REVIEW
Shadow at the Morgue by Cara Devlin
Spencer & Reid Mysteries #1
Excellent introduction to a new historical fiction series that has me eager to see what happens next.
What I liked: * Leonora “Leo” Spencer: orphaned at nine, lost parents and two siblings, taken in by Uncle Claude and Aunt Flora Feldman, morgue assistant to her uncle, photographic memory, unconventional, will no doubt grow and mature a lot as the series progresses
* Jasper Reid: Detective Inspector, adopted by Chief Superintendent Gregory Reid when young, from the streets, an orphan, bright, educated, intelligent, rule follower, intriguing, tries to comply with social conventions, courting Constance Hayes
* Tibia: the morgue cat, shows up at unexpected times
* Gerald Reid: warm, caring, lost his wife and children tragically, excellent at his job, dying
* The plot, pacing, setting and writing
* That I became immersed in the story and cared about the outcome
* Wanting to find out more about the backstories of Leonora and Jasper – who killed Leonora’s family and who Jasper’s family was
* Watching the mystery unfold, the clues and threads to be tugged, the way it all came together at the end with no loose ends left hanging
* Having a feeling that eventually Leo and Jasper will ed up together and wanting to watch it happen
* The supporting characters and wondering how they and the hints about the past will all come together in future books
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how difficult the lives of the poor and what some suffered
* Thinking about the corruption and evil there was then and how much of it still exists today
* Having to wait for the next book
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

An acquaintance with death Haunted by the unsolved murder of her family fifteen years ago, Leonora Spencer has always been familiar with death. And now, as an assistant to her uncle in his London morgue, she uses her photographic memory to catalogue details for his coroner’s reports. When a thief steals a seemingly worthless locket off a young woman’s corpse but leaves valuable jewels behind, Leo is determined to understand why—even if it means going against Detective Inspector Jasper Reid’s express orders to keep her nose out of it. A closely guarded past Born and bred on the streets, Jasper Reid’s recent promotion to the detective’s branch at Scotland Yard is a long step up from his murky past, and he’s resolved to prove he earned his chance fair and square. The last thing he needs is a convoluted case concerning the well-known eccentric LeoSpencer. And to make matters worse—the criminals he once associated with as a lad may also be involved. A murderer closing in When the missing locket and a handful of suspicious deaths point to a mysterious buried object that could ruin a prominent figure, Jasper grudgingly accepts Leo’s help to locate it. But after another break-in at the morgue, they realize someone is watching them, and the more they uncover about a deadly blackmail plot, the closer Leo and Jasper get to becoming the killer’s next targets. Shadow at the Morgue is the first book in Cara Devlin’s new Spencer & Reid historical mystery series.

When I Disappear by Amanda McKinney
As I began to read I thought, “This seems familiar” and then found that I had read it in its original telling. I kept reading quickly and found it still to be a thrilling story though I already knew how it would end.
What I liked: * Rhett: convicted of murder, carpenter, served twenty years in prison, wants to find the person who framed him, seemed to be a good man, liked him and hoped things would work out for him eventually…would enjoy follow-up on his story
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * That the story is told from three perspectives: Sylvia Stone, Rhett Cohen, and through Marjorie Stone’s journal
* Jesse’s thread and how he did a turnaround
* That there were people that were admirable like Billy and Detective Young * How twisted, dark, and grim it proved to be * That the murders were solved * That it made me think, and care, and be glad I can enter this type of story without having to live it in real time * The animals though I wondered who took care of Tango when Rhett went to jail and who took Shirley in later in the story * All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Knowing that evil people and deeds in this story do happen in real life Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more by this author? Definitely! Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

In Need of a Cowboy
By Linda Lael Miller & Heather Graham
Two couples find their mates in this duet of cowboy romances ~ Fun quick easy reads that see perfect pairings after a bit of suspense ~ Great way to escape for a little while.
In ASK ME AGAIN by Linda Lael Miller the story revolves around Gideon, a pre-teen dumped by his mother on his biological father after experiencing what must have been a difficult time with his addicted mother. Jack is more than ready to take on the responsibility of his son, refurbishing the ranch he bought, and giving back to the community. Into the mix appears Harper who is a skilled counsellor and social worker who will become a support as well as a romantic interest for Jack. The romance between Jack and Harper is fast but seems “right” with only a bit of suspense before the HEA ending. Star Rating: 3-4
In THE COWBOY by Heather Graham we see two undercover agents making snap judgments about one another only to find that what they thought was true really was not. Adrien and Vicky work together to take down a kidnapping drug dealer and many of his cohorts before the end of the story. They seem to know quickly that they are meant for one another as do those they work with. This was a bit more suspenseful than the Miller’s story and filled with more characters that I wanted to know more about. Star Rating: 3-4

Old flames reignite in Sunrise Cove in this charming enemies-to-lovers, second-chance, small-town, forced-proximity love story about family, friendships, and true love from New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis. When Olive Porter’s off-the-grid parents go missing, she reluctantly seeks out Noah Turner, her ex and the only person she both trusts implicitly and not at all. As a special investigative agent for the National Park Service, Noah’s used to living under intense pressure. Or he was until he got injured on the job. Now unhappily recuperating at home while being smothered by his loving but nosy family, he’d love nothing more than a good distraction. So when Olive shows up looking like a million bucks, he has to do a gut and heart check. Because nope, no matter what, he can’t fall for her again, the woman who once blew up his entire life and never looked back. How ironic then that his own personal hell (Olive) is also his ticket out of town. The question is, will the risk be worth the reward?

Highland Destroyer by Kathryn Le Veque
Highland Legion #2
Runaway couple leave their betrothed behind but is it a curse or a blessing for those that do not marry the two that run away?
What I liked: * Evie: younger sister, bullied, betrayed, stronger than she thinks, truthful, caring, kind, will stand up for what she wants ~ and she wants Darrien
* Darrien: second son of Lares, has a temper, strong, wise, works for Robbie Stewart, dutiful but only to an extent, loves his family, generous, knows he wants Evie for his wife
* Watching the interest and respect felt by Evie and Darrien grow once they were released from their betrothal contracts ~ They are perfect for and with one another
* Reading a full-length novel by an author I’ve enjoyed novellas of before
* The way the author put in enough of the backstory to make this easily stand on its own
* Mabel: the mother of Darrien, strong, force to be reckoned with, wants what is best for her children, able to get her point across, really liked her
* The way Evie’s father’s eyes were opened to a few things and how he changed at least a bit by the end of the story
* That there was no sugar-coating to make Emilia better than she was
* That Luke did the right thing in the end…maybe
* That Karma worked things out for both couples and the way the author let us know just what that happened to be in the epilogue
* Knowing that there will be another book in the series and that I’ve found an author I would like to read again.
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how the offspring in this era, male and female, had little to say about their destinies as all was in the hands of their fathers
* Thinking about what REALLY makes a person like Emilia…

Welcome to Book Two in the exciting HIGHLAND LEGION series! When a betrothal is broken by a wayward bride, Darien dun Tahr finds himself in an awkward... and unknowingly dangerous… position. Lies, secrets, and betrayal abound in Scotland in this passionate tale of true love! Darien, the second son of Lares dun Tarh, finds himself betrothed to a wealthy lass from a good Scottish family. His new bride, a high-strung and vain woman, is insulted by his apathy, leaving a crack in the relationship between her family and his. Emelia Moriston is a troublemaker and always has been, but not as much as she is when she realizes Darien isn’t falling at her feet. Not that it matters, because she doesn’t want him, anyway. She wants her sister’s betrothed. On the eve of Emelia and Darien’s wedding, the bride and her sister’s intended elope, leaving devastation in their wake. Darien is truthfully relieved that he doesn’t have to marry the demanding Emelia, but he doesn’t expect to find himself in the position of comforting her sister. The fair and sweet Eventide. Evie Moriston couldn’t be any more different from her sister. A kind and beautiful lass, she was betrothed to a son from the powerful Cannich family. But he’s left her and although Evie wasn’t in love with him, the humiliation is more than she can bear until Darien gives her what comfort he can. Then, she begins to realize why she wasn’t so keen on her Cannich husband. It was because he lacked everything that Darien has. And so, the love story… and the heartache… begin. Join Darien and Evie in a rip-roaring tale that sees the wayward bride return with tales of a dead lover and lies that she uses to try and tear two families apart. In the Highlands, where blood is often strongest bond men hold, Darien and Evie find that passion, and love, is stronger still. Stronger than the lies that try to break it. Airson a h-uile àm. The Naga Princess’s Soldier Mate by Robin O’Connor
Serpents of Serant #7
What a splendid way to spend the way and leave behind any worries and concerns ~ Loved returning to Serant and watching Reid and Sazzie as they find their HEA.
What I liked: * Sazzie: alien Naga princess, bullied when young, survivor of many fights, scarred, lethal, doesn’t enjoy violence, learns information that is helpful, attracted to Reid, intriguing
* Reid: warrior, nanobot-enhanced, has died and returned in the past, human, resilient, survivor or betrayal, deceptively strong, heals quickly, attracted to Sazzie
* The way each book in the series builds a better understanding of Serant and those that inhabit it
* That I can see Reid and Sazzie happy together
* The story of the Ayala Sazzie tried to save that began the book and the circle back round to it later
* Learning a bit about Reid’s backstory
* Getting to see some of the characters from previous books
* Shaman-Healers and the good they do
* Being able to dislike the Naga King and his tribe…along with a few others
* The welcome Sazzie received from her brother when she and Reid returned to Haven
* Plot, pacing, setting, and writing that allowed me to return and also provided enough information to be a standalone story
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how even in an alien space romance there are evil aliens with qualities reminiscent of humans

He calls me beautiful in his husky, damaged voice. Kind. A Naga Queen has never been called kind… Sazzie I have hidden who I am from everyone my whole life. Turned myself into something I a fighter, a brawler, a princess worthy of the Thunder Rock throne. Then I meet Reid… A human male. A kindness in his dark eyes that I do not understand. His body, a work of art—muscles, power, and sigils that don’t glow but sit like black ink tattoos on his skin. When he says I’m beautiful despite my scars, when he says I’m worthy of more than a life full of fights, I believe him. But not everyone is willing to let me forget who I am—who I was always meant to an heir to the throne. And they’ll kill me to get what they want. Reid I’ve died before. It’s not so bad. Third time’s the charm, right? But when I wake up to the face of an angel, it’s not because I found the end. This is only the beginning. Battle-hardened Sazzie hides a soft, vulnerable heart and a caring nature that would be stomped out—destroyed—if anyone found out. For too long, she’s had to protect herself. No more. I will be her shield, her sword forged in fire. I’ll be her soldier, and I’ll kill anyone who dares to threaten my woman. As her rivals circle and threaten, I’ll fan the flames between us. Protect her, even as I claim her as mine. This is Book Seven in the Serpents of Serant series. REVIEW
To Win a Viscount’s Heart by Anna St. Claire
The Rakes of Mayhem #5
Sweet second chance romance that allows Gerald and Selena to mature and come into their own before meeting that second time.
What I liked: * Viscount Gerald Lawrence: sowed his wild oats, caught in flagrant delicto, banished, worked hard, made big strides, matured, found success, meets Selena and is charmed
* Lady Selena Bowles: loving daughter, lost her father, worries about her mother, fears for her life, strong, resilient, affinity with animals, sweet, giving, forgiving, charming, trust Gerald…and more
* Angus Connery: estate manager, tutored Gerald as he rebuilt Bellwood, Scottish, a good man
* Fleure Bowles: Selena’s loving mother, widow, protective, still young, attracted to Angus
* Dutch: a dog with heart, protective, fun addition to the story
* Azure and the other horses that will provide much to the couple in the future
* Anna: maid, under the protection of Angus, seamstress, may end up with Selena’s relative
* Being able to see the blackguard of the story twirling a mustache as Dick Dastardly once did – though this baddie was a bit more deadly and despicable
* Finding out what Grom’s backstory was after disliking him originally
* The thread with Paul and Kat and the happy landing they found
* That it was a standalone story
* The various threads coming together neatly at the end
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how difficult it was for so many in this era – wealth didn’t save women and being poor and a woman an even greater hardship
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Maybe, I liked her short story in a collection better than this sweeter one

The Uncrowned King by Donna Grant
Second in a Dragon King Duology
~ Tidy conclusion to the duology ~ Glad everything worked out for Kora and Derek…eventually ~
What I liked: * Returning the magical world of dragons and other interesting magical beings
* The tie-ins to characters remembered from previous books
* Kora: believes she is the last of her species, has lived a long time, has paranormal abilities, wants to reunite with Derek, only one who can kill the evil Star Person, learns a lot and grows in this story, suffers a great deal through the story
* Derek: a dragon shifter, has magical abilities, has memory issues that eventually are resolved, learns and grows, meets more dragon shifters that he may join with in the future
* Ash: a tomte who is invisible to most, helpful to Derek, wonder if he will be seen again
* The alliance made with the dragon kings and how it works out
* The way Three Star Persons rally forces to try and take down the evil fourth one
* The strong friendships and bonds of those in the dragon kingdom
* That it was easy to hate the villains
* That all of the main threads were tied up at the end of the story – do wonder what will happen to Villettte and Eurielle
* All of it except…
What I didn’t’ like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The Star Person who was evil to the nth degree and so deserved to die

A missing teenager. A haunted manor. A killer who isn’t done yet. Rileigh Bishop and Mitch have faced their share of dangers, but nothing could prepare them for the horrors lurking in Shagbark Manor. Sixteen-year-old Hillary Scofield warned of blood-soaked visions, floating violins, and a body surrounded in a puddle of blood. Then she disappeared without a trace. Determined to find the girl, Rileigh digs into the manor’s grim history, uncovering the chilling tale of Crawford Tillman – a man who returned home nearly a century ago to find his family murdered by an axe-wielding killer. Now, a new killer appears to be imitating the murders, starting with Hillary. With each passing hour, the danger grows closer. The Dilemma of a Dead Scholar by Patricia Rice
Gravesyde Priory Mystery #6
Slipping back into this series was a treat and a delightful way to escape into a world I would like to visit in real time.
What I liked: * Arnaud Lavigne: artist, former French comte , Survivor of the Bastille, brother to Henri, quiet, hungry, protective, bothered by tight spaces, braver than he realizes, rather taken with an heiress
* Dorothea “Thea” Reid Talbot: heiress, Davy’s older sister, protective, senses/is aware of ghosts, has “spells”, spinster…or perhaps not, rather taken with a former count
* The murder mystery and finding out who killed the scholar
* Seeing how the residents cope with two couples away on honeymoon and who steps up to take charge
* Watching budding romances bud and flourish and bear fruit
* The birth of Meera and Walker’s baby
* The engagement of Henri and Patrice with another wedding to look forward to
* The potential engagement of Paul & Mirian and Arnaud and Thea
* The ongoing treasure hunt and wondering if it will be found and if found, by whom
* All of it except…
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* How selfish and evil the murderer was
* Having to wait for the next book
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

An heiress haunted by ghosts, Dotty Dorothea knows her family believes her mad. Fearing fortune hunters who would lock her and her awkward little brother in an asylum, she flees behind the ancient walls of Wycliffe Manor. A French artist and émigré, his soul bearing scars from a French prison, Comte Arnaud Lavigne has lost everything to war. REVIEW
The Company of Owls by Polly Atkin
I am not sure what I was expecting but since my sister is an avid bird watcher and I have lived vicariously through her emails as she shares what she has seen, I thought this might be a book she would like and, I believe she would. I ended up skimming rather than settling in but did find myself more interested in the owls as I read and skimmed my way through the book.
Notes while reading:
* I wonder if short eared owls are the same as the burrowing owls cinde told me about?
* Interesting notes from authors and history about owls
* Is this a journal of sightings, feelings, information learned, or…
* Anthropomorphizing owls – I do that with animals and even shapes seen in nature
* I wonder if the owls in Lebanon are like the ones in the Lake District?
* Interesting tidbits about branching, vision/eyes, lifespan, predator vs prey, what happens when owlets outgrow their parents, history, community interaction, feathering, owl behavior…
* How Covid-19 and lockdown played a part in the writing of the book
* This would be fun to for if illustrated or there was an online link to photos of the owls
* I wonder if the photos shared online by the author are located somewhere easy to access?
Did I like this book? Eventually – it grew on me and made me think of the night sounds I hear on my hilltop…including the owls calling to one another and sometimes moving through the night.
Thank you to NetGalley and Elliott & Thompson for the ARC – this is my honest review.
