#I have many favourite dragons...

Hi and happy STS!! What inspired you to make a dragon 'field guide' and what are your favorite dragons to work on? And do you have a favorite/least favorite dragon depiction in mainstream media?

I was inspired to make a dragon field guide because that was the sort of book I loved to read growing up: Dugald Steer's Dragonology, Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastic World Around You by Holly Black and Tony di'Terlizzi, Dracopedia by William O'Connor - I loved illustrations and fantasy and a 'scientific take' on dragons.

The only problem is, as I grew older I became fussier and more knowledgeable, I would start to nitpick my favourite books relentlessly. Then I turned my attention to being creative instead - instead of going "harrumph, this isn't scientifically accurate" I could just draw my own dragons the way I liked them. And eventually I read so much mythology and studied so many crocodiles that my crocodile-dragons-based-on-folklore project is now about 40 illustrations in with 69 planned dragon species! It's still a long way to go to get finished but I am trying to push out 1 illustration a week! :)

Favourite dragon depiction in mainstream media:

I'm not sure if this counts as a 'dragon depiction' as they aren't necessarily 'depicting dragons' but like. Ikran from the Avatar films are such cool designs and I adore them.

I also really like Godzilla, my faves being Monsterverse Godzilla and Shin Godzilla (DEFINITELY dragons, dragon king of the sea...)

Least favourite dragon depiction in mainstream media:

I am HUGELY not a fan of the Night Fury from the HTTYD movies. Snub-nosed, weirdly retracting teeth, weird spiny lobed things on the head. Also I am biased because I really enjoyed the HTTYD books as a child and this looks nothing like Book Toothless. I'm just not a fan of this dragon!

Idk if this is a hot take but why is it always “Kai slaved away and worked his ass off to raise his sister” and never the other way round or them working hard together?

Like, I know he’s older but in the show, does he really… act older? Like if you think about Kai and Nya’s dynamic yknow? Because from my understanding:

When Kai and Nya are introduced we see Kai fail at making a sword and Nya being the one to chide him for it. Kai makes an overconfident statement about wanting to be a better blacksmith than his father. This suggests that one, Kai is rather rash as well as inexperienced (something that lines up with the rest of his character arc in the pots and also generally), with Nya being the more mature figure in contrast

Also just a note but in the shorts: “I can handle it!” “No you can’t, stupid”

Kai frequently being very good at neglecting people or things: leaving Lloyd at an arcade whilst being focused on finding samurai x, not even knowing samurai x was Nya or that she only did it because she felt left out by him, completely abandoning both Nya and Lloyd in s3 (and Ik he was going through it at the time, but in line with the fandom’s characterisation of him)

Kai in season 5: “After I lost my dad, I lost my way. But I was lucky to have my sister watch over me”

Generally, their dynamic isn’t one where Kai really provides for Nya at all. In fact, judging by the fact that Nya can make entire mechs and Kai struggled to make a sword, Nya was probably busting her ass to provide for Kai. And judging by the s5 quote, that’s probably true. I’m not saying Nya raised Kai, it just rubs me the wrong way when she’s treated like a decorative flourish to a narrative that paints Kai as a burnt out child who was forced to grow up too soon especially since that is such a mischaracterisation of him in the first place.

It’s quite annoying to me how they treated Wallace in the Master’s Eight too. He is a champion, or at least champion level and is literally only used to flaunt how strong Ash is now. Most of the battle happens off screen!

Right??? Like I know a lot of peeps in this fandom just forgets that Wallace was ever a Champion and Steven will always be the default Hoenn Champion but like💀 it's stated again and again Wallace is a Champion, he's a strong trainer, even Steven in the manga thinks he couldn't live up to Wallace's legacy as Hoenn's Champion, if anything he's more deserving to be in the M8 than Alain

And god the fucking off screen battles I fucking hated how they handled Diantha's battle with Leon like the episode was just abt a kid who lost her pkmn and when Cyn and Ash got back Dia's on her last Mon like that's so shit man if they wanna make Leon strong let people see why he's strong, let people see him strategize too, let people see him struggle against another fucking Champion that got to the semi finals against him, cause honest to god the way they handled that fight looks like they gave Leon gameshark cheats💀

for context dragon age has been. well. my longest and most consistently intense special interest. if i had to choose the one piece of media on this earth i love most it’s dragon age. origins was the first game i ever played and it’s the reason i play video games now at all. so if i am a little excited at the moment bear with me

Went over my most popular dragons again, it's been almost two years.. Frost is still overwhelmingly more popular than the others, though that might be because he's the only one that has been picked in a dragon share spotlight..

That Which Lurks has suddenly jumped from having less than 5 to having 11 likes, he got front page at one point. Same with Azure..

Enigma somehow jumped all the way up to 10 likes inbetween when I made him.. a year ago...? Up till now and Gale got some likes from being a frontpage dragon.

The rest have stayed pretty much the same as before.

favourite characters… hm… uh I don’t have a lot of these unless it’s genshin and then I have too many. but let’s give this a shot
