Help needed with HD cards! Updated 5th November 2024

As you may know, the official twitter account hasn't been posting the HD cards like it used to for a while now, so right now I have two ways of obtaining them:

Saving them from the tweets players can make when obtaining a new card from gacha or special lessons (awakening)

Take an in-game screenshot of a card (HD is only available if I own it)

What this means is that currently I won't be able to get a HD version of any unawakened, non-gacha card that I don't own, which is why there's some cards I haven't posted. Mainly this means the monthly pass rewards, but also applies to any event cards that I've missed.

| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 5.01 - Double Down

Words cannot express how much I love this scene… I mean, what a way to start the episode - and the season! This serves as a perfect reminder of the seismic shift that happened in A Day in the Hole… and as an acknowledgement that this was more than a mere kiss, no matter how many times Tim and Lucy want to pretend otherwise. Their reactions made that very clear, be it right after their makeout or the morning after. And Lucy's dream emphasises this again, as it takes place a few days later. They're still affected. They're still reeling. Although, technically, this isn't the first time Tim appears in her dreams… Back when she was a rookie and fell asleep on their night shift, he was already present in her mind, in his full sarcastic and sassy glory. Even her dreams showcases the growth of their relationship...

But the way she is smiling in her sleep… So much for this being just a kiss! She is absolutely enjoying replaying that moment. With her boss. Not her boyfriend. And what makes this even better, is that this isn't the same footage. It's the same angle, same ambiance and all… But this is a steamier version. One where Tim is being more assertive and emboldened. Her dream is so telling… It does get interrupted in the same manner than their kiss. Tamara is nothing if not consistent. Lucy being so flustered, caught off-balance, looking a bit guilty proves how far gone she is.

Thankfully for Lucy, Tamara doesn't bring that up yet, giving her some time to recover. This part of this scene tends to be overlooked with everything that goes on, but that Tamara wants to be there for Lucy is so touching. She did something similar for her for the prep trial. She tries to act casual, giving her some options on how they could spend the day together… Just so she wouldn't have to think about it or be by herself on this day. Something that is incredibly thoughtful because Lucy wouldn't necessarily confide in her, to avoid burdening her. I like that she has a support system… Better yet, that this system is one she created herself. This is exactly what she would do without question if their roles were reversed. These two have such a deep connection and love for each other, it's really heartwarming.

But the teasing is never far with them… And Tamara can't help herself the second Lucy mentions her undercover op. She is having too much fun at her expense… And honestly, who can blame her? 'I already told you that kiss didn't mean anything'… Says the woman who was replaying that kiss in 4k full HD in her dream a minute ago… Who's the lying liar who lies now?! But it's the fact that apparently Tamara brought that kiss up before that sends me… The way Lucy says 'I already told you' makes me think that they've had this conversation several times in the past few days. And not just after Tam got home that night. Her shit eating grin says it all… 'Make out. Stop crime'. So iconic. Once upon a time, Tim told Lucy that 'cop eyes stop crime'… Talk about a different approach.

'Have a great day. With your boss. Who you kissed'. I could quote this whole exchange, this is so hilarious. And I like that it shows how comfortable Tamara and Lucy are with each other. That they are family. Who teases mercilessly each other. For kissing their boss… Who has to deal with something quite similar...

[Review] Sonic Lost World (3DS)

The better Lost World?!

Dimps made some of my favourite Sonic games: Advance 2, Rush, Rush Adventure, Generations 3DS... not only have I now played them all, their handheld companion version of Lost World is the final Sonic game they've developed. And they went out swinging, because this dinky SD game shows up Sonic Team's console effort in many ways.

As with Unleashed, this version shares much with the higher-spec console game: the soundtrack, visual design, cutscenes (albeit crunched to 240p, and some have been removed). Broadly speaking the concepts are carried over as well, but a shift in focus and some gameplay tweaks make this a more playable and enjoyable experience.

For a start, there’s still a run button but Sonic runs faster by default and conserves more momentum. The homing attack is streamlined: back on the jump button where it belongs, and the kick is replaced by an arc projectile with a more clear situational use against strong enemies. Wallrunning and climbing are more useful and easier to maintain due to a mechanic that lets you extend them with a spin. The spin dash has slightly more use too but that’s more down to level design, which I also find more engaging.

Compared to the Wii U version, this game is more like a puzzle platformer. There’s still plenty of running fast and the platforming is challenging and involved, but they pack in a lot more interaction in these dense levels. Elemental shields are now given in levels rather than through the inventory system, and used to open alternate paths by protecting you from hazards. Wisps are also utilised better (including a few exclusive to this version) with some extended sequences that require and explore their powers.

Even the helper feature is implemented better here. Instead of simply whisking you ahead in the level, dying a few too many times offers you a relevant power-up like one that auto-attacks enemies, makes you intangible to damage, or gives you higher and floatier jumps. This version also actually has special stages which give a motivation for grabbing and hanging onto rings until the level’s end. They play out with Sonic flying in 3D space and are very gyro-heavy which was troublesome and made me dizzy at times but they’re a nice novelty.

I do have issues with some other choices. Taking a page from Colours, Wisps are now unlockable and so some can’t be used on your first run through a level. Gyro is now non-optional for some sequences including certain boss fights and Wisp powers. There’s also a tacked on crafting system where Tails can make you items from materials gathered by playing levels, but it’s entirely ignorable. The Streetpass feature sort of plays into this; people send you their best runs of individual levels (which you are now ranked for) and you have to beat them for the reward of more materials. Having cut the side missions and minigames I found I didn’t miss them but these replacements aren’t much better.

Although the Zeti remain boring, with lazy and stupid designs, they at least have slightly less of a presence here. On Wii U they would talk at you sometimes during gameplay, displaying more of their shallow and broad “personalities”, and have two boss fights tacked onto levels per world. Here not only are their fights improved but they’re relegated to a boss fight act. This means there’s fewer levels overall but it’s worth the compromise. The final lava world is also nothing but a boss rush, a slightly underwhelming change although I suppose it gives a more climactic feel.

With Unleashed and again here, I’m glad my completionist tendencies prompted a look at these alternate versions because in both cases I prefer them to the leading HD iteration! Dimps did a great job especially considering the 3DS’s weaker hardware necessitated cutbacks on the scope. In fact that just makes Lost World 3DS more focused and streamlined, on top of the improved controls and puzzley tendencies. They even did the gravity gimmick better here, I reckon! I hope Dimps gets another chance with Sonic at some point but if not they at least have a strong legacy, and this is a fine way to cap it off.

On modern technology and air disaster in fiction

I've already written about how dated the Airport 1975 plot would be just for its sexism, but we also have smartphones and internet everywhere now, so a lot of the obstacles in the film don't work anymore in 2024.

Nancy the flight attendant in the film had to rely on radio communication and verbal instruction, but Athena can call 911 or anyone else on the ground. Don't worry about cell service, most airliners have wifi onboard, you can stream a whole Netflix series in HD over the Pacific Ocean. If at least one of the autopilots is indeed able to keep the plane in the air, whatever flight instructor or engineer on the ground can simply send pictures and/or videos to tell Athena which buttons to press.

In Airport 1975, you can see a third flight crew member working behind the two pilots:

That's the flight engineer, his job is to monitor and operate the complex systems on a giant plane. You don't see them anymore in the modern days, because their job has been replaced by computers.

Alan Murdock, after he tethered into the cockpit said he couldn't tell which systems were working as so many of the instruments were damaged. I can see why it was the case in the 70s, with the flight engineer dead no less.

This is the cockpit of an old 747, you see how many analog gages are there? Now, this is an A330, the one Athena is supposed to be flying on:

All the instruments have been replaced by screens and buttons. You see the two screens in the middle? They are the displays for a system called ECAM. It tells you exactly what is wrong with the aircraft and all the steps to resolve the problems. The Boeing version of this system (EICAS) only shows you the issues, you have to pull out relevant checklist on your own, but this Airbus system lists out exactly what you need to do. Athena can absolutely snap a picture of the ECAM screens and send it to someone knowledgeable on the ground. They will tell her what to do.

In fact, that's probably the reason why you don't really see an Airbus aircraft in an air disaster film. If it's a Boeing, at least you can show the pilots grabbing onto the yoke, fighting for their lives.

You don't really fly an Airbus with your hands... You fly it with your wrist. It just looks so anti-climatic.

There was a Qantas A380 in 2010 with an uncontained engine failure that severely damaged one of its wings. That rendered a lot of flight control surfaces inoperable, more than 80 ECAM messages popped up, so what did the pilots do? Hand fly the plane like an ace and heroically bring it down to safety? Nah, the captain did manually try to keep the aircraft stable, but the first officer just pulled out a keyboard and typed away. He had to deal with all the ECAM messages before they could turn back to the nearest airport. He was just there typing for an hour. To a pilot or an avgeek who understands how bad the situation was, it would be very suspenseful, but to a casual viewer looking for some air disaster flicks, that would be super boring.

Finally, and most importantly, modern airliners basically have the ability to land themselves, if the wind condition and the destination airport has the technology for it. Tom Scott has been talked through a successful landing in a 737 simulator before. I assume it would be even less challenging on an Airbus. If the conditions permit, you can land it without touching anything, in 0 visibility.

Of course there're going to be damages to Athena's plane preventing it from flying normally, in order to play up drama. Well, she may not land it that smoothly, but comparing to the 70s, aviation technology has come such a long way that she can probably get it on the ground in one piece.

Chao Attributes

After a newborn chao is hatched, I'll ask for name suggestions, and run a poll based on the replies to that post and any suggestions sent via the ask box. These will not change post-reincarnation. I'll also run a poll to determine each chao's pronouns.

Chao will not be mistreated on purpose (except for hatching via throwing because it's funny). I will also use a variety of characters to raise each chao, mostly depending on its alignment.

Alignment and first evolution will be determined upon hatching and again after reincarnation. Second evolution will be determined after the chao cocoons and becomes an adult.

Chao will be raised to max level in each incarnation. Prior to first evolution, they will be raised to at least level 20 in their intended primary stat, 0 in the opposite stat (unless affected by animals), and at least level 10 in all others. Chao whose primary stat is intended to be stamina will be raised to at least level 10 in all stats.

For animals, to simplify the process a bit, we'll first vote what animal group to give them (chaos drives only, swim, fly, run, power, random, mythical, and ghost). Then, if one of the animal groups wins, we'll vote on what specific animals to give them, either 10 of just one, 5 of two, or 3 of each. I'll alternate which ones I give them so they can have a variety of traits. Afterwards, I'll balance their stats to the desired influence and minimum levels using chaos drives.

When all of our current babies and young adults have reached a stable point (waiting for first evolution or reincarnation), we'll vote on whether to add a new chao egg to our garden via either breeding or the black market.

Gameplay

Primary gameplay will take place on the PC version of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I am playing with the Chao World Extended Mod, and some other miscellaneous ones. I also have access to various other tools, such as Krzys2's Chao Editor, but cheating/editing will be minimal for more authentic gameplay. Basically, I will only use it to view chao stats, speed up the garden's timescale (if needed), and correct mistakes.

I have not yet decided how we should handle races, karate, and lessons; I'm open to suggestions on that.

The boy himself, Fledge

Fledge, of course, is the scrawny guy you meet at the start of skyward sword. He attends the knight academy, but is apparently flunking bcs he's not allowed to be in the wing ceremony. If people weren't always bitching about skyward sword, people would have called him a "precious cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure" in 2014. *gunshot*

Fledge facts!

"Fledge" is of course a play on the word "fledgling", a bird that's not quite a baby, but not quite ready for the world. Like how fledge isn't quite a beginner knight, but isn't ready for the wing ceremony

In skyward sword (2011), helping him move the barrels in the intro nets you 20 rupees. Skyward sword HD was changed so that saving Mia would net the rupees, because people tended to ignore fledge and miss the rupee. However, you can still get fledge's rupees in the HD version, netting you 40 rupees in total, enough for a shield if yours breaks

Fledge isn't just pushed around by groose and his gang, but also Pipit in the intro, who does it with good intentions, but the implication is that everyone but link pushes him around at least a little (maybe link too, depending on the player)

Fledge is one of the few skyloftian NPCs to not react to the goddess statue falling after skykeep

Fledge is a drug addict

After kukiel is found, most NPCs immediately change their dialogue from being worried abt kukiel to their default, depending on where link is in his quest. Fledge on the other hand, will have to be told abt kukiel for this to happen. Meaning you have to talk to him twice on two separate days (go to sleep) to start his quest if you don't need talk to him after

Fledge headcanons:

Due to his lack of physical strength, fledge favors the bow and other ranged weapons

Stamina potion tastes like limes

Fledge is one of those people who doesn't know what they wanna do with their lives so they pick a career path based on something they're moderately good at. He'd probably be happier making potions

Fledge is an outsider, kinda. I also headcanon that there are people who live on other floating islands and send their kids to skyloft, and this is what happened with fledge. But unlike the others, he didn't have any childhood friends in skyloft, so he feels disconnected from the group

From home theater enthusiasts to computer gurus, you won’t find many electronics buffs who don’t applaud the advent of HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connectors. In the days of analog audio and video, the end user was forced to send these signals separately to video displays and audio equipment, with video typically transferred via component connections and audio sent through multiple RCA cables. When digital audio and video arrived, hobbyists and professionals alike were able to connect devices in different ways, including through DVI, SPIDIF, coaxial and, finally, HDMI, the latter of which promised a new era of connection flexibility and installation ease.

And, make good on that promise HDMI did – indeed, finally there was a connection type that could pass all manner of audio and video signals over one cable, rendering home theater and commercial installation projects a proverbial cinch to complete while eliminating the proverbial rat’s nest of wiring previously associated with large installs. From A/V receivers and satellite/cable boxes to Ultra HD televisions, projectors and beyond, HDMI was often dubbed the best thing to happen to the connection cable world.

Yet as the HDMI spec evolved, so did its application blueprint, to the point that we’re now looking at which is better DP or HDMI for LED video walls, which is the topic of discussion for this article. We’ll be focusing on understanding both these choices, how to choose the right one for different applications, the difference between resolution and refresh rate and more.

I. Understanding DisplayPort and HDMI

HDMI and DisplayPort are two standards for connecting devices such as computers, laptops and game consoles to televisions, monitors and projection systems, and each come with advantages and disadvantages. While HDMI, as we suggested above, is the reigning king of compatibility and convenience, power users often cite things that are more appealing about DisplayPort.

These competing display connection standards transmit – as we also hinted at in the introduction portion – both video and audio signals over a single male/male cable to respective female ports on the source device/display, albeit with different “pin” patterns. They’re both physically sturdy and easy to connect, boasting backward and forward compatibility; HDMI uses standard and mini-connectors while DisplayPort uses DisplayPort, Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort and USB 3 connections.

DisplayPort wins the spec war over HDMI, even though not all ports and cables are the same for both, given that they have several version revisions. Let’s now take a brief look at some technical details for these connectors.

HDMI boasts four revision groups as of 2021:

• 1.0-1.2: 4.95 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 1080p at 60 Hz

• 1.3-1.4: 10.2 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 1080p up to 144 Hz and 4K at 30 Hz

• 2.0: 18.0 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 1080p at 240 Hz, 4K at 60 Hz and HDR

• 2.1: 48 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 4K at 144 Hz and 8K at 30Hz

DisplayPort boasts five revision groups as of 2021:

• 1.0-1.1: 10.8 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 1080p at 144 Hz and 4K at 30 Hz

• 1.2: 21.6 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 1080p at 240 Hz, 4K at 75 Hz, and 5K at 30 Hz

• 1.3: 32.4 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports 1080p at 360 Hz, 4K at 120 Hz, 5K at 60 Hz and 8K at 30 Hz

• 1.4: 32.4 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports up to 8K at 60 Hz and HDR

• 2: 80.0 Gbps of data bandwidth that supports up to 16K at 60 Hz with HDR on and up to 10K with HDR off at 80 Hz

Another important factor to note before we move on is that an HDMI port can only connect to one screen, while DisplayPort features Multi-Stream Transport (MST) for multiple screens and daisy-chaining. Further, DisplayPort can connect to four screens at once – though because DisplayPort splits bandwidth between the displays, results will vary depending on the setup.

III. Choosing the Right Option Based on Application

The market availability of HDMI 2.1 – the latest spec – compared to DisplayPort 1.4 is a statement of its use case, market share and how likely you are to find it in retail stores. DisplayPort is readily obtainable in the market, but is limited to workstations and gaming for the most part; this is why it has been the ideal data transmission cable among gamers for years.

On the other hand, HDMI 2.1 can be leveraged for different use cases and settings, though it is also popular amongst gamers, workers and individuals running high-resolution monitors and televisions – including LED video walls.

III-A. Resolution and Refresh Rate

Knowing the type of resolution your preferred cable supports is an important factor that needs to be considered before purchasing any, especially if you already have a display technology you intend to utilize. To put it more succinctly, DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K resolution at 120Hz and 8K resolution at 60Hz, while HDMI 2.1 supports these resolutions at better refresh rates with a maximum resolution of 10K.

When we speak of “refresh rate,” we’re referring to how often a display device shows an image within a time frame of one second. This figure is measured in “hertz” (Hz) and determines whether there will be lag and increased latency in a video output or not; for example, if a transmission tech boasts a refresh rate of 60Hz, it means it draws or displays 60 images every second. In the HDMI vs. DisplayPort debate, both have impressive rates, but as the resolution under consideration increases, the refresh rates drop significantly. DisplayPort max refresh rates exist in 1080p resolution, and as the resolution gets higher to 1440p, the refresh rate drops to 144Hz and to 120Hz for 2K; conversely, this is quite different from HDMI 2.1, which boasts an overall maximum refresh rate of 240Hz. The difference here is that HDMI 1440p max refresh rate is the same as 1080p and 2K, which is 240Hz, yet the HDMI 4K max refresh rate stands at 120Hz.

III-B. Content Source and Cable Length

The DisplayPort standard pegs optimum data transmission at approximately three (3) meters of cable length, however, the cable can be extended up to 20 meters while allowing, at the very least, a high-definition resolution. The HDMI standard does not specify exact dimensions and capabilities in terms of cable length, though generally they’re shorter than DisplayPort cables and normally come in two (2)-meter lengths for optimum performance.

DisplayPort may not be commonly found on mainstream devices such as gaming consoles, monitors, graphics cards and televisions, but its connectors are common in devices priced higher than average, such as gaming monitors and high-end graphics cards. HDMI connectors come in four sizes – standard, mini, micro and automotive – with each serving a unique purpose; standard HDMI connectors or Type A HDMI connectors are typically used by corporations and personal users. They connect source devices such as gaming consoles and Blu-ray/Ultra HD Blu-ray players to monitors, televisions and projectors.

III-C. Additional Features

DisplayPort connectors have 20 pins, with two sizes available, the standard DisplayPort and a smaller alternative made by Apple called Mini DisplayPort; the latter is the same port as the Thunderbolt variant. While HDMI connectors are typically comprised of 19 pins, the lesser-known Type B variant boasts 29 pins and is used for dual-link applications, whereas the Type E has a locking tab to keep the cable from vibrating loose in automotive applications.

III-D. Compatibility

A question we often hear is: “Can I connect a DisplayPort to an HDMI monitor?” and our answer is always the same – yes and no.

For the record, a DisplayPort signal is not compatible with HDMI, but if the DisplayPort output is a dual mode variant, it has the ability to recognize and adjust the signal to HDMI when a passive adapter cable is connected. From our experience, sometimes this will work and sometimes it won’t; if the DisplayPort graphics card is only a single mode variant, then you must use an active adapter or converter.

Both HDMI and DisplayPort technologies have improved dramatically in recent years, and that shows no signs of slowing down. Between HDMI 2.1 nearly tripling the data rate and bandwidth of version 2.0 – and doubling the capabilities of DisplayPort 1.4 – and expanding support for other visual enhancements like dynamic forms of HDR (Dolby Vision/HDR10+) for richer colors, variable refresh rates for smoother gaming, reduced latency for gaming, faster source media switching and enhanced audio, the future is definitely in the hands of these pin-oriented connectors.
