Things I Don't Understand of Audiences Reaction of Nosferatu 2024

Complaints of how this is a ripoff of Dracula, and I am like, of course it is! The original 1922 film is the most famous ripoff in the history of cinema, but it is also one of the best ripoffs ever. Maybe know your history just a bit.

Why are people saying that Ellen dying was stupid or unnecessary? Firstly, that has been the ending in the 1922 and the 1979 film, this wasn't just anything Eggers pulled from nowhere. Secondly, people don't seem to understand that the Gothic genre never not one that allows it's characters to walk away unscathed, whether it is physical damage or mental damage. Blood is demanded, and hardly a truly happy ending is found, at best a bittersweet ending or at worst an ending where everyone is unhappy. I think not only is it true to the films this one is based on, but also the only satisfying ending. Ellen wouldn't have been truly happy if she had survived, because she still will be a seer, she will still have darkness looming inside, and Thomas is either incapable or unwilling to accept it. He's belief that killing Orlok will bring a reset to everything, even bringing Ellen back to how she was before, but the Ellen she was before was still suffered. He brushes aside her nightmares without comfort, he doesn't take into account how she views their marriage (when she insists that she doesn't need material things but he acts as if he knows better), and when she tries to express her suffering, he would prefer her to suppress it. She would never be truly free, but to die doing a good thing, to have control over her death the way she didn't in life, it's an empowering end, if bittersweet.

People complaining about the pace of the film, saying it starts off fine but then drags in the middle? I think the film flowed wonderfully, there was never a moment when I was thinking how much longer to the end or felt it rushed in the story. I personally cannot wait until we get the extended version, but I am happy with how it came out.

Where are people getting "Orlok groomed Ellen" from? Grooming is when someone goes after a minor and gets them to be emotionally attached to them for a long period of time in order to achieve some sort of goal (often times sex). People have been saying Ellen was a "literal child", but we don't know that for certain. Yes, Ellen described herself as a child, but it seems that the term child is used more as a synonym of "inexperienced" or "young". Also, we are not sure how old any of these characters are. If we were to go by actors ages as guidelines, Lily-Rose Depp was 24 when filming this, and all we get in between the first scene to the present day is merely "years later". That can mean two years or ten, we cannot be sure. And while Lil-Rose Depp can look younger than her age, no one better try and say she was playing a 12 year old or whatever in that first scene, because there is no way you can convince me she is as young as that. Also, Ellen hadn't been emotionally attached to Orlok between the years to make it grooming. I can make a better argument of grooming in another famous Gothic movie the 2004 "Phantom of the Opera" then I could with "Nosferatu".

Listen, this movie won't be for everyone, that is fine, but what I have an issue with is saying people are dumb or evil for thinking Ellen x Orlok is interesting/has romantic elements to it. One person commented on another's post about saying that the cast are dumb for seeing this as a love triangle, especially Lily-Rose Depp for not seeing Ellen as a victim. The director, who also wrote it, wanted this version to play up the Death and the Maiden themes, that was their vision, and I don't think it's right or fair to say they are dumb because the original movie wasn't a love triangle. If we were to be really anal about it, so many pieces of media we have we wouldn't be able to enjoy because it's origins are not the same. Sorry Disney's Hunchback fans, you can't enjoy the happy ending because the original was a downer. Sorry Wicked fans, it's nothing like "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", so it shouldn't be enjoyed. See how ridiculous it sounds? You can debate if whether or not they managed to achieve their goal, but you can't deny that was the intention and say people are dumb for picking up what they had intended.

I also feel that it's quite hypocritical of people to say that the relationship between Orlok and Ellen is evil and creepy, but then go off and say that the scenes where Friedrich has sex with Anna's corpse as "romantic" and Thomas' couch scene as "hot", when both deal with dubious/no consent at all. Just admit it, you are fine with dubious stuff so long as it's a hot guy doing it. The couch scene was quite uncomfortable for me, Ellen is clearly not in her right mind, even if not by some kind of possession, but emotionally, and it didn't sit right what Thomas did. I am not saying he raped her, but she wasn't in the right mind space to have this be a passionate moment. And he wasn't doing because of love or passion, he was doing it because he didn't like hearing Ellen say how he couldn't please her like the Count could. We had seen what they are like when they are in a good head space and the feeling mutual, as we saw in the den of the Harding's home. I feel like this scene wasn't meant to be a hot and sexy moment, but a incredibly distressing moment when two individuals are acting at their worst.

I don't understand how people feel that this film isn't a feminist film. I've seen people claim that the movie shames Ellen and that her not finding out how to stop Orlok is robbing her of her agency. Here's the thing, yes, many characters shame her for what she feels, but the narrative doesn't. As the audience, we feel sorry for her, feel bad for everything she is going through, and given the time period, of course there would be many people (mainly men) who will shame her passions or deny her darkness in favor for a more "womanly behavior". We are meant to see how the human world would never understand Ellen the way Orlok would understand her, why she would have called out a force that is inhuman, because humanity has turned her away. What's fascinating is that Ellen has control of Orlok, being able to call him, speak to him as an equal, and get him, a powerful centuries old being, to admit that she is his affliction, his weakness, and in the end, it's proven right. This mortal woman is able to defeat a supernatural being, all the while him loving her, how is that not awesome and feminist?

In regards to her finding the cure; true, in both the '22 and '79 film, Ellen figure out on her own what needs to be done to stop Orlok, but that doesn't mean '24 Ellen isn't smart or in charge of her own actions. We've seen Ellen say what the future holds multiple times, so it isn't crazy to believe that she would have seen what her fate would have been as it drew closer, and her need to talk to Von Franz read to me as her knowing the cure. When Ellen walks Von Franz to his home, she says that she knows what must be done, and they work together to make this happen, with him promising to keep Thomas away. Out of all the men, Von Franz had been the only one to take her feelings and thoughts seriously, and he does so here, including her in the plan (where Thomas had refused her to help), even giving her the chance to be stop Orlok without interruption. He isn't denying her agency, he's keeping others at bay so she can be the hero.

I like the moustache, just like a Romanian nobleman would have had, exactly what the director wanted. After leaving the theatre, my friend and I were discussing the film, and of course the design of Orlok was brought up, and she said "I liked it, especially the moustache, very Vlad the Impaler". She isn't a massive Dracula fan but she understood what was the inspiration behind it. Y'all are just uncultured swine.

In the end, I love this film, and wanted to just share my two cents.

I realized one thing about me I'm pretty straight-forward. Especially when it comes to things I like and this can come off as complaining incessantly, being too critical, being too anal, talking people down or being uncompromising.

I don't miss the humor and irony in fans of a series about biases and opinions feeling that others are too opinionated or bias when it comes to the material. I mean that's the name of the game basically.

At this point that should be the expectation on entry.

Yet, I do find it interesting that people can see this with others but to an extent not their selves. Not even just with Milgram this mindset can be applied to most social interactions.

Honestly, I get it. Everyone enjoys believing that they're reasonable and that their beliefs are sound. I like thinking I'm the smartest person in the room sometimes as well. I'm not above it. I don't want to be either.

There's a good reason that people take personal offence to their interpretations of media being questioned or dismissed. A good deal of people's beliefs, how they interpret media, and the world around them is rooted in emotionality. Regardless of how objective a person believes they're being.

For example when I talk about any of the characters my interpretation of their narratives will always be intrinsically tied with my blackness and the sort of judgment I've faced in my life due to that.

This shows itself with characters like Mu. A lot of people may not have the same experience of deviating from the normative appearance associated with their ethnicity. Many who relate to Mu or consider themselves her diehard supporters may not understand what it's like to be something but due to how you look be told that you don't count actually.

People that are biracial or double as Mu puts it in her first voice drama would. Along with people who aren't biracial and would not be considered such by any societal standard being treated the same way for being light skin.

Mu was opinionated enough to tell Es-

When they did the equivalent of calling her a halfie or half-caste by the way. Just more of that casual racism undertone Milgram has going on.

Even to the point that the translation provided even mentions the term Es used can come of as discriminatory.

Gee I wonder... I wonder why it might feel discriminatory. I can't really pinpoint a reason. Nope none coming to mind. Funnily enough this adds more depth to Mikoto's second song title being Double along with his statement trial one that made it sound like he believed he was being profiled.

Though he states it was because of his gender and clothing not due to race.

Alright, then. For an innocent person like you to end up here alongside them... Why do you think that is? Uhm... They got the wrong person. Oh? I can't imagine they'd know the details of what we look like. They mistook me for someone else in terms of gender or clothing... something along those lines. So, Milgram made a mistake, is what you're suggesting? Yeah, exactly. It's the only thing I can think of.

My point is Mu told Es how she actually wanted her biracial experience to be referred to. Not in a um actually way she just forcefully went yes I am this used a different word and probably side-eyed Es super hard internally. Like any person would.

Then there's Yuno.

Someone that everyone seems to love but love ignoring way more. Yuno is the definition of opinionated. She has no issue telling someone how things really are,

She has no problem directly contradicting others in public and questioning them further if their statements sound untrue.

22/09/02 (Yuno’s Birthday) Kazui: You're helping Shidou-kun, aren't you? Well, to put it this way, it's a bit surprising. You seemed uninterested in others. Yuno: Hmm? Why all of a sudden? Yeah, I'm not really interested. But if someone is about to die in front of me, I'd help out. That's just normal, isn't it? Aren't you the same, Kazui-san? You're not interested, fundamentally. Kazui: ...Maybe. I'm not as quick-witted as Kashiki-chan. You know, I've come up in a world that's all about physical strength. I've never even thought about things like that. Or turning the conversation back on the person who approached her. She's assured in her actions and that makes her the type ready to question others if she feels comfortable enough to.

She's opinionated to the point of being able to draw firm boundaries between the people she likes and dislikes. Stating bluntly,

Really? If you ask me, Kotoko-san is someone I would never want to make my friend, though. She's the type who picks a conclusion from the very beginning and won't actually talk to you.

Well, I guess it's arbitrary who one gets along with.

She also has no problem telling people when to shut up as we've all seen,

"Just shut it, will you? You know it all."

Yet her coarse way of speaking tends to be sanded down in favor of infantilizing her. In what I can only believe is an attempt to make her character more palatable at this point. People implying or downright stating that she's too naive to know better.

Even in the face of that she remains forward and earnest about her feelings,

"“Poor naive little girl”? So off the mark, what’s it to you? It’s just absurd."

Yet all of these statements do little to deter this interpretation of her character. Because when faced with opposition to one's preconceived beliefs it's easier to continue to believe the person disagreeing or criticizing the belief simply doesn't know what they're talking about instead of take their input at face value. It's easier to try to find subjective reasons the other party may be disagreeing with one's own well founded and rooted in reason beliefs than to even humor the idea of ourselves being wrong some times.

Even when it's someone discussing their own life.

Sometimes even more so when it's a person discussing their own life. Because then one can easily justify their belief by saying the person was too in the moment to be an objective party or and just doesn't realize why this was bad yet or that they were being used. This is something brought up in both the cases of Yuno and Amane.

Regardless of how belittling or dismissive of the person's perception of reality implying such a thing is. It's basically an attempt to make someone view the life they've lived and experienced under the other parties framing whether they've actually had those experiences or not. It can't be referred to anything other than what it is invalidating. A person has to go through something terrible and traumatic then when they try to tell others about it they get told they're internalizing it wrong, taking it too personally, misreading the situation, or being to positive.

In that sort of situation the only thing a persons words can be taken as is self-serving and hurtful. Which I personally can't fault Yuno for viewing as,

"So nauseating...so creepy..."

It's easy to say believe others when they tell you their experiences and feelings on them until one actively has to do that. Then suddenly another person's lived experience and words on them can be debated actually. Especially if one feels like they interpreted it wrong or is the one being blamed for causing that hurt. If one's concern and kindness is only extended to the people they haven't hurt. If it's only easy to say I'm sorry and that shouldn't have happened when the pain being discussed wasn't caused by us then does it really mean anything?

It's easy to get caught up in the idea of not being wrong. Even easier to lash out and get defensive when someone else tells you that you hurt them. Yet looking past your ego means facing the fact that every can be wrong and hurt others even ourselves. Yes even if we didn't mean to do it, just couldn't get the words right, or were having such a hard time. To me it's realizing yeah my feelings are valid but that doesn't mean the hurt I caused while feeling that way is.

Yes I think x, y, and z about this situation but that doesn't change how you interpreted it. That's just my interpretation.

To think that being wrong is worst than just taking a situation as it is does cause more harm than good.

It took me a pretty long time to get comfortable with the fact that I will be wrong and regardless of how well thought out I find my points to be people will view me as wrong. This is just in general not when it comes to theories or anything. I didn't really get comfortable with being wrong until I was taking a speech class in college. At that point I was faced with a dilemma is it better to wait until you can say something exactly the right way or to say it wrong but still say it.

In a graded situation the latter is much better than the former. I mean you can't really go to a speech class and not speak without failing. So I realized then that sure I hate being wrong but it honestly makes when I am right far more enjoyable. That I'm not as afraid of being wrong as I am of being so scared of being wrong that I ultimately fail to do anything right or anything at all.

There's no perfect explanation that will make people believe what you're saying is true. Even when it's about your own experiences. People will still measure others by their own metrics of success and failure or right and wrong. A lot of people will tell others it's how they said it even if they know full and well they didn't want to hear it to begin with.

In those situation you can contort your words to be as safe or light as possible that won't change their unwillingness to hear you though. A person may even get harsher, colder, show outward signs of depression. Even attempt to remove themselves from the conversation entirely.

None of it will matter to those intent on seeing someone only one way.

i rarely see criticism of s7, so i appreciate you vocalizing what my main issue with it has also always been. every time i do a full rewatch of the series, s7 always feels like a detour from the show’s canon, and i tend to want to speed through it every time. there are select episodes that i appreciate and that i consider successful attempts in what their objective seemed to be for that season (to experiment with amusing stories/concepts and find a way to fit the main characters into it), but overall, it’s always been a bottom 5 season of my despite its near-universal acclaim.

mac’s characterization particularly suffered, and while i understand why people are intrigued by a certain novelty with the iteration of “fat mac”, he is quite a flat, underutilized character in s7. his organic character progression is suspended (as you’ve already stated) and i perceive s7 mac as a standalone character in some capacity. mac’s characterization has evolved and varied more than any other member of the gang throughout the years, but it always feels like a steady, harmonious trajectory while watching until the schism s7 causes between s6 and 8 mac.

(it’s also evident that madbu was central to the formation of mac as a gay character; both wrt to his relationship with dennis and his established intrigue with men’s bodies. and the show/mac’s arc makes it patently obvious, even without the 2009 dvd commentary, that rcg had an awareness of that (which makes it even more bizarre that 2023 rob said mac is ‘very straight’ in that episode lol)).

Honestly I’m not sure I have much more to add on here, you said it all really perfectly, that’s exactly how I feel. Season 7 felt like a detour and, while it does have some really really strong standalone episodes, it’s this weird blip on the character “development” timeline for me.

I’m not surprised a lot of casual fans love S7 for this reason—Mac’s characterisation being warped around his physical appearance is objectively very funny and makes his plots really fun. If you don’t care about the working narrative of Sunny it’s no big deal, but it’s always interesting when I see stans say S7 is their favourite (Mac) season (though at the same time, I’ve kinda noticed that when a lot of people say that it’s due to the fact that they are horny for fat Mac, physically, and they’re not really talking about the quality and cohesiveness of that season as a part of Sunny). There are *great* episodes of S7, but the huge misses (talking the characterisation in Storm of the Century and Anti-Social Network especially) push the season down low on my ranking for that reason.

(Though my rankings and standards being based on narrative and consistent characterisation are really anal, maybe, for a “sitcom”.. lol)

And yes on Rob thinking Mac was “very straight” in that episode, lmfao…I think he was speaking more in terms of his acting: he wasn’t “playing it gay” with the dialogue, but it’s insanely funny when Charlie chimes in like ‘Well, actually if you use a smidge of literary analysis here, you’ll notice you’re very in love with Dennis despite the ‘big boobs draw men into trap’ joke’

🍉 Do you prefer to write short fics or long fics? Multichaptered works or single ones? Why?

Oh, tough choice! Both definitely have benefits – there's something so satisfying about writing something short and just finishing it, like – here's a complete story, all done, entirely wrapped up, my hands are washed. But obviously there are types of plots you can only do in longer fic, and there is also pleasure in building up an arc, in dropping in foreshadowing (I LOVE FORESHADOWING), in being able to have twists or unexpected developments. So, idk! Probably short if I have to choose, but I love both.

🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)

Basically everyone in OFMD other than Ed, who has entirely consumed my thoughts. Even Stede, honestly, I'm mostly just interested in as he relates to Ed, rather than Stede in and of himself. I should pay Stede more attention, poor man.

I think I'd find Jim really fun to write. Again, you know, if I managed to draw my attention away.

In the specific terms of "meaning to write more", structurally I really really need to come up with a b-plot for Izzy in lay me down. But I haven't thought of anything yet, so I just keep idly poking at the idea and going 'I should do something with him....'

Oh, one thing that I'd been thinking about recently – I want more sex that is anything other than anal sex. I mean, anal sex is great! I also sometimes write anal sex! But I get annoyed when fic treats it as the be-all and end-all of sex. I've especially been irritated by it lately in fic that's empathizing how desperate and eager and now-now-now the characters are for sex... and then they go for the method that requires them to stop, go find supplies, and do a bunch of preparation? Whyyyyyy. Let them do something more spontaneous!

So, yeah, handjobs, blowjobs, frottage, intercrural, etc, all those options are some of my favorite tropes.

8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Technically two separate scenes, but they're thematically connected. From Chapter 8 of "What Burns Between Us":

“Y’know that weren’t no lady that was hangin’ all over ya, right?” Osvald glances at him over the rim of his spectacles. “That was fairly obvious. I didn’t think you would mind that, in light of your own interests.” Partitio wants to slam his fist on the table. O’ course I mind! But he takes a deep breath, and tries not to let his anger show. “I don’t get why they even do it. Puttin’ on a show on stage is one thing, but who they tryin’ to impress in here? Anyone can see what they are.” “From my understanding that’s typically not the point. They believe, likely with good reason, that they’re less liable to be harassed acting as they do if they look like women from a distance.” “Oh.” Now Partitio feels guilty for judging them as he first did. Is that what Georgette meant – feeling free? “Additionally, it seems a reasonable conjecture that more men will enjoy their company if they dress and act as such.” Oh. Now Partitio slouches forward onto the table, his chin on his folded arms. “Men like you, ya mean.” “Excuse me?” “Don’t play dumb, it don’t suit ya.” He sighs. “Normal men. Men with wives n’ families, or who want ‘em leastwise. Men who only mess ‘round with fellas when they’re all riled up and ain’t got no other option. And when you do it’s all just one big game o’ pretend.” And I ain’t normal. Not that he needs to even say that; if those ladies had him figured out so quickly then surely Osvald must have pieced that together ages ago. He envisions himself wearing a dress and with paint on his face, giggling like a brothel girl as he walks arm-in-arm with Osvald down a busy street. He’s not sure he likes it, or if he even could. “Have I done something to offend you?” “Just…just forget it. You wouldn’t understand.” Partitio knows he’s pouting, but doesn’t care. Osvald regards him quietly for a long moment. “I think I do, actually.”

Then later, after they go back to their hotel and are in the middle of their second sexual encounter - and the first one with anal sex:

“I want you to know something, Partitio,” Osvald says, his voice ragged. Partitio pulls back from his embrace to look the other man square in the face.  “All the time that I’ve known you, these many months…I’ve seen you for what you are. Exactly what you are, without pretense or fabrication…” Osvald slams up into him, and Partitio howls. “…And I like what I see.”

And then Partitio has an orgasm. I figured that that was exactly what he needed to hear in that moment, in combination with the physical stimulation of bottoming for the first time. Up until this point in the fic Partitio has been ashamed of his attraction to men, and resigned to the belief that most of the ones who hook up with him aren't actually attracted to him but are instead using him as a stand-in for women. This is why, for instance, he has such an ambivalent reaction to the characters he meets in the first scene (variously crossdressers, drag queens, and/or trans women - as explained in the endnotes, I've left specific interpretations up to the reader), especially since he'd just watched one of them publicly flirting with Osvald while he felt like he couldn't do anything about it because that would be an admission that he's into guys. As one commenter put it, this is the moment where Osvald gives him explicit verbal confirmation that he enjoys Partitio on his own terms, and not as a replacement for his late wife or for women in general. It also calls back to Partitio's anxiety from the first chapters of the fic about Osvald figuring out that he's gay. It turns out that he did have Partitio pegged from the beginning...but he's also obviously into it.

In addition, I really made an effort to keep both characters' voices faithful to their canon dialogue. Of course there's Partitio's distinctive US Southern/Texan accent and speech patterns, which I've glad to see I've gotten praise for as it can be a pain to manage, but there's Osvald to consider too. Osvald's dialogue is generally terse and economical, though his internal monologues get to be rambling which I had the opportunity to switch over to for later dialogue scenes. I'm proud of how I've been able to find what I feel is a good balance toward how different they sound, and even occasionally pull some humor out of it - which the game itself does on occasion, because these two have a bunch of mildly flirty banter in canon.

17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Mostly in order, though I'll frequently go back and make small revisions if I think of a better way to phrase things or if I need to change something to have it line up with later writing.

A good example is in what is currently the latest chapter; it wasn't originally going to have a sex scene, or at least not the specific one that it does, but then I saw a great opportunity for a comedic bit two chapters down the line and just had to write in a scene with pec worship.

Lastly in the vein of maybe I should stop opening the notes of posts at all, is seeing someone claim that the "mauraders fandom" is a "totally separate" fandom from the hateful wizard books and not related, thus they shouldn't be accused of promoting transphobic work, and someone had to break down for them exactly how stupid that argument is. The fact that they're apparently telling themselves that explains why the acquaintance I know who I already wasn't comfortable being friends with because she still goes to Catholic church with her family was comfortable referencing reading mauraders fanfiction while knowing she was in front of a trans person. hm ig I get what you're saying? honestly I mainly wrote this post bc the thing i hate most in these aus is people making matthew into a knives clone lol. scott pilgrim is one of those things where if you wanted to make a swap au plausible in canon you'd have to go pretty deep into character development hell, and tbh i don't even fault the fandom for not doing that it's insanely hard.

the main reason why i don't think knives is matthew is because going off of the show, he comes to terms with it in the most healthy way he can manage by focusing his attention on other things. The most prominent moment i can think of off the top of my head is when he completely dismisses her while they're going to watch the musical. not to say that he doesn't still hurt, but he's not actively fixating on it anymore. He has his own stuff going on, like kim. but yeah, i get that they have that sense of a young and unstable relationship.

Idk if the insults can really be considered a vendetta against scott? Everyone insults scott. he's just very lame lol. one of kim's first lines is her insulting scott. not to mention that were talking abt a dramatic ass theatre kid who unironically says things like 'youll pay for this'. on knives and matthew both being left behind— kim got left behind too! when scott left their town he didn't tell his actual literal girlfriend at the time, and that makes it hurt all the more. there's also the fact that they were scott and ramona's respective first relationships, so there's a few more similarities there.

im not taking wallace as envy that seriously haha i agree it could make an interesting au but of course wallace isnt really the 'join a band' type, or interested in fame. i put wallace as lisa because there's some interesting parallels— I think it could be canon plausible for him and scott to have had feelings that they never acted on. i also don't think it's as likely for scott to have left wallace and created that age-old schism that ramona and roxy had. they're a little codependent like that.

ramona saw lisa as a threat largely bc she didn't feel secure in her relationship with scott. I'm looking at lisa more for her role in the story, which is to make ramona jealous and incite her paranoia, rather than her actual character bc if we see it that way they're nothing alike ajdkflskflsl but yeah really any of scott's exes could take that role and still make sense, im just picking wallace bc i like him

the fact that roxy was willing to go back to ramona and apparently make out with her while ramona and scott were going through their rough patch even though scottmona hadn't broken up speaks to a kind of desperation, i think. there's much more left unsolved there than with matthew, because their thing was way longer and much more complex.

knives strikes me as similar because she was so young and smitten, so she threw everything she had into it since she thought what they had mattered to scott. Then, when she was unceremoniously dropped she decided she needed to fight like hell to get it back. (similarities between them, yknow.) it's ultimately unhealthy even though it was never their fault, and they do get the closure they need at the end of the comics and show respectively, when scott and ramona make amends and apologise.

all this to say: i don't think there's any one true way to swap these characters. this is simply my thoughts on it. bryan lee o'malley managed the impressive feat of writing a very large quantity of distinct and complex characters! because of this it is very hard to make a swap au that 'makes sense', so to speak, and i think it's fine to not want to think about them in such anal detail. (i mean, i wouldnt know, but...) if you wanna treat them like conduits for cool stuff, youre allowed. I like the concept of swap aus! scott having a fanny pack subspace is a fave idea of mine, and i like a lot of the stuff that ppl make, though i wont always engage if it's not my jam. it just rubs me the wrong way regarding the intention, considering theyre two out of of very few poc characters in the cast, to just give matthew knives' personality, because i feel that theyre just nothing alike. so yeah.

Sam Alexander - Legacy Characters and Their Development

Been wanting to do a mini-essay about my thoughts on Sam Alexander Nova for a long time, so here we go. Put it under the cut so as not to clog up the tag feed. Warning there will be lots of tangents as I am ADHD and cannot help it.

Alrighty, so as we know Sam is a relatively newer character in terms of comic books. His first debut was in Marvel Point One #1 in the Avengers vs X-Men crossover. This was back in November 2011. This would make him around 11 years old. In this short span of time(because yeah, compared to other characters Sam is still pretty young) he has had three volumes( Nova Vol 5-7), been apart of at least three team books (New Warriors 2014, All New All Different Avengers, and most recently Champions), and has had a variety of cameos and one-offs and specials, and that's not even getting into the animated stuff he's been in. While his appearances have thinned out over the years, we still see him pop in things every now and then despite not being very popular at all(this is unfortunate, but he's still my favorite at least). A good question to explore, perhaps, why is this character still keeping up appearances? Why is he being kept around?

The answer I believe lies with his creator, Jeph Loeb. He is one of the original writers for Sam, basing him off of his own son he lost to cancer back in 2006.

After that, it was probably not much more than 1 or 2 years after that that Jeph was pulled into the creation of the Ultimate Spiderman Tv show. It was originally announced in 2010, which means it was definitely worked on before then, and then debuted in 2012. Jeph was one of the main creators, and he decided to pull together some admittedly underrated and kind of unknown characters for the show. But when it came to Nova, he decided to start completely from scratch. Instead of going with the original, Richard Rider, he went with his own creation, Sam. This could have been for a variety of reasons such as: Richard Rider being too similar to Peter Parker(just take a look at his origin issue and you'll see what I mean), he was just killed off in the comic books which would lead to a natural opening for a new character, etc.

These are all substantial factors to take into consideration, but combined I think Jeph saw the opportunity to honor his late son. Legacy characters happen quite frequently in comic books(pretty much the entirety of Young Avengers for example), but Sam Alexander definitely feels a bit more... personal. He not only represents a connection to another beloved comic book character, but to a real person as well. Even though Loeb didn't stay on as a writer for Sam very long, you can see in his beginning issues where he added the info about the conception of Sam as a character that this was very important to him. And Sam being important to Loeb I think is what initially drew some people in, because the kind of dedication and love that goes into a character like that doesn't go unnoticed.

So people gave Sam a shot(ignoring the anal Rich Rider fans that cropped up in the beginning, FYI you can't be a fan of Rich if you hate Sam, thems the rules) and so it went. I remember reading all the issues of Volume 5-7 as they were coming out, and when Gerry Duggan took over for quite a large portion of the original run it was magnificent. He gave Sam interesting storylines, endearing character development, and overall I think did a superb job handling the character. His writing of Sam is most definitely what made me grow fond of the character, I don't know if I would have become a fan otherwise. Unfortunately the whole Marvel Comic Universe was being rebooted so they had to wrap things up quickly with a cap at 31 issues, but he ended Volume 5 on a good note with Sam reuniting with his dad.

Then enters my least favorite volume, Volume 6. If you thought the white-washing with Sam in Volume 5 was bad, it got so much worse. Not to mention the complete 180 in personality. In the beginning(Vol 5), Sam was an asshole. There's no sugarcoating that part about his character. But I liked that. Because when you start out a character like that, the room for development is immense. And honestly, I love watching characters grow. I love watching Sam grow. Volume 6 felt like a slap in the face because I wasn't reading about Sam. I was reading the generic teenage superhero Peter Parker clone. Sam went from being impulsive and reckless to boring and dull. Not to mention the whole 'evil clone' cliche with his dad made the ending of the previous volume feel so hollow and cheap. His original supporting cast was gone(and my ship was exiled from canon, so long Carrie), and the hinted at storyline of Sam possibly being half-alien was long since buried under the rug. It was not enjoyable for me to read at all.

Moving on before I seethe in rage, let's talk a bit about Volume 7. Never have I felt more robbed that a series was canceled too early. We had some major wins. Beautiful artwork(big points for not white-washing Sam), the dynamic between Sam and Rich(they're like squabbling siblings, I love it), and the writing was heading in a promising direction. My only complaint is Carrie and Principal Philbin not returning, along with Sam being in the chess club. Sam becoming a proficient chess player is so important to me, you have no idea. The comedy potential is golden. Imagine him beating Amadeus Cho in a game. That nerd would die from the shock. Anyways, I did like Sam's personality in this. I felt like he had developed into a jerk with a heart of gold. The jerk part is more toned down from Volume 5, and he isn't the goody two shoes he was in Volume 6, we reached a good mixture. Because that is what Sam is. He's a kid with a good heart, he just doesn't always go the best way about it. Which is understandable, given that most teenagers are not very mature in the slightest. This series would have been good development for him, and I'm forever heartbroken that I will never see where it would have gone.

But circling back around to the question, even though his character isn't that popular, the right people care about him and that's what keeps him relatively in the loop. And perhaps when he gets adapted to the MCU we will see a surge in popularity, but hopefully not at the expense of destroying what was so special about Sam in the first place. Let's hope that Feige and them don't forget what Sam was originally meant to be:

A grieving father holding onto his son in the most loving and familiar way he knew how.

By doing so will keep him in some ways alive forever. It's beautiful. To any and all future MCU adaptations, please keep this in mind when it comes to Sam. Sam's a character created from grief and love, and should not be taken lightly. If you managed to read all of this, I would love to have an open discussion about Sam and the Nova comics. It's been a bit quiet around here.

Gonna step my toes in the stupidest discourse waters possible, but personal musings (that I’ve told literally any person who will listen to me);

You’re all going to hear a rant I have about a shallow crossover comparison that’s way too popular. With the caveat that I’m not actually, like, upset with anyone for enjoying it, I just think it’s not as logical as some people make it out to be, and I think it warrants thinking about why it’s so popular despite the incongruity, if you’re into thinking about media and the things it can accidentally imply.

When people do Heathers crossovers with Danganronpa, it’s very logical to do so, as both are stories about the cruelty and murder of teenagers and how society affects them, but the single most common choice for JD is literally a character who is the total opposite of JD, Nagito Komaeda.

I especially see it done with the song Meant To Be Yours (bomb ass song btw) and that they’re made out to be similar because of that, the only thing they actually share is bombs and mental illness, and it makes me kinda wary that that’s what they’re boiled down to, honestly, like no one thinks past that.  

Down to the core of their characters, they’re polar opposites in their very moral foundations. Think about what they believe and what they’re like; JD hates the social system that birthed him and wants to blow it all up to show how fucked up it is. … and Komaeda obsessively loves the social system that birthed him and adores everything about it and would literally kill himself to uphold it despite how fucked up it is.

Let me boil it down to the most very basic; JD thinks ‘system bad, destroy the system’ and Komaeda thinks ‘love the system, I’d do anything to uphold the system.’

They’re literal polar opposites in terms of philosophy.

I don’t understand how someone could listen to JD’s ranting about the bomb plot in ‘Meant To Be Yours’ and not grasp that he hates society, and then think ‘yeah, that fits Komaeda, whose main defining trait is his obsessive adherence to the social structure of Hope’s Peak’.

I get it, bombs are cool, and it’s a thing now to do Komaeda as JD, like, a lot, but I have to admit, it still irks me to see how hard people missed the point of both their characters to reach their conclusions. It’s like they look at both characters and ignore everything about them besides ‘oh, wow, they’re crazy and want to blow things up, they’re exactly the same!’

sorry, the morals part does get me, like… the actual song Meant To Be Yours is literally all about how JD hates society, how can you ignore that and say ‘yeah, this fits Komaeda’

The entire point of Komaeda’s character is that he’s obsessed with upholding the system. You have to willfully ignore everything about both of them besides that they’ve blown stuff up and aren’t in their right minds, up to and including the actual text of the song itself, to connect them together through it, and honestly it genuinely does frustrate me that people boil down their characters into ‘crazy guy that loves bombs’.

It feels weird and almost… not maliciously ableist or anything, but ableist adjacent? I’m not sure how to word it, and I entirely realize I’m reading too much into a stupid crossover trend done for fun, but I do think if you’re into thinking critically, it’s interesting to muse on.

And again, to be clear, I’m aware that 99% of the people making things like this are just doing it cause it’s fun to draw stuff like that and have Nagito making crazy expressions (absolutely fun) and they aren’t wrong to do so, I just think it’s interesting to discuss stuff like this even if the answer is just ‘lol, cause it’s fun’.

I know I’m an anal wad whose obsessed with the text of fiction, but it really just sometimes hits me that other people take such different things away from the game than I did, lol. I guess it comes down to ultimately that, to me, a characters motivations for why they do what they do matter more than their specific actions, especially when it’s for crossovers and connecting characters, and for some people, the opposite is true.

OH ok this is all very interesting to think about........ so in this au/concept i assume every member has musical interest/talent (since lbr haruhi could NEVER be in a band for the. obvious reasons.) so... I'll give my general overviews as well as what I think their music would sound like :D

So Tamaki is a solo artist and he'd make pop songs as you theorized. He'd be VERY big on his stag presence, very idol-esque. There's actually an offical(sorta) English in character song for Tamaki and I think it sounds exactly like the kind of stuff he'd make. I feel like some of his other music would sound like this tho :) It's like...idk how to put it bc i'm not good with classifying music, but it's like pop but not saccharine. It's more moody. moody pop. I would like to assume he has a lot of piano in his music.

KYOYA is...interesting. Again a solo artist. Unlike Tamaki who places a LOT of emphasis on stage presence, Kyoya operates mostly from his house and does not really make public appearances....now I know many peoples first thoughts for Kyoya + music is "he likes classical" and i'm sure he RESPECTS it, but tbh...I think it's not his favorite. esp bc of the family he was raised in, he was forced to listen to it like ALL THE TIME and now he's so sick of it. So for him I'm going for calm but still lively songs with an emphasis on string instruments, like this and this.

The twins would DEF be making industrial rock/grunge rock and stuff like that. Very loud, beat heavy. Also with some dupstep influences. The titles would be very joky/provocative, think Anal Cunt (sorry in advance if you dont know who that is) but their titles are just a LITTLE less extreme. But same general concept. In terms of general sound this is what I have in mind. However, as individuals, I think their music would be very different

Kaoru would make very "odd" music. I think it leans more electronic/rock, usually with very odd-sounding parts, bordering on denpa (songs meant to invoke a feeling of uneasiness/discomfort). The lyrics would probably be cryptic if not a little disconcerting. look my mans has 5 different mental issues he needs SOMEWHERE to vent them. I feel like his music would generally sound and have lyrics kinda like this (promoting my own translation channel...) or like this

Hikaru on the other hand is a little more true to their shared band concept. Rock, maybe with metal influences. Up-beat stuff that can be kinda goofy in lyrics. Also rap in it maybe? Songs like this and this are what I have in mind in terms of sound.

Hani would have a band with Mori :) I think their style is interesting since I imagine they're very different musically, so combined they make..... pop metal. HEAR MME OUT. IT WOULD BE FUNNY. idk why but I always saw Hani as the kinda guy who secretly is a metal fan....it just seems funny....he thinks it's very fun an energetic!! this is the kinda stuff they'd make. Hani would be the vocalist most of it but Mori does some too

Now, alone... I think Hani makes what you'd expect. Very saccharine pop-ish songs like this one. Just fun nonsense.

Mori would def be more towards slow-ish, low-fi songs that are quiet. I'm thinking like this? Alternatively you can say more traditional slow songs and I agree, but tbh I...do not like like slow music much so I have no examples. Low-fi is the only slow music genre I seem to enjoy.

Ok Haruhi. Haruhi is fucking hard. I have no god damn clue what her music would be like. She's also a stand-alone and much like Kyoya does not care for people knowing who she is, even less so. I think she just uses some stage name and nobody knows her face and name lol. Her music...I...I guess something like this? I'm really lost on this one. Ricky and Gina haven't even interacted in half the season? Also Gina confessed and she was blatantly rejected? Ricky knew about her feelings but never tried to hint that he felt the same? He has spend years in love with Nini, and most of the season he spend sulking over her?

Even after they broke up and he was free to "follow his heart" he never even showed a hint he wanted to pursue something with Gina. EJ mentioned her and he didn't even bulge, but when EJ mentioned Nini he got sad.

I am sorry but I don't see how this is "not a normal Disney relationship" and how "their storyline is more mature". There's practically no story with them. Whatever they may had had is over.

Gina liked him, she got rejected, moved on and started to fall for a guy that genuinely liked her back and wasn't shy to show and admit it. Ricky is slowly trying to move on, but his feelings for Nini are way too deep so he may never even be able to move on and now just got a rebound, yeah he is an idiot.

Why would you want someone awesome like Gina to wait around for a guy that has not a 100% interest in her and is still pining over someone else. SHE DESERVES WAY BETTER THAN BEING A SECOND CHOICE.

The sooner you guys come to terms with the fact it is a plot device, the better. Even if Rina isn’t the endgame down the line, which I truly don’t might. They'll still have the best chemistry and best scene of the show and without any laughing backtrack with lines that the actors couldn’t take seriously. Also, isn't interesting how you Rinis (because I can tell you are literally a Rini like 80% of PWs "shippers") always use the same tiring excuse of "second choice", but are okay with PW despite EJ being exactly the same thing. So Gina is able to move on and out grow her deep feelings for Ricky (because I don't know how you can watch 2A and think Gina's feelings for Ricky were a childish little crush) but don't give Ricky the benefit of him maturing, growing up and getting his feelings right? Uhm.

Lastly, if you are having breakdowns on people's asks over their own theories of a show (a DISNEY SHOW) you are the one that needs to grow up. Side Note: Jacey didn’t get any romantic interaction on s2 of Dawson's Creek, barely crumbs, and still got the endgame, so lack of scenes does nothing to me.

Not to mention that he’d taken out the gay as fuck romance and replaced it with something so drearily heteronormative. Jaskier didn’t have a problem with Yennefer, the lead actress, but he’d really been hoping that he’d be able to swindle a smooch with his long term crush and fellow thespian, Geralt Rivia.

The man was completely dreamy; tall, brooding and built like a house. There weren’t many men that were taller than Jaskier, and certainly not many who could throw him around like Geralt could. Jaskier was completely smitten.

But no.

Valdo just had to steal his idea and sell it to the theatre studies teacher before Jaskier could pitch it. He’d taken something utterly brilliant and made it unremarkable. It was pandering to the masses, taking out the gay romance to make it less ‘controversial’. It was bullshit, absolute fucking bullshit.

Jaskier sighed, tugging at his costume. It was itchy and cheap as fuck, instead of the fancy silk the bard character would definitely prefer. Dandelion was a nobleman, a bard, a poet, a troubadour. Dandelion wasn’t limited by the college costume department. It was devastating. Jaskier’s whole vision was falling apart. Even the witcher’s armour was scrappy and ill-fitting. Poor Gerald wouldn’t be able to fight a dog let alone a wyvern. Of course, for the next three scenes, Gerald would be off having adventures without Dandelion, because Valdo fucking Marx had butchered his script. It was supposed to be him and Geralt, sorry, Dandelion and Gerald, for the whole play. The bastard English Major had known exactly what he was doing, the cockblocking little prick.

He really needed to get laid. It would wipe that smarmy look off of Valdo’s face, and Jaskier could go back to being the phenomenal actor that he was. He sighed again and peered out behind the curtain. Valdo was sitting in the auditorium watching the dress rehearsal, his bloody shirt barely done up, his long dark hair bunched up in a bun on the top of his head revealing the undercut on either side.

“That’s not being quiet,” Jaskier growled in Valdo’s ear, fishing a condom from the other man’s pocket. “how predictable, do you have lube too?”
