“Someone help me dress these!” Eddie screams over his shoulder. His hands are pressed so far into the wounds on Steve’s chest that his fingers squish against something warm and wet. Steve winces at the pressure, and more blood pours from his mouth.

Eddie turns around to find Nancy still standing behind him. She should be running to grab the gauze and bandages from Steve’s pack, tearing her clothes into strips like the last time the bats ripped him open. She shouldn’t just stand here, motionless, dread and acceptance scrawled across her face.

Robin would kill her if she wasn’t dragging Dustin away into the trailer after Nancy agreed to help Steve. Now Eddie understands– she just didn't want them to watch this.

It wasn’t supposed to go like last time. They were defenseless. Steve didn’t even have a shirt or shoes when they traversed this hellscape. But this time they wore their War Zone gear, Eddie and Robin prepped molotov cocktails, and Steve had hammered nails into a shield ’to match my bat, Robs, how cool is that?’. 

They agreed it’d be more dangerous at the trailer, so of course Steve volunteered. He’s the fighter, sword and shield. He’s the goddamn babysitter and if Dustin’s here, then so is he.

But Steve promised Eddie a date, he promised not to do anything cute. Now–

“Eds,” Steve coughs, dark red blood seeps out from between his teeth, trickling down the corners of his mouth. It soaks his hair. Out of everything, that’s what rips the first sob from Eddie’s chest. “Please, Eds, you have to go. Get them out of here.”

“No, no please, Stevie– you promised me, remember? Enzo’s, a movie at the Hawk, and a goodnight kiss.” Snot drips from Eddie’s nose into Steve’s chest wound, and he swallows the vomit that floods his mouth.

Steve chuckles, the sound so wet it gurgles. His lips are blue, his eyes unfocused. “Don’t remember promising a goodnight kiss, Munson.”

“Let a guy dream, big boy,” Eddie sobs through a fake, comforting smile.

“You’ll be in my dreams, Eddie. For always.”

Had fun one night and doodled an entire page in a comic format 'cus I can. ...And then forgot about it for almost a month. Finally I was able to finish it hehe Panels aren't linked by plot, consider this a stylised sketch dump/AU comic style test (I'm not planning to make a comic, just wanted to draw out some ideas I had for a long time). What I can tell for certain is that first two panels are related to the Sculptor Also, I FINALLY finished listening to TMA! After five years. On a third try. Only thing I regret is me spoilering a bunch of cool stuff three or so years ago and menaging to remember it up to season 5... At least I was only partially crashed by the finale :D This podcast means the world to me, truly. Having full context to everything is amazing and I love Martin with all my heart. Also two particular Martin-centric episodes from season 5 were very cathartic and made me feel uncomfortably seen in a way I didn't even knew I needed- (If you know you know which ones I'm talking about 😭)

Operation: CAKE BAKE

He's already reaching over to turn off the alarm when he hears the front door close downstairs. It would have gone off five minutes later, but it wasn't worth waking Cortana if he was already up. As quietly as possible, he slips out of bed. She'd wake up with the sunrise in plenty of time to join Linda on the front porch, he and Fred could start—

"...where're you goin...?"

He stops with his hand on the door. "It's Kelly's birthday."

"You say that like it's an explanation," she yawns, half-heartedly kicking the blanket off. "But if you've got something planned, I want in."

"Oh, you're part of it," he assures. "This mission is all hands on deck."

"Mission?" It only takes the few steps from the bed to the door for the sleepy haze in her eyes to be fully replaced by an expression he's much more familiar with. "This wouldn't have anything to do with yesterday's suspicious shopping trip, would it?"

"Maybe."

Fred and Linda are already in the kitchen when the two of them arrive a few seconds later. Bowls, spoons, spatulas, and various ingredients are arranged immaculately on every inch of available counter space. Linda nods a greeting.

"Okay." Fred begins, crossing his arms. "Kelly will be returning from her run in exactly two hours and...fifty-six minutes. We're splitting into teams. Team Bravo—," he motions to himself and John, "—is in charge of the cake. Team Delta—" he points at Linda and Cortana, "you two are the lookouts and the distraction, if needed. If we're not done by the time she gets back, you get her out of here by any means necessary."

Linda's eyebrows twitch higher. "Any means?"

"...within reason. Use your best judgment."

Cortana shrugs, immediately navigating around the baking paraphernalia for a coffee mug. "Easy enough. I'm fine letting you boys handle the hard part."

Fred and John share a look. "I'd rather be following step-by-step instructions than trying to wrangle Kelly away from anything."

"Assuming we'll even need to." Linda swings by the coffee table to grab a book on her way to the porch. Cortana follows with coffee several minutes later.

Fred cracks another egg. "We'll have this done before she's back, right?"

John shrugs, measuring out the sugar. He can't resist the joke. "Don't worry about it. It'll be cake."

Cortana returns from the patio two hours and forty-nine minutes later with her empty mug. “Linda’s up on the roof. She says she spotted Kelly about five minutes out. Status report? Ooh, frosting.” She swipes her finger into the bowl.

John ‘tsks’ but doesn’t try to stop her.

“We’re close enough that we shouldn’t need any drastic diversions,” Fred answers, cracking open another box of candles. “Give us a little bit of a buffer when she gets here.”

“Yessir.” She steals another finger of frosting on her way back out.

After a couple minutes, John sighs and sets down the knife. “This is the hard part.”

“Looks good to me. Ready for candles?”

"Mm. Frosting’s thin on this side."

A swell of voices and footsteps from the patio sends them both into an instant frenzy.

"It doesn't have to be perfect, just put the candles in. That's an order."

"You're pulling rank now?"

"I told them to stall, not divert, remember? We have thirty seconds. If we're lucky."

"You know I am."

"Well I'm not, so it probably cancels out."

John places the final few candles and grabs for the lighter just as the voices on the porch reach the front door. Fred does his best to lean against the counter in a way that hides the cake. The door opens.

"Damn, it smells really good in here. Did you bake a cake or something?"

The click of the lighter breaks the silence of the beat that follows. Fred slides away from the counter. John motions to the cake, now visible. "Happy birthday."

Okay, so being at home (and ill!) has given me some time to organize my thoughts ahead of time for 2024, because I want to clean house a little bit across the board. Consider this a little informative post that'll simultaneously function as my to-do list to complete by the end of the year. In essence, I've seen the phrase 'do what makes you happy' enough times in the last year and a half to two years, that I think it's time for my donkey-level stubborn self to finally listen to it. So I'm going to do just that, and also, I'm going to clean house. In order of importance, where you'll find me most commonly, and what I'll work on getting up and running, this is the game plan:

Yelan: This one will hold most of my priority by a landslide. Fontaine, let's go. Kafka: I have numerous starters/replies/meta and replies waiting, and these are not on hold out of disinterest; I simply need to organize/give into my priorities. Kafka is near and dear to me, but Genshin as a whole is more my home than Star Rail. Bear with me, I have every intention of running her alongside Yelan). Me at self: Old theme/resources blog (x) needs urgent work.

And then, I have the secondary game-plan:

— Guizhong: She'll return, but I'm, very sadly, in a little bit of a mental lock here. Stay tuned! — Zhongli: This is the big surprise, I suppose. I'm finally giving in. He may not come very soon as my current focus very much lies with Yelan in specific, but especially when Lantern Rite 2024 inevitably hits, I know the tears will fall, my heart will warm and I will be a mess. There were a plethora of reasons as to why I never made him, but— times and things change, friends are joining the Genshin crew (hi Lottie, I love you) and now, there's so much reason to. Besides, how can I not write the man who's kept the dream alive? Stay tuned x2.
