I’m currently a teacher (elementary, middle, and high school; I used to teach classes of adults too, but due to technical difficulties I can’t do that right now), and where I can I let kids have fun and be creative, and it is even LESS fathomable to me now than it was when I was a kid that teachers are Like This.

When I was in sixth grade (twelve, old enough to have to pay full price at movie theatres and on airplanes, legally allowed to stay home alone and be paid to babysit), our teachers cited the SR&R’s drug policy to thoroughly search everything we brought to school (‘personal property’ apparently wasn’t a concept that applied to kids, though try to look into a teacher’s desk or touch one of their belongings and see how quickly they demonstrate a thorough understanding of it. No wonder we all turned to internet porn in high school). Every item was counted, catalogued, and, if deemed excessive or unnecessary, confiscated.

Anyone with more than four pencils was allowed to keep four (4) and had the rest confiscated. To this day I don’t know where the extra pencils went. Anyone with more than two highlighters had the extras confiscated, and that one was even less explicable, because teachers didn’t have a basket of extra highlighters they kept around in case students needed one (every teacher had a case of extra pencils, but they were all freely donated to the school by some corporation with its website printed proudly along the side, and then the teachers would complain that we used so many of them). For all I knew, they were robbing us to sell our possessions on the black market (not exactly an *efficient* way to make money, but I suppose on a teacher’s salary every bit helps. I would know).

I’d brought a pile of snacks (snacking helps me concentrate, school lunches were sized just large enough to prevent starvation, and I attended an after-school program with no dinner and long hours to fill with homework and exercise. I was still too young to be a latchkey kid back then). I didn’t take them out at school, of course — our eating was carefully policed, and woe betide anyone who took out so much as a peanut while a teacher was talking — but they were necessary for the hours after. But a roll of cookies and bag of carrot sticks had not been on the school supply list. So, naturally, these went into the teacher’s pile as well.

This might be sounding a tad familiar to some folks in the same country where I went to elementary school. Police do this, too, when there’s an especially valuable item. It gets a fair bit of coverage, but nobody does anything about this, since we don’t want all those nasty dangerous criminals after us doing things like forgetting to watch their speedometers. I suppose teachers are in the same boat. Parents might complain, but they don’t really want to be forced into the nasty dangerous occupation of homeschooling.

And another commonality might be the desire for power driving folks into both professions. Genuinely believing you’re a hero who’s going to save the public/the youth/both, taking a job to do just that, and heaven help anyone who criticizes you, because you certainly won’t. Me, I’ve known I was a villain from the start. That’s why I became a teacher — I wanted to undermine all that law and order, actually. Encourage some anarchy; it builds character. Go ahead, bring three highlighters to school. Bring five. Write six paragraphs for a five-paragraph essay. Color outside the lines.

The Children-Protectors of Texas can rattle their pitchforks all they want. But they haven’t managed to catch me yet…

My interests tend to come in intense bursts and then fade. Unless something like, big happens like it gets a reboot its unlikely I'll be coming back to it anytime soon. As for the fic I don't have any current plans to finish it unfortunately.

me: i finished the latest trailblaze mission in hsr so i can look at what other people are posting now! oh boy i hope it's discussions and theories about the story. i can't wait to see what everyone thought about firefly (what was going on with you sweetie...) and A Child's Dream - that segment in particular really left a profound impact on me. like who is mikhail? the voice we hear throughout is obviously misha's - did he have a twin? does mikhail have something to do with clockie? and from what we heard and saw, misha or... mikhail. encountered the embodiment of Death that lurks beneath the dreamscape. what's... the full story there...? i can't wait to see other people's perspectives it'll help me piece a more coherent theory together-
