I saw a post going around about costube historians analyzing period film costumes for accuracy and it kind of got under my skin, so I'm sitting down and writing ... not exactly a response to it, but a discussion of the topic.

(It would be a direct response except that I don't actually watch costube, because quite frankly I can't watch/listen to people discuss things I already know. And I don't want to be like "they don't do X!" when maybe they really do X and I'm just not aware. But a lot of the complaints hit the same points that have been brought up against fashion historians for reviewing costumes for decades. I would also note that I have looked into specific videos where there were claims of terrible costuber behavior and watched them and found nothing.)

If you're going to analyze a period film's costuming in any way, you should still interact with the historical aspect to some degree. If you want to talk about the use of bold stripes in Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, for instance, and you don't mention that they were in style during the period the film appears to be set in, it's kind of weird.

Likewise, yes, if you're critiquing primarily from the angle of historical accuracy, you should also engage to at least some extent with the reasoning behind the inaccuracy. If a reviewer doesn't do so at all, then yes, their review is probably not as good as it could be.

People pointing out an inaccuracy (or many inaccuracies) are not inherently scolding the costume designer. Even if their tone is something other than sweet. Sometimes they are scolding other people involved in the production, like the director who mandated a particular costume, or just a general notion of TPTB. Usually they are divorcing the art from the artist, though, and just reviewing the costuming from their particular viewpoint and knowledge base for a likeminded audience.

Sometimes, yes, they are complaining directly about the costume designer. This is not a crime. Some costume designers (for instance, Sandy Powell) have an incredible grasp on fashion history and excellent taste when it comes to diverging from it. Others simply don't have as in-depth of an understanding and make design decisions sometimes based on stereotypes and myths. Some costume designers will explain their decisions in interviews or blog posts and make it clear that they didn't make a truly informed decision about accuracy because they didn't know enough about the period. It's important for both sides of the equation to stop painting the other with too broad of a brush ("ivory-tower elitists who have no idea of a production's needs or budget" vs. "costumers who know how to sew but not how to do historical research").

If you're allowed to complain about a writer or a director or an actor doing something you don't like in a movie, you're also allowed to complain about a costume designer. You're allowed to have aesthetic preferences, and even to talk about them without hedging every five seconds to make it clear that others can disagree, although some of this is beneficial with any critique. Why would it be otherwise?

This seems really obvious to me, but maybe it's not? But "they costumed that female actor in an anachronistically sexy way because sex sells" is a feminist issue. The assumption that women's bodies should be sites of less-clothed allure while men's should attract by being more covered (with more layers than in modern dress, with cravats, etc.) is sexist. Complaints about female characters being costumed inaccurately are often being made along these lines, and pointing out that the producers insisted on it or something does not mean it's suddenly unproblematic that every female character deemed fuckable has to have low necklines at all times and modern shiny hair.

It's true that fiction isn't non-fiction and shouldn't be taken that way, but it's also demonstrably true that viewers do take cliches in film aesthetics as accurate when they see them enough times. People cite Scarlett O'Hara's 18" waist. They believe there were no bright colors before the 1920s and that women couldn't have put their hair up unless they were wealthy. These beliefs have consequences when it comes to public perceptions of history, and if films perpetuate them it's perfectly reasonable to point out that they support ideas about e.g. gender roles that trads express today.

It's also simply funny when a film's hair or costuming or makeup is supposed to evoke a lack of artifice but actually requires quite a bit of artifice because people don't naturally have perfect hair and skin and so on.

If you don't like reviews of period films that focus on the accuracy of the costuming, maybe ... don't watch/read reviews by fashion historians and historical costumers? At least unless they're vetted for you by someone who doesn't mind that?

Illness won't stop love (Cured!King Baldwin IV x Witch!Female!Reader) (Part 2)

Many noticed that the king was often pacing and in a rush. The second he could he gathered all the greatest men to find the witch that cured him of his leprosy.

Many of his servants and staff were surprised about the fact that their leper king was no longer ill. Many rejoiced and many felt envy and malice but in Baldwin's mind he couldn't care less. His mind often wandered to the witch, unexpected yet he took joy in the fact that he now has feelings in his body, he can be normal, and he looks just like he used to when he was a young boy (if not older).

But even then his mind was all on the woman that cured him. How could it be possible? Who was this lady shrouded in mystery? Why would she cure him? So many questions yet little to answer.

He had been keeping note of everything of the past few days.

Gifts, notes, and odd items would show up next to his bed every morning. At first he thought it was his sisters doing but as he read the notes and letters left for him, he saw odd symbols, words, dialects he was unfamiliar with. As more gifts and items showed up he became suspicious.

He began to think it was the witches doing. He decided that he was going to catch who it was tonight!

As he neared his quarters, a candle slightly covered by his hand, the door to his bedroom creaked open as he slowly stepped inside and softly shut the door behind him.

He decided he was going to stay posted by his cracked open door, whoever was leaving the gifts

After about 30 minutes of waiting, Baldwin heard quiet and soft footsteps approaching the door and stopping in front of it. His breath hitches as he was prepared to stand up from his sitting position and catch the person.

As he used the wall to stand, he calmly pushed the doors open as he stepped out into the hall and caught the person red handed.

He heard a female gasp and the smaller cloaked figure stumbles back in surprise. He looked down at them and spoke in a soft and calm voice "Ah, so you are the one leaving me gifts....are you courting me?".

The female looked around and tried to sprint away but he quickly grabbed them and tried to stop her, stepping in front of her preventing her from dashing away immediately.

"I just wish to know your identity.." He carefully reached his healed yet scarred hand up and carefully lowered the hood of the cloak, blue eyes widening as he saw the very woman that managed to cure him of his worst ailment.

He gently brushed her H/C behind her ears and smiled softly. "Never have I imagined myself being able to love another...I feared that I would kill them...but you cured me and made that possible.". He gently grasped her hand close "Would you allow me to share my heart with you, my lady?".

Suddenly, Baldwin leaned in and gently yet passionately kissed the witch, making her eyes widen before she melted into the kiss. What were once his cracked and splitting lips, were now silky smooth and soft, making the woman's heart flutter and he gently held her hips.

He prayed that you would join him in his Kingdom of Heaven.

i know joe is a (Legally Distinct From The Muppets™️) felted marionette-and-hand puppet this season but i really like to image him as a sock juppet for the sake of my own personal amusement

when i was a kid i would make one of my dolls these dresses that were socks with holes cut in them for her arms and head, and then i'd use my very limited sewing knowledge to very poorly and loosely embroider designs on them. and i like to imagine that the @ symbol is something akin to that level of embroidery, just like. literally a line of string that is not really held down at all outside of the very ends where it enters and exits the sock. i also feel like with this theoretical design the eyes are buttons that are hanging on by a thread - literally - and made of like. hard plastic. the type you'd find in a spare button tin for if your pants need an emergency button

Yesterday's poll decided that The Adventurer should relax by spending his afternoon shopping ..

He trots down the mossy cobblestone walkway, gazing around in awe as he approaches the central hub of the small city. Tiny shops and stalls and carts are woven through the few clusters of taller buildings, with a modest crowd bustling back and forth between them. Despite much of the land being cleared for structures and pathways, it's still lush with greenery wherever it can be, every blank stone wall or street corner dotted with trailing vines and flowering fruit trees.

After spending a good 25 minutes trying to orient himself at the city map directory, he finally finds his way onto one of the primary shopping streets, eager to spend the afternoon lazily strolling about, trying to ignore his physical aches and just take in all the sights as he hunts for interesting items....

...A few hours (and multiple snack breaks) later, the streets begin to glow with a hazy warmth as lanterns are lit, marking the nearing sunset. Possibly because of the fight yesterday, he's felt shakier, more easily startled than usual, and suddenly realizes an urgent need to be safely inside his room at the inn before nightfall. He wanted to stay out longer, see the lights and the crowds, fascinating scenes of city nightlife he's never been exposed to before.. but, his nerves are impossible to ignore.

Begrudgingly preparing to slink off towards the inn in a sweaty anxious panic, he stops in the doorway, resolving to at LEAST buy himself ONE nice item before he leaves. He doesn't have much money, sure, but it'd be a shame to simply look around all day and not get anything. All travelers need to collect their souvenirs, right? But.. What should he get?

I also just found out about the Goncharov Game Jam.

It appears this opened a day after after the meme took off.

Goncharov was first entered into Wikipedia between Day 4 and 5 (attempts to vandalise it with fake info don't count, incidentally – please knock that shit off) under List of Internet Phenomena. This was then expanded into its own Wikipedia page at the end of Day 5 because, according to the talk history: "the topic now meets the notability threshold for its own artice due to significant coverage in The New York Times and other sources cited." We're on Wikipedia, people!

And then we made The Guardian half a day later. So while the meme is definitely dying down to embers by now, it still stays winning.
