i think the most unreal thing about the sequel trilogy isn't anything about rey… it's the fact that ben didn't know his grandfather
and i don't mean the fact that he was vader, but that, having proven the existence of force ghosts, i'm 100% sure that anakin would have done the impossible to keep an eye on his only grandson
(and cry to obi-wan for being so good to leia that he even named his son ben. obi-wan keeps an eye on him too, but less, he's dealt with enough skywalkers in life to continue stressing out in death, even if baby ben doesn't do any crazy maneuvers yet)
(i imagine him flying toys and spaceships over baby ben to make him fall asleep, and when he grows up, teaching him mechanics and how to deal with r2-d2 and c3-po)
(leia wouldn't be too happy about that, but hey, she's a free babysitter and she knows how to deal with a sensitive little one. the force. anyway, if anyone can figure out how to shoot a ghost with a blaster, it’s her)
(luke has played mediator more times than he can count between father and sister)
so when snoke starts whispering to ben, well, the kid doesn’t pay much attention. he’s heard enough stories about the dark side from his grandfather anakin and his grandfather obi-wan to believe him blindly
and then the darth vader reveal happens. and the first thing ben does is not demand answers as to why he wasn’t told sooner, but laugh. because he finds it funny that one of the most feared creatures in history is the same one who disappears when his mother gives him a dirty look, who looks like a scolded puppy when his friend tells him something, who runs away from a green goblin so he doesn't hit him with a cane, and seriously, why doesn't anyone believe ben when he says he's seen darth vader's ghost cry during sad moments in romantic holo-movies?
and when snoke insists that his grandfather would want ben to continue his "legacy" of oppression, ben dismisses him and says "yeah, no. all my grandfather wants is for me to continue flying spaceships and fixing droids. oh, and also, the only thing he agrees with my mother on is that I should get a good girlfriend, marry her, and have lots of babies. for something they both agree on, i'm not going to ignore that!

Jedi culture & community fics, my beloved! They're a bit of a rare breed for what you're specifically looking for, specifically focusing on positive Jedi worldbuilding, so if anyone has genfic recs outside of the ones I know, please feel free to add them! But these should help scratch that itch for you, each of them has at least some focus on Jedi philosophy or how Jedi interact with each other or the lessons they teach! It's been awhile since I've read some of them, so there might be some that aren't quite as in-line with how I see the Jedi these days, but they're all ones I felt portrayed them pretty positively and they're all genfic (except one that I made an exception for) and all really lovely fics I remember enjoying for the Jedi worldbuilding aspects! And there are some that will make you absolutely melt with how much you love these characters and their beautiful culture, because by god if canon's not going to give us as much detail as we want, fandom will step up. And fandom made sure to not just focus on the disaster lineage--we love Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Ahsoka, we always want more of them, please don't stop writing Jedi worldbuilding with them!--but also Mace and Yoda and Quinlan and Qui-Gon and even some Jedi OCs get some love in these fics, which makes me want to explode with joy to see! So, come cry about how much we love the Jedi with me, I WILL GIVE YOU A CRAPLOAD OF FIC TO READ. STAR WARS & JEDI CULTURE & WORLDBULDING RECS YOU'LL FIND HERE:
NOVEL AND NOVELLA LENGTH
MID-LENGTH
SHORT AND YET SO GOOD-LENGTH
NOVEL AND NOVELLA LENGTH: ✦ Remedial Jedi Theology by MarbleGlove, obi-wan & anakin & jedi & cast, 51.3k     Let us consider the fact that the Jedi Order is a monastic religious organization based out of a temple, with five basic tenets of faith. ✦ Festival of Light by dendral, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka, 8.7k     During his first year at the Jedi Temple, Anakin learns that even the Jedi celebrate holidays. ✦ Out with Lanterns by SkyeBean, ahsoka & mace & jedi & clones & cast, 312.5k     In another universe, Jedi Masters Plo Koon and Depa Billaba decide a Padawan could do Mace some good. It takes a while, but he eventually agrees. When he takes Ahsoka Tano as his Padawan, Mace knows that he's broken through a Shatterpoint and changed the course of a life. How, he doesn't know. ✦ eat well; be well by gingerbeer, rainsoaked_benevolence (oceans_bluem), obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & yoda & depa & shaak & quinlan & aayla & cast, 18.6k     Or, (almost) all of the Jedi High Councilors (plus Ahsoka) gather to eat dinner together. ✦ Supreme Chancellor Obi-Wan Kenobi by stonefreak, obi-wan & anakin & padme & ahsoka & palpatine & yoda & quinlan & cody & cast, 126.3k wip     By an old Republic law, all members of the Jedi High Council are senators in the Galactic Senate, and can thus be voted in as chancellor. A Senator from a less prominent planet has had enough of Chancellor Palpatine's incompetence and calls for a Vote of No-Confidence and the installation of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. This one action becomes the catalyst that changes the direction of the galaxy. ✦ Pragmatics of the Jedi by aroacejoot, ghostwriterofthemachine, loosingletters, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & jedi, 31.3k     A series of fanfiction exploring the consequences and results of the Jedi having their own language, and speaking it still. ✦ light by loosingletters, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & mace & jedi, 56.1k     Anakin Skywalker is a Jedi and being a part of their Order means that he is protected and accepted. The war is over and the Republic has to recover from the crimes of the Sith Lord, the Jedi have to figure out what it means to be peacekeepers again and the Clones have to learn how to be more than expendable soldiers. ✦ When Darkness Seems to Hide This Place by IllyanaA, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & kanan & ocs & cast, 94.9k wip     After killing three of the Jedi Order's best and brightest, Palpatine's fight with Jedi Master Mace Windu goes shorter than expected. Afraid he's lost his chance at recruiting a new apprentice, Sidious unleashes Order 66 across the galaxy, but, per their programming, the Clone Army is not to harm Anakin Skywalker. After witnessing the most painful loss he's ever experienced and injured at the hands of his captors, Anakin is ready to die like the rest of the Jedi, though not before getting his vengeance.
✦ Knightrise by Deviant_Accumulation, obi-wan & yoda & satine & ahsoka & asajj & cast, 89.4k wip     "Strong enough to fight the Sith Lord, you are not.“ And just like that the fight drained out of Obi-Wan, the barely scraped together agitation running out of him like water from a broken glass. He looked at Yoda, the other Master already hobbling towards one of the back exits, his presence burning with focus, obviously expecting Obi-Wan to follow. ✦ Make a Brand New End by Batsutousai, obi-wan & anakin & feemor & qui-gon & yoda & mace & dooku & jedi, 118.6k     Feemor, Qui-Gon Jinn's first padawan, did not survive Order 66, but the Force granted him a boon: A chance to go back to days before Qui-Gon's death. He doesn't know why the Force picked him to remember that terrible future, but he's going to do what he can to change it. And if he can heal the rift fallen between himself and Qui-Gon, and finally get the chance to know Obi-Wan, well, he's not about to turn that down. ✦ Unexpected Awakening (The Rewrite) by Rhiw, obi-wan & qui-gon & bruck & feemor & cast, time travel, 135.1k wip     The life of General Kenobi is cut short at the hands of his Padawan, but the sight that greets his eyes upon awakening is not that of blinding light of the Force, but the Jedi Temple he knew when he was still a youth. As he struggles to understand the path laid out before him, Obi-Wan unwittingly captures the attention of a singularly unusual Temple Guard, and that of a reluctant Qui-Gon Jinn. ✦ No Rest for the Weary by orphan_account, obi-wan & anakin & jedi, 61k     Needing a break from life at the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, visit a Jedi AgriCorps settlement on the Midrim planet of Helia. There they encounter new friends, new enemies and have new adventures, all while attempting to navigate their sometimes turbulent relationship as Master and Padawan. ✦ The Moments That Time Remembered by CallToMuster, obi-wan & mace & vokara & bant & quinlan & garen & depa & jedi, 82.4k     Obi-Wan’s first memory was not his own. Rather, it was a vision steeped in darkness and flashes of red and choking heat and you were my brother and the harsh crash of lightsabers striking one another. He woke up sobbing in the arms of the crèchemaster, Master Kitaddik, who was hushing him and gently stroking the top of his head with her furry hands. Obi-Wan hid his face in the soft folds of her tunic and, still crying, fell back asleep. The first time Obi-Wan collapsed due to a vision was not long after that. [Or: in all the various iterations of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s life, the Force spoke to him. But in this one, it never stopped.] ✦ Starrunner by orpheus_under_starlight, obi-wan & jedi & oc, 80.2k wip     In what would have been the year 17 BBY, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine is found slumped over his desk, dead to rights and emitting a foul odor. The coroners declare the body victim to a heart attack and the smell a result of a lack of a timely embalming—a bit of bowels humor, the head coroner says with a nervous laugh when interviewed by the Galactic Enquirer.
MID-LENGTH: ✦ 飽了嗎? | Have you eaten your fill? by virdant, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & qui-gon & quinlan & yoda & dooku & mace & bant & jedi, 13k     The Force is the first language that Obi-Wan learned to speak, the brush of one mind against another. But food is the second language that Obi-Wan learned to speak with, and he talks, he talks, he talks. A collection of fics about food and how food is an articulation of love. ✦ We Will Abide by naberiie, plo & shaak, 10.3k     Light. Dark. Balance. Beneath the Jedi Temple, far below the chaos of Coruscant's Galactic City, ancient halls and corridors sleep in silent darkness. Padawans Shaak Ti and Plo Koon are determined to explore them. ✦ What Is My Heritage? by Marnie, qui-gon & yoda, 7.7k     Qui-Gon, age 13, tries to find a place to belong. ✦ Coming Home by Marnie, qui-gon & yoda & dooku, 18.1k     A story telling how Qui-Gon comes to be Dooku's apprentice. ✦ Master by CJinn, obi-wan & anakin, 27.5k     Obi-Wan Kenobi had always wanted to become a Jedi Knight. What he didn't expect was to become a Master merely days after his own Master died. Adapting to his new role as the mentor and Master of the quite unusual Padawan Anakin Skywalker became a bumpy road.
✦ into the statue that breathes by spoonks, obi-wan & feemor & cin & cast, 8.5k     The night watch in the garden was supposed to be the calmest of them all. No mischievous Padawans “sneaking” in or out, or ne’er-do-well civilians conducting “business” around the lower-level entrances that they didn’t know existed. No the gardens was still, and it was like time was frozen in ice that slowly melted away with the rising of the sun. A slow drip, drip— Drip. Immediately Feemor turned towards the central waterfall. Someone was standing there. Whoever they were, they were small and moved through katas with their hands open like a greeting. ✦ The Cave by Ria Talla (ronia), anakin & ahsoka & cast, time travel, 10k     Ahsoka Tano, post-Star Wars Rebels/? And there was something else, more important, though Ahsoka found herself loath to do it. Her lightsabers drawn, deep in the labyrinth formed by the stone warriors and the crumbled temple. Yet the words broke certain into her mind. Your eyes can deceive you. Her heart pounded, as though warning her otherwise. But Ahsoka withdrew her sabers, and closed her eyes. Rather than her weapons, she let the Force be her light. ✦ A Candle in the Night by phoenixyfriend, anakin/luminara & obi-wan, time travel, 12k     In which Luminara finds a heavily injured Jedi, nurses him back to health, and falls in love. Then they get back to the real world, and she just can't figure him out... ✦ Found Clan by silvergryphon, boba & ocs & obi-wan & anakin & cast, 25.3k wip     After the Battle of Geonosis, a Jedi Healer discovers young Boba Fett mourning the loss of his father. Not about to leave a ten-year-old boy on his own, she promptly adopts him with the full collusion of her Padawan. ✦ the heart of kyber by outpastthemoat, obi-wan & anakin & qui-gon & depa & kanan & jedi, 32.7k     Tales of the Jedi: Stories about lightsabers, masters, and apprentices. ✦ Stars of Tatooine by Be_Right_Back, ahsoka & mace & kanan & obi-wan & rex & cast, 10.5k     After the end of the world, Ahsoka more or less kidnaps a child, has to air some old grievances, and tries to find whatever peace the universe can still offer. All paths in the Force lead home, eventually. ✦ The Uses of a Sandwich by Laura Kaye (laurakaye), obi-wan & qui-gon & yoda & cast, 17.6k     A few months after being taken as a Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi faces a challenge: meeting his Master's first apprentice. ✦ Familes Found by fyrefly, obi-wan & anakin & ahsoka & padme & mace & plo, 8.2k     In a universe where "The Wrong Jedi" never happened, the war ends under different circumstances and perhaps everyone will get a chance at a happy ending after all.
SHORT AND YET SO GOOD-LENGTH: ✦ The Mathematics of Repair by panharmonium, obi-wan & anakin & cast, 4.6k     For raw teachers and rough-edged students building in the rubble: tiny steps are enough, provided they carry you in the right direction. Immediately post TPM, in short snippets. ✦ The Living Force; Parables for Padawans by glorious_clio, obi-wan & cast, 6.1k     Since infancy, younglings are taught the Jedi Code, “Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Chaos, yet harmony. Death, yet the Force.” Obi-Wan Kenobi learns these tenets backwards and forwards again. But even as a child, he is interested in nuance. And so his teachers tell him parables. ✦ A Jedi's Cloak ImperialKatwala, obi-wan & anakin & qui-gon & cody & rex, 6.4k Jedi cloaks are made for children. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a year and a half old when he first sees this principle in action. He is fourteen, twenty-five, twenty-nine, and thirty-six when he gets a reminder.     Or: Jedi cloaks are weird. Here's a series of events showing why they're made that way. ✦ the master, the padawan, the Force by skatzaa, kanan & depa. 1.4k     Caleb expects things to be different after Master Depa takes him as her padawan, but really, it feels like nothing really changes. ✦ For the Future of the Order by thetorontokid, obi-wan & qui-gon & cast, 3.9k     There are important lessons to be found in the Jedi Temple creche.
✦ Memories of Peace by Margan, obi-wan & clones, 2k     It's not quite flash training, but the Clones are used to learning fast. It helps that this is something that they actually look forward to learning, to putting into practice. Obi-Wan teaches the Clones how to make dumplings in the middle of war. ✦ Liberosis by Be_Right_Back, anakin & mace & yoda & jedi, 2.2k     The war is over, the Sith are gone, and there is now Anakin Skywalker's secret marriage to deal with. While love is a wonderful thing, some truths are hard to face, and letting go is the destiny of all Jedi. Or: the Council and Anakin clash. It doesn't go as terribly as it could have. ✦ Accepting Emotion by LazarusII, obi-wan & ahsoka, 1.1k     Dealing with the stress and anxiety of being a prospective Padawan, Ahsoka Tano struggles to manage her emotions. Obi-Wan Kenobi finds her practicing in the dojo, confidence in tatters. His words make all the difference. ✦ A Long, Long Time Ago by ruth baulding, dooku & qui-gon + qui-gon & obi-wan + obi-wan & anakin + anakin & ahsoka, 5.8k     A wisdom tale handed passed down through the generations poses troublesome questions for a line of masters and Padawans, from Dooku to Ahsoka Tano.
✦ Duet by Silver Sky 1138, oc & cin, 2.3k     Asha Scarsi, the Jedi Padawan who feels the Force through music, isn't half as good at lightsaber combat as she is at singing and mindtricks. So she's a little nervous when Battlemaster Cin Drallig calls her to the training room after class. ✦ The One Where Anakin Tries to Be Serious by GirlwithCurls98, anakin & ahsoka, 1k     Even though they're fighting a war, Anakin finds the time to lead his apprentice through one of the Jedi's sacred ceremonies. ✦ Obi-Wan and the Force by AwayOHumanChild, obi-wan & cast, ~1k     One of the first things Jedi Initiates learn is that everyone experiences the Force differently.
✦ Night Shift at the Temple by ReneeoftheStars, oc jedi & cast, 1.8k     A Jedi Temple Guard sees all, speaks to few, and has attachments to no one. One must be prepared for any threats that may arise, especially at night, while most of the Temple sleeps. ✦ The Orchards by Raven_Knight, obi-wan & qui-gon & cast, 3.6k     When young Obi-Wan Kenobi is injured on a previous mission, Qui-Gon Jinn refuses to accept further off-planet missions until his Padawan's recovery. Yoda assigns the pair an in-Temple mission of utmost importance while Obi-Wan heals. Master and Padawan welcome the change of pace. ✦ Tipping Point by Ria Talla (ronia), adi gallia & finis valorum & eeth koth, 3.3k     "I believe that if what's happening on Naboo is allowed to continue, the other member systems will wonder what they owe to a Republic that can no longer protect them." ✦ A Personal Touch by DragonHoardsBooks, obi-wan & anakin, 6.2k     New jedi padawan Anakin Skywalker realizes that there is more to being a jedi then he tought. Discovering a completely new culture will take time and effort, but maybe he'll make some friends along the way.
✦ Jedi Parables by Peppermint_Shamrock, jedi, 5.8k     Values are often passed down generation to generation through stories, parables, and fables. What stories might the Jedi teach their children? ✦ Songs for Little Jedi by soft_but_gremlin, mace & jedi, ~1k     The initiates are having nightmares, so Mace sings a lullaby to comfort them. ✦ a thin thread of hope by wrennette, shaak & clones, ~1k     Shaak Ti introduces some cadets to one of her favourite crafts, under the guise of training. ✦ rah kat by js71, obi-wan & anakin & aayla, 1.6k     "Aay’shee," Obi-Wan murmurs into her ear, rocking her gently, like when jaieh was off on a mission she couldn’t go on, so her jaieh-raheniel would take turns having her over at their apartments. ✦ Lessons on Attachment by Siri_Kenobi12, obi-wan & anakin/padme & cast, 2.7k     "Anakin once told me that a Jedi is actually encouraged to love." She said after Obi-Wan had settled. ✦ Straw Dogs by Cymbidia, obi-wan & jedi & cast, 2.9k     An old Jedi Master imparts some wisdom concerning Mercy, Balance, and the Will of the Force to young Padawan Obi-wan Kenobi and a gaggle of other younglings. On their journey home, Obi-Wan reflects on the last child he brought to the Temple and catches a faint glimpse of three possibly entwining futures. ✦ yellow, you're a dreamer by nightdotlight, jocasta & anakin (& obi-wan), 2.6k     Normally, it wouldn’t be unusual, but— Jocasta did not earn her post without listening, and from where she stands in the aisle, gaze fixed upon the back of the young child’s shaking shoulders, she can hear a sniffle reverberate around the space. There’s a child curled up in the corner of the Archives— and they’re crying. ✦ once upon a time (a long, long time ago) by thebitterbeast, barriss & mace & shaak & ki-adi & bacara & trilla & cere, 2.3k     The Jedi love children. It’ll be the first time I sit foveo with her!” She says that word— foveo— as if it should mean something to Anakin. It does not. ✦ A Friend Indeed by ExtraPenguin, plo & ahsoka, 3.3k     After their rescue of the colonists of Kiros, Ahsoka Tano's Master asks for her to be sent on a mission away from the front. She ends up being sent to the Deep Core with Master Plo Koon to investigate one of the first known locations of the Jedi Order, since abandoned. ✦ In which we burn bodies as bridges by GraceEliz, obi-wan & ahsoka & depa & kanan & ezra, 1.4k     Lineage mantras, and the processing of grief. ✦ Five Times Mace was There for Obi-Wan, and One Time Obi-Wan Returned the Favour by wrennette, obi-wan & mace, 4k     five of the many times Mace Windu offered Obi-Wan comfort over the years, and one of the many times Obi-Wan returned the favour
✦ as the dust settled around us by thebitterbeast, finn & jedi, 5.2k     Bravery has never been the absence of fear. Prompt: There is no emotion, there is peace. ✦ Adi Gallia, Master of the Order by Perspicacia, adi & jedi, 7.2k wip     Palpatine didn't expect it. It was too soon for that in his plans: which Jedi would have left the Temple under assault? But Adi had. Ashes in her heart, she had left the younglings and the elders and the wounded for her duty to the galaxy, choosing to stop the Sith instead of protecting her people. ✦ “The Padawan Chooses The Master” by lurkingcrow, obi-wan & anakin & cast, 3.6k     prompt: AU - The Jedi say “The Padawan Chooses The Master” Qui Gon lives, Obi Wan is very preoccupied, and Anakin is put into the creche as an Initiate to learn what he can until Qui Gon wakes up from his coma and gets yelled at by the Council. In the meantime, Anakin meets other Jedi Masters and when the Council asks him who he wants to be his teacher, his answer isn’t Qui Gon. So that whole interaction between Ahsoka and Huyang, where they talk about Sabine's choice to help the enemy find Thrawn (in hopes that she can then find Ezra) is clearly meant to be subtext for what happened with Anakin.
I mean change the pronoun from "she/her" to "he/him", tweak some of the names and...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... it's just blatant.
The parallels were already clear in the previous episode, as pointed out in this post here, and it still holds true:
Sabine's struggle with attachment mirrors Anakin's.
We know Filoni's whole stance on why Anakin fell to the Dark Side: he'll usually acknowledge that Anakin was ruled by his attachments, got possessive of Padmé, but then adds:
"HOWEVER is loving that way really that bad?"
"HOWEVER he never stood a chance because Qui-Gon wasn't there to teach him properly and be the father Anakin needed."
I've already gone into why both these statements don't track with Lucas' intended narrative here and here... but I wanna touch on this notion that "Anakin wasn't trained enough to make a better choice."
He was.
You know how we know? Because we saw him overcome his attachments before.
Tumblr media
We saw him explain the theory of the non-attachment rule, before.
Tumblr media
In fact, wee saw him pass down a lot of the Jedi lessons, in The Clone Wars, including being disciplined, following orders and not acting impulsively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The issue is that - while Anakin knows the theory, even has a few minor successes applying it - he never builds the self-discipline needed to master it because... deep down... he doesn't want to.
This is partially because you got Palpatine telling him he doesn't need to, molding him into an arrogant, power-craving person... but the fact remains that Anakin made the choice himself.
Which Filoni acknowledges, sure... but not quite. The difference between his thesis and George Lucas' is that the latter picks a stance and defends it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"He started out as a very loving and compassionate person. And as he progressed, it was his inability to control his temper, his inability to let go of things, and his quest for power that were his undoing." - George Lucas, E! Behind the Scenes - ROTS, 2005
Anakin fell because he was greedy, just like any one of us can be.
Cool. Filoni, on the other hand, doesn't seem to land anywhere.
He dances around the issue (as can be seen by the debate between Ahsoka and Huyang, with no clear winner) and merely questions whether it's as simple as that.
Clearly he wants to justify Anakin's actions to some degree... but y'know, the narrative considers those actions so reprehensible that Anakin gets friggin' burned alive for it.
Tumblr media
"I felt it was important that we actually see that happen so that we could see the consequences of these bad things that he did. […] He forces his friends to turn against him. Which is heartbreaking." - George Lucas, “The Chosen One” Featurette, 2005
Because Anakin's actions are not meant to be justified.
It's easy to see why Filoni likes Anakin. One of the earliest tasks he had when writing The Clone Wars was humanizing a character whose sole functional purpose was to carry out a narrative about how:
"Without self-discipline, greed [can] force a character off the path to freedom." - Micael Hearn, The Cinema of George Lucas, 2005
And Anakin is a very sympathetic character.
His flaws are flaws that we all carry.
Q: Is it fair to assess Anakin is kind of cursed by his own goodness/good qualities? "I wouldn't say that’s true. He’s cursed by the same flaws, and issues that he has to overcome, that all humans are cursed with. There's a lot going on there. [...] The whole point is—and the reason I started the story where I did—is that Anakin is a normal, good kid. And how does somebody who is normal and good turn bad? What are the qualities, what is it that we all have within us that will turn us bad?" - George Lucas, Star Wars Insider #52, 2000
But narratively, Anakin is selfish.
He doesn't want to save Padmé's life, he wants to save himself from the pain of losing Padmé.
Tumblr media
And while you're supposed to sympathize with him, you're not meant to agree with him. He's Darth Vader, the space nazi. He messes up and consequentially "leaves the Force in darkness" for 20 years, instead of ushering it towards the light in the chancellor's office, when he has the chance.
So to shift the blame and say that...
HOWEVER, Anakin didn't have the proper support system or training to make a better choice.
... when the whole point of the narrative is about taking personal responsibility and being selfless instead of selfish... well, it is missing that point.
He did know better. He just didn't want to choose better, so he convinced himself he wasn't able to.

Thinking about how hard the "Star Wars" prequel films dropped the ball in terms of female representation. Like, looking back on the original trilogy, it kind of sucks that the only main female character is Leia, and while Leia does kick ass and I love her, it also sucks that the last film 1) put her in that bikini and 2) abruptly made her Luke's twin but didn't let her have a lightsaber or use a lot of the cool space magic powers.
When you only have one female character, she often ends up bearing the unintended burden of a lot of hopes and expectations of fans. She's just one person. She's never going to be compelling to everyone.
And then you have the prequels and you'd hope that they'd do a little better with male-female ratios this time? With experience? But the only main female character is Padmé, who's pretty fun, but also ends up 1) desperately in love with a murderer, 2) spending most of the last movie barefoot and pregnant, staring out a window, because they cut the "founding of the Rebellion" plotline, and 3) dying not because she was Force-choked but because she has "lost the will to live" because "fuck them kids", I guess.
(I know there's theories about Sidious siphoning her life force or what the fuck ever, but I don't caaaaare, because I hate the idea that Sidious has that kind of reach for no fucking reason and also it's not actually IN the movies! It doesn't count!)
The Nubian handmaidens are a cool concept, but they're all background characters, who barely get named. We don't get to actually see them and Padmé do a lot of on-screen work together. She doesn't get to confide in them regarding her love or her fears. She speaks to her guard captain more onscreen than her handmaidens.
And while we do see female members of the Jedi Order in the films, they're ALSO all background characters, like Jocasta Nu and Aayla Secura and Yaddle. As opposed to more active Jedi characters like Qui-Gon Jinn or Mace Windu. Like, damn, the prequels are the perfect opportunity to introduce and show off even a female Jedi supporting character, and they just did not do that. That sucks. The careless absence of women in this universe sucks. The careless absence of women as significant characters in these films sucks.
Every other piece of additional material for "Star Wars" has to move to patch this. The "Jedi Apprentice" and "Jedi Quest" novels strive to add and name female agemates and mentors. "The Clone Wars" television shows add Ahsoka as a protagonist and Ventress as a villain and a whole bunch of new female characters.
Yes, given that these are prequels, there are some characters who are not really realistically changeable. (Yes, trans people exist, obviously, that would be very cool; not sure that "Star Wars" was going to go for that back in 1999.) Obi-Wan. Anakin. Yoda. The Emperor. Unnamed Sad Mother of Luke and Leia. You need those ones. EVERYTHING ELSE was up for whatever they wanted to do.
So, anyway, I'm currently thinking about characters you could potentially genderbend without affecting the story pretty much at all. Qui-Gon, obviously. Mace Windu, as well. I think fandom would then hate both of these characters even more then, unfortunately, because fandom is what it is. Whatever legitimate criticisms levied at both of these imperfect characters would have increased tenfold, I am certain of it. But we're talking about the prequels's badly executed stories, not fandom's misogyny. (And misogynoir. A black woman as the leader of the Jedi Order when it was destroyed by the Sith? Fandom would have been even more of a fucking nightmare.) It would suck that they both die, but the prequels are a tragedy anyway, so, eh.
Bail's role in the prequels could have potentially been played by Breha Organa instead. Although, I don't know how well the Extended Universe novels had extended Leia's backstory by that point in time, maybe Bail had already been established as the Senator and Breha as Queen, so maybe not. At the very least, you could have had Mon Mothma in there doing his superspy stuff with him or something. Padmé's guard captain could have been a woman.
Both Darth Maul and Count Dooku could have been women. Yes, they're both evil, and yes, they both die, so it's not perfect on the representation front. But it's something, especially if you balance that out with some good characters, and look, I can't coherently complete this thought, I keep getting distracted by the mental image of hot evil Sith ladies. I think a female Count Dooku would have kicked ass, honestly, as much as I enjoy Christopher Lee in the role.
My main goal with this thought exercise is purely upping the number of plot-relevant female characters, pointing out that it wouldn't have been hard to add more women without changing all that much if anyone involved had actually bothered to think about that.
The original trilogy only mentioned "The Clone Wars", so the clone army didn't all need to be copies of Jango Fett. There could have potentially been a half-dozen genetic donors, with the Kaminoans creating different clone soldiers for different purposes. Some of them could have been clones of women. (I hold the unpleasant headcanon that the clone soldiers are all sterile (or functionally sterile, incompatible with unmodified humans) anyway, because the Kaminoans don't want clients to be able to "steal" their work.) And the clones are actually a fairly minor role in the films themselves, admittedly, not given any more development than any of the droids (it's the show that does the work), but again, it's still something more.

Bringing back Maul was just as bad for what Maul's character originally represented and the negative impact it had on Obi-Wan's characterization as bringing back Palpatine was for what Palpatine represented and the resolution his death brought to Anakin's story.
Maul is the beginning of the end, he is CURRENTLY defeatable, but he can still kill a Jedi, he still kills Qui-Gon because he represents what the darkness can become and what we all know that it WILL ultimately become. He is a harbinger of death. Bringing him back takes away ALL OF THAT. He's no longer connected to Palpatine as the first indication of that oncoming darkness and Palpatine's reach, he's just... flitting around sort-of randomly with no actual purpose or meaning to the narrative around him.
And Maul represents the darkness that Obi-Wan PERSONALLY overcomes. That fear of loss, the fear of moving beyond his teacher, of being forced to grow up early and take on a responsibility you aren't sure you're ready to bear, the anger at the unfairness of it all. Obi-Wan faces it all and overcomes it. It's redundant to show that struggle to us again. And again. And again. And again. Unless the character has something that causes him to completely fail and fall to darkness, I don't need to see him overcome it twice within the same narrative. I already know this about the character. Yes, realistically, people have to keep overcoming the flaw and sometimes they struggle with it more than others, but this is a narrative, it's a fable, I only NEED to be told this character trait once to understand that it's still true.
It also removes a lot of the earned confidence Obi-Wan has later on. Obi-Wan is a Sith Killer, the ONLY Sith Killer in the Order for 13 years and the first in 1000 years. When Obi-Wan faces Dooku with a certain level of confidence, we're supposed to remember that Obi-Wan has earned that confidence in himself. When he goes up against Anakin in the finale, we're supposed to remember that he's killed a Sith before. We're supposed to remember that he's ALREADY OVERCOME HIS OWN FEAR OF LOSS, he already learned that lesson, and that is what will grant him a victory against Anakin in this moment. Instead, Obi-Wan ends up looking like a joke because that Sith he thought he killed just keeps coming back like a bad penny. Why should anyone in-universe or out of it believe Obi-Wan has even a chance against Anakin or Dooku when we know that the Sith he thought he killed is still alive out there?
Bringing back Palpatine is pretty uniformly recognized as a stupid, lazy decision on the part of the filmmakers for the sequel trilogy. No one wanted him back and it truly adds nothing to the story for him to still be alive. What it DOES do is fuck up the entire resolution of Anakin's storyline. Palpatine represents Anakin's demons, his temptations, his weakness and selfishness. When he kills Palpatine, he's not just killing a villain, he's literally supposed to be overcoming that selfishness, rejecting the temptation to do the easy thing, just for a moment. Bringing Palpatine back means that those demons weren't really vanquished, the entire point of overcoming them visually is now gone. The symbolism is lost by saying he wasn't actually dead and he's still around. Palpatine can't just stop representing those things in order to be in the sequel trilogy, that's not how it works.
And it's the same for Maul. Neither character should've been revived because what their deaths represent for the characters who kill them is too important to the narrative's themes to undo out of pure laziness.

Oooh. About your parasitic extraction au? How do force sensitives live in the Mandalorian empire? Like you said conscripted, do they have a bastardization of Jedi culture? Are they enslaved? What is it like? Do canon characters live in the empire or in the Jedi Order in hiding? (I'm thinking Mace Windu, Depa Billiba, Plo Koon, and Ahsoka Tano mainly.) Also! Do other clones exist? Mainly the CCs. Wolffe, Fox and Bly lol
the mandalorian empire love having force sensitive warriors because they're extra strong and have superhuman reflexes so they do everything they can to get their hands on as many of them as they can
general practice is for young force sensitives to be 'adopted' by high-ranking mandalorian clans for training. if they're born into a less prominent mandalorian clan, maybe they can train their kid themself or they can surrender the kid. if the family is not a mandalorian family (e.g., one of the occupied worlds) they're supposed to surrender their force-sensitive child for training and this is considered an honorable thing to do. if they don't want to do that and try to get their child to the jedi order instead to save them from being conscripted for basically the rest of their life then usually their whole family gets killed and the child gets sent to a mandalorian clan as above (this happened to ahsoka and she hates the rebellion because she blames them for her family's death)
mandalorian jedi all wear collars which cannot be removed, and the collar denotes their rank. each mandalorian jedi is also assigned to a handler who is supposed to act as support and also is supposed to kill their jedi if they go off the rails (drink too much dark juice from all the murder and start killing everyone). a mandalorian's jedi armor specifically has an undefended back for this purpose. they're not *technically* enslaved because this is considered an honorable position and they get a lot of privileges but like. read between the lines here.
mandalorian jedi are basically all trained in combat and not so much in the psychic philosophical spiritual stuff because the mandalorians think that 'don't kill people' thing is for chumps and they burned down most of the jedi temple's libraries. they just don't know how to do the psychic stuff and most of the psychic stuff doesn't work very well when you don't teach them emotional regulation first. like a trial for all mandalorian jedi is that they get their kyber crystal and they're not promoted until they've killed enough people that it turns red. if that puts things into perspective.
anyways, the old jedi order is in hiding across the galaxy. they wear normal clothes and they got rid of the padawan braid because they don't want to be murdered on sight. instead of the braid, they use a set of prayer beads, which they carve and add beads to as they go through trials and visit different worlds, partially because prayer beads are really easy to dispose of in a hurry. they do have a base in dagobah though where they take care of and teach the youngest force sensitives.
re: who's who, there are a lot of canon characters on both sides. obi-wan, obviously, is one of the traditional jedi. he was mace's padawan when he got captured by jango. depa, plo koon, jocasta, yoda, and maul are all traditional jedi. obviously there are more, but those are the ones who get mentioned by name.
on the mandalorian side, we have ahsoka (whose handler is padme), anakin (whose handler was rex), qui-gon (who is dead), ventress (whose handler is isabet reau), dooku (whose handler is myles), quinlan (who is a spy trying to infiltrate the jedi order), also aayla and vokara che who kind of just briefly show up
the other clones mostly don't exist. I say mostly because when jango put in a clone order for two sons, kamino made three in case one of them didn't make it, but all three of them did make it and the third one is fox, who the kaminoans then put into the brainwashing factory to turn him into a brainwashed super soldier. and then when jango went back and asked for a new son because cody and rex disappointed him, they made three again and two made it. one of them is boba, and the other one I have named kiki. he is also put into the brainwashing factory.
which is all to say. being a jedi is rough as hell regardless of what side you're on.
ask me a question about parasitic extraction, the role reversal mandalorian empire au that I have

A few months ago I woke up (I wasn't sleeping) in cold sweat at night from a story idea and grabbed a paper I found and wrote on it the OC name that came to me in a vision but only now I started thinking about her more and finally fucking designed her so here's my Jedi Master OC and her three Padawans (and everything I have to say about them) if you want to see them
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(mouth on the first one came out weird, ignore that) Bliz Karse she/her (Karse pronounced Kuh-rs, not sure about Bliz yet) -Ky Narec's best friend! her main story point lmao. They were partners most of their life, from the crèche to knighthood up until Ky ended up on Rattatak. -Theelin -Qui-Gon's and Ky's age - born circa 80 BBY -Lives up to TCW, probably dies in Order 66 (haven't gotten there yet) -Ky and her are really close friends and like half the temple's padawans gossip about them dating. They aren't together. -Her master is Burryaga from The High Republic! Was thinking about a Master for her and he just fit idk -She's short -Ky and her go around the galaxy as Jedi explorers. They're both aspiring Wayseekers, striving to be independent from the council and help wherever they can (this gets serious for Bliz after Ky crashed on Rattatak) -She takes her padawans everywhere so a lot of times people think they're Ky and hers' children -um idk I think she's aroace?
Tumblr media
Padawan I - Sevo Zash They/them -Mirialan (purple!) -I drew them as a Padawan but they're like, older than Obi-Wan. -Bliz took them on not long after her knighting -They love Ky -I need to develop them more (gave them a name like an hour ago and came up with the design this afternoon, I don't know them yet) -Survives Order 66 but is killed by an inquisitor not long after
Tumblr media
Padawan II - Nyyra Xor She/her -Falleen (green, naturally) -NOT AURRA but love me some almost bald characters with a pnytail at the top of their head and no eyebrows -I should make a timeline for Bliz but she's like, in her late 20s/early 30s by the Clone Wars -She thinks Ky is annoying but was still Bliz's Padawan when he crushed on Rattatak (that adds up, right?) so she came to miss him after a while -a big fan of annoying the fuck out of Bliz. She also doesn't like traveling as much as the others so she ended up with the worst possible master in that regard -Sevo sees her as their little sister, I feel like all 3 Padawans are kinda siblings in that way -Oldest sibling energy, doomed to be a middle child -Wants to be on the council. Dies in Order 66.
Tumblr media
Padawan III - Arck Kyvett she/him -Tholothian (no idea how to draw their head-tendrils but I think I did a decent job) -DIES (killed by Asajj) - her main story point is dying. That's where I started, with Asajj being sent to kill Ky's childhood friend's padawan by Dooku and then Bliz came to me -Bliz took him on 2-3 years before the Clone Wars, and he died very quickly (Asajj's first Jedi kill, maybe even before the Clone Wars started) -I wanted to give all of them some sort of Padawan braid, so Arck gets beads on one of his tendrils, I think that can work -Youngest sibling energy, if she didn't die she'd also become the favorite child (Nyyra and Sevo love her dw) -The Ky in her name is the first thing Asajj hears when Bliz refers to her. Wanted to call her Ky originally but felt this would do instead
Woooo building OC lore is fun I should do it more Talked a lot about Ky but never drew him once in my life. Let's ignore that.

Saved: Qui-gon jinn x reader
Tumblr media
Warnings: torture, near death experience, sadness, swearing.
gif creds: @padawanlost
Absoloutely in love with Qui-Gon!! Been thinking about this idea for ageees and finally decided to write it. Not sure if this will do well but to those who read this, I hope ya'll enjoy.
Also sorry if I messed up somewhere
This is so long but I love it regardless :)
--------
The darkness of the chamber messes with your senses. You can't place where you are, at all.
"Hello?"
and your voice echoes through the room. No one replies, shit. with no way of escaping you're forced to wait force knows how long.
You'd been separated from Qui-Gon Jinn, your master. He'd told you go the other way to deal with some enemies. Things went south quick however and with everyone being busy no one noticed you get knocked out and taken.
Chain's restrict movement, all you can do is move your head. The lightsaber that was placed upon your hilt had been taken and with no way to use your powers, it's useless.
"Why me?"
Anyone else could have been taken, but it had to be you. Everyone is always after you but why? what makes you so special? What worries you is how your master is worried for you- you can sense him through the force. You would be the same if your padawan had gone missing.
"Hello?!-"
"I can hear you..."
Grievous
You'd recognise that seperatists voice anywhere. Though this is the first time you've ever come face to face. surprising, really.
"It's you..."
He comes into view. Oh how you want to...
"Padawan (l/n)."
Grievous laughs. He's excited to have finally captured you. He's been trying to capture you for a while. see what did I say about you being that special.
"...finally..."
"Yeah..." you scoff. "...don't get too excited, i'll be out of here before you can do anything..." a lie, of course. You still have no idea when you'll escape or be rescued. Best you can do is wait this 'prison sentence' out for as long as you can.
It's now that you notice your lightsaber. It's hidden pretty well but you catch a glimpse of it which only fuels the anger you have. It's right there but you are unable to reach it...
"You don't think that.."
"Yes I do Grievous. This kidnapping was useless because I'll be gone soon...hmm, shall I say an hour or?"
Grievious simply laughs when you say that, which is followed by a cough. He continues to laugh..
"That's perfect..."
"How?"
He has always wanted to torture you. Wanted to watch as you screamed- beg for mercy- and with this 'hour' you say you have, he'll be able to do so.
"...because I'll be able to torture you..."
He expects you to be scared. Everyone else he's tortured has been scared. You are not though, which kinda makes things a bit ‘boring’ for him.
You smirk, giving him a look of 'I can take it' and he can feel that you're not scared.
"Impressive."
Grievous turns and leaves the room for a second. This gives you a chance to ready your self. You clear your mind, bringing yourself to become one with the force. Fear is not something you feel, but worry; all you worry about is being found dead. You would never want to find someone like that, or be found like that. It wouldn't be fair.
The door reopens not even a minute later. Grievous is holding something- a tool used for torture. He walks back over to you, one of his four arms gripping on the tool.
You stare at him waiting and Grievous laughs, again.
"You're really not that scared..."
Rolling your eyes you scoff at him.
"I told you already i'm- AH!"
The pain you feel is the most excruciating pain you have felt before. The electricity only seems to add that extra bit of pain.
"This is going to be fun..."
he barely gives you enough time to register the next jolt.
-
Minutes soon turn into hours and there seems to be no sign of help. You endure the pain but with every jolt you feel yourself slipping from reality. You are no longer one with the force, as hard as you try to be.
"Again..."
Grievous orders his new 'helper' to administer another jolt of pain. You drop your head, finding yourself focusing on a spot on the floor. You need to focus on something else- you need to get your mind off what's happening because if you don't, you'll break.
Another jolt of pain follows. Closing your eyes you shift focus from what's happening, and instead you focus on something else. Anything else, this is your last option...that's when something comes to mind. A memory, to be exact.
It's a beautiful day out. Rather than train, your master had said you would just be going on a relaxing walk through a garden. It will help to get your mind off stuff and meditate outside rather than inside. You have your hands clasped together behind your back, while Qui-Gon has his hands tucked into the sleeves of his robe.
You don't speak, you just think. No idea what Master Jinn is talking about but you're thinking about something- though you won't ask him what you're thinking, he may find it weird.
"Padawan..."
He doesn't look over at you, he keeps his focus ahead.
"...are you okay?"
Okay so he can tell something is up. Though you're not sure how..
"..what do you mean, master?"
"I can feel you through the force. Something is bothering you?"
that's how he knows
"Oh, uh, i'm sorry I wasn't aware..." bringing your hands around to your side, you unsclasp them.
"You don't have to apologise (y/n)..."
Qui-Gon looks over at you this time.
"...what's on your mind?"
Embarrased you scratch the back of your neck, now looking at him.
"...Master...I want to ask a question, but I'm afraid it's...stupid..."
You're caught off guard when he places a hand on your shoulder, which makes you stop.
"I assure you, your question won't be stupid."
It's nice to know how much he cares. Rather than be a master who holds no care for their padawan.
You nod, smiling up at your master. Then you ask;
"What if I were ever in a situation where I was in a lot of pain, like if I was badly hurt or being tortured, how would I distract myself?”
Qui-gon smiles at your question. You’re very smart, something he’s always admired about you.
“Firstly your question isn’t stupid. It’s quite smart, and to answer your question..”
he makes a motion so you start walking again.
“Focus on a happy memory, any happy memory. When you’re able to focus on the memory you’ll be able to distract yourself enough.”
Makes sense
“…thank you for asking, padawan.”
You fall into an even walking pattern as your master.
“Thank you for answering.”
He can’t help but smile. Bringing his hands back into his sleeves he replies with "you're welcome my padawan" before falling back into a comfortable silence.
-
That's what you focus on. You focus on that memory- one of your happiest memories. The torture drowns out until all you are focused on is that memory.
-
It's all blurry when Qui-Gon and his other padawan, obi-wan, arrive. You don't fully realise what's happening; you've focused back in one your surroundings but because of the torture you can't fully focus.
"Master!"
it's hard to place who's speaking. Though you can tell it's not Grievous or any of his men.
You attempt to raise your head but you're so weak it ends up dropping again.
Ugh..
"(y/n)!"
There's the sound of running and then the feel of someone messing around with the restraints around your wrists and ankles.
"It's okay, i'm- we're here, now...."
Qui-Gon?
Lifting your head again you're able to see a glimpse of your master.
"Master...?"
"It's me. I'm going to get you out of here..."
A smile forms on your lips.
"I knew you w-would come for me..."
When you're set free of the restraints you fall into Qui-gon's arms. He wraps his arms around you so he’s carrying you. You lean your head against his chest, quiet groans falling from your lips.
"It's okay...it's okay.."
Looking at Obi-Wan, he immediately leaves this torture chamber. His eyes don't leave you, however, and he has to hold back from tearing up. He blames himself for this happening. If he hadn't told you to go the other way then you wouldn't have been seperated and he would have been able to keep you safe.
Sometime through the escape you end up falling unconcious.
----
It's days before you wake up. Both Qui-Gon + Obi-Wan are there for you, most. It's Qui-Gon, though, who stays by your side the most. The council, surprisingly, lets him off training Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan doesn't complain. He worries about you mostly.
When you wake you see Qui-Gon asleep. Though he wakes when he senses you're awake.
"Master...?"
It hurts when you move, so you stay laying down. Quig sighs in relief;
"(y/n)..."
He doesn't call you 'padawan', he only wants to call you by your name at the moment.
"...how long was I out for?"
"Too...too long."
Qui-Gon could still feel you through the force which was relieving to know you were still hanging on. He'd wished you had woken up sooner, though.
"...(y/n)..." Qui-Gon begins, one of his hands moving to rest on the bed. He hesitates with his next words not wanting to bring back those memories but he has to say something.
He feels responsible for what happened to you. You're his padawan, his actions are what caused you to get caught in the first place. The moment you had disappeared, he'd sensed it..
"(y/n)?"
swinging his lightsaber to the side Qui-Gon cuts down one of the enemies. No sign of you, however. You were close by when you'd last spoken...
"(y/n)?"
Qui-Gon turns on his heel and scouts out the area. He can't find you though but he can feel you through the force...and something is wrong.
"(y/n)-“
"Master!"
Out of breath Obi-Wan runs over to Qui-Gon. He had been with with you, last, but you're not there with him.
"Obi-wan. Are you okay?"
"Yes, but I'm not sure where (y/n) is. I...we got separated, master."
Obi-wan feels guilt for losing you, he hopes that nothing bad has happened to you.
"Are you okay?”
“Yes, but I’m more worried about (y/n).”
“I’m glad you’re okay, obi-wan.” Obi-wan nods
“Thank you.”
“And thank you for coming to me."
Obi-wan once again nods, thanking Qui again.
Qui-Gon then makes a motion for Obi-Wan to follow him so the two leave to continue the search for you.
--
"I''m sorry, for what happened..."
"Mast-Qui-gon it's...it's okay."
Recounting the event is hard because you can barely remember the torture. It's like your mind has fragmented the memories, you can only remember bits and pieces. Maybe it's a coping mechanism your brain has switched on to help you cope from such a tramatic experience.
"I can't...it's hard to remember what happened. All I really remember is the start of the torture...but that's it..."
If it hadn't been for what Qui-gon had told you, however, you would have given up. You'd been able to lock onto that memory because of what he’d told you
"...actually, I have to thank you, and not just for getting me out of there but also for being the reason I didn't break..."
Qui-gon tilts his head a moment.
"What do you mean?"
"Well..." you begin. "...that day when we were walking in the park, when I asked you what to do if I ever got into a situation like the one I got into, and you told me to think of a memory that makes me happy. Well that was the memory I chose."
A smile tugs at your lips.
"...so yeah you're the reason I didn't give up..."
You have admired Qui-gon for as long as he's been your master. He is the wisest yet kindest person you've ever had the chance of meeting; he may go against the council's orders a lot of the time [which you usually agree with him about] but it's usually for a good reason.
He just cares deeply for people, one of the things you like about him. You would be lying if you said you hadn't grown fond of him, more tha you would view him as just a friend.
That was one of his favourite memories too. He remembers being impressed with your question so much so that he thought about it long after. That day was perfect- no missions or having to deal with anything bad. To hear how it helped you, though, means a lot- it takes some of the guilt off, that's for sure.
"I'm...i'm happy about that, (y/n) but I should really be apologising.."
"Apologising?"
"Yes..." Running a hand through his hair Qui-Gon sighs. "I was the reason you got taken. i told you to go the other way...I should have kept you with me..."
He blames himself? he shouldn't. He simply told you to go and deal with a few of the enemies, he never knew your kidnapping + soon to follow torture would even happen. Without even meaning for it to happen you reach a hand out, putting it on top of one of his.
"...what happened wasn't your fault."
He shakes his head in disagreement.
"I'm your master. I'm supposed to protect you..."
"and i'm supposed to listen to what you tell me to do..." you reply. "...and you told me to go and deal with those people. I listened because i'm the padawan and you're the master, and a great one at that."
You never lie, Qui-Gon knows that, but the guilt still eats away at him. You can tell so you squeeze his hand softly..
"I know you don't believe me, and I can't convince you to, but just know that I know it's not your fault.."
You linger with your touch for a moment more, hand moving away soon. You lean your head back against the pillow, watching Qui-gon, who doesn't really have the words.
He just looks at you sympathetically before standing up; there's no point in dwelling in his guilt, so he decides to distract himself. He stands up from his chair to leave...
"I'll let Obi-Wan know you're awake.."
You know he'll be happy.
"Thank you, Qui..."
the jedi smiles softly, and nods.
"You're welcome..."
and then he walks off; before he leaves, however, he glances back over to you. You're looking away so you don't see him staring. A sigh falls from his lips, his eyes closing slightly. He wishes it was him that went through that torture, not you, because you didn't deserve it.
To see you like this breaks his heart more than he can even describe. Pushing the thoughts of his mind for the moment he pushes off the doorframe and leaves.

Why do the stars never align
Anakin/Female Obi-Wan, Soulmark AU
Summary: Where Anakin and Padme are soulmates, tied by the red-string of fate and matching marks. But it is Obi-Wan who has Darth Vader’s name on her wrist.
Main Events/Notes
Obi-Wan's soulmark essentially haunted her for most of her early stay in the Jedi Temple. The whole reason she nearly got sent to Agricorps is because the Jedi Council thought this meant she would fall. This was put to a stop by Qui-Gon who intervened by saying he would take on Obi-Wan as an apprentice and keep her from going dark side.
"You assume this mark means she'll fall, but what if it's the opposite? What if this means she's meant to bring one of theirs back to the light?"
Obi-Wan is pretty much treated like a ticking time bomb. The rumors follow her less after her Qui-Gon takes her as a padawan. But the rumors resurge after he dies and Obi-Wan 'defeats' Darth Maul. A young Anakin faces the brunt of it.
"If you don't feel comfortable having me as your master, I can always petition for someone else to take over your training." "I don't care who your fated is. I'll always stay by your side. Your my master and I'm your padawan."
When Count Dooku is discovered to be the Sith apprentice, the council nearly sends Obi-Wan away.
"Was this all a ploy by your old padawan, Master Yoda? To use his own padawan, your grand-padawan, might I add, to claim the young Obi-Wan?"
"I know you want to argue against the council. But we must trust in the Force, Anakin." "Trust the Force? It's because of the Force that they're locking you away in the first place! You didn't do anything wrong, Master! You never asked to be bonded to the damn Sith!"
Anakin goes after Count Dooku, all the more enraged now that Obi-Wan was being held as a prisoner. At the Count's death and finding of evidence that Dooku had no ulterior motive with Obi-Wan, the council lets Obi-Wan go.
Cue other events. Anakin gets more disillusioned with the council and how they treat both him and Obi-Wan. But he attempts to stay strong for Obi-Wan's sake.
As Anakin grows up, he becomes concerned with his dreams. He sees Padme dying and he hears Obi-Wan screaming in pain at the hands of her fated. Cue self-fulfilling prophecy vibes where every bad dream Anakin tries to prevent essentially comes to fruition. So desperate to save his wife and his master from her Sith fated, Anakin falls to the Dark Side.
Obi-Wan battles Anakin. In the middle of their battle, Padme dies giving birth to the twins and Obi-Wan gets severely injured. Obi-Wan runs away from everything, realizing that the same Sith she had been avoiding her whole life was the man her padawan ended up being.
Possibly maybe cue a Obi-Wan on-the-run continuation as she tries to escape Darth Vader.
Notes: Just an idea so far with nothing yet on the sequel. This was just an outline of what I saw happening for the prequel timeline.

For the ask game!
★ - back then I was dauntless
✿ - how to bring him home
♫ - and bit by bit
Ask Game
HELLO FRIEND LET'S GO-
★ what was the scene you most wanted to write in back then, i was dauntless? what was the hardest scene to write?
Oh, gosh, the scene I most wanted to write would have to be the discovery of the chips and the beginning of the removal process. That was the seed from which the rest of the fix-it sprouted, and this may sound silly, but I felt genuinely relieved when I finally finished polishing off that scene. I'd fixed it. I was about to put a whole lot of characters through a whole lot of grief, but at least they'd all live.
As for the hardest scene to write?
Honestly, I... don't think there was one? While it did take me a while to decide on exactly how I wanted Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's reunion to play out, I genuinely don't remember there ever being a moment when I was really struggling with writer's block. This fic kind of popped into my head fully formed, and as far as I can remember, I just went with it.
✿ did anything major change when you started writing how to bring him home to when you finished?
...Yes, although I don't necessarily want to spoil anything. The way I wrote the dynamic between two particular characters shifted as the fic got into its later chapters, thanks to certain people who know exactly who they are. The payoff of that will start to become apparent- hopefully already has, at least slightly- in like lightning changing hands.
♫ send a fic and i’ll make a 3-5 song playlist for you
DANGEROUS. DANGEROUS DANGEROUS DANGEROUS REQUEST AND I LOVE YOU FOR IT. 3-5 SONGS ARE FOR COWARDS.
...Anyway. I may have gone a little bit overboard. But I'll limit the list I put here to three songs!
Watergun, by Remo Forrer- this song was actually suggested by a commenter, and I loved it.
Family, by Mother Mother- I couldn't help myself.
Second Child, Restless Child, by The Oh Hellos- Needle, my beloved.
The link to the full playlist on Spotify is here- AND! If you use this link, you should be able to add songs yourself! I absolutely adore it when people mention songs that they thought fit well with a certain chapter/fic/character in a comment, it's one of my favorite things- so please feel free to add a song or several if there's one you think fits!

Basically I don't like it when;
- Hardcore Obi fans don't give the rest of the SW a much of a glance
- People downgrading Anakin and other important characters
- Pamde hardcore fans think she plays the most important character in the films (she is but not to the point of overshadowing the others and making fun of people who like said other characters especially to the main character of the chosen one)
- People not wanting or refusing to understand the Jedi ways and make some sh*t about them that aren't true
- Being a fan of the sith and mocking the Jedi ways (I like both so when I see one side or the other doing the same it's like why)
-Obi fans and other fans not understanding Qui Gon's complex characteristics
- Thinking one's couple is all superior to others
- People can have such naive thoughts about how the prophets are
- Hardcore Anidala makes it so that they're the only one in the whole saga it's about them (I love Anidala I do but I know for a fact the universe is only half theirs while the other half is their childrens and their colleges)
- People excluding one twin over the other
-People think they know Lucas right to the bone when they don't
-People think one should take one's insight and say it's canon of other series and or comics when in fact the six movies are canon alone
& - People thinking they can try and call out people thinking they're right and wrong
Add on more later

Searching for a Star Wars Fic(?) Help?
There's a question mark there because it's not really a fic, more like a prompt idea, but there is some written stuff there like how a fic would show.
I found this on Tumblr, these are basically stories people reblog and add in their own extensions of the story.
So Anakin time traveled to the past, he tried to tell Qui Gon how great little! Obi-wan could be a padawan. Annoyed by Anakin Qui-gon replies "Then why don't you take him yourself? Ha!" and Anakin was like "Oh sh*t I did smth wrong". So because Anakin accidentally rewrote the future, he decided to take little! Obi-wan as his padawan. It. Was. PURE. Chaos. The council dreaded the pair because of how chaotic and destructive and unpredictable they could be. And in the end, Qui-gon would help Anakin because he noticed how much he was "NOT" a good master who reigned in his padawan. Qui-gon didn't want a padawan, in the end, he gained two. After this happened Older! Obi-wan had also time traveled and he was like "Anakin what did you do!?". The council was expecting someone rowdier than Little! Obi-wan and were shocked when they got calm and collected, and polite! Jedi instead. Ofc they weren't going to complain, it was a miracle that he could reign in Anakin and Little! Obi-wan. Little did they know, Obi-wan was actually worse than Little! Obi-wan, he was just a lot more discrete. Qui-gon was falling in love with Older! Obi-wan, but keeps getting cock-blocked because of Anakin (he found out what Qui-gon did to his obi-wan and was NOT happy). You can see how scared the council was when they saw the twinkle of admiration and the determination to learn that they saw from Little! Obi-wan for Older! Obi-wan.
That'a basically the whole story. I thought I had liked it but apparently not. or maybe I just can't find it in my likes.

Duel of the Fates part 1
Tumblr media
N/A: Okay, I will only narrate the fight from Astra's, Obi-Wan's, and Anakin's perspectives, okay? Jar Jar's perspective will not be included.
The three entered the room and positioned themselves behind Anakin, except for Astra, who stood by his side due to being the shortest.
—The Force is strong in him—declared one of the masters, causing Astra to smile at the boy.
—Will he be trained?—asked Qui-Gon.
—He won't be trained—declared Windu—. He's too old—assured.
—Even if you add up the age of everyone here, Master Yoda is still the oldest—whispered the girl, eliciting a laugh from the boy.
—He is the chosen one; you must feel it. Just like Astra, there can't be one without the other.
—Hmm, uncertain future, the boy has, and with her, I can't see it—mused Yoda.
—I will train him. Anakin will be my Padawan from now on.
—An apprentice already has, Qui-Gon. Impossible to have a second if the girl depends on you.
—The code forbids it.
—Another master could train me. Master Dooku, who trained Master Qui-Gon, has no Padawan under his care.
—I am ready for initiation—Obi-Wan hurried to say.
—The council will decide when someone is ready.
—He's stubborn and has much to learn from the Force, but he's capable. He won't learn anything more from me.
—Skywalker's destiny will be decided later.
—This is not the right time. The Senate will choose another chancellor, and Queen Amidala will return home, putting pressure on the Federation and possibly escalating the confrontation.
—It would make the attacker of the queen reveal himself.
—Go to Naboo with the queen and discover the identity of this dark warrior. That's what we need to solve the mystery of the Sith.
—You must be joking; she can't go—yelled the youngest.
—Young Starling—you were called.
—Jedi shouldn't even get involved in government affairs. If it will be—she knelt in front of the council and pleaded—Please, I implore you, send someone else.
—The decision has already been made. Either accept it and accompany them or stay in the temple waiting for their return—Windu pronounced as Qui-Gon carried her.
—May the Force be with you.
With this, the four left, and the masters looked at each other.
—Her attachment to him is too great—commented Master Mundi.
—She is still young, has much to learn—Yoda reminded.
—Respect for elders is one of those things—Windu mocked.
—You see disrespect; I see a frightened girl who wants to save her father—said Master Yaddle.
—She acts as if she were going to die—pointed out Master Shak Ti.
—Perhaps not to that extent, but none can deny that Astra has shown the ability to perceive certain things unconsciously—Yaddle recalled—. Perhaps we were wrong not to listen to her.
Meanwhile, the group reached the hangar, where Naboo's entourage awaited them to go to the planet and resolve what was happening.
—Do you think they will train me?
—Sure they will, and if they say no, Qui-Gon will do it. He promised.
—But no one will train you.
—I am already part of the order; they won't leave me without training. In the worst case, I know someone who would teach me without hesitation. Alone, I don't think it's a good idea to go on this mission.
—Everything will be fine.
—How do you know?
—Because the best Jedi in the galaxy accompanies me.
—Astra, please get on the ship.
—Yes, Qui-Gon—she nodded, getting on her speeder and entering the ship.
Once underway, Anakin was left in the care of the pilot while the Jedi, the captain, the queen, and her handmaidens were in another room talking.
—Upon landing, the Federation will arrest her and force her to sign the treaty.
—I agree. I don't know what she hopes to achieve with this—Qui-Gon emphasized.
—Reclaim what is ours.
—More like putting a blaster to everyone's head. Should we wait for them to pull the trigger and find out which one is loaded? This is suicide—said the girl, twirling her lightsaber in her palm and stopping it repeatedly.
—The girl is right; we don't have an army, and there are not enough men.
—I can only protect her, not fight a war for you.
—You wouldn't even have to protect her if she had stayed still in Coruscant as she was asked to—she complained, restraining the urge to punch her.
—Jar Jar Binks—the monarch called.
—Misa, Your Highness?
—Yes, you have to help me.
The queen explained her plan, and somehow Astra had hope that they could get help from the Gungans, who, according to Jar Jar, were a warrior people with a good strategy despite their strange way of speaking. When they landed, Jar Jar went to talk to his people, Obi-Wan went with Qui-Gon, and Astra stayed with Anakin and Padmé.
—Do you think the plan will work?—the boy asked.
—I couldn't tell you. I have a pretty clear idea of how stubborn this supposed queen is. But as for the king, I can't say if he hates everyone on the surface or just dislikes Jar Jar.
—You're still on the same thing—Padmé sighed resignedly.
—I'll keep on it until you open your mouth to tell the truth—she declared, walking toward her father—. Take care of him, Padmé; he still doesn't know how to fight.
—Sometimes I don't know if he loves me or sees me as a helpless animal—the boy asserted with some regret.
—Jar Jar is taking too long—pointed out the padawan.
—Do you think he abandoned us?—the girl questioned.
—No, you saw how they treated him last time. I doubt he'll stay in a place like this.
—Even if it's the place where he was born?
—Even if it is. Here he comes.
Jar Jar emerged from the water, shook himself off before reaching them with not very pleasant news.
—No one there, the city is deserted. Maybe a fight, perhaps.
—Have they taken them to the fields?
—I think they eliminated them—suggested the captain.
—Misa, don't cry.
—They live in the water—reminded the girl—. The droids would take a while to find them. Maybe they managed to escape.
—Do you know where they are, Jar Jar?
—In these cases, the Gungan sanctuaries are always. Misa will take you; let's go. Misa will take you.
Everyone began to walk through the forest towards the sanctuary. Jar Jar led the way, followed by the supposed queen. Then came the four Force users along with the captain, the queen's handmaidens, and some soldiers. There weren't many, to be honest, but there were enough to attract the attention of the Gungans when they arrived at the sanctuary.
Jar Jar spoke with one of the guards whom he apparently knew, and he led them in front of the king, announcing only the queen.
—Your Excellency, Queen Amidala of Naboo.
—Hello, Great Chief, Your Excellency.
—Jar Jar Binks. Tell me, who are the others?—he asked, annoyed.
—I am Queen Amidala of Naboo; I have come in peace—the "queen" spoke.
—Ah, an important Naboo. You bring the chattedroids; you are very naughty.
—I've looked for them because I want to form an alliance.
—Your Excellency—Padmé spoke, stepping in front of the supposed queen, causing a smile in the youngest present.
—Who is she?
—I am Queen Amidala, she is my decoy. My bodyguard, my loyal protector. I apologize for deceiving you, but it was necessary to protect myself. Although we may not always agree, Your Excellency, our two societies have always been at peace. Now, the Federation is destroying what it cost us so much to build. If we do not act, we will lose everything, forever you must support us—she knelt before the king— I beg you to support us. We are your humble servants.
With these words, everyone in the entourage knelt to demonstrate the honesty in the words of the young queen, much to Astra's annoyance, who had to get off her speeder to do so. The king thought for a moment, leaving the attendees expectant, and out of nowhere, to their dismay, he burst into laughter as if he had heard the best joke.
—You guys don't think you're better than us Gungans— he exclaimed while still laughing—. I love hearing that. Being friends would be fabulous— he shook his head in a strange way, amusing the Force users and confusing the others.
The Gungans planned their strategy with the members of the guard who knew the terrain better. Obi-Wan spoke with Qui-Gon, and Astra tried to see what would happen with the battle, although it was almost impossible for her to notice anything. In her mind, there was torment; she saw the destroyed temple, saw a woman crying in the arms of another, and then nothing. No matter what the Force showed her, she saw nothing that gave her peace, nothing that indicated that everything would be fine. At some point, it became evident since she was floating almost half a meter off the ground, and the grass around her sometimes seemed to wither and quickly grow back. She felt a liquid run down her nose before falling to the ground when someone touched her shoulder.
—Are you okay?—Padmé asked, handing her a handkerchief.
—I would be better if you hadn't distracted me—she reproached, cleaning the blood without any care.
—What are you trying to do?
—Find out if your suicidal plan will end up killing us all.
—I'm pretty sure everything will be fine—Padmé reassured her.
—What if it's not? The Force is capable of many things, but there is still no way to bring back life without taking another in return.
—Astra, Anakin, come here—Qui-Gon called.
Qui-Gon asked Anakin to watch and come to warn when the Gungans were on their way, and Astra asked to stay with Padmé temporarily.
—They're here already—Anakin announced when he arrived.
—They did it.
—You did well, Jar Jar Binks, you have united us with the Naboo—congratulated the king—. So, I will appoint you Bomboso general.
—General—exclaimed the Gungan before fainting.
—What is the situation?
—Almost everyone is in camps; some police and guards formed an underground resistance. I brought as many leaders as I could. The Federation's army is larger and stronger than we thought. It's a battle that I doubt we can win.
—Not without the right strategy—acknowledged the girl.
—It's impossible.
—Difficult, not impossible, and we have a small surprise factor.
—At this point, they must have discovered the ship.
—And they know how many of us were on it, and they know the strength of the Naboo army, but they don't know the strength of the Gungans. It's an opportunity we must take advantage of.
—It's true. The battle will be a distraction; the Gungans will make the droids leave the city. R2—the droid projected a hologram with the plans of Naboo—We'll enter the city through the secret passage behind the waterfall. When we reach the main entrance, Captain Panaka will create a distraction. After that, we'll be at the palace and capture the Viceroy. Without the Viceroy, they will be lost and confused. What do you suggest, Jedi Master?
—The Viceroy will have many guards.
—It will be difficult to reach the throne room, but once there, it won't be a problem.
—Although it's a good idea, there is a possibility with this distraction that many Gungans will die.
—We are ready to continue—assured the chief.
—We have a plan that will immobilize the army of droids. I'll send any pilots I have to neutralize the droid control ship.
—It's a clever plan, with a lot of risk; their ship's weapons may not penetrate the shield.
—And there is an even greater danger. If the Viceroy manages to escape, he will return with another army of droids, Your Majesty.
—Intelligence is not your strong suit, right, Obi-Wan—mocked the girl—The third step of the plan is to capture the Viceroy; he said it right after the part where we infiltrate the palace through the secret passages.
—It's the most important, everything depends on it.
The Gungan troops took their positions and began to march toward the battlefield. Meanwhile, the Jedi and several soldiers entered the city in small groups to go unnoticed. They positioned themselves against the wall, and Padmé used a flashlight to signal the captain, who responded indicating that they could pass. Qui-Gon crouched in front of the children and first addressed Anakin.
On the other side of the hangar, Anakin was checking the buttons on his ship, trying to find the trigger to help Astra and Padme with the droids. R2 emitted a complaining beep, and he responded.
"That's what I'm trying to do; I don't know where the trigger is." He pressed a button that made the ship move forward. "Oops, not this one. Maybe it's this." He pulled a lever, and the hatch closed. "Wait, here it is." He took control and maneuvered the ship before pressing the trigger to shoot the droids.
"Let's go," indicated the queen, running into the palace with the soldiers behind her.
"It's on autopilot," he yelled when he saw it was about to take off. "R2, deactivate it." He put on a helmet.
"Padme, was that Anakin?" asked the girl, floating by her side.
"He'll be fine; it's safer than here."
"If you say so."
While the Jedi continued to battle the Sith, the blows went back and forth without rest. They couldn't hit him, but they also didn't give him a chance to attack. Until a moment when the Zabrak jumped while blocking a low blow from Obi-Wan and kicked Qui-Gon in the abdomen, throwing him to the ground. This gave the Sith the opportunity to move away towards one of the hangar doors leading to an auxiliary power plant. There, he used the Force to lift a cut piece of a droid and damage the circuit to allow him to pass. However, he couldn't afford to be distracted, as the Padawan was right behind him and didn't miss the chance to attack him again. The master ran to his aid, and before entering, the Sith hit Obi-Wan in the same way he had done with his master, throwing him far from the entrance, leaving only the master with enough time to step back. The series of bridges and generators supplying power were over a deep pit that, from where they were, seemed to have no bottom. The battle continued in this place, with the Sith retreating to a control panel from where he did a backflip to reach one of the bridges, followed by the Jedi.

Chut Chut PateesaHow are you?
Once again here with you, I want to let you know that all the chapters of this first season will be published before or at the latest by December 31st, that is, before this year's Festival of Lights.
-Astra, run, I think he's finally going to do it. -Obi-Wan, is he going to shave his beard? -What? No, silly, Anakin challenged Jar Jar to a game of Sabacc, and Jar Jar is winning. -Are you kidding? I have to see this.
Well, my beloved Padawans, as always, I ask you to like, comment, follow me, beware of the Sith, and remember that "your focus determines your reality." And May the Force be with you.

So, scene from way far future, dedicated in part to @deadcatwithaflamethrower , who partially inspired this particular section near the end of what's written for OtherWhen pt2 (aka, The Vote).
'
I hummed, sitting cross-legged and meditating in Yoda's quarters, and letting the Force speak to me. I pondered in my empty head how I was going to get the Council to Not Die, or to actually acknowledge the fact that I was a walking impossibility and they needed to get their heads out of the sand and look that impossibility in the face to recognize it is, in fact, not so impossible.
Midichlorians below my actual Force Connection, a toddler with full skill with Force Illusion, enough to look and act like a Jedi Master if I was so Inclined (I wasn't, so I looked like an experienced Knight instead), and the fact that I wanted to slap them upside the head.
If I wanted them to wake up and smell the coffee (preferably before it became ashes), then they needed to wake up to the fact that less than a hundred midichlorians per milliliter does not make you dead or a Force Null (that the world is so much more than they realize).
One of the great things about having been raised on the Rabhitta was the fact that I could use a variant of psychometry to view stories I'd read, like Re-Entry...
I frowned. You know, I hadn't thought about that story in... years, by this point. Why is it important? Or Olga Marie talking about "Proper Human History", a complete crock of-
The One.
I opened my eyes as realization blossomed in the empty air hidden behind the ivory dome.
The One, eventually makes the Three, which eventually makes The One again, much like the self-corrective action of Alya and "Proper Human History"...
"Gravity." I breathe. Prophecy, completing because it is a fact, not self-fulfilling, but because it Will Happen, and might fulfill itself in a way that doesn't result in a happy path. "It's a matter of Gravity."
Acting quickly before I could forget, I wrote down a number of directly related points to lead me back to this realization fast and turned to the tiny green being and said, "Gather the High Council. I need to speak this to them."
Then I ran to grab my art supplies rather than waiting for a response. Force Illusion does a great job, but only if you remember what you want to display.
-`-`-`-`
I grinned at the annoyed and glaring faces of the High Council (and the fact that my 'Curse' to keep them at "Regular People" levels of stiff rather than "Diplomacy within a snake's pit" that I'd once resorted to within the Empire and never wanted to touch again was still in play) and decided to strike while the iron was hot. "So, I'm gonna try and keep this brief and on point, so that I don't forget why we're here in the first place - and to that end I would prefer a complete lack of interruptions, because that might make me forget too.
"So, I've been trying to get you people to pull the sticks out of your asses for a week now, and I'm not willing to go a Sith route and use either Domination or intimidating you into agreeing with me because I'm being terrifying, so instead, I'll use a thought experiment." I paused to consider that. "Okay, bad metaphor, but hey, metaphors are interesting things. Anyway, my view of the Multiverse is as simple as it is complex: there are as many universes, alternate or parallel timelines, as there are stars in the sky - and some of those are similar enough to forms of fiction as to be all but impossible to separate, such as the story of the Phantom Menace, where the Trade Federation blockade Naboo, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his student Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent in for negotiations, and a Sith tries to gut them both. Apprentice, I should add that in." Throughout, I'd been using Illusions to better demonstrate my point - stars of light which were actually tiny corded braids if one looked close enough to show the many timelines, a small line pointing at several such points to help group them as similar, and a few changing color to demonstrate their difference, and a ghostly image of the poster for the Phantom Menace when I brought it up.
"Or perhaps, instead, I should start with a more historical account, given that the Phantom Menace hasn't happened within this timeline yet, but the Knights of the Old Republic, the story of Jedi Master Revan and his wife Bastilla actually has. About Four Thousand Years ago, we have a Mandalorian-Republic War about Mandalorian conquest, which ends because the Jedi High Council of the era sat on their asses because they saw a greater threat on the horizon and ignored the war on their doorsteps, leading Revan and his buddy Malak to join the military and all but purge the Mando'a - eventually falling and coming back as conquerors."
I sat there for a moment to let them digest that. "In another timeline, where the Force is just an artifact of a series of movies known as Star Wars, we have a video game called Knights of the Old Republic, where a member of the Republic military gets thrown into galactic conflict without so much as a by-your-leave, discovers Jedi Padawan bastilla and Captain Carth Onasi, followed by getting the heck off of the blockaded planet of Taris and finding out he-slash-she is a Jedi-to-be, and despite the misgivings of the Council, none of which are explained at that moment, and the adult is trained by Bastilla Shan in lightsaber combat, ending the journey by killing Darth Malak. But, spoilers, they discover partway through, after getting kidnapped by Malak himself, that the main character is actually Revan, whom was mind-wiped by the Council, which neatly explained their unvoiced disquiet." I'd shown several scenes from the game - and a few from my own memories as Terra - to help give them a narrative, things to put names to as I gave an overly short description of that chaotic period of time.
"In another timeline, this is science fiction." I showed them the cover art for the game's release box.
"Here, it is historical fact."
I wait for them to digest this particular nugget (darnit, I kinda miss my kid now- refocus) and send little calming ripples through the Force to keep them from speaking up. Yes, incomplete explanations of my own personal worldview and how it pertains to this conversation is awkward, but we're racing against my attention span here. "It also, tangentially, relates to another video game called 'Fate/Grand Order, where you're a time traveller trying to keep the human race on a pre-spaceflight planet from getting incinerated by magic - mostly because of a concept they called 'Proper Human Histoy', a ridiculous notion, but worth it to bring up, because when details are forgotten or misremembered or minor bits of time travel get involved, the essence of Time smooths it out, but some changes become persistent. I'll explain why that's relevant in a moment.
"In another timeline, which I will label as The OtherWhen, Obi-Wan Kenobi lived, died, woke up in a parallel timeline just after Taro Tre, lived about four years of time- five, sorry, and then met a collosally powerful and monumentally stupid being whom decided the best thing for Obi-Wan and his Padawan Anakin on their road to healing was to send them back to the timeline their souls were born in - AKA, the OtherWhen - and made a crack in time as a result, as well as a pair of rather spectacular migraines caused by multiple examples of the same quantum signature within the Force existing at the same time. Long story very short, he met up with his apprentice, his grand-padawan, and a few good soldiers they'd made friends with more than twenty years before their respective deaths, and ended up chucked into a Force Vision, showing the future of the timeline they were in." I started showing an image of what I'd imagined it to look like, two temples in two forests - organic and shelled ships above the abandoned temple on Yavin 4, and First Order destroyers above Maz's home on... whatever that planet was called, I don't recall its name at the moment. And a grey-black fog, impossible to penetrate between them, a near-chasm in the ground leading up to it, three Jedi and three clones standing around it.
"That was a simple, three-part thing. On the left, the Yuuzong Vong appeared and tried to devour the galaxy because Jedi or more probably Sith had messed with their existence a thousand years before or more and they were vengeful. That, I'm calling Legends. On the other, right-handed side of possibility, there's Disney, where the Sith Empire rose up again as the First Order, the Jedi was wiped out to just, like, two siblings and a desert rat scavenger, and there was idiocy all around including turning Illum into a planet-shattering kabewm gun. Yes, a planet, turned into a gun. A turbolaser designed to shatter planets from entire star systems away." Illum with its deep trench and massive gun barrel was shown, blasting multiple planets in one scattergun shot. Luke in black garb using currents of the Force to break a number of Vong ships, despite their sheer resistance to the Force as much as conventional weaponry. And Darth Talon's master, parasitic Vong excretions making him look like an evil version of Dovahkiin, side-by-side with Kylo Ren's attempted Sith Master and a black-faced cloak-only version of Palpatine, if only for form's sake, because I'd never seen past The Force Awakens and didn't care to now.
"But that's not important, compared to the third timeline, which they were in. See, the being, Emmaltine, had chucked them into their original timeline without any restrictions or safety measures, which basically cracked a Shatterpoint - not like paradox-broken time, but like cracking pavement where instead of going left or right like usual, now there's space for new growth, an unexpected change. Obi-Wan and Anakin where they should not have been changed the course of history there.
"That, the three Jedi and about three clones, being tossed into a Force Vision then led to a conversation about Quantum Mechanics and Temporal Physics, which pointed out that all three of those timelines were 'The Real Timeline', and that eventually, the three would recombine as multiple, if conflicting, accounts of the same time period, because Time, from our perspective, exists as much as an Imaginary Number. Something that doesn't classically exist until we measure it, unlike a rock or something, but when you start measuring it gets you something - imaginary numbers making certain equations consistent or properly measuring particle physics, time acting similarly to photonic matter where it can be a lot of things until you start to measure it, and similarly brain-hurting concepts. In simpler words for Time, 'Everything happens all at once. It is only linear to us, because that is how we percieve it, cause leading to effect - and when you can see time for what it actually is, it becomes much easier to be lost within it, but also easier to navigate it'.
"And finally, a set of words that don't really make sense unless you apply it to those three timelines, because we're explaining things backwards today. 'The One becomes the Three which becomes the One again'." Here I wiped away all my previous Illusions and showed them Obi-Wan's explanation of time within the OtherWhen timeline. A long, braided rope of many colors with two sections where it had untwisted enough to have several strands hanging within thin air but still connected, before everything twisted back together.
I pointed to the left gap. "That is Knights of the Old Republic. Male character, female character, light-side focus, dark-side focus, balanced focus, physical focus rather than the Force, different choices made along the way, all of them start and end the same way: Revan in their new identity wakes up on the Endar Spire, makes their way to Taris, finds several maps which lead them to the Star Forge" an image of that massive station appearing to my right "and Malak dies, the Sith Empire fracturing in the process, the Jedi all but purged but ready to start anew. No focus on Living versus Unifying, because that did not matter within the war, only the kind within the Light and the evil within the Dark. 'Proper Human History' reasserts itself, and we have but the basics of that story in the aftermath, all differences smoothed out and eaten by time."
I pointed to the gap on my right. "The Galactic Civil War and its consequences." the lonely thread on the left, I pointed at and a holographic label with 'Legends' on it, small images of Luke and Leia and Han and the Imperial Remnant and the Vong under the label. I pointed at the lonely thread on the right and a holographic label with "Disney" on it, showing the symbol for the First Order, and every major character of that timeline I could remember - or had met - under that one.
The third I labelled "Re-Entry: Journey of the Whills", showing Obi-Wan and Anakin standing near Rogue Squadron with all of the Spectres and Luke and Mara nearby, Obi-Wan in a tank top for the sole purpose of showing a blurred bit of blue-green shimmershade ink in representation of his marriage to Qui-Gon within the Re-Entry timeline. I sighed, knowing that I had loved that world, and that I would never see more of it, not in this galaxy.
We were far away and long ago, after all.
I shook myself. I had my own timeline to deal with, after all.
"So, why do I bring any of this up? Well, within Re-Entry, Obi-Wan was trying to show the Council the past. The way the Jedi of four thousand years previous, before the schism that would create the Sith in that timeline, saw the Force. Not the original view, which came before Emmaltine's time, which is parallel to my own view, not the absolutist stricture it is today, but as it was in Ood Bnar's time. Largely without the political structures of 'Living' Versus 'Unifying', because there was only The Force." My mood soured so heavily those ripples of calming Force energy started making the council's faces, even with what little attention I paid to them, crinkle with unease and fear. "And he got stonewalled by dogma, The Code, and fucking politics." I spat those words with venom, unable to keep my own sense of decorum over my distaste.
"Too little willingness to see anything but what they were already seeing. Eyes wide shut, and ears too - and Obi-Wan wasn't the only voice being verbally punched into submission. The Jedi were dying, the Council too stubborn to actuallly look at and think about what he was giving them - and likely to erupt into civil war because he found that Ood Bnar had grown up with a simpler, practically reversed version of the Code he'd grown up with. Instead of a 'There is no blank, only blank' formula, it was the same words with a yet; Ignorance, yet knowledge, for example. A far truer set of words, I find. Ignorance within the individual, yet knowledge beyond what should be possible through the Force."
"This is Impossible-" I barely acknowledged anything about the councilor who'd spoken in outrage beyond being male, having both expected someone to overcome my little calming 'spell' at some point and set up little knots of force energy to act as underpowered grenades to remind them that I would like to actually speak, not be spoken over.
"Much like the Council has spoken against myself, this past week." I added, a little more sharply than intended at the interruption. I glared at the floor, closing mental ears to everything because I did not want to hear anything negative about myself - I had been tired of such treatment more than a century ago, even before my first breaths within any Star Wars timeline. "I have been ignored, but I'm not so stubborn, so caring, as to yell at deaf ears, so I will simply say this once, and leave where I am not wanted.
"In the OtherWhen, it was time, split into multiple paths that would one day merge together. Here? It is a single timeline, but the cyclical nature of the universe has prophesied an end to this ignorance, the Jedi opening back up to the fullness of the Force. It is not some self-fulfilling prophecy, where I declare it and make it happen, or declare it in a way where you try to keep it from being fulfilled and it fulfills itself because of that action or any other variation. It is fact that I have felt and seen, a point that is as solid as Cortosis Red and Durasteel. The present has not been written, so all that is left is finding the road that would lead to it. In the end, it's simply a matter of gravity, and inevitability." A short pause as a long forgotten story came to mind, so I began to speak it, handing out wisdom I'd almost forgotten.
"In another world, I heard a story about a Jedi who knew about a prophecy about himself. Or, something to that effect. He became arrogant about knowing he would one day save a species, growing lax in his training and when the day came? He saved them.
"By getting sucked into an engine."
Even with my mental deafening, I could hear the startled silence, horror and dread of what could be connected to this story.
"I know that the Jedi will reach out to the Force, in its fullness, and grow again. But will it be reached through meditation, self-acceptance, and willingness? Or will I need to suffer the Jedi being purged in my lifetime again, a third time, allowing ignorance of political lines within a religion and so very few Jedi existing at all, to be the impetus that reaches it?"
"We are loved-"
"We have no idea how the public actually views us!" I snapped. "As for how it could happen? Calling the Sith as Extinct is a bit of a stretch." I drawled. "Kill every jedi, and you can still make more with knowledge and tools and the Force left behind. Or start again from within the Sith culture. The Sith? Are as much of a fact, an Idea, as the Jedi are at this point. You can't kill an idea. You can kill those who think of it or by it, you can ransack Korriban, but unless every bit is destroyed beyond doubt, every spirit excsized and Korriban itself turned into space dust, every bit of writing hunted down and burned like the Bible and Torah within Nazi Germany, the Galaxy will never be truly rid of them. Not unless they are destroyed by friendlier means, a method I never expect to see work, not within my lifetime." "Have I not destroyed my enemy when I have made him my friend?" Came to mind, much as Obi-Wan and his fogbank metaphor, but they weren't going to listen to that, not after ignoring me so much.
"The Sith, much like Criminals, were never eradicated, only driven underground, and they want us dead. It is up to those who live today to make decisions that will affect our descendants for the better. We can't do that if we're dead."
And with that, I turned, leather trench coat swirling behind me like their own cloaks as I sneaked as fast as possible away, heading for an unpopulated section of the main tower - a task far too easy to accomplish, given how it was built to house far more Jedi than now lived.
Running through stretches I'd known for more than six decades would be a decent, mindless distraction, however little it would actually help. I ignored the salt water, presumably from the dust if I was willing to care.
I'd said my piece. Now all that was left was to let them come to their own conclusions. Their lives were their own, not mine to do with as I saw fit.

God I want a time-travel fic of the variety where two characters that are like. Estranged marriage. Stuck in the past together. Reconnect as the only real touchpoint the other has to their old lives.
(I was watching the first episode of Outlander, for context.)
I kicked off with "well, obviously HanLeia from like a year before episode VII" because what says 'estranged but we still love each other' like HanLeia? I did consider like. Post-Empire Anidala but anything involving Vader turns into a war crimes discussion instead of estrangement so nah.
Next step: pick a drop point far enough back that they only have a vague idea of what's going on galactically, partly because so much of the information was scorched and burned, and also they've gotten old enough that some of the details weren't important. (The name of that bill that Palpatine got passed doesn't matter when discussing how he rose to power so much as the content, right?) This is Melida/Daan, where they both desperately want to help because dying children and also that's bb Obi-Wan but like. Absolutely none of the kids trust them.
And then my brain went "hey you know who would be fun to add? 23yo Padme who's already a Senator and seeing the Separatist crisis brewing but hasn't been targeted by Jango Fett yet." This detracts from the original intended plot but I got sucked in.
"Just tell people I'm an aunt you rarely got to see but always came home with stories about fighting pirates and liberating slaves with a smuggler and a loose sorta-Jedi, and you don't know if even a quarter of the stories are true, but it didn't matter when you were younger because all you cared about was that they were entertaining and came with souvenirs, like any eight-year-old"
Takes a lot of talking, bb!Obi and Padme are horrified by the future. (Most of the Young are just like 'okay cool let's get back to keeping US alive and you can talk about your weird Jedi things LATER')
Padme has no idea how to relate to Leia because Leia's just. A very odd person, but they're family, yes?
(Han is just like. Whelp. I do as Leia says. No, no, it doesn't get more complicated than that. She says jump and I don't even ask how high before I do it.)
Obi-Wan is almost crying because Leia is just. Taking charge and powerful and she recognizes "end the war with as few dead as possible" as a goal and she then does it with things like sabotaging weapons depots instead of hospitals and whatnot. Padme is horrified to find that all her political and academic expertise are less useful than her ability to grab a gun and Shoot Things, because she's not a General.
They get off-planet eventually, meet with the Jedi, etc.
Han gets sent off by Leia at one point to Tatooine, and she refuses to explain why to anyone until he comes back with a young lady by the name of Shmi who is just confused as fuck but Leia tells her "my father was a Skywalker, and I dreamed of where to find you because I have the Force" and Shmi is just like. Okay stranger lady. You took out my chip and offered to give me some cash and set me up wherever so I'll play along. Family, sure.
Han is probably bothering Qui-Gon because he is incredibly reminded of Future Old Ben, except Qui-Gon is somewhat younger, and looks much younger, on account of not spending twenty years on Planet That Hates You. (Han, you're almost seventy. Calm down.)
Padme thought she was a take-charge kind of gal but now she's met her future daughter and uh. Uh.
