How to draw like you no borax

Good question!

I'd warn against following my process (at least if you want to learn), but I'll be honest and show you, lol. (Heads up: this is just how I do FAN art. When having fun, I generally care less about the fundamentals.)

1. I slap down super rough sketches, jotting lines/expressions like bullet points of my idea. Pretty much stick figures with just enough detail to remember who's who later. Not shown here, I also move, resize, and add details to express the intended composition if I'm planning something larger. You may notice a lot of curved lines / haphazard circles.

2. I refine the sketch by drawing it with more intention and build structure with slightly blockier shapes. If I'm really struggling with a pose, this is also where I'll find references or look at myself for bits and pieces to fill in the gaps. (When practicing, I would highly recommend using a reference from the start so all your limbs are an appropriate length and you don't need to say things like "that's passable" right before posting. If you're a perfectionist you'll leave that thought with the rough sketch.)

3. I'll decide around here whether or not to leave the sketch as is or commit to lineart (not likely). I guess I'd say I "shape the lines" here by going over some to add thickness/weight, and by adding basic sort-of-shading to break things up a little. Then I'll just fill in space if the page looks empty. (Usually this is where I incorporate the borax, but I hear baking soda works nicely if you're worried.)

4. Onto coloring. I don't feel confident enough to pretend I know what I'm doing here, lol. I just choose my base colors, imagine the general direction of the light source, then add minor gradients to the light and dark layers so they don't look flat. Then I just add some BS highlights and outline them. I've only recently found the motivation to properly practice coloring and just go with the flow tbh.

You may notice that Nami's forearm is too long, her hand looks like a pancake and Chopper has no joints! My kind sibling explained to me once that my anatomy is poor, but cohesive enough that nothing stands out too bad, lol. That's why it is important to use references!! And if you're me, practice all parts of anatomy at the same time with full bodies so that even when you're at a loss, your hands aren't that much better than your feet.

All in all, to draw like me, just have a very hedonistic approach to art, ha. Draw what you want, avoid getting burnt out on any single piece (sometimes that happens when you try to perfect drawings one at a time), and follow my personal motto:

Make fun, not masterpieces.

I can't fully say I'm an expert on the field since I'm still learning myself :D but here are the tips I can give on how I draw them

Notes: • Pear Shape-Star Shape/Teardrop shape • Give lines some weight- It emphasizes the softness of the character's body • ARMS- at first I didnt draw them plumpy, i got a comment saying the arms were thin so keep in mind. Fat gets distributed in the body, could be more on the belly or breasts or legs •BREASTS/CHEST- Gaining fat means gaining chests, but I don't think thats thats the case every time. While I see a lot of chubby characters being portrayed with heavy sets of jugs, based on my observation its not always the case and really just gives this idk weird portrayal of bodies that chubbs=big chests....hence the PEAR shape. •OBSERVATION and REFERENCING- This is the MOST IMPORTANT one. While I got used to drawing them without looking up references, it is important to work closer and learn more by observing side by side references to understand how body fat works. I think my works are still flat, having a reference gives you an idea how to approach on drawing it. •FACES/HEAD- I think I didnt change anything much with how I usually draw them. In my case I really like drawing them very cutesy like. The proportion of the face is smaller compared to the head giving an impression of (?) chubby face (dont know if I worded that correctly). •LINES- I tend to avoid sharp lines on chubby characters. I always try to make them look soft. •WEIRD TIP: How I actually learned is that I realize its like I'm drawing chibi characters but making them full(?). Rambles about the design under the cut!

Sooo the previous designs *sigh*. I’ve never posted them, but here they are now!

The one on the left is the first one I did and tbh, It wasn’t that bad it just wasn’t where I wanted it to be (I REALLLY hated it at the time) I also don’t think I did a good job with the color palette, it the green and purple just clash so bad with everything else it’s just AAAAHHHH! I made it around the time the trolls hyperfixation, so it’s also kinda old now, ngl.

The second one, I hate. Hate may be a strong word but that’s how I feel. While I still took a lot of the elements from that design into the current one, I still think that it’s pretty bad (especially the hair). At least the colors are good! It just felt too much like someone cosplaying him rather than him, ya know?

And an issue with both of them I have is neither of them really had his body type, correct. I was still learning how to draw body types more similar to his and I was just kind of struggling.

Outfit Stuff

In the current design, I tried to lean into a sort of swimwear look without actually giving him a swimwear. So for his crop top I took inspiration from those full-body suits that a lot of surfers wear (photo above, for reference) and made the neck part (idk what it’s called) very fitted.

I also gave him sandals to fit the swimwear theme.

I also gave him those scene arm things (idk what those are called either) because rave clothes seem to have quite a bit of overlap with the scene aesthetic. I also made his pants low-rise and gave him a crop top for this reason. It also gives the separation between his top and pants a bikini-esqe look, feeding into the swimwear theme.

Gave him some chains for his pants since that is in line with the aesthetic as well.

Hair + Other Physical Features

Designing his hair was pretty simple, I gave him dreads and tied them up in order to emulate his cannon hair.

So I'm going to post some of my old art on here bcuz it's bad(in my opinion..Well not that it's bad it's just old and idk what to do with it so I'm gonna post it)

At this point I finally learned how to make the canvas bigger so that the drawings don't look blurry (I also knew abt layers existence too)

sorry for nagging you but i wanted to ask if you have some tips on making comics. I’ve trying making many comics but i always lose motivation and can’t seem to get past even the first panel sometimes.

I did make a pretty long post here, with some advice for starting out! But that’s more technical I guess, and it sounds like maybe you’re looking for some motivational advice? So in addition to that post, I’d say…

Don’t look at these panels where you’re stuck as failures. Look at them, instead, as first drafts!! Keep the early planning stages loose, so it doesn’t feel like an arrow to the heart if you have to make changes. Many artists need to see their thoughts collected somewhere before they can refine things and move on to the next stage. Another big thing is learning to be okay with throwing those drafts away when they become more of a roadblock than a step towards that awesome, final version you’ve got knocking around in your head.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spent an hour plotting the composition of a panel…or maybe I’ve gotten too focused on the little details of a character’s expression, but the rest of the shot has just….idk died. I’ll copy and paste what I did like, and delete what’s not working or I’ll completely start over, no fuss. Wipe my hands of it and refuse to look at it as a failure. If I drew it once, I can draw it again! Practice isn’t time wasted, it’s time invested into growing! Drawing is drawing!

It’s always good to look back at your work, so you can see your improvement, but only focusing on your unfinished pieces might be doing more harm than good.

And maybe, you don’t have to draw a full 10 page comic from the get go! Try experimenting with shorter form comics! You can tell quite a number of stories in just a few panels! Learning the ins and outs of something new is a lot easier to accomplish when it���s done in smaller increments. That way you can have that feeling of success more often and it’ll motivate you into not giving up!

When I started EW, I was doing parts in like, one or two pages! Because I was still nailing down the comic techniques I wanted to employ. I was gathering brushes and learning how and when to use them! Learning how to create compositions that worked around dialogue bubbles! All the boring parts of comic creating lol. But then, the more comfortable I became with those techniques, the less time they took, and I could really go wild with the creative aspect! Now my updates are much longer!

It’s just a process. But at some point, all the advice and resources in the world can only help so much. You have to be willing to put in the time!

I’d say it’s kinda similar advice they give when you start working out. When you’re first starting, and you try to do more than your body is comfortable with, you’ll be in a lot of pain and won’t want to continue. It’s easy to give up if you’re not seeing results and you feel like you’re wasting your time. But if you start in a reasonable place, and let yourself learn as you go, then you can gain good habits and it’ll get easier!

And only then, when it’s easy, that’s when you challenge yourself! Not when you’re already struggling with just starting! Or it won’t be fun and all of your drive will disappear!

And that’s really what you’re doing this all for, right? For fun!

how did you learn to draw and feel comfortable drawing bodies and figures? I was curious to your own experience, since theres an overwhelming amount of ways to go about learning.

just by doing ! i collect lots of ref images and also use my own body as ref for poses (then mentally edit the body to fit the character im drawing)

though there's something to be said about. 1. the Becoming Obsessed With Something method in my experience, and 2. Finding a balance between motivating self to start, and waiting until its you Feel ready to do so ^_^

i learned to draw and feel comfortable drawing the human body by going section by section (was fixated on drawing isolated arms and hands for some time in high school, in between still trying to draw whatever (full bodies) i wanted as usual. i barely started really learning to draw legs last year. i didnt feel Ready or Motivated to focus on them before then, and now I can actually piece all of that together, and draw in a more Informed way than before) as well as just actually having genuine fascination and fixation on the human body to drive this. I love the body! I want to depict it well!

More au stuff cause I can't be bothered drawing rn. Im gonna be talking more on Jack and Alex (my oc I ship him with cause yknow I'm cringe)

Jack's love language is gift giving and physical touch. He kicks his feet in the air at the thought of kissing Alex like some squealing teen girl. But of course, he acts nonchalant about it, gotta keep your cool

My Jack is like a Disney princess. He can sing and talk to animals. Idk. I thought it would be funny if he would just occasionally get into arguments with random family pets. Dogs just barking up a storm about how he needs to get his striped ass out of their house while Jack just cusses them out. Also, with him being more of a demon, he can also possess people's bodies along with talking to them from inside their heads.

Jack's an old man, and he LOVES watching action films. He's like a lil kid at heart, and usually, when Willie comes by, they both watch Transformers together on Alex's TV while she's at work.

For someone who has been starving since the 1800s, he sure is a picky eater. He doesn't like tomatoes unless they're cooked, doesn't like pickles, and don't think about trying to sneak some green beans into his stew, he'll pick em out. That's just the tip of the iceberg, Alex is having to learn, and she's half tempted to strangle him at times.

He's a hand full but you gotta hand it to him he's willing to change for her, but the fear of losing her is still in the back of his mind. He also likes to annoy her if she's not paying attention to him, just the look on her face no matter how threatening she's trys to be he's just gigging away cause "oh she's just soooo cute~".

So I also ended up making this this afternoon

So basically the story behind this is that I decided “eh screw it, I said I’d try making that megop kid idea, might as well try making some helm designs to start out with”. And I made a bit of one for TF One, though specifically inspired by their cogless designs since I’ve drawn them a fair bit

But then it dawned on me that outside of TF One, I haven’t actually drawn that many Megatron and Optimus designs. Like I drew Animated Optimus like a couple times when I was starting out, but that’s it. And also the idea itself doesn’t really work with TF One, since as it stands the war hasn’t technically even broke out yet. It works far more in a series where it’s actually been happening

So I figured, I should start at the basics and get myself some practice on g1 Megatron and Optimus, since you know, they’re the classic designs

Also side note on g1 that isn’t really related but I wanted to add in anyways, today I got the complete set of the g1 cartoon (minus the movie but that’s okay). It was a Christmas present that was supposed to come earlier but finally came in today. And I learned my PS4 can play Blu-Rays (which really shouldn’t be a surprise, I’m aware that’s what made the PS2 sell so well, but I didn’t realize they kept doing it), so that means I am now able to watch g1 on an actual TV, legally, with presumably higher quality, and possibly even subtitles

So you know, I’m doing pretty good right now. I’m glad my dad is supporting my Transformers fixation and the fact that I’m insisting on using a DVD player (for the movies at the library, but still), which means actual DVDs

Anyways, side tangent aside, back to the drawings

I think they turned out fairly decent, they don’t really bother me. I do kind of wish I added shading/lighting so the drawings weren’t so flat, but regardless

Admittedly I think I do need to work on actually doing poses and things with these designs, I’m doing a whole lot of nothing with them right now. I need to pose those cubes

Also there’s some colors shared between the two. I don’t know if this is something actually done in the show, and maybe it makes the colors look inaccurate, but I think it’s neat to use the same colors elsewhere

Now on to random things about the characters’ designs I just wanted to mention

First off, this isn’t really a character design thing, but these were the pictures I used for references, outside of some concept art I have for full body basic anatomy (getting screenshots from the show is my preferred form of reference), and I gotta say, it took a fair bit longer to find a picture online with a proper look at Optimus’ head than Megatron’s

Like it didn’t take that long, like 1-2 minutes, but I just noticed how a lot of screenshots don’t really focus on his face, unlike Megatron. I assume because in g1, he doesn’t really have much of one, given his mask covers half of it

Also while Megatron’s helm itself is relatively basic looking and doesn’t really have a lot going on, the rest of his face has got a fair amount of details

Like he’s got defined cheek bone lines (I think), but he’s also one of the few (again I think) characters to have the shadow around his eyes that becomes more common later on

Then there’s also that whatever he’s got going on above his eyes. I’d say it’s eyebrows but I don’t think that’s what it’s supposed to be, given these characters don’t really have those yet

I saw someone, aka the person who makes Transformers Until One, granatu888 (idk if I should tag them here or not), turn the thing into a battle mask that drops down onto his face, and frankly I think that’s really cool, and that’s what I now choose to believe it is. Hasbro, make that what it is

Anyways, moving on. I don’t really have a lot to say on Optimus other than his helm being a lot more simplistic in its shapes than I’m used to, as well as very triangular. Like compared to TF One Optimus, who’s got a lot of details going on, his is super simple. I also didn’t make his antenna full triangles going down because I thought it looked weird, now they’re more like TFA Optimus

Also one last thing, but I swear the way I drew him looks just like that how one artist does, the one who draws Sparkplug (sorry, unlike the last mention I don’t actually remember the artist’s name, probably because I don’t follow them. Which tbh I should probably rectify, I like their Sparkplug stuff). Sorry it was just something I noticed afterwards and can’t unsee it. This also applies specifically to the face, they draw the actual rest character much better than me

Anyways, back to Megatron. Random thing, but he’s got a whole control panel on his torso. I’ve known he has it, because he has it in TF One, but why does he have it?

This kind of goes hand in hand, but random other thought I had today that connects, his design in general is a bit off compared to other characters because in g1, he doesn’t transform into a vehicle, he turns into a gun. Like that’s not to say he looks out of place (I mean I still think his helmet looks weird), but like, he doesn’t have a lot of kibble because of it. Like he’s one of the characters with no glass on his body because guns don’t have glass

Also does he have two guns? One on his shoulder, another on his back? I don’t know, I’m only now realizing that. They probably combine together when he transforms. Also I think his fusion cannon is just supposed to be his scope in gun mode, which ironically I’m pretty sure aren’t actually involved with the damage part of shooting. I don’t know, random observation

And uh, I think that’s it. It was mostly just random design details, and honestly not as many as I was expecting. I didn’t really have much to say on the art itself, mostly since it was just me trying to draw the g1 designs

But yeah, it was neat, I think I have a better understanding of their general designs, at least here. Now to actually use them in any way

HIIIII ( ͡❛ ₃ ͡❛) I just wanted to say I LOVE your art and your art style, honestly it's a huge inspiration for me as an artist and I'm so glad to have found you and your work! I wanted to ask you how did you learn your anatomy and how you draw clothing? Like possibly any tips you have or anything. Your lines in a lot of your work are so flawless they just mold together like clay to create a masterpiece at the end 😭

Hiiii!! I'm not an expert so please don't take my word for granted LOL

I got taught anatomy on college ( ´ ω ` ) I had to do insane amounts of bone and muscle studies for months (individually and full body) + simplification of dynamic poses into shapes/mannequins. It also helped me a lot to look at myself in the mirror and look up references for how the muscles, tendons (etc idk) move when you flex and stretch and allat

And for clothing tbh i never know what im doing bahaha, I feel like I need to improve a LOT in that area. But what I was taught was to focus on where the weight of the clothing is located. It's good to have in minds at which points the clothing creases (armpits, knees, how the chest folds depending on the textures). Also to do a lot of studies and once again simplify into shapes.

My most important advice is not to memorize just how it looks but how it works!!!! to look at your drawing like a person, it has volume and shape and its tridimensional!!! how does it move? how does it look from different angles?? I'm not an expert and I like to just wing it most of the time but it really helped my art. have a wonderful day!!!
