Ya know, it's one thing to learn a song in my native language. Super easy, unless the song crazy hard or something.
Trying to learn a song in a language I know almost nothing about is something else entirely.
#This is going to take me ages#But the song is so beautiful#And is of a very nice difficulty#Yeah I know /nothing/ about French#I don't even really like the language#But the melody isn't difficult and sits nicely in my range#So come hell or high water I /will/ learn it#bri rambles#Music talk

Different Italian anon, but the thing with Tuscan C is that it's pronounced like a very strong H sound, which is extra weird cuz the letter H makes no sound in Italian, normally. It sounds the way Spanish pronounce the J. We say it's "aspirato". So then people from there will say things like Hoha Hola (coca cola), and it's funny. It's also extremely contagious, I got family in Florence, you spend 3 days with them you start doing it too before you even realize.
.
#that sounds really endearing actually#answered#anonymous#this is entirely beside the point but I still feel sort of bamboozled by languages that have silent letters#or when letters have multiple pronunciations that vary wildly from word to word#and when the sound and the letter don't seem to match like how J sounds very close to H in Spanish like you mentioned#I'm generalizing a little but none of these are really a thing in Finnish#in Finnish words are pretty much always pronounced the way they are written if that makes sense#I don't know the language terminology but I think phonetic spelling is what you call it#each letter represents a specific sound and you string those together#when you hear a word you can always tell how it's written and when you read a word you know how to pronounce it#even if you're encountering the word for the first time and have no idea what it means#it's comparatively direct and predictable there's practically no need for guessing or memorizing#also the stress is always on the first syllabe and it's so subtle it might as well not be there at all#which sometimes makes spoken Finnish and Finnish accent sound kind of monotonous there isn't a lot of intonation#I was extremely confused by the concept of spelling bees as a kid#anyway long tag ramble but this stuff is just interesting to me

I have been thinking about this video nonstop since I first saw it on Instagram. I hope everybody has a very happy tuchus!
[Video ID: A Jewish woman (Rabbi Yael Buechler, @midrashmanicures on Instagram) speaks to the camera: We have reached a new low in holiday product fails. This treat box is for Sukkot. It's featured on Amazon and Sukkot is a holiday that doesn't get a lot of love so kudos for having a product for Sukkot. It says Happy Sukkot and in the Hebrew it says--wait for it--tuchus! Happy tuchus! Tuchus is Sukkot spelled backwards. The product clearly wasn't vetted in the Hebrew. This other treat box just says Tuchus. I'm thinking we should create some sort of governing body that "certifies" Jewish holiday products as being "kosher" because this is a new low. Anyway I want to wish you all a very happy Tuchus." The first box she shows is pale green decorated with images of apples, pomegranates, and branches and the words "happy sukkot" and תוכוס. The second treat box is pale orange with a similar motif and the word תוכוס. End ID]
#Sukkot#tuchus#Hebrew#language fails#Hebrew fails#Yiddish#Jewish#Judaism#Jewish things#video#Instagram#happy tuchus#in case anyone was wondering that is NOT the actual spelling for tuchus in Yiddish BUT it does in fact phonetically spell out tuchus#I really don't understand how people keep winding up writing these things backwards#because if you look it up...shouldn't it be written correctly? and shouldn't you then write the letters as you see them in your source?#like. even if you physically write it left->right shouldn't you still be writing the letters in the right places?#she has a couple of other product fails videos including one for a pop-up sukkah that says (in Hebrew) 'Hanukkah happy' (שמח חנוכה) on it#maybe I'll post that one too idk#midrashmanicures#Rabbi Yael Buechler

i have no idea if this is going to make any sense but. as an enochian speaking sam truther. if sam only ever learned most of the enochian he knows from lucifer in the cage. and that's just because he was forced to spend so much time with him and he was never really aiming to learn enochian himself. do you think that him working on improving his sign language for eileen is a deeply personal thing to him. like he loves her so much and this time he is learning someone elses language not out of necessity but out of love commitment and devotion. sam choosing to learn someone elses language this time around because he loves them after years spent learning enochian through lucifer just feels so... intimate and loving to me. do you hear me. do you guys understand what i'm saying. i'm ill.
#spn#sam winchester#eileen leahy#saileen#supernatural#i don't really even have that many thoughts about saileen but this. this hit#like him learning sign language for her with this perspective becomes so intimate and healing#yeah#are you guys seeing my vision

#why do you need this many legs sir#toedscruel#woah holy shit i just looked outside and it's super dark out. i'm queuing this up at noon why is it so dark#lemme look#yeah it's. dark. there's a bunch of dark evil clouds in the sky lookin like it's gonna storm oh i just heard thunder yeah it's gonna storm#uh oh. good thing i'm queueing this guy up before the storm so my power doesn't go out. this happens frequently#anyway toedscruel. it's definitely an evolution of toedscool. it definitely looks like tentacruel#if it's a different pokémon why does it evolve into something so suspiciously similar. i can understand wigglet and wugtrio being#different pokémon. just based on how different they are from diglett and dugtrio. even though their names are a typo away#but this guy is. it. really should've just been a regional form‚ i think#unrelated‚ but on random occasions seemingly whenever someone new finds the blog and reads my tags#i'll occasionally get folks asking me how i type commas in the tags#the answer is that this character → ‚ ← is not a comma. it just looks identical to a comma because of tumblr's font#it's actually a lower quotation mark. so for a language that does ‚this kind’ of quotation marks#and i use it as a comma because i have a fancy linguist keyboard that can type all kinds of fancy symbols. and it's easily accessible#some of my favorites include the single-character ellipse: …#the degrees symbol: º and °#small A: ª#fractions: 1⁄2 2⁄3 1⁄4 etc#and obviously IPA symbols and various diacritics‚ so that i can type the word pokémon without having to copy-and-paste the E#currency symbols‚ too. £¢$§¥ euro is on here somewhere but i don't know where bc i don't use that one really#i just like being able to type things the way they're supposed to be. like it's 80º outside. the stopwatch costs 15¢ in the shop#and‚ of course‚ pokémon. it's the linguistics and computer 'tism combining together i think#it's storming harder now but i found the euro symbol: €#oh fuckin hell my lights just flickered. this is gonna be rough..!

happy bisexual day to those who celebrate
#dragalia lost#dragalia#orion#orion dragalia#I don't usually cross reference JP translations for Dragalia stuff but I was curious if some of the Really Gay Lines in English were#the same in the original text. Turns out some of them weren't#which just makes the localization funnier#Like. Grain of salt because I don't speak Japanese and rely on machine translations and friends who speak the language#But the really sus “receiving end” line was originally just. “Haha it'd be nice to be the one getting escorted for once :)”#I'm sure it's not an entirely indulgent translation but. Phrasing!!!#then there's the infamous(?) “I seek to have a relationship with everyone here!” where in JP it's clearer that by “everyone”#Orion means “every woman” and not literally “everyone”#bc JP Elly says “In your case won't just any woman do?” while in EN she just calls him shameless LOL#there's a few more#like the scene where Orion says “You're the first man I've ever wanted to protect” and Euden says “damn bro I thought you weren't gay?”#and he responds calmly like “You really are slow when it comes to these matters! I'm just saying you're more charming than you know.”#it's a letdown but it's kinda coy#meanwhile since JP has some extra animations#namely Orion jumping in shock and making a cringing face before responding#the No Homo vibe is off the charts 😭😭😭#and then theres that xmas seasonal line that's about picking up women ...when voices are set to JP.#The EN line is about being broke. For some reason.#But even with all that it's not like there's no gay subtext in JP Orion's dialogue. It's just deeply funny how the EN localizers went#Yup. This one. Bisexual. We gotta make it more obvious.

Everything about Style is just driving me feral with want to have THK right now, immediately.
The way he's all big, bold gestures and confident swagger; the way his introduction includes a literal arms-wide-open welcome. The overalls unbuttoned until nearly the middle of his chest and how he's the only one in the main cast to be (literally) this uncovered (everyone else has 2-3 layers on).
I wonder if this hints to how vulnerable his character is, narratively speaking: how he potentially is the one that starts out with the least information (apparently Kant doesn't tell him who Fadel and Bison are when he makes that deal with Style?); how he may be the least physically familiar with violence because he's just a mechanic (vs Kant's background with crime/the police. Also the way in the trailer Style is constantly in shock when Fadel does something violent around him); how he chooses with his heart even after he finds out the full truth about Fadel ("You know I know everything").
When he describes his life, it's so... innocent? We get a snapshot of what he thinks his life is about and it's: fixing cars, collecting vintage cars, bowling and hanging out with his best friend. Every other character's answers are layers of subterfuge and double meanings but Style's answers create such a contrast by being so unfiltered. This is a character that (at least at this point) is guileless and without agenda.
I'm so excited to see Style pursing Fadel. I'm so excited to see Fadel try to remain stoic and unmoved in the face of Style's unabashed interest and enthusiastic flirting. I'm excited to discover why Style goes from attraction to being willing to risk it all for Fadel.
But also -- in a very different way than what Kant will doubtless be to Bison -- I'm excited to see how Style will become an escape for Fadel. Fadel, who just wants to sleep for 25 hours (he's so exhausted) and live a normal life, maybe open a restaurant that isn't just a front and a cover for the illicit job he maybe no longer wants, who enjoys solitude but wants to find someone to spend it with (he sounds so desperately lonely, my heart breaks for him).
Someone uncomplicated, who lives life fully, who isn't afraid to go for what he wants and who wears his heart on his sleeve.
In less than 5 minutes, this interview shows us the ways they could fit together like missing puzzle pieces, and I am so, so excited to see it fall apart and come together.
#the heart killers#style#fadel#fadelstyle#also can we talk about how well both joong and dunk embody their characters??#dunk doesn't normally SIT this way when he's in interviews#he's much more relaxed and calm overall and doesn't use as much inflections unless he gets really excited#but all his mannerisms feel in character (or at least true to the Style we see in the trailer)#joong too -- the way he slouches and the almost disinterested air he's projecting#like Fadel doesn't really want to be doing this interview (bc ofc he wouldn't)#the way he keeps defaulting back to linking his hands together like he's got something to hide#his body language is so defensive and all his answers look like they're extremely calculated and thought through#joong is rarely this still in a real interview so this feels very distinctly like a character choice#joongdunk#joong archen#dunk natachai#and even if i wind up being horribly wrong about all of this i'm still so grateful for what we got already and what we will get in THK#as long as they don't end broken up although thats what fanfics are for so even that wouldn't be the end of the world to me xD#also someone please yell with me about how pretty the tiny bit of eyeshadow they added to dunk's eyes makes him look AHHHHH#thk interviews#style meta#thk meta#<my posts>

Subtitles below the keep reading:
Hey you, shut your mouth and look at my paw! DON'T FORGET!! [Incomprehensible sped up gibberish] This... Journey... Money... Loads of coins. [Incomprehensible sped up gibberish] What-about-her? What-about-her? ... What-about-her? 'She still like me? [Quiet but mostly incomprehensible gibberish about subtitles] O P S O P N O-1 1. Here's the spell: Love the mermaid, for sure! The mermaid is HAPPY! Okay! It's pretty normal for a fish, right? Guuuyyyssss, beeeee caaarefuuulll wiiiiith theeee GIIIIIRRRRLSSS!!! [Incomprehensible] Oh! Silly! Oh yes! Lamb chop boy! [Incomprehensible] [Very quietly, while white noise is playing over it] Goood eevening, aand weeelcome too the shoooowww... [In the background] Ohhh, mooney!
#video#elevenlabs#i generated three versions of this video and basically spliced together the best parts from each one into one thing#and also toned down the flashing of the red and white pound signs to be a lot slower#i'm honestly surprised how well everything spliced together. i was expecting it to be even a little bit noticeable but. nope apparently not#i did a few generations of meet the spy's intro and tried to splice together the best bits but theres just so much happening with the audio#there's a lot of funny portions of that audio. maybe i'll try again at it and see if i cant get the parts i like in one thing#truthfully i also don't know how much folks'll like these. as in compared to around the time the infomaniac stuff was made#so i'm not sure how much of these i'll be putting together and uploading. mostly just been fucking around and showing my friends#i'm mostly just intrigued to hear what the ai tries to say with some of these generations#since it's just trying to translate from one language to another#in this case. providing videos in english. and setting the translation from russian to english.#which seems to be the best thing so far (that i've tried) that causes more of the words being said to be off-script#like it'll usually most be like whats originally being said mostly but other times it's completely different from the source#i think this dub shows it best. between ''hey you. shut your mouth and look at my paw!'' and ''love the mermaid. the mermaid is happy!!''#i am also officially out of characters to generate more so i won't really be doing more than what i've already done for a while#i wanted to try and give it a video that plays backwards. flip that. then let it dub over it forwards.#but i'd have to wait until i get the character limit reset

I laugh every time someone says Penelope is more of a feminist who understands women's rights more than Eloise simply because she's LW because, be so for real right now, that is such a lie. Like Eloise has her moments and her feminism is very yte and privileged, but at least she takes the time to actually consider from other's perspective, even if she's rude here and there, and appears to make attempts to grow as a character (when the narrative allows her to rather than picking favorites). Penelope exposing secrets and being feared by most of the Ton, especially the women and young girls, for the amount of power she has does not scream feminist to me but go off.
#bridgerton#eloise bridgerton#anti penelope featherington#tbh both of their views of feminism sucks but at least eloise shows potential for growth and won't out you to society for a cash grab#pen does have room the grow but the show does not allow for her to do so so all her successes feel so lackluster#some are quick to call her a feminist just because of few lines that pulled heart strings but will brush under the rug how she nearly set up#daphne to be preyed upon by a nasty man and left marina nearly destitute and alone while pregnant#don't even get me started on her being abliest bc abliesm =/= feminism#same thing with using language that borders racial microaggressions (*cough* kate and simon *cough*)#like you can like pen all you want but i don't think she's really a feminist#and that would be okay bc not every female character has to be had some in the fandom not kept trying to say otherwise

the thing that gets me whenever i hear about finnish is hearing that spoken and written finnish is "different". Like when I first heard about this i was like "Yeah duh as it is with literally every language to ever exist" but it turns out it's like ..... DIFFERENT different????? how does that work. what happens if I go to finland and transcript something spoken as is. will they take me out back and shoot me
#gu6chan's musings#it sounds fun don't get me wrong but the more i learn about that fuckass language the more cursed it gets#like 'oh yeah finnish isn't actually scandavian its like estonian and hungarian' oh really??? what a neat little fun fact! how surprising#'spoken finnish is like russian in that you can kinda do whatever with the sentence structure and have it make sense' huh#'btw it's a whole other ballpark next to WRITTEN finnish' HUH??????#AND THEN THE CONJUGATIONS????? like holy SHIT CHILL#mad respect to them bc it's a very nice language to listen to but I don't think I'd be able to even dip my toe in it 😭 it scares me ...#what other cursed little features about this language would I come to learn IF i were to attempt taking it on though; i wonder...

I love the shape language for Machete and Vasco, how angular and pointy the former is VS how round and soft the other... It's so GOOD I adore that
Thank you! I like the contrast as well, it makes them very fun to draw together. I try to keep them visually distinct while still making sure that they look harmonious and complementary next to each other.
#some more design musings that I've noticed that don't really matter but I tend to think about when drawing them:#Machete's shapes have an upward direction the ears the neck fluff and even the tip of his snout has that upturned angle#while Vasco's vibe is more loose and relaxed his huge floppy ears almost make him look like he's melting#neither of them have strong markings but the positioning of the gradients they have is very similar it's just different colors#Vasco has dark almond eyes (with what I can only describe as disney eyelashes)#his irises appear nearly black but if you shone a strong light directly on them they'd reveal a honey/amber hue#Machete's eyes are big and prominent with disproportionally small pupils#lately I've been drawing him with just the faintest salmon colored irises#but if the color scheme of the piece calls for it they can be depicted more vividly red#Machete has longer untameable fur here and there while Vasco is uniformly smooth and velvety#Machete is supposed to be the serious and inhibited half of the two but his face has a lot more expressive potential than Vasco's#it's actually kind of a struggle that I can't make Vasco emote with his ears at all those are typically a huge advantage in furry art#Vasco's body language is open and casual he takes up space confidently#Machete is usually very closed and defensive he has a habit of crossing his arms and legs and keeping his hands together and close to body#in general Vasco shouldn't be wearing anything black or red and Machete can't be seen wearing blue or gold#white is neutral territory it's usually the color of sleepwear and undershirts and as a result has a more intimate tone to it#answered#ardate

After having to deal with season 1 of MAWS' squeamishness to anything with a fraction of political bite (don't talk to me about MAWS season 2 please) it's honestly really refreshing going into Young Justice season 1-2 where the writing readily doesn't flinch about getting political (even if it's imperfect). I'm not saying their representation is amazing or anything, but like that little touch where Asami Koizumi is speaking in Japanese and has an intense language barrier among her runaway crew of kids (feeling isolated culturally because of it) and then Lex comes in and just talks to her in Japanese so casually like?? Of course she'd feel comfortable in wanting to trust someone who was willing to cross that barrier. There are alien languages, there are Earth languages, and they're not afraid to show the affects it has on these characters. It makes the world feel more whole.
Like MAWS had that stupid Native Lois hologram with a feather on her head (in the League of Lois's multiverse episode) and ended on Thanksgiving anyway. Meanwhile Tye Longshadow on Young Justice feels like a more earnest step in Native representation. It doesn't have the same performative energy MAWS had.
#ramblings#jesncin watches YJa#I'm not saying the treatment of language is perfect (I don't really like Mgann's translation ability) but HEY#Lois didn't speak any language outside of english despite Kryptonese being a thing in MAWS S1#season 2 of YJa is really compelling so far even if there are some annoying plot holes. there are lots of lovable characters#MAWS wants the clout of touching politics but it's at odds with the fluffy bigotry free world they created so it collapses on itself#jesncin talks maws

I love singNsong again reminding people in Side Story that Dokja wanted other people to read TWSA (he wrote reviews and comments! It was his first wish), and he only stopped bothering because people harassed him for it. He didn't gate-keep the story. When he's avoiding talking to Sangah about it at the beginning of ORV, it's because he knows what happens when he tells people about the story, not because he's gate-keeping it from her. He notes he's not proud of his hobby (likely because he's been bullied all through his life, including for reading the thing he loves): he finds it embarrassing to talk about, and better respects her studying Spanish in her free time (learning another language is a generally accepted thing in society). He assumes she won't care or will look at him funny (or worse) for when she learns about the novel he's into.
Basically anyone writing "let's gatekeep ORV" posts because of the anime announcement or because they dislike the manhwa or some other weirdness, y'all are the villains in the scenario.
The literal climax of the story is about sharing ORV with as many people as possible. What story were y'all reading?
#orv#really tired of the stupid gate-keepy bs in some parts of this fandom#omniscient reader's viewpoint#kim dokja#side story spoilers#it's been quite fascinating seeing novel fanatics come out of the woodwork against potential anime fans#while showing how much they hate the manhwa and manhwa fans too#the only actual official English translation we have is the manhwa#acting like we're all in this together like no#I adore the novel and the manhwa#and folks who started with the manhwa or just happen to also like the manhwa but also like the novel see you for what you are#avoiding talking about something is not gatekeeping#it's often recognizing various social cues#like oh this person probably isn't familiar and I don't care to explain#or I'm worried they'll treat me badly if they know#when you're trying to connect with someone you tend to look for things you share not stuff you don't#if Dokja heard about people trying to gatekeep orv he would be disgusted#also NOT gatekeeping orv is literally the climax of the story I am so deeply confused by people encouraging gatekeeping of it#you're making han suyeong mad#she didn't nearly kill herself writing orv in order to share it to everyone they could find so people could gatekeep it#that is literally the opposite of the goal#it's not bad to ask if folks have read the novel because for a variety of reasons folks may not have#but it is bad to act like reading the novel is a fandom requirement especially given all we have is a fantranslation using MTL#or you must love the novel above others or the novel only#I want singnsong to get fucking rich from this story they shared and which I and many adore#gatekeeping does not make that happen#also good luck getting people to buy the Yen Press novel translation when it comes out when you act like this#the manhwa is available in at least seven languages officially fuck off with this gatekeeping crap#don't get me started how a lot of y'all don't even know what twatf is and a good chunk of y'all who won't even touch it when you do know#and that doesn't exactly bother me but it does bug me when book purists get all high and mighty

TFP/Skulduggery Pleasant AU designs 2, another early timeline version of a character who ends up looking very different later on. The Vitakinesis info box is very short because I've written about the discipline in more detail here and here. Anyways fun fact this AU version of Ratchet is canonically from 16th century Denmark.
[Image ID: A digital drawing featuring two drawings of a Skulduggery Pleasant version of a younger Ratchet from TFP. He's drawn as a young white man with pale, freckled skin and teal eyes. His hair is ginger and slightly wavy, reaching midway down his back. He's stocky in build, the text next to him indicates that he's 1,7 meters or 5'7 feet tall. The first drawing depicts him before the 300-year war. He has one arm bent in front of him, holding a bouquet of marigolds in the crook of his elbow. His other arm is also bent, with his hand held slightly below his shoulder to his side, as if explaining something. He has his mouth open, as if talking. His outfit consists of a white undershirt, the sleeves tied close to his skin with dark brown string. On top of the shirt he has a light beige tunic, the sleeves of which are pulled up to his elbows. The hem of the tunic reaches halfway to his thighs, and is tied at the waist with a rope. The rope has been tied with a slip knot, and the tassels at the ends are dyed red, indicating that he's graduated from a Vitakinetic school. A single brown pouch has been placed to hang from the rope. His trousers are light beige, and he has boots that reach to his knees, dark brown in color. The text next to him reads "PRE-WAR/ EARLY WAR ERA. Visual age: late teens to early twenties. Actual age: Late teens to eighties." The other drawing has him during the start of the war. He has a wide, battle-ready stance, with a large scythe in his hands. His face is covered with a white mask, the eyes of which are completely black. He wears the same outfit as before, but his shirt and tunic are now covered by a second, white tunic, tied with some sort of white fabric. The sleeves are tied with brown string. The text next to him reads "EARLY PROTO-CLEAVER ERA. Visual age: early twenties. Actual age: late eighties to late 100s." The text block between the two drawings has a drawing of the rod of Asclepius above it. The text reads: "Vitakinetics generate raw life energy, which they can use to heal themselves or others. They can also use this power to put others into shock, although this takes a great physical toll on them. / End ID]
#skulduggery pleasant#transformers prime#tf prime#tfp ratchet#alternate universe#haha I sure hope marigolds don't have any sort of specific meaning in the language of flowers#also y'all already know if it's a historical story I will give at least one man really gorgeous long hair#his clothes are intentionally old-timey even for the 1500s#because the Vitakinetic school of Dublin in this story has been around since the 1100s and still use the same uniforms#so it's like if a medical school today had their students wear 17th century clothes
