i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.

two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!

...'i love you,' cheeks flushed and stuttering. I feel like giyuu would say it first, sanemi wouldn't dare less giyuu didn't return it (he's all doubtful sometimes :((( )

...date, both just staring awkwardly at each other and trying not to eat too messily

...person they told, I think they're the type to keep it a secret for reputation's sake but both being horrible at hiding it and formally telling, maybe, shinobu only because giyuu accidentally let it slip he and sanemi were going to meet up while he was under some numbing medicine

...hand holding? they wouldn't dare in front of anyone, but after a mission they were heading to the nearest wisteria house for hopefully some tea or something to energize them and they were walking close together, giyuu brushed by sanemi's arm on accident but sanemi interpreted it as wanting to hold hand—they walked with hands intertwined until the house came into view<3

...sleepover! they cuddled for sure (the wisteria house owner suspected they were dating and 'accidentally' forgot to lay out a second futon. they assured her she didn't have to go to the trouble of laying out another and for some part of the night stayed at their respectable edge of the futon and woke up hugging—sanemi was just used to cuddling someone because he used to snuggle with his siblings when they had nightmares and his instincts just popped back at the excess warmth under the sheets)

...time staying over at the other's house, giyuu stayed at sanemi's. this was before they were dating and after a paired mission, it had been raining and sanemi (ever the gentleman lmfao) told him that if he walked home, giyuu would end up running to shinobu's with a fever and forced him to stay until it stopped raining

...time realizing they loved each other!!! this one's very silly: when giyuu found out, it was probably around the previous one where he stayed at sanemi's. he was kinda touched by the thought and he started thinking about sanemi more after that. sanemi, meanwhile, found out a while ago. he'd probably been crushing on giyuu for ages before he realized it, then went apeshit when he figured himself out.

...time getting caught- between missions they steal kisses from each other, a demon slayer walked in on them in the middle of a post-mission makeout session (luckily they didn't actually know the person but it was embarrassing nonetheless)

yes i'm rooting for m*leven breakup because byler is neat but mostly? i'm rooting for m*leven breakup for the sake of el and mike.

to me, their romance was always a puppy love born out of a combination of social pressures, naïve curiosity, and a lack of true understanding regarding intimacy and romantic love and what it really is. it was real in that they do truly, deeply care about each other and they are close friends, maybe even shared an attraction, but a maturing romance is so much more than that. they've grown up and out of being boyfriend/girlfriend, and that's okay! i think television/film needs to show more often that most of us don't have definite "soulmates" or first childhood loves that we spend our whole lives with. it doesn't mean these relationships meant nothing and didn't impact us, it just means they've run their course and that something else is in the cards, and this is part of life!

i've always felt el was at her best and most confident self when broken up with mike, discovering who she was and what she liked alongside another girl her age instead of just relying on mike for mentorship on how to live in the real world. she deserves more of an opportunity to find herself, her autonomy, and her independence, and to love who she is, and she's made it clear she's felt insecure in the relationship with mike because she isn't being loved and understood the way she wants, needs, and deserves from someone who is her partner.

also, it's okay if mike doesn't love her in "the way he should". he is not obligated to love her romantically and stay in a relationship with her just because she's a girl, because she "needed someone", or because he cares about her a lot. he shouldn't be pressured into a romance if it's not truly coming from his heart. he deserves freedom to find out and honour who he is, too, instead of just staying in his non-functional first relationship — one he got into as a child, essentially — and defining himself that way because it's what's expected when a boy and a girl are close. he loves her in some way, yes, but it's okay if he doesn't feel comfortable or secure being her boyfriend anymore, for whatever reason that is. he's felt insecure too, and that's valid and it matters.

they are their own people and are steadily growing and changing every day. they need time to figure out who those people are, and it's become clear (at least in my opinion) that those people aren't meant to be a couple at this stage.

they deserve freedom. they deserve to grow up and be authentic to themselves and not feel like they need to lie for the sake of a relationship. they deserve to move on from this version of their relationship that isn't making them happy and rekindle the best part of their bond: their strong, beautiful friendship. they don't have to be a couple if it doesn't make them stronger and better and happier people.

i think it would be healthy and wonderful for a show, especially one consumed frequently by young adults, to show a relationship starting, progressing, and ending on good terms in this way. sometimes things don't work out, and that is okay.

Draco looks over at Potter. Like he always does. Every single day.

Some times Potter seems to notice it, some times he doesn’t. He just keeps talking, or studying, or walking, or whatever he’s doing.

Walking alongside one or more of the Weasley kids, talking to the Weaslette, laughing with Granger, smirking at the Thomas guy, giving someone from the Gryffindor quidditch team a pat on the back while the sarcasm is dripping off his lips, like it always does.

Merlin, is he sarcastic.

It hurts that every pissed off comment he’s ever said to Draco is genuine. Why can’t Potter be sarcastic to him too? Say “shut up, Draco” with no bite at all, smile at him, grin at him, put an arm around him, walk with him to lessons, smile smile smile at him-

And just like that, Draco is frozen in his tracks. Halfway past Potter, leaning against the wall as he’s talking to Longbottom, and Draco just freezes.

Harry is making eye contact across the hall, keeping his green eyes steadily interlocked with Draco’s. Steadily, but just a quick glance, and then he’s looking at Longbottom again, nodding and smiling.

Draco realises he’s almost gone the whole way by Potter without spitting out a single insult. Is it weird? Unsual? Probably. But with his heart fluttering in his chest like this, he’s not sure he can’t utter a word right now.

Harry meets his gaze again, a bit longer now. Turning the corner of his lips up in a small, careful smile, his left eyebrows raised slightly. Draco can’t tell if it’s some sort of trick, if looking at Draco like that is amusing him.

His smile is soft and barely there. Yet so, so different to anything Draco has ever received from him before.

Carefully, Draco smiles back, and Potter nods to him and turns back to talk to Longbottom once more.

Nothing special has happened. Nothing much, really. But… it might just be a little bit special for a boy who craves the attention from the very same man that is standing there, a few steps away. So close, yet so far.

This is the beginning of nothing, but it is a start. It gives Draco hope, enough hope and spring in his steps so that he might actually be able to… to… take that very first step that actually might mean something. A step towards something more with Potter.

Maybe he’ll be brave enough. Another day.

im really sorry w the delay on kickoff u guys :(( this is the longest break i've had between chapters n i feel so bad ab it but honestlyyy i'm just. idk. i got really insecure w my writing all of a sudden out of nowhere n it's like i'm fighting an uphill battle trying to write this chapter SDKFHSDJKF but. i'm working on it here n there :''') SORRY IVE GOT ANXIETY MY MIND IS A PRISON but i'd reaallyyy like to get it out next week
