All You Need to Know About Internal Combustion Engines

More than 250 million highway vehicles in the US rely on internal combustion (IC engines) because of their excellent durability and drivability. They can use renewable or alternative fuels, such as natural gas, propane, biodiesel, or ethanol, in addition to gasoline or diesel.  Additionally, they can be combined with plug-in hybrid electric systems to extend the range of hybrid electric vehicles or hybrid electric powertrains to improve fuel efficiency.

How Does an Internal Combustion Engine Work?

The fundamental chemical process of releasing energy from a fuel and air mixture is combustion, also referred to as burning.  In an internal combustion engine (ICE), the fuel is ignited and burned inside the engine itself. The energy from the combustion is then partially converted into work by the engine. A stationary cylinder and a moving piston make up the engine. The piston is propelled by the expanding combustion gasses, which turns the crankshaft. This motion ultimately propels the wheels of the car through the powertrain's gearing system.

The spark-ignition gasoline engine and the compression-ignition diesel engine are the two types of IC engines currently in production. The majority of these engines have a four-stroke cycle, which requires four piston strokes to complete a cycle. The intake, compression, combustion, power stroke, and exhaust are the four separate processes that make up the cycle.

Let’s discuss these phases in detail!

Stroke 1 – Intake

The piston is almost at TDC at the start of the intake stroke. When the intake valve opens, the piston begins to move in the direction of the BDC. A mixture of air and fuel is drawn into the cylinder. Since new air or a mixture is introduced to the engine during this stroke, it is called the intake. When the piston reaches BDC, the intake stroke is over.

The engine uses energy during the intake stroke because the crankshaft is rotating as a result of the components' inertia.

Stroke 2 – Compression

After the intake stroke is complete, the compression stroke begins with the piston at BDC. Intake and exhaust valves are both closed during the compression stroke, which moves the piston towards TDC. The air/mixture is compressed with both valves closed, reaching its maximum pressure as the piston approaches TDC.

During the compression stroke, before the piston reaches the TDC (but very close to it):

·       For an internal combustion engine, the spark is produced

·       Fuel is injected into diesel engines.

Stroke 3: Power

A piston at the top dead center (TDC) begins the power stroke. The intake and exhaust valves are still both closed. After the compression stroke, the combustion of the air-fuel mixture began, leading to a significant rise in internal pressure. The piston is pushed downward and towards the BDC by the pressure inside the cylinder.

The engine only generates power during the power stroke.

Stroke 4: Exhaust

After the power stroke is complete, the piston begins the exhaust stroke at the BDC. This portion of the stroke sees the exhaust valve open. The majority of the exhaust gasses are forced out of the cylinder and into the exhaust pipes by the piston's movement from the BDC to the TDC.

The engine uses energy during the exhaust stroke because the crankshaft is rotating as a result of the components' inertia.

he is a pompous self-important asshole who thinks he is the best because he pulls the express. he's the fastest engine on sodor, but when he decided to match the speed of a visiting engine, he lost his dome. he shows off when he is supposed to be learning how to pull passenger trains and then fucks up pulling passenger trains. many such cases! every time he does something grand and idiotic because he believes he can pull it off just because he is better, and every time it blows up in his face.

Cersei Lannister

She frames her daughter-in-law Marg for adultery (which is high treason when you're a queen) by getting a guy to falsely confess to the Pope. Unfortunately the Pope gets him to tell the truth that the only queen he fucked was actually Cersei herself and she also got him to kill the previous Pope for her (this is considered deicide btw.) She also ends up being accused of regicide of her husband (which she did) and adultery/high treason (which she did) and incest (which she did). To ensure Marg would be as screwed as possible she also had a bunch of laws changed (which she was told was a bad idea) which not only bite her in the ass but could potentially undermine the power of the crown significantly. She did all this due to a prophecy that made her think Marg is gonna take her down with no evidence (Marg is literally 16 and seems to be just chillin) and due to trying to avert the prophecy may very well make it come true, including not only being taken down but also all her kids dying and her brother-lover killing her. Whoopsie.; Generally spends all her time making the dumbest decisions possible while thinking about how smart she is. Everything ends up coming back around to screw her

So obsessed with herself she fucks her twin. Convinced she's the only smart person in the room constantly. Feels threatened by literal preteens because of a prophecy that told her she'd be cast down by someone "younger and more beautiful". Believes herself superior to everyone around her. Eventually gets brought low by trying to blackmail and bribe the faith into imprisoning her 16 year old daughter in law and is humiliated by being forced to walk naked across the city. Of course, she finishes it swearing revenge.; Loves her children only as an extension of herself.
