i can't be mad at the lack of celebration (and overall energy, really) on my birthday because really, i asked for this. not outright, but literally as i was typing this, my mother asked what i wanted to do and i just.. can't give her an answer. i literally have no idea why i'm so stiff about it — you'd think i would want a little bit of something, but i... i dunno.
but i do feel... eh... melancholy, i suppose. i don't feel happy, that's for damn sure. i can't cry necessarily, but i just... am very sad. don't really know why. i'm trying to stay happy, i am. and it sounds stupid for me, the person who actively avoids any sort of celebration and excitement on their birthday, to be so bummed out by the lack of enthusiasm, but... i guess i feel unimportant? i don't get gifts or anything like that either. not like i have any business feeling that way when i literally did this to myself, but... the feeling's still there.
it's 2:15 now, and i'm still in my pjs just.. playing video games. i ordered some food with the last of my money and... yeah. that's just it. it's just a normal day. nothing special. that's what's getting me, i guess. nothing special happened on this day. i have a lot of growing to do before i consider myself important enough to be excited/hold my birthday in high enough regard that i actually do something.
(update: they canceled my order, lol. so i'm just not gonna bother anymore. i'm emotionally drained.)

I keep seeing people use this image as a reaction to people's original posts:
Tumblr media
Which I think is really incorrect, because with an original post they haven't come up to ur window, u've come up to their window.
So I made this, as a more accurate reaction for original posts:

that article going around abt firefox's new ad program is annoying bc it's phrased as though "mozilla has finally TURNED on its people and is SELLING YOU OUT for cold hard cash!!" when. that's not what's happening. it is specifically being implemented to discourage tracking behavior, and literally all the data they are giving to advertisers is aggregate and anonymized, which is like, the opposite of what that post wants you to worry about, lol

this speaking as a cis person. Nothing brings me more joy seeing people find gender euphoria in becoming a mediocre representation of humanity. And I mean that so genuinely. Local boy finds joy and fulfillment wearing a cargo shorts and t-shirt combo. Local girl has transitioned to look like someone's disheveled aunt, has never been happier. Local person experiences gender euphoria rocking the world's worst bowl-cut. Without a scap of irony, this shit makes me see the wonder and whimsy in just, being a human. An average, person going through their day-to-day, is a wondrous thing? That's amazing. And heteronormativity has stripped these experiences of their joy. Like you're right, wearing a basic girlypop skirt should make my heart sing. Why not? Why are these expressions lesser because they're normal? All this to say. Shoutout to all the basic bitches out there. Yes that polo shirt does make you look like a divorced golfer dad. Yes, that too is kind of a slay, now that I think of it.

this is your random reminder to CHECK IF YOU'RE STILL HAVING FUN
are you enjoying scrolling tumblr? watching youtube? reading that book? playing that game? drawing that art? doing that activity? if not,
YOU CAN STOP AND DO SOMETHING ELSE
you don't have to stick to something that you are doing for fun if it isn't fun for you anymore. You can come back! If you've loved it before you are likely to love it again! but you can stop!
Don't get stuck in a loop of doing something that you think should be fun when it isn't! You can put it down for a bit! Maybe that's the very thing that will make it fun again later!

Christmas as a cultural icon is starting to get really dystopian in a climate sense, december has historically been a time of year in which there would be snow in a significant portion of europe and north america, and the fact that its not even icy this time of year and all the christmas songs and decorations reference a time of year that will likely never exist in the same way again in my life time is so strange.

So there's something I want to say re: intentionally withholding your vote, and I want to do it without coming across as condescending or dismissive.
I've worked as a field organizer in two campaigns, 2010 and 2012, and my job was to help turnout the vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ticket. Technology may have changed, but people are still knocking on doors for specific voters the way they were 12 years ago.
If you say you're not voting/voting 3rd party, the campaign volunteer is supposed to mark that and move on. Their job, in the final month of the election, is to make sure the campaign's supporters have all the information and resources they need to cast a vote.
They aren't collecting data on why you're withholding your vote. They aren't submitting opinion polling results to the campaign. Something like 155 million people voted in the 2020 election, and if you say you're not voting, the campaign is not going to waste a volunteer's time and morale begging you to vote when there are literally millions of other voters to turn out.
Let me repeat that: The campaign does not track why you're not voting. They simply note your vote is not a priority for turnout and move on.
I say this because I see a lot of promotion of non-voting like that's a boycott, when the function is not the same. A boycott is a coordinated mass refusal to engage with an institution—which sounds similar if you see a vote as a good or service to withhold. Unfortunately, it's not.
A vote is a choice you're making as part of a community hiring committee. Your abstention doesn't prevent someone from being hired. It just lowers the threshold for the worst candidate to succeed.
All this to say: In my direct experience as an organizer, abstaining from the vote sends a message. That message is not "You need to try harder to win my vote." It's "Don't waste time on me."
