Are LED Lights Ready For Their Close-Up?

Like a lot of photographers, I’m starting to take on more video assignments, so I found myself in the market for an LED panel. But as a long-time still photographer who has often dreamt of using continuous light in my studio, I was interested to see if there was a panel that might be able to double for me as both a video light and stills, for some kinds of shoots. I researched for a few months and finally landed on the Rotolight Titan. This is essentially the Tesla of LED light panels. It’s well-built: every component of it is sturdy and considered, all the way down to the cables, switches and knobs. But beyond the tough build, the thing — finally — seems to understand the real needs of still photographers. And so, in a few important ways, marks a new day of possibilities for us.Key take-aways:

The most remarkable new feature of the Rotolight Titan is a flash mode which offers a burst of light that is one full stop past its already impressive maximum brightness setting (remember, every stop doubles the light). It seems near-impossible to get a straight answer of how LED lumens compare to strobe watts, so the reality of this was only really apparent to me when I used it. My test was entirely based on my needs on set, which rely on creative flexibility more than exact outputs anyway.To start, I first just recreated a typical kind of shot that I would do, with subject in open shade and a fairly bright daylight behind. I love this set-up and it’s almost the entirety of my preferred lighting set-up when shooting on location somewhere, because I love both editorial-style shooting as well as nice dramatic backlighting. More often than not, I’m facing the sun and looking to fill in with light from the front or side of my subject.I also happen to shoot a lot of movement, so the other thing I did was to set my camera to f/8 and 1/1000th of a second, forcing my light to accommodate my fastest/hardest shooting scenario, in terms of light and detail/focus. My only fungible setting would be ISO. I put the Titan at full power in flash mode and started with ISO 100. This was too dark, as I assumed it would be, so I increased the ISO until I got a decent exposure. At ISO 640, I was well within my D850’s dynamic range capabilities (I.e. I could use brightness in post to compensate for a slightly underexposed image with no loss of quality). At ISO 1000, there was no need to change anything.This is entirely usable for me. All my cameras are full-frame with great sensors and great high ISO capabilities. Here’s a close-crop of the detail at ISO 640, with f/8 and 1/1000th of a second, with no color grading:

This image is essentially on par with a look I’d get with a strobe — skin tone looks great and the detail is more than enough for any client. Sure, a strobe could do this at half power, where it takes all of the Rotolight’s power to achieve it, but that still makes this usable for a lot of situations. I wouldn’t be using this for group shots, or maybe even some full-body portraits, but I certainly would use it for headshots, editorial, product and more narrative-driven work. And that’s a big deal.You can double up LEDs for more light or pay big money for bigger panels, but I’m guessing that we’ll start to see these prices come down in the coming months. In all, this is usable light for a lot of needs.Real Time Creativity My big beef with LED lights in the past have been the quality of light. Even the very bright ones have issues with how the light spreads and the softness of the light itself. To make it work has always required a lot of modification — scrims, grids, soft boxes, etc — all of which severely decreases the brightness, which then reintroduces the issue of power, not to mention requires quite a bit of prep and equipment. The Rotolight has also worked on this, with built-in diffusion. With a turn of a knob, you can dial in diffusion, just as you do brightness or color. All with very little drop in light power. This is a game-changer.Here’s two shots taken exactly 5 seconds apart from each other, at full diffusion and at zero diffusion:

And so here is where things start to get exciting. It has to do with creative flow. Being able to affect the diffusion of light this quickly means more experimentation in the moment. In my shoots, there’s a lot of play. If we have an idea on set, I like to try it. So, the ability to change light quality on the fly keeps us from having to break and add modifiers in the midst of jamming.And because you see the effects in real time, you’re using your eyes and brain at the same time that you’re interacting with your subject. This is far different than going back to a computer or chimping the back of the camera and then making adjustments. When a model turns even 1 degree, you see the light move across their face. This is true sculpting of light — doing it with the model in real time. 📷 Same goes for color adjustments. LED lights have long been able to dial in warmth or coolness (CCT) to accommodate different light scenarios — essentially helping with white balance and kelvin temperatures. The Rotolight takes it another step by also providing the equivalent of colored gels, all inside the light itself. You can dial in specific colors, with an unlimited range of values, from hues to
