i am at the looking-at-dolls-as-self-soothing part of the night. i definitely wanna beef up my bratz collection since unboxing my alwayz bratz yasmin was just like... oh... oh man... and... and i didn't think it'd be like that for me man i didn't think i had as much nostalgia for bratz as i actually do not just buy owning some but by touching them and playing w their clothes and their hair.

and one of my issues of course is that i'm a redhead and as a redhead my Default Lookalike Doll is meygan (not that having a doll that looks like you is the most important part of bratz, but it is so much of the fun right? the fact that there's a character out there for just about everyone?). and i like meygan as a character well enough, that's not the issue. but of the meygan dolls that have been reproduced, there's none of them that are like, hardcore needs for me except for sweetheart meygan. and i did not buy sweetheart meygan in time. i was not really collecting at that point. that was like 2022. i had a few... na na na surprise dolls at that time. which is funny bc i have four of those that i got all either on clearance or w giftcards and i do really like them even though a lot of doll collectors thought they were kinda dumb, and they were. i just liked the gimmick of the fabric bodies and there were just enough dolls i thought were really cute that i kinda caved at one point. i also knew it was a brand i wouldn't go overboard with. anyway. we were talking about meygan...

sorry meygan back to you girl. i know original 2000s bratz that have not yet been reproduced at crazy expensive on the secondhand market and it's genuinely out of control. but sweet heart meygan, both the repro and the original, are selling for triple digits on mercari, ebay, what have you. that's just ridiculous. frankly. i'm not buying her at that. i don't even like her enough to hunt for her regularly, if that's how it's gonna be. there are plenty of more readily-available bratz dolls that are either regular retail price or clearancing online andin stores. did you guys know alwayz bratz jade is going for 15 bucks on amazon right now? that's crazy. the other always bratz dolls aren't going for that low if they're even marked down yet. that release wasn't even that long ago. anyway i'm thinking of getting jade from that line bc i know some ppl thought that alwayz jade was a let-down, but i thought she was cute. yasmin was my favorite from that line and that's why i got her but jade was my second fave there easily.

i also wanna get the kumi they reproduced sometime and maybe girls nite out cloe since i see she's still available. it's funny there aren't that many core girls i've wanted from the repros but if i go for any of the cloes, new or old, it's gotta be girls nite out. cloe isn't even usually my favorite character no offense blondes she's just kinda. she's just kinda cloe to me. idk i love her but i'm not gagged over her most of the time. these are still bratz standardz we're talking about here so obviously i love her.

there's nothing going on in the world right now other than my bratz dolls. and if someone we won't mention wins the election, i'm definitely going doll crazy. i'm gonna be buying dolls after this anyway, but i'm gonna justify spending an unusual, nearly-irresponsible amount of money. you know. bc i'm an adult and i can.

no barbie, no striker, no crimson, no asmodeus (directly, although his imagery is everywhere + fizz and mammon appear), no paimon -- this not to say none of them will show up, but am enjoying that a lot of this is clearly pulling from s1, with the focus on verosika, DHORKS, and CHERUB -- potentially a lot of the s2 villains need some time to lick their wounds a bit (and paimon was never a Villain, just a terrible parent... if he ever returns though...)

and barbie... i do want to see barbie again soonish ngl, she needs some proper introducing, but this is already giving so much callback and continuation of immediate plot-threads, very excited

S1: The Birb's Feelings

(pt 1.5 for episode 7 and 2 for season 2 idk when cause shit's crazy rn)

Stolas is one of the most morally controversial characters in the show. With the show revolving around Blitz's relationships, it's natural that the show gives us the most information about him because he is arguably Blitz's most complicated relationship at the moment (I'm not going to include Barbie bc we've literally only seen her for like 5 minutes in one episode which isn't enough information). I wanted to do a quick overview of how I perceive Stolas's feelings throughout the duration of the show in sort of a timeline format

~Episodes 1, 2, 5~

So, at first, it's obvious Stolas doesn't really think of Blitz too romantically and mostly sexually. Ok, completely sexually. However, there's a reason why that people often overlook sometimes. Stella openly said in the season 2 premiere that the only time him and her had sex was to have Octavia. Man's literally been deprived of anything enjoyably sexual his whole life. So when he finally does have sex that's enjoyable for the first time, he naturally wants more of it

As we all know, Stolas isn't the most self aware king (or should I say prince) out there (which is okay; he's still growing and developing as a character). The way he treats Blitz in these first few episodes sort of gives off sex toy vibes. Obviously, this is where Blitz gets that mindset from, that all he is is just a toy for Stolas

But after seeing what Stolas' true personality is now, I highly doubt Stolas knew exactly how he was treating Blitz during this time. Again, self awareness issues. Natural part of his character that, after watching Viv's writing since the Hazbin pilot first released (yeah og right here), I'm positive will be developed on later in the show. So hold your horses people, we're just now 2 episodes away from only being halfway through with the show. Give it time, it'll happen

Anyways, Stolas isn't a bad person (I'll fight anyone over this take, dont play). But he does the wrong things with the right intentions. He treated Blitz the way he did in these first few episodes because Blitz was the first person he's ever enjoyed having sex with. It's a big deal to him as it sort of "awakened" him. I think he was so happy about the sex after around 35 years of nothing, he didn't fully realize how he was treating Blitz in the process

~Episode 6~

My favorite episode. Stolas shows up when I.M.P.'s sort of cornered by the agents and scares them shitless with his scawy big birb form. First he makes sure Blitz is okay, then he scolds him for getting caught. Almost like a mother who's mad but cares for their well-being (crying in ghostfuckers)

This may seem small to you guys, but for me this was when Stolas became my favorite character. Not only did this moment show he's more than just the cringy comedic horny relief, it also showed that he cared. Why would he ask if Blitz is okay if he didn't care about him? That has nothing to do with the book. If it got in possession of humans he could literally just kill them in like a second and take it back. Tbh (dont come after me pls) but before this episode I didn't like my first impression of Stolas. Despite the many takes calling the cringiness of his lines in the first few episodes "iconic", I hated it. It was just too much

And in this scene it's not just that he's asking in general, it's how gentle he's being with Blitz. Holding his face and speaking a bit softer with a caring expression on his face. I love it so much (aggghghhghghgahhaagh). I know his attitude changes after a few seconds, but still it was a nice moment that reshaped my perspective on his character for basically the rest of the show

Major influencer event soon in Zuzu, Haley's big break as an influencer, needs a plus one for driving and so she doesn't look like a friendless loser (which she actually kind of is, cuz she's too catty to hold down more than Alex and her sister, and Alex is away)

Begs everyone in town before getting to Shane, who only relents cuz money, he recently lost his job at Joja

Makeover part 1 she waxes his eyebrows and its insane and funny cuz he starts bleeding. Shes screaming WHY ARE YOU BLEEDING and hes like IDK WHY DID YOU MAKE ME BLEED and its a fucking mess and we just cut to Emily in the kitchen or something just regretting her entire life and getting up to help

Shopping montage my beloved AND we get a scene where fans recognize her at the mall and Shane begins to see what this is all about and we learn about her online persona and everything

He strongarms her into doing something for him that's just an excuse to make her suffer (like a day of farming) and she DOES she's miserable and covered in mud and breaks a nail, which at first Shane makes fun of her for, but when she starts crying and shows him she's bleeding he flips on a dime to serious and taking care of her

He tells her about a time Jas was hurt because of his negligence and he was beside himself. Discuss alcoholism?

She stays for dinner and the whole family have a little campfire and marshmallows and Jas falls asleep cuddling Haley (she fucking loves Haley cuz she looks like Barbie lol)

Makeover part 2 cuz Shane has been growing out his beard per Haley's requirements and she takes him to an expensive barber to get his hair and beard done, and at last his transformation is complete

D-Day arrives. Haley is super anxious and Shane is kind enough to give her a pep talk about it as they drive to the event.

At the event, the plan was always to ditch Shane if she found someone better. That was part of the reason to bring someone she didn't care about. All she needed him for was a ride and a photo-op before entering.

SHIT GOES DOWN AT THE EVENT (I'm not gonna spoil this one I really want to write it)

My logic behind how their characters fit together: He teaches her about not caring what people think. She teaches him that life doesn't just happen to you, you have to build it for yourself. They both struggle with self-worth in their own ways. Haley bases her self-worth on metrics she believes are objective; like beauty and number of followers. Shane on the other hand is great at not caring what people think, but that's mainly because he's already decided he's worthless.

This is one of my FAVES so far I really hope it makes it to the poll, but that is all up to you guys!

I'm pretty sure Viv has something against siblings. The healthiest sibling release we have is Millie and Sallie-Mae, then we get to Blitzø and Barbie, whose relationship is in shambles. There are moments where characters being each other's siblings could work and make for an interesting dynamic, like the sins. But we get that weird scene with the abomination known as Bee going "Satan isn't TECHNICALLY my brother, so I could fuck him" makes me feel Viv does this to have this weird love drama between any sin of her choosing instead of the sins considering themselves as a septuple of evil (albeit estranged) family. Not to mention when I thought Fizz and Blitz were related before the sexual comments and request to kiss. Idk, there just never seems to be a strong family relationship save for Lucifer and his daughter. It feels like any potential family moments is often brushed aside for petty drama, ANYTHING to make the show interesting.

It makes me fear that in the episode of Helluva Boss where all the sins are seen to gather, it makes me cringe to think that they'll try and make a joke out of Mammon trying to pathetically simp for and try to grab the attention of either Beelzebub or Belphegor because one eats a lot like him, and one presumably likes to lounge.

I don't think Viv has anything against siblings -- she seems to get along with her own fine -- but I do think she sucks at writing and giving characters sincere, believable conflicts. She's just not all that interested in relationships that don't involve dicks being inserted, and only barely interested in attempting to develop the ones where they are.

If home boy cant be hospitalized for more than one episode he isn't dying  

Granted I will allow some leeway as we don’t know how much time has passed since Western Energy to Oops but it- I don’t think stab wounds and broken arms heal that fast regardless of that :/ if I'm being honest especially if it was a holy weapon just saying.  

Even if he did die that brings up a lot of questions like what happens to demons when they die? Are all demons immortal and can only die due to physical damage? are Asmodeus and Beelzebub going to outlive Fizz and Vortex if imps and hellhounds/other demons aren't immortal. Were the 7 deathly sins ever babies like everyone else? If demons are immortal and can live forever and the Ars Goitias can only be killed by angelic weapons that are hard to get, I'm assuming, why do, they need to have children or heirs? Why even have children at all? If angelic weapons can kill demons do demonic weapons exist and can they kill angels or other holy beings?

In when stolas got hurt it was this big thing and for him to just be like fine an episode later is like what? How are you going to have this big emotional climax with no emotional orgasm (sorry) afterwards. And like no I'm not letting this go what the heck? You had the whole fandom screeching about Blizto going to sloth just to do nothing with it and put a twist about Barbie and then also have stolas be perfectly fine and dandy the next episode afterwards. Are there no stakes in this show? Like I get that Helluva Boss wasn’t planned in the beginning but like come on... When Viv approves of the episodes does she look back at the other episodes? Is she even there? Is she ok? Is she and everyone else seeing a bigger picture that I'm not? Has she sat down and watched Helluva Boss from the very beginning and watched them from episode one to now? I mean really not just a once over to send it off to youtube I mean really took a good and hard look at the episodes? The way they mix episodic, and story is really messing with me I'm going to go back and watch all the episodes from the beginning just to make sure it’s not me.

1. Ian and Mickey have saved up enough to take a short vacation. Where are they going?

2. What weird/fun/silly ways do they decorate their West Side apartment?

4. What kind of takeout do they get so regularly that the restaurant knows them by name?

5. Are they still wearing the camo outfits for work? And how many times has Ian gotten distracted by Mickey wearing camo?

1. They bicker about going to various tourist spots around the country for weeks, interspersed with both of them at some point doing the pengu pout and saying Well Now I Just Want A Staycation - until finally Ian asks Mickey to take him to Mexico and show him around. Mickey reminds him he wasn't exactly having a fucking gap year abroad or some shit, and that if Mickey really does "show him around" where Mickey went a lot of those places are going to be dangerous and not strictly legal, and Ian says something unbearably sappy about how that makes it Perfect For Them, so much more than any Normal vacation.

2. I don't know basically anything about the west side place, and I really haven't decided what kind of living situation they end up in as Grown Up grown ups in the secret version with nothing I don't like in it that exists in my head yet. However, I think Mickey is a closet dork, and once he can afford it - both fiscally and emotionally - he starts collecting and displaying nerd shit. Specifically I'm thinking he's into X-Men and also pro wrestling, the latter of which is not exactly dorky in the same way BUT we're counting it here because he observes his affinity for it with the same type of nerd shit. He's got mini-figures (NOT lego, I'm talking like D&D model style minifigs) - wait hold up I was looking at the WWE site for ideas on what Mickey would have and discovered the action figures are Mattel branded. So yeah uh. Mickey gets X-Men and WWE Mattel branded action figures, and then gets force-Barbiepilled by The Algorithm qohugakaogks. ANYWAY. Re: decor, there are LED-lit glass shelves in the living spaces with Mickey's action figures on. Ian got him a "matching" set of Van Damme and Seagal for an anniversary, and they have a place of honor above the TV. Every now and then they will ~mysteriously~ end up posed as if they are fucking; both Ian and Mickey always blame this on the other.

ETA: At some point they're looking after one/some of the various children, and the action figures and Barbies get played with (while Mickey pretends very, very badly to be okay with it until he sends himself out of the room so he doesn't yell). Ian is also not paying attention; kid is being quiet but not too quiet, that's all he cares about. Then, after the kid is gone and things are picked up, they realize the Seagal action figure has been put into a Barbie wedding dress (dON'T ask Mickey why he has that!!). Mickey is quite disgruntled by this, and Ian laughs so hard - at the combo of the actual doll situation and the look on Mickey's face about it - that he almost makes himself sick.

3. I REALLY know nothing about their work, but uhhhh. Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his pie hole.

4. There's this south side taqueria, maybe a hole in the wall or maybe a food truck. Even if/when they do move away to a better area, nothing beats it. Hell, even if they moved out of town entirely, they'd travel for it. I think I want there to be some kind of loyalty there that isn't just for the quality of the food (which is impeccable regardless). Maybe the owner would give one or both of them free food back in the day, or maybe had an opportunity to snitch on them but didn't, or idk their wedding is completely different To Me but there could still be some mishaps and such so maybe this place was the only one that agreed to cater day-of, or Terry like "blacklisted" Mickey from a bunch of locally owned places under Threat Of Terry and this place was one of few that would still serve him, or whatever. Like, the food itself is phenomenal and they'd have already been eating there previous, but then there was some personal element too that made it Their taqueria. They know everyone there by name too.

[a rant about how character hyperfixations are different than special interests, how seeing Hobies makes me feel, and also daydreams that I don't necessarily control]

I love Hobie. He's my hyperfixation.

But it's not like a special interest or normal hyperfixation. Like I love trains and subways and metros and I'll eat up ANYTHING about them but like - the interest is completely from an intellectual standpoint.

My Hobie hyperfixation is completely different.

Bruh I get about as much comfort looking at his photo as I do like hugging my own mother or some shit and that's not an understatement

Especially actual screenshots of the movie. Like I love fanart but for it to hit right it has to be 'actually him'.

Looking at photos of him genuinely calms me down and thinking about his voice makes me feel safe. I trust him.

I can accurately 'daydream' about him doing almost anything in vivid detail, but I'm not necessarily in control of him in those daydreams. There are just certain things he won't do. If I ask him a question I won't know the answer unless I 'ask' him. And if I don't like is answer I can't just change it cause he said what he said!!!

Um but yeah at least for me it's way more than 'Oh I love this character and reading fics about him' and way closer to 'this is somehow a person to me I talk to through my head. And I can feel the same warm feelings towards him as I do an actual existing human.

I know I can't touch him or hug him - and that gives the exact same emotion as if you were missing a friend that went away to college.

I know it's not the same, but my brain produces the same feeling from different scenarios than other people.

Like just by looking at this photo I can imagine the way his vest feels and what is like to hold his hand, and the fabric of his shirt, the way he smells, his guitar by my leg - and it's like ... I'm not trying to do that that's just what happens when I look at the photo

AND I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT ANY OTHER WAY OR ANY CLEARER AND I-

At least twice I week I have a daydream of Hobie rubbing my back and telling me to calm down and how he understands why I'm upset all in his accent in a very specific detailed rendition of his home thats never been shown on screen before-

At the end of his rambling, he had that same lovestruck appearance on his face as he rested his jaw on his fist, gazing at you.

That's the kind of look you wish he'd give you instead.

"Yeah, that would be cool." Once more, you agreed, before taking your guitar out of its case and placing it across your lap. "Well..I'm just gonna start practicing."

"Right. Thanks for listening, [y/n]. I'm just gonna sleep over here and dream of our future." He stood up and walked about ten steps towards a baby blue towel somebody left behind in the sand, laying down and curling up. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Ken. Sleep well."

Despite how uncomfortable he seemed, he had no problems dozing off as you heard light snores mere seconds after he closed his eyes. You saw a content smile gracing his lips and gazed at him for some time.

He never looked more peaceful.

"This one's for you.." You whispered softly, fingers gliding across the guitar strings as you began playing a song you've recently memorized.

Then you began singing ever-so quietly, closing your eyes and feeling the music flow through you.

You knew that he'd always choose Barbie over you at the end of the day, even though you've seen her reject him time and time again. He still kept chasing after her no matter what, always hoping she'll one day say "yes" to him staying over at her dreamhouse instead of shooing him away.

Eventually, he'd have to wake up and realize the truth.

Maybe then he'll finally see that you were the only one who ever gave him the time of day. The only one who truly cared about where he slept, if he was okay, etc.

The only one who truly loved him.

Perhaps in another life, it can be [Y/n] and Ken.

But for now, you just continued playing the guitar at him, even though he was off in dreamland, blissfully unaware that you were speaking to him through this song you were singing.

i don't understand why with the modern retellings of fairytales no one has done rapunzel? there's been a growing trend in wanting to have 'darker' fairytales, or to deconstruct or explore the original stories. but a rapunzel adaptation would be able to do this so well!

compared to other fairytale's and princesses, rapunzel isn't in many adaptations. think of how many different versions of cinderella, snow white, beauty and the beast or peter pan there are (obviously varying in quality lmao)

it's honestly endless!

but rapunzel has very few adaptations:

there are two major movies: 'barbie rapunzel' and 'tangled',

rapunzel is a character in the musical 'into the woods', which also became a movie

one major tv series which is the tangled spinoff 'rapunzel's tangled adventure'

even in stories that combine many fairytales, rapunzel is rarely in them - being a minor villain in 'shrek the third', and as a minor character appearing in one episode of 'once upon a time' in season 3, and then a different version of rapunzel appears in season 7 as a villain who is also lady tremaine (idk i didn't write it)

so there's a lot of potential to explore the story more, especially considering no adaptation has ever gone into the original story (into the woods would be the most similar, but the ending is quite different and rapunzel's not a major character in the musical) and that most versions of rapunzel so far have been for younger audiences.

even just the basic premise of the original story would fit a darker fairytale - a girl is raised in isolation, kept in a tower with no doors or ways to leave and her only company is the abusive woman who raises her, telling the girl she is being kept safe from the outside world. not to mention the other elements of the original story that would be interesting to see portrayed onscreen or be interpreted in different ways - a baby being bartered, rapunzel banished by the woman who raised her for being pregnant, the prince is pushed from the tower and is blinded by thorns, in some versions the witch ends up trapped in the tower herself, etc.

there's a lot of elements there that would make for a fascinating, darker version then what we've seen.

in some of the earlier concept art for tangled, rapunzel is portrayed as much more wild:

which makes a lot of sense!

barbie rapunzel, tangled and into the woods went for a route of rapunzel being sweet, sheltered and naive, which was fuelled by the witch's manipulations. depending on the version, the witch treats rapunzel as a daughter, an indentured servant, or a mix of the two.

but there could be a version of the story where rapunzel is left more to her own devices. or models herself more after the witch - the only person she's ever known. or where her learnt fear of the outside world leads her to want to protect herself against these dangers.

it would be also interesting (as well as pretty heartbreaking) to look into how rapunzel would feel after knowing that her entire life was a lie. that the woman she obeyed and cared about was using her and lied to her. how rapunzel would interact with a world she's never known, but always been taught to fear. and if the story has rapunzel and the prince separated for a time (some versions for years), what would rapunzel's life be like - pregnant and alone and in the world for the first time?

and then there's the prince!

he hears rapunzel singing in the woods and is captivated, but can't get up into her tower, but comes back to listen to her every day. and after he secretly watches how the witch gets into the tower, he calls for rapunzel to let down her hair and climbs up himself. and then they... fall in love and secretly get married.

that part is always glossed over.

it could be a really beautiful love story - a lonely soul who spends most of his time wandering alone in the woods basically hears a siren song and is determined to meet the singer. rapunzel, who's only ever known abuse, meets a genuinely kind person who wants to show her the world. he comes back every day with a strand of silk for rapunzel to make a ladder so that she can be free. after they're separated the now blind prince wanders in search of her, eventually hearing her singing again and that's how they're reunited.

it could also be quite terrifying - a man becomes obsessed with a girl he barely knows, tricks her into letting him into her home, she has no relationship experience (or experience with people at all) and is just as isolated with him as she is with the witch. they get married in secret and she gets pregnant and is punished by the witch for it.

it could even be some version of the two - the prince being captivated by her song, but also drawn to the one thing he can't have (the girl in the tower). but rapunzel being wild when he meets her and him having to slowly earn her trust and respect, and genuinely wanting her to be free of her tower prison.

any adaptation would have to be careful with the character of the witch though - often called gothel, to not fall into antisemetic tropes.

the article 'antisemetism in children's media' explains the harmful ways villains are often jewish-coded:

"[Mother Gothel] was originally drawn as an elegant caucasian looking woman, only to be edited to look like a stereotypical Ashkenazi Jew, presumably as a means to appear more “evil”. Gothel is animated with a hooked nose, and coarse, black curly hair – all aspects commonly seen in antisemetic caricatures. Though these features on a villain alone are shocking enough, what is most terrifying about Gothel’s portrayal is the obvious use of Blood Libel tropes. This can be described as a false belief that Jews kidnap and murder young Christian children in order to perform religious rituals (often associated with Manischewitz wine and matzah). Sound familiar? That’s because it is thinly veiled in Gothel’s portrayal. In Tangled, the main character Rapunzel is portrayed as a young innocent white girl, who is kidnapped by the Jewish villain, who uses Rapunzel’s magical essence to make herself appear younger. What is the laziest attempt at villainizing Jews in this character, and possibly the most hurtful however, is that Gothel is a common jewish surname."

it's awful, and unfortunately something that's been present in many iterations of gothel over the years (as well as other fairytales and witch caricatures)

a solution to this is to not having the witch be jewish coded. her name doesn't have to be gothel, she does not have to have stereotypical or exaggerated features, and rapunzel doesn't even have to be white

but having a focus be on the witch and her relationship to rapunzel is key - because unlike many other fairytale villains, the witch raises rapunzel. in many versions she's the only human contact rapunzel has ever had, or in the versions where rapunzel is locked in the tower as a pre-teen, the witch is the only person she's seen in many years.

the witch's motivations for locking rapunzel away are also important for their relationship and the story:

the original fairytale and into the woods has the witch want to punish her neighbour for stealing from her garden, and wanting a child of her own

barbie rapunzel has a twist on this, gothel was in love with king wilhelm, and when he did not return her love, she kidnapped his daughter rapunzel and framed the neighbouring kingdom, causing the two to go to war.

tangled has gothel using a magic flower for eternal youth, but after the kingdom uses the flower to save the queen & unborn princess, gothel kidnaps the baby in order to stay alive and keep the magic now in rapunzel for herself

this would be a really interesting approach for the character that hasn't been done before. someone who truly believes that she is protecting the child, but is really the one doing all the damage. having the character be inspired by nuns/convents would also work well, as a lot of the techniques gothel uses line up with abusive nuns - isolation, guilt, emotional/physical abuse, and the treatment of rapunzel after the witch finds out she's pregnant. it also flips the head on the often antisemetic coding of the witch

depending on the version made there are a lot of possibilities for endings:

rapunzel having to brave the world alone and pregnant

rapunzel and the prince being reunited - but have days, weeks, months or years gone by? do they ever meet again?

meeting the prince again going differently if it's the terrifying version where he was using rapunzel just like the witch, only in a different way. maybe he wants nothing to do with her or the babies, maybe he pretends they never met at all. how would rapunzel's story change then?

is rapunzel ever reunited with her birth parents? does she want to be?

the ending could be darker, bittersweet, or end on an optimistic note

all this to say that rapunzel is a story with so much potential, and i would love to see it brought to life in more ways - with different genres or interpretations and taking more from the original story.

with the amount of random, unnecessary remakes that are being made - wouldn't a familiar fairytale told in a new way be more interesting?

What did you think about Barbie?

I remember someone on twt predicted that Ken would bring misogyny and the patriarchy back to barbieland and I was like what no that's absurd, Mattel is the villain duh BUT NOPE-

That whole thing really threw me. There's honestly so much I want to say about the movie and idk how to even start tbh 😭 I really did not expect to come out of Barbie teary eyed because Barbie had an existential crisis! Just so many themes that made me emotional but especially the whole "your mom is just a girl" thing. Barbie's crisis being brought on because America's character missed playing barbie with her teenage daughter and was going through some heavy emotional stuff due to having to keep it together all the time made me sad.

Seeing Barbie herself be insecure because she's stereotypical Barbie and therefore doesn't fly jets or perform surgeries or win presidencies, etc like the other Barbies made me sad for her because she's the first Barbie. The stereotypical Barbie. That was her one job and without that she felt like nothing! But she isn't nothing! She has a purpose and I especially loved that her whole thing with Ken was that they are their own individuals. I don't understand how men didn't get that tbh. The whole message surrounding the Kens was that it's not Barbie and Ken. It's Barbie. And...it's Ken. Ken has his own identity outside of Barbie and I loved that so much.

The scene where Barbie decides if she wants to be human and she's just experiencing a brief montage of what it's like to be a woman with the crying and laughing and pain and love and heartache and whatnot almost got me. My friend was crying but I was wearing way too much makeup so I resisted but it was just so beautiful to me and she didn't hesitate to become human. This movie just made me more emotional than I expected

Heavy stuff aside, it was also hilarious. Greta is a genius. She handled so much stuff so well and the bit about "casting Margot Robbie to make this point isn't the best choice" had me howling because I lowkey agreed. Like yeah stereotypical Barbie is having an identity crisis because she doesn't feel pretty anymore but babe...you're still Margot Robbie 😭 her coming to the real world was both horrifying and funny. The realization that the real world is nothing like barbieland was heartbreaking and 😬😬😬 like yeah girl. The construction site is full of men and that feeling you're getting? It's from men leering at you. Meanwhile Ken was feeling all kinds of respected and validated 😭 anyways
