In a world where convenience and speed often dominate our choices, it’s essential to remember the value of supporting independent bookstores. These literary havens are more than just places to purchase books; they are vibrant hubs of culture, community, and literary diversity. In this article, we explore the compelling reasons why shopping at independent bookstores matters and why they deserve our continued support.

OH hey denver folks: Mutiny is officially the second comic shop on the planet to carry Kidd Commander books (next to Danny the Comic Shop), I met Jim and The Professor at the show this weekend and they were really into the comic! If you're in the area and want to help support me and a local shop (and also help make me look like a good investment lmaooo) maybe stop in and grab a book! I already got paid for these so don't feel bad about not going through my shop, this would save you shipping costs AND make me look like a good investment to the store. I didn't have a lot of stock so there aren't very many, I think they have volumes 1 and 2 and three copies each of the specials, so if they run out somehow or just haven't put them out yet or something going to the counter and asking about them would probably also help my reputation a little bit hehe

Mutations
In my new fantasy trilogy, Changing Waters: Jiol, two groups of citizens mutated to survive in the ocean. They are facing extreme danger at the hands of certain unmutated Jiolans. Each of their groups has its own benefits and characteristics.
The first is more commonly known in media: merpeople. In Jiol, they are actually not called this. They are called "tailed Jiolans" or if someone is being cruel, "scalies." Their tails can come in many colors, ranging from turquoise to deep blue all within the same family. This more animalistic quality leads to them having a greater connection to marine life. Unlike their other mutated and unmutated counterparts, these Jiolans can communicate with sea creatures.
The second group is called "webbed Jiolans" or "fleshies" when someone is being derogatory. As the name suggests, they have webbed hands and feet, but they also have fins on their calves. Their bodies can adjust to various depths and light faster than other Jiolans. This helps them have better vision in the darkness and brightness as well as not be in danger if they quickly swim from low in the ocean to a higher area (since this can actually be very dangerous for scuba divers too, so please be careful if you go!)
If this sounds like something that might interest you, I posted the first three chapters on Ao3 and published the book on Amazon as an ebook, paperback, hardcover, and it is currently on Kindle Unlimited until April. I hope you'll enjoy if you give it a read!

This is a background color test (using CMYK halftones) for with one of locations in my comic.
Atomic Video is a location in the town of Cherry Creek from my new YA cosmic horror comic set in 1990's New England. "Cherry Creek Paranormal Club" (formerly Peach Creek Paranormal) follows Paranormal Club Members Louise, Jean, Alejandro, Christine, and Sam as they uncover the dark secrets bubbling up to the surface and threatening to destroy their town, all while navigating their last year of middle school.
Atomic Video is the video store where Alejandro's horror-buff older brother, Francisco, works, and it becomes a frequent meeting spot for the Club outside of school. Francisco, in his infinite movie-trope related wisdom, sometimes acts as an esoteric guide to the weird world of movie monsters and high-concept sci-fi shenanigans that the Club may face on their quest for the truth. He also lets them hang out and play on the arcade cabinets. Don't ask about his break-up with the goth bookseller at Black Cherry Books across the street; it's still pretty fresh.

Indie Bookstore Day 2024!
I can hardly be expected to have shelf control if Indie Bookstore Day and my birthday are within, like, a week of each other, right?? ESPECIALLY not if one of them was doing a Buy 3 Get 1 Free on paperbacks (evidenced by the bottom row), and if ARCHANGELS OF FUNK and TRANSLATION STATE were Birthday Gifts To Myself (pre-ordered in December and everything!)??
Anyway! Great week for books! Good thing we gave up on the moderated book buying ban, huh.
