one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand
with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary
Tumblr media
i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Andromeda Galaxy - pt.1 Aya
Okay, hear me out. I know nobody wanted this, but here it is: a fairly short story about m!Ryder/Evfra that consists of 4 parts and most likely will not have any continuation.
Beware though, this is the first piece of fiction I’ve ever written in English. I did my best to make it sound less awkward, but I’m still not sure about the results. But it will get better, I promise.
Genres: comedy, romance (vaguely), friendship maybe, nothing serious, really.
Pairing: m!Ryder/Evfra (be careful, it’s slash if you didn’t realize it yet).
Rating: PG
Size: around 5 pages
Pt.1 - Pt.2 - Pt.3 - Pt.4 ----- All chapters in PDF
Tumblr media
Ryder entered the Resistance HQ accompanied by light clanking of his gear. Weeks of travelling non-stop and picking up challenging fights made him sturdier and more skilled, meaning he would usually carry more than just a sniper rifle and an asari sword. Less sneaky, yes, but who cared if he was able to survive in the wilds of unknown planets however long it was necessary.
“Evfra,” muttered he in an indifferent voice. Obviously, the office of the Resistance leader was always his one and only destination point on Aya.
“Ryder,” forwarded Evfra as inhospitably as he always did, seemingly not paying any attention to his guest. Ryder knew that he did it on purpose every time and tried to do his best to disregard this act of covert hostility.
“Why are you here?” asked the angara, realizing there was no way Ryder would leave after simple greeting.
“I had some business on Aya, so I decided to come by and say hi.”
Evfra’s face showed a clearly annoyed and dissatisfied expression similar to when humans roll their eyes. He sucked his teeth, becoming more and more aggressive with every second he and Ryder proceeded to be in the same room.
“There’s no need to be so unkindly, you know I never come without a cause,” said Ryder apologetically and awkwardly laughed.
“Actually, you always do,” said Evfra disapprovingly. “Intercoms exist for a reason, and that reason is communicating with other individuals remotely. I’d rather you didn’t come here every time you want to chit-chat.”
“Believe me, I have a whole crew available for that. Moreover, none of them is so incredibly unwilling to speak to me, which is a great plus. And also, they’re all on my ship at any time so I don’t have to fly anywhere. Oh, and—”
“Get to the point, Ryder,” rudely interrupted Evfra. “I don’t have all day to suffer through your chattery,” he added and started scrolling reports more furiously than Ryder had ever seen him do, appearing as if he was enormously busy. Most likely pretending.
“Right, so… About that favor you asked me for… You know, on Voeld,” mumbled Ryder, looking at his feet. “So… I did everything I could there. People saved, data found, a-and…”
“Mhm.”
Ryder stood awkwardly, not knowing what to say or do. He expected at least some kind of reaction to his words, but if his help really meant so little to this man, he struggled to think of what could really support the Resistance and its cause and, more importantly, give humans some advantages in negotiations with angara.
Realizing Ryder didn’t have much else to say on that topic, Evfra struggled to make an effort to continue their conversation.
“I’ve seen the reports. The scouts you rescued can become significant assets in the war with kett. The information they possess can turn out to be useful for all of us in the long run.”
“You’re welcome.” A self-satisfied smirk appeared on Ryder’s thin lips as he felt that at least something he had done was appreciated.
Evfra casted a long unemotional glance at Ryder, unintentionally forcing him to hide his barely visible smile in confusion.
After a few seconds of odd staring, Evfra finally broke the oppressive silence.
“Is there anything else worth discussing? As I said, I still have other matters that need sorting out.”
“Not really, but…”
Ryder was shuffling around, trying to think of a decent ground for staying and continuing the talk for at least a little longer when he noticed a fresh cut wound on Evfra’s arm.
“What’s that on your arm? What happened?” he asked, sincerely worried.
Evfra immediately pulled back his wounded arm when Ryder tried to grab it and took a step back.
“None of your business, human. Since we are done talking, I recon you should leave.”
Ryder, having by this time developed a habit of not obeying Evfra’s orders, was surely ready to start protesting, when SAM’s monotonous voice echoed in his head.
“Pathfinder, it is highly unadvisable for you to dispute with the Resistance leader. He is infamous for his wild temper and unpredictability.”
“Everything’s fine, SAM,” murmured Ryder, “just let me handle it.”
“That… thing in your head. What is it saying?”
Evfra looked interested and a little repelled at the same time. That wasn’t the first time the Pathfinder faced such a reaction to the fact that an AI had a free access to his body and thoughts. The majority of the people he met were more than sure that nothing good could come out of it.
“That your wound should be treated as soon as possible or else...” he responded mysteriously.
“Or else what?”
“Consequences.”
The leader of the Resistance frowned, but managed to calm himself down and just let out a loud sigh instead of giving way to his emotions and becoming rude again. He now looked composed, although the undertone of hostility was still in the air.
Ryder stood still only for a moment, and then, using Evfra’s unpreparedness, dashed towards him in a desperate attempt to get closer and check the wound himself. Being a trained and experienced soldier, Evfra reacted a little quicker than Ryder anticipated and managed to evade the intrusion into his personal space, causing Ryder to lose his balance for a split second.
The understanding of where the potential scuffle was going came immediately, so Ryder didn’t try to counterattack and instead darted into the direction opposite to Evfra’s. Angara’s puzzlement by Pathfinder’s behaviour, however, didn’t influence his combat abilities and tactical thinking in any way. He decided to attack before his opponent would try to take him by surprise once again. He clenched his fist and made an abrupt movement with his uninjured hand, targeting the belly of the human.
Ryder was thrown away for almost a meter just to dramatically land on the floor, generating a cacophony of noises produced by the whole array of his gear hitting a hard surface.
“Pathfinder, you could have dodged that punch without much effort. Your intentions remain unclear to me,” rang SAM’s voice in Ryder’s head.
Ryder ignored him completely and continued to lie on the floor with little to no motion. His stomach almost didn’t hurt because he had actually been prepared to take that blow.
Having not many other options, Evfra called out Ryder’s name to check if he was alright. He consciously chose not to punch with all his force, meaning it obviously couldn’t be fatal or even do much damage to a person wearing full set of armor.
Receiving no response, Evfra called out again.
Silence.
The Resistance leader, thinking about how many problems the human Pathfinder really brought with him, moved closer to inspect the injured. Harming him could possibly ruin the alliance between their species so it was preferable that the Pathfinder left safe and sound. Even if Evfra genuinely wanted him to suffer a little bit for how irritating and importunate he was.
He moved closer and knelt before the seemingly unconscious Pathfinder. He heard him breathe slowly and steadily which, from Evfra’s knowledge of human physiology, meant that he was most likely okay.
The moment Evfra started leaning to take a closer look at the fallen opponent, he noticed a slight movement of Pathfinder’s hand. This time his instincts didn’t serve him so well, and Ryder suddenly hit him hard in the forehead with his own head.
Evfra’s vision flickered and, disoriented, he brought his hand up to his head to cover the damaged area.
Using the advantage he now had over his opponent, Ryder made a few maneuvers with something that he took out of a tactical compartment on his leg piece. Before Evfra realized that he did something to his wounded arm, Ryder had already rolled away, out of his reach.
“I’m done! I’m done!” yelled the human Pathfinder, raising his hands up in the air as if surrendering. He knew perfectly well that in a real fight with the Resistance leader he had almost no chances, so tried to pull out of it as soon as possible.
Evfra stood up abruptly, still touching his aching head. He was somewhat dizzy, but the wish to make the intolerable creature pay gave him strength and determination to act at once.
Seeing that his words had little influence on Evfra’s perception of reality, Ryder pleaded once again.
“It was medi-gel! Just medi-gel, I swear!”
Confused, Evfra looked at his injured arm. The cut was indeed covered with medi-gel that was slowly absorbing into his skin.
“Just wanted to treat it, that’s all,” muttered Ryder, finally rising from the floor. “A simple thank you would be enough.”
Lost for words, Evfra groaned and rubbed his temples.
“I better leave. Hope the next time we meet you’ll be in a better humor.”
The Pathfinder turned around and headed for the door. Only moments before his exiting Evfra addressed him one last time.
“Ryder!”
“What is it?” The Pathfinder stopped, intrigued.
“You have your whole species at your disposal… you have asari, turians, salarians, crogans… You have this whole galaxy with all the angara inhabiting it. Tell me, why, why do you have to infuriate only me all the time?”
“There’s one reason you’ll find out about later, just hold on for now,” answered the Pathfinder and grinned. “Oh,”—after making only one step, he stopped once more—“I also hate it when everybody always calls me Ryder. I have a name, you know. It is not very polite, especially since I do use your name in conversations.”
Evfra raised his head and took a deep long breath, feeling fed up with everything that happened during the last ten minutes.
“Ryder…” he started in a voice full of weariness.
“It’s James. For you it’s James.”

Lost in Time - ch 14
It'd been four days since their tussle with the spy; they hadn't heard or seen any hint of them, and so far the only injury that had turned up at Xu's clinic had been a woman who had fallen on a bit of wood.  Asher had gone into town long enough to get his broken tooth pulled (front right tooth on the top...he looked like a doofus when he smiled now) and had immediately returned to camp to hunker down and wait out the spy's next visit while the Civil Corps members had gone on a manhunt across the marsh and into the neighboring desert area.
So far, nothing.
They'd briefly discussed the suits again; Eli couldn't make up her mind on whether this Access suit thing was an original (less worrying) or if Duvos had figured out how to piece one together (really worrying).  Asher shared her worries -- the thought of Duvos mass producing those things for their soldiers, even if they weren't working like they did in Eli's time, would still pose a huge problem if the continent ever went to war again. ((Continued below cut))
He did know she'd given up on the trail cameras for now but she was still working on something out in the tent; it used a lot of the same pieces that she'd set aside for the cameras but also several new, different ones that she'd sent Petra and Selene after. The centerpiece of these new additions was a detached screen that she'd marked out dimensions on - she was either cutting it down to size and needed the middle-most section or she was dividing it into a rectangle and eight smaller squares that were all roughly the same size.  She hadn't done anything with the screen yet aside from measuring and marking out those squares but there were small piles of nigh identical looking chips, boards, and wires that were already assembled and sitting in a neat little line on the rubberized canvas under her cot that he assumed had to be put together first before the screens could be attached to them.
It had been a fascinating sight to watch her work with such tiny components; he hadn't had a chance yet to ask her what those things were (interrupting her while she was working on them seemed like a poor idea since it looked so...fragile, in a way) but he was looking forward to seeing the finished product, learning what the gadgets were for, and why she needed so many of them.  It also piqued his curiosity about Old World tech in general; so much of it seemed purposely designed to work with pretty much anything else.  Maybe Old World technology didn't so much depend on the parts as it did the programs to run it...which in turn made him wonder, assuming they ever got to a point where they knew how to read and create new programs, if all the old relics could be made to work again like they did back then rather than being pieced together with spotty knowledge and prayers.
Behind him Adam, Arlo, and Eli were all asleep inside the tent with the front flaps pulled closed to block out as much of the unusually plentiful sunlight as possible - there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was considerably warmer today than it had been lately; he appreciated the warmth and imagined his sleeping companions probably did as well but found himself going back and forth on whether he was truly grateful for the "sunny" part of this sunny day.  On the one hand, that suit made the spy near-invisible but not intangible so they should still cast a shadow so if the spy was dumb enough to try sneaking in close in broad daylight Asher was hopeful he would spot that before they got close enough to be a danger.  On the other hand he doubted they would actually be that stupid. The constant prickle at the back of his neck - the feeling of being watched - wasn't a sensation Asher enjoyed, and it also wasn't something he was used to experiencing for such a prolonged period of time; he had no proof though that he WAS being watched, and that was probably bothering him more than the prickling was.
The grumpy sigh he huffed out whistled a bit as it exited through the gap his missing tooth had left behind; that annoyed him to no end too. Asher didn't consider himself an overly vain person but damn it he'd liked how he looked; it had taken a couple years to be at peace with the sunken in scar across his nose but at least that made him look...adventurous.  Dashing.  Daring.  A missing tooth made him look like a drunkard, and it would be a long trip to Seesai to get a replacement that wouldn't prematurely discolor.  Adam was right in that he could easily get a tooth closer to home but, again, discoloration was a problem -- whatever that woman in Seesai did to keep the false teeth from coloring was a closely guarded secret...no one knew what she did or what recipe she used, not even her family if they were to be believed.
He supposed it was a question of if he wanted to look stupid with his tooth gap or look stupid with a yellowed tooth in a few years. Neither thought was especially attractive and brought with it a sort of helpless frustration that, coupled with the prickling feeling of having eyes on him, made him want to get up and move around to burn off the pent up energy and emotion.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of rustling grass; before he could truly react to the sound Eli came into view and he relaxed slightly.
"You're up - uh, early.  Or however you want to consider it."
She shrugged as she sat down on one of the rocks ringing the firepit.  "Eh, it happens.  Sometimes you just don't sleep."
"Any new ideas?"
For a time she didn't respond; silently Asher surveyed their surroundings - everything still seemed to be as it ought to be.  He still felt twitchy though...he was ready for action, or for anything that wasn't sitting here keeping watch.  Maybe with Eli awake he could exercise or something.
"Not really," Eli finally responded.  "I can think of twelve different ways to disable that suit but they all require tech that doesn't exist anymore.  And it's not something I could put together from stuff that's left here."
Asher nodded, then glanced back toward the tent; when she'd come out she'd left the tent flaps open and he could barely detect movement inside -- Arlo shouldn't be up for awhile yet but it was looking like Adam was waking up.  "So what's all that stuff you've been working on then?"
"Hi-Defs."
"I've no idea what those are."
"They're wrist-mounted computers.  A lot of their functionality isn't going to work right in this day and age but back in mine they were onboard guidance systems with maps of all the regions, could make and receive calls, they kept track of addresses and your appointments and bank accounts and whatever else you wanted to track, they could project 3D images, take pictures... They could do a lot of things depending on the model you had."
He blinked at her; only half of that had sunk in as he'd gotten a bit hung up on the concept of a wrist-mounted computer.  "Really? Why those then?  If they're not going to work right, I mean.  What will they even be able to do?"
"I want them mostly for communication and maps of this region. I'd need signal transmitters in some strategic areas but once I get it all tethered to the facility they should work.  It's going to take a lot of footwork to get maps updated since it'll have to be manual scanning rather than satellite surveillance...or, hmm.  Maybe some satellites survived."  She paused for a moment, then shook her head.  "Nah, shouldn't rely on that.  Arlo mentioned there's a space station segment out in the wastes but even if there's enough left there to scavenge I doubt I could get a link going with anything that might be left up there, and even if I managed it I still wouldn't have a way to issue orders or anything like that." There was another pause and a sigh, and a wistful glance toward the sky before she returned her attention to him.  "Mine will be the sort of central control for them all outside of whatever computer station I decide to run them off of. My aim is to give them to anyone involved with the security of this facility."
"Huh." Him with a high tech device...not something he'd considered before.  The idea was...kind of exciting, to be honest.  "So maps and talking to one another.  Is that all we can hope for?"
"Communication and map display is, bare minimum, what I'm aiming for, with maybe a basic calendar and clock function.  I'll have a look at what I can immediately do once I've server-flashed Pauline and get at least one transmitter up for testing."
"...and you've lost me.  What's a server-flash?"
She laughed quietly.  "-right.  It's hard to determine what terms survived the years and what didn't - with Petra and Merlin it's at least a 50% shot that I don't have to define something for them.  So!   Server-flashing.  I take the main operational files for an AI and do a sort of...quick copy of their foundation.  Pauline's an AI but not a living AI so I don't need to worry about her personality or anything, just the uh...the semi-intelligent framework she runs on."
"Yeah, going to need that taken down a few degrees still.  Pauline seems just as smart as Stewart but she doesn't have personality?"
"Nope.  She's just a regular assistant AI -- a sort of input-output response machine with just enough programmed intelligence to appear sentient but she can't learn or grow as a...uh...well, not as a "person" exactly but she  -- she won't ever change.  She just is what she is.   AIs like her you could make infinite copies of and they'll never, ever stop being identical copies unless something on the outside alters them.  Stewart on the other hand, if I were to make a copy of him, that copy would develop its own personality if given enough time to learn and live and the same would happen with a regular living AI."
That...sort of made sense.  At least, it was simple enough that he could grasp it without her needing to explain it more in-depth.  "And you're going to use her to run the Hi-Defs."
"After some minor reprogramming yes."
He nodded slowly; having a little, easily accessed map right on his wrist would be neat, even if it was just of Portia.  And if it worked well here maybe it could be expanded out into the other cities and nations too...and, oh man, would that make mapping the Peripheries way easier too if all they had to do was walk through it with the Hi-Def recording or whatever it did to create the maps -- suddenly he could think of all sorts of possibilities and perks to having one of the things.  "What would be the range on these things?  How would they figure out and store maps?"
"Range depends on what kind of signal strength I can get.  Hi-Defs have their own localized signals so they'll all be able to 'talk' to one another within a certain range, and also interface with the signals coming from the transmitters at a much wider range.  I'm pretty sure I'd only need sixteen or so at some key points to cover all of Portia and a bit of the outlying areas.  As for updating or creating maps it'll have to be manual scanning -- someone is going to have to start from an already mapped point and then let the Hi-Def scan the territory as you travel through it.  It'll take awhile but the program that runs a Hi-Def is robust enough to piece it all together without too much extra work needed.  And they have their own onboard storage to hold it all."
"Neat...and amazing."  As a more comfortable silence fell Asher tossed a few thick branches onto the fire and nudged them into place with a blackened, straight branch he'd purposely kept as a sort of log poker.  If Adam was stirring too then he should probably get the fire's heat evened out so he could start cooking. "Did you end up camping a lot as a ranger?"
"Yeah.  I went camping for fun too."
He carefully poked at the fire for a moment.  "...do you miss doing that?"
There was a long pause before she answered.  "I miss a lot of things."
Asher winced a bit.  "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked that."
She shook her head and flashed him a strained smile.  "Nah, don't be afraid to ask things.  The funny thing with pain is the more you experience it, the easier it is to tolerate."
"I don't think it works that way with this kind of...you know."
With a shrug she turned to pick up the cooking kit (which was in a large leather satchel that had seen better days) that was off to the side of the firepit.  "Works well enough for now.  I don't want you guys walking on eggshells around me, and I can't hide from it forever.   Hell, I can't hide from it even if I wanted to."
Asher was quiet as she handed the satchel over; he pulled the kettle out and stood to go fill it from the water barrel they'd installed just inside the tent flaps, then came back and sat it among the coals to start boiling.  A feeling of guilt had settled like a rock in his stomach -- that had been such a stupid thing to ask her.  "If you ever want to...talk, or something.  I'll listen."
The smile she gave him this time was less strained.  "I know.  It's appreciated."
As he bent to re-arrange a few half-burned logs she got up and walked out of his immediate line of sight; behind him somewhere he heard Adam's low voice and then the man's plodding footsteps as he came over and took Eli's place on the rock.  Asher just managed to catch the sight of Eli disappearing into the tent as he glanced back but she quickly came back into view a moment later.
"I'll be back in a bit - I need to grab a few things from town."  She had her pack slung over a shoulder but it hung limp and empty.  "Don't bother cooking for me."
"All right.  If you're sure," Asher replied.
"I am." With that she began to jog toward the path that, eventually, led back into Portia.
Asher watched her go and then sighed heavily, looking over to Adam.  "You ever feel like a massive idiot sometimes?"
"Sure," Adam grunted.  "Then I remember I'm not you and feel better."
Asher rolled his eyes and resisted the urge to whack the man with the fire poker stick; when he didn't rise to the man's banter Adam gave him a strange look.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing.  I think.  How do you want your eggs this time?"
------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Xu had acquired a wooden chair with a really comfortable cushion and a small wooden table for Harrison to work at; it sat in the corner near the front doors so it would be out of the way of everything else in the clinic but its position did mean that usually, when someone walked inside, Harrison was the first thing they saw.  Already several tourists looking for headache or muscle ache cures had approached him at the table to ask after the medications, even when Dr. Xu was clearly within view at his desk further in the room.
He kept telling himself to find humor in the situation but it was starting to get a little annoying - especially after someone actually moved a stack of books out of the way to "speak to him" with Xu staring on in surprised confusion.
It was enough to have him dreading the sound of the doors opening, and so today when they slid open he actually flinched and carefully peered over the top of the book he had propped up in front of him.
To his surprise it was that girl from days ago - the one who had fallen on the driftwood and gotten it through her arm.  She looked bright eyed and chipper, with no other obvious injuries, and he inwardly groaned as she looked around, spotted him, and came right over.
"Hey there!"
"Hello.  How's the arm healing up?"
She smiled and slipped her coat off, then pulled her sleeve up to show the bandage there.  "It's all fine and dandy - itchy, but doesn't seem infected or anything."
"Well, that's good." He went silent as she pulled her sleeve back down and got her coat back on, then cleared his throat awkwardly.   "So...what did you need then?"
"Ah, hello there -- how is the arm?"
Harrison sat up a bit straighter as Xu came over; the girl gave the doctor a smile.
"It's all good.  A bit itchy but seems to be healing."
Xu nodded.  "Excellent to hear.  Now, what brings you back to the clinic?"
The girl's smile faltered a bit and Harrison swore he saw a tinge of pink appear in her cheeks.  "Ah...well, uh, I came to um.  Talk to him, actually-"
She pointed shyly to Harrison, and he blinked at her in confusion.  Talk to him?  Why?
Xu seemed just as confused as he was.  "Oh?"
"Yeah...um, private matter."
"Huh?" Harrison blurted out.
She turned her attention back to him and rubbed at her injured arm awkwardly.  "Um.  If you have the time, anyway."
"S-sure, I guess."
He stood up and came out from behind the table; the girl took a few timid steps toward the door and when he followed along she headed outside into a much brighter day than Harrison had been expecting.
He raised a hand to shield his eyes and looked over to her.  "What did you need to talk to me about?  Did I do something wrong with your injury?"
She shook her head, hard; it was hard enough to dislodge a few wisps of hair from the messy bun on top of her head.  "No no nonono, nothing like that.  I was just um, wondering if you'd...like to go get coffee or lunch sometime?"
With that the woman stood there, lightly scraping the toe of her shoe into the mud; Harrison felt like someone had abruptly switched off all the lights inside his brain.  She wanted to go get coffee, with HIM?
"Uh..."
"It's ok if you don't want to," she went on in a rush.  "I don't mind.  You're probably busy.  I shouldn't have asked."
"N-no, no, it's-" Harrison interrupted.  "Ah - no one has ever asked that before.  I think my brain shut off." He offered her a weak, slightly sheepish smile, and to his surprise she returned it.   "But...why me?"
"I...dunno.  You're from Lucien, like me.  I don't meet a lot of Lucien natives when I travel around.  And, you're.  Um.  You know...cute, so I thought, why not?"
Now it felt like his ears were on fire.  "A-ah," was all he could say.
An awkward silence fell and it went on entirely too long for Harrison's liking; he was hoping she would say something...he wasn't sure WHAT, but he wanted to hear SOMETHING, anything, that would take the burden of this conversation off him until his brain caught up.
"So..."
"Ah, uh, yeah, um, sure," he said finally.  "I-I mean, if you're sure."
The girl's face brightened and she bounced on the balls of her feet for a moment.  "Hee!  Yay!  Ok, so when are you next free?"
"Later this evening?" he offered.
She nodded.  "All right then - later this evening.  Down at that restaurant in the square?  The knight one?"
Harrison nodded, feeling lightheaded; he completely missed what she said as she waved and then headed off down the hill.  Too late he returned the wave, and then leaned against the clinic doors behind him.
"What...just happened..." he muttered, rubbing at his forehead.
He, Harrison, had a date tonight.
...wait, did she ever even give her name?
"Oh boy..."
---------------------------------------------------
"Haven't seen you in a bit," Django said as Eli walked through the door.
With all the afterimages swimming around (it was REALLY bright outside today) Eli could barely see him, and somewhat stumbled her way toward the counter.  "Been helping the Pigs out at the facility."
"Ah, that'd be it."
She managed to find a stool and sat down.  "I had to come back for some supplies and I'd like to take some treats out to the them as a surprise."
Django nodded.  "I see, hmm.  I just pulled an apple pie out of the oven, and I've got some Black Forest cake made just this morning.  Won't take long to whip anything else up either," he said as he flipped open a menu to the dessert section and slid it over to her.
"Thanks."  She picked it up and held it in front of her; with the afterimages it'd probably be another minute or two before she could clearly read it.  "Do you know if they've established any favorites?"
"I know Arlo doesn't really like sweets in general.  I haven't talked to Asher or Adam enough to know about those two."
Eli frowned; good thing she'd asked.  "All right, no sweets for Arlo then.  I know he likes spicy things at least.  How about...an order of vanilla pudding, some of that apple pie, and that spicy spaghetti stuff?"
"Sounds good."
As Django headed off toward the kitchen Eli folded the menu properly and returned it to the pile, then leaned forward to brace her elbows on the counter and put her forehead in her hands.
Every idea she'd had so far to disable that suit all required things that weren't around anymore; the easiest would be a localized EMP to overload the projector circuits and force it into a reboot cycle where it wouldn't be able to disguise its user until it fully restarted itself.  A sliver shot would do similar in that it would disrupt the projectors by confusing its sensors with a quick burst of hard light mirror shards.  Or she could use a taser overload, or a bolt drainer, or a sys-dis (a system disabler - it would scramble all the circuit signals), or even a battery overcharger.  So many things she COULD do, if she was in her own time period...
But she wasn't, and simple ideas like trying to use water or some sort of paint or even dirt to try and short out or otherwise mark their target probably wouldn't work -- Access Suits had built in miniature shield generators evenly interspersed among the projector sensors that pulled double duty at repelling water as well as dirt, dust, or mud-like materials.  She couldn't safely rely on the hope that those generators were as damaged as the faulty projectors; if they were working correctly they might get two seconds, tops, of visual assistance if they were to try and douse the spy in something...two seconds could seem like forever in a fight but since there was no telling what else that spy might be armed with by now Eli was not about to risk anyone around her with so many unknown variables (it was as much for the spy's safety as well as their own that they be able to clearly see what they were doing the next time they clashed - she'd hated firing blindly at the spy and it'd be a really simple matter for someone to accidentally kill someone else).
"Something the matter?"
Eli jumped at the sound of Django's voice just over her shoulder.  "You walk really quietly when you want to."
Django chuckled as he moved back behind the counter; he had a few containers in hand that he neatly lined up on the counter in front of her.  "Old habits I guess, haha.  It'll be a few minutes on the spaghetti."
She slid her pack off her back and pulled a cloth bag out of one of the front pockets, then sat it on the counter; before she could say anything Django picked it up and began to slide the containers inside.
"It was an honest question though - something on your mind?"
Eli paused, then huffed out a sigh.  "Just trying to figure out how to hunt down a ghost, is all."
Django's eyebrows raised a bit.  "Wasn't aware we had a ghost problem outside of our haunted cave."
"Not a literal ghost," she replied, laughing quietly.  "More like someone pretending to be one."
"I see.  Not exactly your run of the mill problem to have."
With another sigh Eli rested her forehead on her hands again.  "I'm not exactly a run of the mill person."
Django nodded slowly, rubbing at his chin.  "...you know, how about we have a quick dart game while we wait on your spaghetti?"
There was something...odd, about his tone.  Eli eyed him but couldn't detect anything other than his usual smiling demeanor -- he sounded off but looked fine.
"...all right," she answered, standing up and aside as he shuffled out from behind the counter and led the way toward the back game room.
There were a few others in the restaurant; Eli found herself waving at folks as she went and narrowly dodging Toby who was waving a report card at her (she made a mental note that there were only two more months for Toby to prove he'd kept his grades up enough for training) and then she was in the game room with Django already retrieving the darts from a drawer in the prize counter.
He didn't say anything at first as he handed her the three green darts while he kept the red ones. "So.  Looking for a person pretending to be a ghost, you said?"  Django lined up a dart and then tossed it a breath later; it landed right on the border between a bullseye and the next ring out.
Eli huffed then laughed quietly.  "I feel like I'm about to lose.  Terribly."
Django tossed another one and it landed squarely inside the bullseye.  "I've had a lot of practice.  Where's this ghost person lurking?  Out at the facility?"
"...yeah," she answered after a pause.  "We have an uninvited visitor out there."
The third dart he threw, to Eli's surprise, flew well off to the left and embedded itself into the thick safety backboard that the dartboard was mounted on.  "When did this ghost show up?"
"Recently."
She watched silently as he went over and slowly took the darts down; when he was out of the way she took her first throw and it barely stayed within the board, embedding itself into a bottom right section that wasn't worth any points at all.
"Humor me.  Was it someone you think is on the smaller, lighter side?"
"I...guess.  Couldn't really get a good look at them, obviously."   Rather than taking her second throw she turned around to face him; he'd moved over to lean against the prize counter's front, arms crossed over his chest and a somewhat brooding look on his face -- seeing something other than his usual cheerful expression immediately made her forget all about the dart game. "All right, spill: what are you getting at?"
Django inhaled and exhaled slowly.  "Did Arlo tell you about that Rogue Knight we had, not too long ago?"
"Yeah, I've heard about it.  He said you were the one who was able to drive them off too.  You think this knight guy came back?"
He shook his head.  "No, I don't think your visitor is the same Rogue Knight I fought that day.  But you mentioning a ghost brought back some memories, from when I was younger.  Of a different, more dangerous knight, in her own way."
Eli walked over and dropped her remaining darts onto the counter.  "Are knights just a common thing now?"
"Not anymore.  In the older days - meaning, the older days of our current era, between the Calamity and when humanity was finally recovering - folks took up the title of knight as they fought to protect their homes and people from both man and monster alike.  Humanity didn't have much left back then...just a lot of old stories and memories of how things once were, but the legends that were even older than the Old World still managed to survive.  Such stories helped keep the survivors alive, and while it's a tradition that's been mostly overwritten by the Civil Corps and other law enforcement nowadays, there's still a fair few of us who stick to those old stories and the honor that comes with claiming the title of knight."
Eli watched him as he spoke; the brooding look had given away to something more resembling a thoughtfulness - a softer, more introspective look, and as he talked his chin was slowly dipping down so his gaze ended up on the floor just in front of his feet.
"So..." she said quietly into the pause that followed.  "Why did me mentioning a ghost make you think of another knight?"
Django finally lifted his gaze and flashed her a grim smile.  "I drove that Rogue Knight off with the belief that he wouldn't dare step foot here again.  I still believe that, in fact.  But I've been on my guard for any hints of other troublesome knights that might show up to try and finish the job he left undone.  It just so happens that I know of a woman who called herself the Ghost Knight -- I knew her when I was a younger man.  We even fought together a few times to clear out monster nests or drive off bandits."
Eli's eyes widened.  "You're kidding."
"I wish I were.  You mentioning you were looking for someone pretending to be a ghost brought her to mind."
"Who is she?  What's she look like?  Why would she be here?"
"I don't know.  I never learned her real name, and she never learned mine.  I never even saw her face - only the strange suit of armor she wore.  As for why she's here-"
"Is she a mercenary for hire?" Eli interrupted.  "What - how did - how do knights function?"  At his mildly surprised look she slumped her shoulders a bit.  "Sorry - didn't mean to interrupt you."
Django chuckled and pushed off from the counter, moving to line up to throw his darts again.  "Not a problem.  I can only guess at why she'd be here -- same reason the Rogue Knight was, I wager.  I wouldn't call her a mercenary...that's not what we did.  But, it's been over a decade since I last spoke with her, and people can change."
Eli shifted and leaned against the counter almost in the same spot he'd just vacated, putting him and the dartboard at her back as she stared a hole into the wood in front of her; if this person was this Ghost Knight that Django had known years ago then that meant it was a good chance that this spy's having an Access Suit was just...a one-off. One person who got their hands on something that actually still worked.  That was one fear off the list, at least.
"Django... How did this woman fight?  What did she do as the Ghost Knight?"
"Scouting," came his answer, quicker than she'd expected.  There was the sound of the dart thunking into the board before he continued.  "No one was better at it than her.  And in a battle she was the best flanking attacker you could hope to have on your side."
"Flanking...  Does that mean she didn't take people on in a direct manner?"
"She avoided that as much as possible but she was still capable of defending herself if she had to."  Another thunk of a dart.  "Can I ask you a favor?"
"Sure."
She turned around from the counter in time to see Django turning as well, flicking his wrist and sending the dart at the board without looking or aiming; the dart stuck into the bullseye.
"If you find this person, and manage to capture them, I would like to speak to her."
"I... I mean, I'M willing to let that happen, but I'm not a Civil Corps person.  That's not likely up to me."
Django nodded, slipping his hands into the pockets of his colorful coat.  "If you can make that happen, I'd be indebted to you...  Excuse me, I should go check the spaghetti.  It ought to be done by now."
"Yeah, sure thing.  I'll head back up to the counter."
He disappeared through a small door into the kitchen and, as she said, Eli walked out of the game room and back to the counter where the rest of her order was sitting packed neatly into the cloth sack.
She looked over a shoulder at the restaurant's patrons; there were considerably more people here now than had been when she'd first walked in, and Django had purposely wanted to talk to her about it away from others.  She really, really wanted to ask him more about how this Ghost Knight woman fought, or where she'd come from, or--
'I'll come back when it's not busy, or maybe I can catch him at home.'
That he'd admitted he'd been on the lookout for any other trouble-making knights worried her...maybe she should also split her history lesson time between Isaac and Django.
------------------------------------------------
"Bye, see you tomorrow!"
Django gave Sonia a small wave and a smile as she headed out the front door; there were a few spots left to sweep and then he could put out the lights and head home himself.
Normally he enjoyed the absolute silence of the restaurant late at night - it gave him time to daydream, or plan for the next day's operations.  Tonight though... He couldn't help but think of that Ghost Knight.  Everything he could recall about her had come flooding back in a rush when Eli had mentioned someone pretending to be a ghost; any other time he would have dismissed it as silly old memories but now...
He bent and swept up dirt into the dustpan, and then moved to carry it over to the waste bin.
Ever since he'd driven that rogue knight off he'd been constantly vigilant for any hint, no matter how small, that someone else had arrived to plunge Portia into chaos.  He imagined most people would think he was being paranoid without reason and so had kept such worries to himself...maybe he shouldn't have done that.  Portia's residents had been panicked at first and demanding more protections from the Civil Corps folks after the knight incident but, as time wore on, they'd fallen back into their lives without fear of outside threats; would anything be different now if Django had shared his worries with Gale?
"Too late for that," he muttered to himself.
He swept up the last little dust pile and dumped it into the bin, then went to put the dustpan and broom away.
Once everything but a single lamp was powered down he dipped behind the front counter; for the most part he stored napkins, silverware, and small dessert plates behind here but after that Rogue Knight had left he'd started stashing a small box out of sight behind the formal cloth napkins that were only used during holidays.
The box was about the length of his hand from fingertips to the heel of his palm, and was just barely shy of being perfectly square.  Django popped the latch open and lifted the lid to reveal a delicate-looking pair of gloves made of silvery wires, each with a single wire that was much longer than the others that ended in a tiny plug; they were very hard to see among the loose cloth that padded the inside of the box, and he knew from experience that even when worn they were difficult to spot.
As he looked the gloves over he had his usual mixed feelings about them; hidden beneath his shirt and jacket were a pair of matching armbands hugging his biceps that had very small charge generators on it -- wearing the gloves with the lead wire plugged in allowed him to charge up and release a controlled shock that went off with a bang, a bright flash of light, and repelled anything he hit along with delivering a strong sting to his target.
Much like the memories of the Ghost Knight now all his memories of having found these relics came rushing back; he'd once been a young, stupid man, with lofty ideals about what it meant to be a knight without truly understanding anything about knighthood.  He'd thought that finding these gloves had been the ultimate stroke of luck -- something to make him an unstoppable force of good in the world.  He'd been hilariously proven wrong, over and over, until he began to treat them as tools to compliment his own skill, rather than relying entirely on them.
When he finally understood what the gloves true purpose ought to be he began to win more often and eventually they had earned him the title of Storm Knight; when he'd realized that his dependence on them had basically shaped his reputation he had almost thrown them away. The fear that someone else would make the same mistakes he did (or worse - that someone would use them to harm others) had made him keep them, and steadily he relied on them less and less over the years until he'd mothballed them five years before he retired. The Rogue Knight had been threat enough that Django had felt the need to take the gloves out of storage and thankfully with them - and with his reputation - that had been enough to scare the knight off.
The problem with this Ghost Knight was Django knew reputation alone wouldn't drive her away.  She had fallen into the same pitfalls he had: thinking that Old World technology made her invincible, or at the very least better than everyone else.  Rather than learning and improving she had stagnated...and he'd watched it happen.
"You could have been one of the best..." he sighed, closing the box and tucking it under an arm.
She really could have been...maybe he should have fought her harder on her reliance on that suit.  Maybe she would have listened if he'd fully explained his own mistakes with the gloves.  Maybe he could have trained with her to show her there was a more honorable way of living. But then again, maybe there wasn't some magical combination of words that would have swayed her to his side and stopped her from getting mad and literally stabbing him in the back.
As he headed to the front door he reached his free hand around to rub at a spot on his lower back.  That old scar ached and itched when it was cold or wet outside but it was an old wound he'd learned to ignore; tonight it was a dull throbbing pain - probably exacerbated by the sweeping, or so he told himself before pausing to really examine that thought.
There used to be an old wives tale about how an injury caused by a mortal enemy would burn and ache when that enemy was nearby.  The Ghost Knight had been his companion once...he didn't think for a moment that they could be friends again but he could spare a bit of hope that the old tale was true and that he would know exactly when he was needed if it was truly her in the region.

It’s easy to decry cancel culture, but hard to turn it back. Thankfully, recent developments in my area of academic specialty—artificial intelligence (AI)—show that fighting cancel culture isn’t impossible. And as I explain below, the lessons that members of the AI community have learned in this regard can be generalized to other professional subcultures.
It’s a tale that illustrates a number of useful principles for those seeking to combat cancel culture. These include:
Find your friends. There’s nothing worse than facing a mob alone. Build your network in advance, so that you don’t have to cold-call free-speech advocates when a crisis already is upon you. Create relationships with people in your workplace and field who share your views. Find out whether there are unions or other groups that are responsible for protecting your rights, and find out what they can do to help if a mob ever comes after you. Join and support organizations such as Heterodox Academy, the National Association of Scholars, and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). Connect with like-minded people on social media. Your friends may come to your aid publicly or privately. Both are good. Even just receiving words of encouragement from like-minded individuals can make a big difference when you’re under attack.
Pick your battles. All workplaces and professional fields can present their share of dogmatists and unpleasant personalities. You can’t take on all of them, and not all battles are worth fighting. Pick the ones with high symbolic value—which is to say, battles that act as proxies for some larger principle—and which you think you have a reasonable chance of winning. In my case, I knew that taking on a notorious bully in the AI community was worth it because her rout would send a message to imitators. I also knew we had an advantage going in, because this individual already had hurt and angered many people. Moreover, her position as research director at a prominent company made her more vulnerable than me.
Know what to expect. The cancel crowd has its own bullet-point playbook. And they’ll respond aggressively to any symbolic act that threatens their status, or erodes the impression that they are the ones calling the shots. Remember that behind the social-justice veneer lies the brutal logic of power and ego. To maximize the pain you feel, they’ll tag activist groups on social media to inflate their numbers and reach. They’ll bombard every organization you’re part of with demands to censure, discipline, disown, fire, or expel you—often phrasing their appeals in the passive aggressive guise of “concern” and “disappointment.” At other times, they will insult, taunt, and, threaten you in a manner resembling middle-school children having a recess meltdown. In my case, the ringleader called me “a full on misogynist and racist,” “shameful bigot,” “hypocrite,” “clueless,” “tone-deaf,” “snowflake,” and “soulless troll.” She assailed my “privilege and patriarchy,” “lack of basic empathy and ethics,” and “zero self-awareness.” She also questioned whether I’m really a human, and called on NeurIPS to ban me, and for my department to expunge me. Her goal, in short, was to ruin my life. The cancelers will dig up anything they can from your past. And if they can’t find any, they’ll make it up. This will all seem terrifying, but much less so if you realize that you’re just the latest victim in what is basically a mechanical and dehumanizing process. Insofar as you don’t actually get fired from your job or suffer some other equivalent setback, these are all just words, and they don’t define who you are.
Don’t back down. Don’t apologize. Don’t make clarifications, and don’t try to appease the mob. All of these will only be taken as concessions, and embolden the mob to demand more. The real Achilles’s Heel of the cancel crowd is its short attention span. Once they bully someone into submission, they move on to the next victim. It’s a system designed for quick wins. If you don’t back down, they’ll raise the pitch as far as they can—but eventually they’ll be at a loss for what to do next, and all but the most fanatical will lose interest. The few that remain, now bereft of their backup, are just what you need to teach all of them a lesson, as we did in my case.
Mock them mercilessly. Fear is what keeps the silent majority from speaking up, and laughter is the best antidote. The cancelers take themselves extremely seriously, imagining themselves to be social-justice angels whose holy ends justify every imaginable means. Their sanctimonious spirit is a gift to you, if you call it out instead of playing along with its conceit.
Don’t let their narrative outrun yours. Once a false narrative is entrenched, it’s hard to overturn, no matter how many facts you have on your side. So while, as noted above, I generally would discourage you from focusing too much on defending your own actions, there should be some resource you can point to so that everyone can know the truth. Once you have established that resource—a blog post, a published article, a podcast, even a set of tweets or Facebook posts—point people to it where necessary, including your own professional contacts and potential allies. Keep it short, crisp, and compelling so that it gets widely circulated and isn’t thwarted by short attention spans. And keep the tone confident (and possibly even funny), so that it’s clear who the real inhuman fanatics are.
Goad them into overreaching. The cancelers’ overconfidence is your greatest asset, as I learned when the ringleader of the mob that came after me resorted to posting the above-referenced list of people whom she wanted canceled, many of them junior researchers whose only crime was to have followed me or liked one of my tweets. This crossed a line for a lot of observers, and of course the people on the list itself were aghast. Word spread of the shocking behavior. Even people on her side started turning against her.
Turn their weapons against them. You may find this to be the most controversial principle, but it’s also arguably the most crucial—as the cancelers won’t stop until they fear that they’ll endure the same consequences that they seek to impose on others. In my case, I watched as investors and customers leaned on the ringleader’s company to rein her in. Even companies that posture heavily in the area of social justice don’t actually want to be stained by the disgraceful behavior of mob leaders. Indeed, I have no doubt that it was an ultimatum from her employer that finally led the ringleader to stop her Twitter outbursts and apologize publicly to her victims, for all to see. Some will say that once we resort to this step, we become as bad as the cancelers. But that’s a false equivalence. The cancel crowd tries to ban people because of their views. We try to stop bullying—behavior that is reprehensible regardless of ideology.
Get the majority on your side. In the end, most cancelers can’t be dissuaded in the short run: They’ve invested too much in their roles as inquisitors to give them up easily. The goal isn’t to win them over—you won’t—but rather to persuade the much larger number of people in the middle. Just because these people aren’t vocal doesn’t mean they aren’t out there watching, reading, thinking.

Hmmm…
… I wonder if Yua was supposed to just have AIMS scrap Horobi and didn’t, for some reason… Interestingly, Over-Time translated Isamu’s line as ‘you were poking at him’ while Genm Corp translated it as ‘we [AIMS itself, presumably, rather than him] were fiddling around w/ it’… Presumably he’s referring to repairs, and it’s not a huge difference whether it was Yua or just generally AIMS that did so, but… Curious. I guess they were maybe trying to find out what made him go homicidal and hoped repairs would give them access or something, but maybe that failed.
All in all, I don’t think Yua was ‘supposed’ to just leave him w/ AIMS, in particular Isamu. I don’t think that Gai necessarily cared to specifically order her to see Horobi destroyed, but he may have intended for her to do that. Though I do hope him deliberately pausing to step on Horobi’s chest indicates a past w/ them, I think he considers Horobi  to have served his purpose and no longer cares what happens (which could come back to bite him, and I hope it will). This, I guess could be Yua’s way of trying to give Isamu some closure after everything that happened—which makes her being smacked w/ Gai’s reveal that he was the root cause of Daybreak all the more rough, bc she knows very well how that effected Isamu, and I think was hoping he’d find some sort of peace from it now…
Meanwhile, Isamu’s starting to question his outlook. Obviously, he’s not going to just flip a one eighty, but… He’s actually looking at the state Horobi is in and taking the time to think. I think he was building up MetsubouJinrai and esp Horobi as some sort of… I dunno, big, dramatic… Thing, in his mind, and now… For all, in a way, I think he recognises them more than even Aruto does, Ismau’s not quite the level of thinking of HumaGear as ‘people,’ which is why I think he was saying a ‘pile of scrap metal,’ but… He finally comes face to face w/ what he believes to have been the architect of his trauma, finally apparently overcomes it, and… It’s just not right. I feel like Isamu’s getting the sense that there’s something wrong here. Bc this ‘big enemy’ that he’s built up, this threat is… Now just a broken, shutdown robot. It’s not quite pity, but… But he’s shifting. I think he’s starting to wonder just how this happened.
I still think Isamu’s a better person to interact w/ Horobi bc, well, we all know how Horobi and Aruto piss each other off, but also… I dunno. I have a strong suspicion that, if anyone can understand Horobi’s mindset, it’s Isamu, the one who has also spent all those years consumed by hate and anger. And I also still think Isamu will be better able to accept/understand a certain aspect of singularity that I think Aruto doesn’t quite get, which is that it’s merely about AI evolving beyond human understanding, in the same way that the details of the human mind are. I think, as I’ve said before, that Isamu is better able to accept the concept of self-aware HumaGears still having the capacity to change and grow, that they have an equal capacity for good and bad, and that what their predominant mindset is upon awakening is about what drove them to wake up, but that it’s not the be all and end all. All Aruto did when learning about how Jin was only fighting bc it was all he knew, was how he was raised, was lament ‘why couldn’t you have been different’ and then destroyed him. Isamu, going by the ep 17 preview, is actually going to be confronting and debating and arguing w/ Horobi, which I think is a key difference. It’s not that Isamu likes HumaGear, he doesn’t, but… I think esp w/ Horobi, there’s a weird respect/recognition there. Isamu holds Horobi accountable for his actions, shouts and tries to argue w/ him, like he has w/ every other HumaGear, w/ only Raiden fighting back. I still think Aruto’s sympathies and definition of ‘good’ in HumaGear are still very rooted on whether they benefit humans, and he still doesn’t quite understand the potential he talks about. I think he could have talked Jin down if he’d questioned further, if he’d shown respect and recognition for the fact that Jin had become self aware, and still had the potential to change. Jin was already incredibly advanced at processing and acting and responding. Like I said in a previous salt post, imagine if Aruto had kept pressing, if he’d eventually discovered the cause of Jin’s grief, offered to help fix Horobi and find a way to work together. But he didn’t. He couldn’t seem to grasp that HumaGear don’t stop evolving and learning. If anything, he taught Jin that even if a human espouses wanting peace w/ HumaGear, they’ll still just destroy one that goes against their perceptions for any reason, that they still don’t see HumaGear as thinking equals. Aruto probably could have reasoned w/ Jin—maybe it would have taken a while, but he could have. But… It’s like, he talks about seeing them as people, but in the end didn’t treat Jin like one. Isamu, on the other hand, hates and fears HumaGear, but… He tries to fight w/ them, he tries to engage. When he has Horobi, who, as far as he knows, caused all his trauma, right in front of him, his first thought isn’t ‘if only you’d been different’ it’s ‘this is who you are right now and this is who I’m going to engage w/.’ He doesn’t think ‘we should reset/remake you and ‘correct your learning’ (ugh, that wording pisses me off),’ he thinks ‘I am going to fight and debate with you as who you are.’ He wants to argue, to hold Horobi accountable. I don’t think he’s thinking ‘I can change your views,’ but he’s giving more validity to Horobi’s mind and ability to think than Aruto gave to Jin’s. More respect.
It’s part of why I think it’d be stronger to have Isamu be the human who get through to Horobi. They’re foils. Isamu treats Horobi more like an equal, imo, than Aruto treated Jin. Like an equal he hates and wants revenge on, but more of an equal. He doesn’t expect HumaGear to be naturally kind and benevolent, and never has. He’s more ready to accept them having darker sides and thoughts and feelings etc. I can’t deny that I also get a smug little feeling about the possibility of such a feat kind of throwing in Aruto’s face that he didn’t need to destroy Jin, by proving that HumaGear aren’t bound to what they learn upon their first singularity. Maybe even something where Horobi can look at him and ask why Isamu, who was traumatised by HumaGear during Daybreak, who hated Horobi above all, can look at him [Horobi] and consider things, can actually recognise him and confront him and spare him long enough to actually talk to him—but Aruto, w/ all his speeches and love for HumaGear, concluded so quickly to just kill Jin, who he had just learned was a child raised into this conflict, all while going on about wanting HumaGear and humans to ‘smile’ together. Why did Aruto, the supposed sympathiser, conclude that Jin, a child just following someone else’s wishes, deserved to die while Isamu, who hates HumaGear, could conclude that Horobi, who was giving the orders and possibly the most willing villain, should have at least a chance to live?
It’s weird, and hard to explain, and this turned into salt w/out meaning to. I may post the top part again w/out all this stuff, so people who don’t want to deal w/ all this rambling don’t have to. It’s just… I feel like it’s an interesting comparison. Aruto loves and sympathises w/ and supports HumaGear, but can’t seem to accept that they might develop thoughts other than exclusive benevolence to humanity. Doesn’t… Quite understand that ‘self-awareness’ isn’t just some ‘final true nature’ if that makes sense, but something that means they’ve evolved beyond human understanding in the same way that the actual subtleties of the human nature are beyond understanding. Like… Like he can’t accept HumaGear who vary from his ‘ideal’ of what they are to the point that he can’t understand that, just like humans, self-aware HumaGear are still changing. Isamu, meanwhile, hates and fears HumaGear and is trigger happy up the wazoo, but… He… He ‘sees’ them better, if that makes sense? He doesn’t expect them to be unquestioningly benevolent towards humans all the time, bc he never thought they were. He treats them the same way he treats other humans he doesn’t like. I wouldn’t say he quite considers them people or anything (he is shifting in his views and it was partially Aruto who prompted that), but he gives more respect to their capacity as people for both good and bad than Aruto seems to. Aruto’s sympathy is rooted in how they benefit humans. Isamu never thought they were a benefit, but while he’s not sympathetic… He almost recognises them as people more than Aruto does.
None of this makes sense, I know. I’m sorry.

Breach Pt. III
Previous Parts: 1, 2
In Which Everyone Angsts and Moira Gets Roasted by a Semiconscious Teenager.
--
Aedan couldn’t sleep. He figured it was the empty stomach. His dinner was still in the fridge. He walked to the kitchen, opened the fridge door, saw the little tupperware of chicken and arugula, grabbed it, and then the intrusive thought slipped in.
We’ll have to find out everything we can before we dispose of her.
A wave of nausea hit him and he stuffed the tupperware back in the fridge and desperately filled a glass of water at the sink, drinking it down to try and settle his stomach. He remembered the sight of Widowmaker’s--No, Amélie’s wrists straining at the straps in the lab footage. He heard his mother’s voice.
We can keep her alive as long as we need.
Aedan coughed and spluttered at the image that slipped into his mind then. He set the glass down on the kitchen counter and braced his hands on the counter’s edge.
There are things you’re going to have to learn to live with.
Aedan shook his head and walked back to his room, running his fingers through his hair. He paused by the door of his mother’s bedroom and office, glancing in only briefly to see Moira perched in her chair with a large pair of headphones on, furrowing her brow at her monitor---no doubt reviewing all the lab footage from that day and trying to figure out a workaround. She didn’t even look up from her screen as he continued on to his own room. She’d be up well into the small hours of the morning, no doubt. Aedan entered his room and closed the door behind him. He laid on his bed and stared at the ceiling. He gave a glance over to Creggan’s hutch on the wall opposite his desk. The rabbit regarded him with a steady glassy red stare.
“...Don’t look at me like that,” he muttered to the rabbit before looking at the ceiling again. He remembered being in Rei’s grip, her short panicked breaths on the side of his face.
There’s no way this ends well. Your choice is how hard you’re willing to make it for yourself.
She’s a weapon we can’t afford to give them.
A weapon. She’s a weapon. She’s not a girl in a yellow dress smiling with the wind in her hair. She’s a monster who threatened to break your neck. She’s--
The train of thought was brought to a screeching halt by the memory of Rei sitting next to him on a bench in the Hassoun Gardens.
“My parents,” she was saying, “They’re always talking about how their families and the Omnic Crisis put them on a path that they were never sure they wanted. They always tell me they want me to be able to choose but it’s like… I know what they don’t want for me, but as far as what I want…”
He cut the memory short with dozens of nattering, bitter, desperate thoughs.
That was a lie. She lies. She’s a ninja. Ninjas lie. She’s a weapon. Weapons aren’t supposed to have choices. She’s a weapon and Talon needs to either find a way to use that weapon or destroy it.
But they’re not destroying it. They’re going to try and destroy her mind and if it doesn’t work they’re going to cut her open over and over and over again until--
Shut up shut up shut up shut up.
You know the facility. You could--
No. No. Not an option. Not happening.
You have access to the guards’ shift tables. You have the biofeed. You can see them coming. You could find an opening. No one would even have to know.
Not listening. Not listening.
Getting to her wouldn’t be the problem--Getting her out would. Uniforms. She’d need a uniform. Labtech and assassin. Faces are covered, it’s perfect. If you accessed the logistics terminal and wrote in a distress call from the Reykjavik offices then they’d scramble the dropships and---
This is crazy. You’re crazy. This isn’t happening and you aren’t thinking about this.
Aedan squeezed his eyes shut. He needed noise. He needed to drown the thoughts out until all this mess was over.
“Play playlist three,” he spoke to the apartment’s AI.
“Resuming playlist three,” the AI responded.
“Resuming--?” Aedan started and his room’s speakers started playing.
“---We can be HEROES! Just for one da-aaay! We can be HE--”
“Skip,” Aedan said, his stomach in knots. That was probably the worst possible song that could come on at that moment. No, actually it wasn’t. The actual worst possible song came next. There was saxophone. And piano. And bass and high-hat and “Everybody’s raaaaised in blindness”
Skip, his mind was screaming at him all through the first verse, Skip, skip skip say skip. Just say it. But no, it was too late. He remembered a hover tram across the artificial lake of Oasis and Rei’s head on his shoulder, sharing headphones with him as the chorus kicked in.
“Whooooo can I be noooooow you found me?”
Aedan’s eyes opened.
“...You’re going to do something very stupid, aren’t you?” he said to himself.
--
It was a damp, still morning, the soft thrumming of the orca’s engine’s and the sound of Gibraltar’s waves melding together to make white noise. Jack was too old for this, far too old for this, he felt it in his bones, yet the SEP serum was still keeping him together after all this time. Most of me, at least, he thought, giving a glance down his left leg, an orange prosthetic from the knee down. Jack stood on the entry ramp to the Orca, and Genji stood in front of him on the watchpoint tarmac.
“You need to understand, we don’t usually do missions like this,” said Jack, “This isn’t Blackwatch. This isn’t the old Overwatch. We don’t have the resources to take the fight to Talon. We’re only doing this because they have one of our own.”
“Maybe we should have taken the fight to them,” muttered Genji, “Maybe if we had they wouldn’t---”
“Genji,” Jack put a hand on his shoulder, “You’re emotionally compromised. And that’s fair. We don’t know if we can trust you to stick to the plan once we get there, but you can trust us to get her home---”
“I’m going,” said Genji, “It’s an infiltration mission. You need me.”
“Your prosthetics are still locking up after that EMP attack,” said Jack.
“So you’ll need a medic too,” said Mercy stepping up alongside Genji, fully outfitted in her valkyrie suit.
Jack rubbed his forehead, “Doc...” he started.
“They have our daughter, Jack,” Mercy said, furrowing her brow, “But by all means, try to stop us and see how well that goes.”
A long pause passed between the three of them before Jack sighed.
“I need both you to give me your word that you’ll stick to the plan and stay calm once we get there,” said Jack.
“And if the plan starts falling apart?” said Mercy.
“Well that’s what you have me for,” said Sombra, stepping up alongside Jack, “Now if everyone’s done bickering, we should probably get going, right?” she said, heading up the ramp.
Genji, Mercy, and Jack headed up into the Orca after her, and Genji glanced over to see D.Va texting away next to her MEKA, Lúcio next to her. Lúcio gave them a slight wave.
“Thank you,” Genji said to Sombra as the orca doors closed behind them.
“Hey, you’d do the same for Marti, right?” said Sombra with a slight smile.
“In a heartbeat,” said Genji. Sombra smiled and clapped him on the shoulder. His shoulder jerked slightly at the touch, the prosthetics still not 100% sure how to react to impacts after the EMP, but it was getting better.
“...we’re bringing D.Va and Lúcio on a covert mission?” said Genji.
“We need someone who can move in fast, take a lot of damage, and move out fast, and someone who can disrupt the enemy line,” said Jack, “Also the Meka can carry Rei if she’s... incapacitated.”
Mercy was biting the inside of her lip as she looked around the Orca. They took their seats as the Orca took off and headed towards Reykjavik. With Genji and Mercy on the team, it was a strike team of eight rather than six. Tracer was in the cockpit of the Orca, looking grim---Losing Rei on the very anniversary of Mondatta’s death had taken its toll on her. Sombra was there for intel on the Talon facility as well as infiltration--with Genji at least she wouldn’t be scouting things out alone. Hanzo, resting his eyes in the corner, would provide cover fire. Jack was there for logistics and mission oversight. D.Va was for a swift distraction and transporting Rei out if necessary. Lúcio would have been the sole medic, but now Mercy was there as well. The general air of the orca was quiet and grim. Mercy glanced down at her hands and noticed they were shaking. Genji reached over and put a hand over hers.
“We’ll get her back,” he said softly, “I promise you, we’ll get her back.”
Mercy leaned her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. There were a few minutes of silence around the Orca as Tracer took them up higher and higher.
“All right,” Sombra said at last, once they were high enough in the air to comfortably move about the cabin, “Let’s talk about the mess we’re about to run into, shall we?” she said, bringing up a large purple screen, “According to Hanzo’s dog chip--”
“It’s not a dog chip,” Hanzo said, opening his eyes from the corner.
“Anyway, according to the GPS on the chip, Rei is being held in the heart of a Talon Research and Development facility several miles outside  Reykjavik, codenamed ‘Urdr.’”
“‘Urdr?’” repeated D.Va.
“Mythological reference. Talon’s suckers for it and the memo I hacked said no one was willing to try and pronounce ‘Urðarbrunnr.’ So it’s Urdr,” said Sombra, “They’re dramatic like that. Moving on. Lucky for us, this particular R&D facility is pure Talon. No shell corporation cover for it to draw attention to us. Talon’s worked very hard to make sure no one is aware this facility exists, so that gives us a lot of cover to carry out this op. However, that also means ridiculously high security. We’ll have to make this a night-op so there’s fewer personnel on site for us to deal with.”
“Does Rei have that kind of time?” asked Mercy.
Sombra brought up a separate purple screen, “According to their records for Widowmaker, it took them six days to break Amélie--”
“Break Amélie?!” Mercy repeated, “Wait--You think they’re going to use her to...”
“Talon making a new Widowmaker, or Widowmaker-equivalent has been a fear of ours for some time,” said Sombra, “It makes the most sense for why they would kidnap her but not kill her, since there’s not a lot Rei could actually tell them about Overwatch.”
Mercy’s hand went over her mouth. Genji put a hand around her shoulders, just as fearful.
“But it took them six days to break Amélie, and she was a civilian,” Sombra went on, “Rei has training. She has the dragon. She’s tough. If we’re going to do this, we have to do this right because we’ll have maybe one shot at this before they realize we can track Rei and take her somewhere we can’t trace her. We’ve got one shot, and we can’t screw it up, because we’re the only chance she has of getting out of there.”
---
Lights and dark shapes wheeled overhead as Rei drifted in and out of darkness and semiconsciousness. She was cold. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been warm. She didn’t know where she was or how long she had been here. Her mind reached back to London. An attack, Zenyatta on the ground, someone had to protect him. She fought. Zenyatta wasn’t the target. Stupid girl. And now she was...
One eye flickered open to more fluorescent lights and a masked figure in the corner of her vision, looking at a tablet. Not safe here. She had to move. Legs didn’t seem to be listening. She moved her wrist and it stopped short, aching. Straps. There were straps digging into her cheeks. A breathing mask. Not breathing. The air was sour and made her eyes heavy. Sleep. More drugs. Her eyes opened blearily. There were figures in gray and red. Masks covering their faces.
“She’s getting twitchy again,” a voice spoke.
“Up the dosage,” muttered another.
“Wait,” another voice spoke.
Rei managed to get her other eye open and she blinked a few times to see a narrow figure topped by short-cropped red hair, graying at the sides and widow’s peak standing over her. One blue eye was framed by a silvery mask.
“I think we got off on the wrong foot,” said Moira, as Rei’s vision clarified, “I think we can talk to each other civilly, don’t you?”
Rei’s hand jerked up and stopped short. She glanced down to see it secured by leather and steel.
“Where’m I?” Rei said, eyes sluggishly flicking about.
“You’re in a dream, dear,” said Moira.
“No’m not...” Rei said quietly.
“Perceptive little thing, aren’t you?” said Moira.
“You...” Rei’s eyes squinted at Moira, “...Moira.”
“A very perceptive little thing,” said Moira.
“You’re... a thief,” the words fell out of Rei. She was clinging to any thought her mind could bring up like a ship’s mast in a storm.
Moira blinked a few times. “Excuse me?” she said, with a slight smile.
“Stole from Mom... made... horrible things....” Rei started to drift off then seemed to snap back to semi-consciousness, “Mom--!” she said with a slight start, but Moira put a hand on her shoulder, less a calming action than emphasizing all the restraints securing her to the stretcher.
“She can’t help you here,” said Moira, brushing the back of her hand along the side of Rei’s face.
“Take me back,” Rei said softly, “I want... I want to go home.”
“You are home, dear. You’ll see that, soon enough. It’ll be easier when you stop fighting. You’ll see how much we have in common.”
“...all you can do is take from Mom...” said Rei, her head lolling around.
Moira suddenly stiffened. “...what did you say?” she said.
“You just... take what Mom makes and you make it horrible... that’s... all you can do. That’s what you’re going to do to me, right? That’s...” Rei’s hand balled into a fist even in its restraints, “That’s all you can do...”
Moira’s mouth drew to a thin line, one corner of it twitched momentarily before she spoke again. “Darling, you have no idea what I can do,” said Moira, before looking sharply over to the labtech,“Up the dosage.”
“She’s almost at the EEG threshhold for Mnemosyne,” one of the labtechs started, “If she’s conscious just a little longer---”
 “Up. The. Dosage,” said Moira.
One of the labtechs hesitantly clicked something on Rei’s IV and Rei’s eyes rolled back in her head before shutting.
“You’re going to break,” Moira said, as a little bit of drool trailed out of the corner of Rei’s mouth, “You’re going to break or you’re going to die here. We have all the time in the world. I can’t say the same for you.”
---
If you’re going to do something stupid, may as well try to be smart about how you go about it, Aedan thought to himself as he tapped away at his lab terminal, He had complained to his mother plenty times before about how little he actually knew about Talon’s operations internationally, but as far as operations here, well... Aedan gave a glance to the stylized thumbnail sized blacklight tattoo on the underside of his wrist and brought it to a scanner next to the monitor. It didn’t hurt to be a VIP. Guard shifts. Agent shifts. Labtech shifts. Labtech profiles. Rei’s profile. A surprising amount was laid bare. Not Rei’s lab videos--he imagined for the same reason he didn’t have access to the lab videos for ‘Project Widow.’ But her personal effects brought with her when she was captured were, surprisingly, not incinerated yet. He figured as far as finding resources to get her out of here, there was a good place to start.
There were a surprising amount of areas of Urdr open to him as well, including the storage lockers and the armory. He easily accessed the effects confiscated from Rei, finding clothing--a yellow ochre dress, some olive green leggings, socks and canvas sneakers, and a bra. There was her hair ribbon as well, which he pocketed, figuring she’d want something to tie her hair back with.
“No comms, no weapons,” muttered Aedan, rifling through the dress’s pockets, “Thought you were supposed to be a ninja...”
A small metal sound hit the floor next to the locker and Aedan glanced down to see a small gold object gleaming against the gray of the floor. He stooped and picked it up, seeing it was a small pendant on a thin chain. He squinted at the pendant. It seemed terribly worn down, but he could make out a nearly rubbed-out circular shape atop some... wings? An older version of the Valkyrie suit’s symbol, perhaps? He shrugged and pocketed the necklace, leaving the rest of the civilian clothes back in the locker. Something this old and worn had to have some sentimental value.
From there, it was a simple matter of cross-referencing which Talon agents fit Rei’s measurements, which Talon labtechs fit his own measurements, and which were currently out on assignment in other parts of the world, visiting the armory, punching in their ID number, and boom: Some new-car-smelling Talon assassin and labtech armor was pushed out by the automated armorer. And that was another thing-- how much he was able to just... walk around the facility without anyone questioning him. No one questioned him walking through the facility with Talon assassin and labtech armor under each arm. No one questioned him tucking the Talon assassin and labtech armor into his locker. It had never occurred to him that being Moira’s son was a position of power. He had been so used to the murmurs of ‘That clone thing’ and ‘Moira’s special little project’ that it never occurred to him what it meant that he was Moira’s special little project.
So much loyalty was assumed by virtue of the memories Moira implanted in him. In a way, it was... depressing, stressful even. In a sense, he knew he was an extension of his mother. He knew that she had given him her qualities to question and challenge everything. They had made a scientist, not a soldier, but so assured was Moira in her own way of thinking that the fact that he might be working counter to her goals was... impossible. There was another explanation, and the idea that he might be working against Talon was so unimaginable that even when he was doing things he considered out of the ordinary and worthy of questioning, they were not questioned. He got nearly everything he needed to do to get Rei out of there done by little past the afternoon, but there were still loose ends. He needed a distraction. Something bigger than Rei. Something to overwhelm the facility.
He sat in the lab for hours, wracking his brain. What. What could he do that couldn’t be traced back to him that would cause a big enough distraction to get Rei out of here? Nothing to burn the whole facility down, no, of course not.
“Incoming Call from Seye Ogundimu,” the Lab AI spoke.
“Accepted,” said Aedan.
“Eeeeyyyyy Twiggy!” Seye’s voice came on the line.
“Beefcake,” Aedan said in turn.
There was a snort on the other end. “How’s Iceland?”
“Surprisingly not very icy,” said Aedan, “Thailand?”
“Pretty Thai...” said Seye.
“Good,” said Aedan, “Good to hear some can keep it consistent.
“Who are you talking to?” a slightly French accented voice came on the line, “Oh-- The clone. Carry on.”
“Who was that?” said Aedan.
“Oh it’s Faustine. Don’t worry about her. She’s just here to judge your immortal soul,” said Seye.
“You’re hilarious,”said Faustine, flatly.
“Oh no worries at all,” said Aedan, “Clone, remember? And ginger at that. Nary a soul to be seen.”
Seye snorted again. “So how’s Urdr treating you?”
“A bit gloomy compared to Oasis,” said Aedan, turning around in his swivel chair, “But I suppose it doesn’t matter to the Amalgams,” he said, looking around the lab, “So it’s as good as any.”
“You’re still working with those blobby things?” said Seye.
“Until we can get Reyes stable, yes, we’re still working with the blobby things,” said Aedan with a slight eye roll.
There was a huff on Seye’s end. “Just be careful, all right? I know--scientist, and all, but you remember what happened last Halloween.”
There was a beat and Aedan’s face lit up. “Yes...” he said, “I do remember.”
“...had to break out the flamethrowers and everything....” said Seye.
“Yes...” said Aedan.
“We’re going to be late,” Faustine spoke up again.
“Yeah yeah, I’ll be there,” said Seye, “Hey, I gotta go. Take care of yourself, all right?”
“Yeah,” said Aedan, “I will.”
“Later!” Seye’s voice sounded over the comm before cutting out.
“Later,” said Aedan, knowing Seye wouldn’t hear him.
Aedan’s eyes flicked to the nanite amalgams in their glass tubes lining the walls.
“...Right,” he said softly.
---
Aedan was back at the facility apartment well before Moira. He cooked, as he liked. Portobello mushrooms with poached eggs and spinach. Something with a decent amount of attention and skill. Moira had to practically drag herself through the door.
“Wretched girl,” Moira muttered under her breath. Not a greeting. Not addressed to him, but he took it as one all the same.
“Asset proving difficult again, I take it?” said Aedan, putting two plates down on the table.
“She has the worst of both of them,” Moira muttered as Aedan placed a glass of riesling in front of her, “You can just tell. A spiteful, monstrous little creature.”
“Figures as such,” said Aedan with a shrug.
Moira looked down at her plate. “Oh... A thaisce...” she said, running her hand through her graying red hair, “It’s lovely.”
“I figured it would be another stressful day for you,” said Aedan with a smile, “Might want something easy on the stomach.”
Moira sectioned off her mushroom and egg, yellow yolk bleeding out onto her plate, “Sometimes I wonder if you’re the only thing I ever got right,” she said quietly.
“I’m not perfect,” Aedan said with a shrug.
“But you’re human,” said Moira, taking a bite of her food, “Or... at least what humans should be.”
“...I wish you’d met better humans in your life, Mum,” said Aedan, eating his own food much more easily this time, “I don’t think I’m that high of a bar.”
Moira snickered a little. “Don’t worry about me. We’re going to change things,” she said, some firmness in her voice, some confidence, “I promise you that much.”
Aedan just smiled and nodded.
They finished their dinner. Aedan did the dishes. Moira excused herself to her room to look over more lab footage and review correspondence. Aedan almost felt a little bad at how easily he he was able to tell what would happen next. Moira was curled up on her bed within the hour, fully dressed, deeply asleep. Of course that was to be expected with the near all-nighter she pulled before. He knew he wouldn’t have another window like this. He walked out of the apartment.
He headed to Urdr lockers. He got into the labtech clothing, slipping the necklace into the pocket of his labcoat, put on the mask, surgical cap, and goggles, and headed down the halls to Lab 9 with the assassin armor under his arm. He made a point of stopping and talking with other labtechs on the way, making a shell game of it, changing his position in the hallway, handing the armor to the other labtech and asking if it felt too heavy, changing position with them, then taking it back and continuing on his way to Lab 9.  He glanced at his watch on the way there. 9:41. One Labtech on duty. He opened the door to Lab 9 and strolled in. The labtech wasn’t even looking at Rei, and why would he be? She was just as unconscious as before. He was fiddling away at his comm, no doubt texting about more interesting things, and Aedan couldn’t blame him for that. Aedan didn’t have to be in view of the camera’s lens to unplug it. The labtech didn’t even look up at Aedan apparently stretching in the direction of the security camera. The Labtech did make the effort to glance up and put his comm away as Aedan approached him, though.
“Sturluson?” the labtech said, “I thought they had you at the labsite in--”
Aedan put a hand on the labtech’s shoulder and his own abilities and the biotic rig did the rest. Aedan’s breath shuddered slightly, sucking energy right out of the labtech’s muscles and nervous system until the labtech dropped to the floor, unconscious. Aedan rolled his wrist. “Nothing personal,” he said quietly, before stepping next to the stretcher where Rei was strapped down. He looked her over a moment. She seemed to be mostly unharmed. No visible bruising. They had wrapped her up in one of their on-site operating gowns, a slightly more dignified step up from a typical hospital gown with fasteners in the front and back, as well as along the shoulders, but... still a hospital gown. Not something she could just run around the facility in. He put the assassin armor down on her stomach, and she was about as responsive as a pile of gravel. He worked quietly and efficiently, undoing the anesthetic mask from Rei’s face, unstrapping her wrists, taking her arm, gingerly pulling the needle of the IV of sedatives out, snapping the needle off, stopping the tube off and re-taping it down so it appeared as if she still had an IV in it for any other guards or labtechs he might run into coming out of here. He re-strapped her wrists down--just for the time being. If the restraints were off it would rouse suspicion.
“And here...” he unlocked the wheels of her stretcher, “We go,” he said, having to throw far more of his weight than he thought he’d have to against the stretcher to move it forward. He grunted with the effort of simply moving it across the lab, then he had to negotiate with opening the door, stretching awkwardly over Rei to reach the panel next to it, then struggling with the door sliding shut on the stretcher several times as he attempted to push the stretcher through, then he himself getting clipped by the door when he attempted to get through the door as well.. He huffed, not panting--he could have panted but he really didn’t want to admit how much that last effort had put him out of breath-- before taking Rei’s stretcher and moving down the hall. Rei was (thankfully) unconscious through all of this. “Okay,” Aedan said quietly to himself, “Just need to get you to my lab before--”
Rei groaned a little in her sleep.
“...Before you wake up,” said Aedan quietly, and then began pushing her stretcher harder and moving faster, “Mum really wasn’t kidding about that dragon metabolism thing, was she?”
“‘zmum...” Rei mumbled from the stretcher.
“No, no, we’re not talking, you’re still asleep,” said Aedan, moving the stretcher a little faster. He had to get to his own lab. He had put the security cameras on a loop there. It would give them time.
“Hey--” another labtech stepped up alongside the stretcher, “Do we have clearance to move the asset?”
“I have clearance,” said Aedan, lying, continuing to push the stretcher, his lab was close, “But if you want to take it up with Moira at the on-site residences, be my guest. You know how she loves people interrupting her in her spare time.”
“...Do you need a hand?” said the labtech.
“Do you have clearance?” asked Aedan.
The Labtech immediately shut up at this and continued on his way. Aedan wasn’t sure how much time he had bought himself.
“Nnh...” Rei’s brow furrowed.
“Still asleep,” Aedan said to himself, rushing the stretcher down the halls, “Just a little longer...” he said as they reached his own lab. It was another painful bit of maneuvering with the sliding door and the panel and getting the stretcher through (the stretcher really was meant to be pushed by two people), before finally getting Rei into his own lab and buckling over to catch his breath and try and calm his nerves. “Okay,” he said to himself, “Okay. Okay. Step one. Done. Step two--”
Rei groaned a little from the stretcher. Aedan exhaled, then walked over and unstrapped her wrists, then the straps across her chest and waist and legs. Rei was mumbling sleepily as the straps came off. She stirred slightly and Aedan flinched back from the straps at her ankles before stepping over to better look at her face. Aedan could see her eyes moving beneath her lids, unsure if it was REM sleep. Her lips were parted but her jaw was tight. He noticed a crusty line of dried drool leading down her cheek from the corner of her mouth and unthinkingly brought up a gloved hand and began gently flaking it off with his thumb.
Her eyes flicked open.
Then flicked to him.
He was stunned for half a second, his thumb still on her cheek. “Uh... hey,” he started.
She punched him in the face.
The labtech mask absorbed most of the shock of the blow but still it was strong enough to send him reeling back, the labtech goggles cracked in one lens from the strike. Rei sat bolt upright, then swayed from the rush of blood from her head, pressing her hands to her forehead, then glanced down at the straps still on her ankles and began feverishly getting them off. She was terrified, disoriented. She moved to get off the straps and then moved to scramble off of the stretcher, but her movements were clumsy, sluggish, and imbalanced.
“Wait--Wait!” Aedan rushed over, managing to catch her before she fell to the floor, supporting her upper torso as it hung off the stretcher.
“Get off of me!” she said, trying to shove him back. Even with all the drugs in her system she was incredibly strong and it was a struggle just to keep her from tumbling to the floor.
“Listen--” Aedan tried to calm her down but she was still scrambling in his grip, “Just listen to me for one second!” Rei looked into his eyes, into the cracked labtech goggles, fight-or-flight still flashing in her own eyes when Aedan said, “Who do you think undid those straps!?”
Rei paused, then looked at the straps on her stretcher, then to him.
“Just...” Aedan pushed her weight back slightly so that she was centered on the stretcher again before taking a step away from her and bringing his hands up, “It’s okay,” he said, slowly reaching into his labcoat pocket and pulling out her necklace and hair ribbon. He took a tentative step forward and set the necklace and hair ribbon down on the stretcher next to her. She quickly snatched them up, clutching them both to her chest before looking back at him, brow crinkled in confusion. “I’m not going to hurt you,” he said calmly.
“What is this?!” said Rei, “What’s going on!?”
Aedan took a deep breath, then took off the surgical cap, labtech mask, and goggles. Rei’s eyes widened at finally seeing his face.
“...Aedan?” said Rei.
“This is a rescue,” said Aedan, “I’m getting you out of here.”
A long pause passed between them.
“What?” said Rei.

Common Mobile App Development Mistakes To Avoid in 2021
Tumblr media
With the invention of smartphones, mobile applications have greatly simplified people's lives. This has led to the mobile apps development company in bangalore industry emerging as the most lucrative of all. Especially with a melee competition between iOS and Android, you can see new applications arriving on the scene every day.
Both game stores have more than 1 million applications each. In such a scenario, companies struggle with each other to create first-hand applications than others. In such a case, it is clear that many common errors occur that are not seen.
Have you ever thought why some applications are better than others even though they are very similar in terms of application?
This is because some apps are perfect in terms of functionality and features, while others are trapped by common bugs.
This differentiates successful applications from unsuccessful ones. After having hands-on experience with both types of applications, I list common mistakes to avoid in your future projects.
Not adapting to market changes
Imagine a mobile application that allows you to make 6-second clips and share your life moments with others. Sounds familiar? No, I am not talking about Instagram, Tik Tok, or Boomerang. I mean Vine.
Vine was a free mobile app founded in 2012 that allowed users to record and share an unlimited number of short looping video clips with a maximum length of six seconds.
it became the fastest growing best mobile app development company India in the world.
Vine was used by actors, singers, and celebrities, but also regular users. Thanks to Vine, many people who are famous celebrities today got their initial fame.
So what went wrong? Ankur Thakkar, Vine's managing editor, said the network did not send anything for a year. So the main problem was that the application stopped following new trends and attracting users, in addition to not developing new functions.
It's critical to adapt your product to market conditions and keep track of your competition. The new functionalities increase the participation and the user experience of the mobile applications.
You can see from the Vine example that even if your product is great and gaining popularity, you need to remember to constantly take care of your top-notch user experience. Failing to adapt to market changes is one of the most common mobile application development mistakes to any avoid.
Have ambiguity about device and operating system compatibility
Providing small details about your proposal can jeopardize the relationship you want to build with your clients. If you avoid specifying your estimates, including iOS development only, for example, your customer can expect costs to include Android.
If it is not intended to work for iPad, it is your responsibility to repair it, free of charge, without deviating from the contract. Now, that can kill the project entirely, regardless of how close the deal is.
Therefore, you must ensure that the contract indicates the version, operating system, and device compatibility.
Have an application that lacks a clear purpose
If your application lacks a purpose, who will it be for? Not having a well-defined purpose to develop an application is the biggest mistake. Too often, apps are created as competitive tools to generate some curiosity just because others are doing it.
However, an mobile app development companies in bangalore without a real reason is not a recipe for more success. It only indicates an infallible failure.
Only when your application responds to some genuine concern can it be successful and rated as useful. When your app is unique and useful, it can serve as a definitive bookmark, especially for loyal users.
Build quality control throughout development cycles rather than leaving it for last. Compare the purpose of the application with the development process and run concurrent tests during development to avoid errors.
Not building an MVP
Making an MVP is a useful idea that can prevent your application from being a fiasco. An MVP or Minimum Viable Product offers you the opportunity to progressively test your product in economic situations, where you have day-to-day users to assess the exposure of the application. It is one of the trends in the mobile application market, used by most of the companies.
With a minimum viable product for startups, you'll spend the leanest assets possible to attract your first users, receive criticism, and understand your target market.
No mobile app monetization
Before spending money, time, and effort to push apps, set aside some work to plan mobile app monetization models. Building an app is one, however, interacting with target people to download apps is an unmistakable game. This is one of the crucial mistakes to avoid when developing an application for business.
There is an important test in the app stores with the argument that numerous applications are downloaded every day. It's pretty much infinite the app will download in case you don't have a solid app getting started plan.
Examine your objective requirements, advance to the app home page, get studies on your app, bundle it, use influencers to increase the promotion of your app, and distribute it effectively across multiple platforms. The implementation of this strategy is also responsible for the trends of the mobile application market in the current scenario.
Complexity
Another common user design mistake includes application complexity when it is difficult for the user to understand the functionality and usability of the application. Similarly, as a designer makes use of the best visual imagination and various color codes to deliver a message, it is also necessary to have a UX list of mobile apps development company India that makes use of significantly fewer steps to reach any other part of the application. When there is a lot of text or a complex flow that puzzles the user, it will cause them to exit the application and go somewhere else.
Spam notifications
Let's be honest about it, getting a lot of notifications from an app is annoying. Yes, you need to communicate with the user via notifications about new feature updates or subscriptions, but you should also refrain from spamming your users. You should try to build a proper balance between being aggressive with notifications and maintaining your presence. Focus on reporting relevant and important information rather than just spamming.
Partner with an inexperienced company for application development needs
This could be the biggest mistake of all those discussed above. Handing over your mobile app development requirements to an inexperienced or inexperienced company can be detrimental to your business. The decision may not only affect your customer base, but also your bottom line.
App development requires deep business understanding, analysis of customer requirements, development and design experience, best testing practices, etc.
Centimeter by centimeter imitation of competitors
When a successful business idea takes the form of an application, it attracts a lot of new competition in the market. There is nothing wrong with taking a page out of your competitor's book, but deciding to imitate your competitor inch by inch can be a huge mistake on your part. You need to instill some new ideas and approaches into the app, and try to bring a fresh experience to your users that none of the competing apps offer. Blind imitation of competitors is one thing, most people end up doing despite knowing that it is a glitch.
Too much feature stuffing
An application created by a reputable application design company should not have too many functionalities and features. If you are loaded with too much stuff, you can end up giving the impression that you are not clear about what you want to present to users. If users do not understand the specific reason for the application, there is a possibility that it will be uninstalled very soon. It is always better to be clear and concise about the content of an application.
Neglecting compatibility with other applications
There will not be just one application on a mobile or smart device, there are many applications installed. Sometimes one is too focused on developing an application that the compatibility factor can slip. If the application is not properly compatible with the rest of the applications or the device, a problem may arise for the user, such as device lag or abrupt closing of applications. If these things happen too much, the user will think carefully about getting rid of your app.
Summarizing…

Car Companies Want to Monitor Your Every Move With Emotion-Detecting AI
On February 18, executives from the technology firm Cerence rang the Nasdaq opening bell, then stepped into a meeting with their investors and representatives from some of the largest automakers in the world. Over several hours, they pitched a strategy designed to help double the company’s revenue in five years: Record every movement, every glance, every smile, frown, and wrinkled brow of drivers across the world—then sell the resulting data for a profit.
Over the last century, the car has been enshrined as a quintessential piece of Americana—a symbol of freedom and self-expression. It is a space where people share their first kisses, cry after work, and soothe restless babies to sleep, comforted by a sense of autonomy and control. But as the Cerence presentation laid bare, the car’s second century will be very different.
The Burlington, Mass. company is far from a household name, but its technology—including microphones, virtual assistants, and gaze-monitoring cameras—is already installed in more than 325 million vehicles, from which it uploads more than 100 million data transactions to the cloud every month, according to its investor documents. Very soon, Cerence announced, it plans to deepen that data mining operation with in-cabin cameras linked to emotion-detecting AI—algorithms that monitor minute changes in facial expression in order to determine a person’s emotional state at any given time.
“This is data that I think is the untapped potential that Cerence has for the future,” Prateek Kathpal, the company’s chief technology officer, told investors. “What we’re looking at is sharing this data back with the [automakers] and helping them monetize it.”
Over the next two years, companies like Cerence, Affectiva, Xperi, and Eyeris plan to roll out emotion- and object-detecting systems for cars in partnership with many of the world’s largest automakers, according to company documents and interviews with executives. Their plans are bolstered by a European Union law mandating that all new cars be equipped with at least rudimentary driver-monitoring by mid-2022, and a similar bill recently introduced in the U.S. Senate.
To the public and to legislators, automakers market the systems as safety features. If a car can detect that a driver is angry or looking at their phone immediately before a crash, these companies reason, the onboard AI may be able to offer a warning the next time it senses similar behavior. Or, if it can determine how a child is positioned in the back seat, the car might deploy airbags more effectively in the event of a collision.
But safety is only one attraction of in-cabin monitoring. The systems also hold huge potential for harvesting the kind of behavioral data that Google, Facebook, and other surveillance capitalists have exploited to target ads and influence purchasing habits.
Automakers and advertisers have come to a “vast realization” that as cars become more autonomous and embedded with screens, “many passengers in your vehicle are kind of a captive audience in an entertainment context,” Gabi Zijderveld, Affectiva’s chief marketing officer, told Motherboard.
Affectiva spun off from the MIT Media Lab in 2009 and has been a pioneer in the often-controversial field of emotion-detecting AI. The company has its roots in marketing and consumer analytics and has been tapped by some of the country’s largest brands to measure focus group reactions to advertisements and entertainment. But over the last four years, it has devoted a significant amount of its attention to developing in-cabin monitoring and has worked with automakers including Kia, BMW, and Porsche. It has also pitched its technology to rideshare companies, suggesting in one product brochure that riders might be willing to be recorded and have their emotions analyzed in vehicles in exchange for free or discounted trips. “That data is tremendously valuable, from a monetization perspective, to the advertisers,” Zijderveld said.
Competitors Xperi and Eyeris are also looking at ways to capitalize, or help automakers capitalize, on the data their products gather.
Jeff Jury, the general manager of Xperi’s automotive group, told Motherboard that the company’s in-cabin monitoring system is a safety feature first, but added that Xperi is exploring ways to combine the system with the sophisticated entertainment recommendation engine it recently acquired through a merger with TiVo.
Eyeris CEO Modar Alaoui likewise told Motherboard that while his company’s technology is primarily designed to improve safety, “we do foresee at some point that [automakers] will try to leverage the data for several use cases, whether it be for advertising or [determining] insurance” premiums.
Inform and consent
Cerence, Affectiva, Xperi, and Eyeris officials all told Motherboard that their companies simply create products with many possible functions. It’s up to the car manufacturers, they said, to decide how the systems will be used, what data will be collected, how that data will be processed internally, to whom it can be sold, and whether to share any of that information with the customer.
With the exception of Volvo, all the automakers contacted for this story—including GM, Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, and Kia—either did not respond to requests for comment or declined to answer questions about how they will inform drivers about the data collected from their vehicles. Volvo does not currently have plans to integrate systems that monitor passengers or use emotion recognition, a company official told Motherboard.
European Union regulators have prepared for the likelihood that automakers will want to use in-cabin monitoring systems as data vacuums.
In January, the European Data Protection Board issued guidelines governing the use of data from connected cars. They mandate that, among other restrictions, no personally identifying information can leave the car without explicit driver or passenger consent, and that a car cannot collect any more data than is needed to operate its safety system or to perform another task for which the owner has given specific consent. As a result, it is shaping up to be very difficult for automakers to deploy the kinds of in-cabin monitoring systems in the EU that they are developing for American and Asian markets, Anne-Gabrielle Haie, a Belgium-based data protection attorney with DLA Piper, told Motherboard.
The U.S. is another matter. Several laws, ranging from the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) to the Federal Trade Commission Act (FTCA), provide limited mechanisms to prevent companies from egregiously and repeatedly misusing the kind of data an in-cabin monitoring system will collect. For example, under the FCRA, a car manufacturer would have to notify its customers before providing certain kinds of information to the driver’s insurance agency.
But the laws currently in place are insufficient to protect consumers from the technology that will soon be rolling off production lines, Maneesha Mithal, associate director of the FTC’s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, told Motherboard. “That’s part of the reason why the majority of [FTC] commissioners have recommended the enactment of federal privacy legislation that would set up the rules of the road in this area,” she said.
In-cabin monitoring systems will also be highly attractive to police, who, as Forbes has documented in detail, have been demanding data from connected cars for years. In the U.S., there is nothing to stop police from going after that data, whereas the EU rules place special considerations on the circumstances under which law enforcement can access data that may evidence criminal activity, such as speeding.
The Georgia Supreme Court recently ruled that police must have a warrant before accessing car data, but the case law in this specific space is in its infancy, Chelsey Colbert, the policy counsel for mobility and location data at the Future of Privacy Forum, told Motherboard. “If car manufacturers are worried about law enforcement access, they should consider privacy and security by design, she said. “For example, they could use technologies that don’t collect or store identifiable data.”
On the edge of privacy
Twenty of the largest automakers have promised to self-govern their privacy practices for connected cars and, in 2014, signed on to an unenforceable, industry-created set of principles. There is ample evidence those guidelines won’t stop them from cashing in on driver data, though. GM, for example, is one of the signatories. But in 2018, the Detroit Free Press revealed that the company had collected data on the radio listening habits of more than 90,000 drivers in an attempt to find correlations between what people listened to in their cars and what products they purchased.
Affectiva, Xperi, and Eyeris say that their systems are all designed so that the most sensitive data, such as actual video recordings of passengers, can be processed in the car—known as edge processing—rather than uploaded to a cloud controlled by an automaker or rideshare company.
But since the automakers are setting their own rules, they could, of course, decide they want that data after all. Cerence’s boasts about the amount of data it uploads to the cloud from vehicles each month suggest its partners—which, in addition to automakers, includes Microsoft, LG, and a number of other tech companies—have little interest in ensuring edge processing for privacy purposes.
“If they install sensors in the car, it’s going to go out of the car and be viewed by the car manufacturer,” Ben Volkow, the CEO of Otonomo, a car data brokerage based in Israel, told Motherboard. “[Automakers] need to get approval, and after you get approval you need to give the driver the opportunity to, at any point, say, ‘please erase my data.’ That’s supposed to be supported, but I’ll tell you in reality it’s definitely not supported.”

Hypersonic Missiles Aimed at Healthcare
By KIM BELLARD
The end of one decade and the beginning of another seems to be a time when various pundits like to look back and/or forward.  In particular, I’ve seen a lot of such articles about tech, both noting important technologies of the 2010’s and speculating on the tech coming in the 2020’s.
Oddly enough, the article about new tech that struck me the most was one that seemingly has nothing to do with healthcare, but which I think has important lessons for it.  It is the introduction of hypersonic missiles.
Avangard missile. Credit: Russian Defense Ministry
If you don’t follow weapons development closely (and I don’t usually), hypersonic missiles are ones that can fly at several multiples of the speed of sound, such as Mach 5 and above.  They fly so fast that there is virtually no defense against them.  Existing anti-missile defenses are problematic enough against conventional missiles, but a hypersonic missile is at its target before a defense system can react, due to its speed, low altitude, and maneuverability.
Russia just claimed that its hypersonic missile, the Avangard, has been deployed.  Some reports claim Avangard can fly as fast as Mach 27.  Russia has been working on the technology for as many as thirty years, tested it in 2016, and in 2018 Vladimir Putin made it public, describing it as: “It heads to target like a meteorite, like a fireball.”
The U.S. is also working on hypersonic missiles, but has not made it as high a priority.  Our version is not expected to be available “for a couple of years,” according to Defense Secretary Mark Esper.  China, India, and France are also supposedly working on their versions.
youtube
Many experts downplay Avangard’s importance.  While it cannot be stopped, it also would not knock out the U.S.’s offensive missile systems, so an attack would still lead to massive retaliation.  Some are also skeptical that the Russian technology will work as promised.
What Putin may like best is that it allows him to boast: “Not a single country possesses hypersonic weapons, let alone continental-range hypersonic weapons…The West and other nations were ‘playing catch-up with us.'”
We’re spending billions of dollars on aircraft carriers that don’t work and fighter plane that don’t fly, which seems a little like the old adage that generals are always fighting the last war.  The new wars may be fought in cyberspace, and/or with inexpensive drones and IEDs, not to mention with hypersonic missiles.
We knew that the technology for hypersonic missiles was possible.  We knew our adversaries were putting an emphasis on developing it.  We knew we’d need some of our own at some point.  And we had a pretty good idea when one of those adversaries would deploy its first instance of the technology.  But we had other, more expensive, more traditional priorities.
This is what makes me think of healthcare.
Healthcare is still pouring lots of money into its versions of aircraft carriers (think hospitals), fighter planes (think physicians), and bombers (think prescription drugs).  We’re still spend most of our public policy discussions on the need for increasing coverage because our healthcare system is so expensive, rather than admitting that coverage is so important mainly because our healthcare system is so expensive.  Need for coverage is not the problem, it is the result of the problem.
We seem to assume, or at least expect, that our future healthcare system will look very much like our current healthcare system, just more expensive.  What we are not preparing for are healthcare’s versions of hypersonic missiles — technologies that can strike so quickly that our healthcare system can’t respond.
As Steven Simon wrote about hypersonic missiles: “If past is prologue, deployment of the systems is going to take place well before their ramifications are fully understood.”  We want to try to debate, discuss, and think through all the ramifications before making changes in healthcare, but we may not have that luxury.
For example, many think that CRISPR is going to be a game changer.  We’re investigating, using all due caution.  Meanwhile, of course, China is plowing ahead, perhaps with fewer ethical qualms.  They may have sentenced the scientist behind the world’s first CRISPR babies to jail, but, meanwhile three such babies have been born.
youtube
The U.S. may have shaky data privacy standards, but what China is doing with aggregating huge data sets is way beyond even our privacy laws, and is helping to fuel their A.I. development.   Healthcare is a key sector.
There are technologies out there that we know are coming, which people in the U.S. are working on, but for which the regulatory, political, and payment systems we have in place are not at all ready: AI, CRISPR, 3D printing, cybercurrency, among others.  When we all have 24/7 monitoring, and we will, who will have access to that information, who will be obligated to act on it, and will be object?
The example I keep wondering about is: when — not if — AI doctors arrive, who will license them, how, for where?
Healthcare is not prepared for the future, and that future will be sooner than it thinks.
The future is going to be a lot like hypersonic missiles.  It will come fast.  It won’t look like what we’re used to.  It will arrive before we’re really ready for it or can react to it.  And it won’t come as a complete surprise.
Credit: World Economic Forum
The U.S. should be scouring the world for technologies and approaches that deliver the best care in the most cost-effective manner.  There are already many examples, but we think that they are just “developing nations” solutions — ignoring the fact that some portions of our population suffer developing nations’ health outcomes.  We should be trying to crash our existing cost structures, not enable them.
So, let’s be thinking of not how 2030 will be like 2020, but of how it will be different.  Let’s spend less time on further developing 2010’s technologies and more time delivering 2020’s technologies.  Let’s make that future what we want, not what we’re resigned to.
If Kara Swisher can imagine our lives without our mobile devices by 2030, what we can imagine for healthcare?
Kim Bellard is editor of Tincture and thoughtfully challenges the status quo, with a constant focus on what would be best for people’s health.

Personality Breathes Life Into The Customer Chatbot Experience
Make those interactions with chatbots come alive. Here’s how…
If legendary actress, chanteuse, comedienne, and style icon Mae West was an expert in user experience (UX), she might now be famous for the chatbot design principle: “It’s not the bots in your life that matter, it’s the life in your bots.”
Tumblr media
Mae West in 1936 (Wikipedia public domain image)
Actually, both parts of that would-be statement are correct:
The work that your chatbot will carry out is vital because it provides the reason for the botification of that task in someone’s life.
But the style, tone and attitude of the chatbot — the personality — that is defined during the design process is what will determine the success of the chatbot. This personality is the key to bringing the chatbot user a great experience, and not there is nothing better than a reputable experience to get more customers and retain existing ones.
Tumblr media
Exploring the fascinating personality of the Spanish language Politibot.io chatbot for Facebook Messenger and Telegram. That’s a great introduction to the start of a beautiful chatbot relationship!
Personality: an uninterrupted series of successful gestures
 — F. Scott Fitzgerald (“The Great Gatsby)
Yes, friends, personality is the new user experience. But, designing that personality to resonate with the chatbot user is a science and, at the same time, an art.
“It’s no coincidence that both Howdy and X.ai , a startup whose robot intelligently schedules e-mail meetings, will hire writers with performing arts funds to help define the UX of their products.” — The next phase of UX: design of Chatbot personalities .
Fortunately, little by little we are experiencing the death of that hostile concept of “the user” and of “using” a “system”. Instead, we’re see the emergence of a human design narrative focused on the dialog between people and machines by having a natural conversation .
Personality, therefore, is fundamental to the success of this seemingly natural interaction between the human and the machine. Personality, like true user experience, goes much further than the transaction.
For UX professionals, what we are talking about here is anthropomorphism(not to be confused with personification). In general, you can think of anthropomorphism as the attribution of human motivations, beliefs and feelings to inanimate things like computers, vehicles, robots, and so on.
Tumblr media
Herbie the Love Bug . One of the most famous anthropomorphic vehicles. The concept of anthropomorphic vehicles has been around for a while; all have different personalities. (Image shared via Wikipedia )
It is important to realize that anthropomorphism does not mean the application of every subtle nuance and whim of human personality to the human-machine interaction. Rather, it means focusing on the dominant, memorable, and more key personality traits that are useful for the chatbot interaction in that particular context.
Ah, there’s that critical UX concept again: context. Or if, you like, “it depends”.
Therefore, for chatbot developers it is vital to make use of important and contextually relevant anthropomorphic principles to create solutions that resonate with customers in the moment, at the right time and in the right place .
When we interact with machines, we tend to project human emotions and beliefs into the inanimate computer. When the interaction is simple and pleasurable, we attribute the pleasure to the machine in the same way that we blame it when things do not work as we wish. — Don Norman, Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things.
To a certain extent, anthropomorphism of chatbots and participation in a digital conversation is determined by the artificial intelligence capability that your chatbot platform can provide. However, designers (or artists or performers if you wish) now have a central role in creating the attitude, style and tone of chatbot to reflect an appropriate personality to suit the user’s intent, either by writing prompts or messages or by recording the voice of the chatbot.
Make that personality truly personal
I have already outlined how language development and conversational scripting skills are at the center of the UX design of a chatbot, but I would like to mention some key considerations in the design of personality.
Determine the appropriate attitude, tone and style of your chatbot (i.e., the personality). This means understanding what the personality of your chatbot is, based on the context in which it will be used.
Writing about personality design is worth another article in its own right, but you can check out this piece on Medium and this webinar on how companies can create a tone and voice that really connects with their customers.
If there are toolkits available to help you craft an online personality, then explore their use to do some heavy lifting. Check out the Apple Magic Sauce tool from the University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre for example, to see what a derived digital personality might look like, but remember to refine and then test your chatbot’s personality with real customers in real situations.
Introduce your chatbot conversation saying “hello”, “hello”, etc., and respond to greetings, ask how people are doing today, and so on.
Tumblr media
Bae by PayPal: A “quirky” fashion chatbot on Facebook Messenger. Bae ?
Remember that the chatbot is not a human and therefore cannot do the same things, therefore, so do remind customers at all times what the chatbot is capable of. Know your limitations!
Tumblr media
HubSpot ‘s GrowthBot on Slack introduction
After the user’s “why are you here?” question is answered, ensure your chatbot stands out from the competition by using those personality traitsto create an memorable user experience. True, there is a debate on whether it is necessary to name a chatbot or not, but again, that is another article!
Avoid lazy, tortuous, and repetitive responses. At some point (perhaps the second attempt at the customer asking a question of the chatbot), admit defeat and seek clarification of the user intent. Imagine how a person would react if you did not stop repeating the same phrase to them constantly!
Learn from past conversational interaction decisions and behaviour, and make recommendations accordingly. For example, how your server in your favorite restaurant recommends the new specialties that they have on the menu as well as remembering your “usual”. But do this sensibly. Context is the key to achieving an excellent user experience.
Indicate that the chatbot is reflecting on a question raised, instead of giving a rapid quickfire response. Considering that, the “ I’m thinking”indicators are important. After all, chatbots are still based on emerging AI and ML technology …
Use humor (perhaps the word “wit” is better) wisely, in context, and in places and ways that make sense. Although us Irish like to say “I was only joking!” when things get complicated, I can tell you that most of the time we’re not kidding. That said, without context, sometimes chatbots making a joke about a transaction can be a little unnerving …
Tumblr media
Hipmunk on Facebook Messenger “just kidding”. Your mileage may vary on that kind of joking! Use humor wisely.
Manage the usual chatbot interaction chit-chat (“tell me a joke”, “what is the weather”), answer the question “what can you do now?”, and participate in topical events. This apparently “disposable” part of the a chatbot conversation is also an important part of the personality. For example, know which team won last weekend’s game or certain dates such as when International Women’s Day or Christmas is. These kind of issues seem boringly normal, but they are also a UX vehicle to get customers engaged and to smooth the path of the chatbot conversation towards their main intent.
Tumblr media
GrowthBot on Slack: Cartoons and jokes are provided regularly.
Try to be somewhat tolerant of chatbot input errors such as typographical mistakes and grammatical blunders, as much as how people talk and write IRL, ways to which people are already accustomed.
Be able to process jargon, abbreviations, urban lingo, emoji, and so on. This part of personality design may depend on customer tolerance and require more research and is something of a a black art. Emoji are now in use frequently in business and in everyday life, almost as a second language, so we should not lose sight of their importance and potential. Obviously, the capability of your chatbot platform again will determine to what extent you can focus on such aspects.
Tumblr media
Donut.ai bot on Slack : Talking in emoji. Could emoji be considered anthropomorphic in their own right?
Respect some basic rules of conduct and manners such as the expressions that we take for granted, like saying “thank you”, and recognizing when something is done. Also, do not forget to include clarifications to help the chatbot’s comprehension of the customer intent (“help me out here!”). In the end the goal is to recreate familiar, decent human behavior without being too human.
Tumblr media
VHI’s Vee on Facebook Messenger : Scarlet for me. This is Dublin, Ireland slang for embarrassment!
Be polite and understanding. For example, Amazon Alexa (Echo) can diplomatically tolerate many daft and even rude conversations, more so that real people can. It has been programmed to deal kindly with profanity or user frustration, regardless of age and expertise! You can learn from that design decision!
Tumblr media
VHI’s Vee on Facebook Messenger handling the more profane language aspect of runner frustration!
Avoid prolonging the conversation and try to connect with the customer intent at all times. Do not forget the problem that the customer brought to the chatbot in the first place, but also know when to close the conversation. Ask if the customer has finished with their task or if they want to continue exploring other features of the chatbot .
Avoid open questions; give options so that the user can choose. “Do you prefer Hip Hop Beyoncé or Glamor Beyoncé?” is a much better way to garner a response and to shape the customer intent that an open question like: “What do you like about Beyoncé?”
Tumblr media
PayPal Bae fashion chatbot on Facebook Messenger: Those Beyoncé options
Direct the conversation. Remember that the goal of the chatbot conversation is to solve a problem, so keep on guiding the conversation tree towards the objectives that the bot has . And when will you know when the conversation is really over for now? When the user problem or the intent is resolved.
Tumblr media
VHI Vee chatbot on Facebook Messenger adds value to get that running conversation to get you across the finish line. Until the next time!
Lead by example
In conclusion, the design of a chatbot conversation as a natural way of interacting with technology means that we are now in the era of a human-centered design approach in the digital space, and beyond a mere user-centered design. And personality is at the core of that interaction.
Who wants to be called “user” in any context?
Just imagine. What would happen if Amazon “Alexa” were an “Alex” or if all the digital assistants were of a single gender and each had the same personality, style and tone? Think about how this might change your experience and your willingness to engage, depending on the context.
A post shared by Ultan Ó Broin (@dublinrunningdad) on May 5, 2018 at 10:13am PDT
Or would it?
You must investigate and test the impact of personality nuances and differences. Very often a gut feeling based on UX guerrilla research and simple observations about how we live and work with real people with real personalities in real situations is a good starting point to understand how chatbot personality can shape the digital experience.
The personality design side of shaping a chatbot conversation is a true skill and talent; a commodity that is booming in demand. This area is a dynamic space, with many ideas that cover many domains and disciplines, but one thing is clear: thoughtful design of your chatbot’s personality is critical to making your user experience shine.
As Mae West herself said of communicating with your audience:
Personality is the glitter that sends your little gleam across the footlights and the orchestra pit into that big black space where the audience is.
Your opinions and comments on the subject are welcome, hopefully reflecting your personality!
