Not to Homestuck or anything BUT
In light of the recent canon aspect analyses.........Texas+Time, Mike+Breath, Chuck+Mind, Julie+Void and Dutch+Space! :O I don’t remember what I said for them last time and I can’t find the post anywhere, but OH MY GOD GUYS WE FINALLY HAVE CANON ASPECT DESCRIPTIONS I’VE WANTED THIS FOR SO LONG
Also, Kane is a Hope player and I’m terrified tbqh. Just like
........NO OKAY I’M PUTTING A CUT ON THIS SO I CAN YELL ABOUT MOTORCITY ASPECTS, NOT REALLY SO I CAN DEBATE IT WITH PEOPLE???? JUST BECAUSE I’M FULL OF SCREAMING
I mean hell, like, THAT sounds like a man who could conceive and create a miles-wide literal city in the sky, and then go on a relentless crusade for years to destroy the old “inferior” version. :T Black and white morality, dreaming of a more beautiful future, driven first and foremost by their convictions. Bonus: white and gold might not be the Deluxe colors, but it’s close enough I could kinda see Kane rocking it. :O
OKAY BUT ALSO like literally every word of the Breath analysis is Mike to a T and I’m dying, I CALLED that one. That one I KNEW. I remember saying that was a thing very specifically.
...................I don’t really have much to add to that, except for a lot of hearts because I love him, my good son.
ALSO!!! ALSO OH MY GOD?!?!?! I SAID TEXAS SHOULD BE A TIME PLAYER BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY BUT OH MY GOD GUYS
TEEEEXAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!! TEXAS WITH TIME TRAVEL!!!!!!
I’m super torn on Chuck, because now that we have descriptions I’m just kind of staring back and forth between Mind and Light and making a long, continuous groaning noise--but I mean.......
Chuck’s not big on his own identity as evidence by the way his biggest hobby is going out and pretending to be somebody cool and awesome and in control of the situation, so I really like that their identity is fluid point, too. :O It feels kind of pat to give The Smart Guy mind, and like I said I’m just........gnnnghhh. Light would also work.......
......buuuuuut also oh my god ALEX HARLEY is 1000000% a light player with NO debate involved. God, my insufferable son. Brief sidebar for OC time
^^^^^If anybody needed to know anything about Harley’s character, this Light aspect blurb calls him the FUCK out, like holy shit. WOW.
............fussy, pedantic and insensitive, oh my god. that’s my boy! TuT It’s Chuck at his worst too, so I’m still kind of torn, but Chuck doesn’t seem as concerned with taking risks or being aggressive about seeking out knowledge for knowledge’s sake. Strategy vs. academia. This is the one I’m most torn about, but hey, that’s why these things are fun. :D
Dutch could probably also have been a void player, but space seems to be more based on creation and innovation, which is his jam! :O HE MAKE!!!
“Catch them recycling the old to make the new, the fresh, and the beautiful.” I WAS JUST OVERCOME WITH FEELINGS ABOUT DUTCH, HOW GOOD. Also fits his scorpion theme! Dutch tends to be chill about stuff until the point he’s not, at which point he’s got a pretty sharp temper and he’s totally willing to lash out/fight! “choose your battles wisely” doesn’t 100% describe Dutch, but I really like him and Space. Feels organic.
Besides, Julie is a void player. And not just because the blurb starts with “the secret-keepers of the universe”, although that certainly contributes
Where “a state of confusion” is a literal double-life and a conflicted and emotionally-torturous war between her found family and her born one, and “casting doubt on what is considered fully understood” is the way she questions the society she was brought up in! GOD I LOVE HAVING CANON DESCRIPTIONS I LOVE HAVING CANON GUIDELINES FOR THINGS SO MUCH.
I’m super torn because I want to include Jacob and Claire, but also.....both of them are kinda Life aspect????? But I don’t want to repeat, but I don’t want to leave either of them out. >:T Maybe Jacob dies early on and then JACOBSPRITE. He’d make a pretty good sprite I’m jussayin. NO WAIT OH, OKAY, how about....
Jacob: Blood :O He’s definitely a mentoring, leading force for the Burners, but he doesn’t usually fight with them--he’s there to give support and advice.
“...Can often be found on a sinking ship” you mean like, advising and supporting a gang of five teenagers versus a terrifying man with an entire private army??? SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT. Which gives Claire.....
Claire doesn’t have nearly enough screentime in the show and it’s a goddamn tragedy, but also when we see her she’s usually supporting people! Helping the Burners even though she’s not a huge fan, picking apart their problems for them, listening to Julie’s rants and offering advice. And tbqh....
.....That’s pretty much Julie and Claire’s conflict in Julie and the Amazons??? Claire finds something that makes her really happy, and when Julie is upset Claire gets prickly back at her because come on, Claire’s been in her corner since day one!
And last but not least, and even more fitting than Mike as a breath player, uh...........Red is a Rage player..............
what a shock.......
.................."They can be frustratingly difficult to convince otherwise when they have attached themselves to an idea”......”At their worst they are cruel, uncompromising and vicious”..... “IF THEY SOUND DANGEROUS, THEY ARE”.
WELL BOY HOWDY I’LL SAY, SIGN ME UP FOR RED BUT WEARING PURPLE.
For the first time in a LONG time I’m dying to draw some Homestuck crossover content, aghghagh;ldksjf;alskdfj;aosiefma;osidf
#Life Ruiner#He Scream At Own Car#Revengo#I Am Your Father#Robot Aesthetic#The Princess#Monster Truck Hippie Grandpa#TEXAS!!!#Blue Eyes White Nerd#The Queen#AltU: Burnerstuck#ANYWAY I'M SCREAMING GUYS THIS IS WHAT I'VE WANTED FOR SO LONG#I CRAVE CANON DESCRIPTIONS OF THINGS HOLY SHIT#The nebulous nature of aspects was KILLING me#CANON ASPECT FOR ALEX HARLEY YEE now I just need a classes analysis oplease give me official descriptions oh my god#I may be doing my best on the others but Alex Harley???? I can bring the canon hammer down on haha#I mean I dare u to read that description and tell me that's NOT his character I mean holy shit

no thoughts 👁👁 just the buckley-mercer family
HARLEY HARLEY HARLEY!!!!!! I need you to know that I adore you oh my god
I know I did this last time but have some Buckley-Mercer headcanons just for you 🥰
Their living situation is a little odd
Buck’s apartment consists of him, y/n, Alex, Albert, and Luke
It’s hectic, it’s a lot, Buck has to be the responsible one and it’s a role he had to grow into but ultimately it’s the environment they need and it works for them,
Maddie’s place consists of her, Chimney, Jee, Bobby, and Reggie
It’s a little quieter but it’s also chaotic in its own way, there’s a lot of running around but it’s also filled with a ton of laughter, and no matter how many times Maddie insists they don’t have to, Bobby and Reggie always offer free babysitting
Though they are known to change arrangements a lot, sometimes Alex needs a little more peace, sometimes Reggie needs an outlet for all his energy, sometimes Y/N just needs to spend some time with her sister and they’ll make all the boys have a sleepover at Buck’s
Really it varies on a regular basis
It wasn’t always easy, in fact it kinda got worse before it got better
And it’s still not easy
But they’re learning and growing together
Y/N struggles to open up to anyone that isn’t Alex or the boys, especially when it comes to Buck and Maddie, she learns everything that happened at one point and she understands but it still hurts, sometimes she stays the night at Julie’s or May’s and those are the nights where she struggles, where it’s harder to get through the day, and they let her leave but they also check in with Ray and Athena and they’re always there in the morning waiting for her
Alex still gets really anxious every now and then, everyone else left their lives behind but sometimes there’re moments when he remembers that his parents are only a car ride away, living with family that cares about him means the world but there’s a part of him that’s scared it’ll be taken away, but these people are ones that recognize the tells he has, they go out of their way to be there for him and he realizes then that they’ll always be there to support him
Maddie is the parent figure, she’s the one they go to when they need serious advice, she’s the most level headed and has a tendency to worry the most about them, sometimes she has doubts but those are always pushed away when she hears the chorus of ‘love you Maddie!’
Chimney likes to pretend he’s also a parent figure but he’s not the best at the hard stuff, he wants to be the good guy all the time which results in things like Alex mentioning they had an idea for new merch but they were saving money to get the shirts printed and Chim ends up spending way too much money getting them the shirts along with too many other things they didn't need, he always means well though
Albert is by far the cool one, he drives them wherever they wanna go, helps them get ready for shows, covers for them if they need it (within reason of course), he’s the more lenient one who advocates and fights for them whenever everyone else is a little mad, they love having him around, he’s the one the boys go to for approval when they need an outside opinion for something the band is doing
Buck is absolutely the embarrassing one, he’s the one who worries about them when he shouldn’t, the one who tells bad jokes fully thinking they’re good. He cares about them more than anything and he lets them have fun but he’s also the one who tries to insert himself into their planned activities for the day when they get together with May, Julie, and Flynn cause he thinks he fits in easy
Luke, Reggie, and Bobby are honorary Buckley Mercer’s. None of them can pinpoint when it happened but one day they heard Chimney and Maddie refer to all of them as ‘our kids’ and lost it completely. Sometimes they forget that they’re truly family until they come across a framed picture of all ten of them or when they see song lyrics stuck on the fridge with a post it note stuck to the front telling them how good it was. The concept of family is never clearer to them until those moments.
But family doesn’t stop there, it includes Julie and Flynn and May and the entire 118.
Whenever there’s no band practice or anything to do and they’re bored it’s almost certain that they’re at the 118 if everyone is on shift
They’re all just so supportive of each other
Then there’s the occasional day where no one has a shift, no one has practice, no one has any commitments
Those days are their favorites. Everyone shows up at Athena’s house and though she pretends to be surprised they all happen to be there at the same time, she welcomes them with open arms.
They talk and laugh and Luke brings along the acoustic and plays whatever they want him to. He’s been known to learn songs just for them. They sit in the backyard and have the time of their life.
It’s those nights when none of them can remember anything other than that feeling of being really truly happy. There’s no fear or anxiety or worry. There’s just them, their family, and the feeling of being happy
#this is soft but don't be fooled#the version with just Alex is gonna be...a lot of angst#comfort yes but also angst#jatp#911#buckley mercer universe#alex mercer#maddie buckley#evan buckley#chimney han#albert han#more tags that i'll add later#HARLS I LOVE YOU

Comics this week (3/10/2021)?
cheerfullynihilistic said: Comics this week (03/10/21)??
adudewholikescomicsandotherstuff said: This week’s comics?
Anonymous said: Comics?
Anonymous said: 3/10 NCBD?
Non-Stop Spider-Man #1: The lead story was fun, the backup was dopey, I’ll give it another issue or two to see where it goes.
The Immortal Hulk #44: While it was too late for this week I’ve taken Hulk off my pull list, so the store won’t order any copies specifically for me and therefore my future purchase of the book won’t support Joe Bennett’s presence, just the store. This issue is typical of some of the books’ weaker installments of the last year or so - feels like well-done regular superhero comics instead of Immortal Hulk - but those last couple pages bring it back around.
Daredevil #28: Holy cow, those King In Black issues actually mattered. God this book is still so fuckin’ good in so many ways, everything every dumbass street-level superhero ‘deconstruction’ wants to be when it grows up.
Children of the Atom #1: Sucks real bad! This weird combo of ‘hip new young Marvel heroes!’ trappings and soulless X-Men lifer comics execution that feels certain to appeal to neither group.
Eternals #3: Of the listed Deviants I imagine I’d relate most to Annoyed Veug.
Commanders in Crisis #6: While I remain without the ability to weigh in on this objectively, this is the issue that to date most feels like it lives up to the promises of the series premiere.
The Wrong Earth: Night & Day #3: Little disappointed personally with the reveal of what the third world is - I assumed it was going to be more of a straight take ‘modern’ version to the other two’s flavors of throwbacks - but this series still rules. And that ending.
Home Sick Pilots #4: Okay, I think I can follow what’s happening at this point, still enjoying it.
Proctor Valley Road #1: I review these books in the order I present them to my dad since he likes DC/Marvel/Other to each be lumped together, but make no mistake: this is the last of the three Morrison books to read this week, because this is what comes next for them. A return to their roots - 70s kids way into music and dealing with the weird, girls adventure stories of the kind they apparently grew up reading - this feels like a refinement of their mid/late-00s Vertigo work in the same way they’ve been iterating on their superhero material for decades. The horror is sold excellently, whether by their own efforts or thanks to cowriter Alex Child this is their most fluid, ‘real’-sounding dialogue perhaps ever, and Franquiz with Bonvillain are instantly among their all-time best collaborators, perfectly capturing the shifting tone and character acting necessary to best put Morrison’s big ideas over in a way a number of their collaborators haven’t lived up to over the years (and speaking of the visuals, Jim Campbell does the lord’s work with that lettering trick near the end). Ritesh Babu and Sean Dillon have a lot more to say about the book and how it already acts as a darker, more honest take on your Stranger Things and the like as a commentary on its times, but I’m already loving to see this particular return down to Earth for Morrison and company and I’m glad to hear this is selling really well compared to their previous indie work.
Dead Dog’s Bite #1: This actually came out last week, but Ritesh recommended it so I figured it might be worth a look. A so far intensely low-key missing persons mystery with a touch of surreality around its edges, this already looks to be the best “look! A nine-panel grid! Fancy!” comic since Mister Miracle, really lived-in and emotional for as little happens in this debut. Very curious where it’s going.
Rorschach #6: I continue to like it.
Batman: Urban Legends #1: Glory be, a good Jason Todd comic - at last, you noble stubborn weirdoes living off of like six nonconsecutive panels all these years, you may lay down your burden. Not all you’d necessarily hope from Zdarsky tackling Gotham after what he’s been doing with Daredevil but rock-solid work regardless; the Harley story is fine, Outsiders is a letdown after Thomas’s shockingly good showing for them in Future State but it’s still fine, and the Grifter stuff is fun.
The Joker #1: I thought the advertised ‘a Joker story from Gordon’s POV’ angle was an interesting one even if I was concerned this book would in practice be pure editorial mandate, but in reality? Tynion has managed to pull the wool over DC’s eyes and do a full-on Jim Gordon book (one predicated with him being off the force to make it reasonably comfortable read in 2021) with Joker as the barest of pretexts to get it out the door and selling for as long as he wants to continue it. He even said in interviews that when the book was first pitched to him that his response was that a Joker solo book was a dumb unworkable idea until he had an idea for a ‘different way to approach it’, he knows exactly what he’s doing and I salute him. And it’s a darn good Gordon book even if the Punchline backup is predictably tepid, I’m in the tank for Gotham’s perpetual whipping boy dealing with weird noir international crime with Joker sort of hanging around in the background menacingly to justify the nominal premise.
Anonymous said: Hey, so I figure one random anon won’t change your mind, but like you I was disappointed by New Frontier’s immortal Wonder Woman, but I still got the new issue of Wonder Woman cause Wonder Woman at Valhalla still sounds great and I actually liked it! I think I’m gonna get at least the next issue, so there’s at least one recommendation for it
Wonder Woman #770: This combined with the store still putting it in my pile prompted me to give it a try after all, and whether because something here clicks better or if they’re simply not trying so hard without the pressure of doing a ‘final’ story for Diana, Cloonan and Conrad do in fact do substantially better on the main book than they did with Immortal Wonder Woman. Some fun, some fights, some mythology and intrigue, gorgeous landscapes and generous servings of beefcake from Travis Moore - this isn’t going to be sweeping the Eisners, but this is as enjoyable as a Wonder Woman comic has been in a good long time. My only concern is that the joyousness on display here might dissipate somewhat once Diana fully returns to herself, but in the meantime this was a very pleasant surprise (especially with the the Young Diana backup by Bellaire, Ganucheau, Goode, and Carey).
Superman #29: PKJ’s Superman thus far has been a story of overcoming initial worries of mine - in this case, my concern that he’d have a bad Scott Snyder-ey case of “if you’ve read the interviews you’ve pretty much already heard the dialogue of the comic verbatim”. In practice here most of what he’s had to say about these issues are distilled down really succinctly and poignantly in the midst of a fun little upper-atmosphere adventure portending something grimmer, and while I know it didn’t click with everyone I thought Phil Hester’s work here was a perfect accompaniment. The Tales of Metropolis backup wasn’t nearly as enjoyable, but hints at some interesting worldbuilding I’m hopeful will pay off in the main run.
The Green Lantern Season Two #12: The final Grant Morrison DC comic. One of two anyway, but if the next story I discuss is their broader final (non-Klaus, hopefully) statement on the superhero subgenre and a bridge to what they’re doing next, this is the one that’s about being The Final Grant Morrison DC Comic. A mélange of pretty much all their other DC finales into a shamelessly self-reflective meditation on the limits of what they can accomplish in shared universe storytelling where Green Lantern saves the universe through collective action and then fucks off to do his own thing elsewhere while the kids take over the ongoings. Weird and kinda perfect, and if nothing else this series took Liam Sharp from “really? This dude is drawing the last ever Morrison DC ongoing?” to “HOLY FUCKING SHIT LIAM SHARP”.
(The panel folks blew up over I think can be read multiple ways, but not in a ‘it’s open to interpretation!’ way so much as the storytelling/framing being unclear. I personally read it as ‘this is what neighbor versus neighbor looks like now’ rather than ‘calling someone a TERF or a Nazi is as bad as anything the other side does’, because oldster and out of touch though they may be I can’t see Morrison seriously saying that, especially after coming out.)
Wonder Woman Earth One Volume 3: At long last, after a hideous misfire kicking the series off and a second installment best described as ‘well, at least it wasn’t the first one’, this while not without elements I want to see femme and nonbinary critics discuss critically lives up to what you want to see out of ‘Grant Morrison’s Wonder Woman’. Big utopian fiction breaking the typical boundaries of superhero stories with aplomb in implicit conversation with a ton of their previous work, a bridge from what they’ve done to what they’re doing next, it’s an imperfect (especially with Paquette’s art, which while gorgeous and majestic in the way this story demands really doesn’t living up to the ‘acting’ necessary here in a way thrown into sharp contrast by Franquiz in PVR) but shockingly passionate statement of intent - if the last two volumes felt like Morrison struggling to have something to say with Wonder Woman in the same way they did with Superman and Batman, this feels at the close like them at last finding in her a way to do everything left with the cape and tights crowd they wanted to but couldn’t manage anywhere else under the Big Two umbrella. Odd and lovely, a fine sendoff.

The Lady in the Black Leather (Ch 21)
Catch up here [chapter 20]
Aiden x Scarlett, Graham McTavish, Reader
You, Aiden & Scarlett visit for a while, then Graham shows up with a pretty bouquet of brightly colored daisies and mums with a big sunflower in the middle of it, and a tray with two coffee cups and a brown paper bag in the other hand. He had a ‘get well’ balloon also for you, which was tied to the vase of flowers.
You giggle and thank him for them. He grins and sets the flowers and balloon down on the windowsill next to the ones from Aiden and Scarlett.
He comes and gives you a little hug and kisses your forehead. “How’s my girl doin?” he asks.
You grin, “Don’t let Rich hear you say that!” you tease.
He grins, “Well, me and Gwen laid claim to ya before Rich did, so he’ll have to just deal with it.” He says cheekily, making you giggle. “So, how are ya doin?” he asks.
You shrug. “Tired, my leg hurts, and I’m hungry.” you reply and grin when he sets a bag on the table and hands you a french vanilla cappuccino from the tray.
“Well, breakfast is here now, so at least ya won’t be hungry anymore.” He chuckles. “Don’t they have ya on pain meds?” he asks you.
“Yeah, but I told the nurse I didn’t want them till I had some breakfast in me. I’ll get them in a bit.” You tell Graham.
Grinning, you dig into the bag, seeing pastries like what Todd has delivered each morning. You look up at Graham. “Where did you get these from? They look like the ones Todd has delivered each morning at the shop!” you ask.
He grins. “I got them from the pastry shop that he gets his from. They asked why his shop was closed and then saw the note Rich left on the door this morning. They said to tell ye and Todd that they wish ye both a speedy recovery!” he says with a smile
You grin and take a bite of a strawberry scone and let out a happy little groan. “I love these ones! These and the doughnuts with the icing and the strawberry or cherry fillings! OOOooohhh they are the BEST!” you giggle.
There’s a knock at the door and a young lady is standing at the door with two big bouquets of flowers. “Excuse me Miss, but are you Harley?” she asks.
You nod. “Yes.”
She comes in and tells you, “These are for you. Where would you like them?” She asks.
Your jaw drops. One bouquet is two dozen red and pink roses with baby’s breath and purple lavender filler. The other is a bouquet of 6 yellow roses, brightly colored fuji mums and daisies that were colored brightly with food coloring.
Scarlett gets up and takes the bouquet of red and pink roses. She sets it down on the table and looks for a card. “Aaahhh! Here it is!” she says and hands you the card.
You open it up and see it’s from Richard. “For the love of my life. You mean the world to me, Sweetheart. I hope these brighten your day. I’m thinking about you & know I love you more than anything in the universe! Xoxo – Rich”
You grin and show it to Graham, Aiden & Scarlett. They all smile, and Scarlett puts the card back on the plastic stand and Graham takes the bouquet and puts it on the windowsill next to the other ones.
The delivery gal hands Scarlett the other big bouquet and then heads out to do more deliveries after you thank her for bringing them up.
Scarlett digs around in the bouquet and finds another card. She hands it to you, and you open it up to see it is from the Police Department that Alex, Todd and Jack worked for. It said, “Heard what happened, wishing you a speedy recovery! Our thoughts and prayers are with you! – Inspector Kathleen Walsh & your friends at the NYPD 19th Precinct.”
You look at Graham and Scarlett in surprise. “The police department sent me flowers?” Graham chuckles. “Apparently so Sweetheart!”
You shake your head in disbelief. “Well, that was nice!” you state.
They all nod. Graham takes the flowers and puts them on the windowsill as well. “You’re getting quite the collection, Sweetie!” Scarlett teases you.
You grin. “They’re making my room smell nice, that’s for sure!” you say, grinning.
Your doctor knocks on the door casing and then steps in. He talks with you for a bit and checks the wounds on your leg after shooing everyone out into the hall.
He asks you about all the scars on your legs and you explain they go all the way up onto your crotch. You tell him that the ones on your legs were from your last three boyfriends you had before meeting Richard. And you tell him the ones on your crotch were from the ex-boyfriend, Ben, who shot you. You ask him to make a note of you telling him that to put in your medical file. That you don’t want anyone thinking it was Richard who gave you them. You explain you never had reported the abuse from your ex boyfriends because of fear since the ex-boyfriends had all threatened you that if you told they’d go after you and your family. He nods in understanding and makes a note of it in your file.
He tells you that he doesn’t want you walking on the leg for a few days, and that you may use the crutches ONLY to get from your bed to the restroom in your room and then back to your bed for now. You nod. He asks if you need any stronger pain meds and you shake your head.
“I’m due for them when the nurse comes back with them. I told her I wanted to wait to take them till I had some breakfast in me first.” You reply.
He nods and tells you he will check in with you tomorrow morning then and tells you to have a good day.
Your friends come back in after the Doctor leaves and they have another two bouquets. You roll your eyes and giggle. “Now who are these from?” you ask.
Graham sets a small oblong flowerpot on the table with Hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and crocuses on the table in front of you. You grin and take a deep breath. “Oooohhh! Those smell wonderful!!!” you pull the card off the flower pick and read it. It’s from Captain Angel L. Figueroa Jr. & the NYPD 1st precinct and says: “Wishing you a speedy recovery, Harley! Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you recover!”
“Awwww! That’s sweet!” you say and put the card back on the flower pick.
Scarlett takes the planter and puts in on the shelf by the sink so you can smell them when people open the door to enter and exit.
The other bouquet is pink and white stargazer lilies and hot pink roses and lighter pink carnations with some greens. You look at the card and see it’s from Lee Pace. It reads: “Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you and Phantom are doing well.”
“Oh! Those smell lovely too! It’s gonna smell like a flower shop in here!’ you giggle.
Graham and Aiden chuckle and Graham adds the flowers to your collection on the windowsill.
Scarlett looks at the time and nudges Aiden, who glances up at the clock and sees they need to get going to the studios. “We gotta get going, Harley. I gotta film some scenes this afternoon, and Scarlett’s gonna go check on the shop for you and Todd.” He tells you.
They both give you a hug and tell you they will see you later on. You wave goodbye and they head out.
The nurse comes in with your pain meds. “Are you ready for your meds, Harley?”
You nod and she gives them to you. You down them with your water and she makes a note in your chart on the hospital’s computer. Then she heads out after seeing if you needed anything.
You look at Graham and say, “Now what do we do?”
He chuckles. “Well, what would you like to do?”
You shrug. “I don’t know. Graham, can you tell me about your family? I don’t even know their names, you said your wife told you to tell me ‘welcome to the family’.” You said. “You must’ve been telling her about me.”
He chuckled. “Aye, Lass, I told her ‘bout you. How I met you, and how I was tryin’ to hook ya up with Rich. She wanted to see what ya looked like, so I sent her the pics I took.” He explained. “Didn’t want her worrying if the Papparazzi snuck photos of us when we all do stuff together.
Scarlet told me your parents died a few years ago and I mentioned it to Gwen… It was her idea, actually, to ‘adopt’ you, so to speak.” He giggled. Gwen is my wife. Our two daughters are Hope and Honor.” He tells you, “Honor was born in 2006 and Hope was born in 2012.” He says beaming with pride. “I’ll show you pics of them later.” He says. “They live in New Zealand where we have a house.” He tells you.
You look at him surprised. “I thought you were from Scotland, though?” you ask.
He chuckles. “I am, Lass, but I’ve lived all over the world. We decided to settle in New Zealand, though, after living there while we filmed The Hobbit.” He explained.
“Oh! I saw a lot of the bonus features on my Extended Edition DVD’s of the Hobbit. It looks absolutely wonderful! It’s on my bucket list of places to visit someday.” You tell him with a big grin.
He chuckles, “Well, Lass. I’m sure Rich wouldn’t bat an eye taking you to come visit us there. He loved it there as much as we did and considered buying property there, but he’s so busy with filming and such, he said he’d rather wait till he got older and started to slow down with work.” Graham tells you.
“Graham?” you ask.
“Yeah, Sweetheart?” he replies.
“I want to do something special for Rich, but I don’t know what to do. He doesn’t like to talk about himself, so trying to find out what kinds of things he likes, I’m finding is rather difficult. Do you think you could help me?” you ask. “I know he likes chocolate ice cream, wine, legos and reading. But that’s about it.”
Graham chuckles. “Yeah, he is an introvert and shy, so whenever people ask him personal questions, he tends to shy away from them.” He tells you. He gives you a few ideas of things Richard would like and suggests to just be observant, “You’ll learn more about him from just observing and listening, than from anything else, Lass.
He’s moody and grumpy sometimes, but don’t let it get to you. It’s just how he gets into characters he portrays. He’ll often take them home with him and struggle to let ‘em go. Maybe having you around will help ‘im with that, Lass.” Graham tells you.
“There’s so much I don’t know about the film industry.” You sigh. “I’ve never seen how one is made from start to finish. He asked if I’d come with him when he travels for the promotional stuff for the film too. I’ve never traveled very much tho. He said something about finding out the details for taking Phantom with too, so I’d feel safe.” You tell Graham.
Graham grins. “It would be nice for him to have ye with, Lass. I know I’d enjoy having you with us. My wife and kids don’t travel much with me. It’s such a long flight from New Zealand to the US and Europe that they don’t make it very often to join me for premieres. It’s a whirlwind of a time, and is exhausting, but it’s a lot of fun too. You get to meet a lot of people and just sit back, relax and talk about the film with interviewers. If you do come with, we’ll be sure ya are well taken care of.” He tells you.
You giggle and grin. “Graham, did you get my dress from Aiden’s? Don’t let Rich know anything about the dress. I don’t want him to see it or see me in it until he picks me up for the event! I want it to be a surprise!” you tell him.
He gives you a positively evil smirk and says, “Your wish, is my command, Sweetie. And yes, I picked it up from Aiden’s last night before I headed home. It’s in my closet in my bedroom, which he won’t dare go into. Scarlett said I should hang it up so it wouldn’t crease the velvet.” He tells you. “I’ll take ye to go have it altered to fit ye when they let ye outta here.” He says.
You grin and happily clap your hands. “I can’t wait!
Graham chuckles and rubs his beard, thinking.
“Graham, do you ever do Skype or Zoom or FaceTime your family? You’re always saying I remind you of your daughters.” You tell him. “I thought it would be nice to say hi to them and talk with them and your wife, if it was okay with you. I don’t know how the time differences work between there and here though.” You mention to him.
He glances up at the clock and you can see him working out the time differences in his head.
“Well, Lass, it’s about 1am there right now. Well, if ya can wait till around 3 or 4 pm our time this afternoon which should be able to give them time to get up and get ready, then we can give them a zoom call, we’ll say “Hi” and I’ll introduce ya to them!” he tells you.
“For now, though, what do ya want to do?” he asks. Phantom comes over and sniffs all the flowers on the windowsill and ‘wuffs’ at them.
“What? Don’t you like all my pretty flowers, Phantom?” you ask. He chuffs and comes walking over to your bedside. Graham smiles and gives him a good scratch. “Do ya need to go outside, Boy?” he asks.
Phantom gives a short yip and Graham stands up. “I’ll go take him out to do his business, then we’ll be right back, Sweetheart. Did someone take him out last night or this morning?” he asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe the officer had one of the nurses take Phantom out. You’d have to ask him.” You tell Graham.
He nods and clips the leash on Phantom after he adjusts the service jacket. They head out and Graham stops to talk with the officer. The officer tells him he had one of the nurses take Phantom outside when he needed to go to the bathroom, and she brought him right back up. He did say they played with the rope toy for a bit having a tug of war.
Graham chuckled. “All right. Well, we’ll be back in a bit.” He tells the officer.

Jack Kline-Supernatural
(In this Claire, Y/N and Jack (looks) are all 24 years old.)
"Look, twinny, Sam and Dean asked for my help, but I can't go, Jody and Alex need me here, so I want you to be there, instead of me and..." My sister said, looking over at me from her bed, I looked up from my book and shrugged.
"Why? I don't know them and I'm only helping you, with hunting, because I'm better at researching than you." I told her, closing my book and sitting up.
"Yeah, my very own Sam Winchester." She smiled bright as she packed a weapons bag.
"You know, I really hope this Sam Winchester is every bit as good as you make him out to be, because you compare me to him a hell of a lot." I told her as I began cleaning away my books.
"Sam is amazing, he's smart, funny and he looks out for Dean, the same way you look out for me. Y/N, you're everything to me that Sam is to Dean." She said as she walked over to me and gave me a hug.
"OK, Clare, you need to let go of me, so I can get going to meet your friends." I told her chuckling. She pulled away and took the books from my bed and placed them in the bag with all the weapon.
"OK, so in here, you have your books, guns, knives, iron, holy water and other things you could need. Here," she smiled handing me my bag. I took it and smiled.
"Can I change, I mean I'm in my PJ's" I laughed at her sudden rushing actions. She laughed and nodded, looking around and moving to sit on her bed.
I walked to my closet and pulled out some clothes and packed them in my bag before pulling out some clothes for my trip. I pulled on a pair of black ripped skinny jeans and a pair of black biker boots that had a bit of a heel to them. I grabbed an old 'Jack Daniel's' t-shirt. I left my hair in it's usual mess of blonde curls and pulled on a few bits of jewellery to piece the outfit together.
"OK, so you're meeting the boys..."
"At the address you gave me, I will call or text when I arrive and I will tell the boys hi when I see them." I smiled as I pulled on my leather jacket and grabbed my phone and keys.
"Y/N wait.." She called following after me as I left the room and walked down stairs where I found Alex and Patience setting up the table for dinner and Jody was bringing in food, pizza by the looks of it.
"You going then?" Jody asked as she handed me a slice of pizza.
"Yeah, she convinced me." I smiled pointing to Claire who smiled and shrugged.
"Y/N, you know about Cas, right?" Alex asked standing by Jody. I nodded and smiled.
"Yeah, Angel who lives in my dads body. I have seen photos and I know it's not him. Besides he may have paid a visit to me a while back, when Claire started hunting." I smiled sadly at her.
"What, why didn't you tell me, I..."
"He told me not to tell you, he said you wouldn't like it if you found out he had asked me to look after you." I chuckled throwing my arm around her shoulder.
"Fair enough," She laughed taking the Pizza from my hand.
"Right well, I best get going." I sighed putting my bag by my feet "Mama Jody, Alex and Patience, I'll be seeing when ever." I smiled giving each a hug,
"Claire Bear, stay safe, be good and keep these losers safe." I told her pulling her close.
"Look after yourself and tell Sam and Dean I said 'If you die in their care, I will kill them!" She joked.
"I will haunt there asses if they get me killed." I smiled pulling away and taking hold of my bag. "I promise, I will call you the second I get to the bunker." I reminded her. "Love ya Twinny." I called finally leaving the house.
I walked over to my bike, a black Harley Davidson I had rebuilt myself, and pulled my helmet on. I climbed on the bike, positioned my bag and I set off.
*Time skip to at the bunker*
I drove down the road, taking in my surroundings as the whipped passed me. I then spotted a small group of men, three to be exact. I road towards them and parked up and cut the engine. As I took of my gloves and started to remove my helmet.
"Look bro, who ever you are keep going, we don't know you and we're waiting for someone." the older one said looking behind me.
I removed my helmet and all the men looked at me. I chuckled and nodded at him. "Yeah, I know, I'm Y/N Novak, I believe you know my twin sister, Claire." I told him, climbing off my bike and holding my hand out.
"Y/N, it's nice to meet you, I'm Sam.." Sam started but I interrupted him,
"Winchester, I know, Claire talks about you a lot." I smiled, shaking his hand. He looked at me confused so I chuckled and explained.
"Well, according to her, I'm you." I told him, "I left college to keep my sister out of trouble, I'm what she calls 'Sam smart' meaning I'm the one with the responsible, research brains." I joked making him laugh.
"And your Dean, Claire likes you. You're good with 'Kicking ass' but you're not one for thinking before you...fight." I continued, turning to face Dean who was eyeing up my bike. "You're both equally brilliant on your own, but you're stronger and safer together." I smiled.
"Where did you get the bike, how did you afford a bike like this?" Dean asked, walking passed me and began admiring my ride.
"Two years working in a diner and a book store, Then two years at a bar and hunting and the last year I spent working with Jody." I began, "I bought the frame when I turned 16 and gradually built the bike. Took a couple years, but now my baby drives like a dream." I finished.
"You built that?" Cas asked from behind Sam, I turned and smiled.
"Yeah, Claire and the girls didn't know about this stuff, so I was left to do it on my own and now...isn't she a beauty." I grinned proudly.
"By the way, it's nice to see you again Castiel." I smiled walking over to him and he smiled, pulling me into a quick hug.
"You know Cas?" Sam asked, watching the interaction between the two of us.
"I met with Y/N after I met Claire, I wanted to make sure Claire was OK while hunting and I asked Y/N to look out for her." Cas informed them. "She is a little more responsible then Claire."
"Well, OK then, Shall we head inside?" Sam asked, I nodded and smiled over at Dean.
"You want to ride it, don't you?" I asked looking at him, his eyes widened and he nodded, still not pulling his attention from the bike. "Here, bring her back in one piece." I told him throwing him my keys, which he caught with ease.
"Seriously?" He asked surprised.
"Sure, just know, if you harm her in anyway, I get your car." I threatened.
"Well, that's not happening." He mumbled.
"I hear you drive a Chevy Impala, What year?" I asked him, watching as he climbed on my bike.
"67." He answered.
"A Classic." I smiled as I turned and followed Sam as he lead me inside.
"So, What do you need my help with?" I asked looking around the place, taking in my surroundings.
We were stood in the middle of a huge room, filled wall to wall this books, photos and other cool stuff.
"We have a...let's say kid...that needs your help." Cas told me.
"OK, with what?"
"Fitting in to the world." Sam smiled. Just then a third voice spoke, pulling my attention to tall, handsome boy, about my age, who was stood by a door way.
"Who is this?" He asked.
"Jack, this is Y/N, hopefully she's here to help you become a little more...human." Sam said.
"Wait, he isn't human?" I asked looking the guy up and down.
He was tall, blonde and extremely attractive. He looked like any other human, except he looked...almost perfect, there were no flaws in his appearance, like he was made by god himself.
He watched me with the same amount for curiosity in his eyes.
"I am half angel, half human, my mother was human and my father is lucifer."
"Your dad's the devil! How...fun for you" I told him and looked over at Sam and Cas.
"So, what does he need help with, he seems OK to me." I shrugged.
"Well, he isn't as old as he looks, we've thought his the basics but I thought Claire, or in this case you could teach him how to be...young." Cas explained.
"Well, what do you want me to do, take in to a bar, get a tattoo he'll regret in ten years? I haven't exactly had the most normal young adult life Cas." I told him sitting down at a near by chair, Sam, Cas and Jack following suit.
"We're not asking you to be a reckless teen, just teach him how to be a normal human." Sam offered.
"How?" I asked.
"Just get the kid laid." Dean yelled as he walked into the room.
"Yeah, cos that will be heard, look at him, he's freaking gorgeous!" I laughed pointing over at Jack who turned his head to the side a little in confusion.
"OK, how about we start simple...TV." I told him taking his hand and leading to a hall then stopped, looking over at Sam who laughed and pointed me in the right direction.
I entered the room and sat Jack on the couch, grabbing the remote and sitting next to him.
"So, tell me, have you seen anything on TV yet?" I asked as I switched the TV on.
"I watched something about, a talking dog, a sponge who wears pants and something called...porn." He explained and I almost choked on thin air at his last answer.
"Why doesn't that surprise me with Dean around." I mumble and flicked through till I found nothing do I turned on Netflix that was set up and looked around.
"OK, so there is lots to watch on here, my suggestion, read the plot here and if it sounds interesting, watch it, if not, look at something else." I shrugged and handed him the remote. He nodded and concentrated on the TV, leaving me to sit quiet where I watched him curiously.
"So, how old are you really?" I asked curiously, he shrugged, keeping his eye on the screen as he flicked through.
"Close to a year now I guess." he told me, my eyes widened n surprise but kept quiet until I noticed the TV settle in to a channel. A channel playing porn I jumped up and grabbed the remote and quickly switching the channel over and turning to Jack who looked at me curiously.
"What was...?"
"Jack, we don't watch porn...not unless you are on your own." I told him and flicked the TV until Doctor Who's theme song played and I jumped around a little excited.
"OH, this one's good Jack. It's about and alien time traveller who travels through time and space, with a friend, fighting other aliens and saving planets." I explained as I took a seat next to him. He nodded and his attention turned to the TV and for a while we sat in silance and watch TV until my phone buzzed
I opened my app to see a text from Claire
Evil Twin : Hey, did you get there OK, is everything OK?
The Better Twin : Yeah I'm fine, sorry got put streight to work, I'm fine, the boys are fine and I made a new friend
Evil Twin: Oh..
The Better Twin: Yeah, his name is Jack, he's half human half angel and Cas asked me if I would help him act a little more...human
Evil Twin: Send a pic!!!
I turned my camera on a took a photo, with out him seeing and sent it to her
The Better Twin :
Evil Twin: Wow, Your new friend is hot!
The Better Twin: I KNOW!!
After a little while of texting Claire, we had watched a few episodes of Doctor Who and had set up a Instagram account for Jack who kept posting photo of the two of us and we went for a walk, where we took photos of this which we thought were pretty interesting.
I was sat, in a tree, looking over the trees when I spotted Sam walking, looking around slightly worried. My phone rang and I laughed a Sam looked up, panicked.
"Y/N what are you doing up there? Wheres Jack?" He asked and I pointed to a tree near by where Jack sat, smiled like a kid.
"Hi Sam!" He called, Sam laughed and shook his head
"Will you to get down here?" He ordered, I nodded and Jumped, not being to high in the tree, landing on my feet and smiled up at Sam who towered over me. Jack appeared next to me and we both smile wide as Sam rolled his eyes and turned, walking back towards the bunker.
"I thought you were teaching him about young adult life?" Sam quizzed and I nodded.
"I was, right J?" I asked he nodded.
"Yes, Y/N has introduced me to Doctor Who, she had helped me on Social Media called Instagram, she has showen me how to take photos to post on instagram and she was just showing me why she liked sitting in trees." Jack told him as we entered the bunker.
"you picked all that up in one day?" Sam asked surprised.
"Oh yes, Y/N/N is a very good teacher, I could listen to her all day." He smiled over at me, coursing me to blush a little.
"Really? Wait...Y/N/N?" He asked turning to face us.
"Yes, it is a nickname, Y/N says people give them to other people who they a close with, She is my friend, we are closer therefor, I gave her a nickname. Y/N/N" Jack explained "And she calls me J." He smiled,
"Yeah, he is in my phone under JackAttack though." I smiled as I sat down at the table when I noticed the pizza boxes. "We Having Pizza?" I asked and Sam nodded.
Jack sat next to me and smiled as I pulled open a box and squealed in excitement when I notice they had my favourite pizza toppings.
"I asked Jody what you'd want." Dean said as he walked in and handed Jack and I a beer.
"Oh thank god." I sighed as I opened the bottle and took a sip. I noticed Dean watching me and I smiled, pulling the bottle from my lips.
"I like a beer with my pizza." I shrugged as I picked up a slice and bit into the cheesy goodness humming at how good it was, making the boys all laugh before they tucked in.
* 2 Months Later *
I woke up and climbed out of bed, the cold hard floor sending shivers from me feet and up my back.
I'd been living with the boys for about two months now and it was starting to feel like home. I was always with them, hunting and joking about. I had spent a lot of time with Jack and about a month after I got here Jack asked me on a date and we've been dating ever since.
I grabbed my jacket from the hook and wrapped it around me, opening the door and walking to the kitchen. I spotted Sam and he chuckled as I shook my head and slumped into the chair next to him.
"Coffee?" He asked and I nodded
"Please." I spoke quietly, still half asleep.
"You and Jack have fun?" He asked as he placed a coffee in front of me and I shrugged.
"Yeah, ho told me he wanted to ride my back, so I let him, he's getting better." I told him as I took a sip of the hot coffee.
"So, when do you leave us?" He asked sitting down, I rose my eyebrows and frowned "Not that I'm bothered if you stay longer, it's been nice having you here." He quickly added, I laughed and shrugged.
"Well, I was gonna stick around for a while, I'm not done teaching Jack and..."
"I just thought you might be missing your sister." Sam intterupted.
"I do, but Jack and I are just started dating and I like being here and I've felt so at ease and useful, back at Jody's I'm not really all that useful and they never really let me help out on a hunt because Jody, Claire and Alex usually was enough." I explained, "Being here has made me a better hunter and you guys helped me out a lot."
"So, you want to stay?" I heard Dean ask from behind me, making me jump. I turned and shrugged.
"I don't know. I mean if I go back, it'll go back to the usual 'Research and stay behind' life while here I get to hunt, fight and have a real good time doing so." I told him, making him chuckle a little.
"Why don't you speak to Claire about it, maybe she can give you a better idea of what to do." Sam told me and I nodded.
"You're right, she'll tell me what to do." I laughed as I stood and began walking out when my phone buzzed. I looked to see a text from Jack and smiled.
Jackattack: BORED!!!
Y/N/N: Well, what do you want me to do about it?
JackAttack: you could come see me and watch some TV?
Y/N/N: Be in soon.
JackAttack: YEYYYYYY!!!!!!!!
I chuckled and stood from my seat, washing my cup and I walked towards where the bedrooms are. I stopped at Jack's room, next to mine, I knocked. Knowing he was awake I walked in and smiled as he looked up at me.
"I just finished the last of the Doctor who...I am now watching something called Sherlock." He informed me, pointing at the laptop that sat on his knee. I chuckled as I walked over and sat on his bed, curling into his side, his arm around me and watched with him, my head resting on his shoulder, for a while until there was a knock at the door and in walked Sam and Dean.
"Hey, look we have some visitors." Sam told me, a slight smile on his face. I lifted my head and looked over at the door and Dean smiled.
"Oh, yeah, you should get here quick and see what we're seeing." Dean called. I shook my head and put my head back on Jacks shoulder, going back to watching the screen.
"Well, what is going on here?" I heard a familiar voice and I looked over to see Claire and Alex stood smirking at me.
"OH MY GOD!" I yelled as I quickly, but carefully, climbed out of bed and ran over to my twin sister.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked pulled Alex into the hug too.
"Well, we were on a hunt close by and I figured why not come visit you and the boys, see what you were up to." She told me as she peeked over at Jack who sat and watched, curiously.
"and what have you been doing?" Alex asked as she waved over at Jack who smiled and waved back.
"More like who have you been doing?" Claire joked, smiling. I shook my head and turned to Jack.
"Jack, this is My sister Claire and our...other sister Alex." I smiled. Jack smiled and he waved.
"It's nice to meet you, I would get up to say hello, but I'm in my underwear and..."
"J, don't make the situation worse, they already think we're sleeping together." I told him and he looked over at my sister and Alex who where laughing.
"But we have, numerous times?" He questioned looking over at me confused.
"Wait, you what?" Sam asked, shocked.
"That's not what he ment you idiot." I told Sam and turned back to Jack. "J, honey she ment sleep together as in sex." I explained and he nodded.
"Yeah, no we've not done that" He nodded before turning back to his laptop. Sam let out a chuckle.
"So, Y/N, I know you want to talk to Claire and Alex so, I'll let you guys have a chat." He told me as he grabbed Deans shoulder.
"Do you wanna go to your room?" Claire asked looking a little worried and I shrugged.
"No, I'm fine here." I told her walking back to Jacks side. I climbed into the bed, letting my head fall to Jacks shoulder as I did. He shifted a little and turned to place a kiss on my head.
"So what's going on here?" Claire smirked. I shrugged and Jack spoke up.
"Y/N/N are dating, we have been for a month now." He informed her, not taking his eyes off the TV.
"So, Sam said you wanted to talk to us?" Alex questioned, sitting on the end of Jacks bed.
"Well..." I began and I looked up at Jack who smiled down at me.
"Look, I have a situation and I need your help to figure it out?"
"Ok, what's going on?" She asked
"Look, Claire, I love you, I do, but the past couple of months I had started thinking maybe I could stay here?" I told her, she stayed quiet for a second and I looked at her.
"Why?" she asked
"I just feel needed here, I get be apart of something I never did back with you guys and Jody." I told them. "I mean I love you guys and I loved doing all your research, but here I get to hunt, I get to be out in the field." I explained
"But...we're a team, we..."
"I know, that's why I needed to talk you guys about it." I told her and she nodded.
"Well, I think you should stay." She smiled.
"You do?" I asked a little surprised.
"I do." She smiled. "Y/N, you're a grown women, you can do what ever you want." She chuckled. "and if you're happy here I'm happy you're happy."
"Thanks." I smiled, leaning over, giving her a tight hug which Alex joined in on.
"What's going on?" Jack asked
"I'm staying here!" I smiled looking up at him.
"Really?" He asked, sounding both shocked and excited.
"Yeah, I've been thinking about it for a while." I told him and he smiled, ducking down and kissing my lips softly.
"Awwww!" Claire gushed.
"Sam, Dean, I'm staying here!" I shouted, knowing full well they were listening.
"Good, I was ready to kidnap you and tie you up until you said you would stay." Dean chuckled as he came into the room.
"Claire, you can stay here when ever you want." I told her and she nodded smiling.
"Good, Cos I'm tired." She laughed as she walked out Jacks room.
"Alex you're staying with Claire." Sam smiled pointing to the door behind him.
"IN Y/N'S ROOM!" I heard Claire shout from my room.
"I guess I'm staying here with you!" I chuckled to Jack who nodded.
"Fine by me" he smiled
"So, what are we doing today?" Sam asked and we then spent the next hour deciding on what we're going to do with our day, a day with my sisters, my boyfriend and my weird older brother like roommates.

Wednesday Roundup 25.9.2017
Okay, so I had another huge comic week, and looking forward this might be the last time that really happens for a while since at least three of these issues are here due to previous delays. and I’m trying pretty desperately to cut down on comics I’m subscribed to now. Which just emphasizes the fact that this week made it SO much more difficult to declare that because there was so much good.
... There was also some hilarious outrage on my part, too, so if you’re here for that you will not be disappointed.
Image’s Black Magick, DC’s Detective Comics, DC’s Harley Quinn and Batman, Marvel’s Immortal Iron Fists, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, DC’s Nightwing, Image’s Saga, IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dark Horse’s Zodiac Starfore: Cries of the Fire Prince
Image’s Black Magick (2015-present) #8 Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott
Have I mentioned lately how Nicola Scott may be the most gifted artist in the industry in a while? Not since last month? Well we are definitely well past due time!
Story: Things are ramping up as the Hammer’s members increase their numbers and keep close watch on Rowan while Rowan settles things with her partner only to be manipulated once again by the terrifying forces of these unknown entities with that creepy AF girl with the stitched up mouth. That is a lot of stuff being unpacked in one issue and yet the moving parts never feel like they’re incongruent or taking away from each other. Seeing Rowan’s familiar watching the Hammer members, seeing Rowan struggle to be more open with her partner, and then seeing her old demons (literally) beginning to come to her work and haunt her there (literally and figuratively) all feels like it moves perfectly together.
I just really wish we didn’t have to do a “gay scare” which is a bit disappointing from Rucka, honestly. Haha get it Rowan was worried that her partner was onto her for being a witch and he just was mad because he thought she wasn’t coming out to him and it’s just all a good laugh. Or at least I would be laughing if either Alex or Rowan were confirmed queer women and so it isn’t just that he’s well meaning but oblivious while... literally taking away the possibility of representation.
Maybe this will be corrected later in that very way! Who knows, I’ll be relieved if it is, but until then it feels like an unnecessary marring of what is otherwise a great story I’ve been enjoying.
Art: I mean... just look at it! Nicola Scott is... arguably the best artist in comics right now. Her work is phenomenal and nothing presents that fact more than just how expertly she manages the medium in almost any way and how it adapts based on the type of story she’s writing. It’s very special for an artist’s style to work as well in a bombastic, colorful superhero comic then turn around and hit the perfect contrast of noir and witchcraft narratives. And all of her characters are distinct and especially her variety of noses, it’s simply gorgeous.
Nicola Scott very well may be the best artist in the business right now and any comic company that doesn’t snatch her up for major titles is foolish, honestly.
DC’s Detective Comics (2016-present) #965 James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas
Well, it’s weird to say but if there was any issue for me to read before I took a short break from ‘Tec I am so glad it was this one. Which has all the makings of a backhanded compliment but we’ll see where I take it. Probably will seem like a backhanded compliment but I’m going to try to swing it toward positive.
Story: So I’ve been pretty sure I was going to drop ‘Tec for the upcoming storyline and then jump on again later for the next one, similar to how I did for the Monster Men crossover event, but I was really curious about Tim’s return and more specifically about the context of Tynion bringing Tim back which made me pretty excited for this comic. I love Tim Drake of old and reading this issue reinforced the fact that this current Tim Drake is the Tim of the 90s that I fell in love with -- the dork who loved Batman and Robin so much he put his life at risk to save the legacy of his heroes. And while this issue culminated mostly in a “slideshow” of Tim’s retconned retconned history bringing us back to the Tim origins from “A Lonely Place of Dying”, it actually felt really loving and refreshing to see the character I grew to love so much back in action.
I don’t care one bit about this Evil Future or Mister Oz or literally anything else going on right now. In fact I find that whole crossover tedious enough I dropped Superman a while back but I really did feel like I needed this reminder that we’re supposed to be reading this Rebirth Tim as the Tim we knew and cared about in the past. And that made this issue on its own worthwhile to me.
Art: Eddy Barrows is an excellent artist, through and through. The coloring’s fantastic, the art itself dynamic. Even with a familiar storyline and setup that we’ve all read before, he manages to find ways to make it read as unique and new through subversive angles and set ups. I really enjoyed his take on everything from Tim’s past. But even great artists sometimes fail the Batmanequin challenge. Which is, can anyone tell who the Batboys are apart from each other when they’re all the same age. The answer is no. His Tim looks identical to his Bruce to his Jason to his Dick and most of the time to his Damian and we’ve really got to change that at some point or else there will be a singularity of Batboys and we will all be sucked into an artistic blackhole and not in the fun way.
DC’s Harley Quinn and Batman (2017) #4 Ty Templeton, Rick Burchett
After this issue there’s only one issue left and in all honesty.... it’s about time we had some real emotional direction actually driving this comic because I’ve been asking for the last few issues “where is any of this going”. And since I all but refuse to watch the animated movie sharing a similar name, it’s that much more confusing for me trying to figure out what exactly this is all culminating in.
Story: Like I said, we’re finally getting some real tension in this issue as we have Harley confronting Ivy, it becoming more and more obvious that Ivy has a genuine problem with rejecting her own humanity for the sake of becoming as much of a plant as possible, and we also get that emotional catharsis of Ivy at least somewhat confessing that Harley is the only person she cares about. And it’s obviously a deep and intimate form of caring. She’s pained by the potential of Harley’s rejection and offended at the assumption that Harley would think of herself as anything less than her partner. But this comic, like all of comic canon, just refuses to give us THE WORDS. I’m so tired of partner being emphasized instead of girlfriend. I’m tired of cared being acceptable substitution for love. And I’m REALLY tired of Harley and Ivy only being portrayed as sexy and into each other in a way that’s meant to be attractive to guys. I’m not a guy. I’m a woman who likes other women. And I would like for this relationship, if it’s to be real on any level, be treated respectfully and given canonicity. Maybe we’ll get that next issue. I’m hoping, but since next issue is the last I’m not exactly expecting much.
Dick and Bruce are... still fun? I guess. It’s not really their story and I’m not sure why Batman’s even in the title at this point. His addition to this story culminates in a “not really”
Art: I gave Rick Burchett’s first two issues a hard time, especially compared to the guest artist for last issue, but this issue really had him stepping up his game and reminding us all why he’s been working with these characters and especially this style for the past twenty or more years. He really nails it... though it still has that edge of lacking refinement that we might see in something other than a digital first comic, the colors are really enhanced, the character and background art more detailed and controlled, and just overall this was a very pleasant looking and well laid out issue. Great work all around
Marvel’s Immortal Iron Fists (2017) #5 (of 6) Kaare Andrews, Afu Chan, Shelly Chen
We’re beginning to near an ending for this miniseries and I am growing an ominous, horrible feeling that I am desperately hoping is completely off base and unfounded outside of my constant apprehension of trusting comics too much. But we’ll get into that.
Story: As we left off last time, it was the culmination of all the storylines that we had seen building up in Immortal Iron Fists before then, Pei and her friends, the popularity drama that was the school dance, Danny’s feelings of responsibility and pride, the ten scrolls of Mara, and the strangely backward advice of the babysitter that Pei had been receiving throughout. And it all came down to a climactic battle with Danny and Pei finally at long last fighting side by side, both as the Immortal Iron Fist.
But suddenly there can only be.... one? And to save the world and inherit her responsibility as the Immortal Iron Fist, Pei had to choose whether or not she would take the dragon’s heart straight from Danny himself and use his chi to defeat Mara and his legion of demons. Which, of course, Pei refused and chose instead to sacrifice her own chi so that Danny could save the world.
This apparently erased Pei from reality and everyone’s memories in one solid swipe and sent her... to hell?? Where Brenda, who was in the storyline that brought Pei into the comics but has not been a factor through all of this miniseries, is a zombie champion fighter who saves Pei and her classmate that’s been in the coma because Mara was planning to use his body for his resurrection and also the popular girl, Danny’s girlfriend for an issue, an the babysitter are all daughters of Mara who are responsible for all this chaos.
And I genuinely feel like there’s been a lot of missed opportunities in the previous four issues that would have allowed this to be set up more. And that’s what is leading to the worries I mentioned in the opening. As far as I’ve seen, in Defenders or the solicits for Immortal Iron Fist, Pei has not been allowed to make much of an impact outside of Andrews’ runs. And.... I would really hate that a series that has sold e SO hard on Pei and on a new spin on Danny Rand to be a series that gives Marvel an easy out to erase those very things.
We have one issue left to go so I suppose we’ll have to wait and see in that regard.
Art: It’s still good art, still all-ages, but I’m starting to grow the opinion thanks to @secretlystephaniebrown and mine’s insightful talks that comis with cute art and lots of slapstick are pretty much utilizing a certain style to undermine dramatic writing or consequences in fear of being genuine. Or, in terms, bathos. And I really hope that’s not the intentions here because the relationship between Danny and Pei are genuinely sweet and good and if that’s the intention I really hate that comics don’t have the confidence to be dramatic fully in heart.
Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (2015-present) #23 Brandon Montclare, Natacha Bustos, Tamra Bonvillain
I’m worried about my favorite adorable team of superheroes. How can there be a Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur if there is no Devil Dinosaur? But also... is this the inevitable end? Are there not more adventures to come of our favorite world class genius and dinosaur? According to solicits there’s more for Lunella but is there more for the friendship that warmed our hearts? Are any of us truly ready to say goodbye?
Story: Legitimately I have no idea what’s going to happen next with this comic because it seems like Lunella is sidekick hunting for the next couple of issues, so the real question is how ready did this issue make us to move on from the loving friendship between a girl from Yancey Street and her bumbling dinosaur? Honestly, compared to the majority of the tight and loving writing of this series, it doesn’t feel like this conclusion was something we were very well prepared for. Sure, Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur are something we know of vaguely from other comics, but the anticlimax of the goodbye, and just how obvious it was that neither Lunella nor Devil were ready for it made the profound loneliness of this move feel so dissatisfying. Especially when Lunella returns to a doombot empty base instead of going home and emphasizes the strangeness even more.
I’m hopeful that this is set up, but I’m always on high alert for books like this that could easily be canceled by Marvel and worried about ending on a note I really wouldn’t want it to.
Art: As always, the art for this book is gorgeous and the coloring is fascinating and eye popping. The cooler hues this time around really helped with the more subdued and sadder tone of the comic which made the actions toward the end not only more disconcerting but plainly just more heartbreaking. It was an excellent choice and incredibly subtle but effective. This is a creative team that truly understands their crafts more than the vast majority of people in the industry today, and that’s saying something since quality is not exactly in short supply in recent years.
DC’s Nightwing (2016-present) Vol. 3: Nightwing Must Die Tim Seeley, Javier Fernandez, Chris Sotomayor
So I don’t.... really have any surprises in the works for those of you who follow my main blog at @renaroo who got to witness me liveblogging my experience reading this comic yesterday, but I’ll just put it definitively on the record here: Uh. Not a good effort here, guys. And this is officially the last thing written by Tim Seeley this gal is going to be picking up. Which I’m getting really tired of saying about writers who handle either one of my main two DC dudes -- Dick or Terry. Can we just... have anyone... care a little more? A bit?
Story: Okay so there’s about three plots going on at the same time during this comic and I’m going to address them in the three and then talk about the One Issue That Doesn’t Fit after. So four parts: The Robin Story, The Baby Story, and The Batman Story, and then The Good One. The way the plot is laid out you could argue that these three are interwoven enough to deserve going in a linear basis but I would argue no not really. Please take note that the title of this storyline according to the trade cover is “Nightwing Must Die”, a callback to the climax of Morrison’s run on the original Batman and Robin (2009-2011) series titled “Batman and Robin Must Die”. No, I’m not nerdy and observant, this thing is determined to hit you over the head with this allusion at every turn.
The Robin Story: Damian who has basically been forcefully emancipated from Bruce and sent to live across the country with the Teen Titans rather than ... idk just be sent to Gotham Academy which is a boarding school anyway, is pissed because internet forums have declared that the original Robin -- aka Dick -- is the best Robin and Damian sucks. Why Damian suddenly cares about 4Chan is beyond me but here we are. Now, despite there being an overly long and obnoxious storyline in Batman and Robin (2011-2015) called “War of the Robins” where Damian already went through this and beat up all his predecessors sans Dick because they have an actual relationship, or the entirety of “Robin: Son of Batman”, or the huge storyline “Robin Wars” where there were 30 Robins including Duke Thomas all over Gotham and something I didn’t pay attention to about the Court of Owls and Lincoln March -- this is a useless subplot that makes no sense for the characters or relationship that has already been established by Damian and Dick here. That’s what I’m saying.
Because this story isn’t interested in getting Damian right or doing him any service. This is dedicated to Dick in... about the worst way. And the weak motivation for getting Damian in Blüdhaven in order to reinact the events of “Batman and Robin Must Die” are so contrived that there’s really this feeling of “we need Damian in Blüdhaven come up with an excuse later” instead of it being something organic. For example: Damian is quick to bring up his concerns that Dick staying in Blüdhaven and starting a new life with Shawn is because he’s trying to become Batman of his “own franchise” and that he’s abandoning the rest of the family. This is really disconnected from the motivation of “who’s the best Robin” and would make more sense on a character level if Damian went to Blüdhaven of his own volition because of that concern to begin with. He feels pushed out of the family, and with Tim’s death he’s upset and surprised by Dick’s seeming abandonment of everyone else. Including him. The Robin with THE most abandonment issues this side of Jason Todd. Why not bring up something along the lines of “you haven’t been home since the funeral”. That would contrast the themes of family, Dick and Damian’s relationship, and Dick’s supposed worries about personal responsibility all at once.
This isn’t how that was handled and I am suspicious as to why. because we had to have that awful, ugly -- for me personally inexcusable -- panel where Dick tells Damian that he knows no one can balance being a superhero and having a secondary identity because Bruce sucks at it SO BAD that he now has the “burden” of being a father to a bunch of Batkids which he follows up with “And the one I think suffers the most from this is you, Damian. His only real son.”
So. You know. Fuck themes about nonconventional families and adoption I guess. Tim Seeley, go kick your own ass because you don’t even deserve the ass kicking from me.
It might seem like I’m being harsh but this one moment is SO hugely stupid and never brought up again or refuted later to the point that not only is it gross on a real world level, it actually REALLY weakens the theme of families and the such through the rest of the story specifically because there’s now this big ugly turd of a plot thread looming and never dealt with.
Professor Pyg and Doctor Hurt are back from Dick and Damian’s time as Batman and Robin and theyve made a bunch of disgusting Dollatrons specifically of Damian and Dick, or Robintron and Deathwing. This actually matters a lot less to the story than you might actually think because Robintron and Deathwing don’t have a relationship outside of being made to believe they’re Robin and Nightwing and one ultimately kills the other once they remember this. It’s symbolic because the Robintron was in Dick’s original Robin suit and Deathwing was in the New52 Nightwing suit do you get it do you get it do you get what they’re trying to say here it’s clever. Anyway.
The symbolism on a meta level is pretty on the nose “The New52 Dick killed the innocence of the old timey Golden Age Dick la da da” but in story we don’t really have Damian go through an arc or actually develop as a result of this matter and neither does Dick. Does Dick feel like his identity as Nightwing has killed his relationship with Damian? With his other family? With his idealistic self? It doesn’t... seem like it. Dick just kind of... punches Doctor Hurt after he decides that tragedy doesn’t define him... or something. It was from the hallucinations and like a whole issue later from Deathwing killing Robintron. And then Deathwing and Doctor Hurt kill each other by stabbing and falling rocks. Both ways in which villains have NEEEVVVEEERRRRR returned from the dead from before so I’m sure they’re gone forever.
So the Robin Storyline as a whole? it kinda comes to a conclusion with a genuinely nice two page spread where Dick and Damian talk about missing each other and missing their time as Batman and Robin. Dick even confesses something that would have brought all these storylines together rather nicely if it was done correctly: when Bruce came back to be Batman, Dick thought of staying as Batman, too in order to stay with Damian and train and raise him. But ultimately he thought, at the time, that he wasn’t old enough or ready enough to take that responsibility.
Dick was not ready to be a father but now he looks back at himself and who he is now and is ready for another go, with Damian or with his own children in the future. ... EXCEPT that reading of how the themes would play out are completely undermined and broken beyond repair by having Dick say that UNBELIEVABLE comment about how Damian is the only REAL son to Bruce and that the “Batfamily” aren’t a unit like that. Therefore the Robin Storyline doesn’t really have a conclusion.
Damian’s going to go back to San Francisco and still get pissed at /b/, there’s no family unit for anyone to reflect on, and.... the baby storyline:
The Baby Storyline: I could sum this up with one gif. I really could. I’m not going to but because I know this is only entertaining to hear me yell for an extent, have the gif anyway:
Now I’ll go into what actually bothered me about this storyline. Because this is tied to Dick’s relationship with Shawn and their pregnancy scare alone, and we see Dick freaking out at the possibility of the immense responsibility he may be stepping into, it actually genuinely had the potential to be a huge deal, a big game changer, something that actually would have developed both their characters and really questioned what they would be doing going forward with their lives. Would they both give up their costume lives? Would they move from Blüdhaven if they’re not defending the streets and it’s a terrible part of town? Would the baby have superheroes in its life from an early age?
It doesn’t matter because in what could probably be the weakest fake out ever, Shawn’s not pregnant she’s just... apparently not as regular as she once assumed. Which, hey, I hear that that happens fairly often for my fellow uterus havers and you know what? They’re young adults in their first serious relationship so I actually get the freakout from both of them.
But it doesn’t end up meaning anything other than Dick screams at Damian a few times that they have to save his “girlfriend AND baby” and for some reason Damian just goes with it because Damian of course has never before in his life ever shown signs of jealousy and concerns about conditional love.
The biggest problem beyond the fact that this plot’s resolution is a huge PSYCH spitting in everyone’s face is that... what... was the tie-in here?
Was it JUST the drama of “PHEWWWW dodged that bullet, now let’s go give Sandy a makeover”? I guess so.
Because if this was actually tied to the plots of the storyline it would have ended with at least one speech from Dick to Shawn, to his monologue, or to Damian that back when he returned to being Nightwing because he feared being too young and to unprepared to take responsibility for raising Damian, he had been wrong. He’s not ready because no one is, but he has a relationship with Damian that proves that he’s more than ready to be a father then and now. That he might not do it Bruce’s way because he didn’t like Bruce’s priorities, but he would find a way to balance all the aspects of his life and so can Shawn.
But that would require this story to... care about Shawn’s character more.
I actually like Shawn? I want to see more of her and I think there’s a lot of potential there, but at the end of this story outside of genuinely good moments, like the time with her and Deathwing where she tries to soothe him, she’s... just a damsel to be rescued? Just a possible babymomma for tension?
If she was more than that, then the plot would have given her more to do once she joined Dick and Damian. Like even ONE scene of her and Damian playing off of each other in the aftermath would have done wonders, made her more than just an attachment for the advancement of Dick’s character, but we get more development for Deathwing and Robintron than for the potential love of Dick’s life.
Kidding. DC would never let Babs and Dick have actual meaningful romances outside of each other anymore. Just like DC will never let them have meaningful romances with each other!
So this was a trip into a cul de sac of disappointment.
Also condoms condoms condoms condoms condoms boys and girls. Wrap it before you tap it.
Or be a lesbian. But that’s my answer for everything.
#Shawn Tsang deserves better #Hollatchagirl
The Batman Story: Oh, Bruce. How your shadow lingers large over all things that have nothing to do with you.
This is the “actual” plot. The one about Shawn being kidnapped and it all ending up being a plot by Professor Pyg and Doctor Hurt to relive the “Batman and Robin Must Die” storyline because....
Well. That’s the problem.
Doctor Hurt, as much as I really wasn’t a fan of that storyline under Morrison, served a very specific purpose. He was the antithesis to Dick when it came to Bruce’s legacy. Dick was his ward but also Bruce’s light and when he ascended to becoming Batman he took most of that with him and grew into the cape, so to speak. He embodied the detective work that Bruce taught him (finding the clues in the mantle that found the secret door), he embodied the friendship (taking his place as Batman on several superhero teams), and most importantly he embodied the head of the family. Alfred gave him advice, but Dick kept the Batfamily together as best he could, specifically by raising Damian as Bruce had raised him. And none of it was easy.
Doctor Hurt worked as a villain to Dick’s Batman because he embodied the worst of Bruce’s darkness. The strange and forgotten stories of the past, the psychological horror, the devilish iconography. Those things that were Gritty McBadBat about Bruce were never things that Dick was going to embody as Batman. And that’s why Doctor Hurt and him battled, basically over the heart of Damian: Robin, the partner, the son, the future of the cowl.
I didn’t like “Batman and Robin Must Die” because rather than have a huge statement about choosing the direction for Batman’s future by having Dick battle and defeat Doctor Hurt and his continuity drag, Morrison literally deus ex machina’d by having Bruce travel back through time and save Dick and Damian and basically take control immediately. It was such an anticlimax to both Dick and Damian’s arc even though Morrison tried to play it off as being the culmination of Dick and Damian and everyone else looking for Bruce plus Bruce’s “Return of Bruce Wayne” storyline. It’s messy and just feels like “whatever” at the end.
I don’t like it here because .... Dick’s not Batman. He and Damian aren’t partners. Neither of those things have been factors for either of those characters for six years now and, I hate to break it to everyone here, but at least one of them was “dead” for at least three of those years anyway.
Doctor Hurt is a Dick Grayson villain, but he is not a Nightwing villain. And the attempt to make him one here fell incredibly flat.
Also why was Professor Pyg there? Does Professor Pyg now know Dick and Damian’s secret identities too? Was that throw away line about him building dollatrons for Hurt meant to tell us that no only Hurt knows the identities? How is that much better? Why does everyone know Dick’s identity and he doesn’t care? Why doesn’t Damian care that the random Robintron knows his full name and who his father is? Why doesn’t Dick? If only Hurt knows then how did Pyg brainwash Robintron and Deathwing? If Pyg didn’t why did Hurt need Pyg to brainwash them for this since he apparently already knows how?
This story basically sacrificed all logic within the story itself to tie-in Dick’s time as Batman, which he doesn’t want to go back to and isn’t even tempted to go back to throughout the story, purely to justify having the Bat as part of the cover logo still. That’s it.
The Good One: There’s a one shot at the very end of this volume, #21, that’s definitely filler in between storylines but is actually the best thing in this entire volume. Probably the best of this run of Nightwing I’ve read and... apparently will ever read since I’ve paid my penance and given Seeley’s turn a chance. It’s a classic team up between Dick and Wally with a pretty inventive villain named “Timebomb”. It’s funny, has a lot of heart, the coloring isn’t muted garbage, and it features some high stakes without losing its sense of fun. It’s a good issue. I would actually implore fans of Dick and Wally to pick it up. It does a great service to their friendship.
Art: The art is good, the entire “Nightwing Must Die” part was colored in this muted, pasty way that basically made all backgrounds feel like they weren’t a part of the scenes and made all humans look dead or undead as it were to the point that Dick and Damian -- both canonically characters of color and occasionally colored to match it -- have the same pallor of the rotting corpse faces sewn onto Robintron and Deathwing.
The exception is the blue used for Nightwing’s costume and gear and for Shawn’s hair because.... idk. I guess we’re supposed to guess that they’re important to the comic or something.
No seriously, I love the art but they have to buy some more markers. I appreciate that you can only do so much when supplies are low but c’mon.
It’s a joke I know it’s a style choice I just don’t like the style.
But I emphasize again, the art is good. I just personally would go for the last issue’s coloring more than the main storyline’s.
Image’s Saga (2012-present) #47 Fiona Staples, Brian K. Vaughn
The real question comes to be... will Saga ever have a truly bad issue? I doubt it. Like at this point I’m not really sure what a bad Saga issue would even look like, but I think there’s absolutely no doubt that mediocre issues or issues that were more build up for what is to come can exist. Again, I give backhanded compliments here but I mean them... in the best way possible? Never mind, these cold opens are hard.
Story: We don’t progress too awfully much in this issue. The Will is captured by a vengeful victim’s wife who means to torture him by making him suffer and forcing him to see the very people he loves die.... until money gets involved and suddenly like everyone else she wants to capture Hazel and company to make the big starbucks. But, strangely for Saga, for the first time in this series we really don’t.... go anywhere with this issue outside of what’s taking place with the Will’s torture. There’s no scenes exploring what’s going on with the other groups, there’s no narration from future Hazel, we’re left with the Will, his past we haven’t seen yet, and his current circumstances.
Now this could make sense, the jumping around Will’s past is in place of jumping around the stars, and how could Hazel ever know what’s happening to the Will here, but it just all feels like a departure from the near omnipotence of Saga’s story before. And mostly it just feels like a setup for explaining how we get all the characters gathered for the next part of the story. And that’s.... not as cool as it could be.
It’s definitely a weaker entry for Saga overall, but that’s like saying a TV show with 100 episodes may have some that aren’t perfect.
Art: Fiona Staples’ art continues to be the star of the series, but perhaps because of the restraints of the setup, this isn’t the most visually creative or wildest design ideas she’s had in this series. The reveal of the shrew woman’s face felt.... anticlimactic compared to some of the truly out there examples of aliens unlike anything I’ve ever imagined before and it made the pause for the joke “my husband was nearly as beautiful as me” feel like... “have you seen what some of the other alien species look like????”
Likewise the backgrounds of both the flashbacks and of the room Will’s tortured in are not as wild as we’ve seen before, but I have to say the creative idea of the floating prism in space kind of makes up for it because that was creative and visually awing. Again, much like the story itself, the art only suffers because in comparison to the rest of Saga I’m only kind of blown away and not totally blown away.
IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2011-present) #74 Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Cory Smith, Ronda Pattison
Man we are just in the forest for transitions in storylines right now. Nothing is bad but nothing is standing out and I was expecting much the same with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles considering that we’re on Part II of the Trial of Kraang, but you know, it wouldn’t be TMNT if they weren’t continuing to surprise me.
Story: So this is a court drama because if there’s one thing that TMNT is dedicated to it is DOING ALL OF THE THINGS and apparently court drama hadn’t been checkmarked yet so here we are. And as someone who really genuinely likes the minutia of continuity and rules and regulations of different worlds and the way laws work in different universes, I found things fairly compelling. Not the least of which because of the smart use of characters and how they fit into their roles -- especially Donny and Professor Honeycutt both working as the prosecution. Don, after all, is the sci-fi heart of TMNT and him being in the thick of this as Kraang is the most “his” of their roster of villains makes perfect sense.
We mostly hit the same beats you’d expect from a court drama -- an unfavorable judge, slimy defense attorney making things hard for our prosecutors, the prosecutors pull a surprise key witness, and all in the background we have the unraveling of victims and friends trying to deal with the uncertainty of the situation while also.... fighting an interdimensional alien war. Hm. Okay so that last part is pure TMNT shenanigans but the drama of the story is really structured and punctual.
Which.... basically means that this issue is something like 80% dialogue with little tiny bits of action to give the other three turtles and their friends something to do while Don and Honeycutt hold down the fort. And if you’re prepared for that going in, you’ll probably find the case as interesting and the way facts are being retold and manipulated fascinating, but if you’re not then it’s probably going to be a bit of a slog compared to the ninja action you’re usually used to.
Art: TMNT’s art is always so shockingly good that it’s hard to comment on anymore. I really like how varied and interesting alien designs are with people not afraid to be gross by “human standards” when making things. And I like that the turtles manage to be simple so that they stand out in every setting without feeling out of place, and still have enough variation and ranges of emotions that there’s no confusing them with each other when the masks are off. It’s very good art and that should always be applauded.
Dark Horse’s Zodiac Starforce: Cries of the Fire Prince (2017) #2 Kevin Panetta, Paulina Ganucheau, Sarah Stern
I have been on the edge of my seet for a few months now, waiting for news on when the next Zodiac Starforce was going to be coming out and, at long last, the answer came. It was today! And there was much rejoicing. From me. Because I’ve absolutely fallen for this team book.
Story: We learn more about the titular Fire Prince and honestly that’s where a lot of my apprehensions come into play. In the original comic series, the Starforce was comedic at times but its drama was never undercut by it. Relationships were taken seriously and the threat to the girls was certainly serious, particularly from their own goddess and from Cimmeria. So when the first half of this issue was spent with the Fire Prince and making his powers known but also having him laughably dance around and prove to be a bit of a sadsack and not even comparable to the last threat of Cimmeria -- having been imprisoned and shamed by her himself -- it was a little worrisome. The threat after a huge battle like last time shouldn’t really be followed up by something we’re directly told is lesser. And that fed right into the lesser fights too, with Savannah undercutting Alice’s threat by having to make a joke of why they were fighting and remind her of the fact that she even was a threat to the Starforce to begin with. I know I’m throwing this word around a lot lately but it feels like bathos -- like fearing the sincerity of the drama so going for a joke instead. And that wasn’t something I really remember happening in the previous volume.
That all said, the one thing always played straight and the risk that is never dampened is honestly the one that remains the most important overall, and that’s the relationships between the girls themselves. Lily and Savannah’s romance and Savannah’s obviously very supportive mother, Molly and Emma’s close friendship, everyone’s concern for Kim -- it’s all great stuff and taken seriously throughout which is why I still have a lot of hope and expectations for this series. It’s just so nice to see a book that’s so supportive and intent on emphasizing the importance of female relationships.
Art: The art for Zodiac Starforce is beautiful and popping, but it also has a very serious control of its style so as to not be cartoonish beyond the point of feeling the danger or concern for things within the story. Even so, there were a few things that felt off model this time around. It’s mostly nitpicking, but there was something different about the way Emma’s hair was drawn, specifically when she was Gemini, and there were a few times where Alice and her goons seemed to look very different from how I remembered them. but overall I can’t emphasize enough that it’s a beautiful book and really does capture the feeling of being a Western Magical Girl team story.
There was a lot of good this week in a lot of different ways but when I think of what I enjoyed the most I have to absolutely give it to Black Magick. This book captures a unique style and tone of two things I sincerely love -- noir and witchcraft -- and is really doing something special with them in the modern age. And those are the kind of daring choices -- much like doing a mostly black-and-white comic when almost all comics stick to high definition coloring -- that really capture my attention and help any book stand out in a given week. So that absolutely must be my Pick of the Week, even with some of my harsher criticisms sent its way.
And, once more, I am in a bit of a financial crunch for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being the medical bills I’m paying for my dog, Eve, who experienced a catastrophic dog fight and underwent surgery recently. On top of that, I have exactly a month and a half to pack up everything I own and move halfway across the country again which is not helping those financial crunches I mentioned before either.

missed opportunity - (Thomas Jefferson x reader x Alexander Hamilton)
summary : Alex fucks up his one chance with you and you run into the arms of his v attractive nemesis.
warnings - mentions of sex, implied smut, cussing, lots of angst, anxiety related things, and Alex/Thomas being dumbasses
pronouns : she/her
a/n - I’m distractin myself from being unable to write the third part of the bus fic !!!!1!1!! also I love angst way too much. I’m in a relationship. this is unhealthy.
a/n pt. 2 - anyways this is after i wrote this- this had been in my drafts for three weeks ugh. im not making a part two to this. chaptered fics give me anxiety. the third fic of the bus fic is going to be the last one. sorry guys, im choosing my mental health over my fics. :/
you sipped the lemonade-cranberry concoction you had made and watched your best friend from the distance. he had invited you to this party as his ‘date’. in his words, “not like a date-date but like a date.” when he looks at your confused glare, he cleared his throat, let out an exasperated sigh, and explained.
“I can’t go alone to the ball, otherwise Jefferson will never let me hear the end of it. I procrastinated asking someone out so you’re my last choice- I just need you to come and be my…” his hand fluttered in the air as he searched for a word.
“arm candy?” you supplied, laughing.
“yes! I mean no! I just need you to come! please!” he begged, and got down to his knees as he shook your legs.
“I’ll owe you twenty favors!” he cries. you raised an eyebrow. your friendship was based on favors. not like that, but because trust was important between you two, and that if he says he owed you a favor, you were free to call upon it for anything, at anytime. his best friends funeral? too bad, gotta unclog my toilet. obviously you weren’t that cruel, but you did embarrass him. once, you had made him walk around in a Harley Quinn-esque crop top that read “daddy’s girl” when he owed you a favor for bringing him INDIAN takeout.
“know what your getting into hamilton” you laughed, and got up to go change, since the party was in two hours.
You walk down the stairs, on your phone, not noticing Alex’s jaw drop. you wore a simple black dress that cut off at your knees and had a gorgeous lace pattern behind. small blue jewels encrusted the edges of the lace trimming. your makeup, again, simple but elegant. a basic navy smokey eye with a dark blue eyeliner and dark purple lipstick was just enough to an accent to set everything off. god, you looked so beautiful right now, he could just kiss you right now.
“you look… amazing.” alex finally got out.
“huh?” you looked up from your phone, and it was your turn to gasp. he was wearing a very fitted suit, accentuating his body, and a little dark blue accent on each piece of clothing.
“so… we matched?” you laugh. he chuckles nervously. “hey, you look great.” you linked his arm into yours and grabbed your clutch, slipping into your heels.
“let’s do this thing.”
now back to your dilemma. you knew it would be a boring night, but you didn’t know it would be this kind of boring. you had promised to stay sober, but watching Alex flirt with every other person here was making it hard. you felt a pressure on the other side of the velvet couch and turned. Thomas Jefferson, the man Alex hated more than anything, sat next to you. a bitter taste filled your mouth. he had never met you before, but that didn’t stop your dislike for him and his antics.
“where’s your date?” he asked, amused at your scowl.
“still here.” you said. you couldn’t have made your plea for him to leave more clearer, but that only made him want to stay more.
“but not enchanting a beautiful lady such as yourself. I assume, if there really is a date, that he ran to the bathroom in fear of embarrassing himself in front of someone as stunning as you.” your anger didn’t help the slight blush that started to creep up your cheeks. you thanked GOD for this green lighting that made it hard to notice. but nevertheless, a smirk played on Thomas’ lips.
“may I know your name?” he asks smugly, scooting closer to you. you roll your eyes.
“ok, I like the mysterious kind of hard to get thing youre doing here.” he laughs, and that’s when you get up.
“ok listen” you spit, “no means no. I am not in a mood to be hit on by some guy while I watch the LOVE of my goddamn life basically fuck another girl on the counter.” you were seething, referring to when Alex started to make out with someone, Maria you think, in the corner. you couldnt slut shame her- she was just into a very attractive person, just like you were.
Thomas’ gaze softened. he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as he peered at his shoes.
“I-uh- im sorry.” he mumbles. your eyebrows raise in surprise.
“are you now?” you ask, your turn to be amused. he looks up at you, regaining his usual composure.
“how about I make it up to you with a drink? you can forget about him for as long as I’m with you.” he smiles, and grabs your hand. you glance over to Alex, his lips still attached to some girl, this time someone else. your shrug, maybe it would be good to forget about Alex for a little bit.
“let’s head out of here.”
plot twist. Thomas Jefferson wasn’t that bad of a fuck boy. sure, he was flirty, and sure, he knew his way around words, but when you labeled it as part of his charm and started to notice other things about him (e.g: his smile when you made a joke, the nervous ticks like running his hand through his hair or bouncing his knee, his favorite drink being fancy old whiskey you couldn’t pronounce, and the fact that he had five dogs), he wasn’t that bad. but as the drinks poured in and the night went on, he went from not that bad to hot as hell.
so when he leaned in to plant a kiss on your cheek, you pulled his lips to yours and started to make out with him. none of you ‘immediately sobered up’, but you did find yourself thinking clearly. or feeling clearly was a batter word. everything about him was made more aware. his stubble, his lips, his skin.
that’s when Alex walked in. to be fair, you weren’t that drunk. but you were drunk enough to consider Thomas as a viable fuck option. but Alex had to come and fuck everything up. he had seen you two leave the venue, but when you hadn’t picked up your phone, he got suspicious. he knew you were both lazy as hell so searched the nearest bars and finally came upon this one, where the first things you could notice as you walked in would be the pair of people making out at the bar.
“y/n!” Alex angrily yelled. you pulled back and looked at alex, the grin plastered on your face replaced with a frown.
“you left! I got scared! you weren’t answering your texts!” he started to scream at you. Thomas rubbed his head as he slowly started to peace things together.
“wait… this is your date? the guy you’re in-” you put your hand over his mouth and he shut up.
“come on. we’re leaving.” Alex said, glaring at Thomas as he dragged your hand.
“but I was having so much funnnnn” you whined. Alex laughed dryly, roughly grabbing your arm and pulling you out of the bar. he shoved you into the car, muttering under his breath. he closed the door quickly and stood outside of the car door. he ran his hand through his hair.
“fuck.” he whispered. the image of your lips on jefferson’s was burned into his mind. “FUCK!” he yelled at no one in particular. he took a deep breath, and sat in the front seat. he fixed the mirror and looked directly at you.
“how drunk are you?” he asked you, as he started up the car and began to drive. you looked him dead in the eye and started to laugh.
“not that much, actually” you chuckle out. “wow, jefferson kisses great, even half-drunk” you were amused. you didn’t notice the deathly grip alex had on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched, his eyes on the road. soon, you pulled up to his house. before you could even enter the house, you were pushed up against the door.
“do you know how much it fucked me up?” he growls against your neck. a deep kiss on your neck made you shiver and moan in pleasure. desperate, sloppy kisses started to line your collarbone. another moan escapes your lips, until you realize who it is and why he’s doing it. you push him off your body and force your eyes to his.
“alex… i-” you start, but were cut off by his words.
“shit! shit-” he rambles, running his hand through his hair and pacing in circles.
you place a hand on his chest gently. “Alex, just stop, listen.” he looks up at you.
“god knows I’ve wanted this. I’ve wanted this for so long but i will not” you glare at him pointedly, “be used as leverage for this pissing contest you have between jefferson.”
he looks at you, his mouth agape. fire raged behind his eyes. “thats not at all-” you cut him off again. “no- no i don’t want to fucking hear it. im leaving- this is too much.” “you’re drunk.” he stated.
“im not, but whats your point?”
“you need a ride. i-ill drive you.”
“what? after all of this?” you laugh.
“i just need to make sure you get home safe. ill call john- anyone- i just don’t want you going home with a stranger.” he begs, making you roll your eyes.
“sure, fine, whatever. call laf. i trust him” you waved it away and walked into the kitchen. it was an awkward silence, waiting for Lafeyette. Alex went upstairs to his roo, muttering a ‘goodnight’. you walked around the downstairs floor. lots of memories brimmed at your minds edges, threatening to form tears. alex, of all people? you knew he was career-obsessed, but this was a goddamn low blow. a text from laf brought you out of your thoughts. you texted him a quick ok and walked outside. lafayette’s car stood there, and a solemn-looking french boy stood in front of it.
“we need to talk.” was all he said, and led you into the car.
“is this about alex? did he ask you to talk to me?” you asked, once you were inside the car.
“what? no . um. theres something i need to tell you.” he says, his accent thick. you knew it was only like this when he was nervous. his finger tapped against the steering wheel, and his knee bounced up and down.
“what is it?” you looked at him. he takes a deep breath.
“im moving back to france. my ma- she’s- she’s not well.” he breathes out. you look at him.
“laf- im so sorry.” you mutter out as a response. he starts to ramble on his french banging his steering wheel. you could only piece a few words from your limited french together but you knew enough to know that laf was not ok.
“lafayette!” you called out. he looked at you and took a deep breath. “i need to do something before i leave.” and he started to lean in. you thought he was going to kiss you, and your breath hitched in his throat. instead, he reached into the compartment and pulled out a picture of hercules.
“tell that godamn man that i am in love with him, ok?” you looked at him, confused. they were dating, everyone knew it.
“I don’t understand?” “im not coming back dammit! Je ne sais pas quoi faire. J'aime ma mère, mais je ne sais pas quoi faire. Je devrais vous laisser, mes meilleurs amis. Je t'aime tous aussi! I have a wife i left! a family i ran away from! i cant just come back! Im leaving y/n- fuck!” he yells, frustrated. you’ve reached your house at this point, crying out before stumbling out of the car. this was all so much. you ran to your room, crying into the pillows. then you got a text.
unknown number
hey, its thomas, just checking up to see if you’re ok. james gave me your number, alex dragged you off and i was a bit scared since he seemed mad. text me if you get this so i know youre ok! - t.jeff
you were tired, emotionally unstable, in denial. so maybe thats why you called him over. it started off with you spilling everything to him, ended in rough, angry, heated sex. maybe then you should have just left it at that. but you didn’t. he came back the next week then the week after that, then daily. alex began to notice the marks on his neck in the exact shape of those lips he had spent so long studying. you began to notice laf’s absence left a bigger dent in his life then he’d ever want to admit. you didn’t ever like him, oh god no, not like that. he was a brother to you when he first came to America. you were both immigrants to new york in one way or another, and you two formed a bond. with him you met alex, and with him you fell in love with alex. he was your support through all things alex-related, and now when you needed him most, he was just gone.
you had tried lafayette’s number for the eight time that day. im sorry, but the number you are trying to reach has been disconnected.
you knew this. you just didn’t want to admit it to yourself. his words burned into your mind. i cant just come back! Im leaving y/n! you were trying so hard to pretend that you were ok. thomas helped. a lot. what was originally a one night stand ended up becoming a relationship of sorts. it was complicated, messy, but it worked enough that you felt safe around him. he had convinced you to go and try to to talk to alexander. at first you were surprised, thinking he’d encourage the discourse between you two.
“i’m just sayin’ , whenever you get all worked up and angry at me, its usually about him.” he says, shrugging.
“well, thomas,” you glared pointedly at him “maybe sometimes you act dumb.”
he laughed, “just give him a chance. I don’t like seein’ my darlin’ angry. if he fucks up, ill always beat him up for ya.”
you rolled your eyes, eventually agreeing. which led you here, in front of alexander’s door. no matter what, you told yourself, you were not to remember how you used to feel about him. you sighed. used to, was the key word. you had thrown away every piece of love you had for him, mostly because you were dating thomas now. he didn’t even do anything that bad, sometimes you would reason. but you were stubborn, and you didn’t want to admit defeat. you brought your hand to door, but it swung open before your knuckles reached the wood.
“y/n” he breathed out. god, he looked bad. bags under his red eyes, hair an unkempt mess. a oversized hoodie was thrown over shoulders. his pants looked three weeks old. you shook your head.
“alexander, wear some damn deodorant” you laughed. for that moment, it was like the before. your head tiled back, alex’s eyes crinkled in joy. but then the laughter died down, and the aftermath of you leaving him downed on the both of you. the silence in the air hung around you. thick in its wake, alex’s lips opened up.
“im sorry.” was all he had to say, and tears from both of you started to spill. he fell into your arms, muttering ‘im sorry’ repeatedly. you were happy and sad, but then you remembered what Alex had done. you slowly shrugged him off your body.
“listen-” you started, but Alex cut you off.
“no you listen! ok, i know, how it may have seemed. I was not using for that so-called pissing contest. i was jealous. you, the woman i have been in love with for almost three years, almost hooked up with a man that i would kill if the opportunity arrived, without question.” he says, and brings his hand up to your cheek.
“what?” your eyes widened. they started to drift downwards, towards his lips, but you stopped yourself. for so long, you had wished to kiss him. and now the one chance you had, you fucked up. thomas was waiting for you at home, what would he say? you couldn’t do this.
“i-im sorry too. i have to go.” you ran towards the uber, and slammed the car door shut, you drove to the nearest exit, and stepped out. you muttered a quiet thanks and leftit was a deserted gas station, perfect. and you started scream. crying, you slammed your fist unto the nearest pole, feeling pain prickle up your knuckles. you ran around, pushing everything in your midst. all your rage flew into the broken shards and splinters in front of you, and into the screams you let out. you broke down there, crying for about half an hour before a car pulled up. though puffy red eyes, you saw a worried thomas step out of the car. in his hand he held his phone, and rushed towards you.
“baby? are you ok? god, who did this?” he looked at your bloodied knuckles. love had made you crazy, you though to yourself, who would do this to themselves? thomas kissed your forehead and brought you into his car.
“ho-w did yo-ou find m-me?” you sniffle. he laughs and rubs your shoulder in comfort.
“find my iPhone baby.” he says softly. “i got scared when you didn’t pick up. i used find my iPhone and there you were. i got scared.” he repeated. you nodded at him.
“do you wanna tell me what happened?” he asks gently, letting you take your time. you shake your head. he nods.
“okay, can you at least answer one thing for me? can you do that darlin?”
you nod slowly.
“did alex hurt you in any form or wa-” “oh! oh god no! i- i just got really angry.”
“why?”
“i don’t know, not really. i come back to let alex apologize and instead he confesses that he’s been in love with me this whole time but im with you now and i don’t know-” you let out a sob. thomas’ eyebrows furrow. he carefully speaks the next words, already knowing the answer and knowing it would hurt both of you.
“do you- do you still love him?” he whispers. when you look up at him, eyes shining with vulnerability, thats all he needed to know. he looks away, and focus on the road. he didn’t need to deal with this. he dropped you off at your apartment and let you rest. tomorrow would be a whole different thing.

Batman: The Dark Prince Charming – Book One
Italian comics artist Enrico Marini dives into the Superhero genre in a big way with his take on the most popular hero of them all, and so far, he hasn’t changed much. His Batman and Catwoman are also in a solid relationship, much like the main series. So don’t go into this expecting a wild reimagining of the character.
The story concerns Joker kidnapping a young girl after the news reports that her mother is suing Bruce Wayne for child support, claiming that she is his daughter. Joker, having seemingly already put together that Bruce Wayne is Batman, targets her to get to his real objective. Batman wants to rescue her, and after running a DNA scan on one of the girl’s dolls, this case becomes personal.
Despite being fresh to superheroes, and coming from a comics culture where they aren’t as ubiquitous as they are here, Marini absolutely nails the heart of Batman’s cast – most impressively the Joker. Marini’s Joker is obviously influenced by Heath Ledger’s performance, borring the presumably fake child-abuse backstory, and a habit of killing henchmen mid-robbery; but also distills so many other versions of the character, maintaining the best parts. Marini’s Joker threatens the kidnapped girl with a knife, only to reveal it’s to cut into a pizza he ordered for the two of them. Of course, he also killed the delivery boy. He’s a Joker who throws Harley a big birthday party, but kills all but one of his other henchpeople when she doesn’t like her present. Actually, unlike most Jokers, Marini’s seemingly isn’t abusive towards Harley, which is a pleasant break from that sorta thing. This Joker is unpredictable and cruel, but he’s also very fun about it; exactly how Joker should be.
Unfortunately, the women in this story aren’t treated as well. While Harley isn’t abused, she’s depicted as way more cheesecake than usual, and Catwoman’s every other pose may as well be on a stripper pole. It’s not like these are huge departures or anything, but it seems like some of the messier parts of the characters taken a little further than usual, is all.
Also, the book is absolutely gorgeous. I don’t want to say it’s the sort of quality of art that’s rare in American superhero books because I’d feel like I’m insulting artists like Ferreyra, Alex Ross, Sean Gordon Murphy, Jeff Lemiere, Francis Manapul, and many other fantastic artists I currently greatly enjoy and admire; but Marini’s handpainted, realistic yet heavily stylized work is far from the house styles of the big two. There are panels I legit want to blow up and hang on my wall. And Marini’s lightly tweaked character designs, plus his new Batmobile, are simply sweet as hell, and I wish they would be used in more things. And his Gotham is brimming with gothic personality, and an insane verticality that dwarfs Batman in the best way.
So far, this story isn’t really anything new or novel, but it’s a damn excellent Batman story in its own right, and one worth picking up if you enjoy comic art.
Batman: White Knight #2
Jack Napier gives an impassioned testimony at his trial, declaring his innocence and putting the blame on Gotham’s police. He maintains that the authorities experimented on him, turning him into the Joker, so that they would have an excuse to demand bigger budgets from the taxpayers to fight a new breed of super-criminals. He says that the rich and powerful of Gotham have invested in crime to do what they’ve always done, make a profit off the suffering of the poor. And though Napier’s populist message has caught on with the poor and middle classes in Gotham, this isn’t a campaign he can lead alone, so he looks for allies.
His first stop, Harley Quinn. He goes to see her, only to find out that she has no love for Jack Napier, only loving the Joker. He then finds out that she’s not the original Harley. The first Harley – in the actual Harlequin outfit as opposed to the Suicide Squad inspired outfit of the new one – steps back in to accept Jack’s proposal, while explaining that she left after feeling neglected by the Joker in his obsession with Batman; and that in his maina, he never even realized she found a replacement. It’s actually a really smart take to explain how Harley has has such a drastic change in character recently.
Meanwhile, Bruce and Mr. Freeze test out their new cure for Nora. They first test it on some lab rats, but then Mr. Freeze tries it on himself. And while it successfully reverses his condition, it also rapidly ages him to make up for all the time he spent frozen.
Bruce later goes to some sort of rich people party/auction, where he’s horrified to learn that his friends have been profiting from Batman’s war on crime. He knocks out his friend and storms off. Now, this I really like. Murphy hasn’t just switched Batman and Joker’s roles as hero and villain; Bruce legitimately seems ignorant of the inequality that Batman’s worked in service of, and he hates it. I’m expecting we may even see Bruce approach Jack to assist address the problems that Batman and the police have caused through Gotham – but that still makes me question how Batman ended up in Arkham from the cold open of issue #1.
I really like how much effort Murphy has put into this story to make it much more than just a simple “what if?” tale. Just as last issue brought up the popular fan-thought experiment regarding whether Batman is to blame for his villains, this one weaves in the fan-discourse about how the collateral of Batman’s work really does seem to disproportionately land with the poor. Napier’s speech isn’t just a an exercise in populist rhetoric, but an actual well reasoned argument against Batman’s existence vis-a-vie his effect on inequality. And it’s one that fits as much for canon-Batman stories as this alternate-universe that Murphy has lovingly crafted for this story. If you’re not already reading this one, get on it.
Batman #34
Batman and Catwoman have their first post-engagement spat. Batman said that he’d “seen more” after Catwoman commented on there being “a lot” of something, and Catwoman took it as an insult, and Batman’s trying to explain he was just saying…oh and by the way they’re talking about the number of swordsmen surrounding them preparing to attack. Because that’s just how they do. King’s juxtaposition of the action with sitcom-esque dialogue isn’t the most original, but it’s really effective here in establishing that, for Batman and Catwoman, this is fairly typical. It continues through the issue, with the two also discussing whether Talia could be considered Bruce’s “Ex,” and lots of Bruce calling Catwoman pretty to deflect from accidentally saying something she’d consider rude.
Meanwhile, Damian and Dick track their father to the same entrance that he and Catwomen fought their way through last issue, but are stopped from following by Superman. Damian threatens to kill Clark with magic, but Clark reminds him that then Jon probably wouldn’t want to be friends anymore. Then Supes goes flying off to handle and alien invasion in Central City; and Dick and Damian decide to sit on the stoop and wait for Bruce to come out. It’s one of those scenes that works because it reminds you that Damian’s just a kid. A kid who can make a believable threat against Superman, but one you can’t take all that seriously because he’s just saying it because he’s steamed over his parents doing something in secret. So when Damian can’t get his way, he just pouts and sits down; and Dick, being the best big brother ever, waits with him.
The lighter tone of the issue changes almost instantly when Talia finally shows up at sundown. The palette of the issue switches from a yellow-orange to a red as the sun sets, ending with an early night-blue sky as Talia challenges Selina to a duel over Batman’s wounded body. The change is dramatic, but not sudden. Even once Talia is in-frame, she approaches slowly, taking about two pages before she starts fighting Batman, giving the sun time to fully set.
Jones’ inky style is still a perfect fit for this adventure, continuing to capture the feeling of the sun beating down on the characters by putting everything in high-contrast black against Bellaire’s yellows and reds.
We also find out in this last act of the issue that this isn’t some weird newlywed hazing ritual; but that Batman and Catwoman are actually looking for Holly Robinson, who killed the 237 people that a young Selina took the blame for, and they tracked her here. So, one question answered, at least one duel to the death to go before getting more.
Green Arrow #34
Oliver has some trouble adjusting to his mother having been alive, and being a prominent member of the Ninth Circle, the evil bank that he’s been trying to bring down for the past year. Moira tries to convince Ollie of the virtues of capitalism – that when the Queens do well, all of Seattle benefits, but Oliver won’t have it.
Instead, he helps Black Canary take down the Clock King, who has hacked into Star City’s smart infrastructure, and is causing every self-driving vehicle in the city to go crazy. Dinah stops a speeding train on it’s tracks by screaming at it hella loud, while Oliver finds and stops Clock King.
Meanwhile, Diggle helps Merlyn make a full recovery, and then tells him that his debt for Merlyn having saved his life some time ago has been paid. Merlyn feels differently.
And at the end of the issue, Oliver agrees to help Moira raid the sunken vaults of the Inferno, believing that even if everything she says is just some Ayn Rand bullshit, a little money would help him out with his murder trial, and also gather evidence more against the Ninth Circle to rescue his city.
This issue is a bit of a mess. The Clock King and Diggle stories both feel like filler to make the issue reach it’s page limit, and to distract that, during them, Oliver completely flip-flopped on helping out his mother.
Also, I’m not a fan of Stephen Byrne’s work on this book. It looks too…flash animation-y, characters look as though they were coated in confectioner’s glaze. It actually reminds me of some bad webcomics, which ain’t good. Also, Moira looks more like Felicia Hardy than a woman who should at least be in middle age. What happened to Ferreyra? Or Campbell?
Superman #34
As his worshippers beg him to lead their forces to take back Apokolips, Lex does the least Luthor thing ever and abdicates his godhood to the person their prophecy actually foretold – Superman. Did I miss something really big with Lex, or am I just supposed to believe that, after deciding to become a hero, he also just no longer has his character defining flaw? I don’t want to be one of those people who says comics should never change, but unless I missed something, this is a huge change of character. Even if he really is a hero now, that shouldn’t exclude him from being arrogant and striving for praise and adulation.
Meanwhile, Lois and Jon are also on Apokolips; and while Jon can just fly away from the people and hounds hunting them, Lois can’t, and finds herself taken by Granny Goodness’ Furies. But when their convoy is attacked by a giant, fire-breathing dredge worm, Lois picks up one of the fallen Furies’ guns and proves to Granny than she’s more than just another captured vermin.
While I continue to appreciate this book’s focus on Lois, it also puts her in a situation that doesn’t suit her strengths as a character. Lois is a reporter, she’s not Wonder Woman. I like that she’s able to defend herself, and that she’s not being damsel’d, but becoming a Fury feels just as out of character as Lex declining a throne.
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #6
J. Jonah Jameson cooks up a nice-looking lasagna to warm up his latest interview subject – Spider-Man! Of course, Spidey is only there for information that can help out his sister, but in exchange, he agrees to a no-holds-barred exclusive interview with the man who used to slander him for profit.
The interview doesn’t start off well, and quickly becomes a heated argument between the two on why Spider-Man wears a mask, and why Jameson hates him for it. The two trade verbal attacks about the other’s role in the creation of super-villains, destruction of property, and death, before just straight up calling each-other cowards and bullies.
If last issue suffered because it was too plot heavy to give room for characters to breathe, than this issue is an incredible course correction. Anything relevant to the plot of the arc is sidelined for the raw catharsis of Spider-Man and Jameson finally just letting everything out. And the issue ends up becoming a complete disrobing of Jameson as Spidey slowly digs into why he’s hung onto this grudge through becoming mayor, the death of everyone close to him, and getting fired from the Bugle. Like Zdarsky’s best issues, there’s more than a twinge of meloncholy through the issue, as he reveals how broken this character has been. That sorta thing has become his specialty, it seems – making jokey characters kinda depressing.
Walsh is the perfect artist for this issue. His style, much like Doc Shaner or Darwyn Cooke’s, evokes an older time in comics, with thick charcoal-y hatching and shading, and uneven outlines. Plus, no spaghetti webs! This is matched by Herring’s muted and watercolor-textured colors. The aged affect of the art is epitomized by a single flashback panel made to resemble Ditko’s original Spider-Man work; and it’s amazing how solid a throughline you can make from his style to Walsh’s.
It’s also scary impressive how much emotion he can draw out of Spider-Man’s mask, like…there’s seething anger in one panel that comes across through the mask despite any and all reason.
Black Bolt #7
Finally free from the prison, Black Bolt makes his way back to Earth, but not before a pit-stop to return Monsteroso to his home planet. He’s reckoning with the loss of his voice and the PTSD from his time in the prison. Also on board is Blinky, who has her own nightmares, only hers can manifest physically, and require Black Bolt to destroy before they could actually harm her.
Very much a breather issue after the conclusion of the last arc, Ahmed writes an issue with almost no threat or urgency that isn’t just in one of the characters heads, excepting for a short space-dogfight at the end. The tone is complimented by guest artist Frazer Irving’s soft, dreamlike art. Irving’s style is almost the complete opposite of Ward’s hyperactive neon trips, almost resembling a children’s picture book; but is equally gorgeous to the work Ward has done on the series, and fits just as nicely into Ahmed’s story. This is easily the most beautiful single I picked up this week, and proves that Black Bolt is one Marvel book you should be reading even on “off” months.
Crosswind #5
Juniper’s guys follow Cruz to Mika’s house, where he’s just finished beating her up. Then he kills two of the three guys Case sent to kill him, and promises to kill Cason as well. Then he gets a visit from the mysterious old man who swapped Cason and Juniper, who explains the situation and why he did it. So now, Cruz is out to kill June and her family as well.
Cason overhears the old man’s voice over the phone as he threatens to kill him, and knows enough of Cruz to prepare for him to make the trip to Seattle. Juniper catches up with Mika and tells her everything that’s been going on, and they both decide to try and cut Cruz off in Seattle.
Meanwhile, thanks to Cason’s advice, Kelly’s finally making friends at school. And he comes home to his step-mom finally giving his dad what he deserves.
While I didn’t really think the body-swap needed an explanation, I’m very glad that it happened essentially out of pettiness. The man who did it did so because they both refused to sell him their plane tickets so that he could see his wife before she died. It’s like something out of a myth, a god ruining your life because you were rude to them in disguise. It really may as well have been random.
Staggs continues to do wonders just with the main characters’ postures, like how June still holds her towel up to her chest as though to cover breasts, or how Case sits with a wide stance even in a dress.
Paper Girls #17
Charlotte finally fills the girls in on the time-travel war that they’ve found themselves caught in the middle of: The teens who’ve been helping the girls are time travellers from at least 70,000AD who go back in time to right wrongs; and are are fighting against the “old-timers”, the first generation born after the invention of time-travel, who try to prevent anyone from interfering with the timestream. She was told this by a friend of the same time travellers who rescued Erin’s life; and even though she seems legit, if not a little eccentric; Mac doesn’t trust her completely. And when Mac tries to tell this to KJ, and also calls Charlotte a lesbian, KJ comes out to Mac, who is shocked once she realizes what KJ just told her.
Meanwhile, Tiff escapes from the overturned police car amid the giant robot battle happening around her, and manages to make it to her parents house, where she finds a mysterious goth sitting in her living room, and claiming to be married to her!
It only took seventeen issues, but we finally have an idea of what’s going on in Paper Girls! Yay! Not that I minded much, obviously; I was enjoying it either way, but it is cool to have some more context. And that moment between Mac and KJ is *mwah* perfect. Their faces! So good! Besides that though, this is mainly an exposition issue; with Tiff’s scenes being almost completely wordless. I still love how the teen’s mech is just an EVA though – that’s fantastic.
Uber: Invasion #9
The unique Battleship Churchill – Leah – and a thirteen year old battleship candidate named Tamara rendezvous with Patton’s forces as he crosses the alps. The Germans have him walled off with a small squad of Ubers, expertly positioned to prevent his further movement despite his superior forces. Luckily, Churchill’s arrival provides him with inspiration for an attack the Germans could never see coming.
I won’t say how, because it’s one of the most amazing action sequences in recent comics memory, but needless to say, the issue ends with the Allies winning big, and possibly turning the tide of the war.
Leah is the star of this issue, and oh boy does she earn it. She’s a gentle giant, possibly the strongest single character in the franchise, and someone you do not want to be on the wrong side of. Gete draws her to make her basically a Totoro on one page, and then the Hulk on another. Generally there’s a distance between Uber’s characters and the reader because of the book’s narration taking the form of an objective post-war narration, but you really end up rooting for Leah, and not just because she’s ripping Nazis to pieces.
