REVIEW
Dark Cargo by Ian Loome
Rogue Warrior #8
Intense, action-packed, excellent addition to the series ~ Can’t wait to find out what happens next!
What I liked:
* Bob Singleton: ex-military, ex-CIA assassin, recovering alcoholic, strong, lethal, has his own moral compass, protective, willing to do what it takes, intriguing, reminds me of a cat with nine lives
* Adam Renton: Freelance mission handler for Bob and others, former NSA, spook and signals intelligence expert, intriguing
* Abigail “Abi” Sanchez: journalist, mother, assists Bob in this story
* Jasmine Williams: Bob’s boss, worked for charitable organizations, her innocent brother in jail, Bob rescues her from thugs
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* Being able to dislike the bad guys and eagerly await them being taken down or out by Bob
* The way Bob seems to find people willing to work with and help him no matter where he is
* Eddie Stone and Andy Kennedy are still after Bob, and I am curious about why they want him to disappear permanently
* That all the threads of the story were tied up by the end of the book
* Thinking about where Bob will end up next and what issues and people he will have to deal with
* All of it except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Anderson Rowe-billionaire, Sebastian Krug who works for Rowe, Daniel Rivas and Poni Alvarez – drug trade bad guys,
* The loss of at least one innocent life
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

REVIEW
The Highlander’s Fallen Angel by Heather McCollum
The Brotherhood of Solway Moss #2
What would YOU do to save yourself from a second abusive husband, keep your daughter safe, and prevent your clan from being taken over by the brutish man who intends to claim you? Tierney has a plan that is a bit unorthodox and hopes this plan won’t fail. Excellent addition to the series!
What I Liked:
* Tierney MacNicol: daughter of a laird, mother of Maggie, widow of abusive husband, bartered by her father, survivor, strong, strategic thinker, protective, spontaneous, vowed to never marry again
* Kenan Macdonald: Laird of his clan, castle burned and in need of repair, one of four men who made an alliance in prison, strong, kind, caring, lethal, follows his heart, attracted to Tierney
* The meet-cute that ties into the Fallen Angel title
* The ease of falling back into the story
* The way the four men who made the alliance stand with one another even when things don’t go as one or more might have thought they would
* The way women were strong and assertive and often able to save the day
* Morag: considered a with and murderer by some, in tune with earth, crows, ancient religion and deities, unorthodox, able to cause a scene, admirable, a crone worthy of being emulated
* The animals that were part of the story: crows, horses, dogs, and a salamander
* Some of the supporting characters – would like to know what happens to Jacob, Maggie, Cora, Gabriel, and a few others
* Being able to dislike the villains and wish for their demise
* Being thankful that Kenan did NOT end up with Grace but now wonder who she will end up with
* All of it except…
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* That women were considered chattel to be sold off for alliances between clans – they had no rights
* Thinking about how difficult living must have been in this time period
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Yes

He may be heaven-sent...but she might be an irresistible hellion-in-disguise in this deliciously compelling Highlander romance from USA Today bestselling author Heather McCollum. Three months after escaping an English prison, Kenan Macdonald’s been taken captive. Again. Only this time, he’s been taken by a green-eyed slip of a lass. The crafty maiden snuck him a sleeping draught in hopes of convincing the Highland chief to help save her clan. This lovely creature could certainly be the devil...and oh, he is tempted. Tierney MacNicol is desperate. She’s on the verge of being forced into marriage to a vicious brute who’s determined to take over the MacNicol clan. Her only hope of escape is to find another man to marry her— and fast. But convincing the brawny, towering chief of Clan Macdonald isn’t going to be easy. And her last, most desperate plan requires a near-unthinkable approach that sends her pulse skittering: seducing Kenan. Tierney has a reputation for being rash, almost foolhardy. But with her clan on the brink of destruction, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect those she loves—and the secret she’s been hiding from Kenan. Even if it means an all-out war among the clans… Each book in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series is STANDALONE: * The Highlander’s Wild Flame * The Highlander's Fallen Angel

Hero Mine by Janie Crouch
Linear Tactical: Oak Creek #5
When the time is finally right, the stars are in alignment, the kiss was perfect, and…something goes horribly wrong…a story that drew me in, made me care, and eagerly reading to see what would happen next.
What I liked:
* Joy Davis: strong, survivor, traumatized, has PTSD, coping as best she can, has dreams, wild child with secrets, drawn to and has loved Bear for years
* Bear Bollinger: ex-Marine, mechanic, wise, caring, bright, lethal, has a secret, supportive, giving, persistent, cares deeply for Joy, wants to help her, patient
* The way Joy and Bear were able to “see” one another, communicate, and were perfect for and with one another
* The way Bear helped Joy improve her confidence and how he went about doing so
* The Oak Creek community’s strong bonds, supportive, a place I would live
* The Polar Plunge tradition and how it started
* The Eagle’s Nest where Joy and Sloane work and it’s owner

“Survival is always the most important thing.” You don’t get far in Oak Creek, Wyoming, home Linear Tactical and its gruff and rugged heroes, without hearing that motto. Still Here by Lauren Street
Still County Thriller #1
Three in the morning ~ that’s right. I stayed up till 3am to finish reading this book. I thought an hour or two of reading, close the book, and then I’d sleep earlier than usual only to become caught in the threads of this artfully woven story.
What I Liked: * Rita Jones: mid-thirties, left Wyoming fifteen years previously, left NYPD to return as sheriff, complex, competent, bright, strong, intriguing
* Cash Gabriel: Rita’s first love, mechanic, attractive, caring, someone I won’t say more about now but will say I would like to see more of
* Rita’s team:
- Mary Lou: mans the front desk, multi-tasks, worth her weight in gold, mother-figure to Rita in the past
- Walter: looks forward to retiring, slacker, curious how is part will play out
- Jason: most recent hire, bright, professional, sensitive, responsible, can see great things in his future
* Lisa: liked by everyone, hard worker, caring, heading to college, snuffed out too young – intriguing information about her emerges
* The way Rita’s past is shared in snippets here and there – her childhood was not easy and her family rather dysfunctional sounding though better than some had it
* Being able to dislike Apex and want them taken down – but not in this book
* The plot, pacing, setting and writing
* The end that made me think, “What?” and “How will Rita handle the person that just walked into her office?”
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Apex Global and everything I learned about it
* The loss of more than one innocent life and how those who took those lives considered it fine to do so
* Having to wait for the next book
Did I like this book? Yes

REVIEW
Dragon Marked by Donna Grant
Dragon Kings #9
The complex and often complicated universe created by Donna Grant includes a wide variety of paranormal beings that have their own laws, customs, and belief. I have not read all of the book from beginning to end but find myself being able to slip back in without trouble even if I have missed a book from time to time.
The dragon kings series has a large backstory that was summed up and referred to in this book well enough for a new reader to probably follow but having some background did help me when reading Katla and Merrill’s finding of one another as soul mates.
The story is an action-packed emotional thrill-ride from beginning to end that had me rooting for the couple and the dragons as they saved children, fought for their lives, were tortured, reconnected with family, and fell in love. Both Merrill and Katla feel guilty for past actions and seek redemption even though they both were manipulated by Villetta, a star person with a cruel streak. They seek to right wrongs, end evil beings, and find their way into a meaningful future.
The plot was well crafted, pace was perfect, setting perfectly described, characters easy to see and relate to, and the story excellently crafted with a twist at the end that evoked emotion. The ending indicated that Villetta plans to cause more chaos and gave me an idea of who will star in the next book of the series.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

I would sell my dragon soul to possess her… From the moment I saw her, she held me enthralled. It was more than her beauty. It was in the very way she looked at the world. The way she looked at me. She saw me as no one ever had. The scars I tried to bury, the wounds no one else knew about. She saw the worst parts of me—and she didn’t look away. Together we pursue a shared nemesis. While a terrifying foe stalks us at every turn. Whatever enemy dares to get close, I will slay. Whatever path she walks, I will be beside her. For I am hers. Utterly. Completely. She’s my greatest temptation. The other half of my soul. My mate. New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Donna Grant delivers a powerful story of redemption, danger, and passion in the next chapter of the Dragon King series.

Of Becoming by Arquie
Cozy Fantasy Short Story Collection 1-5
Creative ~ Captivating ~ Intriguing ~ Immersive ~ Thoroughly enjoyed these snippets of the lives of a variety of fantasy-paranormal characters
TRICKSY: What happens when a Gremlin steals a gemstone designated for a gift being created Noop’s best friend, Besh? Will she be able to retrieve it or not? Loved the glimpse into the lives of the Dwarrow who live in caves underground.
FLOURISH: Krim is off on the quest to achieve her goal of being a professional illusionist and has to leave home to do so. What will she find when she arrives in Trident and how will her adventure unfold?
YEARN: Melki is a success but still yearns for more. Always on guard, always wearing a mask, one night she decides to step out and go a little wild. I loved Melki and her evening out and wonder if the Captain might return.
KINDLING: Ranger Wyvi is ready for a warm meal when she is asked to assist Mup, a young boy, who has a calf gone missing in the snow. Not only does she succeed but finds a potential ranger to train in the process.
VENTURE: It is time to harvest the yullis flowers used to dye cloth, but nobody is willing to join pregnant Tils on the harvest journey. Traveling alone is not ideal, but it might be just what Tils needs.
I can see each of these short stories becoming books. The descriptions allowed me to see and experience the story, the characters were vibrant, and I found myself wanting to know more about what would happen next in the lives of those I met while reading about them in this collection.

Saved by the Alien Mercenary by Robin O’Connor
Monster Mercenary Mates #5
Mercenaries of the Varakartoom spaceship are slowly meeting and falling in love with their mates. This story sees Brace a hulking hairy Hoxiam falling in love with much smaller human Ruby.
What I liked:
* Ruby González: captain and owner of the spaceship Finix, human, survivor, pregnant with alien fetus, attracted to Brace
* Brace: cook on Varakartoom, ex-gladiator, reclusive, lethal, eight feet tall, alien species with blur fur and eyes, attracted to Ruby
* That Ruby and Brace are both strong survivors who are instantly attracted to one another
* That Brace is so protective of Ruby and accepting of her unborn fetus
* Getting to see some of the characters from previous stories
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The healing devices available in these stories
* That even though there are trials to overcome and some difficulties there is also a happy ending
* That most of the bad guys were dealt with handily – do wonder if that one that jumped out the window will show up again, though
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* That both Ruby and Brace lost their families and seemed lonely till they met one another

Alone in the Zeta quadrant, I made one reckless choice. Now I’m pregnant, trapped on a pirate ship, and my only ally is a gruff, brooding cook with a dark past. Ruby As a lone human in the Zeta quadrant, my life revolves around survival. It’s isolating, and in a moment of weakness, I give in to my deepest desire—to have a child. Now, pregnant and more vulnerable than ever, everything is twice as terrifying. When I discover smuggled drugs aboard my ship, I’m furious. When pirates arrive to steal everything of value, I’m horrified. Desperate to survive, I strike a deal with the devil—and become a ‘guest’ aboard their ship. The only solace? A gruff voice that speaks to me during my midnight snack runs to the mess hall. A soul as lonely as mine. Brace Rage is my constant companion, a force so dangerous I keep myself locked away in the galley, focusing only on making food. If I let go, I’d be on a path of vengeance, leaving nothing but death and destruction in my wake. Then she appears in the dead of night. Pregnant, hungry, and despite everything, still smiling. She’s my light in the darkness, my heart. For her, I want to be better. For her smiles, I’ll leash the fury inside me, channel it, and destroy anyone who dares to threaten her unborn child. For my Ruby, I’d do anything—even face the past I swore to bury and endure the revulsion of revealing what I truly am. This is a standalone novel and the fifth book in the Monster Mercenary Mates series. This sci-fi monster romance features a grumpy alien hermit chef, a brave pregnant human captain, and a steamy HEA.

REVIEW
Lilac Time
by Fern Michaels, Lori Foster, and Carolyn Brown
Spring is in the air and change is coming to more than one woman in the three stories found in this collection ~ Nice easy read without drama and endings for all.
SWEET AS HONEY by Fern Michaels: Who knew that honey could be a pivotal topic in a romance. Natalie and Garrett didn’t have a sweet meet-cute but did eventually work their issues out and end up with a happy ending. I found this story to be more a telling of the story than one that engaged and drew me in.
EVERYTHING SHE’D EVER WANTED by Lori Foster: This engaged me from the very beginning and kept me interested till the end. I loved Natalie’s unassuming take-charge-ness and openness along with her giving attitude and loved that she found her dream family right next door. Devlin, Mia, Uncle Sonny, and chiweenie Ruby will stay in my mind for a while.
THE MEMORY CABIN by Carolyn Brown: This story had me tingling a bit toward the end when a young girl shows up on Jenna’s porch. The story addresses friendship, family, loss, grief, support, and change that comes when one is ready to move on. Loved Jenna and Carson together and enjoyed this story.

REVIEW
Ravens Hill by Garth Pettersen
The Atheling Chronicles #5
Weaving fiction into the story of one living person can’t be easy but Pettersen has managed to do a brilliant job of making Harald Harefoot, the son of King Cnute, vibrantly alive in this series. Gifted a large property by Cnute, Harald is unsure he wants to take on this larger responsibility but is also intrigued by the possibilities it might provide. With his Frisian wife Selia beside him, he heads to Ravens Hill to scope out the landholding. Will this be a safe harbor, a place to settle forever, or be more trouble than it is worth?
What I liked: * Harald: a prince, privileged, man of his time, fair, has a temper, battle hardened, gaining wisdom over time, intriguing, loves his wife truly, and wants the best for those in his care. * Selia: Harald’s wife and partner, strong, resilient, wise, communicates openly with her husband, would love to have a family, wants to settle down and live her life in peace with Harald
* Hjalmar and his family: the law he broke made me think about the laws of the time
* Brother Widuc & Mildrythe: an unlikely couple that I quite liked and hope will fine peace and happiness
* That the difficulties of life, disparities in station, ease with which some took advantage was not glossed over
* The meticulous research of the time and being able to weave history into an engaging realistic story
* That I became immersed in the story and cared about the outcome
* The murder mystery, how it was solved, and the justice that was meted out
* That I was able to dislike the bad guys and wished for their comeuppance
* The glossary, historical notes, and bibliography
* Being glad that I did NOT live in 1030 CE
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to in the series.
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about living in 1030 CE and how difficult it must have been
* The harshness of the times, the laws that were considered “just”, and thinking about who would be willing to take on the task of meting out justice
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

REVIEW
Death Hunt by Cameron Curtis
A Breed Thriller #11
When Ellie calls asking Breed for help he is there as soon as he can be ~ A debt to be paid to a young woman he thinks of almost as a little sister
What I liked: * Breed: ex-army Delta Force sniper, requested retirement post traumatic military engagement, strong, strategic thinker, lethal, dependable, protective, intriguing, intelligent, excellent and varied skills, independent contractor, battle-scarred, survivor, attractive to women, someone I would like to have as a friend and definitely would want in my corner if in trouble
* Ellie: brilliant, sixteen-year-old, abusive father, runaway, loving older sister, capable, independent, old soul, calls Breed to assist her in finding her sister who disappeared, protected by Anya Stein
* Anya: assistant CIA Director, intelligent, experienced in field work, strategic thinker, capable, dedicated, sometimes backstop for Breed, intriguing
* Albertine: Cajun, early twenties, priestess of Obeah-voodoo-like religion, strong, uncanny abilities, supportive, attracted to Breed
* Bastien & Remy: Cajun, aligned with Albertine, quiet, deadly, helped Breed a few times
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing ~ I have always wanted to visit New Orleans
* Being able to hate the baddies and wish Karma – or Breed – will deal with them
* Learning more about Breed and wondering if the deal Albertine will help him going forward
* Thinking about Ellie and Rowan and wondering what their future might hold in store for them
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how amoral, evil, cruel, and heartless the bad guys were
* Having to wait for the next book

Evil has a heartbeat. And it echoes in the bayou. Breed gets an email from Ellie, a teenager he befriended in the past. The message is simple – she’s in New Orleans and needs help. She’s not lying. Within minutes of meeting Ellie, Breed is fighting off thugs who are trying to kill her. The reason? Ellie has evidence that her sister, Rowan, has been kidnapped from a children’s shelter. And it gets worse. Two kids have already been taken from the shelter – both murdered within days of their disappearance in what appear to be Voodoo sacrifices. As Breed and Ellie race to save Rowan, they find themselves outgunned by a small army of heavily armed gangsters, part of a sinister conspiracy that reaches from the shelter into the corrupt halls of a local hospital. Following a lead, Breed travels deep into the bayou, where he battles murderous Cajun poachers and finds himself drawn to a beautiful Voodoo princess. Good or evil, she holds the key to the murders…and Breed’s past. In the stunning climax, Breed and Ellie arrive at a dark plantation house where they face an evil beyond anything Breed has ever encountered. Death Hunt —Book Eleven in the stunning Breed action thriller series. Perfect for fans of Jason Kasper, Jack Carr, and Lee Child.

REVIEW
King of Jokers by Vyk Peters
King Series #3 (Novella)
Friends to lovers but always in love with one another ~ Short, sweet, sizzling novella
What I liked: * Winter: insurance phone-help-line person, aspiring romance author, small town resident, adopted when young, sister, daughter, bullied, has anxiety, liked order, best friends with Jack
* Jack: professional football (soccer) player, made a mistake that impacted more than himself, on summer break, good friend and teammate, best friends with Winter
* That Winter and Jack have always been friends, supported, and understood one another.
* Thinking about timing and how sometimes one has to wait for the “right” time for everything to come together in relationships that are meant to be more than friendship
* The glimpse of the camaraderie and friendship of Jacks’ team
* The way Winter asks Jack for assistance in writing “scenes” for her romance, his reaction, and what it led to.
* That Jack never pushed Winter beyond what she was comfortable with
* The moment when Winter realized what she really wanted
* That Jack and Winter seem to be soul mates and that they finally managed to find their moment in time to move forward toward a happily ever after together
* That this is a standalone story
What I didn’t like: * What I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the bullying that Winter must have endured, her anxiety, and need for rules

Rogue Frontier by Jason Kasper
Shadow Strike #9 ~ A David Rivers Thriller
Action-packed rollercoaster ride from beginning to end ~ Riveting read.
What I Liked:
* The beginning of the book with David there as his wife gave birth to their son, Jackson ~ how hard it must be to leave family behind and go to war ~ even if you enjoy and are good at it
* The original Longwing team: five intrepid, highly skilled, lethal, dedicated, admirable, and intriguing men that worked together seamlessly * The bond between the team members, the synchronicity of their actions, the use of their skillsets and their uncanny way of reading one another as well as the situation
* The inclusion of the second Longwing team with five men that mirror the jobs of the first team but are also quite different – worked well together and perhaps they will show up again in future books
* The Op-Cent moments and getting a glimpse of their jobs and how they support the team
* The action scenes that made me feel I was a member of the team and in the midst of war
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The twists and turns with so much on the line and the need to succeed
* Wondering how many of the team members will retire when their current contract expires
* That all of the team returned safely
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about what motivates terrorists and why they commit to the goals they have
* Thinking about how difficult it would be to switch between “home” and “war” and the impact it must have

REVIEW
The Duke Disaster by Kathleen Ayers
The League of Extraordinary Widows #1
Delightful way to spend the day ~ Immersed myself in the romance of Celia & Oliver
What I liked: * Celia: widow, raised in the country, treated like a burden by men in her life, eager to “live” after a disastrous marriage, bright, quirky, chaotic, heart of gold, perfect for and with Oliver
* Oliver: Duke of Hartwood, family patriarch, upright, stalwart, a bit of OCD, needs order, feared, raised by a horrible mother, grows a lot, perfect for and with Celia…eventually
* Edwards: more than Oliver’s butler, a good person, honest, trustworthy, friend
* Minerva and Eleanor: two widows that are friends of Celia’s and will have books of their own
* That Celia was not cowed by her past or the people that tried to “control” her – loved her spirit
* Hearing the backstories of both main characters – even though both had rough times
* That both Oliver and Celia did have some love early in their lives
* The slow burn romance between two people who are opposites
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* That the meddling Barnes cousins, Abernathy, Helen, and Kensworth all found out that Oliver was not malleable and felt repercussions from their actions
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* The Barnes cousins need to have impeccable reputations
* The emotional pain and mental abuse that both main characters suffered at one point or another

A fussy prig of a duke meets his match in a notorious widow. The Duke of Hartwood is a precise, exacting man. As head of the prestigious and well-respected Barnes family, he demands perfection. A Barnes must be above reproach and never mentioned in the gossip columns. When a distant cousin’s widow decides to scandalize London by courting disaster and tainting the Barnes name, Hartwood is summoned by his family. Do something, anything, about Mrs. Celia Barnes. After a terrible, lonely marriage, Celia has found her independence as a widow. Vowing never to wed again, she embraces the social whirl and outlandish behavior. Thumbing her nose at the priggish Barnes family is vastly pleasurable...until the Duke of Hartwood unexpectedly barges into her bedroom, demanding Celia cease embarrassing his family. He doesn’t care if she beds every man in London, just be discreet about it. Celia has never responded well to authority and Hartwood is no exception even if she finds him attractive. They agree on only one thing… Mutual dislike. But one angry kiss and a far too pleasurable carriage ride later, dislike has turned into something else…an unexpected passion, so strong it threatens to ruin them both.
