Hi, fellow aspecs! For pride month in case you haven’t heard of other aspec films. Japan has two films in store around the years 2022 to 2023.

“I Am What I Am” / “Freckles” / “Sobakasu”
- Directed by: Shinya Tamada
- You can watch this from today until June 19th for free on: https://watch.jff.jpf.go.jp/page/jffonline2024/ you just need to sign up and you’re all set (It may not be available to some countries). Those who can’t access that, you can message me for an alternative site! The film is about Kasumi Sobata, an aromantic asexual woman struggling in an amatonormative world.

“People Who Talk to Plushies are Kind”
- Here we have an asexual character. If you wanna know where you can watch it, feel free to dm me here! || Story: Creating a portrait of sensitive teens and their concerns, Kaneko Yurina’s adaptation of Omae Ao’s novel takes us into the midst of the Plushy Club at a university. It is a place packed with furry and comforting friends whom the club members talk to in order to relay their anxieties and fears. Male student Nanamori and female students Shiraki, and Mugito are the latest club intake, each wrestling with issues such as love, masculinity and femininity, fear of others and sexism in society. Just watched "I am what I am", which is a Japanese movie about a 30 years old aroace woman. It's so good and the portrayal of her experiences is very realistic. I like the way this movie is structured and how it's telling her story. I highly recommend it, as it's not only excellent representation but also just a very good movie.

I Am What I Am (2022). Also called Sobakasu or Freckles
“Why can’t people understand that I’m happy and fulfilled even without any interest in romance?” A film that warmly follows a woman reflecting on how she wants to live, and sheds light on new value systems.
My review under the cut!
I am both a film nerd and aroace, and am such very conflicted about how I feel about this movie.
On one hand, the depiction of the aroace experience is really well done. Or at least... the main character's journey felt very true to my own experiences of being aroace. The movie generally shows amatonormativity in several of its forms, and how it affects both aspecs and non aspecs alike. It touched on how it feels to be a non-partnering aroace in your 30's; how isolating it can feel to be constantly misunderstood by everyone around you, how it feels to meet people who claim they feel the same way as you do but who later reveal they meant it in a different way, what it's like to form connections with people who don't share your sexuality but do share your values and beliefs, what it's like having an uncertain future where there's no roadmap of how and who to build it with. It touched upon having the courage to tell your story, having the courage to reveal your truth to those you love, the wondering whether the lack of relationships means you're not grown up, guilt at not returning someone's feelings, fear of being asked out, and lots more.
On the other hand, I felt like the film could have benefitted from a stronger narrative structure. As a whole, it was more like a series of moments strung together than a proper narrative, which might work well if the film was shorter, but felt a little draggy for a film that was an hour and forty five minutes long. I also felt like the production was average. There was nothing special about the shots, the framing, etc. and some scenes felt too long or too random.
I really love the concepts tackled in the film, but I'm not sure how well it holds up as a film in its own right. Makes me wonder if I would have been compelled to watch it if I hadn't related to the main character so much. As someone who is also a woman, also aroace, also 30 and also from a similar sort of culture, I might be THE target audience for this?
Either way though, I do highly recommend it if only to see the film depict experiences that I have never seen depicted anywhere else before.

tagged by @eddiebabygirldiaz thank youuuuu, last night was a fun writing night so extra thank you on the timing!!!
pacrim au because... what else would it be?
“Buck, you’re hurt,” Eddie says, but he needs this. That’s always when Eddie fights things hardest – when he needs them.
Buck finds the spot on Eddie’s neck that takes him apart, but he doesn’t suck, doesn’t bite. He keeps it paintbrush soft, dragging the touch back up his jaw.
“You made me dinner,” he whispers against the hinge of it.
“Mm,” is all Eddie can say, because Buck’s good at this. Good at bleeding the tension out of Eddie. He’s not sure he’s ever been this good at anything.
Buck presses his lips into Eddie’s hairline because Eddie’s let himself fall against Buck’s shoulder, half in Buck’s lap, half beside him. “I told you not to make me dinner – that was supposed to be my thing.”
Eddie raises a hand to smooth the bandage on Buck’s neck. “You can’t tell me what to do.” It’s the kind of childlike petulance that only ever comes from bone-deep exhaustion. Buck laughs and hooks a finger beneath Eddie’s chin, tips it up, and kisses him, slow and lingering. “You love it when I tell you what to do.”
A shudder runs through Eddie, and he bites his bottom lip until Buck tugs it loose. “And what do you want me to do now?”

I Am What I Am (Tamada Shinya, 2022)
Yes, why aren't there more asexual romance movies? A coupling of the self, a defeat of loneliness, meeting cute with people who can bring brightness and allow one to find comfort in oneself. I never expected it, it's cruel, but Maeda Atsuko really has bloomed as an actress. And Ito Marika looks to be rising the same (although it would be good to see her expand her range some). Idol success stories!
