Welcome to the completed tracklist and summarized story of William’s Wanton Weary Wiles!
I want to keep this project manageable and fun for me, while still being able to release the full story. Hence posting this, rather than each cover’s lyrics individually (what I initially intended :)). Most of what’s described here is what would be depicted in each song, though some events would only be implied/have happened outside of the actual “lyrics". These will be put in square brackets.
Basically everything under the cut!
Names and pronouns (Note: these will be used interchangeably. You may use whatever pronouns you want for any of them, these are just what I’ll be using/what feels right to me personally ^^ ref sheets are hyperlinked):
The Heart/Jimmy/Vestal/The Moon - He/it
The Mind/Laplace/Al/Marsha/The Sun - He/she
The Soul/Mr. Capgras/Cotard/The Stars - He/it
Whole/Will/William Racheal McSprout - He/Him
Warnings for: alcohol, abuse of psychiatry, manipulation, suicide attempt, discussions of mortality, and mental health issues. Also very long post + not written in entirely complete/gramatically correct sentences (my futile attempt to keep things concise /lh.)
Without further ado…
-iSH/Ryan I Wonder (Outro from Wanhope)
Opening song! Cotard pondering. Going back and forth between hopeful/determined and tired/giving up. Remembers every time they’ve been through this before - hopes it will go better this time but is losing faith.
2012 (Intro to Warray)
Sorta like Mucka Blucka - each character introduces themselves + a bit of the dynamics are shown. Welcome to the loop and endless suffering, babyy!
I think of “2012” here referring to the past loops. Heart/Mind don’t remember them, but they heard (from Soul) the world would turn to hell! /ref
“Did you lose yourself? It’s always in the last place that you’d check!” referring (mostly) to them splitting. “Losing” Wholeness. Do with that what you Will (ahahah)
The Song with Five Names, a.k.a. Soapbox Tao, a.k.a. Checkmate Atheists! a.k.a. Neospace Government, a.k.a. You Can Never Know
Similar to 2012 in the “introduction” sense. A little more of the trio each getting some time in the spotlight + sharing their thoughts.
“You can break a shovel when you break new ground, you dig dirt up when you dig deep down”--the more they try to form new solutions/the more times they split, the deeper they dig themselves into this metaphorical pit of dissonance.
Jimmy sings from the “sunshine is a gaslight” to “and that’s good enough to be not enough to be good enough for me!”, talking about Mind, accusing him of being fake and manipulative + claiming to be more capable and more deserving of power than her.
Laplace’s Angel
Essentially Mind’s rebuttal to the last part of TSW5N.
The trio are mostly equal at this point, but Laplace does have a bit more control than Jimmy.
This is essentially Laplace talking himself up + mocking Jimmy for lacking as much free will in this situation + expressing that if it were in her place, he would see her reasoning and do the same as she does.
Everything Is A Lot/Destroy To Enjoy
EiaL is mostly just Jimmy pondering/being generally unhappy.
He comes to a decision. This is Marsha’s fault - he’s ruining them. He forces Whole to avoid doing the things he enjoys! (drinking, spending money, etc. - self destructive habits which are arguably fine in low doses but should be metered).
[Marsha keeping things under control is good, but he does so to an extreme–deprives Whole of breaks/other needs in the interest of “staying productive”/trying to reach arbitrary “perfections” (more money, more benefitting others, less enjoying life, less rest). Obligatory Nobody-here-is-the-“villian”-or-“hero”. They’re all flawed but ultimately trying to do what they think is best for Whole.]
Vestal resolves he needs to take charge.
Front Street
I imagine this song happening in a bar in Marybell. Jimmy is getting reckless and self destructive in the name of feeling “free”. Drinking excessively and smashing bottles and such.
I’ve got the line “you say let loose, but you are lost” in my head as Marsha’s retort. Throughout the song as Jimmy tries to convince her and Cotard to “loosen up”, Marsha tries to express to him that this isn’t actually helping the Whole and is only hurting him (though the way he does so is fraught with resentment and only makes Jimmy want to ignore her).
Jimmy does not listen.
Memento Mori
Twist on the original. Instead of using inevitable death as a comfort/reason to enjoy life, Laplace is instead essentially saying “one day we’re all going to die, and with the way you’re doing things it’ll probably be your fault.”
[Laplace is making a decent point, but is largely using this as a way to put Jimmy down. More guilt-tripping/trying to emotionally manipulate him rather than actually properly communicating.]
Red Moon
Vestal singing to Cotard, trying to convince it to hand control over to him.
“We walk the equator chasing the light” referring to the loops - they all go around in circles chasing the idea of being Whole, but it never stays and they’re stuck chasing.
Vestal says they’ll only be able to “turn around” (break the cycle) with a Red Moon (because like. Heart is moon and Soul is red yeah.)
This leaves Mr. Capgras progressively getting more annoyed/angry. He knows Vestal thinks it’s doing what’s best for William, but is also aware that it largely wants power and the ability to do what it wants with no oversight. He’s pissed that Jimmy thinks he could be manipulated so easily and is exhausted with both his and Marsha’s vies for power
[Capgras is also frightened of both of them, even if he doesn’t show it. He’s worried about Laplace working/depriving Will to death, and he’s worried about Jimmy getting too reckless and over-indulging to the point where it gets them all killed. While CCCC’s Soul prioritizes ending the loops by any means necessary, Cotard is a lot more concerned with keeping Whole alive, regardless of how many times they have to go through Cacophony/Warray to ensure that, and regardless of how much suffering they're in.]
Jimmy Mushrooms’ Last Drink: Bedtime in Wayne, NJ
Jimmy!! Is Not Happy with the trio’s situation, and Laplace/Cotard’s halfhearted attempts at convincing him to keep going (“Jimmy, you’re fine”/”keep trucking it’s all in your mind”) don’t help.
Hitting a low point after a few days of self-destructive euphoria (see Front Street), and giving up on the idea that they could ever be whole.
Will is driving home from the bar (yes, very drunk. Don't drink and drive /srs) and Jimmy decides to try and end all their suffering, attempting to take control of Will and crash the car (“gaining speed, wrapping trees”).
BlackBoxWarrior - OKULTRA
[The crash didn’t work. Marsha jumped in, physically tearing Vestal away from the wheel.]
[Marsha generally presents himself as a sort of therapist/psychiatrist in occupation, though he has no one–aside from Jimmy who’s not paying for shit--to “treat”. Despite there being no real business, she has an office in Marybell and does extensive paperwork {which IS necessary because it gets Will to do his own work but that's a Whole Other Thing}. This is where Jimmy is locked in as both as punishment and a safety measure–equivalent of Apathy from CCCC. Room resembles the one at the end of the love me normally video.]
The first part of the song would be Laplace recounting “the Jimmy incident” (attempted crash). She goes on to basically torment Jimmy with overcomplicated medical terms and underhanded insults veiled by psychiatric jargon. She considers this both justified punishment, as well as the only way to get Vestal to improve or at the very least, cease to be a threat.
TLDR: Laplace maliciously and aggressively provides unhelpful psychiatric service to a very overwhelmed and trapped Jimmy.
Outliars and Hyppocrates: a fun fact about apples
Marsha is partially ranting about/mocking Vestal to Cotard, and partially continuing to mess with Jimmy to his face. “I doubt that you would even if you could change, the things that make you special are what make you strange!”
Mr. Capgras Encounters a Secondhand Vanity: Tulpamancer’s Prosopagnosia/Pareidolia (As Direct Result of Trauma to the Fusiform Gyrus)
Soul steps in. Could be very literally breaking down the door to Jimmy’s therapy room and getting between the two. Up for interpretation!
Think “You seem to forget you answer to me…” in terms of the themes/vibes.
Dr. Sunshine is Dead
Mr. Capgras is tired of both H/M’s pathetic attempts at manipulation. He doesn’t want himself or Will to “be” either of them (“I am not the sunshine, I am not the moon at night”)
Being earnest and trying to explain how he feels + reflecting on the loops and his identity.
He ends the song essentially saying “I could run the Whole on my own, but I want to give you two a chance to reconcile. I’ll wait.” (“I will be my sunshine, I will be my moon at night, I'm nowhere now, here's no one now to be. And if dreams can come true, what does that say about nightmares? I'll stay awake tonight…”)
Skeleton Appreciation Day in Vestal, NY (Bones)
Vestal and Laplace take a shot at reconciliation. Jimmy starts by expressing how he feels and asking Mind to do the same - “show me your bones” and “Mind unweave again” as metaphors for opening up emotionally.
Love, Me Normally
And he does! Open up! Wow!
Marsha begins to genuinely share his emotions. He expresses fears about Jimmy/the dangers he puts them all in with its recklessness. Admits that he does wish he could “loosen up”/encourage Will to enjoy himself. However, Laplace feels Vestal does it to such an extreme that she needs to over-correct (depriving Will of his wants/needs to keep up appearances/focus on responsibilities).
Falling up
Think of this as a sort of Variations on a Cloud equivalent - one last song together before they become whole
I honestly don’t have a very thorough plan for this at the moment - might elaborate later
White Noise (Outro From Warray)
This is basically them combining. Some final contemplation/reflection from the three as separate entities, but it fades into Whole. Gonna leave this one mostly up for interpretation/to you all’s imagination.
Half Decade Hangover (Intro to Waltz)
Will is recovering from/sorry for what happened while he was split (though he doesn’t know that’s what it was, as he’s not aware of HMS. For him and everyone else in the “real world” it was just a general mental health episode).
Honestly the meaning doesn’t change that much from the original :’)
…And If I Did, You Deserved It
Completely implausible. Chonny would never cover this one /silly
This would be the CJ version with some lyrics altered to make it less about dealing with “fame” and more about day-to-day relationships.
The Main Character
Possibly one of the most accurately reflective of Will’s personality. The perfect(ly dysfunctional) mix of self absorbed, self loathing, and self destructive.
Um, It’s Kind Of A Lot
Not gonna say this is canon, but I think it would be really funny to change it from being afraid to being pissed off at everything. “I love you so much, it scares me half to death makes me really fucking angry”
This would be about LI.
Against The Kitchen Floor
Mostly directed at LI + somewhat aimed at other people in his life.
He’s sorry! He promises he’s doing his best! He just. Hasn’t learned how to be human as you are yet. /lyr
Yeah I’m not even sure if I’d change any lyrics for this one. Meaning stays the same, man this guy sucks [/aff]
Willard!
Will finds and befriends a rat in his house during a depressive period. He names it Ben (Willard movie reference yayay), cleans it up, and essentially adopts it. Ben appears in Cotard's house after this. He takes care of him (w/ some help from Marsha/Jimmy) and his physical health reflects Will’s health. Very sweet.
Vampire Reference In A Minor Key
It’s Will about himself in relation to LI 👍(not much to say on this one lol)
Whiny Fuck William’s Woke Pie, Weasel, and American Cheese Emporium a.k.a. “Mr. Ben is in the Macca’s again” (Feat. Cheese by Tommy McMinchin) [From “W.F.W.’s WWA: getting auto-suplexed”]
Comedic relief?
Don't look too deep into it idk what the fuck I was doing either
Cicada Days (Outro from Waltz)
This is still a little about LI, but more significantly about Will spiraling again. Very seriously/literally “losing touch”. Things get better for a time, but he still hurts people. Thing’s might’ve been better for a time, but he’s still hurt. Thing’s can get better, but it will take a lot more to “fix” him, and that’s if “fixing” is even a possibility.
Self- (Intro to Wanhope)
Hey I mean . at least Cotard is back?
Yeah. Timeloop. I’ll leave this one up to your imagination (for now, anyways :))

do you want to write a character analysis for your favourite RTC character?
Ricky. . . oh Ricky. My beloved
I've drawn this guy (or girl if we're talking about Savannah). . . over 400 times. Yep, that's right, 400 times. I never get tired of him. I love paying him homage. He deserves it. And so I will try my best. However please be advised this proooooooobably will come across less like a scholarly analytic essay and more just bunny icepoptroll ranting and raving about their boy Ricky yet again lol
There's really no ONE analysis I can give to Ricky because there have literally been hundreds of different portrayals of him and they're all very different. That's what I love about Ricky: he's anything and everything. Ricky can be a big tall hairy dude, or a hundred pound blonde girl with little twin braids. He can be plain and reserved, or have pink hair and pronouns and a rainbow wheelchair. There are so many different ways for him to look, but also so many different ways to deliver his lines with different attitudes and personalities and mannerisms, and they pretty much all work. I'm actually friends and/or mutuals with some Rickies! Imo anyone who identifies with Ricky and puts heart and soul into playing him is an automatic Cool Cat. Anytime I stagedoor at rtc you know whoever played Ricky is gonna be the first one I talk to lol
Here's an interesting thing I picked up on that maybe some of you might have noticed too: there is nothing in the script that concretely states that Ricky lives with a mother and father. They are referred to only as "the Potts family." Maybe he has two moms. Maybe you kinda jive with him living with his grandparents. Maybe he was adopted. Maybe he has a sibling. Or multiple siblings. This is another facet of Ricky to which there are really no wrong answers.
Something I really love about Ricky is how self-actualized he is. Just like he said after his song, he's the same person he always was. SABM was not the first time he'd ever had confidence, it was just the first time he'd been given the opportunity to show it. All of this wonderful, creative, bombastic energy was inside him all along. He always knew and loved who he was. The way he so loved the world despite having grown up in it ignored and condescended to just goes to show how capable he is of finding beauty and joy even in dark places. He has a very high capacity to forgive, but also a desire to teach and guide. He is kind, but not naive, and he recognizes what's messed up about the world. He is less concerned about Ocean bagging on him individually and more so concerned that her entire worldview is totally warped. He is compassionate and wise beyond his years and I think all of this combined really makes "Space Jesus" an appropriate title for him.
And of course, I have to say I do not recognize the post-2022 rewritten backstory as canon. For Ricky to be on stage as a visibly-disabled character is so important and that's why I draw him as such regardless of which production I'm referencing. Everyone adores all the different interpretations of other characters there are out there and I feel like if I only drew versions of him from productions that used older scripts, while other characters' stories are the same across hundreds of different performances, I'd be seriously throwing the baby out with the bathwater, especially since Ricky is one of if not THE most diversely-portrayed character in the entire show. He deserves the same amount of archiving and celebration and excitement surrounding different approaches to him that all the other characters get, but his story should have never been messed with. It's a good thing my drawings aren't bound by any licensing agreements--- I can celebrate his versatile nature while also presenting him the way he should be presented, in all his disabled glory. And with that, I ask everyone to please not forget that Ricky IS a historically disabled character-- please don't let this ill-conceived rewrite color your view of him because it was nothing more than a sad attempt at a "quick fix" to a much, much larger issue.

so im following you for trc mainly, but i did used to watch 911 too (this was long before bucktommy even happened and i stopped somewhere around s4) so i really have no context for the current drama taking place. i am curious though - why are people so unhappy with bucktommy? is it just cause most people are buddie shippers or is there something else? not trying to stir the pot or anything im honestly just curious
Bahahah omg sorry to my TRC people I have been actually going off the rails about 9-1-1.
Ok so I am definitely a Buddie stan however, my most prominent reason I don’t like Tommy is his behaviour in Season 2 (in case you forgot Tommy is in Hen Begins, Chimney Begins and Bobby Begins Again having been apart of the 118 before Buck joins). In these episodes Tommy is very antagonistic to Hen and Chimney with some hella racist and sexist moments. HE LITERALLY REFERS TO CHIMNEY AS THE DELIVERY GUY. Whilst not nearly as bad as Gerrard he is not at all likeable (or interesting). This behaviour is pretty much shrugged under the rug when Tommy is randomly brought back to the show 5 seasons later as a love interest for Buck.
Tommy also seems to not really undertand Buck. The best example is Chimney’s bachelor party when he doesn’t get dressed up with Buck for the 80s theme Buck planned. And then Eddie literally plans to do a couples costume with Buck in comparison. Not to mention at said bachelor party Buck and Eddie are all over each other (watch that ep ‘There Goes the Groom’ if you want a comparison in chemistry).
Frankly I think a lot of people just got hot and heated over Buck kissing a guy and that immediate gratification became a vehicle for the ship to gain popularity. There is no care for the romance. I’m not going to get into some of the politics of the fandom fights however there has definitely been some xenophobic attitudes towards Eddies character and just the Eddie hatred from Bucktommy fans is super weird. There is way more stuff surrounding this and in general just examples of Bucktommy being a bad ship and Tommy being condescending. Him calling Buck Evan, getting him basketball tickets when he hates basketball, low key pressuring him to come out.
I’m not apart of the community so my input here probably isn’t that comprehensive but I think the conversation around queerbaiting is notable. Bucktommy kind of feels like a bandaid on the queerbaiting allegations surround Buddie. The show notably has lots of representation but none of the queer ships are between two main characters. Like no the most popular fanon ship can’t become canon but you can have this half assed ship. Although in the long run I do think Buck coming out as bisexual first and having this relationship is a great potential segway to Buddie, especially if they pull of Eddies repression storyline.
Buck and Eddie out of the main cast have had the most tumultuous record of relationships. None of their relationships feel important compared to the other relationships because they aren’t paired with other main characters so they aren’t as pivotal to the story overall. All of the other MC’s (I’m talking like the MAIN CAST) are paired up with other MC’s. This excludes Hen and Karen (with Karen technically being reoccurring) however, their relationship is notably pre established.
It is so clear to me that Tommy is a distraction for Buck from his true feelings for Eddie. The show needs to actually let that romance play out. No relationships Buck or Eddie get into outside of eachother will ever live up to the other main ships because they cannot compete with the the history that the show establishes between the two.
At this point Tommy has even brought up Eddie as the competition and accused Buck of having feelings for him. As long as Eddie breathes then Tommy has to settle for being second best in Bucks eyes because Bucks only defence to that accusation is Eddies alleged straightness.
Imagine your ship hinging on the fact that one of the characters was settling because the person they truly want doesn’t like them back. What strong foundations! Especially strong when Eddie’s arc this season feels like an inevitable coming out is upon us.
Like Buck literally says “I don’t have to sleep with everyone I have feelings for and I don’t have feeling for everyone I sleep with” after this. He has in canon essentially said I have feelings for Eddie — I don’t have feelings for Tommy and then Tommy leaves. If that isn’t the nail in the ship coffin I don’t know what is.
If Buck and Eddie go canon it will genuinely be one of the greatest queer slow burns on television. They deserve to have a dynamic relationship that is equal to the other main ships on the show in terms of screen time and importance.
Overall it’s definitely a bit of a ship war and like people are entitled to their opinions but it actually has larger implications for the shows representation and character arcs as a whole. Tommy is not the epitome of evil but the slander is defintely valid. Honesty I just don’t understand why people prefer him and Buck when Buddie has such rich history and potential. The only thing going for Bucktommy is that it’s canon — well WAS canon rip.
Sorry this was so long and unedited and I’m definitely missing loads of stuff!! I’d recommend you start watching the show again however the last three episodes have been TERRIBLE so maybe just go watch some Buddie edits on TikTok.
#grammar and spelling? what is that#the length of this is ridiculous#I honestly didn’t even realise how much of a buddie stan and defender I was until writing this out lol#I actually started the show for Maddie and Chimney 💀#buddie#911 abc#evan buckley#eddie diaz#anti bucktommy#see how I don’t tag the ship I’m bashing very mindful very demure#911

I remember stealing borrowing my friend’s Robin amiibo specifically to use it in Fates and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Here’s the long and short of it:
If you scan a Marth, Ike, Robin or Lucina amiibo in Fates, they’ll show up in your My Castle (the hub world; in lore it’s basically a tiny pocket dimension made by Corrin’s dragon sister. If you’re a JoJo fan, in practice it’s kind of like how Coco Jumbo is used) and can be recruited after scanning them a couple times. You do need to fight them first though.
The dialogue the amiibo characters have upon being summoned, Robin specifically, implies that they were summoned directly from Smash (rather than from Altea/Tellius/Ylisse). I always interpreted it as Master Hand sending them there to help Corrin out. What a bro.

This quote also follows Robin struggling to remember his own name upon being summoned, implying he got a concussion in Smash.
This next part is interesting, but it’s not gonna make much sense if you aren’t familiar with Awakening or Fates’ stories. Smash fans are also chronically allergic to Fire Emblem, so I’m gonna explain everything as best I can so anyone can follow along. Buckle in.
The main plot of Awakening revolves around Lucina traveling back in time to stop her father Chrom’s assassination, which ends up being the catalyst that brings about the apocalypse. That’s common knowledge at this point, but what’s less well known by Smash fans is that Lucina doesn’t go back alone. The kids of the other members of Chrom’s army go back with her as well, but they get separated once they arrive in the past. While Lucina will automatically join Chrom and Robin after chapter 13 of Awakening, the other child units are technically optional, as their existence, stats, and hair color all depends on who you, the player, pair together in your army.
Yes, half of Awakening (and to a lesser extent, Fates) turns into a big shipping simulator.
Of these optional child characters, three of them are important to us right now: Owain, Severa, and Inigo. These guys show up and are playable in Fates under the aliases of Odin Dark, Selena, and Laslow.

If you’re wondering how/why these guys are in Fates, it’s because they were voted Awakening’s most popular child characters in Japan and Fates was scared to deviate too far from Awakening Corrin’s multiverse dragon dad Anankos plucked them out of their Outrealm and sent them to Nohr to help Corrin out. What a bro.
What are Outrealms, you might be asking? they’re just a name for other universes/timelines. Gameplay-wise, they exist mostly for the sake of justifying DLC maps…mostly. As we see with the three characters above, there are some extremely niche story applications.
TLDR: Owain/Odin, Severa/Selena, and Inigo/Laslow all come from Awakening, but were sent to Fates by Corrin’s dad, which takes place in another timeline/dimension/universe.
What does all of this have to do with amiibo, though?
Remember, in order to recruit the amiibo characters, you need to fight them first. If you fight Robin or Lucina with Odin, Selena, or Laslow, you’ll get some special dialogue, which you can view here (Robin) or here (Lucina).
Some interesting tidbits about these encounters:
Robin doesn’t recognize any of the Awakening cast, but Lucina instantly does. This implies a couple of things: either the Robin and Lucina we see in Smash are taken from different parts of Awakening’s timeline (contradicted by their reveal trailer for Smash 4), Robin never met/recruited any other child characters besides Lucina (improbable, especially in Owain/Odin’s case where he’s basically free), or Robin’s still nursing that concussion from earlier (plausible).
Robin can potentially be either Odin, Selena, or Laslow’s father. The direction they took with Odin’s character in Fates seems to imply that Robin is his dad, but none of their dialogue together suggests this at all. This all further supports my idea that Tharja is Robin’s canon wife, under which case none of these guys would be his kids.
On a related note, Laslow can potentially be Lucina’s brother, but given that the two of them flirt with each other in their conversation, it seems likely this isn’t the case. Most people accept that this wouldn’t be the case anyways.
Ok, for real, here’s the interesting lore. Odin, Selena, and Laslow all come to the conclusion that amiibo!Lucina, the one from Smash that you can summon in Fates, isn’t their Lucina, even though she recognizes them. Presumably, this is also the case for Robin, even if this is never brought up when they speak to him. This can imply a couple of things. The most obvious one is that the characters in Smash aren’t actually the characters themselves, but toy/trophy recreations of them. But if that were the case, it begs the question of how/why Master Hand would be able to send them to Corrin’s My Castle in the first place. It could also just imply that amiibo!Lucina and Robin are from another Outrealm than Odin, Selena, and Laslow originate from, which is an explanation I don’t like but fuck it there are a handful of DLC maps in Awakening where this exact scenario happens so it would make sense. Go crazy, headcanoners.
Oh, and in Japanese, Marth uses his down taunt line (“minna, miteite kure!”) for one of his crit quotes.
youtube
The only other amiibo lore relating to Smash I can think of comes from the Switch port of Bayonetta 2. Depending on what amiibo you scan in, Rodin will leave a different message for you.

Bayonetta 2 released on Switch before Ultimate came out, so Bayonetta did kinda bring Rodin along with her as an assist trophy. What a bro.
So who was gonna tell me that there's Smash Bros lore exclusively found via scanning amiibo into Fire Emblem Fates

Actually thinking very hard about what, exactly, is compelling about Relvin. imo, there is an inherent mundanity to him as a character--that's really the core of what he is, Just Some Dude, caught in the crosshairs of something much bigger than him that he can't understand let alone fight. A guy who tries, but it struck so deeply by decades of grief that even the trying can be hard. A man who loves his daughter but doesn't know how to help her and maybe can't stand how much she looks like her mother. Very mundane. Very human. Very relatable, both the good parts of him and the ugly ones. I know that I personally find a lot of interest and texture in what the mundane looks like, especially in contrast to the wild escapades of adventurers or powered people. It's why, perhaps, Relvin is a character that feels more relatable and approachable and miles more understandable than someone like Liliana, who's motives are opaque, who's goals are unclear, and who's intentions are currently unknown/incoherent. We can sit here and ask ourselves "what does she want?" until kingdom come, but even Imogen doesn't know and she is also sick of the not knowing. Liliana wants to free Imogen--but who knows how. She wants Imogen to run, but doesn't tell her why. She left Imogen to find answers, but we have no idea if she really accomplished that goal despite repeated conversations with her (all of which essentially repeat the same info shared in the previous convo).
At least we know what Relvin wants. Wanted. To build a family. For the two halves to become a better whole. That's approachable, that's human, that's tragic in the face of everything that's happened, and, yes, that's mundane. But god is there texture to that mundanity where there isn't all that much even in the comparatively extraordinary life of Liliana.
#really just thinking about why average and mundane is interesting in this context#because just because something is extraordinary does not mean it is more interesting!#I think some of the best characters/most interesting stories can come from a place of relative mundanity#and the fact that the core of Relvin's character can be established so strongly in so little time (one convo) compared to liliana#is telling perhaps#anyway not maintagging this lmfao#sorry for the relvin-posting today but I'm beset by relvin thots and tbf I'm just making good on my url change. so

So, full disclosure, I haven't been a Solas fan before.
I am now.
And that's because of Veilguard and the many, many ways in which I felt let down by this game.
The aspect that bothers me most is the reduction of nuance and complexity.
Rook's hero's cakewalk (because “journey” really isn't the right word) is a ready-made path that offers no deviation at all and never challenges the player in any meaningful way.
Sure, you can spend some time pondering the pros and cons of saving Treviso or Minrathous. Ultimately, it makes no difference. Rook does their best, they just can’t be in two places at once.
Same with the companion character arcs. What does it mean if you decide to you turn Emmrich into a lich? For the most part, it's idle musing. Indulgence. He’ll be happy either way, there are no real stakes. Yeah, your actions do have consequences, just not the sort of consequences that make a substantial difference. It’s the illusion of choice – reduced to cosmetics.
The problems with decisions that cost nothing is that they don’t feel like an accomplishment. They also don’t allow for character growth. Rook doesn’t change, they remain static. Even the section in the Fade where Rooks faces their regrets is easy and comparatively lightweight. Varric was killed by Solas, Harding resp. Davrin died in combat and either Bellara or Neve was abducted by Elgar’nan. It’s not like Rook’s decisions actually caused these events, it’s not like Rook actually failed through a choice they had to make that turned out to be the wrong one. Everyone was there willingly and volunteered to fight the good fight. Rook’s regrets are not about real guilt, they are about feeling sad and guilty. And that – it needs to be said – is not the same thing. At all.
At the same time, the story carefully avoids any kind of true ethical dilemma.
It's not even about the lack of mean or edgy dialogue options; that’s just a symptom. The cause is the writers’ unwillingness to let realism intrude in Rook’s fairytale – the lack of anything that would require Rook to compromise on morals, or fight temptation. Rook is never faced with any sort of moral conundrum, or allowed to act out any kind of vice that realistic characters have. In its straight-path simplicity, Rook's story is apparently written for children and people who remain child-like in their yearning for simple, uncontested truths.
Of all the sorts of conflicts that a story can offer, Veilguard carefully avoids the most realistic and (in my opinion) interesting ones: Character vs. self and character vs. society, aka, politics. The game firmly refuses to go there. To the point where it creates a completely unrealistic consensus on all sides that eliminates yet another sort of conflict: character vs. character.
If Rook and their companions would talk politics, they’d all be on the exact same side. In a two party state, they’d all cast the same vote.
I am sure that there are many players who feel comforted and reassured by that fact, who sincerely believe that this is how stories should be written. That stories should reflect the world not as it is but as they think it should be. But for everyone who likes their stories a little more realistic, that lack of meaningful interpersonal conflict, that lack of real diversity which comes not from appearance but from different cultures and opposing viewpoints amounts to a frankly cringe-worthy, artificial and juvenile surface-level interaction between characters. Or, to phrase it differently: the diversity remains skin-deep and doesn’t extend to the philosophical, and even in the few instances where it does, it shies away from the political.
Which means that the only conflicts that remain are the most boring and stereotypical ones: character vs. monsters resp. the supernatural, where all foes are evil in the blandest way (Supremacist Venatori! Fascist renegade qunari! Power-hungry necromancers!). These conflicts are resolved through exploring maps and endless, repetitive combat.
The only thing that brings a bit of nuance to the game is Solas’s story. And there is an element of character vs. character in Rook’s and Solas’s relationship, but the sad truth is that what could have been a fascinating mirrored character journey falls flat for all the reasons already explained – because where Solas is a character as layered and controversial as it gets, Rook is anything but.
Solas’s story shows how even people with the best intentions and the greatest integrity are ultimately broken by what life throws at them, both by the decisions that are forced upon them and the choices they make on their own. It shows how a prolonged war is always a sunk cost fallacy: I’ve gone this far, if I stop now, it was all for nothing.
Rook’s victories, on the other hand, come without a cost – both in terms of moral corruption and in accountability. The guilt Solas bears is real. The fight against the titans, followed by his war against the Evanuris, requires compromising his own morals, one day at a time, one century after another, he’s trying to save the world yet doomed to fail. Sacrificing the spirits to win a battle after the war has gone this far? Every single war leader around the globe would make the same decision. In fact, all of them do: They do sacrifice the lives of others if it will help them win, they do send soldies into the trenches to die, whether these soldiers want to or not, and they are rarely, if ever, truthful about the reasons why.
In a certain way, the story of the spirit of wisdom turned flesh is reminiscent of the biblical Fall of Man: the original sin. Solas has fallen, and he’s broken. In trying to heal the world, he’s trying to heal himself. The burden is too heavy, the responsibility to great, the knowledge that he is responsible for all of it too devastating. Solas’s greatest conflict is character vs. self. It has the potential to be great. In a way, it is. It’s the single redeeming quality that, depending on your interpretation of what went on behind the scenes, the writers managed to salvage from the original concept of Dreadwolf or the lone pillar that withstood all their attempts to bring it down.
Only sadly, infuriatingly, in the end, that fallen hero’s ending is put into the hands of a protagonist who judges him from the perspective of someone who has never even stumbled – not because they are wiser, braver, or kinder. No, just because the writers were gracious – or cowardly? – enough to never let them fail.
The game gives Rook a moral high ground which isn’t earned in the slightest because Rook never had to walk even a quarter of a mile in Solas’s shoes. They don’t know what they would have done in his stead, they have no idea what it actually means to see the sorry shape the world is in and know that it was your hands that shaped it. And even where Rook might actually be culpable – the interruption of Solas’s ritual that freed the remaining Evanuris – anyone is quick to assure Rook that it wasn’t their fault.
Whatever regrets Rook carries, they’re born from self-doubt and trauma response. Survivor’s guilt, mostly. When compared to Solas’s immense guilt, Rook’s regrets are, for lack of a better term, insignificant. That Rook manages to face them doesn’t mean that they are more truthful or emotionally mature, it just means that Rook’s story is a tale for children and Solas’s is not.
It’s not that I’m necessarily opposed to the idea that the player decides Solas’s fate through their actions. It’s the injustice of it all that bothers me: The player is led through a game that provides a safe space for their character, one that is devoid of any interpersonal conflict and any ethical quandary. Rooks succeeds through kindness and heroism and taking their companions on team bonding exercises.
As if Solas could have won the war against the Evanuris if he’d taken the time to take his companions on coffee dates.
The juxtaposition – Rook vs. Solas – fails, simply because of this deep divide. Rook’s story is detached from reality and yet Rook gets to be Solas’s judge, jury, and executioner. On what grounds?
As I said, right in the beginning, I haven’t been a Solas fan before. But by the end of Veilguard, I was firmly, irrevocably, Team Solas, just because I was so annoyed that the narrative put Rook in a position of moral superiority. I detested my own character. Jesus, what a goody two-shoes! I was rooting for Solas simply because his story was so much more: a genuine tragedy, a study in complexity. Rook, on the other hand, remains bland, snotty, unchanged. Untried.
The thing is, I don’t believe that my reaction was one the writers had intended. I strongly feel that they didn’t mean for me to pick up on their double standard, that they expected me to walk away fully satisfied, convinced that Rook and The Team were the Good Guys because they went on picnics and petted the griffon, their final victory well-earned and just. If only Solas had had a Team and taken care of their emotional needs – he could have taken down the Evanuris with nary a scratch!
It’s all so very disingenuous.
Rook and, by extension, the player exist in a bubble of sanitized content. That is clearly deliberate. The player is meant to like it there. (In that sense, it’s only logical that they changed the title from Dreadwolf to Veilguard.) And clearly, it does resonate with a certain kind of their player base: mostly with people, I think, who would like their real life to be a bubble too and whose only experience with moral corruption is when they find it in others.

I love Izutsumi. She's got a great design, she's a fun addition to the main party, she adds some new tension, and she's honestly one of the reasons I read dungeon meshi in the first place. I mean, "the most cat to ever girl" is an extremely appealing hook to anyone who loves cats and girls (me, I love cats and girls).
However, while I have always liked Izutsumi, I finished the story kind of feeling like I didn't really get her. I felt like I had a decent grasp on her character an character arc (she's a traumatized teen given space to feel safe and open up, and because of that she realizes that she can't grow without letting go of the coping mechanisms she once needed). But I didn't feel like I really understood her role in the story as a whole.
She follows the group of her own accord, after a coincidental meeting and a misunderstanding of what they can do for her. She's never super invested in saving Falin, at least not compared to the rest of the group. Though they do help her escape Maizuru's shackles, and are clearly good for her in general, she doesn't really have a healing Moment with the group the way that Senshi does with the hippogriff soup.
And yet, she gets an entire chapter, the third-to-last chapter, dedicated to exploring her growth and future. She's the one who frames much of the falling action, who lets us check in with everyone. She's the one who helps talk Laios into accepting his role as king. She may join the story part way through, but she is there for most of it. So Izutsumi! What's your deal!?
Well, I think I've come up with an answer, at least for myself, that I really like. Two of them, even! Though they both really work together to form the overall point - Izutsumi is the character that most helps the story face towards the future. Here's why I think that.
So the first of these "ah-ha" moments was when I realized that Izutsumi really is the best supporting evidence for Laios' point about the good things that wouldn't have happened if Falin hadn't died.
If Falin hadn't been eaten by the dragon, Izutsumi probably would still be a slave. It was because of Shuro and Laios' parties both being in the dungeon to rescue Falin, as well as Marcille's use of ancient magic in the resurrection, that she got the chance to escape. None of that would have been the case if Falin hadn't died. Shuro wouldn't have separated from the group and joined up with his retainers, Marcille wouldn't have revealed her knowledge of ancient magic, and Izutsumi never would have even met any of them. They are only part of her life because of Falin's death.
Though this isn't explicitly pointed out by Laios or Izutsumi in the scene, I do think you can very much feel the presence of it. For one, when Marcille reflects on the journey and how much it made her realize she didn't want to lose everyone, her relationship with Izutsumi is prominent:
It's the main original group at the top and center, but when you read it right to left, it’s Izutsumi and Marcille who might catch your eye first. And it's specifically Marcille and Izutsumi's relationship on display here, not just Izutsumi's presence in the group in general.
Also, after Laios' statement about how none of their adventure would have happened without Falin dying, it is Izutsumi who gets the final word:
Izutsumi is also the one here who is the most forward-facing. Chilchuck is trying to correct Laios, Senshi is focused on the immediate future, and Izutsumi is talking about her new goal.
And I want to talk about that goal in general as well, because it’s also interesting how it comes up. In that moment, everyone is trying to remind Marcille of her less destructive desires - to eat food, to share it with them, and to meet Chilchuck's family. All of which are previously established, existing desires. When prompted by Chilchuck to join in, however, Izutsumi offers something new:
That's interesting, isn't it? It's kind of funny, of course, to see her rambling on about a completely new thing, her own personal motive, in the middle of everyone working together to reach out to Marcille. Izutsumi doesn't even know who Yaad is! But at the same time, it’s kind of meaningful. Amidst the focus on desires that everyone already had, she adds a completely new one to the mix. It’s even the final bridge that lets Laios reach Marcille.
It is, in fact, even an idea that comes back later to help out another lord of the dungeon. The idea of finding new goals and feeling new desires... this is exactly how Kabru reaches out to Mithrun, after the Winged Lion is gone
So yeah, Izutsumi's presence here, both in what she's actively choosing to say as well as what she represents of the consequences of Falin's death, supports the story's ideas of moving forward. Of accepting the past, and finding new reasons to live.
Which is all really good, and that alone works pretty well as an answer to what Izutsumi's role in the story is.
But oh, oh. There's more. Something I realized after having thought of all this, because I still couldn't let go of the feeling that there was still something I was missing.
And as I reviewed the things I loved about Izutsumi - her sometimes unhealthy ways of coping with trauma, her struggles with isolation, her skill with fighting, her selfishness contrasted with the ways she grows to care for and protect the group, her perpetually guarded nature, born from the seeming impossibility of ever fitting in or finding a safe place to just be herself - I realized something.
Izutsumi...
is a foil to Falin.
Where Falin copes with isolation and trauma by being eternally caring and struggling to say no to people, Izutsumi copes by constantly saying no to everything she can. Falin is often considered selfless, but does have selfish desires that she can’t easily express until a moment of crisis. Izutsumi is delightfully selfish, but chooses to stick by her friends when they need her. They are both transformed, against their will, into partly monstrous hybrids, and they both will have to live with that - there is no undoing what has been done to them.
Falin anchors the group in the past. Izutsumi pulls them towards the future. Neither would find freedom without the other - it is Falin's death that leads to Izutsumi joining the party, and likewise, it is Izutsumi who inspires the realization of how they can save Falin.
And Falin is her future, as much as Izutsumi is Falin's. Both learn to be a little more like each other, even though they never meet. Falin gets a little more selfish. Izutsumi gets a little more willing to bend.
In this context, I feel like I have finally started to understand just how important Izutsumi is to the story. She is a proof that they cannot just go back, and she is a clawed, happy-to-scratch-anyone-who-pisses-her-off reminder, at that. In any conversation about what the group wishes would have happened with Falin, she cannot be ignored or brushed aside.
She is a reminder that, even in the midst of a tragedy so big it feels like a shadow you will never escape, you have yet to met all the people you will love. Hell, some of those people might even be catgirls. We should all be so lucky.

wish lantern rewrite
I can’t be the only one that wishes we had actually traveled to a new location… that we had learned about a new culture and holiday… that Riddle had actually had more character development in Wish Lantern instead of being cooped up in the library, being forced to play pretend princess in order to get out, and give like maybe a handful of lines max in the second half of the event 😭 What we ended up getting was fun too, but I keep thinking about the missed opportunities and how great this story event could have been.
If Twst won’t give it to me then I will have to cook my own food 😤
Here’s how I would write Wish Lantern if I was in the Twst writing room:
Since Riddle is the SSR, I feel the story and its set-up should center him. I’m thinking maybe he’s invited to (or told by his mother to attend) some kind of conference or event in the Kingdom of Heroes or the Sunshine Lands for aspiring medical mages. Let’s say it is being held in the same place where the story of the Princess in the Tower originated because the Sundrop flower mentioned in the tale has miraculous healing properties (and the city/kingdom has since become known for its medical advances).
Riddle is uneasy about going there by himself (the implication being that this event is set after book 1 and, more specifically after book 6, when Riddle expresses to Azul he has been considering pursuing law instead of magic medicine/the career his mother chose for him). Maybe he mentions this unease around Deuce, that he feels obligated to go because “Mother knows best… She has always known what is beat for me, hasn’t she?” It could even be in the library. Say that Riddle is brushing up for the conference and happens to run into him, who is looking for a book to help with completing an assignment. After listening to Riddle’s woes, Deuce, being one of the people who knows about his dorm leader’s complicated feelings toward his mother and finding his own independence, offers to come along as emotional support.
As for how Jack gets involved, he’s Deuce’s club member. Maybe he overhears Riddle talking about sports medicine or panels presented by medical mages who work with athletes, or Deuce mentions it in a club meeting. Jack becomes interested because he’s the type of person that’s always looking for ways to enhance his training and to learn more about this subject.
Kalim can either join because he's conveniently in the library + wants to learn more about poisons and antidotes (on his own self-development journey to be more self-sufficient instead of relying on Jamil all the time) or because the Asims are sponsors of the event and he gets a free invite through his Rich Privilege.
Use the usual "Grim overhears and whines until he and Yuu get invited to go along" excuse or maybe have Yuu and Grim come because they, too, want to be emotional support for Riddle. (They could have heard from Deuce?) With that, we have all of the main characters for this event assembled.
Even though this is a rewrite, I'm going to try and follow the conventions of OTHER "hometown" events. That means most of this rewritten event will be exploring the new area, learning about its customs and traditions, souvenir shopping, and sampling food. This would be a great chance to, of course, throw in Tangled references. Because I proposed that this event be focused on a conference for aspiring medical mages, we can also learn more lore about what medical technology and practices exist in Twisted Wonderland and how magic has played a part in advancing medicine.
So it turns out, there's a festival going on in the area at the same time as the conference. That's because there's a holiday in this kingdom that celebrates the Princess in the Tower finding her way home by following a trail of lanterns. Since the conference doesn't start until the next day, we can go out and enjoy the festivities! (Riddle can be hesitant at first, but the others convince him to loosen up.)
The new outfits + hair can be explained away as part of local traditions. Everyone is provided with a potion that lengthens their hair so they can emulate the Princess in the Tower. Or maybe there can be a potion-making station, and length still correlates with the skill at which you were able to brew it. (In this version, the hair lengthening potion isn't made with super rare ingredients; it is something easily accessible for even non-mages to brew and can be made cheaply.) YES, THAT MEANS WE GET LONG HAIR GRIM.
Local specialties could include dishes mentioned or depicted in Tangled, like hazelnut soup (Rapunzel's favorite).
HERE ARE SOME CUTE INTERACTION IDEAS BASED ON RAPUNZEL'S OWN EXPERIENCES IN CORONA: the gang doing chalk drawings and clowning on each other's artistic abilities (or lack thereof), trying out cupcakes (the reasoning being that they're "single servings" so it's okay for Riddle to indulge), exploring bookshops, painting on the walls, and everyone joining in a big group dance! (For the dance, maybe there’s a competition to see who can drag in the most bystanders into the dance and Riddle gradually finds his footing in that + is crowned the winner?) There could even be a tavern that pays homage to The Snuggly Duckling.
While we're out having fun, there should be a consistent pattern of Riddle having to be convinced that it's okay to be participating in these activities. He feels that he should be focusing on studying for the conference, but the others are there to reassure him it's okay to take breathers.
"You won't perform at your best if you're always at 100%. In terms of a workout, you'd be asking to pull a muscle if you push yourself to exercise without end." (Jack)
"Mmm? But how often are we going to be in [name of city]? We're here now, so we might as well experience everything that's here!! The food, the music, the games, the people... You can't find that anywhere but here." (Kalim)
"I get the importance of preparation, but I'm kind of curious about the celebration that's going on. If Rosehearts-senpai wants to study, then he should do that. I'd feel bad exploring the city without him, though... He might miss out." (Deuce)
"Shouldn't you at least grab some grub first? I'm pretty hungry too! Let's check out the food stalls!" (Grim, maybe Yuu can also get a dialogue option)
At some point, the group decides to browse and buy souvenirs. They discuss who they are shopping for and come upon the subject of family. Kalim and Jack want to buy stuff for their siblings and Deuce thinks his mom might appreciate a locally made handkerchief with the kingdom's sun emblem on it. (As a trucker, Dylla often drives for long hours so she might find use in a handkerchief to wipe her forehead.) Yuu and Grim can also bring up potentially getting something for the Ramshackle Ghosts, who are like their found family.
Riddle becomes visibly uncomfortable when the topic of family is brought up. Everyone else sounds so happy talking about theirs, but he has no idea what a happy family is supposed to be like. Deuce (and maybe Yuu + Grim too) realizes why Riddle is uncomfortable and quickly apologize. Kalim and Jack, who aren't familiar with Riddle's background or his attempts to speak with his mother over winter break, are a little confused but the others feel it's not their place to explain why and Riddle doesn't know them well enough to elaborate on personal matters. (Here, Jack and Kalim serve as an in-universe reason to keep his family history vague so as to not spoil people who haven't gotten that far in the main story yet, but the awkwardness is palpable enough to imply something is wrong to serve the narrative of the event story.)
Now, "hometown" events tend to introduce a new character, typically a family member, to us. However, the new characters are not those who appear as the "trauma source" for the respective OB boy. (For example, Falena was not the character introduced to us in Tamashina Mina/Cloudcalling on the Savanna and we met Kifaji instead.) Following this trend, we will not be encountering Mrs. Rosehearts but rather MR. Rosehearts.
I realize that we don't have a ton of lore about Riddle's dad yet so everything I write about his personality is completely headcanon (primarily based on the personality of the King of Hearts). The only things that are canon in this depiction is that 1) Mr. Rosehearts is a medical mage like his wife is and 2) Mr. Rosehearts does not have a happy marriage with his wife.
Anyway, we run into Mr. Rosehearts out in the city. Turns out that he is one of the presenters at the conference and he was supposed to meet and receive Riddle. He's a quiet and slightly anxious man but overall is kind to his son (though we should get the impression that Mr. Rosehearts isn't good with confrontation and folds easily).
Maybe have a part where Mr. Rosehearts is surprised that Riddle has friends because uh... the last time he recalls his son having friends, it was because his wife ranted at them for 5 hours and banned them from their home. But hey, he's chill about it and promises Riddle this can stay between them and he won't tell his mom. Could insert a line or two that implies that the winter break talk didn't go over well. (This is just my headcanon, but you could also stick in a line that insinuates that the Rosehearts parents don't just outright divorce because Riddle's mom can't deal with the potential social fallout + realizing that she is "wrong" in her marriage.)
Every "hometown" event thus far has presented us with some kind of minor external conflict to be resolved. In this case, Riddle's conflict is more internal. He's wrestling with what he wants to do with his future and trying to cope with the reality that his mother isn't the loving, "always correct" woman he thought she was. This, of course, mirrors Rapunzel's struggle with Mother Gothel, who tries to keep her in the tower and doing as she commands.
We finally make our way to our quarters for the night (Riddle has his own room; everyone else has to share one), perhaps in tall tower to mimic Rapunzel's home with Gothel. Riddle knows he should retire early because the conference is first thing tomorrow, but he admits to everyone that after spending time in the city, he has become curious about the tradition of releasing thousands of wish lanterns into the night sky. It happens pretty late in the day though, so he brushes it off and says they should sleep.
... But the others get really hype about Riddle "finally getting into the spirit of the holiday" and decide they should see the lanterns!! The only problem is, Riddle is locked in his hotel room for the night. There could be a local superstition, tradition, or security reason for this. Like maybe due to the story of the Princess in the Tower (and Gothel locking her up), people who are indoors at a certain time of night can't leave until the next day?? Or maybe Mrs. Rosehearts had prepared Riddle's room for him in advance and instructed staff to ensure he doesn't leave because she has been paranoid about him "breaking the rules" again after the tart incident. I don't know, pick your reason.
YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS??? It's time for Jack, Deuce, Kalim, Grim, and Yuu to be Riddle's Flynn Rider + animal companions to break Riddle out. Our group represents the freedom and childhood wonders Riddle missed out on, the antithesis to Mrs. Rosehearts'/Mother Gothel's control. I can see Riddle using his long hair to hoist himself down, Jack using his UM to help everyone race to the water in time to catch the lanterns, Deuce being the muscle if they run into any thugs, Kalim using his social skills to quickly befriend the locals and ask for directions to the best vantage point or using his $$$ to rent the group a rowboat, etc.
We can keep the rhythmic/twistune from the original version of this event where Kalim, Deuce, and Jack were able to safely descend using Riddle’s hair but Riddle hesitates before he’s able to get himself to follow. The reason is the same; he worries about breaking the rules and how his mother would disapprove of him leaving the home. Riddle wonders if the Princess in the Tower felt the same, but ultimately his friends convince him it’s fine (by baiting him with the rules). He will be trapped in this tower forever if he doesn’t summon his strength and take the leap. If not now, then when? When will my life begin? “There are people waiting for me outside, so… it must be okay for me to leave. Right… Mother?”
Riddle keeps nagging everyone about how many rules and social norms they're breaking, but eventually he loosens up and even laughs a little at some of the dumb things they do. We can maybe have him thinking, This is just like… and then flashback to his childhood days with Trey and Chenya.
They're out on the waters just in time to see the lanterns being released. Alternatively, the even runners could be having trouble lighting up all the lanterns or something so Riddle has the opportunity to help with that (this way, we’d still get the other rhythmic/twistune featured in the original event). That particular rhythmic/twistune ends on Riddle with five lanterns floating overhead, which I think could be important symbolism (five lanterns -> five mentions of Heartslabyul).
It's beautiful. Everyone oohs and aahs at the sight--most of all, Riddle. He can say something like... "This city is known for its many contributions to magic medicine. I know that, and yet... I don't believe any magic or medicine could replicate what I am feeling in this very moment." There is some part of Riddle that acknowledges the healing and therapeutic properties of just... being allowed to have freedom, of allowing himself to live in the present and not stress about the rules or gearing up for a future someone else has decided for him all the time. He just doesn't know how to fully verbalize it + has not fully come to terms with it yet, so this is how he expresses it. At last, he sees the light.
While the new location they travel to + the conference provide us with the backdrop of medicine and health for this rewrite, I think there’s also something to be implied about the injuries we don’t see, the pain inflicted that isn’t physical. Both Riddle and Rapunzel were trapped in towers but were also emotionally controlled and prevented from leaving/made scared or the world and disobeying their mothers. When Riddle sees the lanterns, it’s sort of a “wake up” sign to his soul, a reminder of how healing it can be to just… live by one’s own terms, to not be ruled over by fear of disappointing someone else or failing to meet expectations. Rapunzel and Riddle bear scars on their heart from having been raised in the households that they were, and it is seeing the lanterns in-person that helps to “heal” what hurts them.
Riddle recalls the story of the Princess in the Tower and how she made a wish to see the lanterns, so now people make wishes upon these lanterns before releasing them into the sky. He lets go of his own lantern and wishes that, someday, he can be like the Princess in the Tower and this lantern floating up to the sky… and follow his own Road to Freedom.
Everyone sneaks back into their rooms and rest for the day. Uhhh, and there can be a scene of slicing off their hair for tomorrow. Riddle can talk about how the Princess grew her hair long because her mother told her to, but that it must have been cumbersome to walk like this. This way, by cutting off the hair like how the Princess does at the end of her story, it's a liberating act.
It doesn't matter what happens at the conference because what was important was the experiences Riddle had with his friends leading up to it. At most, maybe we see Mr. Rosehearts again while heading to the venue and they have a brief exchange where Riddle lets it slip he's a little tired. "That's so unlike you," Mr. Rosehearts remarks. "Well," Riddle replies with a small smile, "I am a growing young man, after all. I am changing every day."
I want to be clear that this does NOT mean Riddle has had a full character arc to come to terms with how he was raised. He would NOT feel 100% okay with rebelling against his mother by the end of this (hypothetical) event. The point of my version of Wish Lantern isn't to empower Riddle to fistfight Mrs. Rosehearts or to tell her off. The point is that it's supposed to be a small step in helping Riddle through the very complicated process of recognizing he was traumatized and/or abused, accepting that reality, and learning about how he can grow from it and his abuser (who is someone he thought he loved and could trust). This can take YEARS to process in the real world, and it would probably be similar to Riddle. Again, this is meant to be a SINGLE STEP he takes, NOT THE ENTIRE JOURNEY.
So in my rewrite, the event would be split up like this:
Episode 1: invitation to the event; gathering all the relevant characters, hopping through the mirror
Episode 2: arrival in the new location and having fun in the area
Episode 3: souvenir shopping, meeting Riddle's dad
Episode 4: retiring to room, changing mind and deciding to break out instead
Episode 5: seeing the lights, ending
As you can see, the structure is very similar to a traditional "hometown" event. I didn't want to stray too far from Twst's usual writing conventions, as it could mess with the cohesion with the rest of its story events. I did, however, try to change things up a little (like having an internal conflict instead of an external one) and tied in this (hypothetical) story with Riddle's overarching character development, as those are elements that I personally prefer in a story. I realize that the biggest change here is tying my rewrite much more strongly to the main story than similar events have 💦 BUT LET ME HAVE THIS, I think I cooked 😭
... What Wish Lantern could have been OTL Don’t get me wrong, though!! The version we did get wasn’t all bad. There was lore about the NRC library, lots of involvement from the staff, and fun character interactions with the whole student cast. I just feel like those could have all been used for a different event and not the Tangled one which could have been so much more interesting for Riddle and his character.

i genuinely think that the shift from the old marauders to the new one where every straight ship even the canon and most important one (i.e jily) and that whole jegulus/all the other made up ships that make no sense come from a place of fetish. yall LOVE to turn characters into little stereotypes and that whole constant obsession w homosexuality is not helping any cause. most of view view homosexual/queer relationships as more angsty or interesting in a way that’s so strange to me. ships could follow the most standard plot line but still be considered angsty cus they’re queer and why is that? this fandom has taken such a strange turn.
you are making sexuality such a strong and central point in a character importance more than any other trait of their character. and those head canons just end up erasing the most important things about these characters
james potter was a strong and good man. he developed from his arrogant teenage self into a good man fighting for a good cause. but now you made him into a twink that is in love with a death eater/ a member of the family that abused his best friend all his life. james and sirius’s relationship was a central point of their characters. and james’s love for lily is a central point as well??????
sirius being turned into a overly feminine gay drama queen, even though what WAS important about him was his loyalty his strength and his honor??? but all of that was forgotten. HE CAN BE GAY WITHOUT ERASING HIS ORIGINAL PERSONALITY. stop painting him into a stereotype of a gay man.
regulus black is getting the recognition that is to be given to sirius. his character was not some brave rebel vigilante that fought for justice. he was a pureblood supremacist.he was a deatheater. yes he is important to the story but he was not what you made him.
lily evans is the most important character of the series. she’s the reason it exists. her and james’s love is the center point. but it was pushed away by you people to focus on your strange fetishized view of gay men. this MAJOR character whose love for her son and husband literally MADE the story got cast away as a secondary character.
important topics like sirius’sabusive family, lily and james’s courage and love….was remplaced by ridiculized view of characters
make characters gay cus we don’t know anything about them yes okay that’s why wolf star was a major part of the fandom. but the complete shift of every single characters identity is just bullshit.

Aoyama's Let's Talk Day 2025 Translation [Unofficial Sources]
EDIT: [2025-02-01]
The official transcript has been released. Please refer to my translation of it here instead.
Yesterday was Aoyama’s yearly Let’s Talk Day, a day when a lucky few audience members chosen by lottery have the chance to ask him questions. While the Q&A hasn’t yet been officially released, I’ve translated tweets about the questions asked. I can’t guarantee that they’re 100% trustworthy, but generally most questions were posted by multiple unrelated users.
In cases where different users reported slightly different answers for the same question, I consolidated them to the best of my ability. All source tweets at the end. Without further ado:
Q. When Gin travels to other countries, does he stay at hotels, or does he have safe houses? I want to know whether he uses hotel-provided amenities like bathrobes.
A. He sleeps in his car or stays at Organization-provided lodging- the Organization has apartments all over the place. He does also stay at hotels. The FBI still hasn’t discovered them. He does wear bathrobes! He has long hair so I imagine it’s tough to wash.
Q. What sports does the England-born Akai play aside from Jeet Kune Do?
A. He learnt Jeet Kune Do from his father, so has no interest in sports other than that. But I think he might be good at cricket since he’s English. Maybe baseball in America.
Q. Does Hiro have any experience with martial arts?
A. He learnt some at the police academy. He has no other experience, but he’s decently strong- weaker than Kyogoku though.
Q. As you were a guest on Kōhaku Uta Gassen [T/N: A music show that traditionally airs around New Year’s in Japan] this year, do you have plans to write a case based around it?
A. I doubt NHK would let me (haha) I did think a music show case might be fun, but they’d probably still bother me about it.
[Questioner: What if you changed the name? Like, a West vs. East tournament.]
I’ll think about it.
Q. Will the Kuroba family and Kudo family meet each other in the future?
A. Is that something you want to see? I’ll think about it.
Q. What will Momiji do now that Heiji and Kazuha are dating?
A. I don’t think Momiji will give up? She’ll do her best.
Q. How can you think up so many different characters?
A. I don’t know (haha) Maybe because I’ve seen lots of different manga, dramas, and movies.
[Questioner: So they just pop up in your mind.]
Something like that.
Q. Do you plan to write a story where Chihaya and Furuya meet?
A. Ah, so Chihayafuru, you mean (haha) It sounds interesting, so I’ll think about it.
Q. What can you tell us about this year’s movie at this point?
A. When I told Rikiya Koyama [T/N: Mouri’s VA] that Kogoro is the main character this year, he told me he was nervous. Once he was done, Takayama-san [T/N: Conan’s VA] told him he sounded cool.
Q. What’s the best part of this year’s movie?
A. I can’t say, but I think you’ll be shocked.
Q. What’s your favourite case so far?
A. Ran GIRL & Shinichi BOY. I love it.
Q. How did Kogoro manage to become a detective without deductive abilities?
A. He doesn’t have deductive abilities, but he’s good at shooting and judo. And he has Conan around. Everything works out.
Q. Was Nakamori Aoko born in September?
A. When is good?
[Questioner: Since Kaito was born on the 21st, maybe the 12th?]
I’ll think about it. I haven’t decided, but since Kaito’s birthday is June 21st (6/21), maybe September 12th (9/12) makes sense.
Q. What kind of things does Ran talk about with her karate club friends?
A. What would you like?
[Questioner: Romance talk!]
I do think they chat about that. Everyone would be interested to hear about how things are going with Shinichi. If a scene like that ever comes to mind, I’ll think about including it.
Q. What is Furuya’s family situation like?
A. Secret, as I haven’t decided for certain just yet- it might still change.
Q. Will you ever draw the moment Kazuha fell for Heiji?
A. Do you want to see it? I might.
Q. At Abeno Harukas, Heiji confessed and was holding hands with Kazuha, but did Heiji initiate the hand-holding?
A. Yes. I don’t know if I’ll ever draw that though.
Q. At Kōhaku Uta Gassen, were there any artists you enjoyed other than aiko, B’Z, and Fukuyama-san?
A. Ah, I can’t think of anyone but them. But they were all good. B’z was amazing. It was all dark in the audience seating, but when I thought “oh, something is moving,” it was truly amazing by the end. B’z is my choice! (haha)
Q. Do you have any plans for a spinoff featuring Hattori?
A. Like Zero’s Tea Time?
[Questioner: More like Hanzawa-san.]
What’s the difference between Zero’s Tea Time and Hanzawa-san? Did you want a spinoff? There’s no plans for one right now.
Q. Are there any characters you plan to have romantic developments for in the near future?
A. Kansuke and Yui, and Juugo and Chihaya… aside from that [glances at the moderator] that character… if I say who it is, we’ll get flamed online, so… (haha)
[The audience goes abuzz]
Well, yes. I can’t tell you right now (haha). Let’s leave it at that.
Q. What’s the plan for next year’s movie?
A. I can’t say, but they do already have it planned.
Q. Who will be the star of next year’s movie?
A. I can’t say, but it’s already been decided as well as the stage.
Q. I’m from Hokkaido. Do you have plans to draw any famous tourist spots in Sapporo?
A. Hakodate was recently the stage, so it would need to be some time in the future. Any recommendations?
[Questioner: Suzukake Park, Oodori Park, Sapporo TV Tower.]
Ah, got it, I’ll think about it.
Q. We know that Azusa has worked at Poirot for at least one year, but how long has she worked there in total?
A. I don’t know. Maybe since she was in high school. Oops, I just said whatever.
Q. Any plans for a movie set in Tottori?
A. Not at this time. I’ll think about it. I did try to incorporate the Tottori dialect once, but I was told it was incomprehensible. Tottori dialect is pretty hard. If we do a movie here, I’d like it to use Tottori dialect.
Q. It seems Momiji won’t give up even now that Heiji and Kazuha have gotten together, but will Iori continue to serve Momiji in the same way? Will he ever leave due to his old work?
A. He’ll be by her side forever. I think he’ll protect her until the day he dies.
Q. What would you want to eat at a Conan café?
A. Naporitan spaghetti. I have childish tastebuds, so I also like Hamburg steak and hamburgers.
Q. I like aiko, so I want to hear the behind-the-scenes details about your talk with her on Kōhaku Uta Gassen.
A. During our preparatory meeting, I asked whether I should say “Funya!”, but I was told I couldn’t (because it’s from a different agency.) [T/N: Not familiar with this myself, but maybe it’s some idol’s catchphrase or a reference to a show.]
[Questioner: After meeting aiko, did any murder case ideas come to mind?]
No (haha) It would be sad to kill her off. Maybe a case with a singer involved… I’ll think about it. Aiko was cute.
Q. Kurayoshi’s phone number area code is an important plot point in Conan, but will the city be involved in the future?
A. A coincidence. Kurayoshi residents will get mad at me otherwise.
Q. What did you do for New Year’s as a child?
A. Usually my family would ask me to visit a shrine with them, but I’d stay at home since it was too much of a pain. These days, I always go for my health. [T/N: In Japan, it’s tradition to visit a shrine on the first day of the new year.]
Q. What’s Inspector Ayanokouji’s personal life like? What are his hobbies?
A. He feeds Maro-chan. Hobbies… I wonder. He does like Maro-chan. What would you like?
[Questioner: Something like archery.]
Archery? Well, I’ll think about it.
Q. Do you have any plans for a triple date with Heiji-Kazuha, Shinichi-Ran, and Kyougoku-Sonoko?
A. I hadn’t thought of that before, but I’ll think about it.
[Questioner: So you don’t plan to think about it.]
Sorry (haha).
Q. Any information on Akai and Amuro’s chat nine hours later?
A. I can’t say. It’s a truly mysterious tea party (haha)
Q. In your Professional interview, you were eating curry, but is there any other food or snacks you like to eat while working?
A. I only really eat cheap stuff, so (haha) I’m really into the beef don mini-pack from Yoshinoya- it’s a pretty small portion. It’s healthy and good. Also, curry from Coco.
Q. The Saitama prefecture is right next to Tokyo, but has never made an appearance. Any plans for Saitama prefecture police to appear?
A. Yokomizo did show up in Saitama at first, but he did move to Shizuoka, so (haha) I tried to have him go back, but I was told that then it just seemed like he never moved at all. I’ll write about Saitama eventually. I’ll think about it.
Q. What does Kazuha like aside from aikido?
A. She likes Heiji… (haha) I think she likes cooking just like others like her would. Do you have any thoughts on what she might like?
[Questioner: What…]
[Moderator: Well, that’s what they wanted to know in the first place.]
I’ll think about it.
Q. I’m from Taiwan. Conan has only ever gone to England in the manga. Will he ever go to another country in the manga, not the movies?
A. It would be tough while he’s still Conan, as he doesn’t have a passport. His only choice is for Kid to stuff him into a suitcase, but I can’t use the same trick twice (haha) I’d like to go to Taiwan one day.
Q. Akai and Amuro infiltrated the Organization and know about Sherry, but don’t know of the existence of APTX4869?
A. They do not. There’s a reason why the details of her research and her family isn’t well-known in the Organization, but that’s secret. Even parents wouldn’t tell their children about it in the Organization.
Q. Do you plan to introduce any new Organization operatives?
A. What would you like?
[Questioner: Amaretto!]
I'll think about it.
Q. Do you plan to draw Shinichi and KID facing off?
A. Shinichi. You mean big Shinichi, huh? I’d love to. (haha)
Q. What last name do you like, or would like to have?
A. Kudo! (haha) Since Kudo Yuusaku as portrayed by Matsuda Yuusaku was cool. If I can, I’d love to become one! (haha)
Q. Did you decide that Heiji would confess on a tall Osaka building even before the Abeno Harukas tower was completed? [T/N: It opened in 2014]
A. I decided after the Abeno Harukas tower was completed. But I did know from the start that Kazuha’s mother would make an appearance to include a twist.I wanted everyone to think that he’d confess to her mother by mistake.
Q. Who’s stronger between Kogoro and Ran?
A. That’s quite the question (haha) Kogoro is strong! But, Ran is catastrophically strong too (haha). I think it’s hard to say? But if they fought against each other, he’d probably hold back against Ran. Since he’s her dad.
Q. You can really feel the cultural differences between Kyushu and Tokyo. Do you plan to write a case based on that?
A. I’d like to.
Q. Do you have any special tidbits for us aside from what you’ve already told us?
A. Kansuke and Yui and Koumei’s childhood will appear in the movie. Take a good look at the illustration I drew for the Conan Tanteisha store as well.
Q. Anything you’d want to incorporate into Tottori’s Mystery Tour? Tourist spots and restaurants you’d recommend?
A. I’d like them to make use of Tottori’s Odaiba, crabs, and apple-pears.
Q. Who’s the tallest among all your characters?
A. Date and Gin! Kyougoku is a little shorter, but those three are the tallest. Kazami is too tall in the anime. He should be the same height as Furuya. [T/N: One source also claimed he said that Gin is taller than Date.]
Q. Will Miyano Shiho and Kudo Shinichi ever star in the same case?
A. Ah, I can’t tell you that. Whoops, I almost let something slip (haha)

Alrighty it is almost the end of the year so, in no particular order, here are podcasts I recommend of the ones I've listened to this year! (let me tell you picking favourites for this was So hard) (Unfortunately I can't just do all of them because there are almost 50)
Hello From The Hallowoods: The world ended, but we're still here, and shit's weird. (Has made me cry; even the trees are queer; my comfort show<3)
Camp Here And There: Good morning campers! The time is 7:63AM and Cabin Magpie Moth has spontaneously combusted! Whichever one of you little woodworms can put it out first can come get a puffy sticker from me in the Nurses Cabin! (Is it a horror? Is it a comedy? I don't know, you'd have to check to be sure)
Wooden Overcoats: Funn Funerals used to be the only funeral parlor on the island. It isn't anymore. (Sitcom, the main characters are the most miserable wet cats you ever did see)
Re: Dracula: Maybe this year, they'll be okay. Maybe this year they'll all live. Maybe this year he won't go, and she'll be alright.
Magnus Protocol: TMA's louder, bolder, less serious younger sibling.
The Silt Verses: Oh boy. Let me tell you, you will look at crabs differently after this. (WET horror, genuinely the best pod I've ever heard)
Archive 81: Dan, a newly hired archivist, has to listen to and catalogue a set of old audio tapes. The tapes contain interviews conducted by someone Dan has never heard of. Dan is in an isolated bunker in the middle of the woods. Surely nothing will happen to our dear friend Dan. (What is it with archivists and getting snatched by The Horrors? Ignore the tv show it doesn't exist)
Red Valley: Just a couple of guys with an interest in research station Red Valley, whose focus was cryonics. It's completely defunct now. I wonder what happened. (Ethics? What's that?)
Woe.Begone: Some say it's about time-travel, some say it's about keeping yourself and those close to you alive, some say it's about online safety. All can agree on one point: What the fuck why are there cowboys now
Midnight Burger: Midnight Burger is a time-travelling, dimension-spanning diner. Dunno how it works or where it's going next. We open at six! (The episodes are an hour long minimum but it's worth it. Comedy sci-fi, lighthearted fun :)
Old Gods of Appalachia: The Appalachians are spooky y'all. (The narrator's voice is so comforting in this, it feels like campfire stories)
Dreamboy: Went into this pod being told it was made by the people who made WTNV and absolutely no other information. Let me tell you I did not expect the main character to tell us that he got a hard-on in the first episode. (The most sexually explicit pod I've listened to)
The White Vault: Nice little trip to Svalbard to check on the remote research station, surely nothing will go wrong :) (Holy Fucking Shit What Is That) (Recommend 1st season especially to The Thing (1982) enjoyers)
Camlann: Ever wished that you were apart of Welsh folklore or Arthurian legends? Or perhaps some of the last people left on Earth? No? Ah well, you'll pick it up soon enough. (Three idiots and a dog in Wales, fighting for their lives)
Breaker Whiskey: Imagine. Being the only person on earth. Just you. Just you, and someone on the radio. Just you, the radio, and a woman you absolutely do NOT have sexual tension with. (This one looks really long because it has 260+ episodes, but they're like 4 minutes long each so it's not really)
Ethics Town: Don't worry about it. (Cannot recommend enough, it is a mindfuck)
Tell No Tales: What if ghosts were a thing that could infest a place, like rats or roaches or mold? What if it was your job to exterminate them? And the million-pound question, do ghosts deserve rights? (I am waiting so so patiently for the rest of s2)
Remnants: You wake up in a place you recognise. You have always been there. You have no idea where you are. You see a stranger's life. You recognise them. You knew them once, you think. Discard or reshelve? You don't know what that means. It does not matter. Discard or reshelve, that is the question. (I am going insane over this pod)
Not Quite Dead: Vampires! Alfie is an overworked A&E nurse who does not have time for this shit. Unfortunately, he does not have a choice in this matter. (A really interesting take on vampirism, going into the biology. It is fascinating, and an exciting story)
Travelling Light: Space Quaker! Listen to the Traveller tell you about every new planet and civilisation they visit. Whattttt noooo they don't have a crush on one of their crew members what are you taaaalking abouttttt (Very comforting pod, beauty in the mundane in a way? But not mundane because yk. Aliens)
Someone Just Like You: Brilliant horror, just really well written. I don't even have words for it. So far there are only 6 episodes and the concepts/plots of each seem cheesy, but my GOD the execution.
The Bright Sessions: People with powers get therapy! Thank God, they need it so bad. (I love one particular antagonist so much, I need to put him in a microwave)
Poe: Evermore: It wasn't until I started this that I realised that Edgar Allen Poe would have had a Boston-ish accent. Reallyyy interesting story of his life, and I keep getting jumpscared by VAs I recognise. Faulkner Silt Verses what are you doing here.
Witherburn After School News: Your school radio host getting WAY more involved in the news than they should. Really hope they're still breathing. Love the folklore section though!
Before The Tone: Voicemails from someone who just got a job they probably shouldn't have. (Brilliant idea for the format, and great execution)
I Am In Eskew: What if you were trapped? What if you had a home, a wife and a child? What if they aren't real? Are you sure? Go and check. What if your city tried to kill you? What if it loved you very much, more than anyone else? (Horror but the narrator is the saddest wettest man you've ever heard)
Sherlock & Co: Modern day Sherlock Holmes, and John Watson is a true crime podcaster. Dear God I did not think it would be as compelling as it is.
#only going to tag a few from these because there are still 27 on this list and I don't want to clog up too many tags#hfth#remnants pod#ethics town#woe.begone#audio drama#fiction podcasts

Because all of two people said they wanted to read my newest story obsession, here's a sneak peek at my favorite chapter I've written . . .
Let me introduce you to:
The Game Itself
A Chishiya x childhood best friend reader (Niragi's sister!) fic
Content Warning: Mentions of an abusive father, mentions of reader trending toward a panic attack, canon-typical violence, curse words, Niragi is in here and is a menace
A/N: This chapter takes place well into the story, having already introduced many of the main characters and some important plot points. None of my own twists are spoiled by reading this chapter first, and I think it's the best representation for how this story will be 😘 I hope you love it 💕
You lean back with a sigh, relaxing into the plastic beach chair set in front of the glittering pool packed with bodies. The sun is high in the sky, and the citizens of The Beach are happily drinking it in. That's not the only thing they're drinking in, mind you - it's mid-afternoon, and the party is absolutely raging. The music is bumping, the drinks are flowing, and the people are doing what people at The Beach do best - celebrating life. It may seem macabre, to party the days away when you're forced to face deadly games by night, but honestly it feels kind of right when you aren't really sure how much longer you have left to live.
Chishiya sits at your feet, one arm draped lazily over your bare calves and the other holding him upright on the chair. As usual, his face is devoid of any emotion, but you know he is enjoying the opportunity to people watch and get some sun. Even he isn't a vampire, after all.
You spend a few moments studying the people yourself - many splashing around drunkenly in the refreshing pool water and others dancing uninhibited around its edges, everyone looking free as can be. How must it feel to not have to worry about anyone in the Borderlands but yourself? How easy it must be to not have the two most important people in your life stuck here with you, wondering if today is the day they're going to die.
You feel the familiar tight feeling in your chest start to build, and force yourself to shake away those suffocating thoughts - you simply cannot afford to panic here.
You turn your attention instead to playing with the beads adorning the straps of your emerald green crochet bikini. The suit was new, wearing it outside of your room for the first time today. It was special to you - Kuina had found it while she was out for a game last week, saying it had reminded her of your sparkling eyes. The gift made you feel loved, and the suit made you feel sexy.
Rolling the wooden beads between your fingers seemed to help settle your nerves. When your breathing finally returned to normal and the simple anxious task was no longer needed, you sigh loudly, covering your face with your arms and flopping further back into the chair. Bored.
Chishiya smirks, raising an eyebrow. The man very nearly laughs at the dramatic habit that was very you. "Bored already, hm?" He hums, "Coming down here was your idea after all."
"Yes, but I thought there would be more excitement" you whined, flailing your arms widely to accentuate your point. Chishiya sweeps his eyes over your form, looking at you with amusement.
He's about to say something more when he's interrupted by the arrival of two familiar figures - a nervous looking guy with shaggy black hair, and a fit, muscular girl with a cute bob cut. Chishiya squeezes your calf to get your attention, flicking his eyes toward them as they sit down apprehensively on two beach chairs across the pool from you. It was the two newcomers from the most recent executive meeting, and before that, your 5 of Spades game. Arisu and Usagi.
"So they decided to stay after all," you muse, sitting up in interest and folding your legs underneath you. You scoot your body closer to your friend, your thigh brushing against his, as you continue to observe the couple. You briefly wonder what had happened to his blonde friend, and the one they'd been trying to get medical help for. In a place like this, it's probably best not to ask.
The blonde turns his head to study your face, brushing a piece of hair behind your ear as he does, "I can't imagine that it would have gone over well had they declined Hatter's offer." You feel a slight shiver run down your spine at Chishiya's intimate touch. That's new, you note. He had brushed your hair behind your ear like that many times in your life, and only now does it take your breath away. You hum distractedly, still staring at the pair but suddenly feeling very far away from the events taking place around you.
You grin brightly, then, having noticed Kuina skipping over to them. She plops, likely uninvited, down on the chair beside Arisu, her unlit cigarette hanging characteristically in her mouth. There is no doubt in your mind that she was already teasing them about the relationship between them, despite having just introduced herself.
Kuina was confident like that, and you loved that about her. Well, except for when she was teasing you and Chishiya. You blushed slightly just thinking about it, wondering when you had started becoming so flustered about your best friend. You duck your head at these thoughts and pretend to study the sparkly manicure Kuina had given you last night.
You and Chishiya were still just best friends, right?
Within a minute or two, the air had turned from relaxed to tense, and your neck snapped up to find out why. Your discerning eyes land on the militants, of course, you really should have guessed. The hostile and generally power hungry group of The Beach's "personal protection unit" were filing into the party, sure to flash their weapons at anyone looking. The smart people were avoiding their gaze entirely, and the stupid (drunk?) people were openly gawking. You rolled your eyes, how typical.
Leading the charge onto the pool deck was Aguni, looking cold and calculating as usual, with your brother following close behind. Your eyes narrowed, having not seen him for a few days.
"Looks like you're about to get your excitement after all," Chishiya whispered, his breath tickling your ear. You took in a sharp breath in anticipation; the full militant corp was standing at arms looking ready to fight, at the pool. Could this mean the fall of The Beach could be coming sooner than you previously expected? Anxiety swirled heavily in your stomach, fingers subconsciously finding the wooden beads again.
You look to Niragi, the one person who would normally soothe your frayed nerves with just a glance, but feel even worse seeing the wild look in his darkened eyes. Had your relationship truly deteriorated so much in a matter of weeks?
Being all the way on the other side of the pool from them, you're unable to hear Aguni's request, but Niragi was quick to obey. He moved towards Usagi, pulling her roughly up to her feet.
You watch with widened eyes - had Aguni asked for Usagi? What would he even want her for? Nothing good, certainly. Maybe you overestimated his kindness and empathy the day he saved you in the 9 of Hearts game. Or maybe this place really does create monsters out of men - you could certainly see that in the long-haired man across the pool from you, once soft and caring, now swinging a gun around without a care in the world and physically threatening a girl not much older than you. Hell, you see it even in yourself, having been happy enough to let everyone but Chishiya die from the second you landed in this wretched place and started playing.
You're shaken from your reverie when Arisu springs up from his place beside Kuina to help Usagi. You groan in despair, knowing full well that your brother would only be further provoked; Borderlands-version Niragi has an extremely short fuse. Kuina also looks displeased, as though she'd literally just told them not to mess with them, which she probably had.
The people of the party are now definitely watching, but openly pretending not to be. If you didn't feel so anxious at the situation, you'd probably laugh at how nosy and indiscretion drunk people truly are.
You find yourself standing instead, ready to close the distance between your perch and where Niragi has now thrown Arisu to the ground, kicking him repeatedly in the stomach. You felt like throwing up watching the display. Memories flooded your mind of watching your father do the exact same thing to the tall man who was now delivering the blows. It was taking everything in you to not curl up in a ball crying like you always had when the two men in your family were fighting. No, this time you had to put an end to it. This time you would be brave and fight.
"You're going to try to save them, aren't you?" Chishiya mumbles in concern, knowing this scene was likely triggering to you. You knew he wanted you to stay out of it, but you just couldn't help yourself.
"I can't sit back and play victim anymore, Shiya," you whisper. You move swiftly around the pool, before you could lose your nerve or Chishiya could stop you.
"Niragi, please. They're my friends," you plead with the violent man, grabbing onto his forearm as he delivers another crushing blow to Arisu's ribcage. The people of The Beach were now actively watching the scene, fully invested in your family drama. You're unsure of why you called the couple your friends, when you just barely know their names. All you know is that you don't want to watch your brother kill the poor guy, and you definitely don't want to find out what Aguni had planned for Usagi. Or was it that you couldn't stand to see your sweet brother hurt someone the same way he had been hurt so many times in his life?
Niragi ceases his assault on the boy and rips his arm from your grasp. He gives you a full once over in the process, his cold eyes meeting yours for the first time in days. You feel real, raw fear filling your system, something you haven't felt since leaving your father's house for the last time 8 years ago. You'd never felt smaller in your life than you did now, shrinking under Niragi's brutal gaze.
Taking a shaky breath, you muster the shiniest, prettiest puppy dog eyes you can, peering up at Niragi through long eyelashes. "You won't hurt them, right? I'm friends with them."
Niragi continues glaring intimidatingly down at you, in what you realize is disgust. He doesn't address your concerns, but instead has something else to say.
"Put some fucking clothes on, you look like a slut" he spits fiercely, his pierced face now just centimeters from yours. The tight feeling in your chest had returned in full force, threatening to suffocate you.
You stumbled back as if he'd struck you - Niragi had never spoken to you like that. Your stomach dropped, and it took all of your willpower to maintain your composure. You obviously couldn't cry in front of all these Beach idiots, gaping at the two of you like you were the best soap opera in the Borderlands. You turn your head to escape his intense gaze, and put your tongue in your cheek to keep the tears from spilling over. You want soap opera? I'll give you soap opera.
Looking back up at your brother, you cross your arms over your chest. "What are you going to do, make me?" you implore him brattily. Niragi seethed, pierced eyebrow arching, looking like he was seriously considering slapping the attitude right out of you. You stand your ground, the way you should have every other time you've faced a monster like this.
As you and Niragi stare each other down, the initial cause for your dispute long forgotten, Aguni and the others have become distracted by Hatter's arrival. One side demanding peace, and the release of the newest members of the beach; the other begging silently for chaos to ensue. The tense atmosphere surrounding you indicates the balance of power between the two leaders was indeed in jeopardy.
After what feels like hours of strained silence, Aguni ultimately yields to Hatter. The Beach seems to collectively release their held breaths as Aguni and the militant corp flock away to another part of the resort. Usagi quickly tends to Arisu, leading him back into the building to treat his wounds and get to safety. Meanwhile, you have your own struggle for power going on.
Niragi still stands towering above you, obviously not in the mood for your games. He unbuttons his black and white collared shirt, draping it over your shoulders, "Go. Change. Not a request." His fingers wrap tightly around your forearm, aggressively yanking you towards the entrance to the hotel. The force that Niragi had exerted on you nearly sent you careening into the pool still glistening mockingly at your feet, but luckily Chishiya had appeared in just the right position to catch you. Unbeknownst to you, the two exchange a brief look before Niragi skulks off to find Aguni and his other lunatic friends.
The panic within you threatened once more to boil over and your brain simply shuts down - this day had been too fucking much. In your daze, you barely register Chishiya dragging you inside, away from the curious and scrutinizing glances of The Beach citizens. You were embarrassed, confused, and fucking mad.
Just as you passed through the swinging double doors and into the air-conditioned building, Kuina fell in step with you two. She let a reassuring hand fall on your shoulder, squeezing it for comfort. At her kind touch, you feel your carefully crafted resolve finally crumble to the floor. Chishiya knew immediately that you were done for, lifting you easily into his arms and allowing you to ground yourself in him. He carried you protectively the rest of the way to his room as your thoughts thundered around in your head like a wild storm.
You had been lying to yourself your whole life, Niragi had been lying to you your whole life. He promised that your family wasn't broken, that you weren't broken. You guessed it was too much to ask for you to remain untouched by your father's special brand of cruelty. That one day, you'd likely both become just like him.
And now Niragi had. He called you a slut, degrading an outfit that had made you feel beautiful. He embarrassed you in front of an audience. He grabbed you so hard you could see his fingerprints etched in your skin. He was just like him and this time you knew you wouldn't escape.
It was then that you knew - this game that you were playing was much more dangerous than you had initially realized.

OKAY so I got a little carried away 😅 Yes this was supposed to be a sneak peek, but believe it or not it's not even the entire chapter 🤭

July 15th Game Informer article on BioWare's companion design philosophy in DA:TV - cliff notes:
DA:TV wasn't made with the intention of making a sequel or 'the same again as DA:I'. They wanted to do something different
The companions are key to everything in DA:TV; the special centerpiece, load-bearing pillars. The studio uses the phrase "DA is about characters, not causes"
These are the most fully realized, complex, fleshed out & complicated companions from BioWare yet (and DA's best). They have stories of their own, and roles both in and out of combat. They are authentic and relatable
For the first time in the series, BioWare feels that they have purposefully and intentionally created great companions. In previous entries, they sort of 'stumbled' onto great companions
Rook goes on a journey with the companions, rather than how it felt in previous games where the companions are more like going on an adventure with the PC
The companions have complicated problems. We will explore how they think and feel, and help them through their problems. They participate in the game's dark parts and optimistic parts
Corinne: "They feel like my dear friends, and I absolutely adore them"
Corinne quote: "We've really moved into a place where you can have the highest of highs, and it can be colorful, it can be optimistic, but also, you can have the lowest of lows where it gets gritty, it gets painful, it gets quite dark. But throughout it all, there is a sense of optimism. And it creates this delightful throughline throughout the game."
When creating DA:TV one of BW's principles was that the world exists even when you/Rook isn't around, with ancient conflicts, grudges and more going on. Rook kind of comes in in the middle of some of these plots
John quote: "For example – the Grey Wardens are an interesting faction but by themselves, they don't tell a story, but there are characters within that faction that do. And the same thing with other characters in the story. They represent these factions, they show the face of the other parts of Thedas and of the storytelling we really want to do, which, again, shows Thedas as this large, diverse living world that has things going on when you're not there. [...] Where can Rook come into [the companions'] stories, and what interesting ways can those stories develop not just based on themselves but also based on Rook's presence within them?"
Companions are the faces of their factions. Some, like Bellara, are the faces for an entire area of the world
BW hopes that the companions' visual design challenges and excites cosplayers. Matt Rhodes: "The previous art director had the mindset we should make things easier for [cosplayers], which I think is a misunderstanding of cosplayers. We've seen the kind of challenges they're willing to take on, and so we've gone for, in some cases, a level of complexity and detail"
Tevinter is an oppressive, totalitarian regime that has slavery. "If you’re not a mage in Tevinter, you are lower than dirt for a lot of people". A damaging regime has taken over Minrathous
The Shadow Dragons are a rebel faction that fight back against this Tevinter mage-ocracy (so does Neve)
Neve believes that good exists in Tevinter. She's there for the common people, and believes in fighting oppression and tyranny. She represents the voice of the streets and the common people. BW "wanted to have a character that showed not just what is Tevinter at the top, but what is the average person who lives in Tevinter"
Detective Neve is also about finding clues and ways through problems that aren't as action-focused as some of the other companions
The writer Wesley of Game Informer thinks that DA:TV is sure to be "multiple dozens of hours long"
In combat, companions have their own autonomy and behaviors. They pick their own targets
As their plots progress, they learn how to use their abilities more competently in battle. "It feels like we're all in it together"
In battle, strategy, progression and a sense of teamwork comes into play as the party's leader, Rook. "It is a game about creating this organic sense of teamwork."
Vulnerabilities can be used synergistically
Bellara can slow time
Harding has devastating attacks with 'knock down' effects
Corinne quote: "Now, there are more explicit synergies as well. We very much have intentional combos where your companions can play off each other, you can queue up abilities between them, and each of those abilities will go off and have their effect. But it results in this massive detonation where you get enhanced effects, debuff the entire battlefield, all because of planning and teamwork. What makes it really cool is you can introduce Rook into that equation as well. One of my favorite things to do is upgrade some of Harding's abilities so she will automatically use some of these abilities that normally I'd have to instruct her to do. And she'll actually set my character up to execute that combo that, again, has that detonation effect."
Outside combat, companions have their own concerns, fears and distractions
Companions have their own personal spaces. They each have their own room in the Lighthouse. These sanctuaries become reflections of who they are. "The more time you spend with them, as the game develops as you work through their arc, their room and their personalities will evolve and flourish and become more complete as they trust you more and you understand them better."
The companions also develop romantically, sometimes with each other. Corinne: "There are moments in the game where two of our companions fell in love with each other and I had to make some pretty challenging choices as it related to the quest we're on. And it broke my heart, it absolutely did"
Get to know and learn about the companions in the Lighthouse. "It endears them to you in a way that I honestly haven't experienced before."
There are joy-filled moments and heart-breaking moments in the game wrt the companions

𝘣𝘢𝘨𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘵. 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢
jess mariano x reader
genre; fluff
word count; 896
summary; jess annotates a book for reader and then proceeds to rethink every decision he’s ever made.
reader pov
I had stopped by at Luke’s Diner to grab a coffee and have a small chat with Jess in the morning. He described a book he had recently read, saying it had been turned into a movie that disrespected the name.
“It’s so bad. Like, they changed multiple events and even one of the characters names. Don’t forget how everyone interacts with each other… it basically just shares the same name as the book is all.”
It was interesting seeing how frustrated he got about it, and I smiled at him.
“What book is this?”
His eyes widen a tad as he realizes he didn’t even say.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer. Lois Duncan.”
I nod, interested. I’d heard of the movie before, I think, in passing from my best friend. She and her mother watch a lot of things together, this might’ve been one she talked about.
“Did you like the book?”
I take a sip from my coffee, allowing the warmth of the drink to wake me up a bit more.
“Yeah, it was good. I annotated it as I read, if you want to borrow it.”
I smile at the offer, nodding along.
“I’d like that.”
And so here I sit, comfortably on my bed as I read the book. Jess’s annotations were always interesting. He didn’t only look at suspicious details in the story, he also had a soft spot for some of the romantic moments. It made me smile whenever I saw one, that goof.
The book was good, as he had said it was. I knew that Jess had written his full thoughts in the very back, so once I finished, I took everything in to form my opinions. I then open to the back to compare.
I didn’t expect a small folded paper to fall out. A little ‘huh’ escapes from my lips as I unfold it, reading it. I almost laugh at the simplicity of it. A note saying ‘Will you go on a date with me?’ with two boxes, one for yes and one for no. I snort in amusement, before placing it beside me to read his thoughts.
They were agreeable. It was well written and the. characters were developed. Barry was an asshole and Ray came off kinda creepy during some parts of the book.
Once I finish reading his thoughts, I turn my attention back to the note. I pick it up and walk to my desk, grabbing a pen. I checkmark the yes box and slide the note back into the book, knowing I’ll drop it off before dinner.
jess pov
What was I thinking.
Metallica pulses through the air as I stare at the ceiling. I’m lying on the floor as I collect my thoughts. I just asked out Y/n, and in probably the most stupid way possible.
What else can I do, I guess? And it’s too late anyways, they’re bound to have seen it by now.
Perhaps it isn’t the end of the world. If they say no, I’ll lose a close friend, but I’ll survive. Maybe I’ll be regretting who I am for a while, but I’ll survive.
The notes of Nothing Else Matters ring in my ears like a bell. I hum along faintly, occupying myself from my thoughts.
I pick myself up when there’s a knock on my bedroom door.
“Yes?”
Luke pops his head in, looking at me with tired eyes.
“C’mon. Dinner rush about to come in.”
And so I turn off my CD player and trudge down to the diner, ready to serve the rush. I head to the counter like my uncle asks me to and take peoples orders, scribbling in the notepad and dismissing them to a table. I hand the notepad to Luke to take to whoever’s cooking and repeat the process who knows how many times, when my attention is grabbed by a familiar face entering the diner.
Y/n approaches the counter with a friendly smile, brandishing my copy of I Know What You Did Last Summer. They place it on the counter, and I take it into my hands.
“Thoughts?”
I watch them lean against the counter and think for a moment.
“Well, I thought it was good. Barry was terrible to Helen, Ray was kinda freaky, Julie’s mom was a real one, some of the scenes were cool. The gunshot during the fireworks show was clever, I liked that. A crazed brother is a little silly, I wonder what happened to poor Megan. I feel bad for the parents of the little boy. I liked Helen but thought she was a little dim for not realizing what Barry was up to. His mom was annoying. I also like how you annotate books, by the way. Seeing your thought process is really interesting while I’m having my own, y’know?”
Y/n finishes, looking at me. Their look is knowing, so I know they read the note. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I wonder what they’ll say, if anything. The silence that follows what they say is awkward.
And then, “I’ll go out with you.”
They hand me the note, and I see that they checked off the yes box. I look up and see them smiling at me. I give a small smile back.
Maybe it wasn’t a mistake after all.

hi, first of all, i wanna say you really have inspired me to get back into reading batman comics again, but i'm really lost for where to start since even when i used to read comics i just read the one that was available in the store and never really understood them, so i was hoping if you could maybe help me with some titles? Just to begin again, please?
also, i'm very sorry if this is too long, and if it bothers you
thank you in advance 🙇🏽♀️
BATMAN COMICS: WHERE TO START ?!
i would be delighted to help you out. my first and most important recommendation is to stay away from the main titles (Batman and Detective Comics) until you're ready to jump into a long run. there are loads of other titles that contain far better stories that don't require lots of pre-established knowledge. for someone as oversaturated batman, i do think the quality of the story is far more important than the quantity of it.

1. Batman: Black and White
as the name suggests, this series is entirely in black and white only. it has three different collections: 1996 (volume 1), 2014 (volume 4) and 2021 (volume 5). volumes 2 and 3 are back-up issues collected specifically from Batman: Gotham Knights (which i also recommend)!!
it is an anthology of dozens of different writers and artists, so every story is unique and seperate from one another! it features some of the most quintessential Batman stories you will ever find.

2. Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight
similar to the previous rec, LotDK is an anthology of many stories. each arc lasts about 3-5 issues, and after every story a new creative team takes over — so every story is different and unconnected. the only similarity is that most of the stories are set in bruce's first year as batman.
what i particularly like about this one is that if you start a story and you don't like it, you can simply skip the next couple issues and move onto the next one. they're all very different while still maintaining this feeling of a consistent universe!

3. Batman: Shadow of the Bat
moving onto some stories that are about the extended family and friends, SotB is a series that took place along-side the 1992-2000 run of the main title Batman. as a result, some of the stories do reference events that took place during those runs, however it is much more focused in exploring the deeper thoughts and feelings of Batman-related characters who were popular at the time.
if you find any of the stories particularly interesting, you can then match it to the main-timeline event it is referencing and read more on it in either Batman or Detective Comics!

4. The Batman Chronicles
this one is also not only about batfam+friends, but Gotham as a whole. it also develops stories that are "missing" from the main titles, so if you're ever like 'hey i wonder what Barbara was doing before she became oracle?' then you can find that here (in The Batman Chronicles #5). it is again focused more in the emotional and deeper side of the detecive comics genre, and so i think it's essential batman reading!

5. Batman: Urban Legends
for modern comics, Urban Legends is a very recent (2023) anthology series with multiple short stories that are either carried throughout different issues or standalones. compared to the other recs, this one best explores characters outside of just batman, building very detailed words and stories!
i know these recs were all anthologies, and it might be bit of an unpopular opinion, but i think this is the best way to get into batman comics. you get a feel for the fundamentals of the character, his many skills and flaws expressed through many different stories (and writers) — and so you can come to your own conclusions about what a "good" batman story is. it also allows you to become familiar with all the other bat-related characters without having to read through hundreds of origins and retcons. mainly, i think it builds confidence to then explore any and all batman comics, without fear of not comprehending the overarching lore. if you want some specific stories or issues that are not part of collections, i will share some recs for that too :] enjoy !!
