#I was going to make an art piece for this (and still might) I just realised that I can also do the next best thing

This here is part of the reason I took a break from tumblr for a bit (I’m still on break, I’ve just seen this post many of times while dropping in to add stuff to my queue)

Fic writers and artists are not machines, we are real people who are trying to engage in fandom by sharing things that we make about characters that we love. Likes are fine, appreciated even, but tumblr is not a like-based site. it is a community, how content is shared is based on how the community treats it. And if the community doesn’t share things, it doesn’t get seen.

Which, don’t get me wrong, I’m for the most part content with just my mutuals and such seeing what I put out, but at the same time, when you put a LOT of effort into something and people don’t acknowledge that, that shit’s going to hurt. Just is. And whether that lack of acknowledgment comes from it not getting to a larger group of people, or the people who do see it not ‘pushing’ it further, it’s hard to tell because that’s how screwed up the tumblr ecosystem is at this point

I’ve seen beautiful pieces of work (fic and art both) go from being unnoticed/few notes (3 to 4 total), to literal hundreds because of a couple reblogs (just a couple!), and it’s more than well deserved!

if you want to see more lovely stuff from cool people, you have to tell them, you have to encourage them to do so, and you can do that just by hitting the reblog button, leaving a comment, or sending an ask, just give us all something to work with is all we're asking

Doesn’t have to be something complex or well thought out, can just be a simple ‘hey I like your work!’. With reblogs, you don’t even have to say anything! Sure it might not be as helpful, but at this point, baby steps make a huge difference

If you’re someone who doesn’t like reblogs on your blog, which, depending on how much original content you post I can understand, you want your stuff to be seen too, make a side blog just for reblogging! It’s quick, easy, and you’re helping people out

Otherwise, it can feel like shouting out into a void and hoping someone hears us. And that’s the anthesis of what fandom is, that’s how fandoms die

My fifth Ahsoka Tano redesign, this time it’s her Rebels outfit.

It’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these; this was actually drawn last year, I just never posted it XD •_•.

But anyways….

I wanted to do something completely different from her Rebels design this time. While her official outfit is fine, it’s still a little too simple at the same time; that might be because of the animation style, but I’m not going to be excuse that.

Now this is going into some AU territory here….

For starters, I gave her a Jedi Temple Guard’s uniform. I mixed different variations from, I believe, The Clone Wars concept art, to kinda symbolize that she had to scrap together what she could find.

The mask as you can see is broken so that it can fit across her face.

Cloth covers almost all of her head-tails for secrecy.

The skirt portion splits at the sides for easier movement.

The reason why I put her in a Temple Guards uniform is so that she could hide her identity from the Empire. And also because, I highly doubt that being Anakin Skywalker’s padawan didn’t make her recognizable on some degree. (also her face was plastered everywhere across Coruscant at a point).

Another point for her hiding her identity is that if the Empire discovered that Skywalker’s padawan survived, she would be hunted down mercilessly.

I did keep her Togruta cultural pieces, since she is easily identifiable as a Togruta and I don’t think you could figure out who she is based off of that.

The head piece is based off of one of Padme’s concept designs. Although I forget from which movie I’m afraid.

Now for the lightsabers, I had the idea that Ahsoka would try to find other Jedi survivors during this time. But all she finds are discarded lightsabers, if she’s lucky.

The white lightsaber in the middle is, Plo Koon’s.

The two on the left are, Katooni’s and Zatt’s.

The two on the left are Aayla Secura’s and Ki-Adi Mundi’s.

She uses a different saber every time she encounters an a Inquisitor, while also trying to use different saber forms as a way to shield her identity.

2024 Recap & 2025 GOALS

Well, well, well.... Look who it IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello my friends.

It is I!!!

To say it's been a while since we've really talked would be an understatement. This bitch rly went fckn off the radar that second half of 2024. But I'm happy to say I am making my debut once again and I am back on the scene!!!

I hope the start of 2025 has been going well for you all <3 I'm happy and excited to say that after a grueling 2024 and relaxing holidays, I'm finally back and ready to get to WORK on Alaris! I thought a nice way to get back into things would be a big 'ol yappy post in true Crescence fashion so that you all know exactly where I, and Alaris, are at as we enter the new year :')

I'm excited to say that while I don't have a set date yet...

Alaris WILL be releasing this year even if it kills me.

Just as my big year goal in 2024 was to graduate and I used every ounce of inner strength to make that happen, finishing and releasing Alaris is my big goal this year. I've kept you all waiting long enough, and I'm confident that Alaris is at a point that we'll be able to do a release this year. Of course, if this changes, you all will be the first to know. But I'm very hopeful that we can make a 2025 release happen ^^

That being said, I think it might be nice to do a 2024 recap so we can see just how far the project has come, even if I was shoved off the face of the earth in the later months of 2024 \o/

Last year, we actually finished ALL the writing for every route except for Aisa's! Meaning we reached 300k words of writing for the game and only have 50k words left YEEAAAAAA. And all routes are written up except for one! This was a huge milestone for me since I still remember when I finished the first 50k for the game with Kayn's route all the way back in the beginning. And we're finally nearing the end.

I've always considered writing the hardest part of game development so to have finally reached a point where almost all of the writing is finished was a huge achievement for me last year.

We also made HUGE progress on the art front last year ^^ Not only did we finish all of the backgrounds for the full game, we also got a new GUI, updated sprites and CGs, and a new promo piece in anticipation for the release of the new demo.

We also made progress on CGs for the full game, which I will not be showing because spoilers and those are special nuggets Patreon and Kickstarter backers get access to hehe. But we made about 16 finished CGs last year, getting us to a total of 22 CGs and about halfway through our CG count!!

Last but definitely not least, we actually had a good amount of releases last year (considering I got fckn bodied in the second half of the year) ^^

In 2024, believe it or not, I actually released the extended version of Intertwine! It featured new music, slightly more polished programming, and almost double the writing :') And with this release, we saw Intertwine get a lot more love throughout the year and actually reached 200k plays and 1k ratings (crazy numbers I never thought I'd see in all my days). So thank you all for continuing to love my fated child <3

We also released the enhanced demo for Alaris last year, featuring a polished script (with some revised dates), partial voice acting, custom OST, new GUI, new BGs, updated sprites and CGs, and much more! This was an exciting milestone for me since it felt like we finally were approaching a release that reflected what the full game would feel like, and I couldn't have been happier with the release :') It meant so much to me that old and new players enjoyed it as much as they did and really gave me the motivation endorphins to keep chipping away towards full release

And then, perhaps the most exciting of all, Alaris entered its BETA ROUTE ERAAAAAA!!!! We kicked it off with Kayn in honor of hot girl summer, but made our way through half of the LIs with Kayn, Fenir, and Druk each getting their own moment to shine \o/ The reception to these routes was super motivating since players finally got to experience content I'd been working on and keeping to myself for almost a year, and I've been so happy seeing people fall in love with the LIs in in different ways :')

Usually I do a little recap with fanart I make of games I played throughout the year as well, but this year I wanted to do something different and dedicate this little section to YOU ALL!!

In 2024, the Alaris community was blessed with fanart, memes, character questions, and more :') For some reason, 2024 was the year a lot of you decided to really show your love for the game, and it's one of the biggest things that's maintained my sanity, and the reason I love working on the game. While I can't show all the fanart everyone made, I wanted to take a second to show some love

I know I dropped the ball near the end of 2024, but I hope you all know how much seeing fanart and people engaging with Alaris means to me. I hope this year I can be better at recognizing and fostering the love in the community for all of our LIs, and I can't wait for another year with you all!

I've seen your posts about AI. I also know it's a pretty polarizing topic and what the majority opinion is, especially in regards to art and writing. And being an artist myself, I totally agree that it sucks, like you have to pay attention and all, but.... I hardly dare to say this because I know how emotional the discourse around AI is, especially on a platform like tumblr, which sometimes seems so strong that I don't participate in a discussion about this topic at all because I feel like people here would hound me for it, but I still use different AI software, but not in the way that I use it to create something that I can publish and pretend that I spent hours creating it myself. I think it can be really helpful.

If I need information about something quickly, it's more efficient than spending a lot of time searching different websites for a particular piece of information.

I also like to think of it as a group member when I'm working on projects. That doesn't mean that I get the ideas from it and then just copy them. In the same way that group work is beneficial, you pass the ball to each other with the AI and exchange ideas that you can then develop further. Or it can help you if you're looking for another word to describe something better, like a dictionary. And I still know how to use real dictionaries or do proper research, because I know that AI can make mistakes and you shouldn't believe everything. Just like it is with information from the internet in general. Anyway, now I come to the actual “confession”, which is that I also use it, not to let the AI create the art, but as a tool to help myself creating it. I usually use reference images for drawings to help me get the scene itself or the anatomy correct etc. Andy capture it properly. But sometimes I have a very specific scene in mind and can't find a suitable reference, and it can take me hours to find something that fits. So I like to use AI to create that reference for me, because unfortunately I don't have people modeling for me and personally it helps me extremely to have examples to work from.

Idk where exactly I'm going with this. But since the general opinion on generative ai seems very clear here, I wanted to finally get this off my chest because I always kept my moth shut being afraid of how others might react, even though I think that my methods are still quite legitimate, as I still do the real work myself. Anyway, I'm looking forward to your opinion.

You know my opinion on AI. I’m not going to tell you you’re a terrible person or anything for using it, but I’m also not going to justify your personal decisions. Instead, I invite you to change your perspective.

My opinion is this—and it’s more of a question: why are you creating the art? I’m going to hit a few of your main points and just pose questions because I think this gets to be more philosophical than a cut-and-dry “if you use AI, you are a bad guy.” Because I don’t think that—I also don’t think you should use it.

The reason I don’t blame people for being attracted to using AI is because as human beings, we’re designed to find the most efficient way to do things. Thinking and using creativity is a huge caloric expenditure. Right? Naturally, we’re attracted to ways that things can be done FOR us and reduce our cognitive load. Your brain is working as it was designed! But this is also a really cool way to take away your voice and mold you into someone who cannot think for themself.

(This is also what you’re doing by “confessing” to me. You’re unloading your cognitive/emotional burden so you can keep on doing the thing you know is probably a bit shady.)

First of all, I don’t know you, so I don’t know what your art training is. However, you need to train your brain to start coming up with stuff on your own. I am really sorry, but I don’t buy the “I don’t have enough references.” When there are free resources like Unsplash.com and even just looking at buildings around you, the furniture in your house, etc, you DO have the references. But you need to learn how to use them. This is a tool.

Second thing, if the reference isn’t exactly what you need, then you need to start learning volume and shapes. You need to study anatomy. Eventually, you will be able to look at a reference and understand how perspective works and be able to transform a reference in your head to what you need. OR - start combining references. If I’m doing a full scene, I probably have about 5-6 reference photos I’m working from. This is a tool.

Third, start taking photos of yourself for reference images. If you can’t find what you need, do that. I periodically have to go into my camera roll to delete the god-awful reference poses for myself. This is a tool.

Fourth, start a collection of things that “strike you.” Start a reference blog. Have a folder filled with images that intrigue you. Personally, I take an insane number of photos when I’m traveling. For example, I went to a mansion for a tour and took photos of all the early 20th century objects and rooms so I would have these in my arsenal. This is a tool.

My fundamental question is this—why are you having an algorithm create what’s in your head for you? Why not learn how to do these things instead? Your imagination is so cool. The process of creating is making happy mistakes. What do you think Bob Ross would say to you? When you use AI, you’re just copying. The imaginative part has been done for you. You’re just a tool of the robot.

We do so much to avoid frustration, but frustration is the part of creating. When we can see the skills we need to learn, that’s how we know we’re improving. It means you’re trying, and when you press through that discomfort, that’s when you grow. Stop seeing this as a block to your end goal but as an opportunity to continue your infinite journey as an artist. Celebrate that there are so many beautiful things to learn.

Additionally, please don’t see AI as a group project. A group project indicates that all parties involved consent to participate, and I know most artists do not want their art to be used in this way. Imagine if you learned to do all the things I’ve described above and taken time/years/frustration/love to develop these skills, and someone years later then took your work and said “It’s okay - we ALL contributed to this.” It’s just not true.

The artists you see online don’t simply sit down and draw a bunch of cool stuff without practice. I watch Youtube videos of professionals. I draw a gazillion sketches of just MOUTHS or hands so I can create my own references in my mind. Why would you deprive yourself of this?

Look, I think it comes down to this: if you’re looking for efficiency and ‘getting it done’ quickly, then why are you doing it? Are you enjoying the process? If you aren’t, why are you even doing it?

If you need a robot to imagine something for you, then you don’t actually want to do it.

I had someone DM me recently asking for tips for creating an SU sona and drawing in the style, which is one of my favorite topics to think about and discuss!! I'm definitely not the end-all-be-all of SU style replication and have so much to learn, but I wanted to share my method for anyone interested in creating SU art! So here's a Steven Universe Style Replication guide!

Before you start:

Gather LOTS of references. references EVERYWHERE. I have a google drive folder specifically for Jasper references, but I plan on having folders for each character as well. If you know you're going to draw a specific character a lot, gather references!!!

also, gather references of characters you base your S/I on physically. my sona has traits from both Steven and Connie's body types, so I used photos from their references when creating mine - I specifically used Connie's turnaround as inspiration for the height/posing of mine!

((you don’t HAVE to create a turnaround ofc, but thinking of your sona as one that needs to “follow the rules” of the other characters’ designs can help creating something that looks proportional and accurate!))

Colorwise, it’s fun to consider your f/o or the characters you interact with before creating an outfit palette -> I specifically use yellow as a base color because of the way it meshes with Jasper’s orange pallet, as well as being complementary to Steven’s pink and Connie’s blue

Drawing:

SU has the benefit (and curse) of inconsistent style and size references. it's partially proportions to the other characters, yea, but it's more in the shape language you use when drawing in the style, which is why references are so helpful! 

(unrelated but I love how this shows how much I still struggle drawing jasper.... even after six months straight of exclusively drawing her. sigh.)

take these drawings I threw together! these are four completely different characters, but they all feel different because of the shape language used:

even with my own style bleeding in, really focusing in on what their core body is expressing is what demonstrates the character.

this translates to creating your own sona, too - think about how your sona would fall into the shape language. my sona is similar to Connie, but a bit curvier and stockier, which shows especially in the core of the character design!

I know the "belted shape" concept has gone around this fandom for years, but I'd recommend not depending on it as in my opinion it doesn't translate nearly as well as just a general concept of the form - like how it doesn't work as well with Peridot when she becomes tiney

[obligatory PSA that anatomy knowledge/practice helps so much here - I've been drawing SU for YEARRSSSSS but my understanding of the forms got so much better when I started practicing gesture drawing/anatomy practice]

Expressions/facial anatomy:

so again, SU has so much style inconsistency that the way you draw expressions will vary based on the boarder - this EXCELLENT because this means expressions are really easy to pass in the style! but some visuals anyway:

most of the time, faces are extremely simplified with one guideline across the face, a little bit higher than where the "cheek" starts if the character has a cheek

if more masculine, the guideline will be a bit higher and the eyes will be shorter

an interesting note with Spinel specifically is that her eyebrow expression is done through her hairline, which is part of her really fun 20s inspired look!

Lineart:

i feel like if anything really makes something look "canon", it's how the lineart is done in a finished piece. if I compare with a couple fake screens/edits I've attempted:

the lineart makes all the difference here!!!!

for specs reasons if you're curious, I use procreate with the "baskerville" brush on a higher stream line setting. I do not have pressure sensitivity, so all of my lines are hand-weighted, but if you have pressure sensitivity you might have an easier time here!

facial details tend to be slightly thinner. eyes tend to be a little bit thicker on either the top/bottom or sides, although it depends

outer borders, major clothing, outer hair tufts and other major features are the thickest lines

sometimes lines aren't used at ALL for various features (gem facets, some more minor clothing details, like the bottom of Lapis' top or the waistline on Jasper's uniform)

the key part with lineart and style replication, though, is that is varies WILDLY by style. as long as you have some line weighting it's really easy to get it to pass as SU style

lastly I HIGHLY recommend practicing screenshot edits or fake screenshots if you can!!! I feel like the silly edits I do really help emphasize my understanding of what it takes to make something look like the style, and my little journey into making fake screenshots/"canon" screenshots is a big part of how I've learned to draw in SU style!!!

Starting off easy, huh? Let me tell you, this was quite the challenge (having never written for them to start with), but also good practice, so thank you! About the pairing: though my mind immediately went to Cruz/Aaliyah (because let's face it, who wouldn't want them to have such a chance), I realized that a story like that deserves way more words and context than a short drabble can offer. So I went for another approach. Hope you like it!

Cruz & Josie - Can We Start Over?

About to enter the bedroom that over the past few months somehow turned into their bedroom, Cruz abruptly stops on the threshold.

Dressed in nothing but a sports bra and a pair of shorts that might as well be her briefs, Josie is doing some serious number of pull-ups; the sight of it being enough to make Cruz gasp for air. With bent knees, ankles crossed steadily and knuckles white from their tight grip, she works her body like a machine, showing off those strong biceps, rolling shoulder blades and tight back muscles in one synchronized dance. The beads of sweat are there for the finishing touch.

Gazing at the piece of art in front of her, she completely forgets why she's here. But then her mind wanders back.

Cruz doesn't mind conflict. Doesn't care what people think of her. Growing up with nobody understanding, appreciating, even liking her, she learned early on how to stand tall without any of that. How not to need anything, whether it was from her heartless parents, her heartless classmates or—later on—her heartless lovers. It's a simple fact to her, something she doesn't consider a problem. She could still have her fun, sometimes even more than that, with others, without having to win them over. Hell, they could hate her for all she cares. It doesn't upset her.

Usually.

Today is different. This morning she and Josie found themselves in their first argument, their first real confrontation. Not some bickering about who should buy eggs or what movie to watch, but a full blown fight, with screaming and shouting—largely from her part—and eventually walking away from it all. From her. The woman she's barely been without since Sky Hawk.

Once away, Cruz threw herself into her usual coping methods. Pushing her car to its limit. Making noise at the shooting range. Downing an ice-cold beer, and then another one. Yet no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake off that feeling she'd left the house with. It stuck to her like a hot and humid summer storm. Heavy and suffocating. Which could only mean one thing.

She cared.

Not just about the subject, although it was a serious one, but about the fight itself. About the way she'd left Josie behind. Sad? Angry? Maybe even hating her?

That thought alone was what's killing her. And enough to soldier up and go home.

Still lingering in the doorway, she clears her throat, making Josie glance over her shoulder, right in the middle of another pull-up. The intense face expression that comes with it is hard to read.

"You're gonna yell some more?" she asks, eyes forward again.

Cruz shakes her head, even though Josie can't see her. "No, I'm... I just..." She bites her lips to stop from stammering, then inhales deeply through her nose before trying again. "Can we start over? Like... can we talk?"

Josie lets go of the metal bar and lands on her feet like it's nothing. Like she didn't almost lose her leg three months ago. The thud makes Cruz flinch, while Josie doesn't seem to feel a thing. She turns towards her, which throws Cruz even more off balance. The woman has abs like a Greek statue.

"You hate talking."

"I don't, not anymore," Cruz shrugs awkwardly, "Not with you." She takes a step into the room. "I'm just really shitty at it."

Silently, Josie sits down on the edge of the bed. Cruz steps further into the room, grabs a sweater and—somewhat reluctantly—hands it to Josie to keep her body from cooling down too fast. When Josie takes it from her and puts it on, Cruz knows she'll listen to her - or at least wants to try.

"I don't want you to go on another mission," she starts warily.

Josie rubs her forehead, suddenly looking tired. "You said that already."

"Yeah," Cruz nods, "but I didn't say why. Not really."

When Josie looks up, their eyes meet. "So why?" she asks with hers.

Cruz shrugs again. "I'm scared."

"Right," Josie snorts, "That would be a first!"

Cruz knows that it isn't. That her indifference knows one exception. One exception that nearly broke her, so badly and almost irreparably that she swore never to go there again. Never to get close to anyone again. Boy, did she fail.

"Look," Josie goes on when Cruz stays quiet, "I know it's dangerous, but it will be okay. Joe's got my back."

"No, she doesn't!" Cruz exclaims, making Josie blink by the unexpectedness of it. She quickly calms her tone, forcing herself to keep talking as intended. "She doesn't. Not when it comes down to it. You'll be collateral damage. That's what being a Lioness means."

"Yet you had no problem with it." Josie's reply sounds like a statement, not a question.

"I wouldn't say that," Cruz sighs, "But yes, I went. Because I had nothing to lose." Squatting down in front of her, she rests her hand on Josie's knee. "But now I have."

"Cruz, it's my job."

"No, it's not. Flying helicopters is. You're a pi—"

"What are you asking me?!" Josie cuts her off, "Quit the army? Flying tourists over the Grand Canyon instead?!"

As Cruz drops her shoulders, a small groan escapes her lips. "No, of course not. The army is your life. And mine! I know that. It's just... there are limits. Or there should be. Right? When you've got what we've got..."

"And what's that?" Josie asks, raising her brow, "What do we have, Cruz?"

Cruz falls quiet. She doesn't have the words. She's never been here, never made it this far. How's she supposed to know?!

Gently palming her cheek, Josie makes her look at her again.

"We have started a life together," she helps her out. "Just like that, without even trying. We're not just you and me anymore, somewhere we became us." She moves her hand, tucks Cruz's hair behind her ear. "I think we never intended to, so we're a little unprepared, but here we are after all. And it's not a bad thing. Not at all. It's just new. And—"

"—terrifying?"

"Oh yes," Josie chuckles softly, "terrifying as hell. Especially in our line of duty."

Slowly shaking her head again, Cruz heaves another sigh. "I don't know how Joe's doing it. Or her family. How they handle all this."

Josie slides off the bed, pulling Cruz with her so they end up on the floor together. "Me neither," she admits, taking Cruz's hand into her own, "But if they managed to find a way, than so can we. If we want." She averts her eyes, before quietly adding, "If... if you want?"

Just like their lives, their fingers entwine together as by itself, soft and slowly. "I do," Cruz whispers, her warm breath caressing Josie's face, before inching even closer. As she goes on, her lips almost graze Josie's damp skin. "I want to figure this out."

Leaning in, Josie can feel Cruz's mouth trail towards hers. "You know what?" She brushes her tongue against Cruz's bottom lip, before teasingly searching for her ear. "I think we already started."

When Josie starts to nip at her earlobe, Cruz can barely form words anymore. "W- We did?"

"We talked, didn't we? Turns out we don't suck so bad," Josie breathes. Without pulling away, she turns Cruz's chin towards her with the lightest touch of her index finger. "That being said..." she grins, right before finally connecting their lips, "I think we should shut up now."

I just think it’s silly that so many people complain about Villain Amaya as “wasted potential” and that “we were robbed” like-

My pals, post canon fan fiction is right there. The desire to free her husband is right there. Either by touching an evil book while being too eager to remember the obsidian oil, or being possessed by contact (ie what she believes is true loves kiss) when trying to reason with him in the dungeon.

We don’t need a rewrite, we can have a continuation. Both can be true. Amaya is a complex character, she can handle it.
