oooh pls tell me more about the menu
Oh! Thank you for asking about this one!
The Menu (not to be confused with the 2022 Ralph Fiennes film of the same title, they are VERY different) is a fic that I predict will get a fair amount of hits, few kudos, and fewer comments, but I. am. in. love. with. it. It's so damn fun and it's getting so much of my attention that it's nearly finished.
This again was typed with haste, so forgive any typos, but this section pretty much captures the gist of the fic:
“Declan’s making business decisions,” Ronan told Adam, pushing himself up from leaning on his elbows as Adam pushed himself off the doorframe and crossed the kitchen. “And business decisions include reading—” Adam stopped when he reached the island and he flipped an opened cookbook closed “—Classic Irish Cuisine.” “I told him it was stupid.” “Yeah, I’m sure that’s exactly what you said.” Adam glanced at Ronan—they both knew Ronan had taken every ounce of color out of what he’d said to Declan—before he let the cookbook fall back open. Starting to flip through it, he paid closer attention to the recipes than the glossy photos that accompanied them, the opposite of Ronan’s approach. “So why are you reading Classic Irish Cuisine?” Adam pulled another cookbook to him. “And the Complete Irish Pub Cookbook?” “He wants to revamp the menu,” Ronan replied, air quoting his older brother. This confused Adam more than Ronan being home, because not only did he furrow his eyebrows again, but he turned down the corners of his thin lips. “You guys don’t really have a menu to revamp.” “Yeah, I told him that, too.” Ronan closed the cookbook in front of him as Adam moved around the island to stand beside him. “But he has some idea to turn the place into a fancy ass pub, and becoming a fancy ass pub means we can’t throw frozen chicken fingers and french fries in the deep fryer and call it a day.”

Ive got a slowly growing google doc of depressipes that i will one day put together and share because...... i love cooking but every single recipe blog or cookbook in the world is like. So you're gonna need two hours of spare time, 1/20th of a rare and expensive ingredient, an air fryer, crockpot, instapot, and the mental health to wash a sinkful of dishes every time you cook...... Even the budget recipe blogs are like "this should only cost you $1.50/serving because you're only using ONE saffron thread!" Like girl I can't go to the store and buy one saffron thread. Also it's always scaled for a family of four like what if I'm cooking for My Own Ass

jes can you talk about like what kinds of things you make in your air fryer? i know a lot of people who love theirs but whenever i ask what they use it for, it seems to be a lot of meat, which is not helpful for me to imagine integrating into my own kitchen!
steph I resisted the air fryer for so long because I was like why would I need it? I have an oven and a toaster oven I can make anything I need to make that way. but oh my god I was WRONG and I am quickly becoming obsessed with this little guy (my only regret now is that I didn’t buy a slightly larger one). the number one thing I use it for is making perfect flawless crispy tofu in 10-12 min with virtually no mess and tbh it would be worth it for that use alone—I now eat tofu multiple times a week whereas before I ate it like maybe every other month because it was such a pain and so messy to bake it in the oven (which is the only tofu texture I really like). I have recently started branching out to try roasting other things in there, like some excellent roasted sweet potato cubes that were ready in under 15 min (which would’ve taken 30+ min in my oven). I think you can make really elaborate meals in there… I got this vegan air fryer cookbook from the library and I’m like what what?? how??? as I flip through the pages. but for me honestly it’s sooooo useful just for quick roasting + perfect tofu. I have been fully converted and I think you would love it too.

Why Men Kill Themselves. An interesting article from former AoM podcast guest Will Storr that describes a theory of “social perfectionism” that makes some men more likely to kill themselves. According to researcher Rory O’Connor, at the same time that modernity has increased our expectations of what it means to live a good life, it’s also created “more opportunities for men to feel like failures.”  The Digital Workplace Is Designed to Bring You Down. An interview highlighting the thought and work of another AoM podcast guest, Cal Newport. In it, Cal explains the things that are getting in the way of our productivity, one of which, of course, is our saturation with communication tools. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I was toting up the number of different apps I use for communicating and collaborating (both personally and professionally) and it’s at seven. Keeping track of all of them is definitely a pain in the rear. For more insights on this subject, check out our podcasts with Cal on email overload and the quest to be a digital minimalist. Tasty Shreds. There’s a genre of TikTokers and Reel makers that consist of bros showing other bros how to make delicious high-protein, low-calorie meals that are great for those counting macros. Kyle Smith of Tasty Shreds fame is one of these dudes. I haven’t made any of his recipes yet (seems like I need to get me an air fryer first), but it’s just fun to see what healthier twists he comes up with for classic craveable bro food, like the crispy chicken sandwich. I bought his cookbook and hope to try some of the recipes soon. The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring. Our family reads a book out loud together every night, and we’ve together enjoyed several of John Bellairs’ spooky novels over the years. We read The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring (not to be confused with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) last fall and it was my favorite family read aloud of 2022.  Quote of the Week To will and not to do when there is opportunity, is in reality not to will; and to love what is good and not to do it, when it is possible, is in reality not to love it. —Emanuel Swedenborg The post Odds & Ends: January 27, 2023 appeared first on The Art of Manliness. http://dlvr.it/ShXhSy

Air fryer is one hot small kitchen appliance
Check out my latest column
Do you know which small kitchen appliance is hot (pun intended) …Air fryers.
Tumblr media
Walk down the kitchen section at any store, and you’ll see so many different models, sizes and versions with multiple features.
Why the popularity? Perhaps it is their ability to cook food quickly with the results being a crispy texture resembling deep-frying minus all the oil and calories. Perfect for health-conscious eaters.
They can be used to prepare an array of foods, even desserts such as fried Oreo cookies. Cleanup is a cinch as compared to deep fryers. The internet, with its plethora of air-frying cooking groups, contributes to the popularity of the device.
If space for yet another appliance is a concern, the combination air fryer might be what fits the bill. It integrates the utility of an air fryer with features of a toaster oven, broiler and convection oven.
When I went shopping for an air fryer, I originally thought, “Oh, why am I purchasing another gadget that will probably follow what happened with my hardly-used-bread maker. First, I stored it in the garage, thinking I might use it again…that never happened, so eventually I gave it away.”
That’s not the case here. I have been satisfied with the cooking results and have found recipes both online and in cookbooks that are easy to prepare, are healthy and have the texture and taste of many fried foods that I crave.
I purchased a combination air fryer for my parents, who were reluctant to use an air fryer. They have become fans and don’t use their traditional oven at all now.
In this article, found at https://cnb.cx/3UzpOnY, according to Nestle’s Adam Graves, nearly 60% of U.S. households own an air fryer. It also states, “In 2022, U.S. consumers spent nearly $1 billion buying air fryers, up 51% from 2019.” Perhaps this is not as much of a fad as some people might think given these numbers.
Complementing the growing interest in this cooking technique is the publishing of cookbooks dedicated to cooking with the appliance. Newly added to my collection is “I Love My Air Fryer Easy Recipes Book” by Robin Fields (2024, Adams Media, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, $17.99)
With 175 recipes, you’ll get the most out of your air fryer and create delicious dishes with minimal effort. The first chapter is an introduction to air fryer cooking, including how to choose just the right appliance to fit your needs.
The author writes: “Air fryers of at least 6 quarts are perfect for a family of four.”
Her recipes were developed and tested using this size with cooking temperatures between 320 and 400 degrees. You’ll learn what accessories to use to enhance your air frying experience. The recipes take 30 minutes or less using common ingredients.
“Use these recipes as a springboard, and always remember to let your creativity roam free in the kitchen,” she writes. “Season your dishes intuitively and swap out ingredients where it makes sense for your own preferences.”
Now, it is time get air frying with these recipes from the book.

Hands-on time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Serves 4
Ingredients:
1 medium zucchini, cut into ½ -inch-thick slices
1 medium yellow summer squash, cut into ½-inch-thick slices
4 ounces cremini mushrooms (also called baby bellas), halved
1 cup small broccoli florets
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon dried oregano
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8  teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Directions:
Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees. Place zucchini, squash, mushrooms and broccoli in a large bowl. Drizzle olive oil over vegetables and sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, oregano, black pepper and red pepper flakes, then toss to coat.
Scrape coated vegetables into a 6 inch round baking pan, then place in air fryer basket. Cook 10 minutes, stirring twice during cooking time. When done, vegetables will be tender. Serve warm.
Freezer friendly: If you’re prepping this dish to freeze, reduce the cook time by 5 minutes. This will ensure that your vegetables do not overcook when you reheat them. Par cooking (partially cooking) will help remove some of the excess moisture from the vegetables and reduce ice crystal formation during freezing. To reheat from frozen, preheat the air fryer to 300 degrees and cook in a greased baking dish for 15 minutes, until warmed.

Variety is the Spice of Keto Life
One of the biggest concerns I had starting keto was recipe fatigue. Would I be stuck eating the same bland, repetitive meals day in and day out? This cookbook quickly squashed that worry. Boasting over 100 recipes, it offers a fantastic selection for every meal of the day. From succulent breakfast frittatas to flavorful chicken wings, hearty low-carb pizzas to decadent (but still keto-friendly!) desserts, there's something to satisfy every craving. I love that the book caters to different dietary preferences as well, with vegetarian and even some pescatarian options.
Effortless Cooking, Even for Beginners
While I wouldn't call myself a complete novice in the kitchen, elaborate recipes can be intimidating. The beauty of The Keto Air Fryer Cookbook lies in its simplicity. The instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow. Each recipe comes with a handy prep time and cook time estimate, making it perfect for busy weeknights or when you're planning a special keto feast. The ingredient lists are straightforward, and the cookbook even offers substitution suggestions for some items, ensuring flexibility based on what you have on hand.
Beyond the Recipes: A Keto Ally
This isn't just a recipe book; it's a valuable resource for anyone new to the keto diet. The introduction provides a helpful overview of the ketogenic diet, its benefits, and essential tips for success. There's also a section dedicated to using your air fryer effectively, including handy charts for cooking times and temperatures for various ingredients. This comprehensive approach makes The Keto Air Fryer Cookbook a one-stop shop for all your keto air fryer needs.
The Verdict: A Must-Have for Keto Air Fryer Enthusiasts
Overall, I'm incredibly impressed with The Keto Air Fryer Cookbook (Digital - Ebooks). It's packed with delicious and healthy recipes, making it easy to stick to my keto goals while enjoying flavorful food. The clear instructions and helpful guidance make it perfect for both beginners and seasoned cooks. let's talk recovery...and the many ways you can begin to refuel and recharge your body
*the topic of today’s video is recovery. this is from my perspective as a professional dancer and athlete, however, you don’t have to be a professional to gain insight from this post
✨ i ignored recovery for a while and just kept pushing and pushing myself until one day, i literally had nothing left to give. now, i take recovery very seriously. 💖 here are some ideas how you can incorporate recovery into your daily life or however it fits into your routine
keep reading! 👇
higherDOSE
let’s talk about why higherDOSE is an integral part of my recovery process
- the PEMF go-mat: i LOVE this device! this supports improved muscle recovery and makes me feel great after my workouts! the heat adds a relaxing touch. another reason why i love it…it helps me to sleep better. i’m a very bad sleeper so this is a game changer for me!
- the red light face mask - i not only love this mask because it’s helps my skin, but the red light is a total mood booster! one of my struggles as professional athlete is being in a positive mental space. it’s very easy for me to feel like i’m not good enough or i haven’t worked out hard enough. so having devices that help to boost my mood, seriously do so much for me! PLUS…i’m glowing once this mask is done working its magic!
youtube
- sauna blanket (not seen in today’s video) - i usually use my sauna mat on practice days. once my dance practice is over, i’ll spend about 40 mins in the sauna blanket and follow it up with a cold shower. this helps me to detox my body and also boost my mood tremendously!

a wholesome lifestyle and positive relationship with food
what i’m about to tell you will take a commitment to you and your body, but in my opinion it was totally worth it; meal prepping. meal prepping forced me to look at what I was eating and intentionally plan out my meals. this has led me to intake more wholesome foods that are nourishing to my body instead of stopping on-the-go and buying random breakfast sandwiches or fast food.
here’s how i did it…i first began by looking up recipes and seeing if there were healthier versions of foods i tend to be drawn to. for example, my dunkin donut and starbucks breakfast sandwiches are now replaced with breakfast sandwiches i learned how to make. i just take one out of the freezer the evening before, and in the morning i pop it in the air fryer…DONE
by no means am i a trained or chef, baker, or cook. i took some time to watch youtube, do some trial and error, and just figure out what recipes and meals worked for me. here are some websites and social accounts where i gained inspiration for recipes (keep in mind, sometimes i substituted some ingredients based on dietary restrictions, etc.). at the end of the day, you need to do what is right for your body.
want to shop cookbooks? here are some i love 👇
reading books and resting your brain
as a believer in resting your brain, taking a break from social media is not only a suggestion, but absolutely neccessary…(and yes, that’s coming from someone who uses social media as a positive platform). this quote (i did not quote it exactly…sorry…) can apply to A LOT…too much of a good thing isn’t always good.
let’s talk about why I (and many others) suggest taking breaks from social media:
it can be overwhelming and cause your brain to process a lot in short amounts of time
takes you away from the present moment and opportunities that are happening in the here and now
looking at accounts that make you feel less than, sad, or invaluable is going to bother you to a certain extent
taking in too much negative news could bring you into a bad thought process
mean people writing and commenting mean things on your posts or on posts of others can be damaging no matter how strong you feel you are
here are some positive accounts i like to follow:
what can you do instead of scrolling social media? here is my favorite idea…reading books. i’m talking paperback and hardcover books. not a nook, not another electronic device..a good “old-fashioned” book…and yes, an audiobook is also a good idea too! here are some of my current favs!

My Obsession with Small Kitchen Appliances
Not long ago, I had a pinch me moment…
I opened my computer and saw an email from QVC asking if I was interested in collaborating!! Of course, right away, I replied “YES”!
For some reason, I never thought about shopping online with QVC, but it’s so amazing! They literally have anything and everything you could possibly imagine!
My assignment was to do a culinary post (right up my alley) and I was so onboard for coming up with something fun and fabulous for the holidays using small (ish) kitching appliances from the QVC website! I decided on a pizza oven (not exactly indoor), a Kitchenaid Mixer, a nugget icemaker and a combination Convection/Air Fryer countertop appliance from Ninja for my post. Keep scrolling…
I truly love what I do and when something like working with QVC comes along, I get so excited and then…I get nervous! I want to do a great job and come up with something unexpected and this time, I think I nailed it! I spent almost an entire day wrapping boxes as background props because it’s just not time to decorate for Christmas and I knew I could stash them in the basement to use later.
I know some influencers are already in full blown holiday mode and that’s fine, but I do like to take one holiday at a time if possible. My solution was to wrap lots of boxes and store them in the basement to use again as props for pictures, etc. (this is the life of an influencer).
The boxes looked amazing and now it was time to come up with how to display the products without actually making videos of using each one because that would have taken way too long and a reel can only last 90 seconds.
I choose to demonstrate only trusted brands such as Frigidaire, Kitchen Aid and Ninja. The small air fryer I currently use is by Ninja and I’ve totally loved it and I’ve had my Kitchenaid Mixer for over 30 years now…so I knew these brands would live up to their reputation and I felt comfortable promoting them.
I’ve been wanting a pizza oven for as long as I can remember, and when we remodel our kitchen in 2024, we’re planning to build one outside, but for now, this one from Ninja is amazing! Itt does so much more than make pizza…you can roast anything, including a 12 pound turkey. It does comes with a cookbook filled with fabulous and easy recipes and just looking through it makes me hungry!
Now on to the Convection/Air Fryer from Ninja…
While I do love my small Ninja Air Fryer, sometimes it’s just a little too small! I would much prefer to cook everything in one batch to cooking multiple batches…especially when I’m making chicken tenders for my grandsons! This oven is a combination convection oven/air fryer so you can make muffins and casseroles and you can also air fry anything! It’s really such a great appliance that it may just replace your oven…especially if you’re an empty nester and are now only cooking for two people!
Having said that, I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to cooking for two, but there are many nights when this Ninja Airfryer/Convection oven would make my life so much easier!
The Frigidaire Nugget Ice Maker…
These little chewable nugget ice makers are all the rage right now and everyone wants one (including my 3 son-in-laws). This one from Frigidaire is compact, quiet and makes up to 44 pounds of ice in 24 hours. It’s so convenient and makes any drink taste better! Before I got my nugget ice maker, I used to keep a bag of ice from Sonic in the freezer, but now, I have this ice on demand and it’s fabulous!
The Kitchenaid Mixer…
As I said above, I’ve had my Kitchen Aid mixer for over 30 years and it still works just as well as it did the day I got it! Back then, it only came in white, but now, you can get these mixers in so many different colors and I’m loving this stainless steel one that matches any decor. Every cook needs a Kitchenaid mixer…it’s the gold standard of mixers. The attachments are universal…I purchased the pasta maker attachment not long ago and it fit my “antique mixer”. My youngest daughter Sarah has my mothers mixer and it’s even older than mine and still going strong!
I’m so grateful that I get to get up everyday and do what I love and I’m honored to work with companies like QVC! This was such a fun collaboration and I hope you’ve enjoyed this post!

Summer 2023 Cooking and Baking
Over the past week, I’ve been doing a fair amount of cooking and baking. Thus in this post, I’ll be sharing a few of the recipes I’ve used.
First, I made my favorite buttermilk pancakes. I love making these ahead, freezing them on a sheet pan, and then storing them in the freezer in Ziplock bags. They make a great breakfast or snack as you can just pop them in the toaster and top with peanut butter. This really takes me back to the fall 2020 semester as during that semester I’d often eat my peanut butter buttermilk pancakes in between my morning classes.
Tumblr media
Next up I made a double batch of chocolate chip cookies. I simply followed the recipe on the back of the chocolate chip bag. My favorite chocolate chips are the Ghirardelli semi-sweets, but this time I just used the regular Nestlé Toll House ones. The back-of-the-bag recipes are identical (except for when you add the vanilla extract).
Tumblr media
Next, I started on the potato salad dressing by first making some homemade mayonnaise. This recipe also uses buttermilk which is why I was able to make the pancakes.
For Friday dinner, I made cheesy polenta, parmesan-crusted air fryer chicken thighs, and asparagus. For my cheesy polenta, I start with the basic recipe on the back of the Bob’s Red Mill Yellow Corn Polenta bag and finish with a little butter and cheddar cheese. As for the asparagus, I just cooked it up in a covered skillet with a little olive oil and water.
Tumblr media
I didn’t follow this next recipe very closely but made a similar sausage with peppers and onions dish. I used the same core ingredients but made up my own ratios, cut up the cooked sausage into bitesize pieces,  and deglazed the pan with white wine.
Finally, as a fun summer dessert, I made strawberry shortcakes. The linked recipe isn’t the exact same as the one I used (from my Baking Ilustrustated cookbook) but is nearly identical and is also from America’s Test Kitchen. The shortcakes came out great and we had some delicious local strawberries. I forgot to photograph the full dessert but shown below are some of the leftover biscuits.

REVIEW
The ‘I Love My Air Fryer’ Cooking for One Recipe Book by Heather Johnson
175 Easy and Delicious Single-Serving Recipes, from Chicken Parmesan to Pineapple Upside-Down Cake and More
Having wanted to buy an air fryer but not really knowing what to look for, this book seemed perfect for me to read and review. I was pleased to find that the information was relevant and provided the information I was looking for related to oven vs basket air fryers. It also provided the ‘why’ of buying one and it will be what I buy when I replace my toaster oven soon. The many functions it replaces from deep frying to toasting and baking all sound perfect and the one electrical appliance will be perfect for my husband and me.
The book begins with an introduction and important information, tips, and suggestions for cooking with an air fryer. It provides optional accessories and how they would be used if purchased. THE RECIPES ARE APPETIZERS AND SNACKS, SIDES, POULTRY, BEEF AND PORK, SEAFOOD A ND FISH, VEGETARIAN AND DESSERTS. Every recipe includes calories and that is important to me since calorie counting is something that I do. The tips on how to purchase say small peppers instead of large ones to avoid waste, were informative. The recipes also sounded delicious and provided some healthy options along with comfort and more decadent foods.
I believe this is a book that I would enjoy having in my kitchen…along with an air fryer, and may request my daughter bring it to me for my birthday this year.
Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for the ARC – this is my honest review.

I Lost 42 Lbs On A Plant-Based Diet… Now I’m Giving You The Exact Fat-Melting Recipes I Used
Dear Friend,
We all know that one annoying person who can eat whatever they like without gaining an ounce.
Not only can they indulge guilt-free in whatever snack or dessert tempts their taste buds…
They can even go back for seconds without any fear those calories will end up on their hips, thighs, or tummy.
And truthfully, I used to be super envious of anyone like that.
I was convinced they were just genetically blessed… or that they’d sold their soul to the devil in exchange for a magical metabolism.
Meanwhile, if I even looked at a slice of pizza, I swear I gained a couple of pounds.
That was until about 3 years ago, when I discovered a new way of eating that changed everything.
And for the first time in my life, I was losing weight and loving my reflection in the mirror without starving myself.
That new way of eating, of course, was a plant-based diet.
But not just any plant-based diet. I’m talking about delicious recipes like:
Apple Cinnamon Pancakes
Crispy Waffles
Sweet Potato Sliders
Portobello Pot Roast
Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies
Today, I want to share these exact recipes with you… plus 100+ more that are just as delicious as they are healthy.
