I think we as a society really need to get over the idea that 'natural' automatically = 'good'.

But for some reason the Left Wing response is so often to just pull out the Uno Reverse card and be like "well actually the Neolithic era was a socialist utopia because-" which is surely a much less revolutionary argument than people seem to think it is.

Firstly, because it encourages historical revisionism. Like, if everything people learn about the lives of Early Humans ends up getting twisted into some political argument about the Right Way To Live in the modern day, then people are obviously going to be motivated to interpret the facts in a way that supports their own personal values.

To give an example: suppose one day we somehow found incontrovertible evidence that Stone Age autistic people were not actually valued for our ability to sort animal bones or stay awake all night or whatever, but were rather beaten to death with rocks the moment we started showing symptoms.

What would we do with that information? Given that 'autistic people were valued members of society in Stone Age times!' is currently being used as a key argument for our right to exist?

Ignore it? Refuse to believe it? Shrug our shoulders say "well, guess we were wrong" and start beating people to death with rocks as an expression of the wills of our Pure Divine Ancestors?

Which brings me to my second point of: while I don't think stone age societies actually did beat autistic people to death with rocks for no reason, they almost certainly did a fuckload of stuff that we would consider immoral today.

I mean, they definitely didn't vaccinate their kids. If you went back in time and told somebody from the Neolithic era "poke your kid with the Magic Needle and they will be Protected From Disease" they'd probably go for it, but if we're going for natural = good then technically the anti-vaxxers have it right.

There's also a fair amount of evidence for cannibalism. And massacres. And infanticide as a method of birth control. The natural state of humanity is pretty shitty by most modern standards.

And like, I'm not saying that stone age cultures were cruel and inhuman either. They were very human.

The nature of humanity isn't inherently brutal or inherently pure… it's mostly, in fact, the desire to build something for ourselves and our communities that is better than what we have. Medicine. Shelter. Warmth. Clean sources of water. Consistent sources of food.

Humans didn't Get It Right in the stone age, and we sure as hell haven't Got It Right yet. But billions of people didn't spend their whole lives working to make things better for future generations, only for us today to decide that the only way to Get Things Right is to go all the way back to the beginning.

What was the first impressions of Cappuccino and Risotto when they met? Has that first impression changed, and how did it change if so?

Well, Cappu's first impression inside her head when she met Risotto for her application for the team kinda was…:

„HOLY SHIT WHY IS THIS MAN SO HOT OH NO OH NO OH NO I CANT ALLOW TO FALL FOR THIS MAN HE WILL BE MY SUPERIOR THIS CANT END WELL…his eyes creep me out and are so hot urgh i can’t stop staring at him but I should stop looking him in the eyes WHAT SHOULD I DO WAHHH!!“

…Cappuccino is deep down quite an awkward woman despite her fear based Stand, no matter how cold and though she wants to appear. And yeah, she was directly mesmerized by her potential new leader, not sure if that is a great start…well, definitely a fact she will need to bury and hide initially. She liked a lot instantly about him. Sure, his looks, which she first noticed, who couldn’t when a man dresses the way Risotto does? Full view on display I may say! But there was more to that, he seemed very intelligent, experienced, tactical, confident while not arrogant and stoic, all traits she loves seeing in other people since she admires these traits.

And she still thinks this positively of him until the day she died in Sardinia, even if she got to knew his warmer and more relaxed side with her, as well has some negative sides, sure, she still values him more than anyone else in her life for all they have been together until their ends.

Risotto was quite curious about the woman. He was fascinated by her Stand because the stories Formaggio already told him about her. Not only that but he found her honest and genuine behavior very pleasing, he can read people very well and see that she is serious about this job. He just needs her to be more relaxed since she seems very nervous, not the best trait for an assassin but she has potential in his eyes. He was also charmed by the way she expresses herself and her little gestures and accent of her voice, something just captivated him. But he fell in love later and quite slowly in comparison with her, it took a while until he realized his own feelings about her some months later.

Even after coming together he still is fascinated by her, be it her interests or just how passionate she can be for the stuff she loves.

Overall they had quite the positive impression about each other, even if Cappu was way more head over heels than Risotto, who firstly (understandably) just analyzed her powers and potential performance for the team and not much more, even if the sympathy was already there for him.

My discworld review after the first 17 books

1. Rincewind Series

I think the writing got stronger over time as the narratives became more plot driven. I still like the mystery/nondirectional aspect of TCOM and TLF though. There was an unpredictability about it that would be challenging to replicate with a main character that isnt like Rincewind: i.e someone who pretty much wants to live in boring times. Sourcery still bothers me the most. Firstly because the Wizards didnt get true repercussions about the damage they did. Secondly, while Sourcery ended on strong note, the sequel Faust Eric betrayed everything we've learned about Rincewind and the Dungeon Dimensions. It cheapened the drama invested on Sourcery and I found that aspect annoying. Interesting Times tho, picks up Rincewind's characterization once again and puts it back on the track, except that it doesnt explain what happened to Rincewind's status as a demon-bound-to-a-mortal kind of creature. It was great to see Rincewind showing off his political skills though. It's a good nod to his character being more attached and connected to the wider world compared to his wizard colleagues.

2. Wizards subseries

It's great that they've been fleshed out over time and over so many books. I like that since they're in Ankh-Mopork, they'd eventually get involved in many of the events that happen there. I like that their politics and power struggles are contained to mostly their own and don't really bother with the rest of the world. It's a refreshing POV to be in. Most surprising were their involvement in Mort, Moving Pictures, Reaper Man, Lords and Ladies, Men at Arms and Soul Music. They help expand the worldbuilding better. I still dont like The Bursar's characterization being sacrificed to make Ridcully a bit more respectable tho.

3. Death

Why is it that every major Death story just revolve around the thesis of "what happens when death gets distracted from his job"? Like I know why of course, he's so damn efficient that without him doing the work, everything in time-space just falls apart and tries to correct itself. Anyhow. Pratchett's Death is still the best take on real world death for me. It has helped me go thru difficult times, over grief and over the celebration of life. Death being one of the heart of Discworld is what makes Discworld truly a gift. You'll probably have to pull teeth for me to finish Reaper Man tho.

4. City Watch / Night Watch / The Watch

I haven't gotten far in these subseries but I do know that whenever cops are involved their ought to be high stakes suspense/thriller/action and drama. It's where Pratchett can truly flex on his whoddunit writing style. I find a lot of the narratives pretty standard action-thriller wise. Samuel Vimes is still my favorite of the bunch. I just cant get behind the character of Carrot, unfortunately (stop chasing me with pitchforks)

5. Witches

I'm gonna be honest. I dread the Witches subseries the most not because they're bad but because they tend to be dragging. With the exception of Equal Rites, the coven trio of Esmeralda Weatherwax, Gytha Ogg and Magrat Garlick leads the reader to familiar fairytale paths only for it to get upturned at the end. There are always lessons in the ongoing battle of what it means to be good, to be evil and most of all to be human. That's what make them slow at first. Reader must endure that feeling of "yeah ive been here before" for quite a long while. The payoff is always interesting nd thought provoking though, which makes everything worth it. I still dont know what to feel about Esmeralda Weatherwax being the universe's ultimate trump card. (Kinda same like rincewind and they both hate it)

6. Industrial Revolution

My favorite of all the subseries. Not a lot of people like them and they always get skipped in most reading lists but I often find the stories as the most shocking and creative. I like how they expand on the worldbuilding. I like the blatant parody on how the real world works. I like it when new character, beliefs and industries are introduced. I always thought I'd prefer the other subseries more but here I am lol. Cant wait to read the others.

Anyhow these are my discworld thoughts afer reading the first 17 books. Up next is Maskerade (which is making me groan coz i just finished Witches Abroad, which was very cool in fact and Maskerade is still Witch-centric)

But you can always not read them in publication order, one might say. But i wont do that. I'm a masochist unfortunately.

ep3: for ep3 firstly the pre-camp scene when wille picks up simon. the “big boy”. IM CRYING. and the hammock scene …….. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. but oh my god do not even get me fuckinf started on the rave scene. that one frame of wilmon. roshella and frederika’s jealousy (ok personally i am not a stella nor frederika fan. the way they treat Felice is an absolute no but still that scene killed me). BUT ALSO WILMON’s TENT FIGHT??? I MEAN LIKE. THE SHUSHING. WILLE REFERENCINF SIMON SELLIG TO AUGUST. ABSOLUTELY. FOUL. ok but the one that really did it for me was simon and linda comfort scene. i cried during that scene. i love love love linda and simon so much no one will get it.

ep4: wilmon flirting during the inspection. no further notes . anyways sara and her dad bonding driving singing scene. I didn’t include most of sara’s scenes in my favourite scenes but oh my god can I just say sara, august, and micke this season I loved their stories sos so much. and the singing while driving scene. it hurt me. because as much as I hate to admit it micke reminds me of my own dad (and wille. wille this season. when I watched some of his scenes I got fully afraid). so yeah that’s really important to me!! ok anyway there is also the baking scene. no further notes on this one too. OK BUT THE HALLWAY MAKEOUT I SCREAMED. WHAT. I really really really need edvin and omar’s commentary on this one.

ep4: not many fave scenes in this one but my favourite scene in this ep was probably the one after simon’s home was broke into and wille runs to him and embraces him in a hug. no kissing, no sneaky flirting (as much as I love those things) just pure warmth and love and care. I loved it.

ep5: actually ep5 Broke me but since young royals is just so amazing I still managed to have favourite scenes in this one. first is the music room fight. yes yes I know it was terrible but it was terrible and I loved it. I just really loved the intensity here and it was such a huge contrast from the previous seasons too because tbh s1 and s2 to me were mostly like wille being obsessed with simon and simon being an amazing confident assertive boyfriend. but this season…. this scene… it changed. wille’s angry so much and it’s like simon is just trying his best. he’s sacrificed some of his own feelings to care for wille’s (not saying he didn’t do that previous seasons) it was biggggg. ALSO THE MORNING HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I LOVE YOU WILMON. oh OH OH AND THEN AUGUST GIVING SAFA THE LETTER. like I said previously i actually am kind of rooting for august this season and sara I love her screen time so much she’s such an interesting character. so the combo of this … it was crazy. and I honestly really enjoyed the way sara just hugged august it made me smile very hard but ngl the kiss was abit too much for me. i think that was like…not good of them to do. last but not least wilmon birthday fight. can i just say. the whole cast in that scene were amazing. you know the famous fallen angel painting. that was how amazing edvin’s acting was. it was so so intense. and simon/omar .. i respect them so much in that scene. anyways we’re not gonna talk abt the bed scene because that doesn’t exist in my little head anymore :)

Believe it or not, I’m still obsessed over Clay Calloway, so here’s some detail picking.

Firstly, he has tile in his house. I don’t know how but I literally didn’t even notice this till the other day, it’s crazy. I don’t know if this is worthy going crazy over, but I found it incredibly interesting.

Also picture in this picture is a lot of book. Clay Calloway has bookoo books all over his place. We can see this even more in this part!

Clay Calloway just loves book and reading and stuff. Also, just like Jimmy Crystal, he has not heard of a coaster. I mean, at least he put on something, but I feel like that’s definitely a way to mess up a book. Maybe he just doesn’t care because he has so many LOL.

Also it’s kind of interesting to have blinds, since he lives in the middle of nowhere. I’ve always known blinds as a privacy thing, but I guess it can be used for lighting as well.

ALSO ALSO!! That is a shadow of a telescope. Clay Calloway likes astronomy REAL.

Onto more things I took note of:

He has speakers (top right and bottom right). I wonder if he still uses them. He hasn’t heard his own songs in over 15 years, since it reminds him of his wife, but does that mean he’s disallowed himself any music? Maybe, maybe not.

He also has a banjo!!!!! I bet he knows how to play it. Imagine the mad lad going ham on that thing! (Someone should totally draw that)

He also has another guitar. It most resembles the guitar later in the movies compared to the other guitars I’ve talked about, but it’s definitely not the same, as the one we see him using has a lot more details, and that signature spiky head.

Moving on, I don’t know if anyone has acknowledged this before, but he has scars on his nose! Very epic.

He also has a black tail. I learned this months back but like it’s still really surprising and interesting to think about, since his mane is white. Do you think maybe he dyes it? Maybe he dyed it before Miss Crawly and them got her to see how he would like dye, and if he would maybe like it on the rest of his hair (aka his mane). Just experimenting with hair dye.

Guess what? MORE ANATOMY. Here’s a really good pic of his natural white eye shadow he has. Like, that white is under his eye the entire movie. Very pretty. Also this pic shows off his scars a little bit more.

In this pic, you can see a closet full of Ruby’s stuff, including her wheelchair, biking helmet, and boots :(((. You could also probably tell from the number of books in her closet that she also liked to read, and the two of them definitely bonded over that.

Another thing they definitely also bonded over is plants. In the same scene there is a flower print, plus more books, obviously. They also have a death chair. For context, it’s normal for people with ADHD to just have areas they put stuff and forever forget about them, and the chair is probably the thing for that (Clay definitely has ADHD). For me, personally, I have my death closet. It’s kinda like a void. vvvv

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s obvious or not but he really really likes plants. Like, all these plants are being taken by him exclusively. Also, I love the architecture and I really love these types of porches. They feel so comfy. The big tree on the left definitely helps, too.

Barbie Movie Ramblings (Part 1)

Watched it yesterday and *loved* it. It was one of the most silly, snappy, stylish, and still smart movies I've seen in a long time, and thus I've got a lot of synapses shooting off. Going to let some of them ricochet around Tumblr instead of just inside my skull. Enjoy! Feel free to add on!

Okay ... Where to even start?

Firstly, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling both deserve an Oscar for the depth and breadth of their acting range on display in this film, Greta Gerwig for the masterful execution of her directorial vision. And whoever wrote the casting credits deserves death for how unhelpful they are. Practically everyone is either just "Barbie" or "Ken", so how am I supposed to reference them easily here? Gods damn it, at least give them their titles, like "President Barbie" or "Journalist Barbie"!

I'm still giggling at lines like "Oh! The Supreme Court!" for the Miss Universe billboard, or Ken's confession "When I found out patriarchy wasn’t about horses, I lost interest," or Ruth Handler's ghost's self-deprecating boast "I am Mattel. At least, until the IRS got to me." I mean it in the most positive way imaginable when I say this movie was like a cohesive feverdream, like a frenetic session of children playing yet with an internally logical plot.

Okay, now for the more intellectual thoughts.

Apparently, a lot of people are arguing about whether or not this is really a good Feminist Movie(TM), whether or not it's a movie for Boys(TM), if it's anti-men, if it's just one big commercial for Mattel products, etc.

For that last one, yeah, of course it's selling Mattel products. But grow up, because it's not *just* a commercial. Much like "The Lego Movie" is selling legos AND ALSO a heartfelt story and a fascinating work of artistic performance in its own right. "Barbie" is a text worthy of analysis beyond "it's one big commercial", and part of how intellectually rich it is comes from the very fact that it engages with its own tangled roots in capitalist consumption.

As for whether or not it's for Boys(TM)--or for anyone at all, for that matter--I admit I've always thought such considerations were kinda stupid. Not everything is meant for everyone, obviously, nor should everything even try to be. But, by that same token, anything can be for anyone. People are not static and thus neither are audiences.

The idea of a Target Audience can be helpful, sometimes, but I think it's both grossly oversimplified and overextended nowadays (because capitalism and marketing). We need to remember, not everyone in a Target Audience will resonate with a given story, not everyone outside a Target Audience won't resonate with a story, and that that can change for individuals depending on ... heck, even what kinda day they're having. I loved this movie, but I probably wouldn't want to watch it on a day when I'm feeling really depressed. Maybe the producers and executives didn't market it with Boys(TM) in mind, but boys absolutely can and should watch "Barbie". It's a fun movie, and they should be allowed to enjoy it, too. And, more importantly, learn from it.

Is it anti-men? Pff! No. And only idiot conservatives would even think that's a worthwhile question worth asking.

As for if it's *really* a *good* Feminist Movie(TM) ... I think anyone asking this particular question is forgetting how complex and nuanced Feminism can be. Indeed, Feminism isn't really a single thing--it's not a unified monolith--but rather a bunch of connected and sometimes conflicting schools of thought, philosophies, political stances, and so on. In general, it really would be more accurate to say Feminisms (plural) than Feminism (singular). Giving a hard no, therefore, I reckon is insisting that it can't be Good Feminism(TM) because it doesn't fit someone's too narrow idea of what Real Feminism(TM) is/should be. Giving a hard yes is probably falling into the same trap.

Put another way, Feminism is a lot like Jewishness. It isn't really about finding The Absolute Answer(TM) to a question, but about the process of thinking and debating by which you come to a possibly impermanent answer.

To give some examples from the movie: Does the Barbie doll actually empower little girls? She shows them they can aspire to be more than just mothers, that they can be anyone and do anything ... But she also reifies this idea that women must look beautiful and be perfectly accessorized while doing it. It's not "yes or no", but "yes and no". Is the narrator's fourth-wall-breaking line "Note to film makers: Margot Robbie is not the right person to cast to make this point." (when Barbie is having a crisis about being inadequate, not being pretty enough or smart enough, etc.) one that undercuts or underlines the movie's emotional climax? It interrupts the flow of the dialogue and suggests that a woman's self-perception is less important than how others perceive her ... But it reminds us that she's not an everywoman, but rather an actress playing a specific doll in a fictional story, and this is a self-aware performance about the need to be self-aware. Not "yes or no" but "yes and no". It ends with Barbie being excited for a gynecology appointment. What the heck? On the one hand, it echoes the reality and physicality she now inhabits. She's real and alive, so she has a body with reproductive organs thus feminine health concerns that are being acknowledged in a way that is open and not shamed. She's no longer plastic and high-heeled and perfect, and thus will have blemishes and cellulite and flat feet, and that's wonderful ... But it also suggests the idea that the realness of womanhood is physical and medical and biological--suggests that it's situated not in her soul but in her body, not in who she is but what she has in her pants. Not "yes or no" but "yes and no".

Ironically, if anything, it might be a good Feminist Movie(TM) specifically because it doesn't try to give us simple, definitive answers about if the Barbie doll and "Barbie" itself are feminist icons. Feminisms are too complex and nuanced to give simple, definitive answers.

I've got one more thought (or string of thoughts) in me about this movie, I reckon. About how it's campy and doing nonstop drag (the Barbies are doing over-the-top femininity, the Ken's over-the-top masculinity, and even the Real World is doing over-the-top reality and grittiness ... except for the Mattel headquarters) and deconstructing itself, and how all that is foundational to its message. But this post has already gone on for too long than I originally anticipated. So I'll give voice to that idea in a bit.

Thoughts on Sonic Frontiers

MAJOR SPOILERS!

Having recently finished my first playthrough of Frontiers, here are some of my thoughts on it.

Firstly, I think this game is fantastic! Not perfect, but I enjoyed it immensely and I'm excited for what the following mainline games could be like if they continue this same trajectory.

The open zone gameplay is, imo, the best Sonic has felt in a 3D environment so far! I had a blast exploring the open environments, finding secrets, fighting bosses, and completing challenges!

Speaking of bosses, I absolutely loved the Super Sonic fights!

I also enjoyed the fishing minigame. It's really simple and easy, but also pretty relaxing. Plus, it was just nice to see Big again in a mainline game. ^^

I also really loved the story and dialogue! The portrayal of the characters is excellent, and I like how they were explored in the game! I also love the callbacks and how the lore was expanded!

Speaking of, it was nice to FINALLY learn about the ancient civilization that left all those ruins and crazy tech behind on Angel Island! And I never would have guessed they'd be related to Chaos!

And yeah, I loved that they confirmed Sticks and Tangle to be part of the main continuity! Hopefully that could mean Sticks will finally show up in a mainline Sonic game sometime, and hopefully some of the IDW characters too!

As for negatives, the action stages felt kinda "meh". Not bad or anything, just felt kinda tacked on.

Chaos Island was a bit of a slog.

And having one or two more NPCs to interact with would have been nice. Though I guess that would go against the more somber tone they were going for with this game. Ah well.

And that final boss fight was a bit anticlimactic. If you play on easy or normal difficulty, the final fight is almost non-existent, being reduced to a single quick time input. And if playing on hard, it's WAY too hard! Just sucks they couldn't have found a compromise between it being absent or being so extreme. lol

Also, as an Eggman fan, I was really disappointed that you didn't get to fight him even once in the game. That just didn't sit right with me.

Speaking of Eggman, I had some mixed feelings about his characterization, specifically regarding Sage.

It just seemed odd to have Eggman feel genuine love for someone else, you know?

Or at least that was my initial gut reaction. But thinking back on it, I guess it's not inconceivable for his character. I mean, if he didn't care about anyone at all, then why would he keep Orbot and Cubot around despite their bumbling, or Metal Sonic after the Metal Overlord incident? If he didn't have any sentimental feelings for them, I would think he would have scrapped and replaced them long ago.

Plus Sage is one of Eggman's creations, so I'm sure at least part of the reason he feels so fond of her is because of his ego.

And even Archie's Eggman, one of the most vile and despicable depictions of the character, had his own artificial "daughter", Mecha "M" Robotnik, who he did seem to have some degree of fondness for.

Also, I really loved being able to unlock and listen to Eggman's journal entries. It was interesting hearing Eggman's thoughts on various topics, including his personal opinions on Sonic and his friends.

I also really liked Sage! She's an interesting character, and I'm curious to see how she'll be portrayed later on. What kind of villain will she be, considering how she developed in Frontiers? Will she even continue to be a villain?

But anyway, I think I pretty much covered all my main thoughts.

As I said, overall I enjoyed this game immensely, and I'm really looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here!

And I'm definitely looking forward to all the dlc they've got planned!

This whole story is reminding me of how I found a few months ago that one of my closest friends had a pattern of DV with his gfs, and it made me realize how much of a problem society's conception of abusers is because there is this notion that its visible to be abusive or a bad guy or a creep and "i could always tell there was something wrong" and theres never any grey zones and victims are always perfect and never fight back or handle it in any way that could be suspicious and the abusers dont also have pain or good sides and everything is black and white.

And like, in my case with my friend, the abuser was this super charismatic sweet guy who was really there for me when my mother got sick and painted himself as a feminist and called out guys for like, not going down on their gfs or whatever, and he had this super fucked up childhood which he still suffered a lot from and which i really empathised with, and it took SO long for me to realize how manipulative he could be and how he was refusing to take accountability for his actions and always justified it to himself and kept hurting people, and even if the good sides were probably still there and the pain was definitely there, it did not excuse any of the stuff he did or make him a good person.

And so, that's why I feel like Justins pov is so important, because that point of view is so important to help people but especially victims to understand abuse, and its so underrepresented in media which is super harmful. So it sucks that Blake and Ryan didn't want to show this point of view

Firstly, I'm sorry your friend turned out to be a worse person than you thought. That's a tough thing to have to realise. Secondly... yeah. I don't think, unless the person is like a complete and total sociopath AND a sadist to boot, they don't have their own justifications for their behaviours? Ryle, from what I've read/seen, has a sad backstory that's led to him having a bad temper and he hasn't like... dealt with that. He is very sorry every time he hurts Lily but he keeps hurting Lily anyway. Your friend, as you say, has a sad backstory that's allowed him to justify shitty to downright abusive behaviours. But both of them have (internal) justifications (that don't excuse them)?

I also think it's worth thinking about how specific relationships can lead to specific behaviours/reactions/etc. Just because someone is a good friend, or a good family member, or a good colleague/boss and all that doesn't mean they can't be abusive to their partner. And fwiw other way round too - someone can be abusive as a caregiver or as a boss or be a really shitty and selfish friend to the point of being essentially abusive and be awesome in other settings. Also just because they were/are good to YOU even in that same capacity, doesn't mean they can't be terrible to someone else. Like just because your ex wasn't abusive when you were together, it doesn't mean they're not abusing their current partner or didn’t abuse an ex.

So yeah, I mean these are HEAVY and COMPLEX topics. I think Colleen is a shitty writer but fwiw she did kinda in her own shitty way want to try explain and show how women often stay in situations even where they can and should leave. I think Justin, for reasons that still escape me, felt that he could use her source material as a springboard for discussions on toxic masculinity and how men are also victims of patriarchy and DV more broadly (beats tf out of me why he chose this source material but let's roll with it for now). I think Blake thought looking cute in florals would be fun. And I think Ryan was looking at how to make the most money possible and also dislikes Justin lol.

ok well it turns out I forget stuff way too easily um. so I actually made a mind map of stuff to work on from the last game from project 04 in ESP and yeah. no wonder i got the research done so fast it was so detailed asw and I FORGOT ABOUT ITTTT ok here it is fgjdhkd

ok anwyay so I honestly had soooo much stuff to work on, like firstly I had to figure out if I even wanted to do a game now because of how insanely painful it was last time.... but ofc as you can so clearly tell, I LOVE to torture myself. so. yknow. that didn't last long, though I did do some really stupid sketches of comics (I will post these later I very stupidly forgot my sketchbook at home. erm. yeah. anyway.

the next thing I kinda looked into was the story. "kinda" I wrote up 4 different storylines. actually those will get a post of their own each bevause I consider myself a genius lowkey for the things I do with evil/toxic/tragic lesbians in my brain (God I love my OCs)

then I went on to actually look into the technical aspects of how I was going to make the game now. Honestly, I'd basically given up all hope on ren'py, so I actually decided I wanted to use unity and make my own setup for the vn on there. I found a really good set of tutorials on youtube, I'll make a playlist of those and link them in a seperate post too!

Along with this, I began to look into how I would elevate the artwork of my game- at this point I was still in the old style, using the old sprites and visuals, so I wanted to see if I could perhaps rig the character models on live2d! I actually spent quite a while learning how to rig 2d images on there, but then opted not to go down that path because I genuinely just wouldn't have time for that. That being said, it did help me a lot when I did end up changing the artstyle of the game to simplify my character designs, as that was something I had to get used to when drawing to rig.

This was hoenstly such a great starting point for me because I ended up doing SO much research and it rly helped my game blossom!!!

i feel like that this trip was kinda a waste of time for me.

recap:

wayyy before the trip, i was invited by two people, my boyfriend and his friend. a couple weeks before the trip, i was told i wasn't invited or they just didn't want me there in the first place because it's a "boys' trip" or whatever that means. i was just left confused and pissed at the fact that these "friends" of my boyfriend don't even respect me as a girlfriend WHICH REALLY PISSES ME OFF SOOO BAD. like, how bad is it to show common decency and respect to your friend's significant other????????

anyways, when the trip came, everyone was goodie goodie. they said their formalities and started the trip as planned. one night in, they bought a card game, "truth or drink." obv we know how that ended. but not in the obvious way you think.

firstly, they excluded me from their conversations starting the time we got to the hotel after we bought the card games. afterwards, they ask me to get room service for the cups AND told me to tip the housekeeping. to top that off, when they started the game, they told me to put headphones on and sit in the corner of the room so they can talk to themselves. never in my life have i been ostracized that badly. i feel so fucking disrespected and awful to be put in that situation.

after the whole card game, they acted like it was nothing. they acted normal and one of his friends asked me if i wanted to go on a hunt to find one of their friends who had gone roaming around the resort. that friend has been the most genuine person i have talked to since i arrived on the island. i started to get ready to leave, but this one friend, lets call him M, said in the most disgusting and disrespectful way ever "what, you're actually coming?" i will be talking about M for the most part, just saying. M pisses me the fuck off and honestly ruined the entire trip for me. but anyways, I said "oh am i going?" then the genuine friend said "yeah you are, come on lets go" so we left feeling some sort of invitation at least from one of them. honestly, i think it was out of sympathy because he knew i felt deserted and left out. the worst part about it, my boyfriend didn't even make me feel better after the whole game.

moving on, we left for the beach because that's where the other friend roamed away. he was talking to his ex bc he was drunk obv. lol. left the guys to swim around in the beach and walked to the edge of the park to just breathe and be free from them since i highk needed it. sang smule ykno the vibes. then the boys eventually found me. they thought security was gonna kick us out but they were just talking to our friends.

we got back to the hotel from the beach, and my boyfriend was in the bathroom doing his business. the other boys booked 3 cars to drive around the island without letting bf know. and ofc, we checked out the next day from the resort, bf got mad because they were making plans without him. and me being me, had an "i told you so" face the entire time. he was mad ofc, but i can't blame him bc i would be too. this mans proceed to book his own car so we can drive around as well.

moving on, we got settled in our second hotel. and ofc, the boys were like "let's go to a bar!!" so we went. they told me to make friends. but HOLD UP, not just "friends" but the "skinny asian friends" the ones that they can hang out and can "do." how fucking disgusting is that. ofc i made friends, but not the ones they would like. i really thought that they don't have standards bc they're 30 or almost 30 and just wants "girls" but ofc they got standards because they don't like F a g s. aksjfdhakjdfhakjfh I CANT BELIEVE THEY EVEN SAID THAT ABOUT THEM. the most genuine and nicest people i have met for a night that truly brought up my mood just called them "fat asian girls" when in fact they were polynesian!!!!!!! like dude, how fucking DISGUSTING ARE YOU!!! getting ready for the club, bf stayed to get ready while the friends went out to get micky d's before the club to get carbed up. they come back with chicken nuggets for myself and bf, then guess what?? they got 2 fat meals for themselves to share... when they could've gotten 3 rice meals for us too?? where is the thought?? where is the sensitivity?? what kind of friends are they???

bf sensed my pissy mood and obv he caught on too. shared his thoughts on how unfair it was and ranted on how he's gonna get food too before the club. he even reFUSED to take a bite of whatever they're having bc apparently we're not worth the meal.

eventually, it was time to leave for the club.

we shared an uber and left. met up with two of their friends there.

then this is when the night gets interesting.

6 shots in and we got everyone dancing. this is also when a random girl starts dancing on the pole next to us. ofc the girl caught my bf's attention first. he said he's doing it for his friends and I'm like ok. so the girl brings the rest of her friends in. 3 other girls. and ooooooooooooooooooooo, guess what? M comes up to me and says, "hey THIS is the type of girls we want not those f a ag as. s" a complete eyeroll. yes, the girls were hot. i mean fuck everyone in the club was. now the boys got all their attention on them. one of them, D, the girl dancing onto each table was throwing herself onto one of our married friends AND my bf which i totally pushed her off of. others' is A, Ma, and L. M and L will be the most talked of. these girls are super nice and very mature. they were all in a nice state the entire time. M was putting himself into L most of the night while Ma caught the other two boys' attention. but eventually they were kicked out bc D blacked out.

after the club, we all went back to the hotel. M and two other guys went to pick up the girls to hangout bc they want THAT. my bf and the two other taken guys were chilling with me until my bf said he wants to follow them "to make sure they're alright." which in my opinion is one of the stupidest ideas ever. if they want to make bad decisions then just left them.

eventually i fell asleep.

the next day, they told me all about it.

bf said that they were scootering around the island and picked up M because he got "pissed" at one of his friends. the other guy eventually ubered back.

and ofc, M REMINDS ME that these are the girls i should befriend in the club. SIDE EYE.

this day was just a relaxing day. we just got brunch in the most expensive place ever (which is actually worth the price). i got a ride from one of the friend's auntie and took a nap.

we got ready to meet with their car group that's located in the island and ate Mexican dinner at this expensive ass taco place. but its chill. we got food and drank a lot. met like 4 titos that i didn't even know if they were being fr or joking for the most part but i kinda miss those vibes from the PH.

we finished eating and got a ride from two of them back to the hotel. ended the night.

last day for me and bf.

i woke up and got kona's bc ofc i need to stop by there every island visit. went to ABC to get my dad stuff and my friend some chocolates. went on a solo date at marugame then went back.

we left to shop again at the malls and got myself a matching set in kith. we made a video for our friend's bday then yeah that's ab it.

we packed up and left for our flight.

Just got a copy of Gamebook, the unofficial dmg companion, which features a section dedicated to the WorkBoy, written by Liam Robertson.

Little silly fact is that I actually "crossed paths" with Liam a few times online trying to do my own WorkBoy research, which I'll write about here for fun!

Firstly wanna say I was a looser teen with no credibility or resources, so ultimately its a very good thing that the prototype WorkBoy ended up being documented/archived by an actual games journalist and archivist, but the story is still a little funny to me.

As I remember it, I reached out to Frank Ballouz (the man behind the company making the WorkBoy) on twitter, trying to find any info about the project as well as holding on to a desperate hope that maybe he would still have a prototype laying around somewhere. I did this just cause I'm a huge fan of the Game Boy, and was deeply fascinated by the WorkBoy. It was just a personal curiosity.

After a few DMs were sent, Frank essentially responded "What? Now there's a 2nd journalist wanting to interview me?". This scared me bad because, again, I was a loser teen and not a journalist, so I ended up never sending Frank another message.

This mysterious other WorkBoy fan ended up being Liam Robertson, who later made a video for DYKG on Youtube about his research into the project (which I tweeted about when it came out, if you wanna see that here). Funnily enough, it seems like Liam had a lot of trouble finding anyone with info regarding the WorkBoy, taking a lot more time to research and reach out to others until contacting Frank. I, on the other hand, just searched the name of the company making the WorkBoy on LinkedIn and immediately found his twitter, lol.

Also funnily enough, Frank DID have a working prototype! Which ended up in the hands of Liam instead of me. Though this is maybe the saddest thing to ever happen to me, it's again probably for the best. I would never have had the brain power or ability to find the rom of the WorkBoy cartridge and run it on hardware like Liam was able to, and also I probably woulda dropped it or something.

Last thing of note, some time after messaging Frank but before the DYKG video released, Liam seemingly searched "WorkBoy" on twitter and ended up liking a bunch of random tweets I made about it.

So yeah, that's it. Just thought it was a kinda interesting story, the last time I wrote about it I was putting on a jokingly angry voice and also working within twitter character limits, so I thought I'd actually make an effort to write it all down here.

I think there are some questionable choices as far as it goes for the jokes about the Kamabakka kingdom and it being played for horror and using gross stereotypes for gags (I know it's intended to punish Sanji for his lecherousness but it's just not good)

However

As far as Iva and Bon-chan go, I will defend them WITH MY LIFE

So okay Ivankov IS based on Dr. Frank-N-Furter, yes but was also inspired by the real life actor and drag queen Norio Imamura, who Oda met via Luffy's VA Mayumi Tanaka who was part of the same theatre group. Oda misheard his name and ended up calling him "Iwa-san" by accident, which is the origin of the name. Norio left such an impression on Oda that he decided to write more drag queen characters into One Piece, and made a character based on him the queen of the drag queens.

Apparently when Norio found out about this he auditioned for the role in the anime and got the role! (although he lost that job later and isn't the current VA for Iva anymore)

So Iva has a very specific real world origin, va (yes I'm using neopronouns for Iva because Iva actually also uses neopronouns in Japanese lol*) isn't just a stereotype, va only exists in the first place because Oda was inspired by a real drag queen he met

(* okay Japanese pronouns don't work the same way as English pronouns, in Japanese pronouns are coded based on the gender or social status of the speaker not the person who's being referenced, Iva uses the pronoun "vatashi" instead of the usual "watashi" which is probably mostly a gag about vas name and the stereotypical "Transylvanian" accent referring to Frank-N-Furter, but it also serves to make vas gender coding more ambiguous)

Also Iva is just absolutely iconic and funny, and A REVOLUTIONARY. I can't even imagine the Revolutionary Army without Iva anymore, what an amazing addition

Iva's New Kama Land also introduces the trend of pretty much all the explicitly queer characters in One Piece being rebels or revolutionaries or pirates, which is definitely an interesting theme. The series never really dwelves into the question of homophobia, but there's definitely implications about how many queer people there are in prison and considering the whole totalitarian government thing it kinda adds up. Queerness is constantly associated with resistance to oppression in One Piece

I genuinely think Iva is a loving tribute to drag queens, specifically Norio Imamura, and I promise you if you give van a chance, it'll make sense. Va is a hero and an icon and an inspiration for others to fight for their own freedom, and also absolutely hilarious and va fits perfectly into the tone of One Piece.

Bon Kurei*, AKA Bon-chan, AKA Bentham, was introduced a lot earlier, literally in the 1990's which obviously wasn't a great time for queer representation, lbr. And yeah they're a stereotype in a lot of ways, including literally having the powers to deceive others by taking different forms, etc.

(* the official English translation is Bon Clay but I'm pedantic, the name is a reference to kure AKA the end of the year celebrations (roughly the latter half of December))

But the thing is that while they start out as a villain, technically, the first time the Straw Hats meet Bon Kurei, they immediately become friends, not knowing they're on opposite sides. The actual war drives them apart for obvious reasons, but afterwards Bon Kurei comes to their rescue, helps them escape from the Navy and finally sacrifices themself for the Straw Hats

So they're almost immediately presented as a sympathetic character who just happened to be on the wrong side, and who became a true friend. Very similar to Robin who was also part of Baroque Works and then ended up joining the Straw Hats by the end of the arc

And then Luffy of course meets Bon Kurei again in Impel Down and they help each other out, although Bon Kurei ends up once again sacrificing themself and staying behind, but this time as the new queen of New Kama Land. And they did technically achieve their goal of freeing Iva, with Luffy's help

They do tend to sacrifice themself a lot, but as they say: queer never die <3

I mean you can have a lot of opinions and even criticisms of them, but they're such a beloved character and a true friend of the Straw Hats

And of course these two aren't the only trans characters in One Piece, nor are the Kamabakka girls or the New Kama Landers

In the Wano arc (which was written a lot later than Alabasta and Impel Down) we get Kiku who is just a very beautiful trans woman samurai. Her story is very straightforward and her identity mostly comes up twice: firstly just the reveal that she is a samurai, which is clearly a male profession in Wano, and secondly when she's relieved to get to bathe with the other women instead of her fellow samurai at the end of the arc. Other than that, she's just another one of the Red Scabbards along with the others

Kiku looks and behaves like any other woman, aside from the fact that she's a samurai and uses the speech patterns of a samurai (which Zoro immediately notes as strange and why he's quick to figure out that she is a swordswoman and doesn't have any patience for her pretence of being just an ordinary villager)

And then there's Yamato my beloved <3

Look, I know a LOT OF PEOPLE think Yamato is bad representation because if trans man then why boobs (as if there's a lot of access to top surgery on Onigashima, on which he was imprisoned for pretty much his entire life because of his abusive dad) or because the reason he gave for "deciding" to become a man was because he idolised Oden

But here's the thing: who the fuck cares

Loads of trans men realise they want to be men because they see a particular man who inspires them and go "I want to be him"

And not all trans men can get top surgery. Not all trans men WANT top surgery

It's not even him "presenting" as female, he's wearing masculine clothes, he's just pretty. (It really annoys me when people say he's "not presenting as masculine"; he is! He's just not binding and he just happens to look very conventionally feminine (aside from being absurdly tall like his dad and also half of the Wano characters in general))

I mean if you wanna complain about the sideboob, I'm not gonna argue, but I'm gonna be real: I can deal with the sideboob because I love him so much.

Yes, the fact that everybody mistakes him for a woman is played of laughs, but at the end of the day everybody does just accept that yeah he's a guy with boobs. People do kinda make fun of him for his insistence that he's Oden but to be fair he is a bit of a weird guy about it. Then again we're talking about One Piece, this is pretty tame all things considered

Honestly though a bigger deal with him is the fact that his dad is Kaidou, who is a big bad villain man so Yamato kinda ends up having to convince every person he meets that he genuinely is on their side and hates his dad. And even now in the most recent chapter we saw him getting some backlash from the people of Wano for being Kaidou's son, so we'll see how that goes

Anyway, Yamato also gets to take a bath with the men like Kiku does with the women, and only the pervert characters are weird about it, everybody else is just like okay cool

He's also very much playing the role of a male character in the story, he's one of the very few fighters strong enough to face Kaidou and still remain in fighting condition afterwards*, he acts as a substitute father figure for Momo, and he becomes the guardian of Wano

(* in fact he's one of only two characters who go fully 1v1 alone against Kaidou if I remember correctly; and you can't even say Kaidou went easy on him because he's his son, since Kaidou has thoroughly demonstrated his willingness to kill Yamato)

Anyway, Yamato is great, he's a delight, I'm so happy to have him. I get feeling conflicted about some aspects of his design (notably the sideboobs) but I also think that any argument claiming that Yamato is bad representation is inevitably just going to insult some trans man who resembles Yamato, because frankly not all real life trans men care that much about passing as cis men either

Koby is played by a trans actor, Morgan Davies

As for sexuality, well, honestly there isn't a lot of romance in One Piece so mostly sexuality only comes up as gags, and usually it's very hetero, altho there are some exceptions like of course some of the drag queen characters, and like how even all women seem to be into Boa Hancock and Nami has that moment where she blurts out how she would love to have a sexy secretary like Kalifa (honestly Nami feels very lesbian coded to me, but it hasn't been explicitly confirmed so I'll ignore my theories for now)

(Just know that I have a whole collection of lesbian Nami moments because there are a bunch of them, some of them very suggestive like the Kalifa thing but also the Wanda thing (literally wearing each others' clothes, istg) BUT it hasn't been confirmed, it's not explicit)

Luffy is explicitly uninterested in romance or sex, this was confirmed by Oda in SBS and becomes a whole plot point on Amazon Lily since it makes him immune to Hancock. Zoro is definitely uninterested in women, and probably also men, but that latter part hasn't been confirmed. Either way neither of them are straight

I don't think there's any queer romance in One Piece though, even between background characters. At least I can't think of anything. Again, there isn't a lot of straight romance either and when there is, it mostly serves the purpose of "well these characters need to have parents I guess"

I don't expect there to be queer romance in the future either, Oda is a straight man (I'm pretty sure) and he just doesn't seem all that interested in writing romance in the first place

But there definitely are queer characters in One Piece and personally I think they're great. I'm not gonna call them perfect representation but honestly I'd rather have representation that brings me joy

And the queer characters in One Piece definitely do

(For the most part, again I'm not wild about the Kamabakka stuff, at least when it was first introduced. It's gotten less frustrating now that they're just characters in the story instead of gags at Sanji's expense)

Emporio Ivankov and Bon Clay seem to be celebrated as excellent examples of queer representation in anime. However, at least to me, they both seem like horrible caricatures. Please tell me I'm wrong, and this is just One Piece's unusual art style playing tricks on me. Because One Piece has had so many Characters in the Canon Pride polls, and they all look like caricatures in some way. Now I know it's a Shonen anime that's been on for a long time, so the bar isn't necessarily high for good lgbtq representation, especially when compared to others in the same genre from the same time period. But does One Piece have good lgbtq+ representation and characters, not just queerbaiting like actual canon characters? I specifically named Emporio Ivankov and Bon Clay because they look the worst to me based on character design.

But for more info, Emporio Ivankov ate The Horu Horu no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants the user the ability to create a variety of special hormones that can alter the recipient's body in any way the user desires, making the user a Hormone Controlling Human. So they can change their gender and anyone's gender at will. They are a founding member of the Revolutionary Army. Plus, they are also the Queen of an island of canon genderqueer people.

Plus, their design is based on the iconic Tim Curry character Dr. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

This is Bentham, aka Bon Clay. He ate The Mane Mane no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to turn themselves into a physical double of anyone they touch, making the user an Imitating Human. So basically, they're a shapeshifter with some limitations. He did start out as a villain, but now he's the queen of the Queer Paradise "Newkama Land" in Impel Down that the prisoners made to hide from the guards. It was initially created and ruled over by Emporio Ivankov until they escaped and returned to their home island.

Everyone was watching them. Truthfully, it was a wonder they hadn't noticed by now, but that was most likely to be expected from two people who were obviously in love with each other and still hadn't done anything about it yet.

Three years now. That's how long it had been since Y/N joined the team, and from the first day, she and Spencer were glued at the hip. She was the only one who actively listened to and laughed at his long, obscure jokes, and as their friendship blossomed, he stared following her around like a lovesick puppy. It was sickly-sweet, truth be told.

And the longer it went on, the longer they danced around the inevitable, the more fed-up the BAU got.

Currently, Spencer and Y/N were reading a book together. Like, they were actually reading together, sitting side by side while they took turns reading aloud. They did it every day when they came into work, and when they finished one book, the other person would pick the next one.

"I want to say it's annoying, but it's actually kind of sweet," JJ pointed out, peering through the blinds in Hotch's office, where they all gathered to spy on their friends.

"Yeah, but they've been doing it for almost two years," Emily stated. "You'd think that by now they'd have at least kissed..."

"Maybe they have and they just... haven't said anything?"

Penelope piped in this time, shaking her head. "No, Y/N would have told me, she tells me everything. And I mean everything."

"Well, what about Reid? Has he said anything to you?" JJ asked, turning to Derek.

He sighed. "No. But you know how he is, if he could avoid telling me anything at all about his love life, he would. And he has."

"Well, maybe you should say something to him," Emily suggested.

"You know he'll just shut me down and deny it."

"Then Garcia should do it."

She thought about it for a second before turning to Derek. "I am excellent at getting information out of people."

Suddenly the door opened, and everyone turned around to see Hotch entering his office, stopping for a second to take them all in before closing the door behind him.

"Sir, we can explain—" Penelope started.

Hotch held up a hand and made his way to his desk. "You're spying on them, aren't you?"

A quiet chorus of mumbled 'yes' and 'yes, sir's sounded through the room before he actually sat down with the most miniscule of smiles.

"I'd say to make sure you all leave one at a time so they don't catch on, but something tells me they wouldn't notice anyway."

A few hours later, the team made their way to the jet in little groups.

Firstly, Penelope pulled Spencer away into her office for a 'special meeting' that he was only slightly concerned about. But when she finally closed the door, he found it was nothing like what he expected to hear.

The first words out of her mouth were, "When are you going to tell her?"

"I'm... I'm sorry?"

Her face scrunched as she pointed a finger at him. "Don't play dumb with me, 187, I may not be a profiler, but I know love when I see it. You and Y/N are perfect for each other, and you guys are literally driving us mad with the sexual tension."

"I—Garcia, we're just friends, I... I don't..."

"Look, you've got a plane to catch, so I'm not gonna keep you any longer, but everyone can see it, Reid. You two? You're practically soulmates."

He really didn't know what to say after that. So he wordlessly turned and made his way to the jet alone, thinking the entire way there about what Penelope had said.

Of course he'd always thought Y/N was pretty. And there wasn't a doubt in his mind that she was the one person on the team he knew he could come to when he had something he was excited to share, because she was always down to hear him talk. And... he never really realized it until now, but it always warmed the deepest parts of his soul when he saw how her eyes lit up at the chance to hear him talk—to just listen to what he had to say.

He thought back to every time they read together, how her leg always brushed against his and how it always seemed to comfort him. How her voice when she read aloud always seemed to put him in a trance, like a lullaby. She was his warm place, his safety net...

But... that was totally normal for friendships, right? More often than not, platonic friendships carried that warm familiarity that also came with romantic ones. It wasn't uncommon.

Still, it set off an explosion of fireworks in Spencer's stomach to just think about sitting next to her on the jet.

Meanwhile, everyone else was there, going through some files on the case when Emily sat down in front of Y/N and cleared her throat.

"What's up?" Y/N asked politely with a small smile.

"Nothing, it just... I saw you and, uh... Dr. Reid looked pretty comfy this morning."

Her eyes widened. "Oh, uh... Were we reading too loud? We've been trying to keep it quieter because we figured it was a bit unconventional—"

"No, no," Emily laughed, thinking to herself how absolutely perfect they were for each other. "I mean... You were really close... Like maybe you're... into him."

"O—oh... Well, I—I don't... Um..."

With another laugh, Emily reached her hand out to reassure her. "I'm not trying to put you on the spot, Y/N, it's just that we've all... noticed how close you guys have gotten over the years and it looked like maybe you two..."

By the redness that colored Y/N's cheeks, Emily wasn't buying it one bit. Yet, she indulged her, nodding and patting the little table in front of her before getting up to move to a different section. "If you say so."

She walked away, leaving Y/N with a newfound... tension within her that she couldn't really shake. And it only amplified when Spencer walked onto the jet and took his usual seat next to her.

They greeted each other with small waves, but something felt off. And when his hand brushed up against her leg on accident, she felt a light buzz course through her veins, like some type of switch had been flipped.

It's only because of what Emily said, Y/N thought. She just got in my head, that's all this is.

But the longer the day went on, after landing in Idaho and setting up at the precinct, the buzz only amplified. Every time he said her name, she felt it kick up, and likewise, whenever she said his, he felt the thrum of his chest get heavier.

Everyone could tell, too, though they seemed rather amused by it all. While Y/N and Spencer were out at the ME's office, Emily, JJ, and Derek sat at the table in their temporary office and talked it over.

"I actually feel kinda bad," JJ said. "I mean... It seems like they're just being awkward around each other now..."

"That's not a bad thing... It just means they're finally starting to come to their senses," Emily countered with a wave of her hand. "They'll be fine."

Derek scoffed with a smile. "Yeah, I give it 'til the end of the case. Without work to distract themselves from each other, there's no way they won't say something."

Sure enough, the topics of conversation walked through the door just then, immediately putting distance between themselves on opposite sides of the table. And before anyone could say anything else, Spencer jumped the gun, going into detail on what they discovered about the case.

"We won't be heading home until tomorrow morning, so I booked us all rooms at the hotel on main street. I'll give you your keys when we get there. Good work, everyone, get some rest."

Hotch disappeared into the night, leaving the rest of the team to pack up a few things in their office before following him.

Y/N chatted happily with JJ, but deep inside she was nervous. Because everyone had been acting strange all day, pairing her and Spencer up every chance they got, and it was impossible to miss all the fake 'I wasn't looking at you guys' stares into space that they all constantly adorned.

Not to mention the fact that ever since Emily even brought it up to her, Spencer also seemed nervous around her. Their whole dynamic had been thrown off, and now she could barely look at him without immediately looking away and wondering what it would be like to kiss him. Now that the thought has been planted in her head, it's all she can think about, and it's very distracting. And knowing how... interested her friends seem to be in her predicament, the biggest fear she has at the moment is that she and Spencer will be rooming together.

As they got into separate cars and headed to the hotel, she fiddled with her thumbs, picking at the chipped nail polish and hoping that she'll get to rest easy.

And as Hotch handed out room keys in the lobby, she felt her heartbeat pick up, Emily and JJ sharing a key and Derek walking off with his own.

And then he said the one thing she was afraid of, and it almost froze her completely.

"I was only able to get two rooms with double beds, so you guys will have to share, if that's alright."

At that point Y/N would have rather shared a bed with Rossi, because that would have been less awkward. But she and Spencer both nodded, he took the key, and they both silently made their way to the room, keeping their heads low.

Even as they finally stepped into the room the air felt fragile, like one wrong move could break it and send them into space, where there wasn't enough breathable oxygen to keep them alive. And much like in the office today, they kept their distance on opposite sides of the room, separated by the bed.

It was Spencer who broke the silence first.

"I can take the floor if you want..."

The small, sweet way he said it almost made her heart shatter. "O—oh no, you don't have to. That would be silly."

"Are you sure? Because I can—"

"No, it's okay, really. I don't mind."

They stared at each other for what seemed like forever, before Y/N's phone buzzed in her pocket, and she turned around to answer the call.

As she walked into the bathroom, answering, "Hi, Mom," before shutting the door, Spencer let out a long breath and rubbed his eyes, wondering how he was going to get through the night. He also wondered if Penelope had talked to Y/N as well, because this awkwardness they were experiencing was most certainly double-sided. And if that was the case, did that mean... she was in love with him, too? Firstly, was he even sure he was in love with her in the first place?

Maybe a little, he decided, thinking back to practically every single moment they've ever spent together. And as he quickly changed into pajamas and situated himself in bed, he thought about what it would be like to kiss her. Is that something he would want to do? Could he see himself kissing her over and over again for the rest of his life?

He had his answer when she walked out of the bathroom, wearing shorts and a tank top, her hair out of its ponytail and cascading down her shoulders as she plopped her phone down on the chair in the corner of the room and walked to the bed.

He tried to look away, but he couldn't. And he was thankful in a way for this newfound uneasy air between them, because she refused to look at him, and it gave him all the clearance he needed to follow her trail around the room.

But when she finally settled into bed, and as he felt her weight dip beside him, Spencer looked down at his lap. He was afraid the close proximity would give him away.

She cracked open a book and read in silence for a few seconds before she turned to him. "Did... Is this distracting? I can stop and we can just go to sleep if you're tired..."

"Oh, n—no, it's not distracting. You're fine. I was, um... I was going to grab a book of my own anyway."

He swung his leg over to get out of bed, but Y/N stopped him. "Well, um... I, uh... I know we're already in the middle of a different book, but if you wanted to, we could, um... read this one together? I—I think you'd like it, it's about the—"

"Sure. I—I'd um... I'd like that. Whatever it's about, I'm sure I'll like it. Y—you know, since you said it was good. You have good taste, so I t—trust your judgement."

He was just rambling now, and hearing Y/N laugh a little, he internally berated himself for letting it get awkward again.

Nevertheless, she opened up the covers to get underneath, and slowly scooted closer to him. Once their knees touched, they both jumped a little, but Spencer cleared his throat and Y/N busied herself by trying to find the first page, neither of them commenting on the obvious shock of butterflies that shot through both of their insides at the tiniest contact.

"Do you mind if I start?" she asked softly, turning her head slightly to the side so she could see him. He nodded, giving her the go ahead, and she turned to the page, focusing on the words in front of her.

Unsurprisingly, it was easy for them to get into a familiar groove. They took turns reading each few pages, and stopped in between to discuss things they'd read. It also wasn't surprising to find that they gradually got closer, their arms and legs now completely touching side by side and their faces dangerously close as they leaned down to read.

Spencer had just finished reading a chapter, reaching out to turn the page, and Y/N seemed to have the same thought, because her hand collided with his in a way that left no room for subtlety, or drawback to avoid that it even happened. Their pinkies interlocked, and Y/N found herself entranced by the curves and peaks of his hand. How each of his fingers slightly twitched at the contact, and how prominent the veins in his forearm were.

Her heartbeat picked up, and his did, too, as he focused on how tightly her pinkie was curling around his own, desperate not to let go.

"Y/N," he whispered. It wasn't a question, nor a warning, but it rolled off his tongue softly as if it was the sweetest word he'd ever had the pleasure to say. It was just one little word, her first name, conveyed with such adoration and obvious pining that he was afraid he'd scared her away.

But she held his pinkie tight, the book resting open beneath them on their adjoined knees, and then looked over at him.

And her eyes held the same weight as her name on his lips.

It was unclear of who moved first, but it happened so fast that surely it didn't matter. In a flash, their lips were joining in soft desperation, and rather than locking pinkies, Y/N shifted her hand to weave all their fingers together. The squeeze he gave her hand made her sigh against his mouth, and it was all the most relieving thing in the world.

After she pulled away, he chased her face for a second, not wanting it to end. But his eyes flew open and when he saw her staring back at him, her lips slightly puffed and her eyes almost hungry, he knew he didn't have to worry about the moment ending any time soon.

The book was long forgotten right then, tossed across the room somewhere as their clothes soon followed.

"So, how do you think the love birds got along last night?" Emily asked to no one in particular as the group gathered in the lobby.

Derek snickered. "If they came to their senses, I'm sure they got along just fine."

Everyone laughed at that, just as said love birds made their way to the lobby.

"Sleep well?" JJ asked, obviously trying not to smirk.

"Mhm," they both mumbled in response.

They were going to leave it alone, but that's when Rossi showed up, peering over in Spencer's direction. Then he pointed briefly to his neck. "You got a little something there, genius."

Everyone clapped excitedly, Emily letting out a low whistle and Derek rounding it off with a loud and proud, "Atta boy!"

The redness on both Y/N and Spencer's faces didn't clear up the entire way home.

And after the text that Emily sent out to Penelope, it was looking like it might get even worse.

"Welcome home, my beautiful family! Come on, I have something special for everyone in the round-table room."

Penelope led the way, Y/N and Spencer bringing up the rear.

"I'm sorry about this morning," she whispered. "I really didn't even notice I'd made a mark, I—"

"It's okay," he reassured her. "I... I guess they kinda knew we'd get to that point eventually anyway."

"Yeah... I just wish it wouldn't have happened so soon, you know? We're never gonna live this down."

She wasn't expecting him to lace his fingers with hers, and the action made her smile.

They'd fallen a bit behind, so when they finally caught up to everyone in the room, it was terrifying to see them all with knowing, mischievous smiles. And before Y/N could explain, Spencer started speaking.

"Okay, okay, yes. Y/N and I... finally... got together last night. But you can't make it weird, and I'm not going to let you make it weird, because—"

"Ohh, it's a little late for that, boy wonder," Garcia said, giggly and holding out a cake box.

Spencer and Y/N looked at each other briefly before taking a look, immediately gasping and going red.

It was a small cake, shaped like a heart with a red trim of frosting around it. And right in the middle, in pretty red cursive, were the words, "We finally had sex!"

"Penelope!" Y/N whined and shoved her face into Spencer's chest, the heat radiating off her face like a space heater on high blast.

The howling laughter that erupted from everyone else in the room was something neither of them would forget.

But even through the curtain of embarrassment, Y/N and Spencer both knew that beyond it awaited a very promising relationship, especially with friends who supported them. Even if that support manifested in rather... enthusiastic ways.

And, despite the initial embarrassment of it all, the cake tasted pretty damn good.
