hiccup and astrid only works for me if they're written as foils. Hiccup is a soft hearted pacifist who has to learn to make tough calls. Astrid is a hard core warrior who has to learn compassion. they both admire the other for their strengths, and by some combination of striving to be more like each other, and hitting the breaks when one of them goes too far in one direction, they manage to meet in the middle and work really well together

Okay okay, hear me out. I know I haven't posted.... BUT I HAVE AN IDEA! Eddsworld and httyd. Mixed both worlds but mostly focused on the eddsworld guys. I feel like this would be fun, adding a bit more stuff too so won't be all like httyd world. Same dragons though (accept if it comes to the nine realms dragons. I'm planning to redesign those there or fit how they act since it has ruined how some dragons acted and all. Speedstingers for example, they don't hesitate and have amazing aim not poor aim. That and the whole venom inconsistency.) I'm still getting the characters figured out but I wanted to share about the idea! Am gonna change my username to fit it as I blame to focus on this. I love dragons and I love how wacky the four goobers in eddsworld are. But I also plan to have a storyline too. It also will be an ask blog or if people have ideas it would be wonderful to hear. Now I don't plan to have the time era like mine realms, mostly cause my disdain for nine realms I have plans though I promise that. I plan to share designs as I go so the community has say on some things, as during my time in fandoms there are good ideas the community can make. Yes not all ideas are good, but not all the time. Even bad ideas could have something in it to make something better. So if y'all have ideas I'd enjoy to hear!

Previous Chapter | Masterlist | Series Masterlist
Rating: M for Mature (18 + no minors allowed)
Word Count: 3.5K
Warning: All warnings on the Series Masterlist, will update if necessary (Re-iterating, no minors allowed! Thank you)
Chapter Summary: Every morning, at dawn, for the past fortnight you meet Aemond Targaryen. Will today change things for the better between you two?
Notes: Hello everyone!!! I am writing earlier because I had this scene in my head that I could not fit into a regular plot-driven chapter because it was so long. So instead I turned it into a little interlude between chapters 4 and 5. It focuses on our favourite couple and if you have a thing for the whole regency "OMG THEY GRAZE EACH OTHER!" You will like that one. Its a bit angsty but with loads of fluff at the end. Hope you like it and like always LMK what you all think!
Thank you again to all of you who take the time to comment, like and reblog, you are all so kind and I love you all so much!!! 💜💚💜
See you in the next one xxx

At Dawn
In Starfall, you had been a ghost, haunting its ancient halls. You cherished the late hours, those quiet moments under the cover of darkness where the sky was a canvas of stars. To you, each star was not just a celestial spark but a guardian soul, a sentinel silently watching over the world from the heavens – you imagined they were looking after you when you needed them the most. This nightly ritual, however, came at a cost — mornings often found you rising late, the consequence of surrendering to the tranquil embrace of moonlit solitude.
In King's Landing, the luxuries of being a ghost were behind you. Now, well before the first golden rays of sunlight peeked over the horizon, with the dawn barely painting the sky in hues of timid pink and soft orange, Prince Aemond would be at your door ready to eat his morning meal in your company.
Yawning, you gathered your hair, weaving it into a simple yet elegant half-up, half-down style. It framed your face in a way you found particularly becoming. But these early hours beckoned for self-sufficiency as you didn’t wish to disturb your handmaiden at such a time. Thus, you had grown accustomed to readying yourself alone in the quiet of dawn, opting for dresses that required no assistance to don. Today, you chose one of your favorites, a dress perhaps a tad too short by King’s Landing standards, ending mid-calf. Its design was a mixture of airy fabrics and light silks that embraced your form in a flattering caress, and its deep blue hue complemented your complexion beautifully.
Gently, you pressed your fingers to your cheeks, coaxing a rosy flush to the surface. Despite the early hour, it was important to you to look and feel your best. Right on schedule, the familiar, soft knocking at the door signaled his arrival, accompanied by a gentle, "My lady," floating through the wood. A smile spread across your face at the sound. Each dawn spent with Aemond only deepened your desire to spend more time in his company. To learn all you could about this dragonrider, this will-be husband.
You gave yourself a final glance in the mirror before sauntering towards the door. With a playful lilt in your voice, you called out, "And who might be serenading my door at this ungodly hour?"
From the other side came Aemond's mock-serious reply, "My lady, should there be another suitor at your door at this time, I fear I must step in to defend my betrothed honor. A fight to the death perhaps?"
Your laughter rang out, rich and unrestrained, as you swung the door open. Leaning casually against the frame, hand perched on your hip, you greeted him teasingly, "Ah, what a sight – A fierce dragon graces my doorstep."
Aemond rolled his eye, the man teetering between amusement and exasperation, before offering a polite bow of his head. Over his shoulder, you caught sight of Perros, his expression a perfect study in stoic disapproval. Ever since these dawn meetings with Aemond had become a routine, Perros had appointed himself your unofficial chaperone. Chaperoning had never been a tested custom of Dornish culture, but due to his protective nature, Perros had still not warmed up one bit to the idea of the betrothal, even after a fortnight under the Targaryen royal roof and he was looking for anything to hold against Aemond.
You stepped aside, allowing room for Aemond and Perros to enter. Perros, ever the vigilant guardian, promptly made his way to his usual spot in the corner. There, he brooded, his gaze sharp and watchful, tracking every interaction between you and Aemond with hawk-like intensity.
You recalled a morning some days ago when Aemond, in a rare moment of clumsiness, had spilled some jam on your sleeve. His instinctive move to dab it away had provoked an instantaneous reaction from Perros, who leapt to his feet, his voice laced with protective fervor as he reprimanded you both for the supposedly improper contact. The moment had ended with you and Aemond awkwardly distancing yourselves, while Perros took up a stern post at your table on the small balcony, arms crossed in silent disapproval. Aemond had sported a look of utter vexation, his face tinged with a hint of pink, huffing, while you couldn't help but shoot a glare at Perros for his overzealous protectiveness.
You led Aemond to the quaint table on the balcony, its surface crowded with an assortment of dishes. Your taste buds, having grown accustomed to the vibrant spices and flavors of Dorne, found the typical Westerosi cuisine rather uninspiring. Consequently, you had developed a preference for simpler fare – delicate cakes accompanied by soft Vale cheese and a sweet red-berry jam from the Reach, as you could not stomach anything else. If you were to live here, you would need to have a cook brought from Sunspear, you thought.
As you both settled into your seats, a serene quietude enveloped the balcony. The early morning light cast a soft glow on Aemond, accentuating his regal features and rendering him even more striking than usual. You caught yourself momentarily captivated by his appearance and quickly composed yourself. It wouldn't do to let on just how much your betrothed affected you.
"I trust you had a restful night, Prince Aemond?" you inquired softly, putting some berries on your plate.
"Fairly restful," Aemond replied, spreading cheese over a slice of bread. "However, I was somewhat vexed last night. I had intended to read 'The History of Dragon Anatomy' from the library, only to find it had already been taken out. The Maester there mentioned a young lady had taken it just after dinner. Curious, since I had expressed my interest in that very book earlier in the day, to that same lady."
You glanced at him coyly. "How frustrating for you. Perhaps this lady simply wished to delve into subjects that intrigue you, my prince."
Aemond let out a thoughtful hum, carefully layering jam on another slice of bread before placing it on your plate. "And..." he prompted.
"And what, my prince?" you asked, feigning innocence.
"Did you find the book to your liking?" Aemond's tone was casual, but his eye held a playful glint as he took a bite of his cheesy bread.
Your gaze lingered on Aemond as he swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing quite attractively. The sight inexplicably left your own throat feeling parched.
"The book was quite fascinating," you commented, "Particularly the chapter on dragon scales and their resistance to various metals. In Dorne, we don't have many resources on dragons, so it was a nice change of literature."
Aemond let out a soft scoff. "I imagine not. It would not be wise to provide our enemies with knowledge about how to defeat our dragons. Some would probably say it would be insanity"
Your eyebrows drew together in a frown. "Enemies?"
Aemond paused, meeting your gaze with a hint of uncertainty. "Old enemies, perhaps. You must understand the strategic folly in sharing dragon lore with those who have historically sought to bring them down. Our betrothal itself hinges on the long-standing enmity between Dorne and Targaryen’s dragons."
You bristled at his words. "Perhaps if dragons were not made to attack and lay claim to our lands, the sentiment towards them in Dorne would be different!"
Aemond's eye narrowed, a defensive edge creeping into his voice. "House Targaryen united Westeros by right of conquest. We are neither thieves nor invaders."
"Right of conquest?" you echoed incredulously. "Dorne was never conquered. Your ancestors never succeeded in bringing Dorne under their rule!"
Breakfast now lay neglected as you both locked gazes, each unwilling to yield, to be the first to lower the proverbial banner.
Aemond broke the silence with a measured tone, "Well, here you are now, in King's Landing. So, perhaps the past should remain just that."
Your response was edged with a hint of bitterness. "There's no need to remind me of my place here, Prince Aemond. Your views on my people, and by extension on me, seem quite clear. It must be such a burden to align your esteemed dragon lineage with mine.”
Aemond's eye flickered slightly, a shadow of discomfort crossing his face. "You exaggerate, my lady. I did not imply any such thing."
"Of course, my apologies," you replied, the sharpness in your voice unmistakable. Gathering his plate, you stacked it atop yours, a clear signal of the meal's end. "I trust your breakfast was satisfactory, Prince Aemond. However, I need to prepare for the day. I promised your sister I would meet with her."
Aemond seemed momentarily taken aback, his composed facade faltering. "But we've only just begun, and you've yet to enjoy your favorite jam. Why leave so abruptly?"
"I wouldn't want to impose any longer," you said, your tone firm yet polite. "It might be best for you to leave now Prince Aemond."
A thick silence enveloped the room, heavy with unvoiced sentiments. Prince Aemond, his jaw set in a firm line, rose abruptly from his seat. His movements were rigid, each step resonating with barely restrained anger as he made his way to the door. Upon reaching the threshold, he paused, turning to face you with a stiff, formal inclination of his head. "My lady," he uttered, his voice a strained whisper of formality. Then, with a swift motion, he opened the door and exited, the slam echoing with a finality that reverberated through the room. The resounding closure seemed loud enough to stir the entire wing, making you flinch.
Seated alone at the table, you gazed out towards the horizon, where the sun had begun to cast a golden glow over the morning sky. A heavy sigh escaped your lips as you leaned forward, resting your head on your crossed arms atop the table. A soft groan of frustration echoed the turmoil within.
Had you overreacted? Aemond's words about Dorne's historical enmity with the Targaryens weren't unfounded, but his tone, dismissive and tinged with superiority, had struck a nerve. Your Dornish pride, a deep-rooted part of your identity, felt belittled in his presence. It was as if he had trampled upon the history and struggles of your people, reducing them to mere irritants in the grand Targaryen narrative.
Perhaps your reaction had been too impulsive, or maybe your expectations of Aemond were too lofty. The romantic notions you’d harbored, fueled by the tales and books you’d devored in Starfall, seemed naive now in the harsh light of the morning. Yet, Aemond’s daily visits, those moments that had started to become a cherished routine, suggested that maybe there was something more. Had you misconstrued his intentions, read too much into what was merely a princely obligation? The very thought of it twisted in your chest. You were confused and could feel a strange feeling of longing coiling deep within your stomach.
"My lady?" The concern in Perros's voice pulled you from your introspective reverie.
"Mmm?" you hummed, your voice muffled against your arms, still not lifting your head.
"Are you well, my lady?" He inquired gently, worry edging in his tone.
"You must be feeling vindicated," you said, lifting your head to meet Perros's gaze, your laughter tinged with a hint of bitterness. "It seems Prince Aemond has made his views about me quite clear."
Perros regarded you with a steady, thoughtful look. "I've never been fond of him, true. He's too princely, too arrogant. He's not worthy of you," he admitted, and you couldn't help but let out a small, teary chuckle.
"I guess now is the perfect time for your 'I told you so,'" you remarked wryly.
"But," Perros cut in, his tone shifting, "I can't ignore how he looks at you. From the very first day we arrived, he's been drawn to you like a moth to a flame. It's like you're the Maiden reborn in his eyes. And..” Perros took a breath for effect, "I suppose I might have judge the prince too harshly too... I was not to tell you, but Prince Aemond has been joining Davos and me during our training sessions in the yard.”
"He has?" You exclaimed, turning to face Perros - The image of Aemond, a prince of the realm, spending his time with little davos was a stark contrast to the man you had argued with only moments ago.
"Yes," Perros nodded. "He's been taking time to teach Davos the basics of swordplay. You should see the boy's face light up. The prince has a way with him, showing patience I didn't think possible. It's as if he sees something of himself in Davos. The lad's been boasting about it to anyone who'll listen, his chest puffed up with pride. Keep saying it’ll go to his head, but the lad is excited, the prince even said he’d show him that great beast of his. "
A thoughtful frown creased your forehead. "But why keep it a secret? Why didn't Aemond mention it? Why didn't Davos?"
Perros shrugged slightly, a faint smile touching his lips. "I suspect the prince isn't doing it for praise or recognition. Maybe he just wanted to help, to do something good without any fanfare. It's not something I expected from him, but with all my years, I’ve learned that people, even princes, can stil surprise us."
As you pondered his words, Perros placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder, his touch grounding. "Speak with him, my lady," Perros advised gently, his voice carrying a wisdom born of years. "Whether he's a princely dragon or not, it's always better to clear the air, especially with matters of the heart.”
You offered a small, contemplative smile. "Perhaps you're right, Perros. I might just do that."
Just then, a series of knocks echoed at the door, you released a weary sigh, wondering aloud, "Do you think that the noise might have woken up mother?"
Perros straightened, ready to take action. "Shall I see who it is, my lady?"
"No, no, it's alright," you quickly responded, waving a hand dismissively. "It's probably mother, or Gerris and Davos. They have this habit of barging into my room to start their day. They find it amusing, I suppose."
But as you opened the door, it was neither your mother, nor Gerris, nor Davos – Standing before you was Aemond. His usually neatly styled hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had been anxiously running his fingers through it, and his solitary eye, usually so sharp and focused, now held a wild, almost frantic quality as he gazed at you
Finally breaking the silence, you found your voice ; “Prince Aemond?”
You were momentarily caught off guard as Aemond pulled you into his arms, his embrace firm yet cautious, tentative as though he was handling something precious and fragile. His body, usually so rigid and imposing, now enveloped you with a breath-stealing, protective warmth, contrasting sharply with the slightness of your own form.
His face buried in your hair, Aemond seemed to be seeking a sort of solace, his breath slow and deep. You could feel the slight quiver in his chest and for a moment, you stood there, unsure, your body rigid in his embrace. But as he inhaled, as if drawing strength from your presence, you felt a surge of want wash over you.
Tentatively, your arms wound around his back, your touch light, almost hesitant. The contours of his body under your fingers felt like the unyielding walls of a fortress, yet there was a tenderness in his hold that belied his outward appearance. The sensation of his breath warming the nape of your neck sent a shiver down your spine, and his voice, thick with emotion, resonated against your soft skin. "I am sorry for my words, my lady. They were careless and unkind," he murmured, his tone laced with a rare vulnerability. "Please, I am sorry. I ask for your forgiveness, but more than that, I beg you, do not shut me out. Not when I feel like I have only begun to know you."
His grip tightened ever so slightly, as if fearing you might slip away, his voice a soft whisper against your hair. "You have every right to turn away from me, yet I find myself selfishly hoping you will not. In you, I've seen a kindness, a strength that I have longed for. Please, my lady, grant me the chance to prove that I am more than my harsh words and hasty judgments."
Nestling closer into his hold, you felt a wave of understanding wash over you. "Perhaps I, too, was quick to judge," you admitted softly. "Your words, though harsh, weren't entirely unfounded. Our kingdoms have been locked in conflict for so long, and both have suffered greatly. It's just that..." You paused, taking a deep breath, grappling with the words that lay heavy on your heart. "I understand the reasons for our union – duty, family, the realm, the crown. But still..." Your voice trailed off, laden with unspoken hopes and fears.
Aemond gently lifted his head from yours, their foreheads meeting in a tender, earnest touch. For the first time since your encounter, you were close, close enough to see the subtle hues in his remaining eye, close enough to feel the warmth of his breath mingling with yours. "I too wish for more, my lady, more than you could possibly imagine," he confessed, his voice a soft echo of your own longing.
A timid smile touched your lips, a flicker of the young woman who once dreamt under the stars, the girl who laughed freely. "Back in Starfall, they used to say I was like a ghost. After Gerris was announced as the future lord, I lost a part of myself. I never thought I'd find that girl again – the one who could marvel at the stars, who loved to read and laugh without care." Your smile grew, a hint of old joy resurfacing. "But with you, Aemond... when I'm with you, I feel as if... as if I'm finding her again."
Aemond's smile, a rare and genuine thing, mirrored your own. "And I," he confessed, "feel something I feared was long lost in me too."
Perros's conspicuous throat-clearing echoed in the room, startling both of you into stepping apart, faces flushed with the sudden intensity of the moment. You shot Perros a glare, one that he met with a raised eyebrow and a look that managed to be both unimpressed and protective.
Aemond, regaining his composure with a soft cough, glanced toward the door. "I must take my leave, my lady. Ser Criston awaits me in the training yard, and I dare not keep my sister from you company as she probably awaits you for her early morning beetle hunt," he said.
Your smile returned, a gentle curve of lips that hinted at the warmth you felt inside. "Of course, my prince. Dawn tomorrow then?"
Aemond hesitated, an unusual shyness in his demeanor as he paused at the door. "Actually, I was wondering if I might join you in the afternoon? You spend time with your brother and Davos then, right?"
"Oh, you needn't trouble yourself. Heleana usually takes the twins along, and we all enjoy the gardens together," you explained.
He hummed thoughtfully. "Nevertheless, I would like to be there. To spend time with those you care about."
A genuine smile graced your face. "Then after midday it is."
As Aemond began to exit, he paused once more, turning slightly toward you. "And perhaps after dinner, I could meet you in the library? I could show you more books about dragons. I read them all as a child."
Your smile deepened, warmth spreading through you at the thought. "I would be delighted to receive literary recommendations from the realm's most renowned dragon rider."
Aemond's response was a shy smile, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. He nodded silently, a gesture that spoke volumes of his growing affection, before finally stepping out of the room.
Left in the quiet room, you felt an unfamiliar sensation, a fluttering lightness in your chest, like a bird cautiously testing its wings after a long confinemen. With a dreamy smile lingered on your lips, you turned to face Perros, who stood near the small table, you caught the hint of a teasing smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. His eyes held a mix of amusement and something softer that you had trouble deciphering, perhaps a reluctant acceptance of the scene he had just witnessed.
With a mock groan, you raised your hand, preempting any comments he might have. "Do not say anything, Perros."
His smile broadened, but he raised his hands in mock surrender. "I wouldn't dream of it, my lady," he replied teasingly.
Shaking your head with a mix of exasperation and fondness, you moved past Perros towards the door. "I have a busy day ahead," you remarked, "And it seems I now have plans for after dinner as well."

You caught someone in the eye, you were sure. At least somewhere under the brow. You hoped he went blind.
Your eyelids fluttered as you struggled to stay awake, back in the hull, crusted blood marking a worn trail down your forehead.
You had your knife, still, which you clutched close to your middle at all times. You were sure they could wrench it from your hands if they really wanted.
Maybe it was the pity which kept them from taking it from you, or the fact that they remembered how difficult it was to get you here in the first place, lashing out like an animal, kicking and clawing as they threw you back into the cage.
Maybe it was because they had scant time nor regard for anything else but their eager need to nurse their own wounds.
It meant very little, trapped back in the hull as you were.
You lived that moment over and over in your mind.
How you carried the burden of guilt on your shoulders, you wanted to beg and plead like you were kneeled before the altar of a broken God. You were ready to repent, and in that moment the smoke smelt like nothing more than forgiveness.
How at that time, you weren’t the one holding the knife. This time you were the beast at the sharp end of a masked figure’s staff. You were the one who begged and pleaded and writhed. How even before the mask figure could move, you knew the answer they would give, just as you knew the way flesh felt under knife.
Even the Vikings on Berk held honor, none willing to take a slave, none willing to turn an unwillful hand, none dishonorable enough to slay a man, none cowardly enough not to own up to it.
As a soft soul, you’d vowed albeit unconsciously to never draw a lick of blood.
You stared at the slowly shifting body of a small terror, chained and beaten and scarred so bad it could barely move, laid still and sad in its own waste.
It had driven you mad, constant whining and hacking filling the hours you should have spent sleeping with strife and restless shifting. Your neck ached from the hard floor even now, and you’d not a moment of respite to show for it.
You weren’t the dragon with the large yellow eyes. You weren’t the trapper, fallen to the knife.
You hated it; just as it was bound, so were you. You seemed to reflect each other, two sides of the same coin, neither the wielder, both the bearers of the sharp end of the knife, slaves to a much crueler fate.
It was a mockery.
And as a child, you’d kept a bird, wings torn and chest kicked in, picked up from the road and stowed away in a wooden box filled with hay. You had been too young to recognize that it had been long gone and so you took to it with the passion of a child bound to be disappointed.
You watched it all night, by the fire as its chest rose and fell gently, alone.
You fell asleep to an empty hearth and woke to a cold, still body.
When your friend, when a small Hiccup had come to you with his own bird, showed it to you, cradled and swaddled with all the fine cloth the son of a Chief could afford, when he had found success where you did not and whose hands healed when yours couldn’t.
You listened to his stories, you watched with a bitten tongue and a held breath as he cared for it, wrought with a sympathy and a grief you’d never voice. You hadn’t anything but sadness, then, and, in a way, a measure of happiness. You were happy for his success.
You had wondered for so many nights what you had done wrong.
You thought that made him greater.
You imagined it dead, run over by the wheel of a wagon, perhaps begging for scraps yet only facing the hard hearts and shoulders of Vikings who had better things to do than entertain the whims of a small bird, unfamiliar to the cold world, the only life it had known being wrapped warm as a fire and soft as fur.
Lost to the cruel grip of nature.
You glared at the man before you.
You wanted to tell him to shovel his eyes out, to cut open his chest, to suffocate on his own spit and blood. You held your tongue.
Was there something cruel in that, too; leaving something so weak and frail to live when it begged for nothing but reprieve? To leave it alive, choking on its own spit and filth, driving you mad with anguish and irritation and then rage, until you had wanted nothing more than to have seen it tossed overboard?
Was that what everyone else knew when they looked at you with those eyes and blocked you off with sturdy shoulders, filled with unease and love and companionship, laid just outside your reach?
Eret grit his jaw.
You blinked away the heavy weights of sleep which held down your eyes as you slept, and though you had the urge, you did not rub your lids.
Instead, you laid still, turned away from the entrance. The light.
It smelt terribly.
As the hold once again filled with dragons, they kept to the far side of their cages, away from the small terror- the lizard, that was slowly but surely beginning to rot, torn apart by the desperate, fearful midnight scrabblings of a rat. Starving, just as you were, but freer than anything above or below deck.
By the sound of it, you knew exactly who. Eret wasn’t your only visitor. No, you got others. This one, he sounded like one of the kinder ones, the one who brought you your meals. Who kept you from starving. The others, they visited with nothing but sharp, metal-toed boots and fists burning with all the rage of a man trapped, ready and willing to rip and tear.
You were under no illusion that he had done it of his own free will, and yet he carried a sort of hope during the exchanges you shared, the passing of food between the bars and into your small jail, waiting as you turned your back, sighing with heavy emotion and moving with heavy steps.
You kept your breathing slow and shallow, rocking with the rest of the boat, rain and water pounding against wood as the ship was tossed around. It would soon get too violent for you to stay still, violent enough to make you sick.
He probably had a family back home. A wife and a child. Or a brother, maybe; a family, something to hold him in the delusion that what he was doing was right. That motivated him to try and rise above the others, that allowed him the belief he had the right to turn the other cheek as both dragons and Vikings alike were beaten and bruised and tortured by his hand. That he wasn’t nor would ever be as bad as the rest of them which, in your eyes, ultimately made him worse.
It made him selfish, more than anyone else on this vessel, who took and beat and robbed as they pleased.
He had a very unique helmet when most of the others on this ship did not; something that covered most of his face the same way Dagur’s helmet did, with horny curly enough to match any Jorgenson.
“It’s not like you have a due date, do you?” You coughed viciously, teeth violently catching on the tip of your tongue, causing you to wince.
“How we operate is no business of yours,” Eret grit his jaw, arms crossed, legs crossed. A line of sweat ran down the side of his face.
“You won’t be able to keep this expedition going forever,” You mumbled, voice raspier than ever before, “You need my help.”
“Tell me what you know.”
You laughed at him mockingly, though your stomach sank.
Would you succumb just as it had, or would you rise above it?
Maybe it was boredom, maybe it was desperation. Maybe you were tired of listening to the crew members above deck, maybe you had a death wish.
You gave in.
You started small.
“Rub it under the chin,” You looked up at him, a sharp, tense grimace on your face, “The spot where the jawbone turns to soft meat, scratch it with your fingernails.”
“You didn’t come up with that,” Eret glared.
“No, I didn’t,” You rasped. The rough uncured leather hide of your muzzle dug into your jaw, the flesh there searing and surely wet with puss after you’d made a very passionate effort to bite one of the crewmates in another escape attempt.
You didn’t need to say anything fancy; it didn’t take much convincing. It wouldn’t.
It made it very difficult to speak, keeping your jaw nearly stuck in place, “But I know it, and that makes me better than you. Just try it.”
You dared him with your eyes, both embodying the hypnotic gaze of a snake, and speaking the vying notes of a charmer.
You taunted, “You’re not still behind, are you?”
“We’ve gotten... Farther, with your help,” Eret conceded.
Behind him, a green thunderdrum struggled, mouth bolted shut with a muzzle made of leather and metal not unlike your own, a set of chains binding its wings in the upwards position.
There were three men on its back and two more on each size, wrestling it down as it struggled, trying and failing to scream.
They had no trouble, with all the room they needed to swarm the beast and pin it down, your small hull and a large pull-down metal door opened to reveal another, larger chamber.
“Is it enough?”
“It has to be.”
“Are you willing to take that risk?” You learned to live with it; the stuffiness, the rattling, the pain, and as the nights grew colder and as the hold filled with the scraping and screaming of beasts, you slept sounder.
Eret was silent.
“There's grass,” You started, picking at your fingernails, short and bloody, with your knife, “It grows plentifully deep in the islands on the southern end of the archipelago. It should be around here, wherever we are, too.”
“The dragons like it?” Eret asked stiffly.
Like picking bits and pieces off a corpse, like a scavenger picking over carrion, you took old phrases and sullied comforts and wove them together to make a convincing argument. You tempted and you beckoned.
Hiccup would say it was all about trust. You said the same, once upon a time. But you knew better now.
“Well enough to bow,” You smiled.
“Unshackle me.”
“What if I chained you up and dropped you in with the beasts?” Eret shot back, “Everything you have, I fought for. You’re still alive by my good graces and mine only.”
You were the smaller animal, but the frustration, the raw injustice drove you mad. Once again, you wanted to gouge his eyes out, you wanted to fight and struggle and scream, but you held off.
You hesitated, and looked away, a tenuous expression kept neural only through sheer force of will, the broiling in your gut and the foul words resting on your tongue making you want to do nothing but spit fire.
He would regret that.
“A Whispering Death,” You croaked, trying to suppress the vicious wrinkle of your nose, “Pull it’s top spine, press just under the point, really dig your fingers in.”
“Where are we now?” You asked.
“Someone is dead,” Eret ground out, fists shaking, “A man is dead because of you.”
He threw something on the floor, which clattered loudly in front of your dim cage.
You recognized it. A helmet.
“And?” You let out a short laugh.
“And? And?!”
“Let me out.”
“You don’t deserve that,” He spat.
“Don’t I?”  The irony was not lost on you. And so you laughed again, but much louder this time, with force enough to clutch at your stomach, to pull taut the your loosening muzzle.
You felt at your wrists, newly freed, and shook out your legs, donning a new pair of boots. Your clothing was still torn, ragged, stained, though you were certain you would be able to fix that soon.
You wore a helmet, weighty but fitting on your head, long and covering, secure, with large curly horns. It was patched and in parts covered in blood, thick and dried and congealing where there were dents.
You knew now that what you once called kindness had just been a veil, a sweet lie to cover what everyone else already knew.
You were a cruel, evil person.
A liar, to hold things with delicate hands and whisper hopeful words when there was only one result, to follow teachings and old sayings that would never work for you again.
And the sweetest lie was the one you told yourself; the one that kept you from the truth and told you that you weren’t.
There was no forgiveness here. Not for you.
Only condemnation.
You stretched your mouth open wide, worked your jaw where your muzzle had left a heavy mark, ignoring the desperate scrabbling and screeching of a dragon and the men behind you pulling, dragging it with fist and chain across splintered wood into a new cage.
You breathed in the fresh sea air, taking in the light of day for the first time in a long while.
And you reveled in it.

BEHOLD, MY HTTYD OPINIONS. if you scroll even further you get to also read my random thoughts about The Hidden World movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My fun little thoughts about the Hidden World movie:
Generally speaking, courtship behaviors are largely instinctual in most animals. So maybe part of the reason Toothless was so confused about how to court the Lightfury because she wasn’t another Nightfury.
The first time I watched HTTYD 3 I was very much under the impression that the Lightfury had been in captive for a pretty decent amount of time. When the Lightfury is brought to Grimmel the general dudes even say “We brought your favorite bait” which implies that Grimmel has used Lightfuries to lure Nightfuries before. Which then led me to the assumption that Grimmel had been using this specific Lightfury for a least a few years.
This also explained to me why the Lightfury kept coming back to find Toothless instead of going back to the Hidden World. She’s been with Grimmel so long she didn’t know what else to do, or alternatively she didn’t want to lead Grimmel to the Hidden World. It also explained why she was almost luring Toothless into Grimmel’s initial trap.
The one thing I never really got was how they ever got a Lightfury. I’ve been under the assumption they’re entirely endemic to the Hidden World, and there wouldn’t be any real reason for them to leave.
Would Toothless be miserable in the Hidden World? He’s built for lots of flying and his main form of attack and presumably hunting is diving from up high. You really can’t do that in a cave, even if the Hidden World is big.
WHAT ABOUT THE FUCKING TIMBERJACKS MAN? WHAT ABOUT FLIGHTLESS DRAGONS LIKE SPEEDSTINGERS??? THE CANNIBAL DRAGONS?!?
Also I know Toothless has the Berk dragons go to the Hidden World but what about literally all the other dragons?
I NEED ANSWERS
After this I’m gonna redesign the Nightlights with my head canon stuff in mind. And maybe Thunder. I haven’t watched the Nine Realms but I’ve seen pictures of Thunder and HOLY SHIT HES UGLY IM SORRY THUNDER BUT YOU GOT DONE DIRTY
Also I definitely want feedback and opinions on this if you feel like sharing :)

I have my problems with the hidden world, like many others. And i just want to gather all my thoughts in one place here because i feel like many agree that the ending itself isnt the problem, but how they did it. For me, personally, they ruined it with the reactions to the dragons leaving. Specifically, the reactions of the dragons.
First, we have Meatlug, who in the past has been shown thay merely HEARING FISHLEGS' VOICE causes her to become overwhelmed with excitement. (RTTE S2E9)
And yet here, she looks like this:
Tumblr media
Like?? Not even a frown when she's leaving Fishlegs, who is clearly her favourite person in the world (literally watch ANY HTTYD media and this is made abundantly clear).
Moving on, we have Barf and Belch. Now it can be said that the twins and their dragon don't really have as many emotional dragon-rider moments as the others, but it is still clear that Barf and Belch love their riders. Except here:
Tumblr media
The twins look DEVASTATED, meanwhile they (sorry belch is cropped here I couldnt get a ss with both in it) hardly look sad. Barf at least looks a little upset but still, its borderline.
And moving on, to perhaps what angers me the most, Snotlout & Hookfang. These two are easily my fav dragon-rider duo/team, and for many reasons.
Very quickly, allow me to take you back to RTTE S1E13, in which Hookfang goes out of his way to protect "Girl-Hookfang" and her eggs from a Titanwing Monsterous Nightmare when she sends out what Hiccup describes as a "distress signal".
When Snotlout tells Hookfang to choose between him and the dragon, he ultimately chooses defending her. But at the prospect of leaving Snotlout, he looks LIKE THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He looked MISERABLE and even made sad little dragon noises (idk how to describe them im sorry). So,
TELL ME WHY
IN THE HIDDEN WORLD
HE LOOKS LIKE THIS
Tumblr media
SNOTLOUT LOOKS LIKE HES LISTENED TO AN ENTIRE MITSKI ALBUM, BROS FUCKING SOBBING SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP.
And Hookfang hardly even looks at him, just kinda gives him a sideways glance. Like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HELLO???! And ONE OF THESE had a lower budget as a TV show AND a lower quality model (which, unrelated, ive seen some people really dislike but I think the show models are great!)
The only one to act somewhat appropriately is Toothless, who warbles and makes his little dragon noises at Hiccup, almost talking with him, they have their big heartfelt moment and their cute hug before he leaves. Because of course they get it, its Hiccup and Toothless.
And yeah i get it that clearly the dragons are sick and tired of hunters and therefore understand the need to leave. But they dont even look sad! Breaks my heart because after three movies, two tv shows and all the specials of the dragons and riders bonding and caring for each other and they don't even get a heartfelt goodbye.
And let us not forget that Snotlout, Fishlegs and the twins, who have been riders since the FIRST MOVIE, and main characters in their own right for years, don't even get a GOODBYE LINE?? LIKE LITERALLY, Astrid and Valka? Absolutely, they deserve it. Gobber? Sure, he hasn't known grump nearly as long but he's been a relevant and important main character as long as the kids. And Eret-
Now, I love Eret. He's cool. He's great. Love a hunter turned rider.
But WHY DID THEY GIVE A LINE TO HIM AND SKULLCRUSHER (approx. 1 year relationship) OVER THE SIX YEARS OF FISHLEGS, RUFF, TUFF AND SNOTLOUT? THEY DONT EVEN GET A "Goodbye." WHAT.
And again thats not me shitting on Eret getting one, its on the others NOT
And this isnt even beginning to mention Valka and Cloudjumper do not START ME on their TWENTY YEAR FRIENDSHIP AND BOND BEING TORN APART IN A ONE MINUTE GOODBYE.
Anyways on a lighter note, the parallel with Hiccup removing his hand from Toothless in a reverse of the first time they touched all those years ago always gets me emotional. My fav part about the ending.
And that's pretty much all I like about it LMAOO

httyd ceremonial music and war chants
ok so one thing i absolutely need to have in one of my httyd fics (the thw rewrite with a time jump - working title is wings of war) - is a scene with communal dancing, chanting, and singing
theres going to be a gathering of the archipelago's leaders at berk (i might call it a "thing" even though its not quite historically accurate...but its httyd lets be real here, nothings historical)
anyway at the gathering/thing, each group will contribute some kind of performance or ceremony in a show of support/celebration and I cant get the image out of my mind of the berserkers essentially performing a heilung song (specifically asja)
i imagine that the berserkers (and probably a lot of others in the archipelago) have incorporated dragons into their ceremonial music, which will only make it cooler and definitely more intimidating in the case of war chants
the scene would take place at night. all the groups that have come to berk are gathered before the great hall and fires have been lit all around. theyre gathered in a semi circle, with performing groups taking their spot in the centre so everyone can see them.
im imagining dagur (shirtless even though its cold, with his face, chest, and arms painted) walking back and forth in front of the ranks of the berserkers who've come with him as part of his entourage for the ceremonies. he's leading the chant, riling them up, pounding on his chest or maybe using a spear to keep time by driving its blunt end into the ground over an over. he's super into it, like sweating, chest heaving with the deep breaths at every pause. sometime he's bending forwards or titling back from the force it takes to lead the chant with consistent volume and expression. he looks a little terrifying.
and then partway through the chant, heather emerges from the middle of the performers - she also has her face painted and shes in an elaborate ceremonial dress - and she starts singing in this haunting but beautiful voice
and its just fucking transcendent, man
hiccup and astrid are watching, absolutely mesmerized
also here's asja for reference. it's about wishing for prosperity and love, which is fitting considering the events that are taking place as the ceremonies are happening
youtube
also i think hakkerskaldyr would be another great one either for the beserkers or several of the tribes gathered together to sing before a battle, either the night before or as theyre on the battlefield. this song makes me feel such a strong sense of anticipation and...is it just me or is the song hot? like this is a sexy song.
imagine dagur chanting hakkerskaldyr while holding some sort of huge weapon, glaring down people he's about to bludgeon to death
hot

Yeah my opinion on HW is very.. two sided. On the one hand YOU DONT BREAK UP A FOUND FAMILY HICCUP LOOKED AT TOOTHLESS AND SAW HIMSELF AND TOOTHLESS CHOSE TO FLY WITH HICCUP OR NOT AT ALL IM SHAKING YOU CLAWING AT THE WALLS CHEWING ON THE FURNITURE. On the other hand I watched a video that like,, kinda justified HW?? or like explained it at the very least as like staying together puts the dragons and vikings in continuous danger that theyd need to separate from each other to avoid 1/2 RAGE anon
[[Like there will always be Dragons and Hunters and HW Villain Whatshisface and there could thoretically always be Hiccups but how long would the cycle repeat until dragons are all dead or all safe?? like keeping the dragons on Berk isnt best for the dragons or the vikings and i get that!! but on the other hand arguing this would disregard all the implications of Found Family and dragons being more than just animals and HTTYD's Never Give Up On What You Believe message. 2/2 Rage anon
Surprise RAGE anon 3/2 BUT ALSO Ruff going from Badass Wonder Girl in RTTE to Lets Annoy This Man Into Letting Me Go (Great Idea!!) and Then LEAD HIM TO THE THINGS HE WANTS TO KILL (Bad Idea!!) was... uugh you were doing so well rtte came out before hw why didnt they add in her character development dreamworks whyyy. And dont even get me started on Tuff just suddenly not even caring about Ruff at all NOT IN MY FOUND AND IN THIS CASE BIRTH FAMILY BITCH]]
Honestly I never really agreed with that;; The big argument about HTTYD 3's ending is the whole "Well, all the dragons leaving is how the book ended" deal but like. It doesn't have to follow the book to the letter. It HASN'T been doing that, do you know how vastly different the film franchise is from the book series? If the first movie had started with "There were dragons when I was a boy" YEAH it would make sense if you had the trilogy end that way, because you'd already hinted at it. But they made no indication of that being the ending UNTIL the third film. And they could have chosen not to end it that way and people would probably have better opinions about the movie then.
If you spent two films building up the central theme that humans and dragons can and should coexist and have found true companions in each other, why would you suddenly decide to toss that out. If Hiccup spent two films protecting the dragons from harm why can't he continue to do that. Why did he give up. It's completely contradictory to his character, to the fundamentals of who Hiccup is as a person. Hiccup is stubborn. He's STUPIDLY stubborn and we've seen that over and over. And that stubbornness is usually what leads him to saving the day and coming up with some plan to keep everyone safe without having to run away. It's just frustrating 😔
And the concluding message of "We're going to wait until the world is safe and dragons can live among humans peacefully again" is really shallow bc how are you going to convince the world that dragons are good WITHOUT dragons. If they aren't there to set the example how are you going to sway people to the good side without any proof. Going off of that how is Hiccup going to change anybody's mind if he's sitting on an island in the middle of nowhere 'guarding the dragon's secret' or whatever bullshit lmao it's just so contradictory. Honestly that whole argument felt really rushed and not thought out well, like they needed some excuse and that was the best they could come up with. And honestly? The world is NEVER going to be completely safe, that's just not how the world works. There will always be danger and terrible awful people like Drago and Grimmel. But sitting on and island and hoping they might change their ways isn't going to do jack shit lmao you can't stop bad people from doing bad things by just twiddling your thumbs and praying for the world to be safe for dragons again. You gotta WORK for that, you need to put in the effort, and I just never got that impression from THW's ending. It really just felt like they were expecting all their problems to magically be fixed and I'm like BRO. You PROVED in the first two movies that you can do anything as long as you have your dragons. You can change the entire world view of an island, or a country, or the world if you put your mind to it. But I guess we're going to disregard all of that suddenly for no reason 🙃
And yeah YEAH I definitely agree with you on the whole found family thing. They seemed to forget all about that in THW too >:(
Don't get me started on how they ruined everyone's character development in 3 😭 They did Ruff dirty. AND Snotlout and Fishlegs and Tuff.
Anyway rant over LOL I'm glad that most people agree with me about THW! I know when it first came out people were getting angry defending it and I'm like no listen you gotta look past your nostalgia and love for the movies and criticize it properly. You cannot look me in the eyes and tell me that Toothless would choose a random female dragon over Hiccup. LIES and SLANDER

So I sent you an ask before your tumblr got deleted and I’m assuming the ask got deleted too. Basically, when I was watching Nimona I thought Ballistar got his prosthetic too quickly after his amputation. But I don’t actually know how long it takes for an amputation to heal, or to build up the strength needed to use a prosthetic. Also I would have liked to see him learn to use his prosthetic instead of using it perfectly from the beginning. But I’m not an amputee. Are my impressions of this accurate?
Yeah, I'm really sorry about that (also that it took me a little while to answer this time too!), I'm pretty sure my answer was actually the next post in my queue 😅.
So I haven't seen Nimona (I really want to, but I don't currently have Netflix lol) so I can only answer generally, but the healing time is different depending on what you mean by healed. If you mean just the wound healing, that takes a few weeks, usually 2-4 weeks. If you mean able to wear a prosthetic, for leg amps, that's usually 6-8 weeks, but I think it might be shorter for arm amputees since they aren't weight bearing through their stumps. Im not 100% sure, though. To fully heal (the swelling in the stump goes down, general pain settles, etc) can take a year or more, but most people will be back to their normal lives long before that, though. As for building up strength to use the prosthetic, that's really variable. Some people take to their prosthetics REALLY quickly, others take a while. The type of amputation is a big factor, but lots of other little things go into it too. Ballistar is an above-elbow amputee right? As I understand it, those kinds of prosthetics are quite difficult to use, both due to the strength needed and due to them not being super intuitive.
In saying all this though, unless its a focal point of the story or its a very grounded/realistic setting, I'm personally pretty lenient with most sci-fi/fantasy in this regards. We definatly need more media - even fantasy and sci-fi that shows that side of being an amputee or at least puts in effort to acknowledge it, but I think stories that lean a bit more into the fantasy side of things have their place too, especially in stories like Nimona where the focus seems to be elsewhere. This isn't to say you shouldn't try to include the realistic rep where you can, but you have to find a balance between realism and the tone your story has. Some stories really would benefit from the more grounded/realistic depictions that show everything, others might only need a brief mention. It depends on the story, and it's really hard to say where Nimona lies on that spectrum without having actually seen it, but from the little I have seen, I feel like it falls on the "brief mention" side of things since it already has so much going on.
I'm going to use How to Train Your Dragon as an example of what I'm trying to say, just becuase I know the first movie got a lot of critisism from amputees for having hiccup literally get up and start walking the moment he woke up after loosing his leg, but I think it lands in a similar area of the spectrum I'm talking about. HTTYD is one of those movies where having the more realistic approach wouldn't have really fit with the tone or pacing, but it would have benifited from a little more than what we got. Not much though, since we kind of already got it with toothless anyway. In my opinion, all it needed was a slight tweak to that ending scene and it would have been perfect (in my opinion). Personally, I would have made Hiccup (without a prosthetic) sit on toothless's back when they went out the door for the first time. The scene plays out almost exactly the same, and you get the symbolic framing the directors wanted, while acknowledging that walking so soon after a burn amputation is not going to happen. Gobber gives Hiccup the tail, saddle and his new leg in the bundle, which allows them to keep the "That bit's my handiwork, with a little hiccup flair thrown in. Think it'll do?" line. Hiccup can instead hold the leg in his hand and say "I might make a few adjustments" - everyone laughs and then it cuts to the end scene with them all flying with the implication some time has passed the same as in the real film. It's a small tweak, but I do think that's all it really needed.
Tumblr media
So yeah, While its great to have more realistic representation in your stories, you got to work within the tone your story has. There's no "one size fits all" way to approach it. Again though, I could be wrong about where Nimona would fall here, I know it does tackle heavy subjects in regards to trans representation and discrimination, so maybe it could have made it work. I'll probably talk more about it once I actually see the movie though!

What's one of your favorite childhood memories?
Hello, friend, good to see you, even if you do hide in the shadows. Hope you are well. <3
Let me tell you about a time I fell in love with storytelling all over again. I grew up on stories; I loved having my dad read to me when I was little (we read Narnia books, the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, Robin Hood, etc. I loved *all* of it). I loved the stories of found families and tight friendships like it was my bread and butter because I hadn't made any friends I could get closed to bc family moved around a lot (a decision I don't resent my family for now, but despised as a kid), and I wasn't really *that* close to my family either due to probably a variety of factors, not excluding mental health issues. I won't delve for the sake of length, you get the point. I was a sad and lonely child and my closest friends were imaginary. Anyway back to more concrete events:
We had just moved from Florida to Virginia, which is about 1000 miles away and over 13 hour drive (for context), and we had just started a new co-op (think like homeschool school, but it only met like once a week, it was one of the ways we'd start building up a new social circle or something). And one of the classes I took in was something music (more likely theater? related but that might have a different semester) and the first week of this co-op I remember they gave us a bingo card with a bunch of famous movie soundtracks and they told us we were going to identify the movie based on the song alone.
I got 2/20 or something bc I hadn't even heard of most of these movies bc i just hadn't been exposed to it. It was things like Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, maybe spongebob- pop culture stuff that I just hadn't seen. So everyone else was getting excited and I was feeling more and more out of the loop and alone.
I swear this turns happy at the end, bear with me, anon. They play the final music track and I don't recognize it at all but it fills me with such great joy and a call for a new adventure that I hadn't even realized music could do that before (we didn't listen to a lot of our own music growing up, it was mainly whatever my parents found appropriate or what my dad liked).
It was How To Train Your Dragon. Test Drive. John Powell. And then like the musical scores, they showed the scene it was from. A boy and his dragon racing, flying through the air. And I fell in love With the characters arcs per se, but I could tell there was a deep lore there and a story of friendship that I craved so much. It was also right up my alley with stories my Dad had read me so there was also that. But like the music was fantastic, I really liked the visuals at the time (i usually hate most 3D animation films, HTTYD is the exception), and I craved the story behind it.
I saved up money from Birthday and Christmas and ended up buying it. And I watched it. And I fell in love even harder. Cause, in some sense, I related to hiccup too much. I was a creative person, like he was, I had very little friends like he did at the beginning, we had similar senses of humor at some points, and he was fascinated with knowing and learning things. And he had a big dragon friend and i again craved that friendship deeply. So he added to the crew of imaginary friends and I went on many imaginary adventures with Hiccup and Toothless and told myself so many stories that I wish I could remember now for writing inspo.
I ended up moving from Virginia to middle of nowhere Midwest US (not saying where in case the Fey Find Out), and I did end up meeting my IRL Toothless. A little bit scary on the outside at firsts, but with an actual heart of a silly, goofy, dragon. (brb, im getting emotional just thinking about it. It'd be about 7 years now? Coming up? I may be bad at math. I feel old and happy and content.)
So yeh, in short it was a very much right place, right time kind of story and film. I still watch it a lot whenever I need a comfort film that's not as long as LOTR or something. I love the soundtrack and all of the things about it. Sorry, this was probably way longer than it should've been but IDK how to describe my love for this story without giving you some context.

films i think should have won best animated feature: 2001 - shrek deserved the w its a fun movie 2002 - again the winner was so deserved. spirited away is a masterpiece 2003 - i havent actually seen triplets of belleville but it looks soooo fucking good. but because i havent seen it i cant say it deserved it over finding nemo, which is indeed a very good movie. maybe this will change 2004 - the incredibles is such a good fucking movie obviously. shrek 2 is amazing but nowhere near the overall quality of the incredibles 2005 - now i love wallace and gromit with all my heart but miyazaki was robbed. still curse of the wererabbit is so much fun and its cool to see stop motion win 2006 - this year was dismal for animated films. i really dont care about monster house, cars or happy feet. honestly flushed away should have been nominated and won. i've also heard good things about paprika but i havent seen it so i'll hold my judgement 2007 - listen i loooooove ratatouille but is it better than persepolis? .......... no sorry. persepolis is the winner in my heart. but im not mad about ratatouille winning 2008 - what can i say we all know wall-e is a beautiful love story between a butch and a femme robot. deserved 2009 - fantastic mr fox was robbed sorry up fans 2010 - i havent watched the illusionist so again i cant say that deserved the oscar. i CAN say that httyd deserved it over toy story 3. ive never cared for the toy story franchise much 2011 - rango is a crazy weird movie but i think it is probably better than kung fu panda two. just a bit. there's something so interesting about the animation style. a cat in paris sounds fun as hell though 2012 - this year's nominees were also pretty weak. rise of the guardians was robbed. i guess of the actual nominees brave is probably my fave 2013 - who in their right mind voted for frozen over the wind rises. i just want to talk 2014 - song of the sea is a beautiful beautiful movie which is much better and more visually breathtaking than big hero 6. i have also heard incredible things about princess kaguya and i wouldnt be suprised if that was the more deserving movie. LEGO MOVIE WAS SNUBBED THOUGH I CANT BELIEVE THEY FUCKING LEFT OUT THE LEGO MOVIE. LEGO MOVIE SWEEP 4EVA 2015 - ive only seen the winner, inside out, which is a great movie, but i wouldnt be suprised if anomalisa or when marnie was there was better 2016 - ive always found zootopia's message pretty muddy even though its fun. my life as a courgette was robbed af. it is such a beautiful, heartfelt movie and the way it deals with horrific childhood trauma in such a sensitive and hopeful way. go watch my life as a courgette NOW 2017 - coco is a lovely movie but the breadwinner made me feel emotions i never want to experience again in the best way possible. cartoon saloon's visual style is one of the best out there and it needs more recognition 2018 - we all know into the spiderverse is one of the best animated movies of all time and none of the other nominees were even in the same ballpark. its laughable that ralph breaks the internet was even allowed to be in the same space as this masterpiece. 2019 - again i dont really care for toy story but i reeeeaaally didnt care for httyd3 or missing link. i havent seen ive lost my body so i cant say thats better, but i am looking forward to watching it. i would honestly say that klaus is the best one here, the style is so visually inventive and this take on santa claus is really great
2020 - listen soul is fun but it would have been so much better without all the little blue blobs. like the existential jazz shit was a 10/10 they should have just made a slice of life movie out of that. not an oscar winner imo. ESPEIALLY NOT compared to wolfwalkers. obviously im biased towards everything cartoon saloon but this movie is a culmination of their years-long efforts and a combination of what makes their movies great. im biased because im irish but the folklore balanced with the soul-crushing message on colonialism is just perfect storytelling. the animation is some of the best ive ever seen from 2d and oliver cromwell dies violently. literally the perfect movie it should have won over the usual "lets vote for pixar" 2021 - encanto is funsies but i have a soft spot for the mitchells vs the machines and think that should have won. luca is also pretty good. i havent seen flee but the idea of an animated documentary is so innovative so that probably also could have deserved it. im not mad that encanto won though. 2022 - i havent seen director man's pinnochio but ive heard its good so i cant dispute its win. but marel the shell with shoes on is my favourite from 22 2023 - honestly all the nominees except elemental are 10/10s but the competition was really only between spiderverse and boy and the heron. my personal fav out of the 2 is spiderverse but i totally understand why miyazaki won and im glad he's getting recognition from the academy again. i wanna see more love for robot dreams though. and of course nimona is bombastic. fuck disney 4eva
ok thats it thank you for reading my rant

YOU ALSO LIKE THE HTTYD BOOKS??? HELL YES. i have. been losing it over hiccup the second for. hours. and how hes the whole reason the story of the httyd books YET DOESNT EVEN FUCKING APPEAR ONCE IN THE HTTYD MOVIES. theres no hiccup the second equivalent. what the fuck. i could fit them in so easily. make them background context for why the majority of the archepeliago is hostile with dragons. hiccup the seconds death happened and the whole dragon rebellion happened very far ago leading to this sort of hostility but it was so long ago nobody really remembers and hiccup the second is vaguely remembered but nothing important about him actually is. furious doesnt even need to still be alive for this to work. hiccup the second. hautning the narrative. i like him
Ok first off. AHHHHHHH YES YES YES HELLO FELLOW HICCUP THE SECOND STAN!!!!! i actually watched the movie first and then the book so i was like "wow cool" on the first watch but Oh my god i would be so lying if i said i never once wished for a hiccup the second in the movies. Like i KNOW the movies are basically like a whole different thing from the books after the first one but?? BUT???? Idk im very biased i love the guy. Ik you pointed this out but he really is the reason for literally everything in the books if you care enough to look into it and i really do think him being some sort of background lore in the movies would be so cool.. *digging thru the httyd ao3 tags*
incidentally if you ask me to choose between the movies and the books i would say the books in a heartbeat. i love the movies it's one of my favorites but a) the books made me cry harder b) theres no hiccup the second OR hiccup the first c) the book lore is absolutely golden and ive never seen anything else top it and d) the movies overwrote fishlegs into almost non-existance which. HELLO?? EXCUSE ME???????
