My first cat hated men.

I got him when he was just a tiny kitten and I had only come out as genderfluid at the time in college. I was also dating a gay trans guy that embraced being effeminate to some degree. Essentially both of us were figuring shit out, to say the least.

I had him for about 8 years, but had to rehome him towards the end of our time, as my transition had progressed enough to trigger him being extremely stressed, and vocally and physically aggressive. I had broken up with my bf, and was living with two women at this point in my life, so he was able to have some bit of happiness but the moment he saw me, any of that feeling was immediately gone.

I adored and loved this cat so much. When I tell you I did Everything to try and keep him, I mean it. My roommates helped me. We tried so many things. I cried so much at the idea of having to rehome him. I never thought I would be someone on that situation. I just knew he was miserable and I couldn’t stand it.

So a college friend of my roomies, Sally, lost her childhood cat of 16 years around the same time this was happening. She didn’t really want to move on quickly or anything but we essentially begged her to watch him for a weekend, to see if he could/would be happier around her. (This was more complicated than I can summarize here but we didn’t actually push it on her but knew it wasn’t unreasonable to ask due to circumstances I’m not elaborating on).

She agreed and she fell so deeply in love with him that she didn’t want to give him back.

Oh, that was still the hardest decision, despite knowing he hated me. I loved and still love him. She was just so happy and so was he. I knew he’s be safe and loved; I couldn’t say no.

We’ve lost touch since then, and she doesn’t use any social media, but I think about them all the time. He would be around 15 now and I wonder how he’s doing all the time. She doesn’t talk to anyone from graduate school, and has no online presence that know of (listen I’m curious so I check occasionally, not trying to be a creep) so i haven’t been able to ask and just have to let it go, but I hope they’re both doing great.

It is funny. Recently I had a transphobe argue to me, that "well, it is all made up! Animals will still not know that you identify as a man". Which to me is so funny, because while there has never been extensive research done on this topic, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence showing the exact opposite.

As someone who has done a lot of work with animals, I can tell you, that those animals that for one reason or another like one gender more or less than another often show the same loving or hostile behavior towards people completely depending on the gender the people actually identifies as.

"Sure," some people might say, "because if you take hormons you gonna smell like the gender to an animal." But that is the funny part. Animals often act according to that with trans adults who are still in egg mode. Who have not come out yet. And nobody knows why and how they can tell.

But some of the harsher animals with a "gender preference in humans" are like the best trans indicators. You have not admitted to yourself you are a guy? Yeah, this cat is gonna hate you anyways. Because this cat hates men.

Goodbye Rock Kingdom...

This is my idea for what specifically the far north-west region of the Rock Kingdom looks like, the part bordering the forested colorful Pop territory, and known as the backwater, hick part of the country. It's very scarcely populated with mainly woolly caterpillar farms and small settlements, and it's where Les and Hed are from.

While the center of the kingdom is a large active volcano which doesn't lend itself to most plant life, I imagine there's more and more the further away you travel from it. My main inspiration for this part of the country were the tundra biome and the Scottish highlands — with the ground mostly being covered in rock and a thin layer of soil and flora: mostly low growing vegetation like lichen, moss and herbs, and nothing taller than subshrubs such as heather and berry bushes. Actual shrubs and trees start to show up only when you start to near the Pop Forest.

The nature is mostly in various shades of reds, browns, grays, and earthy greens, basically the colors Rock Trolls come in, since my headcanon is that their colors are like camouflage in their natural environment. (I don't think Rock Trolls can change the color of their hair the way we see Pop Trolls do in the first movie.)

And their shaggy hair textures are supposed to resemble the environment too. With all the lichen and other rough and patchy textures, I was also trying to bring out a bit of a "grunge" effect. Though I feel like this part didn't come out in the illustrations the way I wanted it to. ':)

Overall I imagine it being a very pretty place, with open skies and amazing views, the downside is the close-mindedness of the trolls living there and the fact that there's not much going on.

Thinking a lot about post canon rookanis and one thought I keep coming back to is the power plays that would be going on between Caterina and Rook. Caterina is the First Talon, she's been the head of the household for forever and even though Lucanis is an adult, he still yields to her. At least until Rook came into the picture.

Rook's just trying to be supportive of Lucanis and get him to do the things he wants to do rather than the things he feels he has to do and now suddenly Lucanis is telling Caterina things like No (Spite is also trying to do this but is less successful in actually communicating his intent). I feel like one of the first instances of that would be Caterina telling Lucanis he should clean himself up and trim his hair and get rid of the beard and Lucanis decides that actually he's going to keep the beard because Rook likes it. It is in this moment that Caterina realizes what a threat Rook is. Sure, Lucanis didn't outright tell her no in this instance but the fact that he still he has his beard and his only explanation when Caterina questioned him about it was to mention Rook's preference was enough of a red flag for her.

Anyways, I think while Caterina respects Rook for what they've been able to accomplish, like killing two gods and getting together multiple different disparate political factions to do so, and also for standing up to Caterina herself in a twisted sort of way, but Caterina can't stand Rook for how they have disrupted the iron control Caterina has held in her household. Rook went toe to toe with the Dread Wolf and as scary as Caterina is, Rook's not going to back down if Caterina tries to interfere in their relationship with Lucanis or try to dictate what Rook should do as a proper partner of the First Talon (I just know Caterina was a nightmare mother in law and that did not change with her becoming a grandmother in law).

So I think this sort of culminates in a lot of passive aggressive power plays between Rook and Caterina with Lucanis and Illario looking on in awe as Rook politely - or perhaps not so politely - tells Caterina to shove it because you can do that???? It also probably leads to Lucanis getting stuck in the middle of the two of them which Rook is not happy about because Rook would rather engage Caterina directly but she keeps using Lucanis as a bit of a pawn in her bids to retain her ironfisted control over House Dellamorte even if Lucanis is supposedly supposed to be the new head of the house. Rook is all the more determined to get Lucanis the hell out of the Crows and away from his family at least for a while because it is lowkey destroying him. Luckily Rook has Spite to help and the force of personality to bully Illario into assisting as well because Rook is not going to be letting him off easy for the shit he pulled.

I love cool, mysterious Sung Jinwoo as much as the next person, but I also believe this guy is an absolute dumbass.

He’s so socially unaware that he could literally be in a dark room with people swinging a light as a guide and he’d still choose to walk straight into a wall in the dark because “what the fuck is that??”

If we’re looking at this romantically then the earliest example is novel Sung Jinwoo literally AVOIDING the nurses text messages. The same nurse who requested his phone number before he was discharged.

He couldn’t even fathom the idea of being known (whether romantically or not), but decided that he wasn’t going to touch that and immediately deleted the messages.

That might be the trauma talking for him, but it’s just so funny. The man literally said “nah” and returned to doing his own thing.

Now, I’m still going through the novel, finished the manwha, and have gone through the episodes of the anime so I’m still feeling him out — but I feel like Sung Jinwoo getting together with Chae Hae-in was simply because Hae-in matched his dumbass and just never left.

But with all that said, it’s why I can see him just unintentionally causing so much angst with his Reader.

And it’s all because he just DOESNT see it.

Reader could be so obviously pining and this guy would just shoulder pat cause “yeah, you’re also my friend I guess” and then turns away because a new shining notification popped up in front of his eyes.

He’s going to unintentionally friend zone SO hard to the SUN, and Reader is trying not to push, to not force anything on Jinwoo, he doesn’t even know that you like him so it’s not his fault, it’s just the way Sung Jinwoo is —

And then you hear about two S-rank hunters on a date at the amusement park.

You hear about Sung Jinwoo and Chae Hae-in together, his shadows standing at station to give them privacy.

…A date?

That didn’t sound like Jinwoo.

It had to be a friendly get together!

Jinwoo had never mentioned her before.

Jinwoo — Jinwoo has never really shown interest in others that way.

There is always a distance, a boundary of friendliness but never more.

You should know. Always the friend, never the lover. Having watched him since forever, not only with you but with others. You had come to expect the way Sung Jinwoo would avoid romance like a blind man trying to view the sun.

You knew —

But then you see them.

There’s a closeness there. It’s almost how it is between Jinwoo and you, but something is different. Something is… strange there.

Is it the way Cha Hae-in looks at the man with a softness in her gaze, a warmth that speaks of care?

Or is it the way Jinwoo is looking straight back at the woman, his gaze steady, unwavering, a smile that seemed just as fond?

You knew Jinwoo, you knew Sung Jinwoo, but had he ever once shown a face like that before? As if he was so very comfortable where he was?

… Oh.

Oh.

You understood now.

It wasn’t that Jinwoo didn’t know you liked him, it was that he didn’t want to be with you.

in general he cares about his appearance a lot; not in a self centered or an insecure way, it's just super important to him. if he knows he looks good, then he feels good, which directly impacts his performance in practice/battle—naturally, he has to make sure he's the best looking one there.

I think them as a childhood group of friends cold be very fun! Like they kinda work as a Scooby Doo/Solve It Squad kinda group except most of the crimes are actually supernatural and connected to the occult (I’m sure that’s a thing i guess Gravity Falls?) thinking of calling them the Hatchet Catchers or something like that?

Anyway Duke mostly handles the “civilian” stuff (talking to witnesses and adults) and patches everyone up with the first aid kit he keeps in his bag. Holloway is also very good with adults but she mostly handles research and take-down. Wiley is more the action type but he has a way with cult members that can get kinda creepy at times. He also sews which is fun! Sheila is best as long-cons and waiting shit out, she’s also very good to have in a fight.

Here’s them as teens too. This is like a month or so before the Accident™️.

I really like to think of Xiao as the youngest of the Yakshas, since his name 魈 (mountain demon) sounds similar to Xiao (小, small), which gives me an excuse to make the Yakshas call him Xiao Xiao, so small Xiao <33
