The idea of m/f ships where, in the most basic terms, a male villain is paired with a female hero has captured the imagination of many and will continue to do so despite all the pearl clutching and opposition to it on the grounds of it being problematic and what not. A simple reason is that this trope, if it can be termed as one, is considered by many to be thoroughly addictive and entertaining.
What it needs, in order to be done right, is one specific ingredient: The female character must be as fleshed out and nuanced as possible. She must possess individuality and her personality must standout, regardless of what role she has to play. She must have aspirations and motivations, be it small or big. She must keep evolving with the plot instead of remaining static. Her thoughts, actions and reactions must be coherent to the plot and her characterization. Her presence must be acknowledged at all costs. Likeable or not, her existence must not be overlooked, much less forgotten.
The finest 'problematic' ships, from my experience, are those in which the audience and/or readers feel compelled to understand and be invested in both parties, albeit in different degrees.
#insisting that all female characters stick with the nice safe option to be 'protected' from perceived danger is no solution#it never was#fictional characters#general#fiction#vegebul#gilsaber#eremika#saurondriel#shipping#zutara#oshamir#ellen x orlok#kastle#captainswan#spuffy#snowbaird#zervis#heathcliff x catherine#jane x rochester#delena#klamille#basically every klaus ship#proship

listen. there are a number of aspects in which c3 and divergence are not comparable and fundamentally work differently (namely the difference in construction between a long-form campaign and 4-part mini-series), but thematically? not only are they comparable, they are designed to be. divergence is being aired directly after the conclusion of c3 in order to further explore concepts introduced in its conclusion. a world with less connection to the gods, the effect of that on the faithful, how the average exandrian approaches the concept of faith in general (in multiple aspects), the connection between the divine and their mortal children, burgeoning hope from post-war darkness, etc. these are concepts we're being asked to compare with the finale of c3. so if someone says that divergence's handling of faith and exploration of the gods blows c3's out of the water, that's valid. if we were meant to be avoiding comparisons, a) they wouldn't have aired this immediately after c3, b) there wouldn't be so many overlapping concepts, and c) they wouldn't be holding off on having the wrap-up until divergence is over. divergence is in conversation with c3, actively and intentionally, and it puts a stark contrast on how poorly faith was handled in c3, but also things like. understanding character motivation. which yes, is going to shine more strongly in short-form content because you have to get the information out quickly, but is a valid thing to discuss if you genuinely feel you understand a short-form campaign character's goals better than you do a character you spent 4 years watching. it's the difference between a woman who has never been shown to seriously engage with the gods at all stating "i don't know if i want to save gods that don't love me" and the moonweaver saying "if the love is true, it will pass through the barrier" and us knowing that divine magic will continue to be granted to mortals, by the sheer love the primes hold for their children, complex as that love might be. and, fundamentally, divergence is an exploration of consequences. the consequences of the calamity on mortals and the gods and the earth itself, decimated as it is. so when people compare it to c3, when a major complaint of the campaign was lack of follow-through and exploration of consequences, divergence shines for being about exactly what a lot of people felt c3 was missing.
#there's something to be said about divergence being used as a method to explore c3's consequences outside the context of c3#and like. not positively. because it betrays bh's ignorance of history and lack of curiosity in actually exploring either the gods'#or the common people's opinions. the moonweaver declares that the divine gate will protect exandria from any god touching it#ever again#and bh made it so that they ALL would touch exandria again. divergence shows how mortaldom could be a major boon for the gods#but also betrays how dangerous it inevitably will be for common mortals to live in a world with direct divine intervention again#by drawing comparisons it kind of feels like c3 has undone the protections put in place here. hence casting them in a negative light#and sure turning the gods mortal is the best solution that bh had at the time sure. but it is UNFORGETTABLE#that there was a way to outright kill predathos that was never so much as alluded to in the text of the campaign#unforgettable. jesus.#cr spoilers#also imo if you're like 'you can have an opinion just don't state it like a fact' you are stupid and have never read an opinion before ig#stated like a fact. well it is in fact my opinion so i'm going to state it like a fact. because it is to me#anyway#cr tag

The only correct form of caltam, as far as i am concerned
#tw: opinions#at times whenever the topic of caltam comes up i am left wondering if i played the same game as others#i don't think enough ppl dig in to Cal's and Tammy's characters to realize just how horribly uncompatible they are as a couple#“they're perfect for each other”#bitch where#if their relationship wouldn't be so unwritten they would be having screaming matches from 15 onwards#Tammy is married to a fairytale view of love and princesses and princes and if you looked for atleast a minute at Cal's character you'd#realize he's NOT that type of person#they bud heads on a lot of significant things that play a major role to their characters such as Tammy's protectiveness over the creche kid#and her future family and desire to be protected and stood up for and Cal unyileding view of radical pacifism and hypocritism#i am not trying to be funny when i say i could seriously write a whole ass 10+ page essay on why they're not good for each other#ppl don't realize they look at each other through rose-colored glasses and that they like the IDEA of each other not the actual them#bc of how they grew up and used to see each other. Bishop's logical jumps are so funny to me sometimes because like you can clearly assume that there's something in between but the show really doesn't say how he reaches his conclusions.
For example, in Bishop's Gambit he talks about how the EPF was founded to protect from aliens, which are becoming a bigger and bigger threat to Earth. Okay, that's fair, this is probably like a month after the Triceraton invasion so the concept of "aliens are out to get us" is supported by the fact that Earth literally just got invaded by aliens for no clear reason. So what's Bishop's next step?
Making a clone army of super soldiers based on his DNA that will fight the aliens. Obviously. Can't you see the clear logical progression there.
#bambi's rambling#tmnt 2003#2003 bishop#the funniest part is that he clearly already had the clones program up and running before the invasion actually occurred#and yeah there's later information that comes in that helps make the actual connection there a little clearer#(like the fact that bishop's DNA is uniquely suited for cloning so you'd probably get a lot more viable specimens that way)#and you know what? super soldiers to fight aliens seems relatively reasonable in context#you dont know how aliens are gonna fight but it feels safe to assume that they'd be more powerful than humans it shows up in fiction a *lot#but like. how did he get to 'the most logical solution here is a clone army'#bishop. bishop what was your thought process there exactly#(obviously it probably has something to do with clones being easier to control than regular soldiers but this is a joke post lmao)#anyway second funniest part is that for all his talk about protecting earth from aliens he was doing jack shit during the invasion itself#sir you were Not protecting the earth at all. you barely did anything

if i failed to protect my kid during the apocalypse and they almost died wandering on their own but got rescued by a team of four competent, battle-experienced adults who cared about them very much and made them feel less scared and useless but refused to let them fight, i think that would be a pretty decent outcome and i'd be pretty okay with it. sure i could dream up a better situation but there's a hell of a lot of worse ones too.
#it's not like they took bonnie away from a safe lil village.. bonnie was on the verge of collapse!!#and no village is safe!!!!#better traveling to the place that will be last to freeze than left at some village that will freeze sooner#(and we can guess than nille agrees‚ since she and bonnie did not wait in bambouche to be frozen)#better ready for battle behind a team of fighters than caught unawares among people who have never fought#(regular people are obviously struggling right now - even nille failed to protect bonnie)#even with the king#if the party fails the land is frozen ANYWAY#is it really better to leave bonnie in dormont? distraught‚ abandoned? being held back from following by strangers?#is that really a better moment to be stuck in for eternity?#yeah maybe something worse would happen in the house#but sadnesses could attack the village too!#taking bonnie with them is absolutely a reasonable decision given all of the circumstances#i may be biased by my own nille characterization#HOWEVER#this is also my opinion as a parent u^u#like i might still be freaking out about it#but htat's. inevitable no matter WHAT it is that happened#bonnie WAS stuck in a bad situation and even the best solutions can't undo that#so yeah i'd be WORRIED#but i'd also be grateful the people who found my kid were decent folks who tried their best and did quite well all things considered#😭😭😭😭#thoughts#thoughts about bonnie#isat talk#i'm sick of not being able to fandom tag my posts that i don't want to put in the fandom tag so there now it's filterable lol

Anyway if you really wanna see me go off later remind me to talk about the fucking assholes trying to blame economic problems on immigration rather than the temporary foreign worker permits because I learned about that last week and I am MAD
Wild how literally every problem plaguing Canada at the moment boils down to corporations saying “hey would you mind if we just don’t follow these labour laws” and the government saying “yeah sure”
Fucking absurd
(Short form: immigrants pay taxes and contribute to the local economy and are basically free adults and workers you did not have to pay childcare or wait for them to grow up and are great
Temporary foreign worker permits were issued to bail out companies who “couldn’t find” local labour - because they refused to offer reasonable wages or benefits, or just plain didn’t want to risk Canadians calling out unsafe labour practices - and let them “temporarily” bring in people from other countries who do not know our labour laws and would accept worse conditions
They’re also not allowed to properly apply for permanent visas and shit to become immigrants because The Bullshit™️ levels are off the fucking charts. Come over to be exploited but oh you’re not allowed to stay?
This is why no one could find a job despite all the places “hiring” in 2022 and SO MANY companies are finally being fined for abusing the system but not enough to make them fucking stop)
#politics#canadian politics#The Economy™️ and other bullshit#the canada post strike too#contractors don’t get labour protections#and thus using employees with rights cannot compete in cost#because they have Fucking Rights#the solution is to give contractors and gig workers fucking rights btw and if uber folds let them fucking fold

~ Batman (1940)
BRUCE, DID YOU KIDNAPPED JASON?!
He picked up the kid and just didn't try to get guardianship? Like, "Who cares about the law? He's my baby now." Also, he is the most generous benefactor of Gotham CPS, his worst enemy.
The cut from "Jason Todd is illegally residing under Bruce Wayne's roof-- and may be presumed to be receiving less than the proper parental care." to Bruce watching Jason sleeping thinking about how much he wants to protect him, be there for him and keep him safe "well beyond the reach of nightmares", that's art. Like, they are like "The kid is probably being abused as we speak", and it cuts to Bruce being like "I will fight his nightmares. Like, physically. He should never be hurt, EVER!"
#bruce wayne#jason todd#batfam#batman#robin#dc comics#my ramblings#“I want to protect you even against your nightmare” and people say Jason was just a soldier#sure it's pre-crisis but idc I mix the two continuity together#Bruce had such a bad time with cps the first time he didn’t even called them this time#which is not a good solution bu it's so funny#CPS: “where does the kid come from?” Bruce: “I gave birth to him” CPS: “He is 12.”

...about that blog
It’s been bothering me for days why this blog feels so familiar, and today it finally hit me.
That confessions blog? It’s using the same techniques as incel chan boards or reddit subs. The same techniques to get increasingly viler the longer it goes on.
They are completely anonymous by choice, there’s no way of telling which contributor is the same as the one prior. There could be one, there could be a hundred and one. It doesn’t matter because the effect is the same.
The people contributing to this blog don’t believe what they’re saying, they’re simply trying on these opinions to defend them, so they can see if they align with those ideologies.
This insulates them from ever having to own or take responsibility for the rhetoric that’s being spewed there. They’re not misogynistic, they’re not ageist, they are simply “trying on” these opinions, they don’t actually believe them.
Schrodinger’s assholes. Whether or not they mean these opinions is based solely on the backlash and reaction they get. They get a negative reaction? Oh, that’s not what they meant, and they can “try on” a different opinion until they get to the acceptable level of misogyny that’s comfortable in that space.
They never have to investigate what the core values of these opinions are, or why they might hold them, or if they’re damaging. It’s all surface level “opinions” so if people are hurt by them, then that’s their issue, because they don’t believe they are being misogynistic, they’re just trying it on for size.
I don’t have an answer, except to say because they’re hiding behind the cloak of anonymity, that cloak veils them from understanding the harm that they can cause. Because they aren’t misogynists, they can’t be hurting people.
This is just my opinion, and I cant say for certain that’s what these people believe, but I can say that from what I saw before blocking that blog, it will only continue to incrementally push the rhetoric further until they reveal themselves the misogynistic, hateful ideals they’re pretending they aren’t. their audience will get smaller and smaller as they alienate people piece by piece until everyone that isn’t “them” is an “other”.
Supporting those who have been affected, as opposed to attempting to change minds is the only way I can see to “take their hats” off so to speak. You don’t owe it to them to prove you aren’t what they’re claiming you are. You owe it to yourself to protect your peace, protect your space, and protect yourself.
#I don't have a solution#nor am i claiming to#and i know that posting this can have the potential to paint a target#and that's ok#because i've always been about protecting my peace

it's funny. I keep making all these posts defending Aziraphale and it's because there's this annoying trend in the fandom to villainize him while simultaneously woobifying Crowley, so there's a need for more Aziraphale perspective
but I was thinking, if we stopped looking at fandom for a minute, and just regarded Aziraphale as a character, how would I criticize him or his choices?
then I realized I wouldn't cos my wife did nothing wrong in her life
#joking? ish?#idk man#like the biggest sticking points are what?#he wanted to change crowley and he abandoned crowley#both of which are just wrong#there was never another option for aziraphale#if you look closely at his character arc you'd realize so#he's a protector first and foremost#but alright you say he shouldn't have gone back to heaven anyway#and what?#try to protect humanity by egging on a bunch of 12 year olds again?#stand by and watch other angels be horribly treated?#and watch humans' lives be toyed with?#like seriously what was he supposed to do?#im genuinely asking here.#even if he didn't offer to change crowley even if crowley could tag along to help him#while remaining a demon#CROWLEY STILL WOULDN'T HAVE SAID YES#so. the solution is for him to just sit tight? and watch the world end when he could've stopped it from a position of power?#yeah great#maybe i wasn't joking after all#sary rants

do u have any navi thoughts from your oot replay
i've been waiting to answer this until I actually beat the game in my current playthrough because navi is another one of those characters that i think of in like a "set" with several other characters who serve relatively the same thematic purpose; in this case that purpose being the "mother" character, and i wanted to have all the characters in that set fresh in my mind. it's notable that while oot shows us very clear and consistent instances of the ways in which the adults of hyrule fail to protect their children, there ARE several adults who DO go out of their way to both oppose ganondorf and protect and nurture the children under their care. All of these characters are adult women, and all of them explicitly help the children out of some sort of parental responsibility or sense of duty towards them. in this group I include link's late mother, impa, nabooru, and navi.
all 4 mother characters, despite being adults or adult-coded, reject the inaction mentality which characterizes other adults in the game. they become either direct supports or shields to their children from the conflict the world has to offer them, and they are always explicitly punished for their interference--link's mother is killed trying to protect her son, impa's village is burned, nabooru is brainwashed. The mother's fatal flaw is that she will protect her child above all else, even in a world in which children cannot truly be protected. however, with the exception of link's mother, these characters manage to persist even in the face of her punishment, and this is where I think navi becomes the exemplary character.
Navi, after a lifetime of being link's only support system, the only adult in his life he could truly, consistently count on, receives her punishment at the hands of ganondorf--in the final battle, she is pushed out. she is unable to reach her child. she cannot protect him. However, BECAUSE link has grown up with her at his side, he is strong enough to take ganondorf down. and when ganon rises again, navi is there to support link, promising not to leave his side, and the intuitive targeting of that battle (a mechanic which navi is inherently tied to!!) makes it a cinch to win. Navi, and the other mothers we meet, are a reminder to the player that the world doesn't HAVE to be the way it is. Their persistence when punished, their insistence that their children ought to be protected, is a reminder that good adults do exist, and that good adults raise good children. link and zelda are able to win in spite of the adults who refused to help them, but also BECAUSE of the adults who DID. It's a reinforcement of the core theme of oot--that childlike idea that the world SHOULD be good and fair and if it isn't, it should be changed until it is. The mothers of oot are examples of what the world COULD be, reminders that it is possible to grow up without losing hope or growing bitter, and they are examples of the next step for the children they've raised to change the word--to continue fighting even in the face of punishment, to refuse inaction, and to foster that same hope and persistence in the generations to come.
#one thing i've really been noticing this time around is the specific way in which navi's targeting works#because even though other 3d games have that targeting mechanic navi's targeting is noticeably different#in two ways. the first being that she specifically targets weak spots in enemies almost as if she is pointing them out to link#and the second being that she is capable of targeting things link himself doesn't see#whether it be invisible enemies or triggers that are out of his reach or scarecrow points or whatever#it's really reminiscent to me of the way you teach problem solving skills to a kid. you see them struggling with something and beginning to#get frustrated and you say 'hey let's look around. do you see any solutions?' and if they can't see the solution themself you might point#and say 'hey what's that?' just to get their attention on it and help facilitate that train of thought for them#because like in most other games targeting is sort of assumed to be link's own intuition in battle#and therefore it will usually allow you to focus on one enemy within a swarm of them but it won't explicitly light up the weak spot for you#navi does that for link because she's essentially the mother teaching her kid how to problem-solve.#and when she's taken away in the final battle link is able to fight anyway BECAUSE she put so much time and effort into raising him#that he no longer needs her to facilitate that problem-solving process. he already knows how to beat ganondorf#because he's done it with her before. and that's exactly the mother's role in her child's life#protect him and raise him as best you can so that when you can no longer be by his side he isn't afraid.#foster that sense of justice and encourage him to keep fighting to change the world even when it seems unchangeable.#god. ocarina of fucking time#zelda analysis#asks
