Ok. I am all for giving Veilgaurd the space to be it's own game and appreciate it for what it is, but every time I see a person who openly talks about only getting in to dragon age this year or some other nonsense go off about how long term fans hate the game cause they cant handle change I see red.
I mean, to be a Dragon Age fan, you have to be able to accept change. Change is at the core of the experience. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing is a different question. But if you're a long-term fan of the series, you've succeeded in the task of accepting change.
The criticisms of Veilgaurd are, in my opinion, a little unique to the franchise. For all Inquisition tweaked certain lore and it irritated a lot of people- it did so with self-awareness and intention. I am thinking about how it did the Dalish dirty in many respects. For all I do not agree with that writing direction, the game itself atleast acknowledges it is 1. New information. 2. Dependent on the clan. 3. Gives you the room to roleplay your character according to previously established lore. This is just one example, of course.
Veilgaurd is unique in the fact it ignores much of the series pre-established lore and in no way owns up to it.
I have seen a lot of hateful comments about how Origins hasn't been the framework of the series since 2009. And yeah, sure to a degree that is true. The gameplay certainly got tossed out. But in many ways, Dragon Age 2 is a direct continuation of that world and setting. DA2 and Origins and the lore they established are solid and share a vision. Play as a Mahariel and engage with Merril's clan. It's the same world. The same npc's. Inquisition does not deviate that far from that vision when you look past the companions all playing devil's advocate.
I really don't think everyone disappointed with this game or finding it lacking are "blinded by nostalgia." Most Dragon Age fans will be the first ones to tell you the franchise is a mess. But acting like the games that established it as beloved to it's fans are no longer relevant is so nasty to me. You as a newer fan would not be able to play Veilgaurd if the older fans had not made the previous titles financial successes. If they had not kept the love for the series alive, this new game would never have made it out of development.
The game is good. It's enjoyable to play. It's not without its charms. It should be given room to shine for what it is. It's a miracle we have it given the development journey it went on.
But it's also a massive smack in the face to many people who loved all three previous titles. And that's a bad thing. And I hope future titles remember the lore and tone of the series better.
These two things can both be true.

"So the Cup party—you know, we with some of the other boys were waiting at Elbo Room for you guys like a bunch of fuckin' plugs! But you go to Chucky's house after—I mean, I know you guys stayed in the locker room for hours, until like 3AM and then you go to Chucky's house. Obviously, there was the amazing stuff on the beach, all around town, Elbo [Room] the next day. That night just being with the boys, being with the families in the locker room, at Chucky's—how special was that?" "Yeah, you know what it was... I think they said—the one day we went back to the rink—I think we had to sign—our owners had to sign every champagne bottle and I think they said there was over 160 champagne bottles? That were—and like obviously not—" "Like empties you mean? Yeah, just like—" "Empties! Like just spraying everywhere! I think you could—like, I had my gear on till about 3:30/4AM. I didn't get home till about 5:30 and guys were still there! You guys probably saw that pic of Carter sleeping on the lawn? Like, I think he might've been one of the last ones there."

and he looked so downright pitiful that someone went up to him and gave him a chair to sit on instead and everything about his dazed smile once he recognises the thing in front of him being a chair speaks enough volumes about how absolutely gone he was

hen winning the buddie betting pool is the easy choice, but bobby winning is the right choice. hr red flags aside, it would allow for a parallel to 2x01. buck could ask, "you okay with this?" "well, i did technically hire him to be your partner. i don't have any doubts you two will be great life partners as well."

The Axolotl is a passive creature that rarely gets involved in mortal lives. It rests and it dreams and it visits other people's dreams, sometimes inspiring them, many times simply watching. It's lived for an unimaginably long time--a length of time that makes a trillion years seem like a blip--and it's completely at peace with the many things it's been and done. Some people worship it like a god, or see it as a representation of everything pure and good. It does not have much to say about these mortal interpretations. It simply is what it is.
When Bill Cipher calls out for help, it's delighted to finally meet him. Bill is the only one it will ever bring back to life. He's the only one it's ever able to, thanks to a certain set of peculiarities of their existence.
Bill Cipher is as active as the Axolotl is passive. He fights and he fights and he fights, and yet he never feels satisfied. He isn't content to watch the world around him in all it's mundane intricacies. He wants to shape every atom to his whims. And the things he can't influence, he burns to the ground.
Meeting the Axolotl is the strangest thing he ever experiences. The Axolotl doesn't speak to him the way it speaks to anyone else. It speaks with a friendly eagerness that borders on over-familiarity. It seems utterly unconcerned about the destructive potential that will be caused by bringing Bill back to life. Not that he's complaining, but he'd be lying if he said it didn't make him uneasy. It's like he's staring at a magic eye poster and missing the picture amidst the noise.
Once Bill is brought back, he picks up right where he left off. He gets so far in his plans, in fact, that he ends the world all over again. But this time, he survives the world being returned back to normal. With no more tricks up his sleeves, his lifelong dream having been achieved and foiled twice now, and having been forced by necessity to forge a couple of connections with others in his powerlessly reborn state, he crumples. And the worst part? At least one of the people he formed a tenuous connection with sees him end the world, and still forgives him for it. This is what *really* breaks him.
But from there, he can rebuild. From there, Bill can put himself back together and figure out who he's capable of being when he allows himself to be loved.
He lives for an incredibly long time. He grows and changes and evolves, and forms more genuine connections with other people than he could have ever imagined. And eventually, he does a lot of good.
And a much longer time after that, after he's gone through enough metamorphoses that he's changed his name a dozen different times over the eons, his boundless energy and curiosity evolves into wanting to curl up like a house cat in a sunbeam and get some long-needed rest. And by the time he reaches this point, he's realized why the Axolotl was so kind to him all those lifetimes ago.
He keeps an eye on a sleepy town in Oregon, long before it ever became Oregon. He inspires the minds that he needs to. And eventually, from his spot curled up outside the fabric of spacetime itself, he watches with great fondness as a little golden triangle tries to take over the world.
And when that triangle reaches out to him for help in one last desperate act, he is absolutely beyond delighted to be able to finally experience that conversation from the other end of it. He had almost forgotten how fiery and fierce he used to be. He'd almost forgotten the way he used to boil with fury and hatred and fear so intense that he could never quite look himself in the eye. Even now, that little triangle trembles when it looks up at him. It doesn't know if its life is at an end yet. It has no idea that it's really just begun.
And although the Axolotl knows it can't tell Bill everything that's in store for him, and what kind of god he becomes, it wants more than anything to take this brief moment of connection across time and space to show him that he is loved.

Poll: What is, on average, the best Danganronpa chapter across the 3 mainline games?
AKA all Danganronpa murders are the same <3.
Parallels among the murders of the same chapter are listed below:
Chapter 1, AKA: "In a murder committed out of fear and panic, after dusk, in a location where the protagonist appeared shortly before, a strongly motivated individual, after taking initiative on their own, is murdered as a result of a betrayal by the protagonist's best ally, after which the corpse of the victim is found slumped on the floor and during the trial for which the blame is for a prolonged time placed on the protagonist or their ally (who was indeed involved, but ultimately is not the blackened)."
Chapter 2, AKA: "In an attempt to maintain allegiance to an important individual and to uphold a sense of honor for their Ultimate title, a capable classmate bludgeons to death the mentally strong yet physically weak (or mentally weak and physically strong) fan favorite (who therefore ends up dying too early) in a hands-on-hands physical confrontation, after which the placement of the corpse as well as the "perceived" crime scene is messed with to pin the blame on another person."
Chapter 3, AKA: "A-not-mentally-well-adjusted individual commits an immaculate and complicated double murder for a unthinkably irrational or amoral cause, which includes a body appearing at the crime scene out of nowhere in a seemingly impossible fashion, and in which one of the victims is the one who was lured out by the killer and willfully takes part in the action (but unknowing that it will result in their own murder) and in which the other victim ends up being the socially ostracized individual, simply because they happen to be at a wrong place at the wrong time."
Chapter 4, AKA: "Within a set-up for a locked room murder mystery, the good-hearted fan favorite becomes a part of a two-person life-and-death allegiance to perform a heroic act of self-sacrificial killing using an unknown murder method with the intention of getting themself killed so that everyone else may live, while one person is revealed to have had a deeper insight into the killing game for some time."
Chapter 5, AKA: "In an unsuccessful attempt to bring the killing game to its conclusion, the most malicious student of the class orchestrates an almost perfect, convoluted and seemingly unnecessarily but indeed intentionally violent murder (which serves as a way of mangling the corpse to a point where the murder method is concealed), whose solving hinges on the protagonist's new but trusted ally's confession about their not-really-consenting involvement."
Chapter 6, AKA: "After a retrospective investigation that brings to light new circumstances about the game's setting as well as its previous events, an existential crisis consumes the remaining survivors as the identity of the class and the killing game itself is revealed, during which Junko Enoshima appears (of course), and which ends with the true protagonist killing the mastermind in order to seek redemption, freedom and hope for their classmates.
P.S. This whole thing was primarily inspired to by my desire to prove Nagito's assumptions from chapter 4 wrong:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of these are fortunatelly not true when we also take V3 into account: while Rantaro was important, he wasn't stabbed; a serial killer was revealed in the third chapter, not the in the second; and I wouldn't exactly classify chapter 4 murder as a suicide in either sdr2 or v3 (though we DID have two people playing Russian roulette in the Funhouse, yikes). All in all, the murders wouldn't have been nearly as shocking if they correlated with what had been already pointed out in the second game before, so I'm not really surprised that there ended up being other similarities among the murders.
That's all, thank you for reading <3

(Image id: a simple comic featuring engineer and pyro from tf2 drawn in mspaint. the first panel shows the pyro looking confused and curious. the second shows the engineer, sitting on the ground and looking at a broken turret with concern and frustration. after that are three small images of pyro, who first looks concerned, then they have an idea with a lightbulb above their head, and then a tiny drawing of them running away with a music note nect to them. the next image shows the engineer standing, looking more frustrated with the turret with the pyro approaching from behind holding something. the last image shows the engineer looking satisfied and pyro looking pleased and holding a box of bandaids, and in front of them is the turret covered in bandaids. end image id]

so. successfully defended my master's. I have some a bunch of revisions to do for my written thesis before I officially have a master's, but I'm very nearly done with it.
I'll be doing research over the summer, but it's not nearly as fast-paced as normal semesters are, and this was a semester in turbo mode. And boy I certainly felt it. I should have a week or so before this semester is officially over, then I'll be able to finish up my thesis and have more time/energy for writing.
I know I've said that updates would be slower than normal this academic year (this semester, especially) and y'all have been very patient with me, so thanks so much. I've still got another draft/revisions to go, but I'm hoping I'll be able to get back to normal Hannah writing mode because I miss averaging 500-1000 words a day lmao
