Here's to the women of Miss Fisher.
To Phryne. Our daring aviatrix and occasional agent turned lady detective and warrior for women's rights. From the reluctant host of a soiree for the women's hospital, through supporting your flower maidens, to the determined organiser of a fundraising tennis tournament, we watched you find your feet and blossom into a bold, courageous and brilliant trailblazer.
To Dot. Quiet as a mouse, but the bravest woman we know. There is nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it. Whenever you find an obstacle, we can be sure that less than a month later you'll have overcome it, whether that's making phone calls, learning to drive, or learning to whistle.
To Mac. You never did give up on the living, and you never would. Fighting for the rights of women and girls to get the healthcare and education they need and deserve. Not one to pull up the ladder behind you, you climbed up and kept lowering more ropes.
To Aunt Prudence. We many not see eye to eye on everything, or even many things, but your persistence and commitment to fundraising and supporting organisations that support girls and women has done more in an afternoon than many could hope to achieve in a lifetime.
To Alice, Camelia, Beatrice, Concetta, Clara and the rest. We didn't get to know you for long, but you all fought in your own ways to make your own paths in a world that didn't want you to.
And to Jane. With role models like these, we can only imagine the woman you would have turned out to be. Whoever she was, I'm sure she was brilliant.

ain't practical, a world you can't touch (The English | Cornelia/Eli | G | 5k)
The Pushing Daisies AU in which Eli can bring people back to life with his touch, but has tried his best not to until Cornelia.
wins this year's award for: Deepest Cut, Zagged
The Lady With The Recorder Asks The Questions (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries | Phryne/Jack | T | 6k | WIP)

well-versed in etiquette, extraordinarily nice (Good Omens, Historical RPF | Aziraphale/Crowley | G | 3k)

wins this year's award for: Quickest Fic (I wrote it in four days)
speak easy, swing hard (Marvel Cinematic Universe | Steve/Tony | T | 13k)
The 1920s Prohibition era!AU in which Tony runs a nightclub empire, Steve is an aspiring artist and/or questionably undercover agent, Sam and Bucky are bootlegging their way through America and nobody knows what Natasha is up to.
wins this year's award for: Most Historical Research (I watched two seasons of Boardwalk Empire and had to figure out multiple characters' speech patterns, then transpose these to the 1920s. Also I listened to so much vaudeville)
I don't think I will be around as much in 2024, barring unexpected hyperfixations, but I wish you all a glorious year anyway! May your WIPs be finished, your ships prolific and your fandoms full of joy.

I keep making great progress with Doylesworth Street, y'all! I've already finished both squares (there's one with a fountain right next to the church and then the second one is across the street, which kinda serves as the main one... with an arbor for live music and all sorts of shops around) and Bloomingdale's, the super fancy schmancy store where my sims will go get the latest fashions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bloomingdale's sells all sorts of items, from trendy outfits made from the best garments for all those crazy flappers to a wide variety of accesories like hats, purses, perfumes, pearls and even makeup and nailpolish! Just about anything a gal could need. There's also room for the gentleman, with a great selection of suits, chemises, ties, top hats and, of course, watches and cufflinks.
For those with a tight budget, Bloomingdale's offers the best garments by the cut. Get a piece of fabric and sew it yourself, you'll save a few pennies for sure!
Tumblr media
I'm also done with the last build on the street: the super luxurious mansion where (obviously) the landlord will inhabit. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but the two townhouses you saw on my previous post are each divided in two apartments, one per floor. This mansion though serves as one big-ass unit:
Tumblr media
If you couldn't tell, it's loosely inspired by Phryne Fisher's mansion, from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
And last but not least, just so you can get an idea of where everything is located, a high view of both sides of the street:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... how do you like it so far? I cannot believe the insane amount of time I'm spending on building this lot, I think I'm on my fifth day on a row now lol

Dear fantastic Phryne-fandom,
are you ready for another round of polls?
What if... we fantasized another - our own! - Miss Fisher movie?? 🎉🎉🎉 (People have done so with a mafia movie lately). Let's concoct a plot!
We need an exposé. We will create it together & by using polls, so you can vote for your favorite ideas.
Please send any ideas, if you like, so I can include them!
Who will we meet again from the show? (Main & minor characters)
Who do we finally get to know? (Who never appeared in the show although they should have).
What happens Phrack-wise??? (How does their relationship develop)?
What specific action scenes & stunts will we have?
What new considerable talents of Phryne do we see and who taught her?
Where does it take place? (Main & minor settings)
What needs to be quoted & referenced from the show?? (A thing, a line, a scene)?
How many people (or goldfish) are murdered?
Anything about the story? Do we really need it?? Ok: what are Phryne & Jack chasing or trying to solve?
Do we have a (working) title?
Let's start after the wonderful Phryne fashion tournament (middle to end of November). Watch out for #phryne movie II

Oooh, you’re doing prompts!!!!!!!! I’m feeling very drawn towards 9 for Phrack since I know you’re okay with modern AUs and I would love to see your take on this prompt, or maybe 10 as an alternative! Thank you! 💕
Of course! And thank you for indulging my love of Modern AUs. ❤️
Also, I'm always open to prompts, I just don't always have these lovely lists. It's kind of the only way I get anything written these days. 😂
Anyway enjoy!
#9: Taking pictures when the other’s not watching
-------
It starts with Phryne.
(Doesn't it always?)
She’s somehow spirited her way into the middle of his most recent crime scene, a lounge act where a magician’s assistant has found herself suddenly and unfortunately in an unplanned double act with herself.
She’d feel bad about sailing past the new crime scene photographer (a fresh-faced boy named Matty who reminds her so much of Hugh when they first met that she’s rather tempted to get a new assistant just to see if history repeats itself) except he has the utter temerity to call her ‘ma’am’ as he tries to stop her.
(She tries not to take too much joy in the way he flinches at her predatory smile after he does.)
When she tries to take a photo of the murder weapon, however, she is stopped by much sterner stuff.
(Even if he is not nearly so stern as when they first met.)
“No personal photos at the crime scene, Miss Fisher. I’m not sure why I have to remind you every time. It’s why we have an authorised photographer.”
“They’re not personal, Jack, it’s not as though I’m taking them of you.”
“All the same, phone away please.”
Phryne huffs and makes a big show of dropping her phone into her purse and waving her now empty hands at him in the snippiest manner possible.
“Happy?” she asks.
“Ecstatic,” he replies, so dry it should be served in stemware.
Her smile is even more predatory at that, but Jack never flinches.
Later, he can’t decide if he’s more surprised or impressed to find the photos on her phone all the same.
“How…?”
“It’s all in the hands, Jack.” She waves them at him again, less snippy, more salacious. “Magic is all about misdirection. Look at where I’m not and not where I am, and all that.” He raises an eyebrow, but does not otherwise comment.
“Prestidigitation,” she whispers cheekily, and he rolls his eyes.
“Look,” she adds, in that overly cheerful tone that always means trouble for him. “I even got a good one of you. I suppose I did take a personal photo after all.”
She shows him. It’s in profile, and she thinks he looks especially handsome.
He thinks he looks especially unauthorised.
“A lucky shot,” he mutters and he is an idiot for not realising before he does so that it will be like waving a darkroom red light in front of a bull.
And the worst part, the absolute most galling part, is he can’t figure out how she keeps doing it.
There are shots of him at every crime scene after. Some close up, some far away. Sometimes he’s doing something interesting. One time he was trying to remember his shopping list. It doesn’t matter, they all go in her book.
Oh she’s keeping a book now, didn’t she mention?
A photo album of his (her?) greatest hits. He grumps about it a few times, until she reveals, softly and in that unguarded manner she has right before she falls asleep, that she looks through it when he’s out of town and she’s missing him.
He doesn’t grump about it after that.
He does, however, start to try his own hand at clandestine photography.
Phryne thinks it’s adorable.
(But not adorable enough to let him succeed.)
She sees him, every time, and at the very last second hides behind a post or a constable or, one time, Jack himself. He’s not quite sure how she accomplished that one. It becomes a dance of sorts, between them, a waltz where they both know the steps but he is moving in 3/4 time and she is in duple metre.
She’s almost hoping he makes it, one of these days. She likes it when he surprises her, but she likes vexing him too much to make it easy.
It goes on for a while, but that’s ok, Phryne loves dancing.
She’s less keen about accompanying her aunt to Brisbane.
“Two weeks,” she laments, throwing her clothes in a suitcase. “And board meetings every single day.” She sighs. “Goodbye, fun, I’ll miss you.”
“And I’ll miss you,” he remarks, not looking up from the chair where he’s reading.
She smiles, sweetly at first, and then coyly.
“Too bad you never got any shots of me, Jack. You could look at the photos when you get lonely.”
“Oh,” he remarks casually, “I’ve got a whole book of them.” At her stunned expression, he adds, “didn’t I mention?”
Phryne abandons the packing.
“Show me,” she demands.
Graciously he pulls a photo album from his briefcase.
(If she wasn’t so shocked she’d have spared a moment to snort that it’s embossed with the words Our Precious Memories on the cover.)
She’s not sure it’s so precious.
It’s full of her.
Specifically, photos of her at crime scenes going back weeks, months. How…
“Prestidigitation,” he whispers as his face breaks into a grin.
She looks at the photos again. Something is niggling, something not quite —
“You’re in some of these!” she shouts, and he shrugs, utterly unashamed.
“Magic, or so I’ve heard, is all about misdirection. Look at where I’m not and not where I was.”
“But I can see where you are,” she insists, jabbing an elegant finger at one of the photos.
“True. But where I was, about a year ago, was writing young Matty’s letter of recommendation.”
The penny drops along with her jaw, which hangs open as she takes this information in. Just a little open, of course. A very ladylike amount, she would later insist. She supposes Matty isn’t quite so much like Hugh afterall.
She is… impressed. She can admit it. Or she would if she wasn’t about to be very, very busy.
“Abracadabra,” he murmurs in her ear right before she makes all their clothes disappear.
Later, much later, she looks through the book again, smiling at all their precious memories.
“It’s going to be so much harder now,” she warns him. “Now that you’ve tipped your hand. Much, much harder.”
“Phryne,” he says, with so much warmth and playfulness in his voice she’d swoon if she was standing. “Never ever assume I only have one card up my sleeve.”
She just shrugs, noncommittally, the corner of her mouth quirking in time with her shoulder. It’s a bit soon, she knows, but possible. And she does so love it when he surprises her.
“Who said I was talking about the photographs?” she asks, too innocently to be believed.
It takes a moment for him to cotton on, but when he does — a soft ‘ah’ escaping his lips before they find hers again — it’s pure magic. Not surprising, but she loves that too.
(Prestidigitation indeed.)

I've been watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and holy fuck
Phryne is awesome
her and Jack should've been the most amazing couple of this show but haven't made it happen??? very rude
and most importantly: Hugh and Dot together are the most precious beings in the world and I'm dying they are too cute I'm actually squealing at all of their scenes
also more people need to get in this fandom and read my future fanfics on this because I need to write something in this fandom soon because it's a great show

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favourite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers.
It has been a truly embarrassing number of weeks since I got this, but better late than never, right? Here are my 5, in chronological order:
"All Our Gifts at Once, or, the Young Sea-Man," BBC Sherlock, 48k. A Victorian-era realist retelling of The Little Mermaid. John, an illiterate shipwright, gives up his home and his voice for a chance to work alongside Sherlock Holmes, the famous London botanist. My first long fic (still my longest to date!) and monstrously ambitious; to this day I can't quite believe I pulled it off. But this is a self-rec post, so I'm gonna say it: I really did.
"A Case-by-Case Basis," BBC Sherlock, 5,2k. A comic, highly tropy getting-together fic. Which is really not usually my thing at all! I wrote this for an exchange, and I managed to honor the prompt while still making it very much my own, and I remain proud that I managed both those things at the same time.
"Every Day's Most Quiet Need," Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, 22.5k. Canon-compliant Mac-PoV fic about Mac's longstanding (if buried) feelings for Phryne and her growing friendship with Jack Robinson and the tensions between these things. This one really stretched me, as did working with @havingbeenbreathedout (who also prompted the fic) as a beta.
"Voskresenie," For All Mankind, 8k. An immediately-post-s3 fic set in Moscow about mourning in the face of catastrophic loss, from the PoV of the character you're thinking of if you have watched the show (which I do not want to spoil for anyone who hasn't!!!) This was, in its own way, a very ambitious fic (which uhhh seems to be a theme among my favorites) but I think I got to something very real and raw and universal while also keeping the specificity of the character and the setting.
"No Real Reason to be Lonely," For All Mankind, 3.5k. Post S2 fic. Ed's had a shitty day, but at least he's got Molly looking out for him, and she knows just the thing to cheer him up. Ed and Molly's friendship is one of my favorite things about this show, and I feel like I got the full dimensionality of it here.
I am too inept lazy to do this askbox-wise, so I will instead tag: @midnight-els , @moocowmoocow , @doctornerdington , @peachpulpeuse , and @trickybonmot . And anyone else who wants to do it -- please tag me if you do! I love these things.

📓 for hrpf or not!hrpf!
i have and will continue to think about jacqueline robinson, lady police constable, former war nurse, former ladies companion to the deputy superintendent's daughter (that is, until rosie told her, i'm marrying sidney fletcher, and, you don't have to leave, we can carry on as we have, and, do you really think it wise to join the constabulary). constantly at odds with the one honorable miss phryne fisher (who is rich, and glamorous, and doesn't care about working her way up the narrow ladder that society deems acceptable, and maybe it would be easier if jack also decided that working within the system could go hang, but she cares about the system, because what are we if there is no law? what are we without some higher standard we must strive to meet?) (and if she finds herself watching phryne, with her silks and beads and red slash of a smile, and wanting --) (but nothing can come of that)
i have a whole case fic fully plotted, i just haven't felt that my prose skills are up to it, but maybe this year is the year i finally try again!!!!!

Murder on the Ballarat Train vs Dead Man's Chest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID 1: A screencap from the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries episode 'Murder on the Ballarat Train'. Phryne sits on the bonnet of her Hispano Suiza which is parked on the grassy bank of a river. A furry wrap is beneath her, her thigh is exposed and she waves a large pink feather. /End ID]
[ID 2: Phryne and Jack lie on their fronts below a pier on a sandy beach. Phryne's legs are up in the air as she holds on to her hat. Jack is smiling. /End ID]
We're off on our travels today with murders on the Ballarat train and at Queenscliff. Remember to consider the following when casting your vote:
Does this plot make any sense at all?
Method of murder(s)
Absurdity of characters' behaviour (main or guest)
Wild historical/cultural/other inaccuracies
Supporting statements:
1x2 - Murder on the Ballarat Train
Nominators say: "what's a train timetable anyway?"
A sleeper train to Ballarat… which is only a few hours’ journey from Melbourne.
Phryne going to Ballarat to get a car makes no sense when she already lives in Melbourne. That car probably passed through Melbourne on its way to Ballarat 😂
Phryne claiming that she 'does not allow herself to be lustfully compromised in [her] murder investigations' despite substantial evidence to the contrary when we're only on the second episode.
That entire scene where Phryne goes to watch the rowing was ridiculous.
Bert was hypnotised into laying an egg one time!!!!
2x3 - Dead Man's Chest
Nominators say: "There was not enough actual treasure"
Someone deposited the fish monger's dead body beneath the pier in broad daylight on a busy beach and no one noticed?
Actually what on earth was going on with that smuggling plot. Also there being two doublooms. I'm confused again.
Phryne flirting with Gerald?????? She must have been desperate.
Phryne and Jack go for a midnight swim fully clothed after dangling off the side of the pier.
The temperance union are really dedicated to picketing crime scenes, including those with the dead bodies of their former members 🤨

Nice ad libbing Phryne
👍
Is somebody poisoning Hazel?
🤔
But MORE IMPORTANTLY, don't cry Dot
😭
You tell her Phryne!
Oh, Jaaaaack, are you not going to tell Phryne what you said to Hugh? Confidential police information, my arse!
😆
That's one smoldering look you shot her, you damned tease
🥵
He so rarely gets the uper hand in these situations, he might as well enjoy it
😁
Ah Hazel, you really don't look well
And Phryne!
😬
Policeman!
🥃
Gone in a flash!
Knee in the goolies!
HURRY UP!!!!!!!
Oh, she bested him, you go girl!
🤛
And what about the attempted murder of Phryne Fisher?!?!
Well, I guess I can over look that because YES!!!! Hugh listened to Jack, good man! And the engagement is back on again
🥳🍾
And yes, Phryne, Dot IS your rock of Gibralta and Hugh has learned constabulary charm from the master or constabulary charm.
🥰
Oh...as I was saying
😍😍😍
I am now understanding why some people have declared this their favourite episode
💑
A duet? I'm dying here. Jack plays the piano, he sings, Phryne sings, they sing, they keep looking at each otheR LIKE THAT, AND THE WAY JACK CLOSED HIS EYES ON PHRYNE'S HIGH 'WORLD IN SLUMBER' HAS TO BE ILLEGAL, AND THE LOOK OF UNADULTERATED JOY ON PHYNE'S FACE AT THE END
🤯
OK, I MAY have watched that last bit a couple of times...maybe three. No more than three, honest. But hgfdysfhjk;lhgfdjkl; can you blame a girl?!?!?!?!
The look of melancholy on Jack's face before he knows Phryne is there, they way her dress sounds like a snare drum, Jack's oh so slight smile - he knows what song he's playing, he knows where these lyrics go - the way she watches him, the look of delighted hope on Phryne's face, the way Jack licks his lips at the end.
Surely these two can't hold out much longer?!?!?
😤
If I can't stand it how have they not just spontaneously combusted?!
🥵🔥🔥
I mean, I know they're pros at this, they could torture me for years without breaking a sweat, but come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
😫

Thank you @leliesblou for tagging us
Last song: English Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams and It's Not Enough by The Who - Both my alarms went off at half past 8 this morning and I looked Very Cool (deeply uncool) on the train as I tried to shut them up.
Currently watching: Apart from the constant loop of Miss Fisher, it's been Only Connect and University Challenge.
Three ships: Jack/Phryne, Mycroft/Lestrade, Inquisitor/Sera
Favourite colour: Pink
Currently consuming: Well, I just had a waffle, chocolate spread and marshmallow sandwich, but now I'm drinking palma violet flavour squash.
First ship: Do I admit to the many, many OC ships I had for my baby fandoms? Let's go with 'no' and pretend it was Jack/Ianto.
Relationship status: Facebook, AO3 and now Tumblr official with @glamorouspixels. They have played Mario Kart with my mum, which is certainly some kind of relationship stage.
Last movie: Genuinely can't remember, but it may well have been Muppet Treasure Island.
Currently working on: The next chapter of Following On, and keeping my eyes open. Tagging, with no pressure, @kanna-ophelia, @jonairadreaming, @hymnsandarias, @thesilversun, @ewebie and @avoteforme

Journalism AU for Phrack? 👀😍
This is such a fun one for me, you've no idea. I'd do this as a modern AU - of course there were female journalists in the 1920s but, as one can see from Away With The Fairies, also insane amounts of industry sexism. So! Modern AU where everyone is in journalism. Phryne is the star investigative reporter, rakes in scoops like nobody's business, has caused the paper to be sued multiple times but they deal with it because she's just that good. Jack is a copy-editor. He and Phryne clash repeatedly and furiously because of the incredibly pedantic way in which he edits her work - while she's a fantastic investigator she can be slapdash at fact-checking and has a high error count - so they're forever in each other's faces over what he's done to her latest story - "did you have to remove all the Oxford commas, Jack?" "I'm afraid the stylebook insists" "but what about the strippers, Hitler and Stalin? WHAT ABOUT THE STRIPPERS" "if you would please stop yelling about strippers in public, Miss Fisher" "STRIPPERS! STRIPPERS!" - while the rest of the newsroom are watching and eating popcorn and money is changing hands. Dot and Hugh are baby crimers who are going through important life rituals like seeing your first corpse and covering your first fire together. Bert and Cec are photographers. Mr Butler lays pages. Aunt Prudence is managing editor. Mac is still the coroner; she shouldn't let Phryne take so many peeks at dead bodies, but what are friends for? Jack gets unwillingly dragged into Phryne's latest exclusive on sex trafficking because his former father-in-law is involved, so she presses him to help her out despite the massive conflict of interest. Rosie works in PR - at one point she sends Phryne a correction request and Phryne is LIVID - and Sidney Fletcher is a big-bucks advertiser who tries to kill the story on him by threatening to pull his ad dollars. The truth shall make ye free/fret, except Phryne does all the freeing and Jack does all the fretting.
Leave an AU and a pairing in my ask and I’ll give you the plot of the fic I won’t write for it.

What is a very minor thing that you've done that you are so incredibly impressed with yourself for doing?? Did you make a perfect circle? Did you parallel park correctly on the first try??
Hi Liz! This is a great question!
It sounds silly, but since I started writing, I haven't been reading as much; books, fanfiction, you name it. I used to be the type of person to read a book a week, devouring them like nobody's business. So I've been trying to read more. I just started reading the Phryne Fisher novels, since I love the show and have watched it probably 4 times all the way through. I forgot how much I loved reading novels and how different an experience they are from reading fanfiction. I'm going to make the conscious decision to read more this year.

3 Ships You Like: ones that are less obvious from my blog content: Sylvain/Felix (FE3H), Phryne/Jack (Miss Fisher), Viktor/Yuuri
First Ship Ever: Lois and Clark (The New Adventures of Superman) closely followed by Mulder and Scully. First slash ship was Clark/Lex from Smallville, I mean come ON. (I was also into Faith/Buffy but felt it was unrequited)
Last Song You Heard: I Don't Feel Like Dancin' by Scissor Sisters. Don't feel like dancin'! Dancin'!
Favorite Childhood Book: The Chronicles of Narnia, specifically The Silver Chair overall
Currently Reading: just finished The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher and started The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang
Currently Watching: just started a groupwatch of The Imperial Coroner; ongoing groupwatch of TGCF donghua; ongoing with-friends-watches of Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan*. Can't seem to find something to watch on my own.
Currently Consuming: Whittaker's Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar
Currently Craving: Whittaker's Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar, and companionship
Tagging: no obligation! @galexibrain @stephaniematurin @starbuck-7 @carriecmoney
