@sergeantnarwhalwrites got me for this one, I've never done this before so I just copied their rules.

rules: pretty self explanatory. include physical descriptions or pics, and propaganda. the “other” label can be used for “sexuality misalignment” (ie: oc is femme and you’re gay, vice versa or you aren’t into smashing but have a specific thing you wanna do with them like perhaps hug or study them under a microscope idc)

I'm going to do this for Alyss because I finally found the perfect faceclaim for her! Its Morgana from Merlin BBC (played by the lovely Katie McGrath) because she radiates rage and beauty and also more-than-slight unhingement.

Physical attributes: Dark brown/Black hair, pale blue eyes, fair skin, 5'9", Mid-20s, Thin frame, Strong and a trained infantry soldier.

Personality: Before the war, Alyss was known for being occasionally withdrawn, enjoying art, reading, as well as seaside walks and cycling. She could be flirtatious and had a keen sense of humor with friends. When angry she preferred to walk away from conflict rather than engage. After she is discharged from the service, she is frequently agoraphobic, sarcastic and often harsh to others, jaded, quick to anger, and more than happy to back up her anger with fists. She suffers from periods of complete detachment from the world around her, and experiences flashbacks. Despite that, she is fiercely loyal and protective of anyone needing aid, and has a strong moral compass.

Other/Misc: As a former initiate to the church, she is well educated despite growing up working class; a mage with a preference for fire magic; bisexual; bilingual (Ritanian/Latin) with ability to read in Demotic; out of your league.

pt. 1

So. I started reading The Rangers Apprentice last night, and I only got up to chapter six i think (Will's just arrived at Halt's cottage for his first day of training and Halt remarks that at least he's on time and already had breakfast). And. I'm in love. Im buying the first three books today.

Anyways, assorted thoughts.

I really like the dynamic all of the wards have with each other. Like yeah these are kids who grew up together and love and get on each other's nerves in equal measure.

Will and Alyss being the only two who don't remember their parents is both heartbreaking and makes perfect sense in a weird way? I don't really know how to explain it but it just fits.

It also makes them confiding in each other about what craft their aiming for that much more impactful.

But it's also infinitely funnier to me that Alyss didn't look up. They've known each other their entire lives, literally, and she didn't. Look. Up. Comedy gold.

I just about cried at Will's reasoning for battleschool.

For whatever reason, Martin reminds me of a rat. I want to hit him with a frying pan. He's delightful.

I loved all the Craftmasters. Yeah their personalities and descriptions aren't groundbreaking or anything but they still seem neat.

Chubb's wooden ladle.

Jenny and Chubb's entire interaction. Him hitting her on the head. so great.

Will being able to feel Halt's eyes on him is so good. Like yeah! He's a natural! (I hope he falls on a face a few times while training but I love the detail that he was chosen because of his potential, not because he'll be perfect out the gait, and I like that his potential as a ranger is in obvious to him.

Will's pranks and mischief is so good. I love that detail. And the bunnies oh my gosh. I was laughing with Lady Pauline.

The second that paper was mentioned in knew what Will was going to do.

I did however think that the paper would be blank.

Will just causally doing. All of That. to get up the tower. Holy shit. Horrifying. scaling the wall especially.

I hope someone told the guard on duty what was happening right above his head i think his reaction would be funny.

My heart stopped when Halt grabbed Wills hand. Like I could tell it was coming there was no way he wasn't getting caught but i was still startled for some reason.

I hope nobody told the guards outside Baron Arald's office anything about what happened that night. Let them be confused.

Baron Arald is the funniest character so far and nobody laughs. "This time, use the stairs." Hilarious! that was so funny. poor guy is taken way to seriously i love him.

I really like the pacing so far. just something ive noticed. I takes it's time and lingers on certain scenes where other books would jump ahead. I like it.

I think ive forgotten how much i love this part of a story. it's the beginning. Ive just met the characters. I've got no idea what happens next. The plot hasn't really kicked off. The big bad is just in the distance. It's nice. It's relaxing. I love it.

Alice, who always seemed to look upon her memories with happiness and joy (because she loved life, even if she didn’t understand life, she loved Oswald, Oz, Levi, and Alyss).

Oz—whose feelings rereaders now know as dread because his memories of Sablier were of pain and anguish as a chain forced to slaughter everyone.

THE ZOOM. A first time reader would’ve been like, “Oh, it’s a zoom on past!Alice which is why Oz is affected” BUT NO!!! Rereaders know!!! He’s affected because he sees himself!!! Mochijun you genius, you you you! Mochijun was giggling to herself, I’m sure of it! It’s not a zoom on Alice, it’s a zoom on Oz-Plushie!!!

Also this!!! It’s supposed to make the reader think Oz is receiving Jack’s feelings, about Jack’s ‘remorse’ of not wanting to kill his best friend, but NO!!! IT’S OZ’S FEELINGS!!! It’s Oz! It’s always been Oz! Mochijun I love you so much, I love the seeds you plant that make us all feel like idiots upon rereading.

There is a post about ableism in the sorcerer/siege of Macindaw books. I'm not going to reply directly to the poster because I don't necessarily think they're wrong, but there's a bigger problem I want to touch on without derailing their post.

The post by @bronze-oakleaf Sorry, but John Flannagan isn't an ableist for describing disabled people as disfigured, Will is. John, although in his usual hit-and-miss style, goes out of his way to show us that the people Will and others are afraid of are not monsters. It's been a while since I read these books, but I can remember there being a few backstories and instances in which it's made clear that Malcolm’s people are just very normal people who have fun, interests and hobbies and love each other deeply.

Will's apprehension of disabled people is very clearly presented as a character flaw. John is a children's author and cannot go into depth about how monstrosity isn't physical but something that manifests in the soul a la Victor Hugo's Hunchback of the Notre Dame. Still, I don't think any child (at least I didn't) finished reading Sorcerer and Siege thinking that disabled people were any less deserving of respect and love than others and Will kinda had a point there in the beginning.

I think the only example of bigotry where there is a high chance of it reflecting John's real-life views is the way he characterises Romani and Sinti in that horrible short story. Without going into depth the key difference here is that not a single person in the story thinks that Alyss and Will are doing or thinking anything wrong. Nuance, even if it wasn't much, visible in Sorcerer and Siege is missing.

Now I have that out of the way, this post is actually about character flaws. I'm not trying to be smug by pulling the historical accuracy card, but honestly, Will's views of disabled people are one of the few ways John established the world of Ranger's Apprentice as a Medieval society. I don't know how to say this without sounding kind of like an asshole, but if you want to critique Ranger's Apprentice flaws you also have to apply the same critique to the characters within Ranger's Apprentice. Separating art from the artists in this case doesn't really work because the art exists within the context the artist created. I don't think we have to be overly critical of characters because otherwise we're bad people and not woke, but viewing your favourite characters as flawed makes them inherently more interesting. I think viewing Will as an enforcer of feudal oppression (cop), extremely privileged (has an education and can bear arms) and classist with a very obvious disdain for those who are below him (this man should be nicer to farmers who can't read) is way more interesting than a perfect boy who fell victim his author's bigoted world view. Will, and all Rangers tbh, think they're better than other people. Rangers are smart they aren't like the uneducated masses who think wizards are real and the devil will claim your soul if you sleep lying down. But are they really?

Will is confronted with the fact he is like everyone else. He's also afraid of the “dreadful caricatures of normal people”, but why? The treatment of disabled people in Medieval society was very complex, and without getting into the nitty gritty, most of the cultural feelings towards them weren't because they were 'just ugly' but relied heavily on superstition. Will might be educated, but he still grew up in a society where disabled people were viewed as cursed, their ailment a deserving divine punishment. Him not being confronted with his hypocrisy in these books is the true moral failing of John to be honest.

Now to my final statement: pleasepleaselpleasepleaseplae let the Ranger's Apprentice characters be bad people. Because they ARE. I guess this post was a very elaborate way of saying Will isn't an UWU soft boy but a grown man with hairy balls. So are Halt, Gilan, Horace, Crowley (I didn't forget the time you enslaved a man king) and Duncan (Truly truly sick a twisted individual for sitting back and doing nothing as his daughter was sold into slavery because 'We need everyone here'. That wasn't a convenient plot point so Halt could save the day but misogyny). This doesn't mean Will isn't/can't be trans (because he is) or Cralt isn't canon (it is) for the sake of historical accuracy. I just want to say that these characters are all very privileged and classist individuals with many flaws thanks to the society they were raised in, which makes them more interesting. Remember be gay AND do crime.

muse a that owns a pretty little flower shop and across the street is hardcore tattoo shop where muse b works at and muse b is utterly in love at the sight they see across the street where muse a tend for their flowers every morning and fate decides to screw up muse b and the two finally meet one day Muse A is a kindergarten teacher very loved by their students. They had realized there’s a kid in her class who always forget to bring materials and is usually lonely and sad. To know what’s going on, they meet the kid’s parents, only to realize the kid is being raised by Muse B, the kid’s single uncle/aunt after their brother and sister in law passed away in a car accident. They don’t know how to raise a kid or what to do to make things better, so Muse A volunteers to give them some tips and make sure the kid will move on and be the once happy kid they know the kid can be. Muse A teaches Muse B simple things and visits them often, feeling their heart melt whenever they see Muse B acting in a fatherly/motherly way, and doing their best effort to be the best parent they could be, even when sometimes they feel about to give up.

Muse A goes to the countryside on summer vacation with her family as a small child. They don’t like it there very much, and are extremely grumpy about it. Then they meet Muse B, who’s been living there all their life in a house next door to the vacation home. The two become inseparable friends— running barefoot through tall grass, playing pranks on everyone, picking wild strawberries, building a hidden hideout so they can hang out there.      Then Muse A is taken away back to the city, and the two are devastated, pining for each other’s company for months after the separation. Years pass and they forget that summer. They’re now grownups, and Muse A is a successful business owner in the city, while Muse B takes up an artistic job ( musician, painter, poet, etc. ) near his home.      So one day, a bad breakup leaves Muse A heartbroken, and when their work goes downhill, they decide they need a break and go to the countryside. In the same rental vacation home from all those years ago, they spend their days trying to chill. Bad memories and nightmares wake them up from sleep and they take a walk through the grounds around them when they hear music//see someone?? They follow everything to their old hideout, where Muse B, too, has been spending a restless night in need of inspiration.      Muse A watches them for a while in secret, but then something scares them or they trip on something, and the two just go Whoa, hello..?! and Muse Boffers their hand to Muse A…. and then realizes that birthmark//scar on their hand looks familiar??  Muse A has been to various clubs around where they live, always gambling in the world of one night stands and fake love. One day, Muse A goes to party at a new place further away from where they live. They meet Muse B who has a dangerous aura around them, Muse A feels their arm slink around them as they dance together. The night involves shots, continuous drinking and flirting. Muse A & B end up having a night together but Muse A never expected Muse B to shoot somebody in front of her the next morning.

 gimme a plot where muse a is this cute shy little thing and one day they’re going to ride the bus home but it’s super full and only two seats are left, one next to some woman on her phone and one next to muse b who is really tough looking and has a ton of tattoos and basically scares the shit out of muse a so they go do sit with the woman and ask if that seat is taken and the woman goes off on them, and is just being really rude and muse b over hears and notices how cute muse a is blushing and has this really really strong urge to protect them and so they step in and tell the woman to calm the f down and offer muse a the seat next to them, and then they start talking and it’s great.(bonus points for next day on the bus all the seats are taken and muse b gets up and says they’ll sand and muse a is like fuck no i can’t let you do that and they get into a fight about it until muse b pulls muse a into their lap and says ‘compromise’)

 how about the complete fuckboy who is so used to routine. he picks up who he wants, it’ll be easy and if he’s lucky they’ll put up a challenge but they end up in the alley or in the men’s room and he always has the courtesy of kissing them goodbye and never seeing them again. and it’s like every saturday, he’s at the bar and he spots a pretty girl and she looks the perfect amount of innocent (he’s not up for a challenge tonight)  but theres a bit of banter going and eventually she ends up in the backseat of his Jeep and when they’re done he’s leans in with a grin, memorized almost like a catchphrase, “thanks for the great sex babe” to kiss her goodbye but she turns her cheek at the last minute, offers him a sweet smile “cute. that was great sex for you?” and just like that the fuck boy’s been fucked and she’s smoothing her skirt down and disappearing out of the backseat and he needs to find her again, needs to prove her wrong and it’s almost obsessive the way he needs her and suddenly hes just like one of the many girls that chase after him following a mediocre one night stand. 

 i really want a plot where this totally sweet girl is dating this total ass and he prob cheats on her all the time and is so shitty to her but she stays because she’s sweet and caring and he’s all she’s ever known and they used to be so in love but anyways he’s totally one of those guys who brings around his douche friends and they sit on the couch and talk about chicks and drugs and partying and she is supposed 2 be the regular house wife gf who brings them food and sits next to him when they watch movies so he can flaunt her and just be /: a dick /: ANYWAYS his fellow douche friend starts to slowly be like god this guy is so awful to her and he starts following her out of the room instead of staying to high five his friend for cheating on her w some club girl and idk he just generally starts hanging out with her more while her bf and his other friends hang out in the basement or some shit and they’ll like sit on the porch while he smokes and they just talk or he’ll help her make food or ANYTHING and it can go so many cute ways tbh like ? he could be listening to the friend brag about sleeping around one day or see him being shitty to her like yelling at her for nothing ro smth and just be like DAMN I’VE HAD ENOUGH and finally break and yell at his friend and fight for her and accidently admit that he thinks she’s totally amazing and he’d cherish her sm or he could kiss her one night while they’re talking and they could start sneaking around behind the friends back or anything so !

cliche plot where muse b( who’s a badass and lowkey kind of a jerk ) makes a bet with his friends that he can take muse a’s ( who’s a sweet lil angel ) virginity but then plot twist !!somehow sweet lil muse a worms her way into his cold heart and would you look at that ?? he’s fallen in love with her !! and so now he’s really set on losing this bet because he doesn’t want to hurt her but oops, he took her to a party and his friend accidentally let her in on their little bet. cue the angst and fluff

Muse a is a really powerful criminal. he basically has the world under their thumb. he’s killed lots of people (or at least ordered a lot of people to be killed) and he’s made a LOT of money this way. muse b, meanwhile, is a relatively ordinary person – she’s the girl next door. through a turn of events, the two meet and begin a fling. (muse a may or may not have a spouse at home, but that’s neither here nor there.) muse b knows muse a is a criminal – everyone does – but she enjoys the rush and the excitement. one day, though, muse b finds out she’s pregnant. and she realizes that muse a is not a suitable father for her baby. he’s too dangerous. death and destruction follows him everywhere he goes, and, as much as she cares about him, she knows he’s not exactly a good person. so she gives it to him straight: she’s going to end their relationship, move, and raise their child alone, and muse a is going to stay away. muse a truly loves muse b, so he agrees to her terms, and does her one better: he’ll send money to help raise the kid, and even pay for her new home. fast forward some years. muse b is settled into her new life with her child, and muse a has stuck to his promises. at least until one day, he shows up on her doorstep. he has several armed guards, and a car ready to go. “grab our kid and get in the car,” he says. “someone found out, and my enemies are after the two of you"

11.) Muse A, was a shy and sweet girl, who's never had any romantic relations. Muse B, was what you'd call a player, and a bit rude too. One night, Muse A caught Muse B's interest. So he talks to her. After talking for what seemed like hours, Muse B risks it and leans in to kiss Muse A. Muse A, being in complete shock, though confesses that it was her first kiss. Muse B completely doubting it, but after a bit of discussion he apologies hesitantly. Muse A, makes a deal with Muse B though.. She has to get to know him better. Annoyed, Muse B agrees and they exchange numbers. The next day, they meet at the park and start talking. Later in time, they start to have feelings for each other, but, Muse B always denies it. Can Muse A get Muse B's change in heart?

Muse a has a abusive father and a dead mother. Their father is almost always drunk when they get home and will do whatever he wants to muse a. Muse b is muse A's best friend- and has been for a while. They almost always hang out at muse b's house so they wouldn't find out about muse A's father. One day muse b insists on going to muse A's house. The second they walk in their greeted by muse A's drunk father. Muse b finds out the truth about their family and becomes very protective of muse a. They don't ever want to leave their side. Eventually through good times and bad a romance starts to bloom

Muse A and Muse B are neighbors who have never met. When a winter storm knocks out the power to their building, Muse A, terrified of the dark, lets out a bloodcurdling scream. Next thing they know, Muse B is banging on the door to make sure they're okay

Chapter Eleven

Lady Pauline never had children of her own, and for the majority of her life, she was happy with that choice. She loved her career and her independence, and though she enjoyed the interactions she has had with her friend’s children, she found she preferred them in small, limited doses. But then a ten year old Alyss came into her office with pigtails tied with blue ribbons and a seemingly endless supply of questions and somewhere along the way their bond grew beyond that of a mentor and an apprentice.

So suddenly, Pauline had a daughter, or at least, something akin to one. And that was more than enough for her. But now, as she watched that brilliant young woman gently dab at the blood trailing out of Will’s crooked nose, Pauline was realizing that she might be gaining a son in the same roundabout way she welcomed Alyss into her life. Because there was no other word for the fierce protection she felt for the boy other than maternal.

“Will,” she said it softly but he still jerked back, causing the tea she had poured him to splash over the rim of the cup leaving several small spots on his pants. “Can you tell me what happened?”

Without raising his eyes to meet her he muttered, “I’m fine.” He had said it so much Pauline wondered if he actually knew what it meant or if it was just what he said when he had no other words. Or when he thought no one cared enough to listen to the truth.

“I’m glad you’re okay, but can you tell me what happened?” She pushed.

“It was a bad day. I shouldn’t have tried to leave.” Will leaned away from Alyss’ caring hands. Carefully, he set the teacup down on the side table and hugged his arms across his chest.

“You shouldn’t go back tonight. You can either stay here or we can go to Halt’s. He has a spare room.” Pauline pictured her old friend’s reaction to Will’s bloodied face and for the briefest moment, she nearly pitied Will’s father. But then she looked into Will’s wide, scared eyes, and the crusty blood stains that ran down his worn shirt, and all sympathetic inclinations were washed away.

Will shook his head fiercely. “I’ve gotta go back. He’s already been alone for too long after an episode.”

Alyss placed her hand atop Will’s and rubbed her thumb along it. “Will, you aren’t safe there.”

“It is what it is, Alyss. It’s fine. I’m fine.”

“Your dad broke your nose Will! It’s not fine! You can’t just go back and let him keep doing this to you!” Alyss leapt to her feet in frustration. This was the closest Pauline had ever seen Alyss come to losing her temper. Not that Pauline could blame her apprentice. Alyss, despite being an orphan, had grown up relatively sheltered. Her lack of parents had blinded her to the fact that parents aren’t always the fairytale the ward children imagined them to be.

“This is the way my life has always been. No sense in getting all up in arms. Especially now that I’m training with Halt. I can actually hold my own now.” If the situation wasn’t what it was, Pauline would be impressed by Will’s demeanor. He was calm and reasonable, not matching Alyss’ emotional energy. In this case though, Pauline wished he would. She wished he’d get mad at his father. Mad enough that he wouldn’t go back to him.

Alyss huffed in exasperation. “Will-”

“My father is sick, Alyss. It’s not his fault.” Will stood and brushed past the women. “I’d ask you both to not mention this to Halt, but it’s not my place to make such requests.” He pulled the door shut behind him, but did not let it slam, another example of just how in control of his emotions he was. Pauline wondered if that was just his natural behavior, or if that was a lesson he learned the hard way.

Alyss blinked several times at the closed door before spinning to Pauline. “Are we just going to let him go back there? Who knows what his father will do next?”

“Alyss dear, we can’t stop him from going home. As terrible as this all seems to us, he’s never known any different. We can’t expect him to pick up and walk away from his entire life. That’s not fair of us to ask.”

Deflating, Alyss collapsed into an armchair. “He said his dad was sick, what did he mean by that?”

Lady Pauline sat in the chair beside her. “I asked around a bit after the Choosing Day. His father fought in the war, and while he was away fighting, his wife was murdered. That, combined with the brutalities of the war,” She paused, trying to think of a way to explain something she barely understood herself, “it, damaged his mind. The way it works. It can make him very angry or scared, and sometimes it just shuts down entirely. Everything just goes dark, as if someone blew out the candles.”

“I don’t understand. Plenty of men fought in the war and they didn’t come home and torment their sons.”

“War affects everyone differently. No one knows why. What I do know is that everyone who knew Will’s father before the war said he was the kindest, most loving man they had ever met. He loved his wife and treated her well. And that all he ever wanted was a child.”

“How can that be true Lady Pauline? How can that be true and yet he became a monster? It doesn’t make sense!” Alyss’ eyes filled with tears and Pauline moved to kneel in front of her.

Clasping her hands she said, “I know it doesn’t my dear. And I wish I had the answers, but this is just one of those things that goes beyond human understanding. What I do know, is that regardless of his past or his reasons, Daniel Blackwood should not be allowed to continue to hurt his son. And I promise you Alyss, I am not going to stand by and watch it happen.”

Rhaenyra and her children were her only company lately, Aegon was busy drinking all day, Helaena was obsessed with a new bug in her collection and didn't leave her chambers, Aemond is always studying, and Daren isn't even on landing! King !.

"Why does mother have to go? I don't want Nyra to leave.

Alicent braided her daughter's hair while he comforted her.

The news of the death of laena velaryon, and the fire where harwin strong nearly died came at the same time.

alys never got the chance to meet laena, but hearing that the poor woman died because she couldn't bring her baby into her world made him want to die with her.

She couldn't stop thinking about how horrible her death was, having to ask your dragon to burn you because the son you expected so much will never come out of you.

poor vhagar, alys vowed never to do such a thing to her dragon, abraxas.

Dressed in a dress similar to her mother's, she was standing next to her father, she knew that even having her next to her he would never pay attention to her.

At the end of the ceremony, she decided to look for rhaenyra.

"Nyra! I'm sorry for your loss and that of your uncle." The sisters hugged each other.

"Thank you, sweet child." Rhaenyra eyed the dress her half-sister was wearing with disgust.

"Could you help me look for Luke? I can't find him." Alys nodded and went looking for her nephew.

It was getting dark and she still hadn't found Luke, when she got to the beach she could see a figure dressed completely in black, with short silver hair, her uncle, her daemon.

"Uncle! I should go back to the castle, it's almost night." The man turned to see her and smiled.

"Alysanne, right?" the redhead nodded.

Daemon shifted his gaze to the young woman's chest, a star necklace at her neckline.

"Do you want to walk with me, niece?"

Alysanne wanted to refuse, she had to go back to the castle but the look that her uncle gave her made her accept.

Alys didn't know when, how, or why, but she had her uncle on top of her, inside of her.

listening to how her uncle moaned her name, alys had never heard a man moan, she thought that wonderful noise was a gift from the gods.

Daemon kissed her with such passion, he caressed her hair lovingly.

"I'll take you away, I'll make you my wife and you'll have my children." Her words moved her but at the same time scared her.

What would her mother think? She has just lost her maiden to her father's brother, a man who has two daughters close to her age.

when they were getting dressed a gentleman came looking for them.

Alys ran in looking for her younger brother with daemon trailing behind her.

“Aemond!” Alys knelt down to her level, “who did this to you?

Her screams were unleashed once more, Alys felt someone grab her tightly by her wrist.

"Where were you? Your brother lost an eye and you weren't here!" Alicent's voice was heard throughout the room, causing everyone to look at the princess and then at the rogue prince.

I couldn't sleep so I went for a walk on the beach.

Apparently Rhaenyra had given the same excuse when she entered with Sir Harwin Strong.

When Alicent lunged at Rhaenyra with a dagger in her hand, Daemon saw the perfect opportunity and took Alys by the hand, they ran off.

Running away from everything, from everyone.

This is legit one of my favorite scenes in the series (this whole book was made for the Whorace girlies I swear. Wait wdym Will and Alyss profess they’re love to each other?) I had so much fun making this!!

OKAY so rangers apprentice is this book series set in medieval europe-adjacent, like it has countries clearly inspired by european regions and the names are usually related to the real world name, so that combined with the locations is not hard to figure out which countries are which

the main character is this 15 year old kid named Will who grows up throughout the series (11 books), and he’s the ranger’s apprentice in question. the Rangers are this ultra-secret group of spy archers who work for the king and a lot of ppl think they’re dark wizards but they’re actually just good at camouflage, so Will is apprenticed to one of the rangers and he ends up saving the country a couple times.

there’s not much of an overarching plot through the whole series but there are smaller arcs that go through a couple books, like books 1-4 are mostly together and then 5-6 could have been one long book, book 7 is a weird outlier that takes place between 4 and 5, and so on.

what’s interesting about the setting tho is that there’s not explicitly magic systems/users, but it’s heavily implied that there’s more to the world than meets the eye (i think there’s demons in a spin-off series? idk haven’t read that one yet) it’s sooooo fun

and the characters are super engaging too!!! there’s Will, the protagnist; Halt, his mentor; Horace, his best friend; Alyss the love interest; and lots more side characters that are interesting too and even tho i described them as how they relate to Will, they all get super interesting development and backstory. this got so long i’m sorry but rangers apprentice is one of the best book series i’ve ever read and i highly recommend it :33

Finally archers getting the attention and spotlight they deserve! (can you tell I’m partial??)

It’s really interesting (in a good way) that there’s a “lack” of over-arching plot. a lot of longer “media” i’ve “consumed” (at least lately) has suffered from a sort of burn-out where the stakes feel wonky and over done, yet underwhelming after going on for so long; it’s often affected other stuff like continuity and character development and consistency (hello supernatural, how goes the Winchester self sacrifice reset?). I’m actually really excited to see how smaller chunks over longer time will feel after so long.

I also love the idea of a magic system not being explicitly stated wether it’s it a star wars-y “long time ago in a galaxy far far away” type thing were it’s implied that you’re reading an in universe recollection where you’re already supposed to “know” or it’s a narrative tool for the author to frame perspective/plot twists etc

I’m gonna go now and start looking for epubs and shit even though my kindles broke :,( (fuck you ryaniar) and i’m looking for a new one

Another characters-in-a-grey-void-and-game-screenshots post! I played the InZOI demo and loooooved it, I seriously hope the full game releases. I made my oldest OCs, Alyss and Trey, and it was so fun. I wanted to make more characters but the demo was timed and now I can't play it anymore :sob:

I was surprised by how much I liked the male options in the demo. Usually men are an afterthought in dress-up-y games but I seriously loved the fashion and options available. I LOVE this Trey design, I love his twiggy little legs. I did not catch his likeness in the first sketches I did, so I'll need to practice that.

It's interesting when you think Lacie is the Christ/Messiah of the story because she can magically reappears and fixes everything, the main conflicts started with her anyway!!!

1. Chains and Abyss problems? "Honey, I live in this place, I know this shit!"

2. Pandora? "My biggest hoe made this organization just for me"

3. Parental problem? "Well I'm a Mother and I'm willing to try! I can help Alice and Alyss too"

4. Jack? "Yeah I'm here so I'm sure he won't be a problem much"

5. Oswald? "Sup bro, the bitch is bad in the games"

She literally can fix everything in this story, ma'am is a rather cynical person but she's rather kind, caring and gentle. Also if that happens, yay, Alice and Alyss got a Mommy now!

What I love about Lacie is that she's both a Christ figure and a Devil figure. It's so interesting when a character is both...

She loves the world unconditionally and she willingly goes to her death. Yet, she's cruel, bloodthirsty, and tempts Jack into ruin...

She's something human and supernatural at the same time. She helps create life out of pure love alone. She haunts the narrative, driving characters far beyond her death.

Characters both kill and show mercy in her name. They reflect her boundless love and cruelty.

Her role as a Child of Ill Omen is to suffer at the hands of man, yet have a unique connection to the Core of the Abyss, the god of this world. She's simultaneously below and above mankind.

Her being the catalyst for so many positive and negative things is really interesting...

pt.3 BOOK 2!!!!

Halt is a Dad. He is such a Dad. I loved him in this book. Sending Will away on a "safe" mission (honey, you've got a big storm coming) so he can relax even in a time of war and regain trust in himself is so sweet.

He was so like, idk loving? when talking to Gilan about this mission. The vibe to me was just "I'm proud of you and trust you, you have nothing to worry about. I've seen what you've become and know you can do this"

All three of them ribbing on each other when Gilan first arrives, they're so comfy with each other!

Also recommending Horace in part because he's Will's friend and he wants to let these kids just, be kids together? I have cavities.

And THEN. They've gone on the mission. His two boys are out of the house, off on a journey and he's stuck in Araluen. And he's coping. He's coping in a very healthy and normal manner.

He's coping by throwing people into moats. Hilarious.

Arald, Rhodney and Lady Pauline put their heads together, figure out that it's empty nest syndrome, and decide to shove a happy child who needs a little bit of reassurance in his general direction: Alyss.

They think this will solve him chucking people into moats.

She tells him to do it again. Beautiful, this is so fun. Half the time they're on this mini journey Halt's thinking about Will. It's great.

I have a lot of feelings for this family can you tell?

The romance is clunky. That's like my big negative for this book. Alyss declaring when she was young that she was going to marry Will? Very cute. Her telling his dad that? Why? that's my only complaint with it why would she tell him that?

Also everyone being hung up on Pauline and Halt maybe being a thing in the past? It wasn't really confirmed, heavily implied maybe, and I think that two people who are dedicated to their jobs drifting apart and ending a relationship, then years later getting back together as they've both grown and missed the other person in that way and coming out of it stronger is a super sweet story. It'd be adorable. But it's like, thrown in there by other characters? and it's out of place almost? especially since their country just entered war?

I had a similar problem with the kiss in book one. Objectively? very sweet, i didn't mind it. But their was a lack of build up that made it a bit shoehorned in? It was a lot more obvious in this book though.

Thankfully, we don't spend all that much time on the romance subplots because those were not working at this moment.

I was very surprised when the war kicked off immediately. I was expecting it to build for at least a few books, and it to take like six to get sorted or something, but no. We're just in it now.

It didn't feel too sudden though. It felt very much like this was something Morgarath had set up over that past fifteen years, and the events of the story only started because He was finally ready, not because our heroes were ready to confront him.

I like that. He wasn't dragged out as the ultimate evil of the world, nobody can stop him except these young upstarts. He's a warlord, and he's acting like it. He didn't have much of a character, just a menacing presence for our protagonists to shiver at, but he did serve the story well.

pt 4 incoming super fast, that one will focus on the goings on in Celtica, and then pt 5 should be focusing more on the end of the book. I had a lot more to gush about in book 2 then i thought.
