darkness. I am looking for solutions for this one, so if anyone is still reading lol, and knows solutions for like. Migraine or vertigo like symptoms, I’m listening!
My hydration levels are also really bad, like terrible. I drink plain water and never feel hydrated enough. This is going to sound insane maybe, some people look at me horrified when they see me doing this, but I add a light amount of salt to my water. If my stomach is feeling bleh as well, I make a ginger ale cranberry with some salt.
I also have the advantage that I have a lovely lovely partner, who takes very good care of me on show days. Especially when my health is not doing great. They very lovingly will bring me medication, or food, or anything I need. If I need sugar to get my energy back, they immediately are on it. Sneaking me lemon bars or candy backstage from concessions lol. Or even like a soda. Soda is my typical go-to as a sugar boost honestly. They also will do laundry or chores or errands for me when I cannot physically move or am sick again. I am so grateful to have someone that loves me in a way to take care of me.

My media this week (27 Oct-2 Nov 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney #3) (Claudia Gray, author; Billie Fulford-Brown, narrator) - A really enjoyable cozy mystery in this austenverse. I did genuinely want to keep reading to find out the solution. However, I'm finding the will they/won't they/miscommunication/misunderstanding BS about Juliet & Jonathan's relationship is really starting to grate, even though the reasons for all the non/miscommunications are marginally reasonable & in character. But I was still quite annoyed with it, and I think I might be over this series for it. By the end at least J&J had talked and are on the same page about their feelings - now the obstacles are external at least, which gives me a bit more patience with it? probably my annoyance will be faded by the time the next one is published & I'll be happy to pick it up again.
😍 A Year in the Life of Sarge's Person (BlueSimplicity) - 189K, incredible post-WS recovery fic - loved how Bucky-focused this was (steve doesn't even appear until like 2/3 of the way thru the fic), loved his found family and of course I loved Sarge. Instant forever fave, stayed up until 2am reading which at my age is no small thing.
🙂 Specks of Silver (vanderloo) - 82K, lightly magical Suits fic- liked the 'small magic' style of this world
🥰 King & Queen (RELIC #3) (Maz Maddox, author; Kirt Graves, narrator) - dino shifters AND drag queens!!!! dino shifters AS drag queens! so much fun!

I was told officially that I have POTS today!!! Such a weird thing to be happy about, but I’m genuinely so excited that I’m finally getting into the answers phase of my life health wise. More answers are still on the way, but that was a huge win for me. The more that I know about my health, the better I know what will help me prepare for performances and for my life in music and theatre. So knowing that and also my light sensitivities makes a huge difference
My goal will always be to remain a strong leader in my community and to stay as strong as I’m able without breaking myself. I still want to challenge and push myself and stretch my capabilities as much as I can. Even when I’m in pain, I want to show up and still have power in a different sense than physical strength when that part of me fails. I don’t want to limit my dreams or my capabilities, I just need to search for how I can make them happen!

The Invisible Man and Re-animated are two things that I think would make great stage musicals. I feel like I'm the only one who thinks that the INVISIBLE MAN would make a good musical but I think it would be like Jekyll and Hyde the musical and we need more musicals like that.

My media this week (9-15 Jun 2024)
Tumblr media
actually me this week. week full of office meetings. did not like.
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 Murder on the French Riviera (Miss Underhay Mystery #16) (Helena Dixon, author; Karen Cass, narrator) - Kitty & Matt do a bit of off the books espionage on the French Riviera. I find this series relaxing - it's entertaining, predictable, charming & superficial.
🥰 the warmth of your doorways (cicer) - 00Q, 384K (WIP) - fake marriage that starts as a QPP, fairly quickly becomes romantic, eventual even sexual as they both heal trauma & become domesticated; great slow burn journey to get there, never got bogged down, just took its time. Loved being in JB's POV as he slowly becomes domesticated, realizes he doesn't hate it, grapples with that, realizes he's actually in love with his husband, starts working thru & healing trauma. WIP (possibly abandoned) but honestly where it currently ends makes for a reasonably satisfactory stopping point. I liked that the author was very clear upfront that QPP aren't inferior in any way but that this is the story they wanted to tell about these characters.
