Author's note: loosely based off Suki Waterhouse's Moves. It was also supposed to be SMUT, but apparently that wasn't meant to be.

Summary: Y/n has had feelings for Andrew for a while now, and she's pretty sure he feels the same. Can one night change everything?

Warnings: unrequited love, but also, more requited than not.

She likes him – maybe its a little more than like, at this point. She adores the colour of his eyes, the way they’re green when its bright out, but then when they meet at dimly lit pubs or he hangs around late at night and neither of them bothers to turn on an overhead light, they’re this dark, hazel hue. She is thrilled by his laugh – not the polite courtesy chuckle he spares when someone tells a joke that isn’t even funny – she means that full bodied sound that erupts from his throat when they’re watching that one episode of that one show, the way he rocks backwards a little and rests his hand over his chest. And there’s something about the way he says her name too, that makes Y/n giddy inside, especially when she picks up his call late at night, while he’s on tour and the rest of the band is asleep but he can’t seem to keep his eyes shut without her voice being the last thing he hears before doing it.

Andrew told her that once;

"I don't think I could sleep if I tried....I need to talk to you first. Hear your voice so I can just...."

"Just what?"

He paused, hesitating, "nothing, I just like the way you sound. That's all."

Y/n could have sworn that it would have been the call that changed everything. She'd held her breath until around two am, when he finally yawned and said he was going to try to get some sleep.

He must feel the same, Y/n determined shortly after that. Because friends don’t sling their long arms around your shoulders, or kiss your forehead right after pulling you against them.

Friends don’t have moments where their lips get so close to the other’s that it won’t expend any real effort to make them to touch.

Andrew was the one to pull away that night and apologize profusely before blaming it on the liquor. She’s never told him, but she wishes he hadn’t. She thinks about it so painfully often that she swears the memory is burning a hole into her heart – the ache of what could've been, but isn’t.

Y/n is thinking about it tonight. They’re sitting on Andrew's back porch, a bottle of wine shared between them. The backyard is illuminated by the light over the wide, glass door that separates his kitchen from the deck, and the blue hued, inground lights that give the pool that sits between his house and the foliage bordering the woods a glacial glow. Off in the distance, she can hear crickets and the occasional rustle of some other, nocturnal creature moving through the trees.

The mood would be entirely romantic if it weren’t for the smell of barbeque and booze clinging to the thick, humid air. It's why they’re outside; its unusually warm and sticky for an Irish October, but Andrew has informed her its becoming typical for this time of the year. He also said that being outside helps, but Y/n thinks that was just an excuse for them to sit outside in hopes that the fresh air would sober them up.

But she doesn’t particularly mind – even if she’s been bitten by a couple mosquitoes.

Everyone else is long gone, and he'd asked her to stay back for a few more drinks while she helped him cram leftovers into his fridge. Its not unusual for her to be the only one left at his place – or vise versa – so Y/n is used to being alone in Andrew’s presence. In fact, she thinks she prefers when its just the pair of them, occupying a quiet space saying nothing but whatever pops into their somewhat inebriated minds;

“I read this poem that made me think of you.”

“I bought you a jacket, but I forgot to pack it.”

“Have you read that book I told you about?”

“Would you read this thing I wrote?” He asks after a couple hours of them going around in circles of menial chatter. Of late, everything Andrew writes is about her, and while he’s thought of telling her that more times than he can count, he can't seem to force the words out of his mouth. It isn’t even that he’s intimidated by her – that would be far too uncomplicated for an overthinker of his caliber. No.

He could never be intimidated by Y/n anyway; he’s known her for too long, too well. She’s the person that puts him most at ease; his heart doesn’t quicken when she touches his arm the way she’s touching it now as she says, “Of course, I’d love to.” In fact, the tick in his chest slows when she does that, he isn't nervous or worried or anything, he's just…. happy. And though her hands are usually so cold, Andrew swears there’s a tingle permeating the thin fabric of his grey Henley when she touches him.

Their eyes meet as Y/n promises to read what he’s written and she finds herself drawing in a shallow breath. There’s something else on the barest top of her liquor-stained tongue, but its refusing to break past her lips;

“I’ll read anything you write. I’d do anything for you, really.”

“Great, great,” Andrew beams suddenly, straightening his back before standing with purpose. “I’m gonna get it, wait here.” He doesn’t wait for Y/n to respond, not even with a nod, before disappearing into the house.

While he’s gone, Y/n tops off those sleek, stemless wine glasses with the remainder of the chilled Sauvignon Blanc and takes a sip of hers, hoping it’ll help combat the sticky heat that’s surrounding the property. She knows she probably shouldn't have anymore; her head is already fuzzy and there’s that tell tale film over her eyes. The one that makes lights stretch out like shooting stars and makes you feel like you're walking through a dream. Andrew must not be any better either, because he stumbled over all too familiar steps on his way back into the house.

“Got it,” he announces as he returns to the patio, raising the notebook over the head in triumph. Andrew is less than graceful when he retires next to her again, dropping the book into her lap. After a lengthy sip of his wine, he leans back onto his elbows. “It's the last thing in there,” his cheeks heat up, the dusty red colour creeping up his cheeks, towards his ears.

He’s a funny sort of drunk; chatty and able to make a joke of literally anything. He’s flirty too, yet somehow retaining his usual reserve. When they venture to pubs, he’ll flirt his way right into a one night stand without even realizing it, and then slink back to her side, rattling off an excuse involving the words, “ehm, well, she isn’t really my type.”

“Yeah? What is your type?” She’d ask, eyes challenging him.

He’ll look at her for a bit longer than usual, squirting his eyes a little as his waning smile fades completely. “Doesn’t matter,” he’ll eventually say dismissively, covering his words with a swing of his drink before changing the topic.

“Its not finished yet,” he mumbles as Y/n finds the page.

“It looks finished,” Y/n frowns, looking down at the way he’s signed the bottom of the page, the way he usually does after scrawling out the final words.

Andrew shakes his head, “ehm, I mean….the idea. I’m not done with the idea.”

“Oh.” They lapse into easy silence when she starts reading, meticulously scanning every line, barely restraining herself from ghosting her thumb over his hurried, untidy penmanship. Y/n can feel Andrew’s eyes on her as she reads. He's still laid back and propped on one elbow as he steadily sips his wine while she tries to get her hazy mind to comprehend everything on the page.

Its a love song or a profession – or she’s pretty fucking drunk and has lost all ability to to comprehend words.

No, its definitely a confession. A beautifully written one. Of course everything he writes is always much akin to poetry; but with this, every word is strung together like tiny bulbs in a reel of fairy lights. Each one in perfect harmony with the other. They’re carefully chosen, as if just one were missing its entire, delicate balance would be pitched into uncertainty.

“Andrew….” He sits up, draining the last of his wine as she lifts her head from the page.

“Is it bad? The worst fuckin’ thing I’ve ever written?” He chuckles sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck as he flashes her a lopsided smile.

“It's beautiful,” Y/n rasps, suddenly feeling like the air’s been knocked from her chest, or like she’s been running too fast. There’s something besides the night’s oppressive heat surrounding them, something fragile and precious. Part of her wants to say something else, she can see on his face that he’s aching for more, but Y/n is absolutely terrified that if she does, it’ll be the wrong thing and the moment will be shattered into a million little pieces, scattered across the forests behind his house by an unexpected breeze, the way it happened on a night all too similar to this one.

“But?” Andrew is the one that dares to speak, the word uttered softly and with the weight of reproach clinging to its single syllable.

God, what if he’s ruined everything? What if the reason he’s never been able to tell Y/n the way he feels is because a morsel deep within him knows she doesn’t return his feelings. Andrew doesn’t even know if she’s interested in a relationship – or anything adjacent – right now, she doesn’t talk about going on dates and or fancying anyone.

What if the reason she never talks about other men is because she’s somehow gathered how he feels and is trying to protect him from the hurt? That would be awfully cruel, but he supposes it's the kindest thing she can do without ruining their friendship.

“But….” Right before her, in a matter of seconds, a dozen emotions cross Andrew's face and Y/n realizes that, if she’d been in front of a mirror the night he told her he likes hearing her voice before he goes to sleep, this is what she might have seen reflected in it. That cautious hope, with a bit of fear sprinkled in.

Upon realizing that there's no ‘perfect’ thing to say, Y/n hastily leans forward and rests her lips on his, in a chaste, close-mouthed kiss. He’s shocked at first, she can feel it in the way he stiffens. But after another couple breaths spent like that, Andrew wraps an arm around her, flattening his palm on the center of her back. As he relaxes, Y/n deepens the kiss, deserting the book in her lap to cup his face. His beard tickles the inside of her hands, just like she’s always imagined it would, and his tongue and lips are sweet with the wine’s fruity notes.

When they break, faces only inches apart, Andrew lets out a shaking breath while Y/n holds onto hers. “God….I don’t think I would’ve ever done that,” he admits, shoulders rising and falling with deep, heavy breaths.

Sometimes he wishes he had her courage, but most times, he’s glad its hers.

A hint of a smile tugs at her kiss-swollen lips. “I know,” she laughs softly, the sound airy and musical.

Her eyes are twinkling, like two stars plucked from right over the vast bed of darkness hung over their heads. Andrew is certain that no two stars have ever shone brighter, so its fitting that they belong to her – the most dazzling person he knows. Setting his glass down, he lifts his free hand to her cheek, rough pad of his thumb tracing her lips. “I’ve been thinking about it for a damn long time,” he admits. It's hard for him to put a definite number to it, it might as well have been very soon after they met.

“Me too,” Y/n rests her hand over his wrist, offering it an affectionate squeeze.

“I think…..” he trails off, struggling to keep a firm grip on his thoughts. His imagination is running a little wild right now; his mind is already churning out thoughts of his future as it changes shape. It's funny to him how one thing can change everything else.

One kiss, and he swears he’s seeing the rest of his life. Holding it.

“Sshh, we don’t have to talk about it tonight,” Y/n whispers. Talking complicates – they’ve been talking for too damn long anyway, and knowing Andrew, his brain is already three weeks ahead of him. Its sweet actually, because every plan she’s made for her future has been built around him, and now suddenly, he’s doing the same thing. “Lets just….”

“Just what?”

“Do this,” in an instant, Y/n closes the space between them again and seals her lips over Andrew’s. That time, he responds immediately, pulling her against him until the only thing left for her to do is slide her leg over his thighs and shuffle into his lap, pressing her chest to his and draping one arm over his shoulder while she keeps her other against his cheek. The way his beard scratches the area around her mouth makes her smile, and she thinks its something she'll get used to quickly.

All of it is so close to being as commonplace his arm slung around her shoulders and the sound of his voice coming through her phone while there’s a timezone and entire ocean between them. The way his mouth moves against hers, the heat of his hands as they hold onto her waist, the sound of his voice as he says;

“I’m glad you stayed.”

another interesting twitter observation I wanna talk about

people may have just uncovered a new / upcoming pokemon in Teal Mask related to the Loyal Three

story spoilers for Teal Mask ahead, also pretty long post warning

so in this image used when Carmine and Kieran’s grandpa is explaining Ogerpon’s real backstory to us, people noticed this cut off shape above Okidogi’s head.

Some people seem convinced that this is Okidogi’s hand / fist, but I personally don’t think it looks like that at all. One person suggested that this is Ogerpon without its mask on, which is hilariously wrong, hilariously stupid and makes zero sense in context.

However, a full image of this “mysterious shape” was apparently found in the games files, with all the other assets used in this sequence.

So naturally, people believe this is a new Pokemon. And while I find it reasonable to an extent to doubt this image’s validity, there is something in game to corroborate this. In the shop in Mossui Town, there’s a plush that looks exactly like this supposed Pokemon, just upside down, which is interestingly coloured the same as the Loyal Three’s toxic chains.

For those who don’t know, although the roles are reversed Ogerpon and the Loyal Three are based on the Japanese story of Momotarō, a boy who befriended a talking dog, monkey and pheasant (the Loyal Three) and worked with them to defeat a band of Oni (Ogerpon). However as you probably know if you’ve finished the Teal Mask story, the Loyal Three don’t really have a leader or Momotarō equivalent as far as we can see. However if we’re to assume this little purple thing is a real Pokemon, it’s safe to assume it’ll fill that role.

There’s even more evidence to back up this suggestion too. For one, the Loyal Three are all classified as “Retainer Pokemon” in the Pokedex. One definition of the word “retainer”- the only one that really makes sense in this sort of context- is essentially a servant or domestic worker. It’s very interesting that they’d choose to classify the Loyal Three as Retainers, rather than something more fitting to what we see of them in the game like “Ruffian Pokemon” or just the animals they’re based on or something, because this implies that they are indeed working under something or someone.

The other bit of evidence is that, like I said, the plushie of this supposed Pokemon is coloured the same as the Loyal Three’s toxic chains. Their Scarlet dex entries talk about how their bodies were changed and enhanced by these chains, implying that they were something different, probably smaller and weaker pokemon, originally. It’s possible that this pokemon was the source of these chains and the one who gave them to the Three, maybe in exchange for them becoming its “Retainers”.

So essentially, this supposed Pokemon is the Loyal Three’s “Momotarō”.

What do you guys think of this? With how much evidence there seems to be, I find it hard to believe nothing will come of this at all, although I am curious exactly how they’d introduce this thing if Kitakami’s story is all wrapped up.

9th feb '24 - [arch] characters, interactions and emotion - making a mini webcomic

Gahhhh Shri this has been an absolutely crazy couple of weeks!!!! Hope you are doing well :)) First of all, WOW! You have a lot of goals, and I’m sure you’ll get them done! I’ve worked a lot on my graphic design during the process of making Winter Wellbeing. If you wanna see a blog post dedicated just to that, I can do so! It would be cool to compare notes on the approaches we take for graphic layouts. If you wanna share your knowledge of camera skills when you build that up that would be awesome 😭😭

It’s been a tough few weeks, art wise. I have been reflecting on my process, motivations to create, the ego and all the baggage that’s lumped into the creative process for me. It turns out there’s a lot. I took some space from my illustration practise (literally for a weekend!) and began to realise how dysfunctional it is. I’ve been writing a lot about that so there may be a larger piece of writing coming about that at some point (no promises!!)

But for now, let's talk about little successes!

I’ve been playing with some characters for a while but I’d hit a bit of a block with the plot. I realised the expectation of having a finished project of high quality soon is unrealistic, and an unhealthy expectation to put on myself. I rarely give myself time to play with concepts for a long time and let the characters, plot and interactions evolve naturally. Maybe this in part came from sticking to the short university module turnaround. I noticed that that short turnaround was causing a lot of block, so I have decided to bench it as a comic for now and focus on using it as a playground - falling in love with the characters, creating stories and drawing them for fun. Maybe years down the line I’ll make them into a comic - we shall see! 

I *tried* to do hourly comics day this year and it didn’t quite work for me. I think I made 3 comics? And then got distracted with a bigger project that ended up taking a week or so to complete. Let’s have a look at it, shall we?

First of all, it’s based on an unfinished fanfiction I started a couple of months ago, which was mostly bad, but there was one nice scene that I liked and wanted to expand on. I started by having a look at the script I wrote and thumbnailing on the iPad. I’m away from home at the mo and usually would prefer to do most of my artwork traditionally, but because I don’t have access to a scanner, the whole process was digital this time. A lot of the pages got scrapped because the dialogue wasn’t necessary, and I’m not drawing pages that aren’t necessary.

I thought a lot about posing during the process, acting the scenes out in my mind and sometimes physically, really understanding the emotions of the characters, why they’re saying what they’re saying, their tone and how to convey that though their body language and expression (i find grian really annoying normally [affectionate] but I want this grian to step on me).

Pearl was hard with this because she’s quite erratic and unpredictable in this series, so I wanted her to switch from raw explodey anger to playful jabs at Grian. I’m hoping this comes across as somewhat insane, rather than tonally off and inconsistent. I did super enjoy drawing her and her explosive nature though, especially in comparison to Grian’s coldness.

I played with levels and monotone colour too - I’m not working with multiple colours much at the moment so I’m able to focus on things like values composition, characters and backgrounds. My skills limit the kind of stories I can tell currently, so I’m working to improve those foundations. Maybe when I’m back in the riso studio I can play with colours a little more.

Colours - despite the simple pallete it gets a bit nerdy here.I stuck to specific flat percentages for most of it - Pearl’s hair and Grians jumper are 60%, Grian’s hair and Pearl’s cloak are 20%. Then I added a 14% layer for shadows, using a ahrd blend eraser tool for highlights, making the images quite dark. I fill a layer with texture from Forystr’s riso brush for procreate, and turn it into a 40% opacity colour dodge layer. This gives it some much needed texture and makes the lighting feel low and nighttimecore. It also pushes the values to look really nice - I tend to be too scared to push them by myself.

I tried a few different colour layers to get a *vibe* but settled on a low percentage riso blue in a colour layer. All layers besides the riso blue are in a riso black, colour picked from a riso colour pallete. I learnt these tools - using percentages to get good values - from working with risograph. I really recommend having a look at these techniques and doing some monotone work. It's really improved by character designs, page layouts and compositions.

That's all from me today, though I have had MANY other thoughts over the past two weeks about creating, but perhaps we'll dive into them another time. Generally kind, but very blunt and honest, and occasionally experiences strong mood swings causing them to be unusually rude, offensive, or sometimes even violent. They try to be decent, but because of their unfortunate past and connections to Void Termina as well as their current state of corruption, it’s a bit difficult for them to be so.

Spent most of their life aimlessly wandering the Universe before being purified and (in their own words) rescued by Kirby. Since then, they’ve lived in Dreamland, spending almost every day either relaxing or asleep. They’re not exactly a social character, and usually stay out of civilisation, either hiding away in their house (which is actually an old shrine they repurposed and redecorated) or alone on the opposite side of Whispy Woods’ forest, where they found what they describe as a miniature paradise. They occasionally invite Kirby to visit said paradise.

They rarely ever engage in any form of battle, but on the rare occasion they do, they always rely on their literal God-tier Soul Magic. Because of their abilities, they’re believed to be a part of, the twin of, child of, or otherwise related to Ylenik, the Ykka of Soul. It is unknown whether these assumptions are even remotely true, but the possibility is always there.

It’s a good night. As good as you can get in the Barrel, anyway. Jesper would probably say that good nights are made for the Barrel, that that’s where all the fun is. Wylan doesn’t exactly disagree, not entirely, but he still isn’t as sure that the gambling halls and rowdy clubs make for as good a time as they do an overwhelming one.

It makes for an interesting cocktail. Raucous celebrations and bright colourful lights. Loud music, bodies brushing and bumping each other, squeezing together in a space packed with twice as many as was likely recommended. A venture he’s familiar with, now, though he still feels out of place. He’s never liked crowds, though he supposes he can’t say he’s had enough experience to make a proper case about it. He’s generally distrustful of crowds, and somewhat awkward, and so it’s hard to say if Wylan truly dislikes them, or dislikes himself in them.

He doesn’t have to contemplate it for long. Jesper slips into the seat beside him and hands him his drink with a wink and a smile. Wylan smiles back, doesn’t try talking over the loud music.

It’s easier now, especially with Jesper beside him. Easier to know what to do with his hands, where to look, what to say. He doesn’t always need to fill the silences with Jesper. He doesn’t always need words. The rest, well, easier to slip his hand into Jesper’s, easier to look at him, instead of anywhere else. He’s a remarkably grounding presence in the midst of the chaos he loves so much. Jesper practically glows here, eyes alight with excitement and thrill, reflected back from the pink and green and blue of the bright signs and sconces.

Kaz keeps them busy, and so they don’t get to do this often. But tonight the Barrel is in full swing. Drinking, dancing, dice and debauchery, as Jesper likes to put it. It’s a dizzying affair, and Wylan knows he likes the novelty, that he can enjoy it, for a time. He likes Jesper, whenever and wherever they are.

“Having fun?” Jesper asks, and Wylan nods. Sips his drink, because between Jesper and everything around them, it’s always hard to find words to put to feeling. He is, he’s having fun, but the words are out of reach, and he doesn’t strain to grasp them. Having fun is an effort, and it’s a taxing game he knows how to play, how to stretch for as long as he can, because it’s worth it. Wylan doesn’t reach for words, he thinks in music anyway. He’s focused on being here, too much to divert attention to talking about it. Like a generator conserving energy to keep the power going, sacrificing some things in favour of more important ones.

He’d worry about being rude, about expected responses and giving into his more base oddities, if he didn’t think Jesper is too used to it by now to be phased. Which he isn’t. He just keeps smiling, bumps their shoulders together, legs tangling under the table.

Wylan tilts his head towards the dance floor, raises his eyebrows. Jesper’s smile widens into a full grin. “Darling, I thought you’d never ask.” Jesper pulls him onto the floor, and Wylan laughs as he scrambles out of the booth and nearly drops his drink trying to put it back down on the table.

Jesper does not drop his hand once, as they make their way out, expertly weaving through the twisting walls of bodies bending together so much like the buildings of the streets outside. He leads him into the throes of it, and a bit off to the side. Not quite the centre, not quite out.

Jesper spins him by the hand he’s still holding, and Wylan laughs as he goes. They dance, and everything narrows until it’s palms pressing together and the loud base of the band. They’re not too bad, but Wylan isn’t paying much attention to them. He’s focusing on Jesper. On the warmth of his hands on the dip of Wylan’s waist and his breath against his ear when he leans in to whisper to him about all the little dramas he’s made up about the other club goers. The bartender is sweet on a girl who’s sleeping with the boss, a couple to their left are world class circus performers, on the run from their skiv of a ringmaster.

This is the game of the night, of many before it. It’s Jesper’s game tonight, as Wylan has none of his own to offer up. He nods and snickers, which encourages Jesper more than enough, it seems.

They dance until the bass becomes grating, laughing starts to strain, and the club gets progressively louder and hotter with the bodies inside it. Everyone else is too drunk to pay attention to who they stumble into, and who they stumble into seems to be, with increasing regularity, Wylan. Like a switch flipped, or a curtail closed. And Wylan wants to leave.

“This is getting boring, isn’t it?” Jesper asks, leaning in even further and wrapping an arm around him.

He knows this game too, all too well. It’s another one of Jesper’s favourites. This is getting boring, isn’t it? Always conveniently pinning it on something else, always giving Wylan an out when he needs one. He’d be put out about it, if not for the promising smirk and dark eyes that paint Jesper’s face when he looks at him. The knowing and understanding tilt of his neck, raising of his eyebrows.

Wylan nods into Jesper’s shoulder, and receives a squeeze against his side and an all too quick peck on the lips in return.

“Want to find some more fun of our own, then?”

Wylan smiles, and it’s not forced, not for Jesper. They leave the club, and make their way back home. Jesper swings their hands as they walk, filling the silence with comfortable talk the entire time. Pleasant with the lingering buzz of drinks and dancing and the promise of what’s to come. Wylan contributes where he can, but Jesper doesn’t push, doesn’t expect, doesn’t read more into silences where nothing is written.

It’s not until later that he finds his voice, though words by that point are needless things. Wylan presses his feelings and his thank-you’s into hard and heady kisses, and knows that Jesper hears them as loud as if he’d shouted.

That last anon answer has me wondering, what in your opinion is the best pellet out there?

At the present moment I don’t believe there is a best pellet. With current research we don’t even know what exact foods wild parrots we keep as pets eat. what vitamins and minerals are actually needed in what quantities for optimal health. Most of the data used to formulate diets for captive parrots is based off studies done on chickens. Pellets don’t run feeding trials and the singular one that claims they do won’t publish any data for consumers to make educated decisions.

We don’t have any of the data necessary to be able to say that there is one that checks the boxes better than another. Currently when selecting pellets the knowledge you’re using is as primal as “is this toxic” and “will this cause harm to the body over time” which is where we are able to make statements on fillers, dyes, and sugars.

I feed three different pellets currently for various reasons

TOPs - the ingredients are wholesome foods, no real fillers or additives, no synthetic vitamins (there’s no studies on whether or not a parrot can actually absorb and utilize synthetic vitamins currently, hypothetically they should and there’s nothing wrong with synthetic vitamins, we just do not have proper peer reviewed knowledge on how they interact in a parrot body) however there’s loads of concern over whether TOPs on its own supplies enough nutrients to be a full diet on its own.

Harrisons - it is formulated by a veterinarian (say about that what you will *cough* science diet debacles *cough*), does primarily use fillers but does also have slightly more hearty things like oats and barley, packed with vitamins that may be lacking in other formulations. Have flavour varieties, tougher texture, and much more varied sizes that can benefit more picky eaters. Frequently recommended by other vets, same company also creates liquid formulas for sick and ill birds. Overall does seem like they know what they’re doing.

Caitec - I primarily started feeding this because Newt is allergic to soy and this has very low soy and doesn’t yield a reaction from him. Has some filler but primarily uses oats, quinoa, millet, sunflower. Then you move in to the added vitamins and minerals. Unique crunchy texture, very palatable to my birds, very large size variety which is great for enrichment.

My choice to feed multiples is because of a safety fallback in case of recalls, I won’t be left feeding seeds trying to quickly do a pellet conversion if I have two other backups they can eat. But also to cover nutritional bases. We do not know what they need and I don’t wish to rely on one specific company to be doing everything just right to be providing optimal health for my birds, serving several will hopefully make it so if one pellet is lacking something one of the others will have it. And lastly is enrichment- various flavours, colours, textures and pellet size make meals more interesting and really liven up mealtimes.

There simply isn’t a perfect pellet because nobody knows what that would even look like.

When looking for a food to feed your bird the ultimately best thing to do is ask yourself “is this product made for the birds or to draw human interest”. Flashy colours, silly shapes, and potent sugars will primarily be used to attract your eye- not your birds. The sugars will make it palatable which converts the bird quickly and make the human happy. But the dyes and sugars are not ideal for long term health.

And secondly “how do birds do on this food” in the dog industry you would just get the paperwork from a feeding trial but for birds this means reading forums or sampling it for yourself. you can tell pretty quickly whether a food is doing your specific bird any good. Dull plumage, inconsistent droppings, weird food intake fluctuations, lack of energy, feather destructive behaviour, would all be potential signs that a food isn’t working for your bird (also potential signs of illness so y’know, correlation is not causation)

I did a deep dive last year where I contacted major pellet brands and tried to get any basic info out of them, you may want to read in to that if you want continued reading!

GW2 Commander Zine qna

SO I’ve got a lot of questions already, I will be adding to this as I get more but thought I’d answer them as there are some repeat questions! 

What if I don’t have a commander character?

That’s completely okay! As long as you’re drawing an oc FROM guild wars 2, that’s acceptable too and you’re still welcome to apply! It can be your main, your favourite oc etc! as long as they’re from gw2!

I’ve never been in a zine before, what is expected of me?

Firstly, I’m honoured you’d want to join this as your first zine! Secondly, for artists it will be a fully illustrated piece (Full shaded, full colour full body. it is up to you whether it includes just your oc or other ocs!). For writers it will be a fic of at least 3k words! It will need to have a beginning, middle and end - open ended fics are allowed! For other contributors it will be discussed with the individual

Would there be a sought-after style for artists? What would that selection process look like?

there is not a specific style - as long as its a full illustration in your style, it counts! 

For the selection process, I’m aiming to have 5 moderators at minimum and each of us will vote on each application. Creators will be judged on multiple categories:  Can they complete this piece in time? Do they have completed examples that we can work with? Which race are they looking to create for/how many of this race do we have already? For each race I would like to have an equal amount of creators for all 5 - of course this will be up to how many apply but I want it to be equal and one race not favoured above the other!

Will there be a central place for contributors to discuss, share ideas, and the like?

Estimated timeline?

at the current moment this is still to be decided! Mod applications will be opening next month, 3 weeks after will be contributor applications that will stay open for a month! Our final release date for the zine is aiming for valentine’s day

Will submissions be popularity-based like in other zines?

Absolutely not! Everyone will be given a fair chance and be judged on what they can create NOT their popularity - if you can show you can complete a piece for the zine in time for the deadline, you’re in! And for those that don’t get in, if it does well I’d love to do a volume 2 and you’d get first chance if you wanted in!

I would be worried about the commanders being skewed in favor of one or two races over the others.

As I said above, this WILL NOT happen. I will be looking to have an equal amount for each race! This will depend on how many people apply and for what race they’d like to create for but I will be aiming for a balance between all 5!

if anything is available physically, do you already have an idea how to manage production in a way that would keep shipping costs prices within acceptable range for everyone? (if production happens in the us shipping to europe is often far too expensive, that kind of thing)

In truth? No. I don’t. I will say I am from the UK so it will be shipping from the UK. However, If i don’t get a merch moderator to help me with things like this and is more experienced than I am,  it will be a digital only zine as I don’t want to make a promise that I can do this when I personally know I cannot. I have made merchandise in the past but with a project at this scale I don’t want to make a promise when I can’t guarantee it.

What are the mods level of experience with running a zine and what will be the primary method of communication between mods and participants

Currently we don’t have a mods so I can’t fully answer this for when the mods are chosen however as the host: I have been a moderator for zines in the past & been a contributor for over 5 of them as well! The primary method of communication will be through discord. Acceptance/rejection letters will be through email!

What would Jolyne and the Stone Ocean gang be like as mers?

Okay, so I HAVE watched Stone Ocean this time around!!

As per the rest of the Joestar line, Jolyne has a split caudal fin. Like Jonathan Joestar, Jolyne has a rather large sail fin, though she has an additional set of smaller sail fins on either side of the main sail - like her father, Jolyne is almost unnaturally large for a female mer. Jolyne's main colour is deep green, like Joseph, but her yellow striation is much more muted and thinner than his. Similarly, her fins are that same muted yellow, speckled with toxic looking purple and pink -- don't be fooled however, she is not toxic nor can she emit the same electric shocks that Joseph can. She has two stripes of pale skin beneath either eye, and three pale spots up on her forehead between her brows. Her shoulders and back are covered in these same pale spots, and are strangely uniform in size, position, but vary widely in her skin shade. She offers herself up to Green Dolphin Rehabilitation Center for mer-biology students to have a safe, hands on showcase of a live mer — this is where she meets the Gang.

F.F was super fucking hard to think for because they're a fucking plankton in canon - I wanted to make them a cuttfish mer, but I've settled on making them a human! They meet Jolyne through a mer rehabilitation program; Jolyne's mother is pretty close with humans, and as such, Jolyne has a pretty postive connection with them and offered herself up for an exhibition. F.F. was one of the students who came through and studied Jolyne's body, striking up a conversation when they were left alone with one another.

Ermes is a mer as well, submitted to Green Dolphin after being falsely ID’d as the mer that attacked a human vessel. She's on the bigger side - definitely bigger than your average mer, but smaller than Jolyne. Her main colour is a deep orange, and her back is a dark pink-purple, peppered with bright pink rosettes similar to leopard spots. She has a few bony spines poking up on either side of her sail, 6 in total, 3 on either side. Ermes has a 4 finned split tail, and usually uses her tail like a battering ram when in a fight. In addition to her 4 split tail and sail, she has only 6 extra fins on her body — two pelvic, two lower anal fins and two fins on her arms. She becomes friends with Jolyne when they’re both in acclimation tanks to be released back out into the ocean, both agreeing to become pod and return to visit the others every so often.

Weather Report is a slim mer — he has lived in the Green Dolphin rehabilitation center for about 4 years now. Lost a majority of his fins to his brother when they fought in the wild and was picked up by the facility to help him recover when he washed ashore, bloodied and near death and almost fully amnestic. He’s mostly recovered now, but his fins are nowhere near as fluffy and full as they used to be and will probably never be. Weather’s body is spilt dark black blue and pale white blue — his topside is the darker half and his underside is pale. At his peak, his fins used to be rather thick and fluffy, almost akin to super sized Betta Fish — now they’re thinner and more wispy, and about half their original length. Weather’s sail is still rather tall, and he holds all of his fins completely out because he likes to stretch out. His fins start dark at the base and become iridescent white at their ends, reflecting brilliant colours when viewed at the right angle. He’s still in physical therapy for his injuries, but can mostly move without pain. Weather is also the adoptive parent for Emporio, working alongside Anasui to raise the fry. This “co-parenting” led to Weather wanting to court Anasui, though he’s mildly miffed to note that she’s fixated on Jolyne.

Anasui is a ceacelia mer — I can’t decide if I want them to be a cuttlefish or an octopus so just know that they’re a ceacelia. I think she’d be overjoyed to have so many arms; more limbs to pull things apart with! She’s currently in Green Dolphin Rehab alongside Weather Report, acting as another stand-in parent for Emporio — unlike Weather, Anasui is there because he’s a genuine threat to humans. He was going to be put down until Emporio imprinted on him, so now Anasui is considered a permanent resident of Green Dolphin until further notice. His crush/fixation on Jolyne started after he watched her interact with Emporio for the first time, and her hissing at him for being hostile towards the human staff is the only reason he’s started forcing himself to be “nicer”. She is currently unaware of Weather’s affection for her.

Emporio is a young mer that was born into captivity at Green Dolphin Rehab — he has the potential to be released into the wild seeing as his adoptive parent are two wild-born mermen. Because he’s still a fry, Emporio doesn’t have a fully developed sailfin; his sail is very small and the spines are quite soft allowing the sail to collapse easily. He naturally has the instinct to swim underneath Weather or Anasui, burying himself beneath Weather’s thick fins and trying to do the same to Anasui’s limbs — young mer are naturally anxious when not riding beneath their parents fins, and some of the biologists theorize that this is why Weather has taken to swimming around with permanently flared fins. Emporio’s colours haven’t fully settled in, so he’s a strange grey-sand colour with white stripes going down his body from hip to tail — theoretically when he gets older, he might settle into a blue-grey colour but at this stage in his life, it is impossible to tell. He also gets sleepy quite easily so he’ll sometimes hitch a ride on top of Weather’s back, or beg both of them to lay with him in the nest.

Oh, it was no one in particular (Maybe a rival gang member if I were to specify…? Probably not his former creative partner Thea though. She’s not that violent haha..) (I haven’t thought of details of Thea and Edwin’s backstory in a long time now, and surface personality traits are hard to pin down without a backstory.)

The joke was that in the first scenario he was painting and in the second he was in pain because of the meme (?) that there’s “pain” in “painting” haha (I don’t believe painting/drawing has to inherently be a painful process though, or that only painful emotions make good art)

Over more than an hour later this is more ‘crow comments on almost every new pokemon, oops’. I am passionate about cool designs... I didn’t mean to come for bogleech’s throne!

 Under spoiler tag because I was lucky to play without having been spoiled on ANY of them and I want to keep that experience, total spoilers ahead.....

I was so annoyed the cute grass kitty immediatly became bipedal, but I really do dig the whole line, even the last one. The base is SO cute I LOVE kitty and being a sort of bandit and then a magician is cool. Especially enjoy how the final form is bipedal but not THAT humanoid- it’s a neutral body rather than being uncomfortably curvy or gendered. Also as I look at it: final form kinda is a lot like how I draw my eye deers in terms of “fluffy pastel body, long skinny darker legs”

I’m so sorry they did this to the duck. I’M SO SORRY. the duck was cute and then the middle is ugly and the final.... in battle usually the tail is extended and it’s obviously a ‘festivale’ thing, but it’s so unsettling. I hate how human it is, it’s dancing.... I hate this creature and for it to be a STARTER feels so unfair. who okay’d it.

I always loved dunspace as a kid playing gold silver, even tho it was useless. It was so mystifying looking and... odd. It was the pokemon that really most felt like a cryptic mystery of a being, you know? Like what the hell IS it? I’ve learned since it’s like... Tsuchinoko, maybe. But for it to FINALLY have an evolution that is almost entirely identical is really funny to me. Yep. That sure is just dunsparce. I mean. Dudunsparce. It’d have been cool for him to suddenly be a giant badass snake monster but this is better

Okay two off: TaROUNtula is adorbs and his evolution sucks. a little yarn ball spider with a kinda dopey face is really cute and then he turns into... way too dude shaped and really unappealing. He doesn’t look much like his pre-form and loses all the charm. A spider with a spindle it uses to make traps is great but why this??

Dolliv is super super cute. I love the many grass and bug pokemon that are just ‘cute girls’. I don���t like humanoid pokemon, but a lot of them are more stylised human than bordering on uncanny, and they look cute and fun. Dolliv works with her theme perfectly and is extremely cute. But man I was really REALLY happy to see Arboliva !! She’s funky and stylish in a different way. Sure, we could have another Tsureena line, where the end is basically a plant ginjinka gal, but while still hhumanoid Arboliva is way funkier. She usually is in a wreath shape too to better show off her design. I love her colour pallete too. She feels like something I’d make....

how can you not love this little face. His weird metal collar and his funky arms that he usually stows. Those eyes tho. He’s so cute and simple.

I wouldn’t normally like anything about this design. Like, it’s fine, but very very simple and  nothing screams pokemon about it. But extra shoutout: they are VERY funny. The names are both great (Maushold is one of the few times I sensibly chuckle at a pun name) and the fact they almost always evolve when you’re not looking- and their evolution is having children- is great. I was worried it was a glitch but I hope (and believe) it’s on purpose. You one day look and OH SHIT! THEY HAD CHILDREN. I thought I’d gone insane for a moment and missed it, 10/10 experience I carried this couple in my bag and they gave birth without telling me

I know birds are... hard. because they’re birds. But what is WRONg with the birds this gen? I don’t despise any of them, but they’re the most Bird Birds I’ve ever seen. The flamingo is litterally a flamingo full stop. The stork is mostly a stork, the weird flesh sack it carries creeps me out and without it it’s. Just A Stork?! Wattrel as a seabird is Fine as a first evolution, but it’s evolve really bores me. And Squawkabilly is a nice pun and most pokemon looking, but still very plain. He has four plumages and yet who will care? He also so clearly needs an evolution to lean harder on the theme.

Hehe........ crab. I love giant enemy crab. He’s very charming. Eeriely robotic. The idea of him as an ambush predator is cool, I wish in game he actually WOULD blend in and strike you!

I didn’t like the first evo at all but he’s here for context, because once I evolved him I was enamoured. Just like minecraft......... but really, a blocky, salt construct is cool. I love his colours on the evo while the middle stage looks like a sweet little dude.

His little image isn’t very clear. This rock/poison flower.... what is he? A crystal that looks like a flower but isn’t. I really don’t know what is the inspiration beyond just ‘crystal-ish flower’, but he looks both very futuristic and like some prehistoric plant! The strange little eyes and the transparent cone at the front add to the mystery.

I don’t think I LIKE Shroodle but it’s hard to hate those empty eyes. I raised one for ages because I HAD to know what he was. A crocodile of some sort was my bet. Apparently it’s a ‘mouse’ which is then more confusing when it turns into a monkey. I think on reflection he might be designed on a spray paint can... his evo is a grafiti monkey, and he has a long shiny body with a black cap, with a tuft of paintbrush like hair! but he’s def not a monkey.

Grafaiai tho is a very cool design. I hate monkeys and apes but a lemur can stay, it has a cool design and colors and I really enjoy the wide glossy eyes.

This old ass dog....... it’s not just that he has a very endearing story role but that helps. He’s nothing really too special, but he has such sweet eyes and really captures the feeling of a fking old ass dog....... like this is a dog that was MADE to lay on the living room floor for hours and grumble in his sleep!!

I hate gimmighoul!!!!!! AAA!!! No, seriously, what is up with this guy? Without the chest it looks like... a sentai...? I’ve never been a fan in gen of power rangers or super sentai designs anyways but it’s my best guess for what this bastard is. The base version vaguely also makes me think cockroach, but sadly needs to be 300% more cockroach. The chest version would be fun- pokemon has mimics but not the classic treasure chest!- except... he keeps poking his stupid head out, which doesn’t at all bring to mind a mimic! The chest form is indeed just the bastard in a box, no unique changes.

THEN THE EVOLUTION.... who the hell is this roadside used car lot advertising man and why does he make me look for so many of his stupid children to earn the right to hate him? This design is so confusing for me. What is he? Bad. His pokedex entry tells me he’s 1000 stacked coins but looks more like a bullet.

god he does resemble like a 90s ad campaign to appeal to the youth and get them to stop smoking huh. But really, for the amount of annoying effort and time it takes to get him, he is not worth it at all. Horrendous thing. Stupid thing. AAA. aaa.

Seriously, I never liked gimmeghoul but I definitely imagined a fitting final form would be way bigger on the ‘treasure’ theme. He has a chest form and you collect coins- imagine if he was a riff on a treasure hoard instead! A long serpant busting through a treasure box covered in coins, a mimic who hides as a great hoard barely poking out, a centipede with coins as armor....

Okay, I played violet, so the past pokemon I didn’t get to see. On beating the main story I decided to look finally at the full dex so I could see all the version exclusives. I quite enjoy them, and while I liked violet’s designs old pokemon exclusives/legend more the ancient pokemon are nicer than the robots.. because the robots gimmick is continously the same ‘a pokemon but robot’.

This jigglypuff is very funny to me. She’s kinda just a joke of ‘cute jigglypuff but with little fangs’ but I can’t resist her charms.

Also^ I think pokemon doesn’t know how long ONE BILLION YEARS is.

Admittedly she’s a very plain riff on misdreveous, but I’ve always liked misdreaveous and she looks neat. I like her spikes, not sure why she has one green wing arm. It’s nice the pearl necklace evolved early imao

So salamance might be my fav pokemon ever by childhood bias: Ruby was a very dear game and I raised a salamance from a bagon up to level 100! Then I kept the same salamance and transferred him between games, up to Platinum. I love that weird, fat dragon.... he’s a popular pokemon, so has had a lot of extra forms, and they all suck

Salamance is a brightly coloured (but teal and pale red not the godawful tones of his mega) fat dragon. I keep saying fat but someone has to remind Pokemon. He’s a big and solid boy, but mega evo takes away that (and his arms) and makes him this super tacky bizarre monstrocity. Now we have Roaring Moon....

What is this? The idea of a feathery funky salamance is great, I appreciate even it resembles the mega evolution since gimicks are lately just one generation then forgotten. But his body shape and colors are so odd and messy. He looks really thrown together with a few basic good ideas that are completely not working!

I have really no strong feelings on the robot pokemon, meanwhile. They... look cool enough, ish. They’re robots that look like other pokemon. The designs really don’t do anything crazy interesting though, even tho they make changes it’s nothing radical. I only put Iron Hands here because I want you to know in a lore book you can find, it’s said Iron Hands is maybe a cyborg, not a pokemon, and might have a living person in there somehow. That weirds me out.

I definitely do wish the techno future pokemon did more though! Instead of just being ‘robot very similar to other pokemon’, it feels we’re missing out on ‘more evolved’ versions of pokemon or robot-flesh mixes.  My immediate pitch for a more evolved (in IRL biology) pokemon from the future? An extremely fierce magicarp that has finally become strong! Or a bagon that has skipped needing to be salamance and has adapted wings of its own! There’s so much potential to look at odd pokemon and imagine how they might adapt over years of natural evolution. You also could do robo-flesh hybrids as said, where I have no exact ideas but something like... A combee that has adapted to work with nanorobots in a swarm? Hell, put magicarp in a mechasuit and say in the future magicarp has learned to psychically build mecha suits. Why not.

okay, she’s pretty cool tho. I def like to see gardevoir/gallade fusion one, who def makes the most bold changes to the design too (well, I guess iron treads is nothing like donaphan REALLY, but...). Haters gonna hate her nonbinary girl swag. Glad to see in the far future we’ve finally ended gender. Etc etc.

The ruinous legends are super, super cool designs. All of them are some of the TOP creature designs I’ve seen in ages tbh. I haven’t gotten in game to unlocking them or looked if they have lore (I hope there’s a lot of lore, mysterious ruinous beads sealed by ominous swords and giant doors is sick but I want more). Each is based on a cursed object that is so full of a negative emotion it has become tied to a pokemon and sealed away. GREAT STUFF.

Anyways, love this totemic beast and the big ancient cracked blood sacrifice bowl on their head. And yes, it’s totally a blood sacrifice pokemon: it’s linked to fear, as the bowl was said to have been used in ancient rituals and evoked such strong fear it became a horrible creature.

This guy minus the sword would fit in pretty well as a regular pokemon, admittedly. I find her colours really pleasing. The sword adds a bit more of that ‘legendary’ flair but does look a bit awkward impaled like that. But no, I really enjoy him.

OMG OMG OMG! AAA!!!! LOOK!!!!!

I am not a slug person (I am actually terrified of slugs irl) but. I loveeee this design. It’s clever (look at the both eyestalks and the false lead face) and extremely themeatic, with a great colour pallette. This thing screams spooky nature spirit in every way.

Though my least fav I felt I should throw in all four special legends. Plus, nothing about them is bad. I find the eyes rather awkward but they do invoke a bulged eyed goldfish. All four legends are based on cursed objects, so this feels like an okay way to add the beads to the fish... but not my fav. I do enjoy tho his patterns on his body. They’re just very stylish.

The box legends... are okay in their battle forms. I didn’t expect to really like them, but the writing is good and I really loved my robot motorcycle dragon by the end.

they’re far more appealing and charming to me in their ‘low power’ mode, which is what they are for most of the game. It’s nice to go ‘oho! badass battle time!’ but, meh. The more animal funky little guy form who loves sandwiches is better.

She’s a bit funny looking but really nice. She’s a cute little... something. I again am fine with human shaped pokemon when they’re still monsters, not people, not overly sexy people. Her middle stage is really cute to me as a sort of little knight, and then her last stage gives her adorable hair and a giant hammer. Classic design trope, but I love it! She’s cute and small but extremely strong and fun. I enjoy that her pokedex entry tells us she’s a BANDIT, not a blacksmith-knight.

The version exclusive branching knight evolve really feels like it should have been in sword shield, huh? But even tho it’s not normally the type I like... I am not immune to cool cursed knight with violet flames. he’s edgy and cool and fun, and I think perfectly balances between simplicity and very detailed-  his design doesn’t look cluttered to me at all despite how complex it is!

Hoenn Battle Frontier x The Owl House: Greta Kogomi (Bard Coven)

[text reads: ‘martial arts imbued with bard magic’, ‘guitar lick (single attack)’, ‘guitar riff (multi attack)’, and ‘’freestyle percussion’’.]

Young Greta Headcanons:

-I absolutely had to make Greta a Hexside student, purely because I can’t see her attending any other school without getting kicked out. Exhibit A: She’s constantly pushing the school uniform to the limit, by doing things like sowing colourful fabrics onto the capelet to make it into a full cape. If there’s one thing this kid loves, its fucking with authority.

-I decided to chuck Greta into the bard coven, because I can see her early forays into ‘music’ being just. Screaming a battle cry while full-body tackling an opponent. Calling that ‘bard magic’. Suffice to say, her grades were awful for a very long time, but she won most of her fights simply because people don’t expect bards to ditch their instruments and start punching.

-Her grades got better when she learnt how to imbue her fists with elemental magic instead of her staff. Aka her punches could burn/paralyse her opponents. (this is based off Breloom’s effect spore ability lmao). Coincidentally, this is roughly around when she got banned from duelling the other students.

-Her palisman is her shedinjas, who are merged when her staff is in guitar form, but split into two creatures when released. One of them (Slice, in blue) helps Greta channel her elemental electricity magic, while the other (Dice, in pink) helps with elemental fire magic. (I chose those two because I reckoned electro music and punk ‘this is straight fire yo’ music would be good choices for an edgy teen lol).

-She would occasionally put on punk shows for other detention students. And by occasionally I mean that she was immediately banned from doing it again as soon as she set the school’s roof on fire. Good work Greta.

Older Greta Headcanons:

-Of course a bard that hates authority will be joining the (noi-)BATs rebellion. Greta starts to really refine her craft, learning how to play sick magical riffs on her guitar with the goal of one day beating up the emperor. 

-She’s ok with wearing the uniform, simply because its already really shoddy and varying between members; and also because she was specifically told ‘nah you don’t have to wear it, its just for anonymity’. ...she is failing at the anonymity part due to constantly wearing really distinctive accessories, but oh well, its the thought that counts.

-She teaches the other bards martial arts, so that they’re not helpless if the emperor successfully removes their magic.

re; jamie’s shifting preferences, maintaining form, & learning control

generally speaking jamie is quite happy with himself as he is ! which is significant because if he didn't like himself while being a shapeshifter it could get him SERIOUS body dysmorphia issues. so he likes to do things as if they're accessories. in general he cares more about his general vibe so he's more likely to change smaller things. like give himself freckles on a given day or change his hair colour/texture instead of messing with larger parts of his body like gender presentation or looking like a new person entirely.

usually when he looks like a totally different person its because he feels like being anonymous or bc he wants to pull a ( harmless ) prank on someone. especially in his mainverse where he’s a relatively popular twitch streamer/tik toker which means he’s occasionally recognised in public. the only other major change that happens with any regularity is if he is feeling esp fem/like a girl. but even then its more just like a slightly altered version of himself with more feminine features bc he really does like how he looks ! ( reminder that jamie, while generally he prefers to present masc & defaults to he/him pronouns, is still genderfluid & thus his gender presentation is not a constant ).

as a side note i feel like even if he'd been afab he'd probably still have the same general vibe? maybe present masc slightly more than he'd normally present fem in his current canon but still just feels most comfortable in his natural form so to speak because it requires no effort & feels more comfortable mentally.

keeping a form ( partial or full ) is something he has to consciously decide to do, so it can be super draining to think about being a certain way all the time. the hair or freckle or eye colour change type things is something he's so used to that it doesn't require the same amount of effort. similarly with hiding zits as desired, its all more so something just in the back of his mind that he’s not actively thinking about but is still there. understandably, larger changes require more focus. the longer he keeps an altered form the more physically tired he can get as well. he's not going to suddenly start changing back without his intent to do so though since the odds of him letting it get to that point are so incredibly miniscule. he does tend to eat a lot too bc shapeshifting in general uses a lot of energy which can make it difficult for him to gain weight be it fat or muscle. this especially was a big struggle for him when he started boxing & had to put on more muscle in order to fight well enough.

jamie's adhd is actually a huge part why he's so good at being able to keep shifting in mind while doing things. that being said if he REALLY needs to focus on things like when he's doing school work, he'd 100% just go back to his base form to make it as easy as possible & just take his meds

for a bit of context, jamie’s mother comes from an extremely old & very powerful coven in korea. & hannah, like her mother, became a witch who started displaying powers around kindergarten age & then later in middle school she developed her abilities as a medium. meanwhile jamie become a shapeshifter was such a rare phenomenon that no one really could have expected things to turn out the way they had

there was only one example of a shapeshifter in their ancestry & it was so long ago that there wasn't really anyone left alive to talk about it & the records their coven kept were pretty minimal, most likely having been lost over the centuries

so while hannah had lessons to learn control over her magic, jamie had to have his own lessons about how being a shapeshifter was rare & important & he had to be careful not to overdo it or use it to harm people etc. but realistically it was more like basic etiquette on how to be a good person & then supervising him while he learned to control it himself. but that part was unfortunately something he more had to figure out on his own.

how he shifts is sort of strange too ! so how he started initially he learned how to shift isolated parts of his body ( such as suddenly giving himself long hair or giving himself lil claws on his hands ). which gave him significant control in his technique — although it took a while to master keeping said form.

then when it came to mimicking other people or animals it was far more difficult. normally shapeshifters have either a set thing they change back & forth from ( ie. human to animal to human again as a one time switch one way or another where they stay like that until making a decision to switch back ), OR they are able to copy something or someone they’ve seen.

if jamie had learned to do this first its possible he’d be able to do it far easier than he does now, but because he learned isolation first he finds it easiest to copy a form if he understands the basic anatomy. ie. he understands the make up of people because he understands his own body so well, but if he tried to turn into a bird without remembering that a bird's main limb bones are hollow, it might pose an issue if he tries to fly. as he gets older he slowly learns this form of shifting as well, being able to copy something he’s seen without understanding how their body words, but its sort of slow since there’s only so many species of animal he’d even want to TRY turning into.

frankly he’d be able to do a lot more if he put in the time, but he’s not in a position where he needs to use his abilities to fight like he’s some sort of super hero & he’s able to do all the things he currently cares about doing so he can’t be bothered to learn to do more.

How Si (and Ni) Transform Reality

Someone asked "is Si about internal body sensations” as well as other questions regarding Si/Ni. Even though I assume it is just this one anonymous user who’s asking all these questions for Si/Ni, I’ve decided to use this question to further describe Si as well as its similarities with Ni. Skip to the 3rd paragraph after this if you're more interested in that. Skip deeper below if you’re more interested in how they shape reality in relation to Se/Ne.

To first answer the question, this is not a Si thing. I assume in an attempt to differentiate Si from Se, people thought that introversion would mean sensing something inside. However, we are talking about a psychological concept. What constitutes "you" is not your body, but your mind. The subject is the self. When it's about the mind, it's about the brain. What is internal are the contents inside your brain. In introversion, stimuli travel deeper into the mind, reacting to other contents within (that can be getting mixed with those content, triggering those content, etc.). Bodily sensations are raw stimuli. Your body exists separately from your mind, making it psychologically external until the information becomes a stored experience or is transformed by the inner world.

On a related note, calling Si as past is an incomplete truth but still has value to it, just that people forget that we need to interpret "past" in terms of the mind since we're talking about psychological processes. When it comes to traditions, Si sets baselines (by baseline, think of game rules or trend lines. They're not strict rules that are always exactly followed, but they do serve as a reference point for what to expect) based on available information (e.g. what they have done, what they have seen been done, what seems to be supported by what they know). It is when we spend less time & effort to think where you’ll most gravitate towards these baselines. A big example is a habit. When done a lot, an act/thought becomes the default option; requiring little thought to be chosen. Since social traditions are norms, there will be many people who have those as their own traditions. That does not make Si about other people's past. Its baselines can be the norm or not the norm. If the stored information of Si mainly skews towards a non-normal baseline, then that's what it will likely be set to. This causes Si to be a big player in how your circumstances (e.g. social environment, financial situation, any interactions with people or objects) influence you, since those circumstances will influence your experiences and therefore your data. Your understanding of what romantic love (something everyone seems to understand well, yet isn’t something with clear & concrete lines to distinguish from other sorts of feelings & relationships) is will depend a lot on what you observe from your parents and the media you consume. If your observation consists of plenty of gifts. Then you'll largely associate with and think of romance as full of gifts. If your observation consists of plenty of disrespect, quarreling, oppositions, and instability, then your baseline understanding of love would be a bit negative, because what comes to mind is a toxic relationship. Let's say all humans see the same variety of colours, however, each color is different to each individual. Your "orange" can be someone's "purple". Person 1 and 2 are both looking at the same apple, but they see different colors. The color person 1 sees blue, while the color person 2 sees is green. But they both learn to identify & label the color as red, because that’s how they learned to call it. In simpler terms, if the color red was always taught to you as if it's the color blue, then you will probably refer to red as blue, not knowing that what you see as blue is actually red to others. If you've always observed that prison is an unsanitary, violent, depressing environment with poorly maintained appliances, then that's what comes to mind when you think of prison. Basically, Si's traditions and knowledge could fit the norm or not fit the norm, and that's because personal traditions are largely based on the user's personal experiences. 

When we are talking about a psychological past (i.e. how the past influences the mine) we are not looking at the world's past but at -their- world's past. A web of interconnected individual information becomes a database with a search bar. Information that strikes an impression to the user becomes the input for the search bar to seek related information on the input (and the results of the search are basically "what comes to mind" no matter how irrelevant they may seem to the input. This is because what information is related/mentally tied to each other is subjective.). Layers of data culminate into your personal understanding of a word/concept/symbol. It could also be a simple recollection of an experience/data point. In summary, when it comes to Si, stimuli is not absorbed raw, but through an inward lens with content shaped by previous experiences (primal knowledge is also involved with Pi, but that's a topic you should learn from Jung's writings where he discusses a lot about archetypes or the primitive mind). Si uses the database to identify & associate.

Now lets use all this to see how Si can be biased or subjective in application. When it comes to stimuli, introverts tend to have a stronger focus on particular details. Since introversion means oriented internally, this means things that strike/resonate with them (e.g. those that attack/fit with their view, those, those that spark the formation of a view). Functions oriented externally do not inherently pick one over the other, they are oriented to external conditions overall. Due to how much introverted functions rely on the inner world, they're more likely to be 'niche' rather than well-rounded (e.g. Ti is prone to be creatively stupid or very insightful when compared to Te's typical conclusions).

In many situations, we merely see the exterior of a household. Only when we open the door and enter the place can we truly know its contents. However, Ni and Si allow us to see beyond what are actually the closed doors. Or to put it more accurately, to assume what else there is. Ni does this through thematic pattern recognition while Si does this through a network of information relations/associations. Si is an online browser that analyzes the search input to bring up stored information. The top results of the algorithm may end up being integrated into their perception of the situation rather than treated as separate. Regardless, all these connections make up Si’s understanding of an object/topic. Ni is more similar to an image recognition software. The precise stimuli do not matter as much as long as the overall structure resembles the object. Different faces are still recognized as faces. They don't remember the exact image, just that it's a face.

In a way, Si transforms the actual stimuli based on their subjective experience of it (lens that are colored by inner content such as archetypes and memory). At the most basic level, stimuli means more than itself. All those pixels on the screen are meaningless until it is processed by the brain through all sorts of associations/connections from existing data. It is "identified" into something meaningful to the user (something they understand). With this, there is a lot of potential for interpreting these otherwise meaningless sights and sounds. It is as if everything is a symbol (e.g. letters individually or combined inherently mean nothing, but we learned to identify them then attribute them to particular sounds and meaning). Once stimuli are identified, Si uses associations to bring up supplementary data (what comes to mind). They identify what they see as x,y,z, then suddenly a,b, and c come out.

Like Ni, it can start filling up the gaps in information, or even replace information with things that aren't fully confirmed. An example that will help you visualize it is trying to identify structures/objects despite having blurry peripheral vision (now imagine this with flatout blindspots). This applies to many other things such as 'what comes to mind' when a certain 'keyword' or key stimuli pops up. It is likely that Si has something to do with when an experience is improved simply because the environment is improved (e.g. eating food in a non-crowded, peaceful, aesthetically-pleasing, and comfortable setting can influence how much you enjoyed the food). You can summarize Si as psychological 'experiences' that arise as a result of the stimuli (these experiences can be treated as supplementary data: data outside of what is actually being observed at the moment). You could argue the intuitive functions to be experiences as well, and I would agree. But to differentiate the two: sensation seeks to experience the world (but not necessarily the actual world since one's absorption of stimuli can be significantly faulty, especially with introverted perceiving functions and a strong lean against sensation. Si does this through the inner world, I am referring to content stored in the mind rather than thoughts in general. Consequently, this also involves dreams. Dreams are an amalgamation or "blob" of synthesized content in the mind. Those contents are within the scope of Si and Ni. All the made up information is also from Si/Ni. Not only are dreams rooted in Si/Ni content, but since processing is about abstracting meaning from things, Si/Ni are the main functions in experiencing dreams.) while intuition does not seek the world itself, but rather, its potential (Ni specifically pursues one of the potentials). This is why Ni leans more toward foreseeing (this word is more accurate than 'predicting' which can be more deliberate than what Ni actually does) the future (the future isnt something you 'experience'). 

So when Si fills gaps, it's almost like 'predicting' the present. Look at it as datapoints vs trendlines, Si sees the datapoints while Ni sees the trendline. Si can use the datapoints to make assumptions about more data, while Ni uses the trendline to see the data (the made up data of these functions can be accurate or not accurate, what matters is the process). Seems a bit similar? That's because they are. The content itself is different, but the brain tends to use them in similar ways. These are personal functions in the sense that they extract meaning that isn't a part of the stimuli, to the extent that it leads to a conclusion (a conclusion that is empirical in nature. To the mind, it is not deliberate. It is more of a sorting/matching activity, than a problem-solving activity). The objective functions, on the other hand, are objective and impartial. They're fairly disconnected since they care not for what the stimuli has to do with the self, they look externally. When compared to Si & Ni, Se & Pe are more like "observations" than "experiences". Nothing is personally meaningful (they don't extract meaning/extra info from what they see), they're just spectators. Se sees the world for itself, Ne sees all of its potential. Si tries to identify the world, and Ni resonates with a particular path; which then integrates or colors their experience of the world (almost in an illusory form….not to say that Si/Ni are always incorrect, but they are like illusions)

Now about how their reality-transformation affects their relationship with the Ne & Se functions:

Inferior Ne dislikes uncertainty while Inferior Se dislikes change/chaos. Si and Ni deal with these dislikes effectively:

Ne has difficulty filtering their possibilities to what's most realistic or fitting given what they know. This is done by connecting information to related information collected from other contexts. Ne extends to possibilities, then Si connects each possibility to data of past and present. Both data and possibilities come out upon seeing a situation. Si brings up data to assess each possibility. Every suspect is investigated not directly, but with existing records. The world is full of uncertainty, but information can make things a bit more certain.

Se has difficulty filtering their waves of stimuli  into the one's most useful for predictive/confirmatory purposes. Can't distinguish outliers, nor can it recognize any to be particularly significant. Ni-Se cares for the context but not for the entirety of it as Ni dilutes the situation into broth. It doesn't try to look at info from other contexts, there's an in-context focus, but it is very reductionist. Ni seeks to understand the context (Se) by recognizing particular broths (broths apply to various contexts). It forms a narrative over what is inherently a chaotic world.

The Sims 5 Leak Reveals the Game’s Map

Several photos of the map that will be featured in Maxis' upcoming The Sims 5, also known as Project Rene, make their way online.

In a Reddit post, user DzXAnt22 showed off what they claimed were leaks of The Sims 5's unfinished map. The shared images of a town and its roads were supposedly datamined from a playtest build of The Sims 5 that was leaked recently. DzXAnt22 claimed that the images were from an early build of Project Rene that was meant to be a tech demo for the upcoming title's building functionality. The areas featured in the leak only represent a small part of a much bigger map that was likely based on Paris, as the layouts of the locations match those of France's historic capital city, DzXAnt22 explained.

The Reddit user also speculated that The Sims 5 could be an open-world game since the playtest build ran well on a smartphone even with the title fully zoomed out. Additionally, there were no UI elements for a travel mechanic, nor were there any string references for traveling to other locations, according to DzXAnt22. The Sims 4 did not have an open world, but its predecessor, The Sims 3, did.

Project Rene is the latest title being released by Maxis. This map was datamined from myself through the Project Rene Playtest build that was leaked a few weeks ago.

The area coloured in red on the map indicates the playable area in the playtest. Here are some comparisons between the map and some in game screenshots which shows the map lines up correctly. The map is also based on Paris I believe as i have also found actual IRL photo references in the game files as well (I will share if there’s a demand for it but they’re not really that interesting)

Based on the build I’ve got there isn’t a whole lot to go off of, however I can tell you a few pointers that leads us to believe it COULD be open world:

Project Rene utilizes asset streaming and LODs to keep everything running smoothly. Seriously, this thing runs at ~30fps on my galaxy s9. This tells us at the very least performance is rock solid even when fully zoomed out.

There is no “travel” UI icon anywhere in the game files (or anything like it).

No string references found for “travelling” to other lots or locations.

Do keep in mind that this build is over a year old and things could have changed from then and now, however we strongly believe this will be an open world game much like TS3 was.

With the way The Sims 5 beta is structured right now, the OP strongly believes that the game could eventually be a full Open World game just like The Sims 3. Still, it’s fair to say that the playtest still doesn’t represent the potential full game that Project Rene could end up being. After all, we were told that The Sims 4 was going to have Toddlers at launch in 2014 and we ended up waiting 3 years for them to get patched into the game.

Realistic Object Physics

How Maxis is taking a realistic route for object placement and customization.

The game will allow you to add accent decor and functional objects to already existing ones that you’ve placed down. Let’s say that you want to make your bed a little more comfortable with few extra pillows. You’ll be able to simulate real world physics by placing the pillows above the bed (or wherever you please) and watch them fall down. Becoming a realistic part of the object’s body structure.

After clicking the objects gravity feature, the extra objects placed down will naturally fall to the closest surface area. If the surface is stabile enough to support the object’s weight then it’ll remain there. However, pushing an object next to the side will cause it to fall down.

This gives opportunity for not only realistic decoration in The Sims 5, but also possible gameplay effects that the realistic physics engine could provide.

Item Stretch and Pull

Intuitive creative tools seem to only get better with Project Rene. With certain customizable items having options to be stretched, pulled and expanded to your heart’s desire.

What if that cute dining table that you wanted to use for your large household just isn’t big enough? With just one drag you’re able to extend and manipulate the table’s look. With the game’s engine smartly extending added objects to their according place.

Insane Levels of Customization

To my surprise, it seems most objects in The Sims 5 have insane levels of control points and customization. Down to the smallest of details!

Creator @Simmattically shared additional footage showing just how much you can do with customizing objects. And all of that from the comfort of your smartphone.

My biggest surprise was seeing wallpaper customization of Sim laptops. You can apply different patterns and change colors all while having the in-game’s laptop user interface remain intact.

Closing down the laptop can also be done from Build Mode, where you can select different parts of an object and apply and change different skeletons to it. For example, beds have different categories for each object part from top to bottom. If you’d want to change the faucet on the sink you can now do so. And players who have been asking for different varieties and options for kitchen counters and cabinets will be happy to know that they also come with modular functionality.
