apologizing in advance bc i am going full feral all over this-- but ugh yes my favourite way to view their dynamic + the nuance and miscommunication behind their falling out! i think that in some sense, alastor made vox feel ashamed of having to upgrade just so he could survive/keep up with him, whereas vox's push toward modernization led alastor to believe that vox had become a shallow husk of his former self that was leaving him behind in the process. by the time vox proposed a partnership, well-- in alastor's eyes, that wasn't the same vox anymore. vox isn't the faceless radio host that instills fear in everyone by voice alone. his whole gimmick is being seen, and if the people don't like what they see, then he's lost his power. to alastor, who's never had to change a single thing about himself to maintain his grip, the thought of doing so is unfathomable. he LIKES what he sees in vox; how could he possibly "better himself"? logically, the conclusion alastor comes to is that any attempt to change will automatically fail and instead cheapen his character. the pursuit of power aside, vox's head (maybe even more) is a goddamn nightmare to deal with. it breaks down, it's clunky, it's a whole ass target for opponents to bash in during a fight; of course he'd want a head that rests easier on his shoulders, one that allows him to move better and hold up over longer periods of time. just as alastor doesn't understand vox's need to upgrade, vox doesn't understand why alastor won't evolve with him. i think vox's problem was being too pushy, getting lost in wanting to bring alastor along for the ride instead of considering and respecting his choice to stay the same. tldr: like op said, they both projected those feelings onto their respective technologies, alastor believing new tech was the poison that had drained any semblance of realness from his friend, and vox believing alastor was too attached to the success he had with old tech to move on. the way i like to conceptualize it is that alastor is very much of the why fix what isn't broken? mindset. everything's worked out just fine for him, so why would he need to alter the formula? while vox, if he breaks (LITERALLY) it would make little sense to fix it. it would be much more practical for him to do a complete overhaul, to get a whole new head/system/screen than to waste time and energy trying to repair something that's already proven it can't hold up. i think the same concept can be applied to how they viewed their past relationship as well :] but i digress

Alastor never hated new technology he hates the way that Vox has become someone he can barely even recognize in the pursuit of modernity and. Vox never hated old technology but he’s literally made of it so upgrading himself to be newer, faster, lighter, and more powerful improves his quality of life and he hates how Alastor won’t understand that. And because they are both assholes who can’t communicate healthily to save their lives, they insist on hating each other’s “thing” purely on principle in a way that will only harm themselves. confirming the Ethiopian wolf pollination hypothesis seems so straightforward in theory, like just erecting anti-wolf barriers around some of the hot poker plants and seeing if those get pollinated at the same rate as the other ones, but also I feel like it could be some lab’s 6 year long project that ends up in Nature and answers more questions about wolf dessert time than I could ever think to ask. and also it would give more beautiful photos of wolves between 3 seconds and 1 hour into passionate nectar indulgence. so hopefully with the media attention they’re getting they can do that
