New Here!

As a new fan of BTS and as someone who is curious/intrigued by the dynamic between jikook, I would genuinely love to know how the fans got to the place where it is now with the ships within the fandom. It's so toxic everywhere, and I'm a little shocked to be honest. I thought Are You Sure would be a cute show that the fandom would be excited to watch, but a lot of fans ignored it when the first two episodes were released (which in hindsight was probably for the best). And since the last episode dropped, there's been nothing but fighting.

For context I became a BTS fan in 2023 and so I don't really know all the history of every interaction prior (I'm still learning). I love every member and root for their success both individually and together as a team. As someone who is just learning about everything (I've been obsessively consuming all BTS content), and when it comes to Jimin and Jungkook's connection, I've seen some of the discourse about them online. To be fair I didn't really have an opinion one way or the other, since again I'm pretty new here, I'm trying to take content at face value. But after the first two episodes of Are You Sure, it feels obvious to me that there is an intimacy there between them. Even in episode three, JK can be seen rubbing Jimin's thigh when they are at the table, something that just looked automatic and natural for him to do. From all their earlier conversations in the first two episodes, to taking care of each other since they were both sick, to the concern, to Jungkook's "you're here. finally". Even though they were filming, it all just felt really real and honest. Plus Jungkook saying he wanted the show to go on for years even after they get out of the military, said more to me than anything else. Jungkook values spending time with Jimin and is already looking towards the future, just the two of them.

As for Taekook, it definitely seems to be the more widely accepted ship (I see so many accounts with hundreds of thousands of likes and followers on so many platforms). Plus there are so many taekook comments under pretty much any content related to BTS, even under content from people who are just reacting to BTS content on youtube or patreon. For all intents and purposes Jungkook and Tae seem to have a beautiful friendship, but I just don't see how people romantically ship them (no offense lol). And it's not because I don't see a connection between them, but because I just don't see how it would make much sense, and I'd want so much more for them from a partner lol. Like what would it say about their relationship if Tae was learning about JK traveling with someone else through a schedule on their BTS group chat, or having to basically invite himself, or how the last group live where JK seemed hyper-focused on Jimin (even though he was already planning to enlist with him), or JK watching hours of Jimin specific content on lives, or planning a travel variety show with someone who you were already planning to enlist/spend every day with, or being all over someone else in bed and repeatedly rubbing their legs (bandmate or not). Like no shade, but I feel like romantically shipping Tae and JK is lowkey insulting to them as people, because they both deserve to a be priority to whoever they are in a relationship with. Also a little confused how fans seem to ignore Tae having been in a relationship with Jennie??

All my confusion aside, I am just really looking forward to watching the rest of Are You Sure, and discovering more about them and their dynamic. I love that Tae joined, even if it clearly shifted the dynamic from the first two episodes, and hopefully all the negativity suddenly surrounding the show won't ruin my excitement and love for it.

Confession: I feel like lennabel is lowkey the weakest part of the comic. Yes its the selling point and the focus and everything but everything else like the misfits/lenores friendships, the spectres, all the side characters and backstories (especially lenores), the history of the school/where they are all way more interesting. And then oh heres another y/a "toxic but not actually because uhhh its hawt" ship. They have a secret conversation about the game or fodder or whatever. Or their "history" which is lenore forced to hang out with her and then being left with a bunch of insults? With lenore and her friends we see them grow and bond together but with lennbel they just hug or kiss or something. Why does lenore like annabel? Because...pretty? Because she gets all in lenores face? She always ignores what lenore has to say and literally tried to kill her friend without telling her. Like every other aspect of the comic is super neat and intriguing but The Ship is whatever. If lenore could just seriously break it off with her after what happened it wouldn't drag the story down anymore but it wont both cause spoilers and cause its what the whole marketing of the comic is.

I might get attacked for this, but I’m starting to ship Lennabel less and less as the comic progresses (Funny coming from a Mourn pfp), I enjoy them as individual characters and seeing their relationship progress but they’re not my “ship type”. It also seems like things aren’t going to end well for them, given that this a gothic story and their views are too different from each others.

I would also like to know more about the other characters and the setting as a whole, especially the deans (I love eldritch horror).

I think it’s fair to say that the reason we probably aren’t seeing more is because we are approaching a climax. As a writer myself, I feel like we are approaching something big that will reveal a few questions we might have about the academy and such.

This comic was sold as a “gothic sapphic horror romance” so that’s why its ship focused, but I really would like to see Lenore’s relationship with the misfits get stronger, and for Annabel to hopefully make a friend outside of Lenore.

I think it’s safe to say to just wait and see what will happen.

What are all of your opinions on this?

Edit: I just want to mention that I never said I hated White Raven, it’s just not my “ship type” but their relationship is interesting and I would like to see how their story progresses. Yes, I know that it’s a romance story. I guess I just don’t like how the fandom goes insane about them and is quick to hate on the other characters for “getting in the way”.

yeeeees it's the best version of them! i like it even more than like bickering friends at the mo. i've avoided jily for so long but i'd read 10000 jily divorce fics. they would both be so snappy and childish and having to have the last word. impeccable dynamic.

house in the woods is called that because i think it started from scene i had of lily always wanting a nice cottage, a cute little house in the woods, and then when she gets this isolated house and lifestyle, it's the cruelest iteration of her childhood fantasy and she realises that this domestic vision is not really what she wants at all. a lot of it i think will be lily's idealism slowly wilting but i also want to kind of weave in lowkey fairytale witch allusions. one thing i've recently thought of for this fic is lily sort of spying on james and sirius, coming up with charms to try and listen in on their conversations (because at some point in sirius' visits they lock themselves away) so there's this sense of lily like lurking

it's probably also going to be a lot about loneliness :( i think it will be about how being with james all the time and only seeing james in the house without sirius, and then seeing james in the house with sirius and the difference between those two situations will maybe make her feel like she never knew james that well, or she never saw his relationship with sirius in such stark contrast to her relationship with james and it's all these small moments leading up to (whether she perceives it romantically or not) that sirius is james' #1 and where the hell does that leave her?

i haven't written from lily's pov before which feels mad because she was a big original fave of mine but i'm loving getting into who she is and i also LOVE james and sirius from a third party's pov

ultimately jily vs j/s is no real comparison to me. firstly from a canon standpoint we just know so much more about james and sirius' bond. i started out reading jily when i got into hp fandom but there was just so much about james/sirius that i couldn't ignore. like when you think about how james and lily's started going out in their seventh year (1977) and died in 1981 that's four years from start to finish, whereas james and sirius have ten years of history by that point. and i know that time isn't always comparable but given what we know about the intensity of james and sirius' friendship, in this case i think it counts for a lot. and i think that james would always choose sirius first, always trust sirius at most. i don't really think there's anything that could unbolt that bond or surpass it. not that spouses and friends ever have to be in competition but..........sirius wins, i'm just saying.

Hi! Been a fan of you for a very, very long time now, and I can't help but wondering what with the most recent puritanism wave ruining so many fandoms, have you received any hate? If so, how do you deal with it? Any advice for us putting up with it but refusing to stop writing just because strangers on the internet don't approve of it? Frankly, I admire how you keep writing for yourself despite all the toxicity going around lately especially now that I have seen so many accounts being attacked so viciously over what they ship or like to write about

so, i think for me it's a combo of getting lucky and doing my best to ignore it. it helps that i wasn't on twitter for a long time, because lots of call-outs and aggressive puritan behavior have been happening over there more than on tumblr (at least recently). i do have a fic-related twitter now but it's pretty lowkey. so i think i've just flown under the radar, even though i have a solid readership.

there's also the fact that i write for so many fandoms and that might help disperse my presence. i've noticed that ppl who write exclusively for 2-3 fandoms (especially very popular ones) get more attacks, but i could be wrong.

that being said, ignoring it and doing your thing is probably the best way to go about it, which is what i try to do. i've seen folks say they're going to delete their fics or stop writing altogether and while i respect that choice, because we all have to take care of ourselves, i feel like doing that just plays into the bullies' hands. this hobby brings us joy and it brings other people joy. we shouldn't deprive ourselves (and others) of that. you said it best: "writing for yourself". that's an important element. this is a very personal, accessible, totally gratuitous way of making art and we just have to remember that as we carry on. i get sometimes wanting to walk away from it. especially if someone is being genuinely harassed, staying off-line for a while might be necessary. we have to keep ourselves safe first. but i naively hope stories will prevail, meaning that a lot of these boring, sanctimonious bullies will hopefully fade away and what will remain is our passion for writing and reading stories.

I am, to some extend, a pro-shipper. I barely have any preferences when it comes to Ram ships, I'm fine with just about any (including self-inserts and OCs)

•In public, Toy Bonnie seems really cocky, keeping you close and acting like you're the one seeking for his affection "Yeah~ of course [Y/N] wants to stay close to me. They love me the most!"

•He just loves to show you off to everyone, make sure everyone knows how the two of you are close and together. Constantly showing you affection and flirting without shame.

•But in private Toy Bonnie changes a little, you already know how great he is right? So he doesn't try to drill it into your head all the time and at the same time make sure everyone else knows that you like him the best.

•Toy Bonnie likes cuddles, hesitant on touching you outright at first but he prefers if you keep your hands on him, from cupping his face to holding his hand or hugging him. It's also an indication of Toy Bonnie being allowed to touch you.

Oh dear, Gale's take on your AU is a disaster

The one thing that all of the fandom can absolutely agree on is that Marinette's crush in Adrien is *not* healthy.

She often humiliates/embarrasses herself, she's constantly pressured into confessing, and it often brings down her self esteem

The whole point of your AU was to comment on how the narrative both refuses to give Mari a chance to confess or move on, trapping her in this never ending loop where she keeps chasing after him

It's so obvious Gale read that as "Look at how Toxic Adrien is! He's killing her!!"

When reading your AU, that's very clearly not what you were intending to do. When Luka talks about how upsetting the string is, he often blames "fate", not *Adrien*. Adrien doesn't even know what's going on. At no point did you make him tug on the strong and laugh maniacally at Marinette struggling to speak

All you're doing is taking the concept of soulmates, and commenting on how that puts people in a box – and I like that. It's a good twist

If I recall as well, someone else had made the same assumption about the AU; that this was some act by Adrien/that something that wasn’t just--the universe, was doing this to her, when that’s not the case.

There’s some sprinkles of Adrien/Chat salt but the guy gets like--barely any screen time in the AU. It’s about Marinette, Luka, the red string and trashing the concept of soulmates, and Marinette getting to choose who she wants in the end.

Marinette’s crush on Adrien isn’t good for her. I couldn’t even pretend to care about Paris, but “Backwarder”? “Miracle Queen”? Think of all the things that wouldn’t have happened and that Marinette wouldn’t be blaming herself for had the crush not been there. The damages far outweigh the benefits.

Even if you ignore the love square’s issues entirely, the plot of the show goes out of its way to convey to us that Marinette would be better off having never met Adrien.

And yeah, I’m more just rolling my eyes at this kind of behavior in the fandom. People hating on me or my ideas/AUs is nothing new and it doesn’t bug me on that level.

It still baffles me that there are full adults with working lives that send hate online to other users because they don’t like the same fictional character or they don’t like the same fictional couple. It’s almost like a mark of maturity rather than just logic if a person just does not engage someone with opposing opinions. I’m in multiple fandoms some of which have children or teenagers. And there’s random strife like any other fandom. However, many of these anon haters are often kids. But in the ACOTAR fandom/universe (the Maas Multiverse, maybe?) most readers are older. And they engage in sending online hate. It’s just unimaginable how telling someone to fuck off or writing 20+ reasons why they’re wrong gives any sense of satisfaction. I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand it, because I do. Not the sending people hate thing, but the obsession with being right and having the last word. Totally get it. I do. Especially when you're in it up to the eyeballs and someone is saying things that are flagrantly untrue, it's really hard to just walk away, especially when things start to get personal. But also - why are we here? Just speaking for myself, I'm not in this fandom to get into fights with people. I joined because I really enjoyed ToG, I was waiting for EoS, and I wanted more rowaelin. I wanted fan art, I wanted to read fanfic because the books weren't enough, and I wanted to find people who had the same feelings I did! I wanted people to scream happily with! That's why I joined, and that's why I'm still here. It wasn't like this pre-acosf, and I am just waiting for the next book to be announced because all of this seems oddly more related to being right than actually... liking the thing they supposedly like (although I do lowkey worry that the fandom culture has irrevocably changed.) So once people find out how wrong or right they were, hopefully there will be a huge shift and people will realize that ultimately, SJM is going to do what the fuck she wants to do, and fandom exists for us to do what we want to do.

This is an interesting point. It should be logic. It should be just completely normal to back away from things we don't like and move on with our lives, but at this point it is also, to me, a huge sign of how mature someone is.

In no way does it make sense to me to keep consuming media either 1) that I dislike, or 2) in a way that bothers me. That's partly why I dislike anti culture, but it's like that mindset has infiltrated the regular fandom, too.

That's why I said last week that people are slamming their thumbs with hammers and looking up with tears in their eyes trying to get sympathy. You searched those tags, logged out to find those blogs you hate who have you blocked, and went into the toxic communities, bestie. No one made you consume that. You did it. You saw it, maybe unintentionally the first time, but at this point it's been 15 months since acosf came out so I can only assume you're choosing to see it and stare at it, and now you want sympathy? lol, no.

So yeah, what does it mean that people keep repeatedly, intentionally, knowingly engaging with content they hate and then cry about it as a way to gain sympathy and clout? It's neither mature, nor logical.

Meta Marcy Wu

           Marcy really does have that energy of like. Someone who doesn’t have a whole lot of ‘opinions’ on bigger matters (such as the conflict between Toads and Newts, Sasha and Anne, Maddie and her sisters, etc.) so she just sort of. Awkwardly waits and sits off to the side, kind of biding her moment for when it’s finally over. Letting others take charge so long as she gets her own little space to function in. She’s not against or for anyone in particular, she just needs people to decide for themselves who she should follow, Marcy prefers to be a follower and ONLY that- Her debut has her asserting her own control for herself, but she doesn’t seem to care much else about others, I’m afraid.

           Contrast that with Anne, who needs her own control- BUT she also has the Heart, so she cares about others, she’s proactive and has agency despite initially being told to be reactive and not stand up for herself. Even if she can’t stand up for herself, she will stand up for others… And I think she was lowkey influenced by Sasha’s obsessive desire to protect the girls, and that played into Anne being a little bit toxic, but ultimately learning and having that inner fire to take a stance on things based on moral reasons, whereas Sasha seems more concerned for power than the actual social plight of the Toads- So even if Anne isn’t with the rebellion, it’s ultimately something she WOULD fully dedicate herself towards, like when we saw her stand up for the Frogs against Bog and the other Toads.

           And like, I have to wonder if Marcy’s more hands-off, simple follower approach is lowkey what contributed to Sasha’s belief in controlling others, because it validated that- But at the same time, we talk about how Sasha might care more for Anne than Marcy, and we see how Sasha is frustrated by Toadie, who is but an echo chamber for her. So maybe while Marcy is convenient to her, she’s just a bit too passive and thus not as ‘fun’ as a friend as Anne, who is also a concern because she has genuine motive to question Sasha not just on the basis of their friendship, but people OUTSIDE of it, which Marcy doesn’t.

           Anne being fiercely loyal and protective and sticking up for others, it also could’ve fed back into Sasha’s own tendencies as well. And of course these more proactive, in-your-face girls, always on the frontlines, are going to clash, while Marcy the forgotten follower, the wall-flower, the one in the background focused on more ‘nerdy’ things that are less glamorous, like logistics and whatnot… SHE’s the lynchpin that actually tips the scales- Because she’s the third girl who ‘sides’ with Anne between the initial conflict from Season 1. She’s the one with Andrias, flipping things up when Anne and Sasha are going to fight, contributing to that prophesized endgame.

           Marcy is the one, ironically, with the power –albeit as an extension of Andrias really- and so she’s the antagonist who’s clashing with Sasha, who is also power-hungry, but really beginning to learn as well. Marcy is caught up in her own little fantasy land and world, both literally and figuratively, happily enjoying and watching as a witness and bystander, almost detached in a sense to really participate and appreciate it as a very real thing… And being separate and an ‘audience’ member, Marcy is of course forgotten by Sasha and Anne, who play the part of characters; Fitting, because in that one flashback, they were Captain Hook and Peter Pan, while Marcy worked back-stage, literally pulling the strings (well, rope) for Anne!

           It’s Marcy who’s obsessed and fascinated with the meta of fandom and fiction, so of course she’s the one who steps back and observes it like media, takes the time to comment on it as if it were all tropes, watching and enjoying while for Sasha and Anne they participate directly without that kind of detached meta awareness, the kind someone like Andrias would have, because for THEM it’s real, there are stakes, power for Sasha and people for Anne! And Marcy is the backstage audience, fourth-wall crewmember, unnoticed by all who forget and ignore her, and she’s used to it. Maybe Marcy even enjoys and prefers it that way, and/or learned to- And it’s too late to pay attention, to see themselves as characters in that wider play and story and plot, unlike Andrias who notices and takes advantage… And may have been writing since who knows HOW early?

           If I could get into meta, Marcy playing that quiet, unnoticed support role, doing whatever’s convenient- It reminds me of how the visual basis for your typical Ninja in black garb… It came from plays where performers in black garb would maneuver props, and the audience was supposed to intentionally ignore them, see them as separate from the actual story; But every now and then, one play might have a ‘twist’ where that background actor actually IS a character, and assassinates someone to reveal themselves as the hidden Ninja!

          So maybe Marcy is like that… The background crewmember, not calling attention to herself in the acting role- In plain sight but we figure we’re meant to ignore, and so we’re utterly blindsided when she DOES strike! It’s Marcy who appreciates the little technical know-how and details, valuing the role that Frogs and agriculture play, considering Newtopian infrastructure, working back-stage in a Peter Pan play… Appreciating the writing conventions and tropes of her favorite games and fantasies, and so that in a way enables her to ‘game’ the system in a sense, play into it with her own hands, or even set up that game and story in the first place, because she knows how to make one!

          She is the drummer while Anne and Sasha play guitar and sing, not as glamorous or recognized amongst a crowd, but just as vital as the rest… She’s a very META kind of person, befitting her choice of METAmorphosis as part of her drummer costume! You don’t pay mind to a caterpillar, but then little do you know, it becomes an even more unnoticeable cocoon… Only to sprout into a brilliant butterfly! But while the BLUE butterfly is associated with Anne and her connections back home through Pearl Paddock, who is representative of familial bond, remembering who you are… Marcy is disconnected, she’s a GREEN butterfly, green like the lilypads of Amphibia, and she wants to stay there!

          And the best part, I think? I don’t think Marcy herself is even fully aware of what she’s doing… I doubt she sees herself as some clever manipulator. She’s just doing what she can, having her fun plans and machinations like in New Wartwood, but she’s not ACTUALLY approaching this as some devious mastermind- She’s literally just a kid! She gets caught up in her own things, because she is an autistic mood, and I get that! I resonate with that! And so it’s so easy for Marcy to be blindsided by HERSELF, by her own flaws and borderline antagonistic role in the story, to realize what she’s doing is kind of messed up and trivializing- Because we know that she WANTS to care, but it’s so easy and convenient for her to forget and play into the fantasy… Especially with someone like Sasha, and especially Andrias, to enable her, to provide that safety and support net that MARCY doesn’t complain about or take for granted, unlike that ‘ungrateful’ Anne, as Sasha might’ve one said!

           And if Marcy isn’t really self-aware of her own issues or even the full messed-up scope of her actions, to take a look back and critically examine herself the way she might a character or even her own friends; Then that can also make her a victim to her own antics, just as Sasha kept burying herself into a deeper hole. And it’s hard to do the right thing, if you don’t even realize you’re messing up in the first place- Recognizing your fault is kind of one of THE foundations of actual reform, growth, and redemption. I think Marcy needs guidance, and she needs to show more initiative and take a stance not just for herself, but regarding others as well… And that can lead to her choosing between Anne and Andrias.

           Andrias, whose name is like Anne’s but more fantastical, who is blue like Anne’s motif… And who looks after her like a good friend, makes things easier and promises they will be! And he’s invested into the fantasy, he doesn’t want to go home and complicate things, get into fights with Sasha, because it’s the person in charge who decides how it is, right? Which is why True Colors continues to concern me… Amidst, you know, the many OTHER issues as well.

Hi Allie! I am a new Larrie here. I recently started liking one direction and my bias is Louis. Since I started watching their interviews and video diaries ultimately I ended up finding the romantic/flirty dynamic between Harry and Louis. I wasn't sure if I was being delusional so I checked the comments and most of them are Larry shippers with the occasional Zarry or Ziam shippers. I Stan BTS too, been an army before a Directioner so I thought the biggest ship would be fake. I know Kpop is different from English bands but still applied the same rule. I hope you wouldn't mind this long ass essay type question I wanted to ask you. In Kpop the marketing promotion is entirely different. There is fanservice, which is not widely used in One direction I guess. Basically the teenagers like the most attractive people of the group to act gay and ship them, so the reality is far from the acting they do for fans. So the most popular ships in BTS didn't vibe with me. It seemed manufactured. Yep their friendship is genuine but I strongly ship or rather believe a lowkey ship in the band. I believe 2 members in the band are together, but those two together aren't the fan favorite so they have to act with other members to please fans. It's complicated but its a successful kpop strategy.

Koreans are homophobic and one gay singer who came out got less and less opportunities in music industry. Thus them coming out is gonna take a long time. The difference though is unlike Syco, Big hit label/HYBE (BTS label) isn't homophobic. So they approve of their relationship and keep it hidden, also its similar to the dark larries. Some big people know the truth but don't comment on it. And the members of the band actually protect the real relationship. So the fanservice ships serve as an effective tool in hiding the real relationships and also generating revenue from the fake ships the bands create to keep fans engaged. This logic didn't seem to apply to One direction. And I love love Larry. I became a Larrie after watching them and to make sure that I am not making it up I saw the proof, timeline and stuff. One thing which offended me was few disrespectful Zarry shippers. The Zarry documentary channel actually swayed me in the beginning but to me it seemed like a normal flirty friendship dynamic. They managed to insult Louis, Zayn and Harry by creating a narrative for their own benefit. I was extremely offended with that. Comments under these videos called Louis horrible names and made fun of him and they don't see reason if we try to reply them. In the end I just left it like that, no use in wasting my time to answer these toxic people. And I found my safe space with tumblr. Thank you very much for being here.. For all your blogs and posts. And one more thing.. This was the actual question I wanted to ask. In YouTube there is a video called "Dating expert analysis on Larry Stylinson by Anthony Recenello". I watched it before, he commented on the Paris interview and said there was 0% romance between them and 100% flirty friendship dynamic. How how do you analyse a closeted relationship with just one video? I was slightly offended but to each their own I guess. Its his opinion. And he was also polite throughout the video. In the comment section though, there was a Larrie comment who became offended with his answer. They talked about years of actual solid proof and consistencies and not random moments.. The way they said it was slightly rude but their comment had a valid argument though. The dating expert could have ignored answering it. But he chose to answer with "Harry maybe a queer, but he is 100% not with Louis". Like why why.. I respected his opinion but just like that he comments this. I know nothing about BTS but your comparisons between the two bands are very interesting. I just wanted to add that One Direction had plenty of fan service in the early days too, Harry and Louis "bromance" was milked a lot until they probably decided that things were getting out of control a little bit and pushed them even further inside the closet. But like you said, both bands marketing strategies are entirely different. One Direction came from a long generation of boybands that were marketed specifically for young girls to fall in love with them and to dream that somehow would be possible. Just like NSYNC, Take That, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, etc... Maybe if they were still an active band things would be different now. BTS is for an entirely new generation, it was created for a very different purpose too. But definitely interesting to see the parallels.

As for your question, I think that after a while things get old and you get a thicker skin. I rarely feel genuinely offended about something in the fandom, because I simply don't care.... I don't even bother to look into this kind of video you mentioned because why would I even do that. I don’t believe Larry is real because of an interview, or one tattoo, or one moment. It’s so many things combined and there’s so much context involved. I’m always open to new opinions and perspectives but I believe what I believe because I have critical thinking, it’s not because someone told me to believe that, I’m seeing things and getting to this conclusion myself because it’s what makes sense to me. So there’s no reason for me to make this experience about who is right or whatever. Plus, contrary to popular belief, it’s not like we’re questioning science here, so people just need to chill.

I think one of the quickest things to breed toxicity is a sense of superiority. When you feel like you have the high ground, it's easier to look down upon others and harder to look within yourself. We saw it with general mcytblr during the escapee era; everyone constantly was on about mcytblr's supremacy over mcyttwt and completely failed to recognize and come to terms with flaws in their own behavior. I think that's some of the problem with trafficblr/hcblr - because the dteam side of the mcyt fandom is such a hot mess (and I as a Dream-main will readily admit that) they believe they're above it. Hell, I did too! I lowkey idolized (very lowkey, but still) the hc blogs for their chillness. But that's not how this is. We're all just people in fandoms and as such we're very much alike in a lot of ways. Their ccs rage and trash talk and falter and so on and so on just like the ones I enjoy do, but because they have that false-bottom pedestal they rag on "our side" for it and don't care to consider theoretical hypocrisy.

This isn't every hc fan/trafficblr member - my dash is HIGHLY hc focused nowadays bc in the midst of the lull a lot of people I follow switched over - but I think it's worth considering. I am always ready to talk about the problems with the parts of the fandom I'm in, even when I myself don't agree with the criticisms, but I just don't see that energy shared and swapped among them in general. I don't know if I'd call them "awful" like you because my experience with them as a whole has been incredibly limited (and usually incredibly negative because those are the ones who tend to cross over) but I'm very sorry that's been your experience.

The thing about Arthur critical ppl that bugs me is that they seem to love to ignore all the wonderful things about Arthur make him out to be this jerk. Esp in regards to Merlin. I've seen Merwaine shippers act like Gwaine is the only one who cared about Merlin. As if Arthur didn't risk his life and go against his father for Merlin after knowing him for a couple of weeks. Or defy his father again to help him save his village. And that was just at the very beginning. I'm not saying Arthur didn't have plenty of flaws but the thing is so did the others including Merlin. But Arthur was also an inherently wonderful person who did his best and it frustrates me how ppl try to gloss over that or downplay his trauma.

Honestly, Arthur's character was the most inconsistently developed out of them all and it was frustrating. But even then, it's super easy to make out which scenes were in character for him and which weren't and I feel Arthur haters refuse to see that on purpose, just to have an excuse to mindlessly hate on him. I'm not saying he was perfect or that he didn't have faults but he was without a doubt one of the best characters on the show. He was complicated and made bad decisions sometimes and there were moments when he was a little oblivious and lost too but at his core, he was fundamentally a good person, who ALWAYS strived to do his best, to improve himself, to be a better king for his people and TBF 200% had a better moral compass till the end than most of the others. Gwaine stans should understand that their fave decided to follow Arthur and pledge him his undying loyalty for a reason.

Anyway, don't even get me started on how annoying it is when his pretty heavy trauma is ignored and dismissed, especially when it's done so in comparison to Morgana. BOTH OF THEIR TRAUMAS WERE DIFFERENT BUT EQUALLY DAMAGING AND THEY BOTH DEALT WITH THEM IN DIFFERENT WAYS. Don't fucking talk to me if you think differently.

Coming on to a different topic, Merwaine is a great ship, just like most ships in the show. I see the appeal in it, I lowkey ship it myself but what I'm really tired of is Merwaine shippers (or any other non-Merthur shippers) using their ship as a goddamn weapon to undermine Merthur and establish their ship as superior or better. Maybe there can be multiple good things in the same franchise and people have different tastes and enjoy different things? Maybe live and let live? Maybe let people ship whatever they want without trying to shove some far-reaching "toxic" elements of a ship down their throat just because you're salty that their ship is more popular than yours? I've seen this sort of meaningless activism a lot in this fandom and it's unfortunately put me off some great ships.
