I have had one (1) Meriadoc Brandybuck on my brain since finishing the lotr trilogy weeks ago.

Merry, who was always watching after his fellow hobbits and who embodied the comfort of home for soldiers who were jaded and scared to death as they rode across the country to a near-hopeless battle

Merry, who was told time and again to stay back, go home, leave the horrors of war to the big people, but who stubbornly went forth into danger not because he felt up to the challenge or believed he was cornered into the choice, but because he knew he couldn’t live with himself if he let his friends go to their deaths or glories without him

Merry, who stabbed the witch king of Angmar to save Eowyn even as he was near-paralyzed with fear and despair

Merry, who came back to the Shire and took the lead in the removal of Saruman’s men but still listened to Frodo’s counsel and was never unnecessarily cruel or violent, only protective of his people

His character arc is just so good and I don’t understand how anyone could read these books and not love him to absolute pieces.

thinking about kevin begging riko and tetsuji to let him take a history class and then agreeing to do all of riko's assignments, whatever it took, because he loves it that much that he was willing to go to those lengths to still pursue that passion. then thinking about all his history books, him watching documentaries and memorising a million interesting facts that he rarely gets to share with anyone. or what if the post cards he sent jean were scribbled with little tidbits of historical info about the places he'd been?? what's his favourite historical time period?? how far back does his interest go??? what's his favourite historical civilisation? who is his favourite historical figure?? what historical landmarks does he wish to see?? why history to begin with??? it's just so endearing i wish we knew more about his passion for it because yes exy is his legacy by birth right but also there's so much more to him than just that

idk if it's just me but i really have a soft spot for sabigiyuu

like, don't get me wrong, i love sanegiyuu just as much but, I just can't stop picturing sabito as softer towards giyuu.

I MEAN we know how he never shuts the fuck up about being manly, and he showed canon signs of being rough towards tanjirou in training him; and also how he treated giyuu with that iconic slap but it's also important to remember that both instances are for those two to be better. It's for their good. for tanjirou to learn how to fight better; and for giyuu to cherish his life more

i'm saying all of these more so because of the things that trabspired in the final selection, namely;

1. how he caught giyuu when he was about to collapse

2. like how someone pointed it out, even if we can't visibly see it because of his mask, sabito most certainly checked giyuu for other injuries

3. he entrusted giyuu to murata

I mean one could say I'm delusional and some other people would've done the same but i just feel like sabito is softer towards people he loves and cherishes; and only gets rough when needed be i.e. for them to learn and for them to wake up from whatever hell they are stuck in

I can picture sabito being harsh, rough and straightforward

but i can also see him cuddling, hugging, and being protective of giyuu (or anyone important to him)

i thought of them whenever i can today

he's so insecure and covers it up with so much confidence (some of which is genuine but a lot of it is coping for sure imo) and just ugh I love how he lied to Optimus so easily here

like this is like the number one guy that would fuel Rodimus' insecurities y'know? a prime who's always been praised for how good of a leader he is and how wise he is versus how Rodimus is constantly put on blast and scrutinized so ofc when he asks him how the matrix felt he'd panic and lie thinking that it must have felt great for Optimus since he's such a good prime and he can't make himself look as inadequate as he feels right in front of the guy

idk I just genuinely love it so much about his character and it really adds to the idea of how primacy is always seen as an ideal but it shouldn't be like both OP and Roddy are deeply fucked up characters (which I love very much) and they both put on a brave face in their own way

and then ofc the speech he gives at the end of Lost Light really ties it all together for me here bc yeah you don't need to perfect bc good enough is still enough y'know? idk if I'm making sense here but like idk I just really love Roddy as a character and I think a lot of his flaws are just super interesting to dissect there's just so much going on under the hood (hehe) and when he gave that speech I hope he was listening to his own words too
