Okay so what the actual fuck is the story? Do you have eyes or did you not read it yourself? Did you not pass your high school english analysis classes?? Like do you need me to give you a summary or something?😂 bc I can summarize it if you want! It’s about 2 people that are incredibly vulnerable and scared of being in love realizing that they are falling in love. It’s about a boy who’s always been bullied and hated by his whole family, so much so that he hates himself and doesn’t think he deserves anything good, OC included. Does that push him to be a “dick” to her to a certain extent? Maybe. Is he scared of standing up to his family? Totally, yes. All he’s ever wanted was their approval but they’ve always just hated him. Also please remember that these characters are 20 and 22 they aren’t going to be super mature either😂

Now about OC, as we just found out, her father was absent all her life so hello daddy issues. The only guy she ever really got close to was Sam Hwang, and we know how much of a dick he was so that doesn’t help either. She’s also the kind of person that just wants to be there for the people she cares about, as we’ll get to see more in the upcoming chapters with her friends. Furthermore, please let me know when Jungkook played her bc he’s never actually played her at all😂 homie is a huge ass simp that is just afraid to confess it like how can you miss the point so badly??

a note on the vol 25 cover \\ mini analysis

so, regarding fyodor!

as we can see, fyodor is holding a black chess piece. it doesnt look like a rook, a knight, or a pawn. although it may be a queen, for the sake of this theory im going to assume that it is the king piece. (also, im going to ignore like every little bit of actual chess rules for this adladlksjrl)

the volume will cover the chapters 110-112 (i think), so its likely that this is only 'foreshadowing' (of course, what im going to cover here is the most recent events, in chaps 114-114.5 as its already happened its just not in this volume)

now then, from the vol 16 colored spread, we can see that fyodor is the black side.

so, it doesnt mean that hes put dazai in checkmate.

however, lets talk about what the king does in chess.

has very little mobility, is what decides the game, and is on the same 'side ' as fyodor, being the black king. who fits the bill?

thats right, its bram!

so, my little interpretation is that fyodor holding the black king in this cover is symbolic of how he will overtake brams body very soon after the events of this volume.

now then, moving on to dazai!!

so, this cover very reasonably gave almost everybody a big scare ;w; but i dont think it means that dazai will die. in the first few chapters included in this volume, dazai is presumed to be dead right after chuuya shot him. so i rlly think theyre just playing us but who knows,,,

anyway, red camellias which are shown on dazai here can mean deep desire/love, noble death, and are known to be incredibly rare (I THINK). i feel like its mostly about dazais personality (as his view of the world is 'rare' and he sorta maybe 'died' a noble death in 109 but thats debatable) and the fact that chuuya was the one to shoot him (as skk have been associated with the flowers before [if that official art was actually real idk anymore])

another interesting thing is that dazai is in his ada outfit here, while in his appearance in vol 22's cover he was in his prison outfit. either its foreshadowing for a symbolic death of agency dazai or just meant to signal the end of the prison arc as we enter a new era of the story.

the presence of the swords and the complete lack of empty space in the volume cover displays how the tripolar singularity which occurs very soon after this completely shifts the world i think !

moving on, we can see atsushis human foot and his tiger foot (and his belt) in this volume cover but not his face. all the other previous covers show more of him, and assumedly this is showing how the focus is shifting away from him as a person.

now, fukuzawa and fukuchi.

fukuzawa has a white backdrop while fukuchi has black, this could symbolize fukuchi who is dead while fukuzawa isnt but i see it more as their two somewhat extreme views on justice and how it polarizes them. they are back to back, their hair almost melding into one singular person showing that they both want to do whats right, but their associated colors and the swords show their differences.

fyodor sits between them, almost separating them, and showing how little we still understand about his true moral standing. (also, fyodor radiates black that is actually even darker than fukuchi's showing how, as karma said in his debut chapter, fyodor transcends evil.)

the red speckles may symbolize the tripolar singularity, and the cracks on the bottom of fukuchi and fukuzawa's sections could show the singularity's shattering of concrete morality and that which is real/is not.

atsushi and dazai are both in the area with the water, which may also symbolize how the singularity will flush out the past and bring fyodor's idea of purity closer to reality. atsushi and dazai being placed in the water shows how they are the ones who will make change (as atsushi can cut through the fabric of abilities using his tiger claws, and dazai nullifies abilities).

Chapter 2: Journal 4: Dipper starts writing his own journal (Ford probs gives him a blank one) ala what the end of Journal 3 implies

Chapter 3: Prior Engagement: Soos and Melody get engaged?? I think?

Chapter 4: Gravity Falls Noir: A Noir mystery story idk about what tho, mostly for fun

Chapter 5: Film Festival: Everyone teams up to make short films for a film festival

Chapter 6: Normal Kideon: Gideon (now reformed) asks the MK's help in teaching him how to not be a fucking little meglomaniac

Chapter 7: Techromancy: Something featuring Ford and Fiddleford and Peridot idk what

Chapter 12: Back Into the Bunker: Return to the bunker, this time with Ford and Fiddleford, basically a flashback on how Rose and the Gems helped them build it

Chapter 13: Summer Snowfall: Fuckin snows in Gravity Falls, its basically just swinter iidk winter hijinks

Chapter 14: Monster Shack: Return of the Monster Falls designs idk how I just wanted to see them again, would have probs featured Monster Stevonnie, Maven, and Stepper bc im obsessed

Chapter 15: Revenge Tour: Stan and Amethyst up to illegal hijinks again, this time roping Wendy and mabel Lapis in?

Chapter 16: A Shoulder to Cry On: Steven/Pacifica fusion, Connie and Dipper are jealous little shits

Chapter 17: A Pines Bros Mystery: Flashback chapter adapting the chapter of the same name from Lost Legends focusing on the young Stan Twins

Chapter 18: Steven's Dream: Same as the show, the gang goes to fucking Korea I guess (said gang including all four of the Pines)

Chapter 24: Alternate Ending: Same as the ep, Steven imagining what it would be like if he did have a sister bc he's a lil jealous of Dipper and Mabel's dynamic

Chapter 25: Alone in the Woods: Something Dipper and Lapis related??? idk

Chapter 26: Doug Out: Same as the show more or less, Aquamarine and Topaz fuckiin around

Chapter 27: Brotherly Shove: Stan and Ford focused, probs would have resulted in them both getting captured by Aqua and Topz

Chapter 28: Are You My Dad: Same as the show, more GF characters captured alongside the SU characters

Chapter 29: I Am My Mom: Same as canon, but with Dipper and Mabel getting taken to Homeworld with Steven and Lars, would have also included Stuck Together

Chapter 30: The Trial: Same as canon, more implications of Rose being a Shady Bitch who worked with Bill in the past; ends with Dipper pulling a self sacrifice essentially so Steven and Mabel can escape, thus officially kickstarting the Stonemason arc

Chapter 30: Wanted: Mabel and Steven desperately trying to find a way to save Dipper, Lars fucking dies, Maven maybe shows up? The kiddos go home and break the bad news that they're now one short oop

Arc 4: Stonemason Unmasked

Chapter 31: Within Without: Aftermath of the Wanted arc, Pines family is a fucking mess, not even knowing if Dipper is still fucking alive; Steven is a guilt ridden disaster

Chapter 32: Gemcation: The gems take everyone on a trip to try and both cool down and strategize; Stan and Ford get into a fight bc they're stressed, everything is bad

Chapter 33: Kevin Party: More or less same but Kevin wants Stevonnie, Maven, and Stepper at his party (lol kinda impossible for that last one atm imo); Mabel runs into Gabe Bensen at the party and tells him to fuck off, feeling guilt once again for the events of Sock Opera especially now that Dipper is gone

Chapter 34: Shipping and Handling: I think this was gonna focus on Pacifica's feelings about Dipper being missing? Was probs gonna be sad as fuck tbh this entire arc was

Chapter 35: Lars of the Stars: Same but with Mabel trying to convince Lars and the Off Colors to take them back to Homeworld so they can look for Dipper; they don't get far before Emerald attacks tho

Chapter 36: Jungle Moon: Same as before but this time it has a subplot with Mabel being lost on her own on the Jungle Moon, and her first encounter with Stonemason (she doesn't realize who he is yet)

Chapter 36: Sweater Sewing: Gang is back on earth, more focused on Mabel's huge well of emotions about missing Dipper, writing him letters so she can fill him in on everything once they find him/her doubting if they will

Chapter 37: Mindless Education: All our remaining MK have Angst for days and fusion aint gonna help them work through it this time, basically, the MK aren't complete with Dipper ahahah

Chapter 38: The Assassin: Stonemason officially arrives in Gravity Falls and fights the Gems (they still dont know who he is yet)

Chapter 39: The Mask: Second encounter with Stonemason, ends with the dramatic face reveal ahahaha

Chapter 40: Stonemason Unmasked (p1 and p2): deadass just retelling how Dipper wound up as Stonemason in full, introduces Amber and shows how he lost his arm, was conditioned/brainwashed, etc. Was gonna be told as a series of vingette scenes

Arc 5: Break the Chain

Chapter 41: Show Yourself: Reactions to Stonemason's real identity, failed attempts from the Pines and the Gems to basically break Dipper out of the brainwashing I guess

Chapter 42: Deep Cut: Outright fucking war between the Stans and the Gems basically with the Stans blaming the Gems for what's happened to Dipper and Steven and Mabel trying their best to get them to reconcile and work together

Chapter 42: Lullaby: Probs Stonemason focused, showing that Dipper is still in there and is trying to break free but cant bc of YD's conditioning

Chapter 43: Puppet Strings: Bill fuckin returns after like 40 chapters, absolutely taking advantage of this fucked up situation to try and broker a deal with Steven. it doesn't work. Yet

Chapter 44: Crash and Burn: Stonemason attacks Gravity Falls directly, without the mask which will have huge repercussions later

Chapter 45: Forever Together: Maven focused; they go off on their own to try and track down Stonemason, probably having an emotional breakdown or two along the way

Chapter 46: Don't Let Go: Possibly Lapis focused??? How the whole Stonemason thing is impacting her (not well)

Chapter 47: Burnout: Everyone fucking just hits rock bottom unsure of what the fuck to do

Chapter 48: A Final Farewell: Essentially that oneshot I wrote that one time, Amber sending the Gems and Pines a message from Dipper that encourages them to keep going

Nicki was more sure every day that Shane was getting crazier by the day. He was jumpy, aggressive, and impulsive. He had pulled Carl in that way; he never did that. Treating him as if he was his son.

Nicolette had tried to find the Little Shit after he ran away, but she didn't manage. So she decided to take a walk around the farm. The whole Randall situation was getting her agitated; his only presence managed to do so. And she didn't like it.

She had been scared before; she had witnessed a city fall, her friends die, and a man trying to burn them alive, and she had seen Sophia getting back as walkers, but this felt different. People were scarier than walkers. They could think, and people like Randall's group seemed to enjoy hurting others. She never thought she would be scared of humans in that situation, but she was.

"Carol, send ya?" Daryl's voice made her look up. She hadn't realized she had arrived at his self-made camp. He was looking at his arrows, gathering them, and with him, there was Dale.

"Carol's not the only one that's concerned about you," Dale said.

"Sarah?" he asked again, but Dale shook his head.

"Not just them," Dale said again, "With your new role in the group."

That was true, Daryl was growing on everyone in the group, well, maybe everyone except from Shane. But after what had happened to Sophia, they all realized that there was more of Daryl Dixon than they had noticed before.

"Oh man, I don' need ma head shrunk," Daryl scoffed, bending over to take some other arrows. "This group is broken," at his words, Nicki put herself behind a tree, wanting to listen to what they were going to say at that point and she was afraid that if they'd noticed her, they would have dropped the subject.

"I'm better off fending for myself," Nicki remembered that he moved away just after Sophia died. He could act tough all he wanted, but she was sure that if he moved, it was not because he had enough of all of them. Not after he beat up Randall to know what they all risked.

"You act like you don't care," Dale said. Dale was watching Daryl take a step towards a tree where his jacket was hanging.

"Yeah," Daryl replied, "It's 'cause I don'."

"So live or die, you don't care what happens to Randall?" Dale said, observing Daryl closely, but he didn't wait even a second to answer that he didn't, "Then why don't you stand with me and try to save the kid's life? Why did he want to save that kid so badly? From what she had understood, threats should be eliminated. Randall was a threat, so why try to save him? His group had attacked Rick, Glenn, and Hershel, and it was to kill them. And then, they figured out what their group did to people. They were dangerous. They were a threat.

"Didn't peg you for a desperate son of a bitch," Daryl answered.

"Your opinion makes a difference," Dale said, trying to convince him.

"Man, ain't nobody lookin' at me for nothin'," Daryl answered, taking his crossbow, ready to walk away.

"Carol is," Dale said, following, "Sarah is," Daryl stopped walking, "And I am. Right now," the hunter turned to the older man who kept talking, "And you obviously have Rick's ear."

That was true; Rick trusted Daryl more and more by the day.

That seemed to piss Daryl off as he hissed, "Rick just looks to Shane. Let 'im."

"You cared about what happened to Sophia," Nicki found herself looking at the ground at the mention of the girl's name by Dale, "Cared what it meant to the group," that seemed to have gotten Daryl's attention as he became to walk back towards Dale.

"Torturing people?" Dale kept saying, "This isn't you. You are a decent man," Nicki said. She was sure that if Sarah had been there, she would have agreed with what Dale was saying. She often defended Daryl when the others didn't trust him, "So is Rick. Shane... he's different."

Dale didn't trust Shane, either. She had noticed that, and she was curious to know what Daryl thought about the man.

"Why's that?" Daryl asked, "'Cause he killed Otis?"

Nicolette's eyes widened. She knew it was like that. She had been thinking that for a long time now.

"He told you that?" Dale asked, his eyes wide but not surprised. Would Shane really say something to Daryl? Something so confidential?

"He told some story," Daryl began to explain, "How Otis covered for him, saved his ass. He showed up with the dead guy's gun," she had noticed that, but others didn't, maybe if they'd listened to their conversation something would have rung a bell, "Rick ain't stupid. If he didn't figure that out, it's 'cause he didn't wanna," the started to walk towards the woods, "It's like I said... the group it's broken."

Could Rick really let Shane go around after he killed a man? Of course, Shane getting back was the only reason Carl was alive, but by killing someone... was Rick letting that slide? Seeing how Shane was behaving.

"Ya listened, alright?" Nicki's head shot up when she noticed Daryl standing by the tree.

"Did you notice me?" she asked, still kneeling on the ground.

"Ya make a lot 'f noise for a quiet girl," he said, fixing the position of his crossbow over his shoulder, "Your sister knows ya here?" Nicki shook her head as she stood up.

"But better you than Shane," she answered, and he looked closely at her.

"Why?" he asked.

"Because Sarah trusts you more than she does with Shane," Nicki answered cooly. She noticed him chewing the side of his cheek before heading towards the trees.

"So Shane killed Otis," Nicki said following him.

"Ya can't come," Daryl scoffed.

But Nicki ignored him. "Are we safe with him?"

"Randall?" Daryl asked with a frown.

"Shane," Daryl stopped, taking a breath before turning to her, "Go back to your sister. Everything's fine."

"I think he is dangerous," she stated, looking up at the man. "I'm afraid of what he may do."

The twilight arrived soon. Nicolette had spent her time shooting her arrows against trees or targets. She needed to feel ready; she didn't like to feel so jumpy. The woods now seemed even darker, and the girl asked herself how long it would have taken Randall's friends to find them.

As the sun started to disappear over the horizon, Nicki got back to the house, like she had promised to Sarah. The adults would all be there; they had the meeting to decide what was going to happen to Randall. As she was walking, Carl's frame caught her eye; he, too, was heading toward the house.

"Look who's here," she said, her tone flat as she observed his clothes. "Have you been rolling on the ground?" His pants were dirty with mud.

"You're so annoying," he muttered, passing next to her.

"Thank you," she answered, following him. They walked in silence for a bit, but she could see him glaring at her from time to time.

"What?" Nicki asked with a frown.

"You always shoot without fear," he stated, annoyed, and that got her confused.

"I don't think I'm following," she admitted, and he just scoffed.

"You're really annoying."

Nicolette usually had no problem with the Little Shit being pissed at her, she even found it funny, but at least she would have liked to know what she did so as to annoy him more.

They arrived at the house, where Lory was waiting for her son, while the other entered the house, "I want you to stay with Jimmy."

"But I want to listen," Carl protested.

Lori shook her head, "Not this time."

Nicki got closer to the woman, "Is Sarah inside?" she asked, and Lori nodded her head, leading the three of them inside.

If youve gotten all the way down here hello! Im seriously lacking in the knowledge of tumblr etiquette and functions so please excuse any faux pas.

I just wanted to kind of say that these stories have drastically changed my life. I find so much hope and knowledge and strength in reading Brandon Sandersons books. Im excited and scared to continue on my journey to complete the cosmere.

As Im sure we all know Brandon is fond of long stories with quick conclusions. In that the last hundred or so pages of his books tend to ramp up so quickly Im often shouting out loud or crying or jumping up and down.

That being said. Im notorious for being afraid of ends. I dont often finish my drinks. Ive never finished a project that takes longer than a day or so (without major outside prompting). I often abandon books and come back to them years later (so while I read quite quickly it did take me 4 years to finish Stephen Kings 11/22/63). And it did take me a year or so to get past the first couple or so chapter of The Way of Kings unfortunately.

So while I am incredibly excited to continue this journey Im scared of the end. While the end is nowhere near as of now because I truly believe only death could stop Brandon. I still find myself in those last hundred pages already mind wild hoping the next thing (be it book or show or film) will be just as fulfilling.

OKOKOKOK BYEEEEE

“Imani.” A low, hushed voice calls.

“Imani!” It calls again, seeming closer, as if the person is leaning right over me. 

I’m awoken by someone picking me up, I begrudgingly open my eyes to see Aaron holding me close, carrying me bridal style with a happy expression, his eyes glancing between me and the cabin door. 

I guess we’re here. My eyes dart around, taking in my surroundings. The fresh white snow covering the ground, the treetops, the roof of the cabin.

 One by one, we pile in, first is me and Aaron, with Z right behind us, on his phone, then Robaire, who is carrying everyone’s snacks. 

Jesse and Tae walk in, with Jesse holding a load of bags, he seemingly took up the job of getting the luggage in, although he didn’t have to, we could’ve gotten our own things. 

Tae has his headphones on, seeming in his own world, fiddling with his stuffie, Byeol. As Jesse goes back out to get the rest of our things, and Z follows him, Aaron places me down on the couch in the living room, where Tae sits next to me as I sit up, rubbing my eyes. 

“You didn’t have to carry me in.” I said to Aaron, although it was really nice. He scoffs in response, waving it off.

“Ah, but I wanted to. Plus, you were knocked out. You guys say I’m a heavy sleeper, but look at you!” He exclaims, throwing his arms up. Me and Tae share a look, “T! You literally slept through a tornado! The sirens were going off, the wind was blowing, and rain was pouring down! I-” 

Tae says, then gestures to himself, “I was scared out of my mind, you were just,” Tae then imitates Aaron’s snoring, making all three of us laugh, before Aaron speaks up.

“Yeah, I don’t remember.” He says, tapping his chin as if he was trying to think.

“Of course you don’t, you were knocked out the whole time! You only woke up when Z and Jesse carried you out of the living room and put you in the tub!” I add to the mix, stifling a laugh at the memory of him being placed in the tub filled with cold water. 

“Oh, that was funny!” A loud voice exclaims, making the three of us turn around, seeing Jesse walking over to us, ruffing up Aaron’s hair, earning a flick to the head before sitting next to Tae.

As Aaron, Tae, and Jesse converse, Z walks in and heads straight to his room. Robaire is still just standing there, seemingly in thought, so I get up and walk over to him, the other guys too deep in conversation to notice.

“What's up, Baire?” I ask, slinging my arm over his shoulder.

He shrugs me off, walking to the kitchen. “Nothin’, just glad we’re here.” He tells me, sounding relieved as he places the snacks down on the counter and opens the fridge, it’s empty, of course, you never leave food in a place you only come to once a year.

“I love the fans, but they can be a little much, y’know?” He confesses, taking a notepad from out of nowhere and beginning to write items down. I begin to think back to a few hours ago, those two girls in the gas station, those “fans”, I had forgotten about until now.

“Imani? Are you good?” Robaire snaps me out of it, his face showing slight concern.

“Uh, yeah. I’m fine.” I reply, giving a sheepish grin and a thumbs up to show that I’m okay.

“Okay… did you wanna go with me?” He asks after a few seconds, and I tilt my head in confusion. 

“Go where?” I ask him, crossing my arms. He gives me a deadpan expression before answering. 

“The store? Did you not hear me? I swear, you need to stop blasting your music.” He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head. He finishes writing down his list, I glance down, it’s food and things like that.

“Can you go ask Z if he wants to come?” Robaire asks, pointing in the direction of the hallway, and I nod, “Sure.” I reply, before walking away and heading to the hallway. 

I glance down at my wrist, checking my watch, “Geesh, it’s only 6 o’clock and it’s dark out…” I mutter to myself, walking up to his shut door, where I can hear faint music pouring out, maybe Bruno Mars?

I rhythmically knock on his door, and the music quiets down. “Come in.” His rather monotonous voice calls out, and I open the door.

“Hola, soy Dora! Can you say ‘I will totally come to the store with Imani and Robaire’?”

I say in a high pitched tone, a feeble attempt at being funny, as he only stares at me with a bored expression as he turns his music back up, Silk Sonic, to tune me out. With a grumble, I walk over to his bed and sit beside him.

With a quick swipe, I grab his phone, and quickly type in New Kids On The Block’s ‘Step By Step’, letting it play through his speakers as he snatches his phone back, tossing it beside.

“What did you want?” He asks, tapping his foot to the beat before getting up and walking to his mirror, fiddling with his headband before taking it off and fixing his hair.

“You wanna come to the store with me and Baire? We’re getting like…actual food.” I ask. He stares at me from the mirror as I get up and pace while dancing at the same time.

“Okay.” He simply responds, going back to his bed when Robaire slips in, without knocking.

“Get ready to go.” He says before slipping back out, leaving the door open. Z gets up and puts his shoes on and grabs a jacket.

“Uh, dude. It’s freezing outside and you’re only wearing a jacket? Are you at least gonna change into pants?” I question, putting my hands on my hips.

He shakes his head no, and I huff, walking to the living room, putting on my boots, coat, and gloves.

“Where ya goin’, babe?” I hear Aaron ask, and I jolt when I turn around, as he’s right behind me, his hands hovering over my waist.

“Oh my…!” I shut my eyes for a second, calming down with an exhale. “Uh… Me, Z, and Robaire are going to the store. I think Baire’s already outside, so…”  

I say, as Z walks into the room, earbuds in, hood and sunglasses on as he walks right past us and out the door. Aaron’s gaze lingers on Z for a moment before turning back to me.

“Well, when you get back, we need to have a little chat.” He says, his tone oddly serious. I furrow my brows in confusion, though I don’t question him.

“Mkay… well… bye.” I say, backing up and walking out the door, gently shutting it before turning around to go to the van.

As Z is in the middle section, I go to sit in the front seat before Robaire stops me.

“I’m buying some drinks and I want them up here.” He says bluntly, gesturing to the seat behind the passenger seat, next to Z.

“You can sit there.” 

I give Robaire a blank stare before shutting the front door a bit harshly, opening the sliding van door and sitting down in the empty seat, as Z glances at me for a moment, I can see him out of the corner of my eye.

“Yeah, I’m totally gorgeous, I know.” I say in a joking manner as Robaire starts up the van and backs out of the driveway and toward the, I flutter my eyelashes in a comical way as Z turns his head to glance out the window, his flushed cheeks going unnoticed by me as I continue my antics.

After a minute or two, Robaire chimes in.

“Hey, no one is as beautiful as me!” He exclaims, making a silly duck face in the rearview mirror, making me chuckle and Z scoff in amusement. “Hey, let's settle this! Z,” Robaire calls out to him, making him glance up.

“Who has better looks, me or Mani?” Robaire finishes, making me grin at the use of my nickname, although my name is pretty short already. Z glances between me and Robaire, only for about a split second, before,

“Imani.” He answered bluntly, turning back to gaze out the window. Robaire feigns a mock betrayed expression, while I sputter in laughter. “See? I’m just that gorgeous.” I say with a sigh, crossing my arms and back in my seat as Robaire finally connects his phone to the van instead of listening to the radio, overrun with Christmas, Christmas, with a sprinkle of… Christmas.

As much as I love Christmas and its music, I’d rather listen to something else for now. Well, it doesn’t really matter, me and Robare do not have the same music taste, like, at all. 

I decided to put my headphones on, shuffling my main playlist. Of course, the first song that plays is our cover of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’, the Pentatonix style. “Whatever.”, I think to myself as I let it play, we did good, plus, I love this song. 

After a bit of driving, we pull up to a quaint little store, just outside of town, it’s so quiet, yet so peaceful. The three of us hop out of the van, toques, sunglasses, and hoods on, just in case. We walk in and are welcomed with a sweet bell, and a store clerk is right by the door, wearing a big grin.

“Hello there, how’s it goin’?” He asks, scanning out faces and we give him smiles. “Hm, never seen y’all around before, welcome!” He says, clapping his hands together and grabbing us a cart. 

“My name is John, I’m the owner, I won’t keep ya, just wanted to greet y’all, I do that with all the newcomers, y’know? I usually see locals, so it's good to see some fresh faces. Alrighty, my apologies, we’ve got a real nice selection, so go on ahead and shop!” He says, he’s a talker, for sure, but he seems like a sweet old guy.

Robaire stays behind, talking more with the owner as he hands me the list of things to buy, how kind. Me and Z decide to split up the list between the two of us, so we got through it fairly quickly, until we didn’t.

Robaire decided to not specify some items, like what type of coffee, knowing his taste though, I decided to find the more ‘exquisite’ things, as he would say. Good thing Z was in the next aisle, as I needed to grab something off the top shelf.

“Yo, Z.” I wave him over, grabbing his arm and pulling him over to my aisle, where I’m stuck in a hot chocolate predicament. The last thing on the list, I want the brand on the top shelf.

I point up to it, “I want that one, up there.” I say, expecting him to grab it, but he doesn’t. Instead, he grabs me and lifts me in the air and puts me on his shoulders, much to my disdain, he knows I don’t like heights. “Z!” I exclaim rather loudly, getting the attention of a shopper in the next aisle, staring at me with a bewildered expression as I quickly grab the hot chocolate and gently tap his chest with my foot, letting him know I got it.

As he puts me down, I can’t help but feel more than flustered as I put the hot chocolate in the cart. I turn away, holding my totally on fire face. “Z! Why’d you do that?” The close proximity left us both flustered, I catch a glimpse of the small change in his demeanor as he tries to mask it with his normally neutral expression, though I can see the slight furrow of his brows and the subtle flush in his face. He simply gives me a shrug, turning to walk, rather quickly, back to the front of the store.

I decide to brush off his odd reaction as I am already feeling odd myself, we walk to the cash register, where the clerk is waiting. “Did you find everything okay?” He asks as Z starts unloading the cart. 

“Yes, thank you.” I say with a small smile, holding my hands together and rocking back and forth on my heels. Robaire gives me an odd expression, tilting his head.

“What’s wrong? Why’s your face all red?” He asks, making me pause for a moment, letting out a breath. “Um, I dropped… something, uh, hot chocolate. It just made me a bit embarrassed. I’m fine though.” I explain, giving him a thumbs up, he seemingly buys it, nodding his head as we wait to pay.

After a bit, we pay, but before we walk out, the clerk stops us.

“I’m sorry, I have to ask, are you guys in a show or something? I swear I’ve seen your faces before!” He asks as we take our pitiful disguises off, he snaps his fingers when he seems to figure it out. 

“No, no, you guys are singers, aren’t ya? Uh, what’re you called…O-Town? No… Something-Town… I’m sorry, I’m not great with music nowadays.” He sheepishly says, rubbing the back of his neck as Robaire chuckles. 

“We’re 4*TOWN, and it’s okay.” He says, patting the clerks back. “Right, 4*TOWN! My granddaughter loves you guys! Posters and everything. Gotta admit, you guys are pretty cool, you’ve got this 90s vibe goin’ on.” The clerk says with a grin, putting his hands on his hips.

“I don’t mean to bother, but could I get a photo? It’s okay if you don’t wanna.” He asks, and we all nod, glad that he was so kind with it unlike some other people.

“Sure, it’s no problem.” Robaire says, and the four of us gather as the clerk gets his phone out and we pose, snapping a picture. “Oh, thank you, her birthday is the week after next, and I’ll be getting her tour tickets for Christmas, she’ll be so happy.” He says with a smile, sending the photo to his granddaughter.

“Oh, her birthday! Here,” I get an idea, taking a pen out of my purse and grabbing the shopping list from Z’s hands, crossing out the list and turning it over, writing my signature and a happy birthday message before handing it to Robaire as he does the same, then to Z.

He gives it to the clerk, whose smile just got even bigger. “Oh, thank you so much, you have no idea how much happy this'll make her!” He says gratefully, giving us our bags. 

“I’ve kept you long enough, y’all have a great night.” He calls out as we exit, heading to the van and loading it up with our groceries. I turn to Robaire. “I wanna drive.”

“Why?” He questions. “Dude, I like, never get to drive the van, lemme drive!” I say, giving him my best puppy dog eyes as he grimaces. “Ew, never do that again, and fine!’ He exclaims as I fist bump the air and get into the driver's seat as Z and Robaire get into the middle section. 

I connect my phone to the van, deciding to put my SEVENTEEN playlist on shuffle, turning up the volume as ‘Fear’ comes out of the speakers and I drive back to the cabin, all previous feelings replaced with peace and calmness.

im curious as to whether references to things that are very modern to us (i.e. occam's razor, the glass ceiling, etc.) are just a function of storytelling to help us understand themes and symbolisms (as in, if characters only referenced things recent to their history we would never understand what was going on, because i presume this story is taking place billions upon trillions of years in the future). realistically, these humans should be more alien to us than familiar, even if they still look like us. OR i wonder if there was something that occurred in the previous universe relatively soon after our current history (let's say ~10k years from now). because even if our history is preserved, it should be overwritten by a sheer volume of information that would only make it relevant to historians who specifically study the period prior to us becoming a physics-wielding species. random med students wouldn't be making these references, even if they're prodigies.

Ok so There’s been at least one Great War/revolution. Maybe there was some catastrophic universe-spanning apocalypse. Maybe somewhere the old universe suddenly entered a state of false vacuum decay and humanity was far enough away from the point of origin that it had time to prepare and preserve or escape to a different plane. Even though this is billions of years in the future their technology might be rudimentary. Was all of history between then and now erased in between?

the reason i'm saying all this is that (i'm going to try to make my point again but briefer this time). sometimes feels like this is taking place 10000 years in the future instead of billions or trillions. what i'm wondering is if this is just a function of storytelling (references we understand are #crucial to delivering #themes and also way more fun to read). OR if we're dealing with a universe different than our own (not meant to model our timeline in the first place), OR if the apocalypse happened relatively "soon" after our current "history" today. does that make sense?

Oh okay I got to the section describing transpositioning and teleporting. They’re folding spacetime not atomizing. thank gawdddd The idea of getting vaporized when teleporting scares me soooo much. If we ever invented teleporting and it was like that I would be a staunch no-teleporter-EVER. I keep thinking like. “Who of the cast could possibly be the one getting murdered?” And part of me is hoping it’s utsushikome (not permanently obvies). Because I want this story to pull a new vegas. solving a friend’s or lover’s death is out. solving your own murder mystery has pastiche. it’s fun. it’s fueled by spite, not even necessarily a will to live. its fun vibes. Also a few of the order members have decided her grandpa had BAD VIBES. and they literallyyyy JFKed him. So. Um. Time to keep up the family tradition lesbian. get shot in the head

actually I’m still kind of hung up on that grandfather (sort of) thing from the first chapter. Maybe they’re genetically related but not granddaughter-grandfather in the traditional sense. Maybe the order is trying to wipe out a genetic line or inherent ability that su and granddad have, or permanently remove some knowledge/mission he was undertaking prior to the JFKing.

Also why did granddad get shot when he was on deaths door with dementia anyway? To make a statement? To make a point towards other members of the order? Did he commission it? “Would it be funny if I fucked up my granddaughter or what”

Bardiya had always had the uncanny ability - or maybe it was a curse - of not seeming to respond to social divides at all in his interactions with others. Whether it was age, wealth, Party, sex or experience, he hopped right over that stuff like it was a puddle. Sometimes this worked in his favor, though it could also cause problems. The amount of occasions I could recall where he'd got on to the bad side of a prominent scholar or academy patron because he didn't 'show enough respect' was well into the double digits. Kamrusepa had impressed on us an unofficial command to keep him contained at any social functions that involved our class. ⬇️ On the contrary I would think? If I was a successful academic I’d find reactions like Kamurespa’s fawning overwhelming to constantly encounter. I’d much rather talk to people like Bardiya.

Ok re: the fight su has with her milfy mentor in the arboretum. the fact that if two people are connected by an open wound they register as one person and that this circumstantial can be used in an act of violence towards one another is maybe the hottest thing I’ve ever read. Who said that
