Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice! -B.T.S
TLDR: making gingerbread cookies w Ben :p. This is part 4/12 of Azzie's Advent Calendar 2024!
Word count + info: 4.6k. including dialogue.
Warnings + Content Ahead: SFW! No warnings : )
Azzie Notes ✚: this one’s heavily inspired by my own family tradition - we always bake gingerbread cookies since I was a little girl! The first time I did, it was in primary school when I was maybe 6, 7 years old? And after that, my family took it and made it our own little mess :) v v wholesome making little biscuits, shaping them and waiting for them to cool and then decorating them… it’s such a pure act of patience and love, right? Also, changed the middle pic to the MSG pic, his eyes are twinkling, god I love him bad

————————————————————————
The morning was quiet, the kind of stillness that only came when the house was nearly empty. A faint December golden light filtered through the kitchen windows, warming the wooden table where you sat, flipping through the cookbook you had picked up at the Christmas market. The glossy pages felt smooth under your fingers, each recipe accompanied by photos of perfectly baked treats and artful decorations. It was the sort of book that made everything seem achievable, even for a novice. A steaming mug of coffee sat on the table beside you, the rich aroma mingling with the faint hint of pine from the Christmas tree in the other room. Ben had made the coffee, placing it in front of you with a casual kiss on the top of your head and a small rub on your shoulder before taking his place, sitting across you at the table with his own mug. Underneath the table, Halo was sprawled out comfortably, still softly snoring against the floorboards whenever you shifted your feet.
The house was calm, Lisa and Bryan were out doing some last-minute Christmas shopping, and Emma had spent the night at her friend’s house, leaving her still lounging over there for the day. It was just you and Ben.
He seemed at ease, leaning against the counter in his sweats and a faded T-shirt, sipping his coffee and scrolling on his phone. There was something different about him in his childhood home, a quiet confidence, a comfort that came with years of familiarity but you being with him? He liked the way that felt.
Curiosity got the better of him as he set down his phone and stepped closer. “What’s got you so locked in?” he asked, peering over your shoulder.
You smiled, holding the book up slightly so he could see. “Gingerbread cookies,” you said, pointing to a page with intricately decorated cookies that looked almost too good to eat.
Ben squinted at the lengthy recipe and let out a soft laugh. “That’s... ambitious. Is that what youre thinking of makin'?”
“Maybe,” you said with a shrug. “I mean, when I was a kid, we made gingerbread cookies once or twice, but it was the easy kind. You know, cutting out shapes from pre-made dough and sticking them on parchment paper. Not exactly homemade.”
He chuckled, leaning against the back of your chair. “So, you skipped all the hard stuff and went straight to the fun part, huh?”
“Exactly,” you said with a grin. “But this... this is the real deal. Making the dough, rolling it out, and baking from scratch. It feels like something I should try at least once, one day...”
Ben’s eyes softened as he watched you, the corners of his lips twitching upward. “Well,” he said, straightening up, “why not today? Let’s do it.”
“Really?” you asked, raising an eyebrow. “You sure? This recipe is, like, a full-day commitment. I was just looking for inspiration.”
He nodded, setting his empty mug on the table. “Yeah, I’m sure. Mom’s stocked up on all the baking stuff for the holidays, so we should have everything we need. Besides, you’ve been talkin' about a baking day since we got here. Why not now?”
You hesitated for a moment, scanning his face for any hint of second thoughts, but his broad smile was nothing but genuine, his excitement contagious.
“Alright,” you said, closing the cookbook and standing up. “Let’s do it. But you better be ready to work, I’m not doing this all by myself.”
Ben smirked, crossing his arms. “Don’t worry, I’m a great assistant. I’ll handle the hard labour.”
You rolled your eyes, unable to hide your small smile as you began to call out ingredients while Ben gathered. Ben leaned casually against the counter, watching as you carefully measured out the flour, sugar, and spices, the soft clinking of measuring cups the only sound in the room. There was a quiet concentration in the way you moved, a small crease forming between your brows as you checked the recipe and sifted the flour into a large mixing bowl. Every so often, he caught you muttering numbers under your breath, double-checking your measurements, making him smile in pure smitten adoration.
“You’re taking this seriously, huh?” he teased, arms crossed as he leaned a hip against the counter.
“Of course I am,” you replied, not looking up. “You don’t mess around with dough. One wrong move, and it’s game over.”
Ben chuckled, stepping closer to the cabinets. “Alright, Chef. What’s next? Spices?”
You nodded, dragging your finger across the page of the cookbook to check the measurements. “Yep. Cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. You got it?”
Ben nodded before he pushed himself off, stretching up to the top shelf of the cabinet, his fingers easily reaching the small spice jars that were out of your reach. He handed them to you one by one, lingering close as you measured each spice into a small bowl. The kitchen was soon filled with a warm, heady aroma, the kind that instantly made everything feel more festive.
“Smells like Christmas, for sure. You're doing somethin' right” Ben said, leaning down slightly to take a dramatic sniff.
“Smells like a lot of hard work,” you corrected, smiling as you added the spices to the bowl. “Alright, next is the wet ingredients. Butter and molasses, grab the molasses for me?”
Ben grabbed the jar and slid it across the counter toward you, watching you spoon the thick, dark syrup into the bowl. “That stuff’s like tar,” he remarked, raising an eyebrow.
You laughed. “It’s basically liquid gold for gingerbread, though. Trust the process.”
He nodded, though his expression remained sceptical. “Mhm. If you say so.”
As you cracked eggs into the mixture and began to combine everything, Ben wandered over to your side, resting a hand lightly on your back as he peered into the bowl.
“You’ve got this,” he said playfully. “But if you need some real muscle for the next part, I’m available.”
You glanced up at him, smirking. “Oh, don’t worry, you’re about to get your hands dirty.”
His grin widened. “Man, I’ve been waiting for you to say that!”
Once the dough had started to come together, you handed him the wooden spoon, pointing at the thick mixture.
“Alright, muscle-man. It’s your time to shine. But be careful, don’t overwork it. We need the dough to be soft and pliable, not like a brick.”
"Don’t overwork it," he echoed, his voice deliberately mimicking your tone. He tried to press his lips into a straight line, but his smile betrayed him. With a playful glint in his eye, he took the spoon from your hand. "Got it," he said, his grin slipping through despite his efforts.
You stepped back, crossing your arms as you watched him take over. His biceps flexed slightly as he stirred the dense dough, and you couldn’t help but notice how effortlessly he managed it, effortless and, somehow, ridiculously attractive. He was a mix of charm and frustration rolled into one.
“This isn’t so bad,” he said, glancing at you with a smug grin. “I thought you said this would be hard work.”
You rolled your eyes, sighing as you distracted yourself by taking the dirty utensils and bowls into the sink to stop yourself from drooling. “That’s because you haven’t gotten to the part where your arm feels like it’s going to fall off.”
He laughed, shaking his head. “Please. I’m a professional athlete. I think I can handle-”
Mid-sentence, the spoon hit a particularly stubborn clump of dry dough, plastered in flour, and Ben’s smug expression faltered as he struggled to keep a massive part of the unmixed batter from spilling over the edge of the bowl.
“Careful!” you exclaimed, eyes widening as you stepped forward to steady the bowl.
“Alright, alright,” he said, his voice tinged with laughter as he adjusted his grip. “Maybe this is a little more work than I thought.”
You grinned, giving his arm a playful nudge. “Told you. Now, keep going. You’re doing great.”
With a determined look, Ben continued to fold the dough, his movements steady and deliberate under you as you glanced every now and then. You found yourself smiling as you guided him, appreciating how he seemed to take it all in stride, even the mess.
Finally, the dough was smooth and well-mixed, and you placed a hand on his arm to stop him. “Okay, that’s perfect. Any more, and you’ll ruin it.”
Ben set the spoon down with a dramatic sigh, shaking his hand as though he’d just finished a workout. “You weren’t kidding about the arm workout.”
You laughed, reaching for the plastic wrap to cover the dough. “See? Baking isn’t just about precision, it’s about endurance. You’d better hydrate if you want to make it to the next round. Maybe take a seat on the bench.”
Ben chuckled, as he watched you wrap the dough in cling film and set it in the fridge to rest. His gaze soft as he admired the way you moved around the kitchen.
“You’re kinda cute when you get all serious about this,” he said, his voice low and warm.
You shot him a playful glare, your cheeks warming. “Focus, Shelton. We’re only halfway there.”
He held up his hands in surrender, a grin tugging at his lips. “Alright, Chef. What’s next?”
With the dough resting in the fridge, you began tidying up, wiping down the counter and setting out the tools you’d need for shaping the cookies. Ben, however, wasn’t nearly as patient. He leaned against the fridge door, staring at it like he could will the dough to finish resting faster.
“So,” he said, breaking the silence, “do we have to wait for an hour? Can’t we just… you know, start shaping them now? It's not like we're in an exam, no one's gonna know.”
You glanced over your shoulder, catching the almost puppy-like look in his eyes. “Yes, we absolutely have to wait,” you said firmly, though you couldn’t help but smile at his impatience.
Ben groaned dramatically, dragging his hand down his face and through his curls, tussling them softly. “But why? It’s just dough. It’s not like it’s a steak that needs to rest or something.”
You laughed, shaking your head as you reached into a drawer to pull out the cookie cutters. “Because,” you explained, setting the cutters on the counter, “resting the dough lets the gluten relax, which keeps the cookies from spreading too much when they bake. It also gives the spices time to blend together and makes the dough easier to roll out. Trust me, it’s worth it.”
Ben sighed, back again with that sceptical look, before mumbling, “Sounds like a lot of fancy science talk just to make some cookies.”
“Maybe,” you admitted, grinning at him. “But it’s the kind of science that keeps your cookies from turning into sad little blobs.”
He broke into a smile, finally conceding. “Fine, fine. You’re the expert.”
“Thank you,” you said with mock seriousness, giving him a teasing salute before focusing on your setup.
While the dough rested, you busied yourself with preparing the island. You got Ben on an exploration to find a large rolling pin and the cookie cutters, while you dusted the surface and neatly lined up the equipment, spreading them out across the counter as excitement spread through you. There were hearts, stars, gingerbread men and women, Christmas trees, and a few other festive shapes.
Ben watched you work, his hands tucked into the pockets of his sweatpants. “You love preppin', huh?”
“Always,” you replied, tossing him a smile as you laid sheets of parchment paper onto baking trays. “Baking is all about being ready before the chaos starts.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Chaos?”
“You’ll see,” you said ominously, grabbing a canister of flour and sprinkling a thin layer across the island. “Just wait until we’re elbow-deep in icing and sprinkles.”
Ben chuckled, stepping closer as you worked. “Oh, that sounds like my kind of chaos.”
Once everything was set up, you took a step back, admiring your handiwork. The counter was clean, floured, and ready to go, with the trays and cutters neatly arranged. Ben, however, was back to pacing near the fridge, occasionally glancing at the clock.
Once the dough had rested, you pulled it from the fridge and placed it on the floured countertop, its chilled surface smooth and pliable under your hands. Ben leaned in eagerly, eyeing the mound of dough like it was a prize.
"Alright," you said, handing him the rolling pin, "your turn. Just don’t go too wild. Nice and even, okay?”
He raised an eyebrow, gripping the rolling pin with an exaggerated flourish. “Nice and even. Got it. I’m basically a pro already.”
“Uh-huh,” you teased, stepping back to preheat the oven.
Ben pressed the rolling pin to the dough and began rolling, his movements a little uneven at first. He squinted down at the dough, muttering, “This is harder than it looks.”
You glanced over, biting back a laugh. “It’s not a race, Ben. Just take your time and keep it even.”
“Don’t worry, I understand it now” he whispered, almost to himself, as he shot you a grin. “I’ve got it handled. Gimme a second and this dough’ll be flatter than a pancake.”
You couldn’t help but laugh, shaking your head as you prepared the cookie cutters, dipping them lightly into flour to keep the shapes clean.
Once the dough was rolled out to the perfect thickness, you stepped in, lining up the cutters.
“Okay, now for the fun part,” you said, handing him a gingerbread man cutter. “Start with this one. We’ll work our way through all the shapes.”
Ben pressed the cutter into the dough, lifting it to reveal a cleanly cut gingerbread man. He held it up like a trophy, beaming. “Look at that! First try. Told you I’m a natural.”
“Alright, natural,” you said, handing him a Christmas tree cutter. “Let’s see how you do with the next one.”
The two of you fell into a steady rhythm, cutting out hearts, stars, and more gingerbread men and women. Ben found himself holding up each shape, constantly amazed and proud before gently setting the cookies down onto the parchment paper.
As he cut out another gingerbread man, he paused, holding up one of each. “Now, hold on. We gotta make sure there’s an equal number of these two.” He gestured between the gingerbread man and woman cutters. “Gotta keep things fair. Equality and all.”
You rolled your eyes, laughing. “How very noble of you.”
“I’m serious!” he insisted, though the twinkle in his eye betrayed him. “We’re not gonna have more dudes than ladies on the tray. That’d be unbalanced.”
“Okay, okay,” you relented, humouring him. “Equality it is.”
As the shapes piled up, flour seemed to cover everything and everyone. Ben had a streak of it across his cheek, and you could feel it dusting your own hands, arms, and even your clothes. At one point, he reached across to grab another cutter and left a powdery handprint on your sleeve.
“Ben!” you exclaimed, pointing to the mark.
He glanced down at his flour-covered hand, then back at you, his grin widening. “Oops. Too focused on the task at hand.”
You shook your head, fighting back a smile. Despite the mess, you were both surprisingly focused, working in sync as you filled tray after tray with perfectly cut cookies. The shapes were neat and even, and the dough scraps were rolled back together with care to minimise waste.
“You know,” Ben said as he carefully placed a gingerbread woman onto a tray, “I’m impressed. I thought for sure I’d mess this up by now.”
“You’re doing great,” you said, genuinely impressed by his effort. “See? Patience pays off.”
“Don’t get used to it,” he teased, brushing a bit of flour off his hands. “I’m still not sold on this whole ‘waiting for the dough’ thing.”
“You’ll thank me when the cookies turn out perfect,” you shot back, sliding the trays into the preheated oven.
Ben stood back, surveying the trays of cookies with a satisfied look. “Alright,” he said, crossing his arms. “What’s next? More science lessons, or are we finally gonna taste-test these bad boys?”
“Not yet,” you said with a laugh. “We still have decorating to do. And no, you’re not eating them straight out of the oven.”
“Why not?” he drawled, feigning a pout.
“Because,” you said, placing a hand around his waist, “burnt tongues aren’t fun.”
“Patience isn’t my strong suit,” he admitted, as he put his head in his hands, groaning.
“Really? I would've never guessed,” you said dryly, earning a playful nudge from him.
“Alright, what can I do while we wait?” he asked, clearly trying to distract himself.
You handed him a dishcloth and pointed to the floor where flour had inevitably dusted its surface. “You can start by cleaning that up.”
Ben groaned but grabbed the cloth anyway, crouching down to wipe the floor. “Slave labour,” he muttered under his breath, though the smirk on his face gave him away.
“You’re the one who asked for something to do,” you pointed out, crossing your arms as you watched him.
He glanced up at you, his grin widening. “Yeah, yeah. Just don’t forget this when I’m a pro-level cookie decorator later.”
“Oh, trust me,” you said with a laugh. “I won’t.”
"You’re on decorating prep duty, babe. No rest for two pros like us.”
“Deal,” you said, as you hauled over the bags of powdered sugar, food colouring, and piping bags from the counters. As Ben wiped down the counter, his movements methodical but still sprinkled with his usual flair, you busied yourself mixing the icing. The clinking of bowls and the soft sound of Ben scrubbing created a cozy rhythm. You glanced over occasionally, catching the sight of him brushing stray flour onto the floor with a sheepish grin.
“Hey,” you called out, pointing a spatula at him. “I saw that.”
He froze mid-swipe, his grin widening. “What? The counter’s clean, isn’t it?”
You shook your head, giggling, and returned to your icing. With a careful hand, you divided the thick, glossy mixture into separate bowls, adding drops of food colouring until you had a rainbow of festive hues: deep red, vibrant green, black, soft white, and even a cheerful yellow.
Ben, having finished the counter, moved onto the floor. “How does flour even get under the table?” he muttered, crouching down to clean up.
“Halo probably helped,” you teased, glancing at the dog, who was padding through the house innocently.
“Traitor.”
As the first batch of cookies began to brown in the oven, the warm scent of spices filled the air. You could feel your shoulders relax as you peeked through the oven door. The cookies were holding their shape perfectly, with no spreading, no cracking.
“Success,” you whispered to yourself, relieved.
Ben stood up, dusting his hands on his sweatpants. “Counter’s spotless. Floor’s… basically there too.” He leaned against the island, watching as you filled the piping bags with icing and lined up the bowls of candy, mini M&Ms, jelly tots, and even icing pearls.
“This is starting to look serious,” he commented.
Ben didn’t wait for an invitation. He reached out, snagging a still-steaming gingerbread man from the tray.
“Ben!” you exclaimed. “It’s hot!”
“Yeah, I noticed,” he said through a wince, pulling the cookie back quickly and blowing on it. He took a cautious bite, only to pause, his face twisting.
“Ow!”
You couldn’t help but sigh at the way he pouted, holding the cookie gingerly in one hand.
“I warned you,” you said, stepping closer.
“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered, his pout deepening.
Still laughing, you leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his lips, lingering just long enough to distract him from his discomfort. When you pulled back, his expression had shifted from a pout to a sheepish smile.
“Guess it was worth it,” he murmured, his voice warm.
You rolled your eyes playfully, taking the cookie from his hand and setting it back on the rack. “You’ll get your turn when they cool down. Patience, remember?”
“Patience is overrated, babe,” he said, but his grin told you he wasn’t serious.
As the cookies cooled, you finished preparing the decorating station, laying everything out neatly. Ben leaned against the counter, watching you with an easy smile. The kitchen felt brighter, and warmer, with the two of you moving around each other in sync. The air smelled of gingerbread, and the promise of creative chaos hung in the air.
Finally, it was time to start decorating. You handed Ben a piping bag filled with red icing and grabbed a green one for yourself. “Okay, let’s see those artistic skills,” you teased.
“Oh, prepare to be amazed,” he said, squeezing the bag experimentally.
The first few cookies were simple, a heart with white trim, and a star with bright yellow accents, but the moment Ben decided to create a gingerbread woman to resemble you, all bets were off.
“Hold still,” he said, squinting at you with a ridiculous level of concentration.
“Ben, it’s a cookie, not a portrait session.”
“Shh. Art takes focus,” he said, holding up a finger up dramatically.
You watched as he gave the gingerbread woman what was supposed to be your hair but looked more like lopsided spaghetti. The face was slightly off-centre, and the dress he attempted was smudged in one corner. When he finally set the piping bag down, he stepped back with a proud grin.
“Ta-da!” he announced, holding it up for you to see.
You stared at the cookie and burst out laughing. “Is that supposed to be me?”
“It’s abstract,” he defended. “You don’t get it ‘cause it’s, like, high-level creativity.”
“Uh-huh,” you said, wiping tears of laughter from your eyes. “I think I’ll stick to realism.”
You got to work on your gingerbread man, deciding to return the favour as you made a gingerbread version of Ben, giving him signature curly hair, his big grin, and, of course, his ON tennis kit, complete in black with a bright pink line in its detailing.
When you showed him the finished cookie, his eyes widened, clearly taking it sorely. “Okay, I see what you’re doin’. Showin’ me up.”
“It’s not a competition,” you teased.
“Everything’s a competition,” he said, but the small smile on his face told you he didn’t mind losing this one.
Next, you both decided to make cookies representing the rest of the family. Bryan’s gingerbread man got a blue sweater, Lisa’s had an apron and a pearl necklace, and Emma’s had her glasses and a small, closed-eye smile.
“Think they’ll recognise themselves?” you asked, tilting your head as you studied the lineup of gingerbread people.
“They’d better,” Ben said, carefully adding a final swirl of icing to Lisa’s apron. “I put effort into this.”
By the time you’d decorated the rest of the cookies, trees, stars, hearts, and more, the sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow through the kitchen windows. The oven was off, the counters were cleared, and the air was filled with the lingering smell of gingerbread and icing sugar. Just as you were cleaning up the last bits of mess, the front door opened, and the sound of laughter and familiar voices filled the house.
“Y’all home?” Lisa called out.
“In the kitchen!” Ben answered, rinsing the last mixing bowl in the sink.
Lisa and Bryan walked in first, carrying shopping and takeout bags, with Emma trailing behind. The three of them paused when they saw the island covered with cookies, their eyes immediately landing on the five gingerbread figures standing together at the front of the spread.
“What …on earth...?” Bryan said, leaning in to examine the cookies more closely. His eyes darted from the gingerbread man with a blue sweater to the one wearing an apron, and his face broke into a grin. “Are these supposed to be us?”
Lisa gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. “Oh my gosh, look at this!” She reached out delicately, picking up the cookie version of herself. “This is adorable, what a sweet surprise! Is that… an apron? You even added pearls!”
“That one’s me!” Emma crowed, pointing to the gingerbread woman with glasses and a massive smile. “I look so happy. Accurate.”
“Yeah, that was intentional,” you said with a smirk, glancing at Ben, who gave you a sly grin in return.
Bryan carefully picked up his cookie, inspecting the details. “Meanwhile all I got was a bald cookie and a sweater. Real funny.”
“You love sweaters, Dad,” Ben teased, drying his hands with a kitchen towel. “Don’t act like it’s not spot-on.”
Lisa placed her cookie back on the tray and turned to you, beaming. “This is so precious. Did you two make all of these today?”
“All day,” you confirmed, leaning against the counter. “We went all out, cutting, baking, decorating. Ben even rolled out the dough.”
“Don’t let her fool ya,” Ben drawled, nudging your shoulder with his. “She was the boss in this operation. I was just the muscle.”
“And the comic relief,” you added.
Emma leaned over the tray, picking up one of the star-shaped cookies. “These look amazing. Did y’all seriously make all these by hand? No, like, premade stuff?”
“Handmade, start to finish,” Ben said, puffing out his chest. “We’re pros now.”
Lisa laughed, shaking her head. “Well, I’d say it was worth it. They’re beautiful. I almost don’t want to eat them.”
“Almost,” Bryan echoed, already reaching for one of the undecorated trees.
Ben darted forward, intercepting him. “Hold up! Food first. Cookies are dessert.”
“Who made you the dessert police?” Bryan asked, but he let the cookie go, chuckling as he set it back down.
Lisa set the takeout bags on the counter, and the family gathered around, plates and utensils being passed out as everyone helped themselves to the food. The conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter and teasing, and the cookies remained at the centre of attention, a charming reminder of the day you and Ben had spent together.
Later, Ben stood with his arms crossed, watching his family laugh and talk as they picked out cookies to eat. When he noticed you looking, he gave you a soft, warm smile, the kind that made your chest feel full as he opened his arm to invite you in for a hug.
You walked over to him, settling into his side. “This turned out pretty great, huh?”
“Yeah,” he said, his voice low. He glanced at the tray of cookies again, then back to you. “Today was fun.”
You let your head rest on his shoulder. His arm slipped around your waist, holding you close as the room buzzed with warmth and love.
“Next time,” he murmured, his lips brushing your temple, “we’re makin’ gingerbread tennis rackets. I’ve got ideas to workshop.”
You sighed, feigning exasperation before laughing softly, tilting your head up to look at him. “I can’t wait to see how that turns out.”
“Better start stretchin’ my art portfolio now,” he teased, but the look in his eyes was anything but playful, soft, steady, and full of affection.
And just like that, in the middle of his childhood kitchen, surrounded by his family and the lingering scent of gingerbread, you realised this moment was one you’d hold onto for a long, long time.

My forced formal transformation story - the things we do for love...
Sam was the love of my life. She was more stylish, more cultured, more intelligent. I had a reasonable job and was a fairly popular and trendy guy, but I was punching above my weight and I knew it. But we clicked. There was a connection and it just worked. I'd do anything for her.
We'd been going out for about 5 months when she suggested I should move in to her family home. She lived with her father in a large house alongside their 2 staff. Now her father was a traditionalist, and, like her, was very well educated and informed, and I liked the fact he was very direct. He was a successful business owner and by default seemed to be in business mode, and always wore a somber suit and a serious expression on his face. His wife had sadly passed, but I respected the great job they had done in raising Sam into the fine woman she was.
He told me that he'd be glad of me to move in - separate rooms of course - but as our relationship was clearly serious he wanted to help us, but emphasised that he wanted to help me develop both intellectually and physically, and while he would take things slowly, he would require me to embrace both the learnings and recommendations he made to help guide me towards being a good husband, should we reach that point.
I readily agreed.
A month later and I moved in. Stephen started straight away teaching me much of his knowledge on everything from etiquette to literature, and the art of being a good partner. He explained the man's place was not about fashion, beauty and flamboyancy, but, rather about masculinity, dependability and stability, and being understated, while allowing Sam to take the limelight. He explained that the correct appearance was every bit as important as how you act and how would help guide me through these factors over the months ahead.
The first change came the following Monday. I woke to find in my wardrobe that all my t shirts had been replaced by good quality white formal shirts, and accompanying white vests to wear under them. And I was gutted to see that my entire trainer collection had disappeared and been replaced by 3 pairs of, very traditional, formal lace up black leather Oxford shoes. Even when selecting my smartest dark jeans, they still looked very out of keeping with the formal white shirt, and pulling on the shoes the leather creaked as my feet adjusted to being wedged into the pointy toes. I tied the laces and saw my face reflecting in the incredibly highly polished leather uppers. Walking in these shoes was a challenge, as the smooth soles meant I had to walk much more slowly and with poise, in order to not skid.
I would never have chosen these clothes but went along with it, with Sam encouraging me. I got a few wise cracks about shiny shoes at work but that was about it. I worked in IT so it had a fair variety of oddballs, from geeks wearing cartoon t shirts, to goths, so while my change in style was out of character for me, it wasn't a major issue.
I also needn't have worried about the jeans not looking right, as, by the end of the week, these had all been removed, to be replaced by heavy, pale grey wool trousers, tightly tailored and with razor sharp creases that hung straight down with just a small break above the seam which grazed the top of my Oxfords. A shiny black formal belt was also provided.
This became what I wore every single day. It felt particularly strange wearing this at weekends when seeing friends, and the wise cracks at work focused on it being my school uniform, but Sam kept me up, telling me how handsome I looked. If she was happy, then I'd cope. I no longer worked out at the gym, and I controlled the time I spent with friends to ensure I committed the time to my new family and to this process.
The following Saturday Stephen announced we'd be making a trip to his barber.
I was straight into Anthony's chair, and with a glance on the mirror I got a last look at my prized hair. Everyone loved my hair. I got lots of great comments about it. it was long, luscious, tousled and framed my face beautifully being roughly parted to drape down and across my forehead and feel flowing to lying on my collar.
There was no discussion as Anthony combed through my hair. For years my shoulder length hair has been roughly parted above my right eye, but now a very severe straight part was created on the far left side of my head with the hair scraped to either side of this stark white line.
Without ceremony the clippers were powered up and ploughed up the left side of my head towards the part, while Anthony used his comb to angle out the hair so that the clippers left a slightly longer length at the top, but otherwise a fine pelt of military length hair was left three quarters of the way up. This continued round my head as my ears became uncovered for the first time. And boy are my ears massive. Alarmingly so. Jug ears without a doubt, and definitely having benefited from the hair that had very satisfactorily covered them for over 20 years. Next Anthony took his scissors and was cutting the top down with massive chunks. Nothing longer than an inch and a half remained. The next shock was just what a big forehead I had. With so little hair, my facial features were really standing out. A razor then took off the hairs at the back of my neck, that had never caused an issue before, but were now clearly too scruffy to remain, while my sideburns were removed to the top of ears.
Pomade was then rubbed into my hair and a comb carefully pulled the hair across my head, while Anthony styles a small quiff at the front and showed me how to re-create this.
He showed me in the mirror the remains of my hair. The uniformly clipped hair ran over half way up the back of my head before tapering to a slightly longer length leading to a small ridge ran round my head at the point that the clipped hair met the wet-looking slicked hair on top. This ridge dipped slightly at the back, but still remained high up my head, allowing the virgin scalp to shine through across most of my head. This was very much a short, no-nsense business man's haircut
I went to sit with my cold - and much lighter - head, while Stephen got a trim. I realised he had an identical cut. Same left part, clipping, ridge, slicked quiff. Though Stephen wore the cut far better as he had far less expanse of clipped scale due to having a much lower hairline and smaller, rounder head. While my head was very clearly very elongated and egg-like. He also had small ears that sat neatly tucked into the side of his head, unlike my satellite dishes. I ran my hand down the back of my head, which sent a shiver down my spine from the bristles that were an alien feeling.
Sam looked genuinely shocked when she saw me. I couldn't blame her as my features seemed to have moved round my face from this brutal cut. My massive pale gleaming forehead and giant ears exposed for the first time, and the brutality of the cut showing the elongated oval shaped head that had been hidden for so many years. I felt shell shocked, but Stephen offered a rare word of encouragement by saying how positive it was that the men of the house were now setting a clear standard on grooming. I truly hated this haircut and how it made me feel and look, but a part of me also really felt proud that Stephen wanted me to take on part of his style. This really was a defining moment of moving from fashionable to formal.
Friends and colleagues either looked in horror or laughed but told me it would soon grow. However I very much doubted this would be allowed to happen. It was the second haircut 2 weeks later that got the worst response, as no one could begin to fathom why I would inflict this same style on myself for a second time. But this became routine that ever 2 weeks we'd both be shaved, trimmed and slicked to ensure the stubble remained short enough to pass muster.
I think even Stephen realised I needed to get used to my new look as the next few weeks were more about using my new skills, such as Sam and I attending small dinners at home with close friends and associates of Stephen.
Then, an upgrade came. A plethora of very sombre ties in shades of navy, burgundies and dark green appeared alongside a navy double breasted blazer with rows of gold buttons running down the front sides. This became standard attire, as my heavily starched shirt collars now became buttoned to the top and digging into my neck, with a Windsor knotted tie, together with tie clip as standard from morning to night and the blazer whenever with company, and fully buttoned whenever I wasn't seated. I now looked like an off duty naval officer, but it did too make me sit up straight and hold myself taller as a result.
A couple of other hurdles came over the next month. First I was taken to the opticians for the fitting of my new glasses. It was a surprise to me I was getting glasses, as I lived constantly in contact lenses, having only a small pair of rimless frames for emergencies. However the frames that had been chosen for me were big gold framed aviator glasses that filled the width of my face, and the frames glinted in the light as I moved. However as I was so myopic the lenses were extremely thick, and the lenses shrunk down my eyes (one of my best features, which now looked weirdly small and watery and hidden by these large rectangular fishbowl lenses, with strong reflections) as well as creating a very visible cut in the side of the lenses meaning my head looked like it had had chunks taken out of it. My contact lenses were removed and these became a daily dominating feature on my face, as the world now saw me as a bespectacled man for the first time. Due to the weight of the large panes of glass that now sat across my face, they kept sliding down my nose. They were adjusted, but the result meant the arms of the glasses dug into the side of my face, creating permanent creases in the temples of my head.
I also had my tattoo on my arm removed by Lazer. It wasn't appropriate. It was a painful correction. Both in the emotional loss of something I loved and the physical agony of it being eradicated.
This was me now, this was my daily uniform. I didn't now need to spend time thinking about what to wear or what to buy, as it was already a given. When I stood beside Sam, she looked radiant and beautiful as ever, while I remain dependable and reliable beside her. Ultimately I was grey. Yes I looked very smart and could be very charming, but no one would give me a second look beyond my formal and traditional appearance. I admit that the old me used to like the glances I'd get from women checking me out, and I would flirt with women and preen myself to be as attractive as possible. Now no one I would have found attractive would give me the time of day, and if people stared, it was now for very different reasons This was me now. Formal, nerdy, a bit ugly. From my smartly quiffed hair and geeky big glasses and smart outfit. But I was fully committed to Sam, as it should be, and that was what mattered.

Grayson Hawthorne Headcanons- when he was younger
Tumblr media
He took ages to sleep. Playing chess games with himself, trying to draw the world map by memory literally did anything to fall asleep faster
Sometimes when he had nightmares he would just lay in bed knowing that Jameson would come to his room first. Once he did they would talk about things (never about their nightmares) but just in general. Once he knew Jameson was asleep he would finally sleep as well
Always took care of Xander even if it meant being the uptight brother
Wanted his mothers attention so would draw her cute cards and gave her flowers that he had dug up from the gardens
When he was bored, if his grandfather was at home he would follow him around sometimes discretely to see what he did and how he acted (he wanted tips on what to do once he got the fortune)
Being super young, Grayson sometimes wondered down corridors, just so he could get lost and then maybe he would get a little attention and someone would come find him
Instead he just found his way back to his room because obvs he's extremely smart
He also made up a lot of games for him, Xander and Jameson to play when they were younger
Always asked Nash for advice before doing anything because he didn't want to do it wrong
Never or barely cried in front of everyone because he didn't want to be seen as weak
He was a quiet child in class but always put his hand up to give the answer
Liked it when Jameson joined his school because Jameson was able to make friends in a heartbeat with literally everyone
Didn't trust his friends completely but he did enjoy spending time with them
His favourite extra curricular was Photography which he had joined because he had wanted to create memories that lasted forever
He is naturally good at drawing/art.
When he was small and the boys had a maid he would tell her "Please could you style my hair so it looks neat?" Cared about his presentation when he was like 6 years old
Also was always so so polite. His teachers always complimented his manners in parent meetings
Great at sports especially cricket but he's not really a fan of how long the game is
Whenever he wanted something he would whisper it at first "Could I please have the crayon?" He had to repeat himself like twice before the other children could hear him
Wasn't necessarily a shy child but he was quiet compared to Jamie
Jamie and Gray always get compared by teachers "You sure he's your brother? He's the complete opposite"
Anytime any child made eye contact with him he would give them the sweetest smile his dimples showing.
He didn't have very close friends but everyone in the class liked him so he was voted for class president quite a few times
His uniform was always so clean like there would not be a spot of dirt on his clothes. He was a clean child.
Unlike Xander who always had paint splotches down his shirt
When Xander was super young like 4 years old, all 3 of them would go to Nash's room and make him read a bed time story on Saturday nights
Slowly this tradition changed to Grayson also getting a part in reading. Xander and Jamie would fall asleep and so whenever it was Jameson's turn to read he had fallen asleep
Nash would ask if he wanted to sleep here as well but because Grayson likes to be independent he would leave to his own room- half an hour later he would creep into Nash's room and sleep next to Xander
Also still liked spending time by himself. Finding a comfy corner in the library to read his favourite book to escape for a bit- he would usually find Jamie here as well seen as though he loves reading
When he was quite young he insisted on having an opticians appointment because he thought people with glasses were smarter. Of course he turned out to have 20-20 vision.
He is the most hot fucking person in the whole of Hawthorne house

i feel so high school (au) pt 2. charlos
anyway here are some high school aus for my fav f1 rpf ships and an exploration of who knows how to ball, and who knows aristotle
(based on american high school setups cause of the song)
theatre kid!charles/stage crew!carlos: probably goes without saying but carlos knows how to ball, charles knows aristotle (though maybe not in the traditional sense). so here we’ll have carlos as the stereotypical jock, plays like four sports and is the team captain in all of them, lowkey giving frat boy energy and is honestly the only reason the school has won a game in the last four years. he’s probably known for being the only guy who’s both like a jacked up gym-is-life bro and also an utter gentleman, he’s always the one holding open doors and giving up his seat. and he’s usually pretty quiet/disengaged but if anyone disrespects a female teacher you know for a fact he’s death staring them into a puddle until it stops. the only fight he’s ever gotten into was with a guy who was harassing a girl at a dance and wouldn’t let her go when she tried to pull away.
charles is like the school heartbreaker, because he can never seem to make a relationship work no matter how many times he tries… and it seems like he’s a player and he’s got a different girl every week which isn’t entirely false but he also just doesn’t know how to say no to anyone which is the root of the problem. anyway so yeah i’m making charles a theatre kid, like one who can fit pretty much any role but he prefers the classics (he’s the kind of guy who knows a shakespeare quote for pretty much any situation). he usually gets cast as the love interest whether he wants the role or not but he does get a lot of stage time which he’s happy with. he’s way more comfortable on stage than when he’s actually with people, and his looks get him pretty far but in reality he’s just really awkward and kind of shy and gets flustered so easily.
carlos is on stage crew because he needed to fill the “arts/language” requirement to graduate and stage crew counted as performing arts even though it’s all behind the scenes. so he’s there almost every day, spending more and more time as the shows approach helping build sets and man the ropes and (insert lots of other cool and technical stage crew activities here). so even they know of each other this is the first time their paths really cross and they meet.
this is going to be the most cliche romance ever. charles having breathless pearl-clutching moments of gay panic when carlos gets paint all over his shirt and stops to take it off, or lifts giant sandbags or ladders or planks around like they don’t weigh anything. except ofc charles is way too shy to say anything or make any kind of initiative move so he just finds excuses to stay longer after rehearsals, maybe he starts helping paint the sets/designs cause he’s not bad at visual arts (emphasis on alternate in this alternative universe). bonus if he makes friends with one of the stage crew girls and all of the sudden he’s got a new handler (“look around twink! everything in this office is either dead or dying even the therapy dog killed itself”) who is constantly rolling her eyes at BOTH of their inability to take a hint
this would be the kind of hc that involves dressing rooms and unexpected moments behind curtains etc.

Kalim's Birthday Fanart
As some of you may be aware already, for each twst character’s birthday i tend to make art of the birthday boy to celebrate, and my plan for this year was to use said art to promote different charities and local stores from countries in need. The next birthday on the list is Kalim’s and I wanted to make it special to promote a lot more charities than usual in a single post for the following countries: Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia and Yemen (I wanted to include Sudan as well, but I’m not sure if it would be okay to do so given the fact that it’s in Northeast Africa, either way I’ll be making another special art piece focused on African countries for Leona’s birthday but I really want to add Sudan to Kalim and Jamil’s art as well, please do let me know if that’s alright).
My plan for these is to put Kalim in these countries’ different traditional clothing (yes, all of them if possible, I like to put the boys in at least 2 different outfits for their birthday and I don’t mind putting them in more if given enough time), and while I’ve found something in my investigation I also feel unsure of how accurate said information is, as well as the fact that I haven’t been able to find good reference for each article of clothing (most pics I’ve found are low res and I can’t see the details like that). So, after consulting with my sister about it, I decided to make this post to ask for help for this, since I’m not from any of the countries mentioned and I truly don’t want to end up doing something offensive due to lack of information when my objective is to try and bring more attention to what is happening there and hopefully spread the charity links to help the victims.
So please, if you can help me in any way to verify the information I gathered or link me more sources and references I can use (especially if you’re a part of any of these cultures) I would be incredibly grateful!
Notes and List of sites I gathered and consulted under Read More.
Notes:
My plan for Kalim’s outfits based on the information I have so far goes like this:
First outfit: white Thobe w/ embroidered neckline and cuffs + red and white Kuffiyeh/Shumagh (possibly over his shoulders instead of in his head, but I might change it) – OR – Kurdish traditional clothing (sharwall, long sleeved jacket, dress shirt and pshtwen/pshten).
Second Outfit: simple white Dishdasha + Champagne colored Bisht (given his social standing, please let me know if it’s innapropiate) + classic black and white Kuffiyeh/Shumagh.
Third Outfit: Dishdasha w/ blazer + embroidered belt + Jambiya + Shawl wrapped like a turban (colors and patterns not yet decided).
Fourth Outfit: Jalabiya + scarf + skullcap (colors and patterns not yet decided).
I don’t really know if that number of outfits is enough to represent all of the mentioned cultures or if I should add more, so please let me know! I’m also trying to find more reference pictures so that I can be as accurate as possible, so links to online shops that sell these garments also work pretty well for me (preferably, with models wearing them so I can see how the fabrics and layers interact with movement).
Sources I’ve found/consulted so far:
Arab Clothing: The Ultimate Guide | IstiZada
Video: Muslim Dresses Around The World Countries 2022 | Islamic Traditional Cloth For Men | Islamic Updates - YouTube
What is a dishdasha and how is it worn? (custom-qamis.com)
What is the Difference Between a Thobe and Dishdasha? – newarabia
Bisht | Abu Dhabi Culture
Clothing – The School of Abbasid Studies
Home - Nationalclothing.org
Clothing - Kurdish Central
Again, thank you so much for the help! If you also want to send me links of charities whose proceeds go to the mentioned countries, that would be just as appreciated!

Walker episode 3 review
Making space. For past lost love, for current love, for children’s independence.
The episode starts with Liam foreshadowing the state of Cordell and Geri relationship when he explains the Japanese art of kintsugi, putting broken pottery pieces back together by using gold as glue, a metaphor for embracing flaws and imperfections and creating another piece of art.  Cordell and Geri’s relationship is complicated by the tragic deaths of their respective partners within 2 years of each other and the four of them were friends since high school.
Trey and Liam tease Cordell for not telling Geri that he loves her, and Trey advises the classic “give her a drawer” at his place to show commitment. Liam talks about Stella to Cordell, but he rather trusts Stella to come to him as he's giving his adult child space. Then Cordell follows Trey's advice on giving Geri space in his wardrobe in an awkward but sweet scene.  Cordell and Geri were monogamous with their respective late partners for 20 years, so they're inexperienced when it comes to new relationships.
Like father like daughter, the Rawlings are bad influences on the fiery member of the Walker clan.  Sadie Rawlings had convinced Stella to pretend not to have met Witt before the break-in because Stella is about to go to college and Sadie has a record.  In a panic, Stella went along.  I think ever since she spent a night in jail for something she didn’t do but because she hadn’t earned her father's trust due to her lack of credibility weighs on Stella's fear.
Like father and daughter, Stella investigates off-the-books (i.e. not telling adults) on who is targeting her with threatening messages and leaving her car smelling like gasoline, a matchbook, and Witt’s picture.  Wait, I didn’t know Witt’s body was burned in a fiery car crash.  Was this the first time they said this or was it mentioned in an earlier episode?
Liam's default state is to help people, but Stella shuts him out and Cordell isn't biting, so he's helping Cassie clear out her storage unit of sentimental items.  Meanwhile, Cordell looks for a shirt that Emily gave him, which Geri had accidentally donated when she made room for her things.  This upsets Cordell who assumed because Geri was present when Emily gave him the shirt 20 years ago, that she would know how much it means to him.  Half of Cassie’s sentimental collections aren’t even stuff she partook in but will once she slows down in some unscheduled point in the future.  Cordell looks to the past while Cassie looks to the future, neither are in the present.
Alan Alda once said, “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.” Liam and Abilene respectively encourage Cassie and Cordell to start anew by not making assumptions and being active in the present. Liam gives Cassie tickets to a robot fight event and she in turns gives him a personalized key chain that he wanted all his life but never purchased for himself because Cordell couldn't have one due to how unusual his name is.
Side note: I really need a backstory on why Bonham and Abeline saddled their first born with such an unusual name.
Side note 2: Cassie couldn't have a personalized key chain either because there isn't enough Cassandras in the world. The Greek myth origin of Cassandra was a priestess who could see the future but was never believed. Hence Cassie living up to her namesake ever since she arrived in the scene.
Turns out Geri hadn't been so great with communicating to Cordell either when he had accidentally broke Hoyt’s mug but Geri didn’t mention it.  They promised to try to communicate better and they finally said their “I love you” for the first time after 3 years of slow burn and misfires.  These two don’t have a traditional “getting together” as they are widower and widow, even though Geri and Hoyt were never married their on-off-again relationship did last 20 years.  While Cordell couldn’t get his Emily-gave-me-shirt back, he glued Hoyt’s mug back together, a callback to Liam's kintsugi talk at the start of the episode.
August first day at preparation boot camp led him to make the same mistakes that many young soldiers make ahead of their first deployment, they sell all their belongings but then they have nothing to come back to upon their return home. They made too much space but fortunately Trey mentors August towards a more balanced head space and he decides to keep his vinyl collection just like Cassie keeping her dvd collections.
While on night duty at the Ranger HQ, Cassie asks Cordell and Trey to catch her up while she was gone for 5 months; jokingly including hackers and serial killers.  Seeing Trey's and Cordell's silent facial communication, Cassie turns on her inner Sam Winchester excitement over a real serial killer on the loose and offers up her FBI connections to help with the off-the-book investigation.
The episode ends Stella and Sadie are coming up with dead ends in their off-the-book investigation when a very much alive and not-burned Witt forces Stella to drive him to an undisclosed location.
Speculation  #3!  After hearing that Stella had visited his memorial, Witt decided Stella is the one whom he can trust to get him out of whatever predicament he's in.
Score: 8.9 out of 10.  A good bottle episode focusing on character studies and development before next week's episode's deeper dive into case of the serial killer Jackal.

Note
as a person on the inside of the animation industry, are there signs that we might be heading to another dark age of animation like the 1980s (e.g. animation is regulated to just glorified toy commercials or dark fantasy movies)?
"Kid Vid" regulations mean you can't advertise for stuff kids might buy from within a show anymore. Generally, you can't even have (say) Yogi Bear wearing a shirt with his best friend BooBoo's face on it as a gag, because "what if someone made that shirt one day?" Then it would be a retroactive ad, I guess? I'm not schooled in reverse-time law like studio lawyers, so I can't really say. Still, it's almost impossible to get even a fictional product into a kid's show these days, so I think the 1980s will probably stay in their timeline. At least in that way.
I do think a bit of a "Dark Age" is upon us, though. Maybe just a small one. Just a wee little snip of a Dark Age is all.
As far as I can glean, there are going to be precious few animated shows coming out over the next couple of years because not much was picked up during the pandemic. There are only a few things being developed here and there, and I'd wager that those properties "win" simply by existing in a competition-free environment. It takes a long time to produce animation, so almost anything greenlit right now is looking at a full year for turnaround. If you talk to people in the industry right now about jobs, they use words like "wastelend" and "ramen noodles".
Then you've got A.I., of course. The other night I was having dinner with a friend and I found myself in the A.I. conversation I always imagined myself having one day-- the one where we're talking with some immediacy about what the rest of our futures look like as artists, because we know they're not going to look the same ever again. It was pretty cool in a William Gibson sort of way, but I honestly didn't expect to be having that conversation for another decade. Turns out A.I. is becoming a problem right now.
I've already talked about the "art theft" angle, and that's not the problem I'm speaking about here. The problem I'm talking about is the "what do I do when what I do becomes trivial?" problem. If anyone can make a TV show or movie in a week or a day using AI assistance, who determines what gets seen? Networks, I'd imagine, would become redundant. You don't need to fork over $15 a month for Netflix if you can make Netflix-quality content yourself. And if you can't make anything decent even with A.I. assistance, surely someone on the internet can. There would be an incredible glut of content to choose from, so again... who decides what gets seen? An algorithm, probably. Who owns the algorithm?
Peak Dark Age will be the time period when the networks realize that they're going to die, and sink all of their resources into forcing their own survival on the rest of us. I imagine massive layoffs (you don't need multiple writers or artists or support staff when you've got the right tools.) Studios will want to own the tools (of course) and/or suppress the use of those tools by anyone who might want to cut into their profits. Expect to see "A.I. is just too dangerous for the public to utilize, so it needs to be left in the capable hands of corporations". Expect to see customizable Batmans, the ability to put your mom in any Star Wars, and the serialized fever-dreams of billionaires.
I think that's the next 5-10 years. And while that's happening, the tools will keep getting better and better until literally anyone can sit down, ask for an Oscar-worthy part-rom-com/part action movie starring a twenty-five year old Steve McQueen and and eighty year old Daniel Radcliffe rescuing Air Bud from the Death Star, and then watch the resulting film with some degree of satisfaction. There'll come a point when content of any visual, auditory, and written complexity can be generated on-the-fly, and the traditional limits of budgets and schedules will just be gone.
It's easy to spin off into fantasy and try to guess exactly what's coming. I could probably spin on that all day. But what I know is that the future of the animation industry won't look anything like what I've become accustomed to. And maybe that's okay because what I've become accustomed to looks nothing like the industry I started in. Things change, and you roll with the punches. Thanks to the self-fulfilling dystopian prophecy we find ourselves in, just about everyone on the planet is finding themselves rolling with the punches coming from the Powerful Greedy. That's less a "me problem" and more a planet-wide problem we should probably all sit down and hash out, like, yesterday.
My immediate problem as an artist (and yours if you're an artist too) is figuring out how to get your ideas seen in a world where the amount of entertainment content is exploding exponentially. Especially if you're the sort of artist who needs to eat and live somewhere.
So yeah, I think there's going to be just a little peppering of Dark Age coming up. But in every time of change, there are opportunities. Hey, I'm down for an animated Dark Fantasy movie. Let's do this!

Synopsis - Your brothers ex best friend stays with you while he gets back on his feet.
Pairing - Yandere! Kim Namjoon x Fem! Reader
Tags and Warnings - Dark themed, violence
Authors Note - This took me so long my god.
A friendly reminder that all my works are dark fanfiction! Please if you do not like that do not read them! This is your final warning before hitting the keep reading button!!
“Its just for a bit, just until Joon gets back on his feet.” You followed behind your brother as he rushed to clean up your shared apartment. He'd just told you that he invited Namjoon, his friend since middle school, to stay at your place. “Besides you always liked him as a friend what makes this so different?”
“Its not him. It's just that I don't like having my space invaded, besides I haven't seen him in years!” You said finally standing still. The doorbell had rung and you were expected to get it. You show one last glare at your brother before going to the door and peering through the hole.
A dark haired male smiled back at you, eyes almost closed as he beamed at you. “Who is it?” You sung out in a sort of tune of inquiry.
“Uhh Kim Namjoon!”
You unlocked the door pulling it open, Namjoon now towering over you. He only got more attractive then you remembered. He wore a dark denim jacket and a pair of jeans. “Hey man!” Your brother said pushing last you, giving his ex best friend a huge hug.
“Thanks for having me, even though we're not as close anymore.” Namjoon said sheepishly. “And who is this?” Namjoon asked pointing at you. “You finally got a girlfriend or something?”
Did he really not recognize you?
“Ew gross, man that's my sister. I know you remember her.” Your brother quickly corrected.
Namjoons face quickly dropped at his mistake before he placed a hand on his face, turning to you almost annoyed in himself.
“I'm so sorry! I didn't even recognize you. It's been so long.”
“Its no biggie, honestly your alrig-” You were cut off as Namjoon walked past your brother and pulled you in for a tight hug. His newfound strength nearly suffocated you, his earthy scent infiltrating your senses.
“Once again super sorry.” Namjoon apologized one more time before pulling himself away from you. You smiled at him before leaving for the two to catch up.
Hopefully you could just avoid Namjoon during his stay.
#️⃣
“What you doing?”
You jumped at the voice booming behind you. Sat at your desk, you were patching up your brothers work shirt.
“Patching up some clothes, what's up?” You asked getting back to your work. Namjoon went to your bed and sat down, black hair messily on his head. You didn't look at
“Cool cool… So your brother told me your 21 now right?”
“Yeah… What brought you guys to that conversation?”
“I was asking about you, since I didn't remember you by looks. And with your brother a big working man, I want to have someone to talk to while I'm here.” Namjoon said as you shifted uncomfortably benath his gaze. You could feel his eyes glued onto your work.
“Your needlework is amazing…” You heard in your ear. Heat instantly rose to your head as you sheepishly laughed.
“Thank you. You can come watch if you really want too.” Why did you say that? Almost as if he heard your wishes, he pulled up your small chair and sat down watching you work.
It was intimate.
And that intimacy was something you cherished.
#️⃣
It'd been around a month with having Namjoon stay with you and your brother. It was going smoother than expected. You could talk to the literal giant of a man almost like you were his ex best friend.
Namjoon could talk for hours. One of his main things he reflected on was art. But sometimes he'd talk about his future and, surprisingly, It was actually nice to hear him talk about it with such optimism.
“I want a traditional life style… but without the misogyny.” Namjoon told you while you were cleaning the small kitchen. You let out a small chuckle at his humor. “I just want me, my wife, and maybe a few kids. She'd stay at home and just be happy, not trapped. Just happy, happily waiting for me to walk through that front door and we'd just talk. Then we'd go to bed and just be happy.”
The way he was so passionate about what he wanted really drew you into him. “It's untarnished and pure.” You added quickly looking away. You caught Namjoons gaze as he watched you finish your cleaning.
“Yeah… Thats exactly what I mean.” Namjoon mumbled now full on staring at you. “Hey you wanna go get something to eat?”
“Umm why?” You ask dropping the towel you were using back in the sink. “Not to be rude, I just want to know what's the occasion!” You said voice peeking towards the end of the sentence. Namjoon laughed grabbing his keys in front of him.
“I mean not like we cooked at all today so let's go eat out. My treat.”
#️⃣
You eventually did accept to go out with him to dinner. So Namjoon treated you to pizza, and made your own makeshift picnic in the park.
“So why are you staying with us?” You asked pulling a slice of pizza from the rest. Namjoons face dropped for a moment before he sighed.
“It's my parents, something happened between me and them. We'd been fighting alot recently, and and I couldn't deal with it anymore. So I left. Then I realized I needed a place to stay, and I remembered your brothers number, so got in contact and here I am.”
You couldn't have been more sympathetic of his current situation. You wished you could be there more for him but he was vague for a reason, and maybe you shouldn't pry. After he went silent, eyes straying from your own, you decided to speak up.
“Well, I'm glad your here. You've really brightened up me and my brothers lives. To say you didn't recognize me at first.” You both laughed, Namjoon shaking his head. “But seriously stay as long as you need too. I don't mind you being here, in fact I prefer it. I'd rather it be just you and me at home. Which is way better than it being just me at home by myself.”
Namjoon perked up excitely. His body language shifted almost entirely, breathing now a tad bit deeper. “You do… you just seemed so reserved .”
“I just think you're cool and easy to talk too. I really like you Namjoon.”
Namjoons face shifted from one of comfort to one of shock, then to a weird mixture of both. He moved his stray hand to your own, thumb rubbing on the top of it. You began to heat up, and leaned into his touch. His body coming closer than ever. Your eyes looked at the setting sun, the violet hues of the night sky.
“Isn’t this nice?” Namjoon said, his head sitting on top of yours.
“Yeah… It is. I don’t want it to end ever.”
#️⃣
You made it back to your apartment, having gotten closer than ever with Namjoon. You fished for your house mey out of your pocket. Then you opened the door, holding Namjoons hand to lead him in.
You then made it face to chest with your brother who stood by the door brandishing the gun that was given to him by your brother.
He took your forearm and jerked you away from Namjoon, who stood like a deer in headlights. “Hey dude don't grab her like that?” Namjoon began but he was
“You stay the fuck away from her. You make another move and I'll blow a hole in your chest.
“Whats wrong?” You said trying to pull away from your irrational brother. But his grip was vice and unrelenting.
“This fucking asshole lied. You've been staying with us to hide from the fucking police.” Your brother yelled in Namjoons facs, the end of the gun now in his chest. “I should've known not to trust you again, let alone let you anywhere near my sister.”
“Your overreacting. Dude she's a adult, and I didn't do anything…. Just let me inside.” Namjoons voice ever the calm. Your brother turned off the safety Intimidating Namjoon. But even you could see that your brothers grip was shakey.
“Tell me what is the problem…” You say, ending your struggle.
“He's been lying to us! I saw the news. Your parents are dead and your using us to hide.” Your brother yelled. Namjoons left eye ticked slightly. “I know what you are, dude your fucking ballistic. You fucking ended our friendship with your crazy ass decisions.”
“Shut up.” Namjoon seethed out.
“You with your rich ass parents ignored how you acted. You nearly killed a kid with your barehands. All over my sister… I thought you changed but your still that fucked up kid from long ag-”
“Shut the fuck up!”
You fell back as your brother was shoved forward, the gun flying out of the way. Your body hit the ground hard, as Namjoon began to punch your older sibling. His face began to bleed more, as blood flew on all three of you.
You went to grab at your brothers arm, trying to drag him away. “Leave him alone Joon! Stop!” You cried out as your brothers face was now caved in onto itself. The only thing on your mind was to try and spare him from death.
Finally things went silent as you watched your brothers chest stop, rising and falling. Namjoon still was punching at his chest and you crawled away looking behind you for the gun that flew.
Oh God he was going to kill you.
Namjoon stopped his eyes going directly to look at you. His dark hair stuck to his face and his usual denim was splattered in blood.
Your right hand finally touched the gun as you held it towards Namjoons now standing body. Your finger held onto the trigger, now suddenly your body was stiff. Namjoon had made it all the way towards you the gun still shakey.
He kneeled down, his hand moving the gun to his forehead. “Pull it. I know you want too. It's okay.”
And you did but nothing happened.
Namjoon laughed.
“I forgot I took out those bullets, that's something huh?”

Sweet Treats with Shiratorizawa
Ushijima x Reader, Tendou x Reader, Shirabu x Reader, Semi x Reader
Warnings: None
About: Spending Valentine's Day with your boyfriend!
A/n: I'll probably write something for every school as a late Valentine's Day gift!
Sweet Treats with Inarizaki
______________________
Ushijima.
It's nothing special. You know that.
Yet, you're still sure that Wakatoshi will appreciate and like it. You asked Satori about his favorite chocolate flavors, and he provided you with enough information about the actual process of making chocolate that your head was spinning, and you decided to make it from the scratch and just follow his instructions. Satori was very helpful during the process though, and you had no troubles at all to create a few pretty pralines. And now you find yourself waiting for Ushijima to come home to show him the cute heart-shaped pieces of art that you created just for him.
The noise of the front door opening interrupts your train of thoughts and makes you jump up from your seat to quickly make your way towards the entrance to greet your boyfriend.
And there he is in all his glory- tall and muscular, his ridiculously broad shoulders always make the front door look small in comparison, but what actually surprises you, is that he doesn't look sweaty, nor is he wearing his usual training suit. Instead, he looks rather formal and dressed-up, with a dark dress-shirt and formal black pants. He looks at you, and his olive eyes soften, and his lips curve to a little genuine smile.
"Hey," you return his smile and quickly hug him, and he instantly lets go of his gym bag to return the hug.
"Hey." He greets you back and wraps his long arms around you, and after a moment of being close, you both pull back for a short, sweet kiss.
"I missed you."
"I missed you too."
You never would have thought that this tall and stoic man actually carried a soft and gentle side to him back when you first met him- but even today you find yourself falling more and more for him when he shows his soft spot that he has just for you.
"I got something for you. I thought we'd celebrate this Valentine's Day according to Japanese traditions." You bring your hands to his shoulders and excitedly wait for his reaction, but you pause when you notice a worried frown on his face.
"But... I got something for you too." You're relieved after hearing his words and instantly relax in his hold.
"That's okay, you can give it to me next month or right now. I‘m fine with either option." His frown doesn’t disappear after your words though, and you slightly start to worry again.
"But I promised your parents that we'd visit them next week with good news."
"What good news? Why are you talking about my parents?"
You slowly try to put together the information that you have, and that's when it clicks.
Oh.
Oh.
"Don't tell me..."
"I actually wanted to ask you later, but y/n..."
He slowly lets go of your hips and smoothly gets down on one knee- and your jaw drops at the sudden realization that he is-
"Will you marry me, y/n?"
______________________
Tendou~
"Y/n, I got something for you!"
It's the sweet singing voice of your boyfriend that makes you turn your head towards the entrance of the living room- and there he is. Your impossibly cute and absolutely adorable boyfriend with his hands full of flowers and chocolate and the widest grin you have ever seen on his face.
"Satori, what's all that?" Your eyes grow big when you realize that he probably got all of this for you- and it's more than even he could carry.
"I wanted to make some chocolate and a sweet dessert for you, but when I started I just couldn't stop, and then I thought about you, so I kept on going and going, and suddenly I had all of these done, and then I thought about how you once told me about your favorite flowers and then I went to the flower shop and then-" you managed to get closer to him during his cute rambling and interrupt him by pressing a soft kiss to his lips. He gasps surprised, but still returns the kiss and tries to hug you with his arms full of presents.
"Thank you, Satori. I love you"
"I love you too, y/n." He grins and carefully places the presents on the table before he wraps his arms properly around you.
"I also made some chocolate for you, but I'm sure that it's nowhere near as good as yours." His grin gets even wider at your words and he quickly leans down for another peck.
"Chocolate? Hand-made from the love of my life? I'm sure that nothing can taste as sweet as that. Oh wait, maybe-" He pecks your lips once again and pretends to think hard for a second.
"Maybe you actually taste sweeter than it. I need to another try."
"You haven't even tried the chocolate once!" You protest, and he laughs at your words.
"I wasn't talking about the chocolate," he grins and you smile when your lips meet once again.

Shirabu:
It's early. Painfully early.
You know that.
But your plans to surprise your busy boyfriend with breakfast in bed are what actually make your body subconsciously jump towards your ringing phone, and you quickly stop the alarm before it could wake him up.
You freeze when you notice that the sound hasn't stopped- and that's when you realize that it's Kenjiro's alarm that's still ringing. He has the bad habit of letting it ring for forever, and it oftentimes happened that you woke up before he did and had to reach for his phone to turn off the persistent little device.
Now, however, he reaches for the phone, his movements just as sleepy and uncoordinated as yours, his messy bed hair adorably sticking into every direction and a tired huff leaving his lips. His body doesn't move for a few seconds, and you only stare at his back, confused why he set an alrm so early- and then he suddenly turns around. His eyes don't look sleepy anymore, it seems like his ability to quickly wake up whenever it's necessary now pays off.
"Why are you awake?"
"No, why are you awake?" You involuntarily reach for one of the strands that hang into his face and push it back, and his hand quickly comes up to presses yours against his cheek.
"You're gonna laugh when I tell you."
"I won't, Kenjiro. I promise."
He raises a brow like he doesn't believe you, but takes a deep breath before he finally answers.
"I wanted to make breakfast in bed for you. As a Valentine's Day gift."
"Really?" You smile and scoot a bit closer to him under the blanket, and he gladly wraps his arms around you and presses you against his chest to prevent you from seeing his reddened cheeks.
"Yes. I know that I've been busy with work lately, but I wanted to show you that I'm still so much in love with you. And that you deserve only the best, and that I will always do my best for you and spoil you."
Your heart skips a beat at his sudden passionate confession, and you quickly pull back to press a kiss against his lips, not caring about your morning breath, and he doesn't seem to care too, judging by how fast and passionately he responds to the kiss.
"I also wanted to make breakfast for you." You confess with hot cheeks, and his lips curl into a teasing grin.
"How about we spend some more time in bed, so I can show you how much I love you, and then we can prepare breakfast together?"
He rasps the words against your neck and is quick to turn you on your back until he's laying right on top of you.
"Sounds like a good plan," you respond and lean in for another kiss.
___________________________
Semi;
"I'm back." You hear this words while you're still humming and finally putting the casserolle into the oven. "I'm in the kitchen!" you yell back and quickly get rid of your pink apron with sweet little cartoons that Semi had gotten for you. You hope that you look nice and presantable now, and that no ingredients are stuck in your hair or somwhere else.
It's your first Valentine's Day together, and you decided to prepare his favorite meal for tonight, as well as dressing up prettily for him. He finally enters the kitchen, his guitar still on his back and a his leather jacket perfectly clinging onto his body. He looks so sexy and handsome, and you can‘t help but to admire him for a few seconds.
"I got something for you." His lips are curled into a soft smile, and you look at the bouquet of flowers in his hand that's impossible to miss due to the sheer size. "They are gorgeous, Eita." You take another step towards him, and he leans down to softly kiss you. "Not as gorgeous as you though, my little star." He scans your outfit quickly, and his gaze stops at your eyes. You shiver and try to hide your reddened cheeks, but he just grins and places the bouquet on the table.
"I got something else for you too. I wrote a song for you."
"Really?" You excitedly smile and look at him with stars in your eyes, and he scratches the back of his head, slightly embarrassed now.
"It contains the word "love" so many times, it's embarrassing actually. But I wrote it for you, and it’s for you only.“
You can't help but to grab his cheeks softly and press a sweet kiss to his lips that he returns instantly.
"I love you, Eita. So, so much." You slightly pull back, until your foreheads are touching, and you look deeply into his eyes to convey your feelings in every possible way.
"I love you too, my y/n."

Seeing your answered ask about metas makes me want to share this list someone made about ORV’s literary references: https://twitter.com/Jomeimei421/status/1806147303004336632
I think this same person also said something about ORV being a blend of low-brow fiction and high-brow literature and I agree. I would like to see a legitimate academic paper referencing or breaking down ORV, and now that I think about it, maybe this has already happened and I just don’t know how to find something like that.
This list is honestly such a great resource, thanks for sharing :)))) <3333
I would add the samguk yusa and samguk sagi to this list tho, even though the references might count as 'myths' or an oral tradition that's the nature of the older historical texts. I think I have a couple breakdowns of the references to the Samguk yusa, a post about ljh's name and the historical ancestors referenced, and some stuff about JttW.
In the concept of high brow and low brow, I agree that ORV is very good at being like very respectful of anything that is a 'story' and I think good at portraying the sort of 'character' that some genres or reading types represent. I think one of my posts is definitely about how the KDJ relationship with his mom is very representative of the sort of evolution of webnovel culture out of classical literature and trauma literature scenes in the sort of 'professional,' established Korean publishing. Also as a Naruto guy I really respect the JttW arc for being like 'hey all middle grade action stories and shounen a little bit comes from JttW tbh.' I also think the premise of ORV is great as sort of the natural conclusion to like American gods or Rick Riordan type justifications for all religions being true bc people believe them: ok, then here's also one man's favorite anime boy being real because he believes in him and he's actually going to punch God now. Oh also a literary reference I guess is that metatron and etc are from the Talmud rabbinic scriptures. Though I think myths about him are mostly from kabbala / oral tradition (which stems from Judaism but even now there are Jewish people who think it's very wrong to call them Jewish beliefs. Part of that is probably that in more modern history kabbala has partially been developed and sort of appropriated by non-jewish people in a way that is kind of similar to orientalizing / mysticizing the more 'normal' Judaic beliefs practiced by wider Jewish communities ((think tiktokkers who are like I Am a Witch doinG Qabala but actually she's basically just writing creepypasta in her brain about things other people actually believe in that she knows nothing about)). At the same time, there is kabbala that naturally developed from people Jewish faith in the same way orphism or other 'occult' beliefs developed out of governmentally/societally enforced/accepted Greek and Roman religions throughout history. Fun fact: Sefer ha-bahir is apparently an influential text in the development of og kabbala and apparently literally describes the idea of transmigration so that is fun.)
Ok besides the historical stuff the media on the list I'm actually exposed to is just Han Kang and then Naruto (I watched some of one piece in middle school but retained very little of it tbh I just know who some of the guys are. Actually I just had a dream where I complimented a guy's one piece shirt and then he asked me if I liked the anime and I had to be like oh... No).
I did some research on YSA's reading 'taste' though and I think it's very fitting because they're realistic books with "literary value" that are like very relevant to society but obscure enough that you wouldn't make up reading them just to impress someone, unlike Han Myungoh claiming 'art of war' is his fave book (that's another lit reference in there somewhere I think? I just remember finding it fitting... It's the type of fit for business men who want to seem macho and smart but actually don't enjoy reading at all... I would say if they said three kingdoms was their favorite I would at least believe they read it or saw an adaptation but like art of war just isn't really a Story it's more like self help? Like there are stories but they're showing 'lessons' about war lol.)

It is far too late at night for me to be digging through my old traditional art. So.
The first arts I ever made of Chara, and Frisk. And also a solitary Chisk too. Back in middle school when I would draw on my phone. I am glad I got these old pieces off of my DeviantArt before I deleted it a couple years ago. Otherwise they would have been. Well. Gone.
Tumblr media
See here a Frara and a Frisk and a Flowey and a Chara and a Chisk. I am pretty sure that is the only time I have ever drawn Flowey. And it is the only time I will EVER draw Flowey.
Tumblr media
Another Frisk and Chara. As you can see. Frisk has grey eyes. And Chara has blue and red eyes. Because I was an edgy middle schooler. And Chara has always been my favorite character. So the highest honor I could ever have bestowed upon them was that classic duality motif.
Tumblr media
A little. Reference for the two that I made for myself. Ah. So sad that Chara doesn't have the ahoge I gave them in the previous drawings.
And finally. Bonus Chisk.
Because. Well. Chisk.
Tumblr media
So. Let's compare my old middle schooler self's designs for them vs my current self's designs. And. Also. As a treat. My first design of Kris from 2019 vs my current design as well.
Ok. First thing's first.
Frisk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So. Like. The way I design Frisk nowadays is in fact 100% based off the way I used to draw them off. Yes, there are some obvious differences. But the suspenders and the short sleeved shirt were, well, you know the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That is always true. Though I will say that the little hearts instead of gold buttons, is also taken from the old design, because I distinctly remember thinking to myself that Frisk should have a heart in the back of the suspenders where they cross over eachother. And also. On the topic of the hair.
The way I do Hero's hair is 100% actually based on old Frisk's hair.
Tumblr media
Because well. Hero is the beta protagonist design for Undertale. And my old Frisk is basically the beta design for my current Frisk. You get it.
Next.
Frara.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah that old design was extremely basic. I don't think I ever used to think about the Unused Human Sprite back then. But. Well. I sure do now. A big glow-up for Frara. And a height reduction. Their current design is very much inspired by the place in Undertale where they can be seen-
Tumblr media
Waterfall!
I think to myself. Well. What would a character confined to a constantly raining place need? A raincoat and rainboots!
I can't like. NOT give them stuff like that. Just wouldn't be true to me.
Chisk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fandom may have forgotten about Chisk in the years. But I will never forget about Chisk. A fanmade fusion of Chara and Frisk. I will never not think about them. They're in my brain like a song I love. Shawty like a melody in my head. CHISK OH CHISK MY LITTLE SCRUNKLE.
Anyway. Not much design notes for Chisk, past or present. Except for that the old design is a blatant ripoff of a design that I have unfortunately very much no source for.
Tumblr media
If anyone knows who the original artist is, please tell me so I can thank them for making such a wonderful image.
Now. Before we get to Chara.
Kris.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well. They got edgier. And their shawl thing got more accurate to their Dark World self. That's all I really have to say aside from FFUCK I AM SUCH A GENIUS FOR MAKING THEIR SHOES THE SAME COLOR AS THE SHADE OVER THEIR EYES. GODDAMN. BIG WIN FOR ME ON THAT ONE. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. HELL YEAH KRIS. YOU'RE A FFUCKING WEIRDO AND A COOL KID.
And finally. Chara!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My original design for them is. Hm. Well. I'll be honest whenever I see a Chara Undertale without the collared shirt and sweater combo going on I get annoyed, even if the one giving them a turtleneck is my own paste self.
Also. The green-grey shorts and boots were based on clothes I actually had at the time. So. Like. I have always been a big projector onto Chara. Shit man. Even and especially nowadays I project onto them. The hair, the collared shirt and sweater combo. It is, unabashedly, very self indulgent. Those are very deliberate choices. The ffucking Roxy LaLonde hair flicks and that combo of sweater and collared shirt is LITERALLY all over characters I draw. My own damn persona, my character Blue, even Blitz with his wild hair I will still default to doing like that in sketches.
Do you know how hard it is for me to not give characters that type of hair. And that collared shirt and sweater type combo. It is. The hardest decision to not do it.
Cutting this post short at here because there is another post I want to make.

Portrait of Vivienne Westwood by Christian Shambenait
It took me a few days, but with the death of icon-goddess-genius Vivienne Westwood, I had to make a post here about her work and how massively influential she was during her lifetime, and why her influence will remain for years to come.
"I take something from the past that has a sort of vitality that has never been exploited – like the crinoline – and get very intense. In the end you do something original because you overlay your own ideas." Vivienne Westwood
Born in 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire, Vivienne Westwood (nèe Swire) did not have a "traditional" path into fashion and design, even though she took a course of jewellery at the Harrow Art School (she thought it was not for her, being a working-class girl), she became a primary school teacher and got married with Derek Westwood, had a kid... But she was a maker of things and a creative mind, and made her own wedding dress and jewellery that she sold at a stall.
Tumblr media
Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood at the Let It Rock store (London, January 1972).
But all of that was about to change when she met Malcolm McLaren. She got divorced, moved with him and had another son. McLaren became the manager of the Sex Pistols and with Westwood, they became a creative duo who dressed the band and became VERY influential during th punk era. We must add the after that they opened a store called SEX, which was the meeting place for the punk scene in London in the 1970s. So, yeah. punk wouldn't look like it does without Vivienne Westwood.
Tumblr media
"Vivienne and Malcolm use clothes to shock, irritate and provoke a reaction but also to inspire change. Mohair jumpers, knitted on big needles, so loosely that you can see all the way through them, T-shirts slashed and written on by hand, seams and labels on the outside, showing the construction of the piece; these attitudes are reflected in the music we make. It's OK to not be perfect, to show the workings of your life and your mind in your songs and your clothes." Viv Albertine
This era of Westwood's design has a lot of collaboration, especially with McLaren, and they produced under the Worlds End label until 1985. These collections have each a theme and a name, and here is when we star seeing Vivienne Westwood's eye and curiosity for historical fashion, as well as nods and details especially from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of course, it was the 80s and all was way more colourful than what we thing of more contemporary Vivienne Westwood, but you can see that EVERYTHING was already there in the period which she dubbed as "New Romantic" with collections like Witches, Punkature, and Pirate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raincoat and belt, from the 1983 Witches collection, Victoria & Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
Ensemble from the 1982 Pirates collection, Victoria & Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
Knitted top from the 1983 Witches collection, featuring Keith Haring's graffiti.
The 1988-1991 era is called "The Pagan Years", and we can see the change of the main looks from punks to girls in clothes that parodied the upper class. And it is then that I think the ultimate Vivienne Westwood is seen: corsets, crinolines, tartan, colourful stripes... Here is when we begin to see the historical references taken to a extreme, mixed with the modern word and sense of humour, while always being perfectly made and patterned and fun for all genders.
Here some of my favourite ones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vivienne Westwood black satin corset with metallic gold pattern, ss 1992 Stays, late 17th-early 18th century, Met Museum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vivienne Westwood autumn/winter 2020.
Fashion illustration on L’Elegant, 1853.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carmagnole Jacket, France, c. 1790 / Sans-culotte Trousers, France, c. 1790, Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Vivienne Westwood, autumn/winter 2021.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Watteau" evening dress, 1996, Vivienne Westwood, Victoria & Albert Museum. "L’enseigne de Gersaint" (detail), Jean-Antoine Watteau.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vivienne Westwood, autumn/winter 2022.
Portrait of Madame X, 1884, John Singer Sargent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Madonna in her Fever video, 1993, wearing Vivienne Westwood. Gold leather corset, sleeves and mini skirt, 'Time Machine' ss 1988, Vivienne Westwood.
Always a creative force and a punk at heart, Vivienne Westwood was also an activist, putting front and center important causes like climate change, or sustainability and transparency in the brand's supply chain.
Tumblr media
Rose McGowan walking the autumn/winter 2019 Vivienne Westwood catwalk.
Tumblr media
Designer Vivienne Westwood looks through the glass toward the media during a photocall at a retrospective exhibition to celebrate her 30 years in the fashion industry, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Tuesday March 30, 2004.
What is your favourite look/garment of this iconic designer? And does it have an historical reference? Let us all know!

hai….i’m back….here to give more modern (plus some general) hcs!! :3
⭑i like to think of john and abi as highschool sweethearts :) But they were pretty on and off, so everyone was surprised when they made it to senior prom (john wore those tuxedo t-shirts)and eventually graduation! they got pregnant with jack a few months after graduating
⭑when it’s time for spring cleaning, DUTCH IS THE LOUDEST MF IN THE HOUSE. he’s blasting the 70s music, waking up everyone in the house very loudly announcing that it’s spring cleaning day…poor hosea, john, and arthur
⭑i like to think charles makes these super pretty bracelets and sells them online :3 some of the gang members got some! they’re very meticulously crafted and he takes pride in his art!
⭑Karen is def a crazy cat lady. She has FOUR OF THEM!!! She’d give three of the cats really pretty names but let Sean name her most recent one…in which he named the poor cat “napkin”
⭑Dutch and Hosea have an unreal amount of hawaiian pattern shirts..it’s crazy. hosea wears them in the spring and summer but dutch wears them year round
⭑For some reason, it’s tradition on Arthur’s birthday to go to Texas Roadhouse (I know he’d FUCK UP that bread they give as appetizers). He usually has his family, an s/o, and a couple friends there :)
⭑Speaking of fucking up rolls…I think Artie in general would just have a guilty soft spot to sweets. His s/o would come back with those rolls or just any pastry or candy and arthur will feel so special and spoiled! He’ll also do the same thing for them in return :) (Or just any kinda fave food they like)
⭑Lenny was a SUPER smart kid in school. I like to think in the modern au he just graduated outta highschool, but he got all of these scholarships and awards for being such a smart kid. He’d def major in some sort of writing or literacy thing in college
⭑Sadie can and will destroy anyone at those bull riding things at restaurants. she’s got a plaque of her name on it at a restaurant she won at!
⭑This is more of a general one, but seeing Arthur and John compared to eachother is so funny…Arthur is like this big bear while John is skinny and dorito shaped
⭑It’s also funny seeing the heights of the vandermatthews (name still in progress) family. From shortest to tallest it goes Dutch (5’8”…short dutch all the way), Hosea (5’10”), John (5’11”), and Arthur (6’2”)
⭑One time John borrowed Dutch’s laptop and clicked on a weird website, giving the laptop a virus. John was grounded for a few days and Arthur didn’t stop teasing him about it
OKAY!!! that’s all i have rn ^^ i think i might be saying too many hcs but i love making them…they’re too fun!! (sorry for showing my arthur favoritism again sighhhh 😭😭)
So sorry it took me several days to get to this, real life has had me busy 😔 but I’m here now and EEEEEEEE so fun and silly!!!!
-I’ve also always seen John and Abi as a high school sweethearts type of thing, I think they broke up and got back together so many times in that immature high school way until like senior year when they just stayed together
-Dutch is that one vine where the guy was dancing to Morning Train by Sheena Easton
-crying real tears rn imagining Charles crafting stuff for his pals🥹🥹🥹🥹 I could see him eventually getting into bigger crafts too
-Listen I’m gonna defend Sean bc I just KNOW that napkin the cat fits her namesake so well. It’s one of those skrunkly white kittens
-Arthur having a sweet tooth is canon in my heart sorry ladies, I think he’d enjoy baking goodies for his friends/partners bc he’s suchhhhh an acts of service/gift giver love language kinda guy
-I think Lenny was just one of those kids in high school that everyone loved. He was nice to everyone and genuinely really smart, sorry haters but he definitely got voted prom king or something. As he should!!!!!!
-Sadie drives a cool truck but not in a douchebag way, like that woman is hauling shit AROUND!!!!!!!!
These are all so fun and so silly! It’s been a rough week so I genuinely enjoyed getting to read these :) yall please never hesitate to blow up my inbox with thoughts like these!!

Lesson 11 - Clothes Make The Characters
Today’s Lesson: Clothes Make The Characters
Today’s Teacher: Swolemates by LummyPix
Hi, I'm back! And by back I mean I had an idea for a lesson and have returned to impart it to the masses before disappearing back into my cave.
I've been reading Swolemates by LummyPix and generally enjoying it- the jokes are generally pretty funny and the story, a college comedy about a gamer jock and the influencer next door, is genuinely unique for the platform. And of the three main gripes I have with it, two of them are minor nitpicks (the character names are all a few letters off from names an actual person might have, the desaturated color palette makes everyone's skin look slightly gray), but one is, I think, more broadly applicable to other comics as well.
Clothing.
Making a comic is hard because in addition to being a writer and a draftsperson, you have to also be a prop designer, actor, set designer, colorist, cameraman, and costumer all in one. That last role in particular is missing from Swolemates, where all of the characters are first year college students that wear plain T-shirts, tank tops, and sweatpants all the time.
Tumblr media
I've been reading a lot of Derek "Menswear Guy' Guy's tweets lately, like many people, and one of the ideas he brings up a lot is that clothing is a language. Your outfit communicates things about you to the people who see you: information about your status, occupation, and personality. A comic that doesn't pay attention to the clothing the characters wear is missing out on an opportunity to tell the reader additional information about their characters, which I feel like is happening here.
The reader is told that Dani is a Popular Girl and Shaye is Alt/Nerdy, and while their hair and makeup reflects those characteristics, their clothing does not. Most of the time, every single character is wearing a plain, solid-color T-shirt. Nobody ever wears a pattern or a shirt with a graphic or text on it.
Tumblr media
You don't! You look like a video game avatar someone stopped customizing after they finished the hair and face! Which is worse!
The makeover arc the above screenshot comes from is not used for the traditional makeover arc reason of showing the reader the protag in many cute outfits, but to allow Alex and Shaye to bond more and show how Alex is so fit and buff regular pants don't fit her. Which is a missed opportunity to find Alex clothes she looks good in that fit her personal style and aesthetic, and that would distinguish her from the rest of the cast.
Tumblr media
The desaturated color palette doesn't help either.
After this sequence, Alex and Dani both go right back to wearing plain solid-color t-shirts, and occasionally tank tops. The makeover and Dani's interest in fashion are both fleeting and temporary.
Tumblr media
A simple change that would increase the realism of everyone's outfits and add personality would be to put graphics on the shirts. Shaye could wear anime merch, Alex could wear video game shirts, Dani could wear college merch. If there's one thing I know about college student fashion, it's that everyone ends up wearing shirts they got for free from their school at random events, and nerdy kids wear shirts about the things they like (as a comics major at art school, I found myself in multiple classes where every single student was wearing a shirt from a comic/movie/game they like.)
Tumblr media
A more involved change would be to assign everyone a general color palette they tend to wear and make sure they wear things with patterns, prints, and accessories, at least occasionally. Shaye could wear skinny jeans, Docs, band wristbands. Alex could wear streetwear that is both comfortable for her and reflects her video game interests.
The makeover sequence also serves to communicate to the reader that the creator is not personally interested in fashion or clothes and will not be considering them in this comic, which is a real shame because, like I said, clothing is an opportunity to show readers more about what kind of people these characters are, and is an important part of character design. The clothes people wear are often not even about what's currently fashionable (especially these days, with current trends cycling faster than a washing machine), but out of a desire to signal that you belong to a particular group. Like how finance bros all wear those fleece vests, and fans of musicians wear shirts from their concerts.
Tumblr media
It's easy to feel intimidated by the amount of history and possibilities fashion opens up in regards to character design, so creators who aren't personally interested in fashion might try to avoid thinking about it because it's easier that way. But if you take the time to do a bit of research and think a bit about what your characters would actually wear, it will pay off.
Also, as a practical consideration, iconic clothes a character wears could become merchandise for your comic later on!
Exercise: Now it's your turn to give your characters a wardrobe overhaul! Draw your characters in their underwear as a base, copy paste that base several times, and draw a few outfits over it. Try to come up with at least 3 daily wear outfits, what the character wears to sleep, a formal look and a first date look. Think about what your characters value in clothing-- comfort, showing off, expressing their personality, belonging to a subculture? Where do your characters get their clothes- do they go shopping with friends, do their parents pick them out, are they wearing a school or work uniform whenever we see them and if so how do they customize that uniform, if they do customize it? Also consider color schemes and recurring motifs.
Webtoon Recs: I want to recommend Cursed Princess Club again because it's not a comic about fashion in any way, but it uses the characters' clothing to communicate information extremely effectively. Everyone's outfits communicate where they're from and what their position is. Everyone from the Pastel Kingdom wears pastels, everyone from the Plaid Kingdom wears plaid, everyone from the Geometric Kingdom wears shapes. Calpernia's crown has a net attached to it to allude to her spider-themed curse. The major characters are also clearly color coded, making it easy to keep track of them in a busy scene. Gwen is green (and her love interest Frederick is a darker green plaid), Lorena is lavender, Maria is powder blue, Jamie is pink. The way they dress reflects their personalities as well, and when special events like balls happen their outfits for those events also help communicate the characters' personalities.
Tumblr media
It's not necessary to focus entirely on fashion and clothes to create outfits for your characters that help tell your story better! Also Cursed Princess Club is just extremely good all around.
A comic that is about fashion and using clothes to express yourself (but also about teen drama and gender/sexuality) that I enjoy is Acception. The main character is a fashion/sewing youtuber who befriends a goth girl in his class, but not everyone around him is as interested in fashion as he is. The goth girl's brother, for example, dresses much more casually and simply than she does, and the character designs for everyone slowly change over the course of the comic as people get different haircuts or teenage growth spurts, or decide to try something new with their style as they get older. I especially like how Iris's outfits frequently incorporate butterfly shapes as something she likes to wear.
Tumblr media
It's cute and funny, and puts a lot of thought into its details despite having a simpler art style than many webtoons.
Clothes are an important part of character design, and too many people neglect to think as much about them as they should.

And a follow up ask: how would you describe the differences and similarities between Koushiro and Iori (as they are my 2 favorites of the Adventure 01 and 02 kids)
Since we were already talking about Iori's traditional upbringing vs. Koushirou's self-imposed correctness causing both of them to be overly polite, I will try to dig into this a little deeper. I was looking for a screenshot of them together, but then I found this pic, which I've never seen before, so I'm gonna use that one:
Tumblr media
About their similarities:
Since Iori is meant to be the heir of the Crest of Knowledge, they're both initially shown to be equally curious people. They both wonder about the whereabouts of the Digital World, what the Chosen Children business is all about - and that's where Koushirou himself notices Iori being a great kouhai for himself, so he offers him advice and guidance whenever he needs it. So yes - the easiest comparison to make is that they're both smart and coming up with ideas that help the others along.
On a purely physical level, when they're initially introduced, they're among the youngest AND shortest members of their respective groups. And it is yet to be seen whether they'll actually surpass any other of the male characters in height.
They're both not only very polite in their speech and approach patterns overall, but also highly responsible, studious, goal-oriented and resourceful and want to do things right - to the point of losing themselves in details and (self) doubts, when things are not going according to plan.
They both have strong moral codes, are very kind at heart and highly opinionated; they definitely know what they don't like (and are more or less able to put their feet down about it, but sometimes they get overlooked by others, unfortunately).
Despite usually being level-headed, they can both get snappy/angry/witty (read: EMOTIONAL) if someone annoys them/grinds their gears.
In regards to the former point: Something they have in common I wish didn't exist to that extent is that official art tends to depict them as "too emotionless" - which definitely contradicts their multi-faceted personalities in the anime. Yes, as mentioned, they are more level-headed and calm, less outgoing than other characters - but they can have their cheerful moments with the people closest to them (including their Digimon partners and characters such as Taichi and Takeru).
Family and their bonds mean more to them than one might assume at first, since they are generally more closed-off about their private issues.
Also very similar in choosing simple, work/school-compliant clothing (read: shirt, pants, tie, nothing TOO colourful, even if they have preferences in their colours being either more muted or autumn-based).
About their differences:
As mentioned above, they are both highly curious in nature - however, when it comes to the things they want to figure out, their approaches are a little different. While Koushirou approaches everything in a mostly rational manner, Iori's questions are a little more philosophical. While he tries to be rational too, his black-white thinking tends to actually cause him to be more emotional than he'd like to. (Which shouldn't be surprising if you encounter artificially created Digimon that destruct everything mindlessly while asking about the meaning of life... Granted, Koushirou approached an entity like that too, but he ALSO tried to answer to that one more rationally...)
Despite their polite attitudes, the respective origins of their behaviours are a little different. Koushirou's politeness was self-imposed, he forced himself to act like "the perfect son" towards his adoptive parents, not knowing why he was adopted, who his biological parents were, who he even was, and so he kept a distance to everyone else, not knowing how to interact or let alone understand others when he didn't even understand himself. When he reconciled with his adoptive parents, they let him know that he could be what- and whovever he wanted to be and he's still be loved. While Iori's biological father had passed away as well, he was mainly raised in a very traditional household, being taught the customs of kendo - and developing a very black-and-white-ish moral code at first. He may have a hard time understanding other's reasonings if they don't align well with his own - but that also applies to Koushirou if somebody is not acting in reasonable ways. So something I would assign to both of them again is that they slowly but steadily have to learn to pick up cues and to be more compassionate and less rational due to their experiences. Basically - the people they willingly surround themselves with FORCE them both to think outside the box naturally.
They're both overthinkers, mainly keep their emotional states to themselves - however, if Iori bursts out, he absolutely DOES burst out. Koushirou on the other hand is more prone to ramble and talk about non-emotional things he actually wants others to know about, whereas Iori is not that generally chatty at all.
Despite "The Beginning" suggesting otherwise, Iori used to be depicted as being not very computer-crazy - he had a computer, yes, but Miyako was the one who fixed it a lot and used laptop usually, paralleling Koushirou more closely in that regard.
Speaking of "The Beginning", it can be assumed that Iori is more athletic at this point in time in comparison to Koushirou - not to call the latter an office-dweller, especially since he DOES coordinate the Chosen Children business and may participate in that as well. But Iori, despite studying hard to become a lawyer, is definitely actively putting in the energy to stay physically fit as well with kendo training.
Tl;dr, I'm not sure if that makes sense and I hope I didn't forget anything crucial.
