have you ever put on some study music and found yourself not able to focus? here is my subject/activity study music/ambience tip guide to help you be productive AND chilled out

first ask yourself: what am i studying?

if you are working on something mindless like copying notes, the music you listen to can be much more lively than if you were memorizing information through flashcards. your activity drastically changes your ability to listen to certain types of music.

now that you know your activity, ask what type of music goes with the theme of what you are studying.

if you are reading a book for english, a perfect music type would be classical to make you feel like a dark academia scholar. typing your music to your activity makes you more motivated because it feels like you're part of a story.

personal anecdote: i had a series of powerpoints i went through and highlighted, so i put on spy music so i felt like i was a top secret agent scanning through intel. corny? perhaps. but really fun and made the studying activity less dreadful.

if you are just trying to get through the assignments at hand, use music that matches the energy you aspire to have.

we've all been there. four hours into a study session and you are just trying not to evaporate. final push calls for upbeat music, even repetitive music. i once put on megalovania until an assignment was done because it a) made me feel like i was in a boss fight so the pressure was on and b) just wanted to turn off that stupid song, so i finished the assignment quicker.

now for some recommendations!

hito lofi has amazing 1 hour long mixes, perfect for long study sessions where you want some variety in vibes for each block.

chill crossing hour combines animal crossing visuals and jazz/lofi with ambiences. this one is great if you just need a little brain treat and want to feel involved in the study ambiences.

want to feel like a lone wolf emo mc with a dark past and a thirst for knowledge? futurescapes has you covered. excellent for when my brain needs something to get it going but cannot take much else.

this yt channel singlehandedly got me through my freshman year of undergrad. built in pomodoro timers with themed ambiences to harry potter, lotr, marvel, and more. so studious and so much fun.

Been a while since I've covered something closer to a "meme medley", hasn't it? It's a bit of a conundrum really, the rips like Memey Hell, Rippin'! Mashin'! High Quality Grand Prix and A love letter to this wonderful community and my amazing friends are some of the most relistenable on the entire channel due to the sheer variety found within them, yet they're simultaneously very hard to write about for the purpose of this blog. I can approach these posts from a lot of different angles, be it the history of a ripper, history of a joke's presence on the channel, the unique sound of a game, a rip's relevance to the lore and goings-on of the channel at that time - all of which provide me with a lot to say, in contrast to simply saying that a rip is just a really good listen. But some of these meme medleys ARE just really good listens, ones that I recommend wholeheartedly of course, but ones that can be rather hard to turn into an interesting read. Still, Fezaki's enthusiasm for Man, why does every Bleck actor gotta rap some in the request form is one I absolutely share, so I'll try my best to do it justice in my coverage. After all, Half Pixel made my darling Everybody's Special Course as far back as Season 1 - he's almost bound to knock it out of the park no matter what!

Then again, I suppose it is wrong of me to present this rip as if it's just like those other meme medleys, it's pretty apparent right from the start that there's something quite special about it. I mean for one, there's the track its arranging: Super Paper Mario is a game that wears its weirdness on its sleeve in every aspect including its music, to where even though Champion of Destruction is actually still playing in 4/4ths time signature, it still sounds incredibly uneasy and chaotic - a lot like The Ultimate Show as heard over in The Ultimate Whip and Nae Nae. Yet with both tracks, through the noise and chaos, a strong melody prevails throughout, which is where Man, why does every Bleck actor gotta rap some makes its second distinction, in having the lead vocals of Childish Gambino's Bonfire be pitch-shifted to said melody. Bonfire is a classic in SiIva mashups, you can hear it as far back in Season 1 with the aforementioned Memey Hell, yet its rarely played with to the extent that it is in this rip. The song headlines the rip for about half of its playtime, with a few other rip sources complimenting it along the way: Space Jam's immediately identifiable drums, a quick Flintstones cue melodyswapped into the song's original backing instrumental, and so on, it's all incredibly seamless, yet all building up to the track's final ace up its sleeve. As the rip builds and builds, as Bonfire's vocals end and we're left with naught but the instrumental - you realize that The Ultimate Show has been playing about 20% slower than its supposed to.

Suddenly, things speed up: Chip tha Ripper's drums playing in the background start feeling louder, the vocals of Space Jam kick in for just a moment, bits of Gangnam Style and We Are Number One and MEGALOVANIA play one after another - It truly feels as if the rip begins spiraling, sort of like we saw back in my rip :) yet with far more buildup and cohesion present before things start to plummet. Yet there's a harmony to the back half's chaos althesame, much like the channel's other meme medleys - it IS an undisputed banger, just one that manages to hit far harder than it has any right to through an incredibly well done lead-in. I can't even call it a bait-and-switch, the transition between its two halves is so incredibly seamless and natural to where I cannot see the rip working nearly as well without the two parts together.

Being part of some of the first-ever rips we'd get to hear for Season 4 Episode 1, I have to wonder if the two-part structure of Man, why does every Bleck actor gotta rap some was a move Half Pixel made deliberately for the premiere. I mean, he's no stranger to making incredibly dense rips for the channel, even helping kick off the currently-ongoing Season 8 with Nucleear Pomeranian - but given that Season 4's stated goal was to surprise the audience far more than usual, it almost feels as if Man, why does every Bleck actor gotta rap some was Half Pixel's way to lean into that philosophy. Intentional or not, the end result is amazing, it's the kind of rip that just oozes above-and-beyond personality from every corner, and acts as confident reassurance that Half Pixel has STILL got it.

advice on running curse of strahd that no one asked for. my credentials are having ran it, it becoming the thing my group compares all other campaigns against, and ravenloft being one of my spins.

1st pc that dies should be offered a dark gift resurrection, especially if if it happens early on. the horror of barovia's soul bubble is important and should communicated to your heroes early as part of motivation. nobody wants to be caught in the soul blender. it also gives great character/backstory opportunity

rig the cards lightly. they aren't equal and you should not have them drag along an 8 year old just because thats the card they got.

don't hesitate to introduce ez early. also ignore the bit abt rvr sparing her parents and let her be his fucked up adoptee. or straight up give her arturi's backstory/make her arturi. as written contradicts his backstory and vrgtr and general radanovich lore anyways.

steal from reddit; a lot of people have shared their really fun and creative ideas. use them.

Ah…did you really think it would be as easy as reviewing Heinoustuck once? No…just like any good horror movie villain, it’s hard to kill Heinoustuck. It will never die. And it hath returned once again, to grace us with it’s presence before inevitably being put into a slumber for 100000 years, give or take…but it will return, mark my words…

Also I see we’re going with the MEGALOVANIA/Kant’s Principles of right and Right on this title, huh? Gonna have to MAKE ME put in all lower case for the title, are we? Whatever, I can deal. And the deal with this webcomic is, it’s a continuation of Heinoustuck, and that should tell you right then and there that we have OFFICIALLY crossed the threshold for Homestuck Fandom stuff to be NOSTALGIC AGAIN!!!!!!!! YAY?

Hmmm…it was just regular old heinoustuck, the same good ol’ quality that I had come to expect, and then I got hit with the “r” slur. It’s being spoken by Karkat, but still…kinda not happy about that. This is what, 2019? And I don’t even know if the author knows that that’s not acceptable in 2019. Heck, it wasn’t even acceptable in 2009, if we want to get down to brass tax about this (is that even an expression?). Anyways, usage of that word always sours the mood, is what I’m saying. Also, what sours the mood is clearly a panel from CANWC, which is…a bit of a red flag if I’m being perfectly honest with you. And…there’s another usage of the r slur. Yeah…this one, unlike the original, isn’t that good or interesting? I would not recommend it.

Mar’s Long Ass “Why You Should Play Live A Live Post”

put under a cut because. if you can believe it. I have a lot to say about my favorite video game

so! for starters. live a live is a JRPG made by squaresoft (now square enix) for the super famicom. it never received an official English translation, but it received a fan translation.

HOWEVER. it then received an HD-2D remake with an official translation, full voice acting, and beautiful new graphics. that is what is on the steam page.

live a live is a wonderful game. it’s experimental, with many small chapters taking place in different settings with entirely different gameplay ideas. (the characters for each chapter were also designed by different mangaka!)

no chapter outstays its welcome, and it plays around with a lot of genre tropes. it’s got a little bit of something for everyone. I think the real beauty of it is how it goes along with or subverts typical expectations for each chapters genre. I won’t give specific examples of this, as it would spoil what makes the game so interesting, but. You’ll know the point where the game starts subverting when you get there :) (<-threatening)

the game’s also drop dead gorgeous now with the remake, the music slaps, and-

oh yeah the music. the final boss theme for each chapter is megalomania. “wait like megalovania-“ YES LIKE MEGALOVANIA

Toby fox was actually inspired quite a bit by live a live ! there’s a very fun interview between him and live a live’s composer here, though be wary of spoilers! maybe wait to read it until you’re finished with the game.

live a live’s characters are also. amazing. the writing is top notch, and you really grow to love each and every protagonist.

the battle system is also very interesting and involves positioning yourself around on the map strategically to be out of the line of fire, while also putting the enemy in your line of fire! it doesn’t often get hard, but it feels very cool when it does.

I think that’s all I’ve got for recommending it. so here is a little section of questions I could imagine someone thinking and answers.

“what about the super famicom original?” - I love the original too, and I honestly prefer the fan translation for two of the chapters (the rest I vastly prefer the official one). I’d recommend the remake first, but if it grabs you, you should totally go back and play the original as well. live a live has a few different choices/routes in different chapters, so that could be a fun way to experience them!

“wait what order do I play the chapters in?” - whatever order you want! my personal recommendation is distant future, wild west, imperial china, prehistory, present day, near future, and then twilight of edo japan. (don’t play twilight of edo Japan first. Especially if you’re going for pacifist route without a guide!)

“that sounds cool as hell but. $20 is a bit steep” - if you’re worried about it being too short to get your money’s worth, a completionist run is about 30 hours! if it’s more an issue of just not being able to afford that currently, then. well. if you are okay with piracy literally hit me up.

even if you don't like homestuck and have no intention of reading it, you should listen to the music. the music is INSANELY good and you don't have to know the context behind the songs to appreciate them - both because a lot of the music is supplemental and doesn't exist in the comic at all, and also because a lot of the stuff that IS in the comic was made before it was put in, so there isn't much context to speak of.

you can listen to it all on the homestuck bandcamp (or on youtube, but you don't even have to pay to listen to the songs on bandcamp, just if you want to download them off the website so i suggest you listen there) (also i just checked the bandcamp and it looks like some of the albums may have been removed? not sure but most of it is still there)

Frank, is there anything you like to get up to in the late night / early morning? I could use some suggestions.

Real answer: keeping myself awake just in case I need to answer any other nighttime asks that may come in. (Don't worry, I don't actually have people who want to ask me late night/early morning questions, I just want to be sure I'll see the message)

Suggestion: as an alternative to just staying up in bed, go for a walk. Go for a walk through the dark quiet streets. The air will feel fresh and pure, the sky will be vast and wonderful. Go for a walk while listening to some sort of relaxing background music. I recommend an 80s remix of the Megalovania OST, available here. Make sure to wear something you feel comfortable wearing, something that fits your sense of style. Do not overdress, as you may sweat. Do not underdress, as you may be cold.

If you wear glasses, consider switching to some form of contact lenses. Switching to contact lens brand right before going on a walk is a good time to switch brands if you're feeling impulsive. You can always stop at a 7-11 or convenience store to buy a new pair or even a new pair for the first time. All your vision should be clear, no matter which lenses you go for.

Suggestion (see above, but longer): staying up to answer asks is a bad idea, because you will almost always need to sleep even if you want to wake up feeling refreshed. Because of this, if you are going to stay up late, you should avoid making concrete plans, because the plans are likely to fall through if you can't get up in time to accomplish them. Instead, focus on the big picture. Keep yourself awake so that if you have to get up early, you can decide what you want to do when you wake up, and then put the big plan into action. Maybe you want to do something like "go for a walk," or "work on the big project you've been procrastinating on for 5 hours." Maybe you want to go to a location and simply observe or do nothing for an hour or two. Whatever. The point is to make something general and open-ended, where you can actually complete it if you have to, rather than something concrete like "go read this Wikipedia article."
