Yes, totally agreed with all of this! It's quite a scene.

I sometimes see people thinking Gon did go on real dates and that it's this dark thing, but the whole point of the scene is the misunderstanding they're having and how much it causes Killua to panic. Gon leads off with saying "most" of his dates were with Aunt Mito, which immediately tells you that his definition of what constitutes a "date" is skewed. I think his other non-Mito "dates" were probably things like, him showing women around the island and maybe they treat him to dinner as a thank you/because he's a cute friendly kid, and probably when he did this sort of thing they or other people would joke about "cougars."

I absolutely think that line about Mito is intended to clue us off to the fact Gon doesn't know what he's talking about. Plus, there are repeated scenes throughout the series and in CAA itself that emphasize how innocent Gon is about these topics.

But yeah, the whole point of the scene is that Killua is taking this all the wrong way and feels dejected as a result. It really impacts him! He takes the date with Palm and their resulting "relationship" (which the viewers know already ended by the end of the date) way more seriously than Gon does, and it makes him really uncertain what his place is at Gon's side.

It always amazes me just how explicitly this subplot implies Killua's romantic feelings. It's never outright stated, but the whole subplot centers on the exact nature of Killua's feelings and essentially confirms that they are, in fact, romantic.

The whole dating conversation between Gon and Killua makes me lose my mind. neither of them have any damn clue what they're talking about or what the other is actually saying.

Gon says "oh yeah I've been on dates" but there is no way from the tone of this scene that they are anything but his aunt Mito telling him to be super well-behaved and courteous to female guests. he does not actually know what a date is. he thinks it's just 'guy does nice gestures for girl', with all the confidence of someone who has like. surface level, blanket knowledge of a subject but no actual depth djfhbvsdld. Meanwhile, all this goes right over Killua's head and he takes it to mean that Gon has real actual dating experience with older women at age 13, and any normal person would probably be calling fucking 911, but Killua has no damn clue what's normal so he just goes "oh my god. he has dated women -> he has experience -> he wants to date women -> he's going to leave me"

And then Killua proceeds to have an entire sad gay crisis about it

outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative

actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.

but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too

also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain

side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty

The manga industry, especially JUMP, needs to hurry up and do away with weekly scheduling for mangaka. There needs to better regulations put into place for their health and safety because this is pitiful. Two weeks - monthly updates should’ve already been the standard for the manga industry at this point. ITS LITERALLY THE SWEETEST

I don't see anyone talking about how they showed Astrid's character development through her hair so I'm going to.

In HTTYD 1 we get this very emo lookin cut. Since the first movie is told through Hiccup's POV, it matches how he sees her: unapproachable, scary, and tough. Even the back of her hair, it's tied up tightly to show her uptight and no-nonsense attitude.

But after she sees Hiccup for who he is, she pushes her hair out of her eye so he can see her entire face. Almost like she's "letting him in", if not to be cliché. He gets to look her in the eyes when he talks to her, whereas before he avoided her stare.

Then we get to RTTE and her fringe is shorter and doesn't completely cover her eye as much. Her hair is much softer, showing how she herself has softened (preferring capture over kill missions as she says). And the back of her hair is looser and bounces about the place.

In HTTYD 2, there's not a huge change because RTTE happens pretty close to the second film but her hair is on the side now. You could take this as her being less uptight and war obsessed because a braid on the side isn't very practical for battle but she's a lot more relaxed about it now. Edit: also there hasn't been as much war in the last 5 years than there was before HTTYD 1 so choosing aesthetic over function is a lot easier to do. She doesn't have to sacrifice her beauty anymore for the sake of fighting.

And in HTTYD 3, her fringe is out of her face and her hair is fully let down. She's relaxed and comfortable with her femininity as well that she's so toned back from how angry she used to be in HTTYD 1 like she said, "I'm the person I am today because of you," - it really shows the effect her relationship with Hiccup has had on her. That he's made her comfortable to embrace her feminine side.

(side note, her hair in HTTYD 3 was gorgeous)

And you could even say her marital braids represent Zephyr and Nuffink.

I've just always loved how they showed her change through her hair, it's such a cool and subtle way to do something like that. And of course, it's beautiful 😁
