National Tofu Day
Tofu, the bean paste meat replacement, is enjoyed and appreciated by  people all over the world. For vegans and vegetarians, it is the perfect  way to be able to avoid eating meat while still getting enough protein  in the diet. Tofu has been around for centuries as a traditional eastern  dish.
Tofu can be prepared in a variety of delicious ways and can be placed  in so many dishes that it is the perfect filler. Tofu Day aims to  celebrate the creativity that tofu incites in people and celebrate its  long history as a beloved dish by many.
For those who donât think they are really fans of tofu (because,  honestly, the name âbean curdâ isnât doing anyone any favors), this  would be the perfect day to try it â or try it again.
So get some tofu on that plate and get ready for Tofu Day!
History of Tofu Day
Tofu is considered to be an essential part of the diets of people in a  variety of different cultures, especially in the Eastern Asian diets.  Having much the same importance as meat, milk, and cheese, tofu is  undoubtedly a staple. Although it might be newer on the scene in the  West, the earliest recordings of tofu were in 900 AD, most significantly  in Japan.
Tofu, a word literally meaning bean curd, has been called numerous  names in the Chinese and Japanese languages, some meaning âmorning  prayerâ and other interesting cultural references. It wasnât until the  1800s when English-speaking translations of cookbooks came around that  the term tofu was used. Then, later on down the road when the meat  substitute really began to gain popularity in the West, cookbooks in the  1970s began using the term Tofu as its official name.
After being passed down through thousands of generations, Tofu today  has become an iconic food and healthy alternative, particularly for  those who wish to live a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle.
Tofu can be prepared in numerous ways, and in Japan, each province  has its own way of preparing tofu individual to its local culture. This  soybean creation is loved by many people, as long as they know how to  use it well.
Tofu Day aims to celebrate the long and intricate history of tofu,  and showcase how it has influenced cultures everywhere. Tofu Day is  celebrated on this day each year all over the world as one of the most  versatile and nutritious foods on the planet!
How to Celebrate Tofu Day
On Tofu Day, people go out of their way to eat tofu and get creative  with their cuisine by adding tofu to any dish. Itâs fun and easy to try  something new with tofu, or to go back to a well-known and appreciated  standard recipe. Try out these ideas for paying homage to this versatile  and amazing food on Tofu Day:
Try Making Dishes with Tofu at Home
Tofu can be used in so many dishes, so one of the best things you can  do on this day is to look up recipes involving tofu and give it a try!  Try a hand at making pad thai, bibimbap, tikka masala, and soba salad  with tofu.
Get Creative with Tofu Dishes
The problem some people have with tofu is that they think of it only  in one way: chunks of a slightly soft and slimy substance. But it  doesnât have to be that way! The complete versatility of tofu means that  it can be cooked (and even baked) into a wide variety of dishes that  will enhance and complement the flavors.
Try these interesting ideas for creative ways to use tofu at home:
Vegan Creamed Spinach. For those who have  chosen a healthier, more earth-friendly vegan lifestyle, they may be  missing out on some favorite dairy dishes. Tofu is a great way to bring  those favorites back by using a tofu cream cheese substitute.
Vegetarian Taco Bowls. Tofu isnât just for Asian type foods! Try substituting the meat from tacos with tofu and create a whole new style of food.
Crispy Tofu with Maple Soy Glaze. Tofu  doesnât need to be soft! Change the texture by draining it and then  cooking it in hot oil. Drizzle with glaze and garnish with scallions.
Host a Tofu Day Party or Gathering
For those who are looking for something to do closer to home, then  celebrate Tofu Day by hosting a party with all tofu dishes. Invite  friends and family to the celebration and help them learn more about the  benefits tofu can offer. Plus, if they are a little skittish, this is a  great opportunity to open their minds about the way tofu can really be  very delicious.
Take a Trip to Japan for Tofu Day
Those who truly want to experience tofu in all of its glory should  head on over to Japan, where tofu started. In the midst of various  tourism activities, take the opportunity to try some delicious tofu  dishes on the eastern side of the world.
Between the bamboo forests, cutting edge skyscrapers, and placid  religious temples, Japan is a place like no other. And because they  invented tofu, they also know how to make it better than almost any  other place on earth. Try out these Tokyo restaurants for some excellent  tofu dishes:
Asakusa Hamasei Tofu Kawakaze. Just a  delightful ten minute walk from the subway stop, this restaurant offers  daily specials and seasonal menus that will delight the taste buds. Its  location offers a sense of calm and serene in the midst of a busy city.
Tofu Room Dyâs.  Enjoy a meal in or get a quick lunch to takeawayâor enjoy a quick bite  with a traditional afternoon Japanese tea. For dessert, donât forget the  Tofu Cheesecake which is delicious and refreshing.
Sasanoyuki. This  famous, old-fashioned restaurant offers traditional charm with some of  the best tofu in Tokyo. This place is considered by some to be the  inventor of the silken tofu.

so asinine when people on tiktok or instagram or whatever are like 'finally, here's a hotgirl recipe for a single serving meal!' as if the hottest thing in the world isn't leftovers. you want me to look at your dirty cutting board and pan and single portion with no seconds or leftovers to be found and say it's convenient? brother i'm making that full family sized meal and it's gonna last me three days. that's two days of instant food and no dishes to wash. get on MY level.
#it boggles my mind whenever i see this stuff like if you're already committing to cutting an onion then just make enough to have more later!#to be honest i just don't think it's much easier to make a small amount of food vs a lot of food#when you're already chopping and measuring regardless!#is it really so much harder to cut a whole vegetable than a half?#if anything you're doing yourself a solid by not leaving a random ass vegetable half laying around in your fridge to be forgotten#like my tofu fried rice takes a lot of chopping but it lasts me four to five meals#to me that's what convenience is!#like to be clear my issue isn't with the existence of single serving recipes it's with the reels i keep getting#that insist a single serve meal involving a ton of chopping and cooking is a revelation and a massive convenience#there is nothing convenient about a single serve meal when it takes that much effort

I'm so pleased my local grocery sells oat milk now. It's a little bit more expensive than a regular gallon of milk but it is sooo so worth it.
Thinking about putting aside a little money from my paycheck specifically for a carton oat milk every few weeks lol
#i stay pretty frugal when i get groceries but there are some things i try to splurge for#real cheese + minced garlic instead of dried + honey + and now oat milk#i would add tofu to the list (my grocery!!! sells tofu!!!) but i only really like it fried so it's not terribly healthy for reg splurging#my old roommate says getting irish butter is something i should try splurging for instead of only using margarine.#but idk. i don't know if real butter matters that much to me.#maybe if i made bread more often.

I feel so cheated sometimes bc I fucking hate the taste and smell of meat (I categorize seafood as meat too) and beans
I'm Mexican-American
My Mexican mother is considered the best in the family for Mexican cuisine, everyone loves her food and I can't eat most of it
I can't eat it or smell it without wanting to gag (I don't, but I need to leave after a while to get a break)
Mexican food is considered one of the best food cultures in the world, my mother was born and raised in Jalisco and brought all the recipes she learned from her mother with her
I grew up on fast food and faster/easier recipes because she needed to put more time and effort into cooking for the rest of the family
I also grew up in Los Angeles, one of the best places in the US for authentic Mexican food. We'd go to Mexican restaurants when she didn't feel like cooking (and on one memorable occasion, a house/restaurant that was recommended to my parents at church lol), and if not Mexican restaurants, then some fast food place or seafood buffets. I stopped going out to eat with family often in my teens bc it wasn't worth taking me. I also remember being judged and just hated the experience and would make up excuses to not go
I don't know, I was on my tiktok fyp and I kept getting a lot of stuff about Mexican food and I just hate being reminded of my fucking defects so much. I didn't choose to utterly despise meat and beans and I feel so left out of my own culture. If I could eat it, I would, but I can't.
My siblings grew up on all of these amazing foods, and I grew up right alongside them, eating something else.
#at least i'll always have my taquitos de queso and tostadas con col#and my fruit or vegetable salads with lime and tajin (chamoy optional)#one time i was making myself a tofu stirfry and my uncle made a joke about how i should have been born asian#bc i love tofu and i make the occasional asian dish#and while it didn't really bother me at the moment. it just makes up one part of the collective memory in my life of food trauma#it sounds a bit extreme but i think it is a bit. i have issues with food and sometimes guard my food a bit too much bc it's mine!#you can eat whatever the fuck you want don't fucking take my food away from me!#y'know?#still thinking about that time all of the only cheese pizza was eaten and all was left was pepperoni and supreme#i almost cried#anyway just venting ig this got away from me#i will never shut up about my fucked up relationship with food and eating in front of people even family#hasan't#personal#like actually personal not just my usual personal tag#venting#self pity#mexican food#i lowkey get triggered by people who say the best way to experience culture is through food and then it's just a list of food with meat#i can't#just...i need to start eating indian food fr fr

World Tofu Day
World Tofu Day is annually observed on July 26, in honor of tofu, a plant-based alternative to meat that is manufactured from soybeans. Tofu has seen a surge in popularity as more people switch to a plant-based diet. For vegans and vegetarians, it is particularly appreciated and enjoyed because they can avoid eating meat, but still get some much-needed protein from it. Even if you are not a vegetarian, but youâre curious about tofu, today is a good day to give it a try.
History of World Tofu Day
The Eastern Asian diet, which relies heavily on tofu, is a staple in many countries around the world. As important as dairy products like milk and cheese are to regular eaters, tofu is an indispensable part of every vegetarian diet. It may be newer in the West, but tofu dates back to 900 A.D. in Japan, where it is most popular.
Tofu, or bean curd in English, has several different names in the Chinese and Japanese languages. The term âtofuâ wasnât coined until the 1800s when English translations of cookbooks began to appear. In the 1970s, as the meat replacement gained widespread acceptance in the West, cookbooks began to use âtofuâ as an official designation. People who prefer to adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet have grown to rely on tofu. It has become a classic meal and a nutritious alternative for them.
Each Japanese province has its distinct method of producing tofu, reflected in the wide range of ways it is consumed. When soybean production is executed well, it is enjoyed by a large number of people. Tofu is one of the most versatile and nutritious foods available worldwide. National Tofu Day seeks to highlight the numerous ways tofu has influenced people around the world while giving them the required nutrients.

World Tofu Day FAQs
What is the purpose of the tofu in recipes?
Silken tofu, which is made by pureeing firm tofu to a silky paste, is used in a variety of dishes to enhance the creaminess and texture. It can also be used in place of eggs. Regular tofu, often known as bean curd or Chinese-style tofu, is much more widely available.
What's the best kind of tofu to use in a recipe?
If youâre looking for all-purpose tofu that can be sliced and cubed, extra-firm tofu should be your go-to. It can be used for pan-frying, stir-frying, baking, grilling, and scrambling.
Which method of cooking tofu is the healthiest option?
Tofu can be cooked in a steamer, which is the simplest and healthiest method. Line the steamer basket with paper or a cabbage leaf to keep the tofu from breaking apart.

Low-cost protein source
To make tofu, soybeans are separated into lumps and then pressed together again to form blocks. A good source of protein, tofu is low in fat and carbs. It is made up of fewer saturated fats, a good source of iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and calcium, as well as vitamins and minerals.
Many people believe tofu is tasteless which makes them unwilling to try it. When cooked properly and flavored with the right ingredients, tofu is very delicious. It acts like a sponge, soaking up the flavors of whatever it is cooked in. Tofu is a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes, from salty to sweet. It can even be used to make cheese.
Tofu is surprisingly affordable and relatively easy to make from scratch. Most supermarkets, grocers, and Asian specialty shops carry tofu. It's a great ingredient for large-scale meals for a large number of people.

Gotta mention too that food has way less to do with being fat than your genetics do, and stress is an immense part of it as well. My personal anecdote is I lost a major source of stress in my life, needed to eat out more from necessity, and still dropped 20 pounds in three months.
god i hate how normalized diet culture and shit like bmi and calories are. bmi is based on eugenics. calories are a measurement of how much energy something gives u and not at all of how much weight or fat ull gain. diets have been proven to be harmful and ultimately unhelpful in actually losing weight. fatness has been largely proven to not be inherently unhealthy and doesnt inherently cause health issues.
if anyone has more good links to add on then please do and if anyone knows more on this stuff than me then dont hesitate to correct me!
#so mad that my doctor uses bmi#fuck that shit#how about instead of caring that I'm fat for the sake of the visual of being fat#we care about the potential issues that may or may not come with it#also I recently figured out that apparently I've been like protein starved since forever#but my doctor never cared about that#only about how much fat I was eating#never mind that I already avoided fats sugar and have always eaten a ton of fiber and vegetables#I never realized that apparently I need about twice as much protein as I've been getting *at least*#since I've always kinda avoided protein because I assumed I'd be eating too *much* of it#even now trying to add more beans and dairy and protein powder to my diet I don't think I'm getting as much as I should be#82g a day is apparently my government-assigned protein bare minimum and that's. a lot.#a huge scoop of protein powder is 30g and I can't stomach a full serving of that in anything#been trying to add it to a lot of things though along with yogurt#already put beans in everything but now I'm trying to keep chickpeas and tofu constantly available too#too soon to say it's helping a lot especially cause I've had other variables atound my health lately but#seems probable I should have been doing this way sooner but I only found out because I researched after hearing someone say#that you should get protein immediately after waking up

â So you want to learn pixel art? â
đš Part 1 of ??? - The Basics!
Hello, my name is Tofu and I'm a professional pixel artist. I have been supporting myself with freelance pixel art since 2020, when I was let go from my job during the pandemic.
My progress, from 2017 to 2024. IMO the only thing that really matters is time and effort, not some kind of natural talent for art.
This guide will not be comprehensive, as nobody should be expected to read allat. Instead I will lean heavily on my own experience, and share what worked for me, so take everything with a grain of salt. This is a guide, not a tutorial. Cheers!
đš Do I need money?
NO!!! Pixel art is one of the most accessible mediums out there.
I still use a mouse because I prefer it to a tablet! You won't be at any disadvantage here if you can't afford the best hardware or software.
Because our canvases are typically very small, you don't need a good PC to run a good brush engine or anything like that.
â¨Did you know? One of the most skilled and beloved pixel artists uses MS PAINT! Wow!!
đš What software should I use?
Here are some of the most popular programs I see my friends and peers using. Stars show how much I recommend the software for beginners! â
đ° Paid options:
âââ Aseprite (for PC) - $19.99
This is what I and many other pixel artists use. You may find when applying to jobs that they require some knowledge of Aseprite. Since it has become so popular, companies like that you can swap raw files between artists.
Aseprite is amazingly customizable, with custom skins, scripts and extensions on Itch.io, both free and paid.
If you have ever used any art software before, it has most of the same features and should feel fairly familiar to use. It features a robust animation suite and a tilemap feature, which have saved me thousands of hours of labour in my work. The software is also being updated all the time, and the developers listen to the users. I really recommend Aseprite!
â Photoshop (for PC) - Monthly $$
A decent option for those who already are used to the PS interface. Requires some setup to get it ready for pixel-perfect art, but there are plenty of tutorials for doing so.
Animation is also much more tedious on PS which you may want to consider before investing time!
ââ ProMotion NG (for PC) - $19.00
An advanced and powerful software which has many features Aseprite does not, including Colour Cycling and animated tiles.
âââ Pixquare (for iOS) - $7.99 - $19.99 (30% off with code 'tofu'!!)
Probably the best app available for iPad users, in active development, with new features added all the time.
Look! My buddy Jon recommends it highly, and uses it often.
One cool thing about Pixquare is that it takes Aseprite raw files! Many of my friends use it to work on the same project, both in their office and on the go.
â Procreate (for iOS) - $12.99
If you have access to Procreate already, it's a decent option to get used to doing pixel art. It does however require some setup. Artist Pixebo is famously using Procreate, and they have tutorials of their own if you want to learn.
ââ ReSprite iOS and Android. (free trial, but:) $19.99 premium or $$ monthly
ReSprite is VERY similar in terms of UI to Aseprite, so I can recommend it. They just launched their Android release!
đ Free options:
âââ Libresprite (for PC)
Libresprite is an alternative to Aseprite. It is very, very similar, to the point where documentation for Aseprite will be helpful to Libresprite users.
ââ Pixilart (for PC and mobile)
A free in-browser app, and also a mobile app! It is tied to the website Pixilart, where artists upload and share their work. A good option for those also looking to get involved in a community.
ââ Dotpict (for mobile)
Dotpict is similar to Pixilart, with a mobile app tied to a website, but it's a Japanese service. Did you know that in Japanese, pixel art is called 'Dot Art'? Dotpict can be a great way to connect with a different community of pixel artists! They also have prompts and challenges often.
đš So I got my software, now what?
â˝Nice! Now it's time for the basics of pixel art.
â WAIT â Before this section, I want to add a little disclaimer. All of these rules/guidelines can be broken at will, and some 'no-nos' can look amazing when done intentionally.
The pixel-art fundamentals can be exceedingly helpful to new artists, who may feel lost or overwhelmed by choice. But if you feel they restrict you too harshly, don't force yourself! At the end of the day it's your art, and you shouldn't try to contort yourself into what people think a pixel artist 'should be'. What matters is your own artistic expression. đđ
â˝Phew! With that out of the way...
đ¸"The Rules"
There are few hard 'rules' of pixel art, mostly about scaling and exporting. Some of these things will frequently trip up newbies if they aren't aware, and are easy to overlook.
đšScaling method
There are a couple ways of scaling your art. The default in most art programs, and the entire internet, is Bi-linear scaling, which usually works out fine for most purposes. But as pixel artists, we need a different method.
Both are scaled up x10. See the difference?
On the left is scaled using Bilinear, and on the right is using Nearest-Neighbor. We love seeing those pixels stay crisp and clean, so we use nearest-neighbor.Â
(Most pixel-art programs have nearest-neighbor enabled by default! So this may not apply to you, but it's important to know.)
đšMixels
Mixels are when there are different (mixed) pixel sizes in the same image.
Here I have scaled up my art- the left is 200%, and the right is 150%. Yuck!
As we can see, the "pixel" sizes end up different. We generally try to scale our work by multiples of 100 - 200%, 300% etc. rather than 150%. At larger scales however, the minute differences in pixel sizes are hardly noticeable!
Mixels are also sometimes seen when an artist scales up their work, then continues drawing on it with a 1 pixel brush.
Many would say that this is not great looking! This type of pixels can be indicative of a beginner artist. But there are plenty of creative pixel artists out there who mixels intentionally, making something modern and cool.
đšSaving Your Files
We usually save our still images as .PNGs as they donât create any JPEG artifacts or loss of quality. It's a little hard to see here, but there are some artifacts, and it looks a little blurry. It also makes the art very hard to work with if we are importing a JPEG.
For animations .GIF is good, but be careful of the 256 colour limit. Try to avoid using too many blending mode layers or gradients when working with animations. If you arenât careful, your animation could flash afterwards, as the .GIF tries to reduce colours wherever it can. It doesnât look great!
Here's an old piece from 2021 where I experienced .GIF lossiness, because I used gradients and transparency, resulting in way too many colours.
đšPixel Art Fundamentals - Techniques and Jargon
ââConfused about Jaggies? Anti-Aliasing? Banding? Dithering? THIS THREAD is for youââ << it's a link, click it!!
As far as I'm concerned, this is THE tutorial of all time for understanding pixel art. These are techniques created and named by the community of people who actually put the list together, some of the best pixel artists alive currently. Please read it!!
đ¸How To Learn
Okay, so you have your software, and you're all ready to start. But maybe you need some more guidance? Try these tutorials and resources! It can be helpful to work along with a tutorial until you build your confidence up.
ââ Pixel Logic (A Digital Book) - $10 A very comprehensive visual guide book by a very skilled and established artist in the industry. I own a copy myself.
âââ StudioMiniBoss - free A collection of visual tutorials, by the artist that worked on Celeste! When starting out, if I got stuck, I would go and scour his tutorials and see how he did it.
â Lospec Tutorials - free A very large collection of various tutorials from all over the internet. There is a lot to sift through here if you have the time.
âââ Cyangmou's Tutorials - free (tipping optional) Cyangmou is one of the most respected and accomplished modern pixel artists, and he has amassed a HUGE collection of free and incredibly well-educated visual tutorials. He also hosts an educational stream every week on Twitch called 'pixelart for beginners'.
âââ Youtube Tutorials - free There are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on YouTube, but it can be tricky to find the good ones. My personal recommendations are MortMort, Brandon, and AdamCYounis- these guys really know what they're talking about!
đ¸ How to choose a canvas size
When looking at pixel art turorials, we may see people suggest things like 16x16, 32x32 and 64x64. These are standard sizes for pixel art games with tiles. However, if you're just making a drawing, you don't necessarily need to use a standard canvas size like that.
What I like to think about when choosing a canvas size for my illustrations is 'what features do I think it is important to represent?' And make my canvas as small as possible, while still leaving room for my most important elements.
Imagine I have characters in a scene like this:
I made my canvas as small as possible (232 x 314), but just big enough to represent the features and have them be recognizable (it's Good Omens fanart đ¤)!! If I had made it any bigger, I would be working on it for ever, due to how much more foliage I would have to render.
If you want to do an illustration and you're not sure, just start at somewhere around 100x100 - 200x200 and go from there.
It's perfectly okay to crop your canvas, or scale it up, or crunch your art down at any point if you think you need a different size. I do it all the time! It only takes a bit of cleanup to get you back to where you were.
đ¸Where To Post
Outside of just regular socials, Twitter, Tumblr, Deviantart, Instagram etc, there are a few places that lean more towards pixel art that you might not have heard of.
â Lospec Lospec is a low-res focused art website. Some pieces get given a 'monthly masterpiece' award. Not incredibly active, but I believe there are more features being added often.
ââ Pixilart Pixilart is a very popular pixel art community, with an app tied to it. The community tends to lean on the young side, so this is a low-pressure place to post with an relaxed vibe.
ââ Pixeljoint Pixeljoint is one of the big, old-school pixel art websites. You can only upload your art unscaled (1x) because there is a built-in zoom viewer. It has a bit of a reputation for being elitist (back in the 00s it was), but in my experience it's not like that any more. This is a fine place for a pixel artist to post if they are really interested in learning, and the history. The Hall of Fame has some of the most famous / impressive pixel art pieces that paved the way for the work we are doing today.
âââ Cafe Dot Cafe Dot is my art server so I'm a little biased here. đľ It was created during the recent social media turbulence. We wanted a place to post art with no algorithms, and no NFT or AI chuds. We have a heavy no-self-promotion rule, and are more interested in community than skill or exclusivity. The other thing is that we have some kind of verification system- you must apply to be a Creator before you can post in the Art feed, or use voice. This helps combat the people who just want to self-promo and dip, or cause trouble, as well as weed out AI/NFT people. Until then, you are still welcome to post in any of the threads or channels. There is a lot to do in Cafe Dot. I host events weekly, so check the threads!
ââ/r/pixelart The pixel art subreddit is pretty active! I've also heard some of my friends found work through posting here, so it's worth a try if you're looking. However, it is still Reddit- so if you're sensitive to rude people, or criticism you didn't ask for, you may want to avoid this one. Lol
đ¸ Where To Find Work
You need money? I got you! As someone who mostly gets scouted on social media, I can share a few tips with you:
Put your email / portfolio in your bio Recruiters don't have all that much time to find artists, make it as easy as possible for someone to find your important information!
Clean up your profile If your profile feed is all full of memes, most people will just tab out rather than sift through. Doesn't apply as much to Tumblr if you have an art tag people can look at.
Post regularly, and repost Activity beats everything in the social media game. It's like rolling the dice, and the more you post the more chances you have. You have to have no shame, it's all business baby
Outside of just posting regularly and hoping people reach out to you, it can be hard to know where to look. Here are a few places you can sign up to and post around on.
/r/INAT INAT (I Need A Team) is a subreddit for finding a team to work with. You can post your portfolio here, or browse for people who need artists.
/r/GameDevClassifieds Same as above, but specifically for game-related projects.
Remote Game Jobs / Work With Indies Like Indeed but for game jobs. Browse them often, or get email notifications.
VGen VGen is a website specifically for commissions. You need a code from another verified artist before you can upgrade your account and sell, so ask around on social media or ask your friends. Once your account is upgraded, you can make a 'menu' of services people can purchase, and they send you an offer which you are able to accept, decline, or counter.
The evil websites of doom: Fiverr and Upwork I don't recommend them!! They take a big cut of your profit, and the sites are teeming with NFT and AI people hoping to make a quick buck. The site is also extremely oversaturated and competitive, resulting in a race to the bottom (the cheapest, the fastest, doing the most for the least). Imagine the kind of clients who go to these websites, looking for the cheapest option. But if you're really desperate...
đ¸ Community
I do really recommend getting involved in a community. Finding like-minded friends can help you stay motivated to keep drawing. One day, those friends you met when you were just starting out may become your peers in the industry. Making friends is a game changer!
Discord servers Nowadays, the forums of old are mostly abandoned, and people split off into many different servers. Cafe Dot, Pixel Art Discord (PAD), and if you can stomach scrolling past all the AI slop, you can browse Discord servers here.
Twitch Streams Twitch has kind of a bad reputation for being home to some of the more edgy gamers online, but the pixel art community is extremely welcoming and inclusive. Some of the people I met on Twitch are my friends to this day, and we've even worked together on different projects! Browse pixel art streams here, or follow some I recommend: NickWoz, JDZombi, CupOhJoe, GrayLure, LumpyTouch, FrankiePixelShow, MortMort, Sodor, NateyCakes, NyuraKim, ShinySeabass, I could go on for ever really... There are a lot of good eggs on Pixel Art Twitch.
đ¸ Other Helpful Websites
Palettes Lospec has a huge collection of user-made palettes, for any artist who has trouble choosing their colours, or just wants to try something fun. Rejected Palettes is full of palettes that didn't quite make it onto Lospec, ran by people who believe there are no bad colours.
The Spriters Resource TSR is an incredible website where users can upload spritesheets and tilesets from games. You can browse for your favourite childhood game, and see how they made it! This website has helped me so much in understanding how game assets come together in a scene.
VGMaps Similar to the above, except there are entire maps laid out how they would be played. This is incredible if you have to do level design, or for mocking up a scene for fun.
Game UI Database Not pixel-art specific, but UI is a very challenging part of graphics, so this site can be a game-changer for finding good references!
Retronator A digital newspaper for pixel-art lovers! New game releases, tutorials, and artworks!
Itch.io A website where people can upload, games, assets, tools... An amazing hub for game devs and game fans alike. A few of my favourite tools: Tiled, PICO-8, Pixel Composer, Juice FX, Magic Pencil for Aseprite
đ¸ The End?
This is just part 1 for now, so please drop me a follow to see any more guides I release in the future. I plan on doing some writeups on how I choose colours, how to practise, and more!
I'm not an expert by any means, but everything I did to get to where I am is outlined in this guide. Pixel art is my passion, my job and my hobby! I want pixel art to be recognized everywhere as an art-form, a medium of its own outside of game-art or computer graphics!
This guide took me a long time, and took a lot of research and experience. Consider following me or supporting me if you are feeling generous.
And good luck to all the fledgling pixel artists, I hope you'll continue and have fun. I hope my guide helped you, and don't hesitate to send me an ask if you have any questions! đ

hate when it's less about "what would taste good rn?" and more about "not feeling like eating at all but there's lots of perishables and I gotta decide which will give me the least amount of nausea"
#would this count as an ed or is that just another occasional symptom of my mind being very very sick?#oh well... guess i'll fry up some tofu. needs to go asap before it spoils...#is2g if it weren't for the fresh fruit and veg that attract mold and rot like moths to light i probably wouldn't have eaten anything today#NOT HEALTHY I KNOWWWW#but i really do not care for any kind of food at the moment and it's both a blessing and a curse#gives my chronically upset stomach and intestines a much needed break#but also MY BODY IS MISSING VITAL FUEL AND FOOD NEEDS TO BE EATEN BEFORE IT SPOILS OR ELSE MY PARENTS WILL BE MAD#don't wanna be wasteful... we're not exactly rich after all...#augh... food and eating.. difficult...#vent

Well. Apparently I was much more stressed about the election than I thought because I watched this and started crying.
I forgot what it was like to have actual charismatic politicians campaign. I know we talk a lot about parasocial relationships with them, but one of the things successful leaders do is inspire their people.
We have not had much to be inspired about. Biden is the unflavored tofu of the political world. I was going to do my duty, but nothing beyond that.
Watching other people be hype about her? So hype a majority of the people on ActBlue are first time donors? That 40K Zoom call? (They held another one for Black men and there were 20K on that.)
That fucking means something.
She doesn't have it in the bag (and honestly I'll be anxious until it's over), but I feel like we have a much better chance than before Biden bowed out.
In a lot of liberal/leftist circles there is this unspoken expectation that Black women will do the work because it is necessary but backbreaking. And sometimes I think non-Black people understand and are grateful. But also a lot don't and aren't.
With that in mind, I am absolutely serious when I say I think Kamala Harris might prevent the US from falling to fascism.

For any followers of mine still living with parents, guardians, family, or even just with roommates and who've never lived alone and/or fully on your own terms (whether ye be 16 or 60), I have TWO pieces of wisdom for you for when you eventually do:
You WILL discover that you were wrong about some shit you felt pretty strongly about before. Maybe you never realized how often your mom ACTUALLY cleans the bathroom and it turns out she asked for help really rarely. Maybe, much as it grates to admit, putting $50 into a different savings account every paycheck really IS the ONLY way to save any fucking money. Maybe that big rolling trashcan you resented your roommate putting in the kitchen, and got in that big fight about, really WAS super convenient and now you have to buy one for yourself after they move out and take it with them. Maybe blanching vegetables so they retain their color when cooked actually DOES enhance a meal, pretty food slaps actually, and the reason you didn't think it was worth the effort is because you were depressed.
You WILL also discover new shit that works SO much better for you than everything you'd been taught. Maybe you'll discover that dropping trash off at a recycling center at your convenience works way better for your brain than getting it picked up on a set day. Maybe you'll realize you don't actually hate tofu, you just hate how your family cooks tofu. Maybe you'll love being able to walk around the house naked whenever you want. Maybe you'll find you thrive in a space with giant framed nude photography, or taxidermy animals, or fandom themed Everything. Maybe you'll realize that keeping the thermostat set like 5 degrees colder (or hotter) than is typical makes you sleep better than you ever have before in your whole life.
The point of this wisdom is: Stay humble, but also, stay excited. There's no point pretending you weren't wrong about shit you were wrong about, just eat the crow and move on. But also, there's so much to look forward to about your own space-- even more than you could ever imagine when you don't have it yet.
#my posts#my thoughts#idk what to tag this#adulting#i guess#hope#?#most of these aren't me specific but the recycling center and blanching food definitely are

Bruce looks like the kind of parents who will hear the children say that they like some food and automatically accept it as the children's favorite meal
And the children will just eat it forever now to make Bruce happy
What food/snacks/fruit they accidentally say "oh this taste good actually" and now are they cursed by it?
Waitress: And what would you like as your side?
8-year-old Dick: French fries!
[19 years later]
Bruce: And here's your dinner, side of fries as always.
Dick, who's been eating fries every day since: Yippee.
âââââââ
12-year-old Jason: *looks at a candy bar*
Bruce: You want it?
Jason: I dunno, it's like three dollars.
Bruce: Hey, don't worry about it, chum.
[11 years later]
Jason: *finds the same candy bar in his belt*
Jason: Well, it's the thought that counts.
âââââââ
14-year-old Tim: Since Alfred's not home I ordered pizza for dinner.
Bruce, working: *grunts*
[3 years later]
*doorbell rings*
Tim: Weird, I wasn't expecting anyone.
Tim: *opens the door*
Bruce, in a Bat-pizza uniform: Delivery for Tim Drake.
âââââââ
15-year-old Steph: *makes waffles*
[3 years later]
Steph: Bruce, why'd you buy so much flour?
Bruce: So you can make waffles.
âââââââ
Bruce: You hungry?
Duke: I dunno, I guess I could go for a smoothie or something.
[later]
Duke: What's with the second fridge?
Bruce: To keep your smoothies.
âââââââ
Damian: From now on, I am a vegetarian.
Bruce: Okay, but what about protein?
Damian: There are plenty of options, like tofu.
[later]
Damian, faced with a tofu truck: Perhaps I should have listened to Brown's advice.
âââââââ
Bruce: *driving*
Cass: *points to a pumpkin patch*
Bruce: We'll see.
[later]
Cass: *goes to her room*
Cass: Dad?
Bruce: Yes, princess?
Cass: Pumpkin patch. In my room.
Bruce: I called in a favor from Ivy.
