"content creator" is a corporate word.
we are artists.
#anti ai#fuck ai#artists on tumblr#please do not call me or any artist a content creator#i'm an artist. a fanartist. a designer. but not a content creator#ai clowns in my replies will be deleted and blocked without response so do not waste your breath#you are not an 'artist' for generating an image any more than you are a chef for ordering from a restaurant. someone Else did the work.#owen dennis just deleted all his blue sky stuff again and i hate that he does that because he makes such interesting comments#about the entertainment industry lmao i need to just. start screenshotting every smart thing he says#anyway thats why i decided to finally make this when its been sitting in drafts for a few months#owen dennis#edit - if you dont know who owen dennis is he's the creator of one of the best animated series of the last 20 years (Infinity Train)#he's very open about talking about art and the entertainment/animation industry on social media and in his newsletter and hes so cool 4 it

NVIDIA announced their 5000 series graphics card which are able to do something they’re calling Neural Faces. Neural Faces is a feature that uses Generative AI to create ‘photorealistic’ faces based off an initial 3D model.
Initial model on the left. ‘Upscaled’ model on the right.
To be clear, that’s supposed to be the same character. And Neural Faces has yassified the hell out of it - it’s smoothed out everything, changes the eyes, nose, lips into something distinctly more vaguely European.
I hate the term, but this is pretty problematic for a number of reasons.
Also NVIDIA have basically created the incel filter.

Choosing a generator that is the best generator for a home or business is crucial to maintaining essential operations when the power goes out. It is a wise investment that will keep you at ease. It is essential to consider several important factors while selecting a generator to ensure that power is reliably and efficiently supplied when necessary.

one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand
with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary
i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.
#i also generally agree with the genie in the bottle metaphor. like ai is here#ai HAS been here but now it is a llm gen ai and more accessible to the average user#we should respond to that rather than trying to. what. stop development of generative ai? forever?#im also not sure that the ai industry is particularly worse for the environment than other resource intense industries#like the paper industry makes up about 2% of the industrial sectors power consumption#which is about 40% of global totals (making it about 1% of world total energy consumption)#current ai energy consumption estimates itll be at .5% of total energy consumption by 2027#every data center in the world meaning also everything that the internet runs on accounts for about 2% of total energy consumption#again you can say ai is a unnecessary use of resources but you cannot say it is uniquely more destructive

June 26, 2024 - Bolivia's union confederation has announced an indefinite general strike against the coup, effective immediately. The Central Obrera Boliviana, which contains all workers and peasant unions is also mobilizing workers and social movements to descend on the capital, La Paz, to repel the coup. [source]
edit: Coup attempt seems to have been defeated already (via @komsomolka [link] / [news source])

been seeing a lot of posting on twitter/ig but not much here. if ur in the socal/LA area and ur free for an hour or two this weekend u should definitely come to the animation rally. build hype and show support for the upcoming negotions.. if the rally has a strong turnout, it will make union negotiations for a better animation contract with the big studios easier...! friends, family, fans r all welcome - open to all!
more info here, eventbrite rsvps are sold out but dont worry abt that, it was just capped to get a headcount u dont need an rsvp to attend
(and if u cant make it rbs are appreciated lol ❤️)
#a year ago during wga strikes there was a post going around here where ppl were like animation should have a union LOL#and like WE DO have a union lol. or at least a decent chunk of the industry does. and we're workin on gettin it for the rest#and u can support it!!! and it rly makes a difference!!!#labor#tag 839#animation#if u want better conditions for animation and also..better animation in general...THIS Is easily one of the clearest paths forward#the animation guild

I think 90% of my gripes with how modern anime looks comes down to flat color design/palettes.
Non-cohesive, washed-out color palettes can destroy lineart quality. I see this all the time when comparing an anime's lineart/layout to its colored/post-processed final product and it's heartbreaking. Compare this pre-color vs. final frame from Dungeon Meshi's OP.
So much sharpness and detail and weight gets washed out and flattened by 'meh' color design. I LOVE the flow and thickness and shadows in the fabrics on the left. The white against pastel really brings it out. Check out all the detail in their hair, the highlights in Rin's, the different hues to denote hair color, the blue tint in the clothes' shadows, and how all of that just gets... lost. It works, but it's not particularly good and does a disservice to the line-artist.
I'm using Dungeon Meshi as an example not because it's bad, I'm just especially disappointed because this is Studio Trigger we're talking about. The character animation is fantastic, but the color design is usually much more exciting. We're not seeing Trigger at their full potential, so I'm focusing on them.
Here's a very quick and messy color correct. Not meant to be taken seriously, just to provide comparison to see why colors can feel "washed out." Top is edit, bottom is original.
You can really see how desaturated and "white fluorescent lighting" the original color palettes are.
[Remember: the easiest way to make your colors more lively is to choose a warm or cool tint. From there, you can play around with bringing out complementary colors for a cohesive palette (I warmed Marcille's skintone and hair but made sure to bring out her deep blue clothes). Avoid using too many blend mode layers; hand-picking colors will really help you build your innate color sense and find a color style. Try using saturated colors in unexpected places! If you're coloring a night scene, try using deep blues or greens or magentas. You see these deep colors used all the time in older anime because they couldn't rely on a lightness scale to make colors darker, they had to use darker paints with specific hues. Don't overthink it, simpler is better!]
#not art#dungeon meshi#rant#i'm someone who can get obsessive over colors in my own art#will stare at the screen adjusting hues/saturation for hours#luckily i've gotten faster at color picking#but yeah modern anime's color design is saddening to me. the general trend leans towards white/grey desaturated palettes#simply because they're easier to pick digitally#this is not the colorists fault mind you. the anime industry's problems are also labor problems. artists are severely underpaid#and overworked. colorists literally aren't paid enough to do their best#there isn't a “creative drought” in the anime industry. this trend is widespread across studios purely BECAUSE it's not up to individuals#until work conditions improve anime will unfortunately continue to miss its fullest potential visually#don't even GET ME STARTED ON THE USE OF POST-PROCESSING FILTERS AND LIGHTING IN ANIME THOUGH#SOMEONE HOLD ME BACK. I HATE LENS FLARES I HATE GRADIENT SHADING I HATE CHROMATIC ABBERATION AND BLUR

Really into electro-industrial music nowadays so I wanted to make a dead guy inspired by it
His design is still a WIP but it has to be a rugged post-apocalyptic DIY vibe

I dont know where you people are finding or trusting (!!) places like Chuang or Lausan but come on.
1. pieces using terminology like authoritarianism or totalitarianism should at least give you some skepticism, if not in taking them seriously, then at least in having some understanding of how those terms are positioned geopolitics, eg, western imperialist motives in smearing their enemies who have the most power and ability and organization in fighting back.
2. theyre very purposefully unclear in their exact positions or affiliations. say, their funding for operations - especially when it's not just one guy and clearly they're not asking for viewer/follower support. they may (supposedly) seek collaboration with indigenous and anti-imperialist groups and then turn around and either insinuate or openly call china imperialist. unserious. and then have the gall to say they support a revolutionary global leftism
#I'm not saying theyre backed by US feds or the western NGO-sphere but... look. anti-china angles have been getting funneled money#at this point in time I'm just kind of done with vague 'leftist' groups generally speaking.#if u put 'revolutionary' anywhere near your mouth. then get serious.#in contrast to these groups like chuangcn or lausanhk who have been relatively prolific in recent years#qiao collective really slowed down and didn't post anything in 2023 and I was so worried it would go dark like thechinawiki.com#which was (apparently) just run by One Person#sinophobia machine go brr#sinophobia#chen yells at clouds. more at 10#media matters#gonna keep my original tags on this. but I must add more:#after some digging & analysis I believe chuangcn to be part of the human rights industry-NGO ecosystem backed by US hegemony

something kind of gross to me is the way that some artists who post about how AI is going to take their jobs speak in a way that makes it seem like they think they are the first and only profession who has ever faced this kind of existential threat. they just seem fundamentally uninterested in relating the fear they're currently experiencing to the larger context of labor movements and the history of technological advancement/automation's effects on other fields.
they only ever discuss the problem with automating creative labor. there's this sort of implicit stance that when labor they view as not requiring The Divine Spark Of Creation Only A Human Can Possess gets automated that is just the natural course of technological advancement. But when it comes for their labor it's suddenly a completely new thing and a threat to the fabric of our Culture. The idea that creative work should be venerated above other forms of labor and is uniquely deserving of protections is just kinda shitty and stupid.
#acting like ai generated images have cooties will not save creative jobs#pretending you can Un-Invent generative ai if you get mad enough on twitter will not save creative jobs#you know what has a decent chance of saving creative jobs. a push for unionization in those industries.

Why do librarians hate James Patterson?
OH I ACTUALLY KNOW THIS or at least I know from what my friends with library/bookselling experience have said, what I've heard is that it's because he writes (or has his name slapped on books written by ghost writers whatever the case may be) So Many God Damn Books that shelving them all is a nightmare
I personally hate him because I read 80% of the Maximum Ride series as a preteen and boy do those books go down the toilet-
#hes also claimed that white men have it hard in the publishing industry. sure bud.#idk if that one in particular is related but he just seems like a general Annoyance
