VALL Chapter 1 - The Warning

So as a recap - yes I run this substack. No, I haven't read this novel. I'm really looking forwards to getting to experience new (to me) canonical Sherlock Holmes for the very last time in my life... and I'm going to write a bunch about it, so hold on tight.

“I am inclined to think—” said I. “I should do so,” Sherlock Holmes remarked impatiently. I believe that I am one of the most long-suffering of mortals; but I'll admit that I was annoyed at the sardonic interruption.

LOL I love how we jump right into Holmes and Watson banter. Watson's understated "“you are a little trying at times" reminds me of his reaction to Holmes shooting holes in the walls at Baker Street being "I felt strongly that neither the atmosphere nor the appearance of our room was improved by it."

Of course we don't get any indication of the tone in which he says these things, but I think we can guess Watson is countering with a little acerbic wit of his own.

So, Holmes has received a letter from a mysterious figure known as 'Porlock'

Picture to yourself the pilot fish with the shark, the jackal with the lion—anything that is insignificant in companionship with what is formidable:

This idea of the pilot fish is a very cool metaphor. Unfortunately it is entirely ruined for me because it was also used in the Christmas Invasion episode of Doctor Who to describe these things and that's always where my brain is going to go:

Porlock is one of Moriarty's henchmen or representatives! Which makes me interested in the fact that I've never come across this character in pastiches or adaptations or fanfic - why not?

(Also it makes no sense for Watson to know all about Moriarty but that's a Continuity Thing and we all know Arthur Conan Doyle didn't let that sort of thing get in the way of telling his story - more power to him, honestly.)

“You are developing a certain unexpected vein of pawky humour, Watson, against which I must learn to guard myself.

I JUST SAID THAT, HOLMES.

“May I be there to see!” I exclaimed devoutly.

Well THAT is a sucker punch of a line. No, Watson, you won't be there to see, I'm afraid. See, there will be this Swiss boy... anyway, we're getting off track.

Turns out Porlock is a bit of a mole (I wouldn't quite go so far as to say 'double agent'), and has been giving Holmes information provided he is paid enough. This includes a secret cipher which relates to a particular book, which Holmes assumes will arrive in the second post.

GUTTED I didn't read this book when I was 11, I loved ciphers and would have lapped this up.

“Your native shrewdness, my dear Watson, that innate cunning which is the delight of your friends...

"your friends" Lol Holmes just say "Me" we know that's what you mean - and gosh, he's being so sarcastic with Watson!

Billy the page shows up with the second post and readers, I CHEERED at Billy. Does he say anything? No. But BILLY!!! Alas the letter from Porlock says that he just had an unpleasant encounter with Moriarty (with an envelope addressed to 221b in his possession, whoops!) and so so he won't be sending along the key to the cypher.

I love that Holmes' reaction to this isn't frustration at not getting his cypher, but worry for Fred Porlock, and hope that Moriarty doesn't actually suspect him. THIS is why I love Canon Holmes - I think he is fundamentally kind...

“Perhaps there are points which have escaped your Machiavellian intellect.

Holmes points out that they might be able to work out which book is required for the cypher, and guides Watson through his deductive process - which is adorable. And I loved following along with it too - with my knowledge of Victorian ephemera I was hoping it was going to be a Bradshaw, but as Holmes notes to both Watson and me, the range of vocabulary needs to be broader!

It's a Whitaker's Almanac! But not the new edition - the old one. This is a fun little reversal which gives us a moment of Holmes thinking he's 'failed'.

The message suggests that someone called Douglas who lives at Birlstone House, Birlstone, is in danger.

(Clearly this is a totally different house to Hurlstone, from Musgrave Ritual....)

After deciphering the message, Holmes and Watson get a visit from an Inspector MacDonald. I was a little sorry this isn't one of the familiar Yarders (Hopkins, my beloved...) but I'm going to be interested to get to know him. Alas, Holmes is too late to save Douglas - he has already been murdered.

So, uh, I'm having the time of my life reading this, honestly. It's such incredibly good fun. I'm intrigued that whatever has happened to Douglas must somehow be linked to Moriarty.

There's a lot of banter about Watson's intellect which I feel should frustrate me more, a lot of the dialogue feels like it's bordering on being quite patronising to Watson, but I think his reactions suggest this is comfortable back and forth done from a place of security in each other.

Random things I’ve thought of over this past year of various fandoms and varieties ( or at least some of them. There is so many more)

- does mega mind keep up with his prison parents- and by that I mean does mega mind write postcards with detailed calligraphy to the people who helped raise him in prison?

- an adventure where Macaque and Wukong have to work together and one of the main obstacles/ conflicts is that they have to do a duo performance ( dance, a short play, whatever) and since Wukong has stage fright Macaque has to help him get over it. Leads to potentially spending time together, discussing insecurities, and finding a way for Wukong to be able to handle his stage fright and then a performance of something that is totally and definitely not romantic in the slightest.

- I would like to see a fanfic with Sportacus from lazy town and the Adam’s family( the movies with Angelica Houston). I think Gomez and sportacus doing ten mamushka would be very entertaining- or fencing. Maybe it’s revealed the food grandmother makes is insanely healthy so it’s amazing for sportacus. Maybe we get to see slightly clashing personalities betweeen the worlds. I would like to see a lot of interaction between Gomez and sportacus specifically because of their personalities, how they both love their tall dark partners, both are insanely athletic, and both are extremely passionate and care deeply about those around them.

- the Adam’s family makes snowmen. At one point one of the kids( likely Wednesday) shoots on with a crossbow. It’s an impressive shot. It begins to bleed. Either they don’t explain and just leave it in the graveyard or an Adam’s like fester pops out of it.

- we need to better and further explore what happens with Mrs. Weasley after the end of the books. How does her life change after she and her family and friends have changed so much? Does she strive to become minister of magic? Does she work with mcgonigall? How has she changed from this extremely kind hearted woman to who she would be now after the death of her freinds and family? Will her marriage last with her semi-incompetent husband? She was so powerful she struck down one of the most powerful mages in the wizarding world, what else can she do with that power and emotion? Does she become a defense against the dark arts teacher at hogwarts- an actually good one- who teaches the truth and dangers of wizard magic and teaches how to responsibly use it, as well as quick distractions and tricks to help escape a situation one otherwise might get hurt in( ala Fred and George’s old tricks)? Does she treat Harry and her children the same as she did before?

If yall already know people or media who have explored these ideas lmk please because I need them

Ask game: 001, Candace x Jeremy

Ah, Canderemy. They're delightful:

when I started shipping it if I did:

I've kind of always shipped them, like 'ah, Candace and Jeremy go together', but it's only been in this rewatch that I've actually gone 'I am obsessed with these adorable cuties, they're actually perfect'

my thoughts:

They're perfect, they go together so well, they adore each other, they're endgame to me.

What makes me happy about them:

I just love how much Jeremy obviously loves Candace--he's just as flustered asking her out as she is to be asked out, he just rolls with her insanity, and he just loves her for who she is.

What makes me sad about them:

I guess that they don't have as many focus episodes as I wish they did.

things done in fanfic that annoys me:

I'm not a huge fan of where writers write their relationship as though Candace's crazy is specifically what Jeremy likes about her, as though his type is crazy girls or something like that. I just feel like it devalues the fact that Jeremy likes her neither for her crazy or in spite of it, but rather because she is Candace.

things I look for in fanfic:

To be honest, there isn't enough Canderemy fanfic, I take what I can get--although I am trying to fill that gap with my current P&F mystery fanfic, which has plenty of Canderemy. I guess, if I had to say what I looked for it would be them being written correctly.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:

This is tough, because they're made to be IMO. I think @cometcrystal is correct that other than Jeremy, Stacy is really the only other option for Candace, because they're the only two people who even remotely get Candace. I have no idea who else Jeremy can end up with--someone nice hopefully.

My happily ever after for them:

Happily married, with their three children (Amanda, Xavier and Fred). Candace is a prosecution attorney, Jeremy's a music teacher (I'm aware that these are popular headcanons, but I delight in them).

who is the big spoon/little spoon:

Candace is the little spoon. She deserves to be held.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity:

I'm not sure about favourite, but in my heart, they go to comic conventions together, both being huge nerds.

RadioApple Week ; ~DANCE~ I forget the day number oops)

Am I doing this right?! I completely missed this whole week because I literally just rejoined tumblr. Anyway, here's my out of context mid-fanfic contribution to RadioApple Week. (You'll have to forgive the inconsistencies of Alastor's knowledge of the song it's an unedited WIP, regardless one of my favorite scenes)

-Getting the ballroom ready for a patron's wedding venue

"You shouldn't apologize." 

Alastor looked away from Lucifer at the blue windows, as if invested in them instead of what he had just seen- a magnetic little creature bouncing and brimming with ideas, his eyes shining with the love of dreams and invention. Lucifer was... 

Well, he was rather cute at that moment.

"Pardon?" 

"Oh," Alastor said, "I mean, you shouldn't apologize for loving something. Don't bring yourself down. It will turn you cold." 

He allowed a true grin and added, "Anyway, if you should turn all depressed and miserable on us, your daughter will have a fit, and that ruins everyone else's day." 

"Yeah you're right," Lucifer said. "Huh. So what do you know about being depressed and miserable?" 

"Nothing at all," Alastor responded airily, "Shall we let Charlie know this may be the only available room?" 

"Sure." 

Lucifer turned around and on a whim it seemed, made blue and white twinkle lights appear around the ceiling rim with a wave of his hands, making the room seem full of starlight. 

Alastor heard him whistling a tune from behind him.

"What is that from?" It sounded familiar. 

Lucifer chuckled, "You're a fan of tap dance, and you don't know Fred Astaire? He is *the* king of tap. It's from Top Hat." 

"I don't watch picture shows."

He was lying. He remembered that song, now. He'd seen the movie, used to play it on repeat back when he'd actually owned a television set...before Vox had inexplicably ruined them for him.

"You should. You'd like that one. *Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain?*," Lucifer sang. 

Alastor heard the little patter of a tap routine being conducted behind him and he whirled about to see it, amused. 

"You dance like Fred." 

Lucifer tried out a few different simpler footworks.

"Thought you don't watch 'picture shows.' And really? I always thought I was more of a Ginger." 

"I've seen it. And Fred's style is ecstatic. Well. More airy...he'd off and fly away if he didn't have her to  ground him." 

"You were going on your way now you've got to remaaaain..." 

"Oh, do stop, we have things to do." Alastor shoved him away, only for the little king to bounce back on his left, continuing to sing, "Just as you were going, leaving me all at seaaa! Gah!" (Alastor had shoved him again) 

"The clouds broke! They broke, and oh, what a break for mee!" 

Alastor whirled to get in his face, "Will you not shut your trap!" 

"I will after you dance with me. I know you adore the routine. I can see it. Your feet don't lie," Lucifer grinned. 

Alastor did. He knew how the song continued. He knew every inch of this scene; he'd watched it many times. It was one of the only movies he *would* sit and watch.

I can see the sun up high, though we're caught in a storm... 

I can see where you and I could be cozy and warm.

He remembered the expressiveness of Ginger's face as Fred cooed this song to her, giving him the time of day only in her smile, then giving up halfway through the song to let herself dance with him. 

Alastor let his radio crackle into the air, summoning the rest of the song with ease. 

"Let the rain pitter patter, but it really doesn't matter if the skies are gray...long as I can be with you, it's a lovely day!"~, Fred Astaire's voice echoed about the empty and softly lit ballroom. 

"You win. I'll dance," Alastor smirked, "But can you keep up?" 

"Oh it's on, Ginger!" Lucifer chuckled. 

"Then take it away, Fred." 

Astaire was a leader in his style, and Ginger a follower. Lucifer...there was that dominating presence again, that shine of confidence as they moved together, their footsteps and the song echoing around the room in tandem. It was one of the only times, Alastor thought, that he did not mind dancing in a style was more fluid, more of a matcher for his partner, and Lucifer's beat and energy was right on time with his. 

"Do you know round? How about swing?" Alastor tried a deviation from the movie routine and barely gave Lucifer time to adjust, but he caught on quickly, his deep laugh bouncing off the walls, then lost it just as fast but cracking up again as he tried to regain his balance. 

"Those are my feet you are trampling all over, sir," Alastor complained, catching Lucifer before he could stumble again and hit the floor. 

The music was reaching the faster part now, the bit that was full of thunderstorm noises and lightning, but they both were stationary- 

"Hah," Lucifer, still in Alastor's arms, looked up at him grinning, "A good dance partner you are not. Who throws styles all over the place like confetti?" 

"Hmm perhaps it's your fault for not reading my mind," Alastor responded. 

"Hey radio face, if I could read your mind, I'd have a whole lot of answers to a whole lot of questions I have right now." 

"Lucifer...shut up." 

"Make me," Lucifer challenged. 

Alastor kissed him. 

It was Lucifer's turn to make a noise of surprise and protest, to resist just the tiniest bit, push at Alastor's chest with his hands uselessly, then quickly melt...his lips were hot, and skilled, and now that Alastor was close to him again, he was detecting a soft sweet scent like perfume or shower soap.. 

Or..apples.

Just when Alastor wished it to go on further Lucifer drew them apart, whispering, his breath warm on his lips, and said, "Alastor...you're confusing the *shit* out of me right now." 

"Hmm...well," Alastor murmured, then grinned, "Payback's just an ornery old bitch, isn't it?"- he patted Lucifer's cheek sassily, "We should go and see what your daughter thinks of the room." 

With that, he left Lucifer behind, who was muttering some curse or other under his breath.

thank u guys for 100 followers!! it’s truly crazy to me how much traction my stuff has gotten (even tho in a bigger perspective it’s only a but bit its a lot to me). i always read fanfic when i was in middle school, then took a break, then started reading again in high school when i found the marauders and never thought i would actually write any. i only started writing about two months ago and i’m glad i’ve grown a following here :)

✨Talk Shop Tuesday✨ How about a self-rec mini-list of fics you had the most fun writing / your all time favorites to write and what you found most fun or love about each?

Sorry for the delay here! This is a big screen question (aka - I can't answer this from my phone, so had to be when I could sit down with my laptop).

The list got long, so I'm dropping it below the cut. I'm pulling my favs across the fandoms: Harry Potter, Bridgerton, Percy Jackson, The Vampire Diaries, and Wizards of Waverly Place. I'm going to use this formating.

Pairing Story: Summary What I like about it

Harry Potter

Gen How to Make a Horcrux: “I don’t know what terrible thing you’ve done to get assigned to my class,” a sharply dressed man said as he walked from the doorway to the desk in front of the lecture hall. The professor glanced at all of them from behind his glasses and placed his briefcase on the desk. Grabbing a piece of chalk, the professor turned to the board and wrote out “Four” with numbers 1-4 below it. What I like about it: This story had a nice well-rounded feel to it. It's basically a How to Get Away with Murder AU with Tom as the professor and a fun cast of clever individuals. It ignores canon and has a quasi-modern/fantastical feel to it.

Gen I made my family disappear: “What was that?” James thundered. “I wish that I didn’t have any family!” Harry yelled back. “Get out of my sight this instance!” James yelled. What I like about it: This is a Home Alone AU with a young Harry. While canon Harry starts as a child, I read so much fanfic with him as an adult that it took me a minute to get into his head as a child. It was fun to explore!

Gen The Maruader's Map: Fred and George Weasley are in trouble again. Naturally, they end up in Filch's office and spy something they want to take. Or how Fred and George got the Marauder's Map. Bonus! How they chose who to give the map to. What I like about it: This was one of the first things I wrote and I think that it still holds up! It fills a space that could exist in canon and I just love the ending twist!

Dramione Journaling: She needed to be reminded of the best parts of humanity in the world. That the war was over. There were no more death eaters. What I like about it: This was one of the first things I wrote that I felt was chilling and actually had a bit of a creepy tinge to it.

Bridgerton

Polin Emergence: Colin is a serial killer; Penelope is a murder mystery writer. Polinween Prompt: Dark AU What I like about it: I felt like this was a story where I really built out both Penelope and Colin's characterization in a unique way. By making them both much darker than I usually do, I got to play with themes and plot lines more than I expected when I started.

Polin It's like a million little stars (spelling out your name): It was a given that Colin Bridgerton saved a dance for Penelope Featherington at every ball because his mother asked him to. Or did she? What I like about it: This was before I really fell down the rabbithole that was my Bridgerton obsession (truly a Polin obsession) and I thought it had a really sweet spot in what I assumed was fanon at the time, and was sorta a concept that was a mix of canon and fanon.

Polin I dream of ...: Colin pulled an object out of a box in his attic. He didn’t know what it was. His hand swiped across the top to remove the layer of dust currently on it. What happened next changed the course of his life forever. What I like about it: This was so much fun to write. I don't know what happened, but I just picked up my journal and started handwriting this. It felt very symetrical and complete when I was done. I loved it.

Percy Jackson

Percabeth the kinda love that you only find once in a lifetime (the kind that you don't put down): What do you mean they aren’t college kids living life? Or the Percabeth college hockey AU soft moment that no one asked for … What I like about it: This just feels very realistic to me. Like it's just a soft moment that feels a little like a warm hug between a couple that loves each other and truly enjoys the small moments together too.

Percabeth Wreck My Plans (That's My Man): Annabeth has a plan to get Luke out of Olympus, she doesn’t need the son of Neptune to show up and wreck her plans. What I like about it: Something about this just feels hijinky and ridiculous fun - like watching an episode of White Collar or the movie Ocean's Eight. I don't know if that's what it feels like to read it, but that's how it felt to write it.

The Vampire Diaries

Klaroline get it off my desk: Closing her eyes to center herself, Bonnie breathed deeply to get a sense of his aura. “Vampire,” she breathed out. “What are the odds that the brother is human?” Caroline joked. “Not good, but let me confirm.” Bonnie smiled. She switched the photo she was holding. What I like about it: This was a story where I just was 'yes and'ing the plot and the background. Caroline as a serial killer? Yes. Is magic still a thing? Yes. Do Caroline and Klaus banter? Yes. It was just a really fun one.

Wizards of Waverly Place

Alex/Harper Deep Library Cuts: If you asked Alex’s high school teachers, they’d be shocked to learn that she was regarded as an extremely detail-oriented and historically accurate author. (Or the one where Alex is an author and Harper is her librarian best friend) What I like about it: I saw a tumblr post about Agatha Christie and something about it flicked a switch in my brain. 1300+ words later I'm making myself cry because Harper is validating Alex and then giving them a happy ending.

Can I say that I'm SO excited for this rec? It's always so much fun to host a guest in the library, and I have loved reaching out and making new connections with people I hadn't talked with before, but it's EXTRA fun when the reccer is already a friend AND when she recs a brilliant fic that I hadn't previously read! I don't know what else to say about this lovely writer than she's a wonderful and positive addition to our fandom, and a dear friend of mine. Without further ado, here is @nv-md to share our April Happy Hour Rec!

On a normal day, my inbox is not usually a source of joy. Bills, ads, work, and more ads, means that I spend most of my time avoiding emails at all costs.

However, an email from AO3 brings me nothing but joy.

An email that one of my favorite authors has written another seven thousand words (that I get to savor for free in the middle of the produce section while ignoring the poor man behind me who just wants to buy squash)? 

Well, there’s no greater joy than that.

And I’ll be taking zero comments at this time about how much I rely on fanfic for serotonin.

So, onto the fic in question!

I cannot recommend InnerLilith’s work enough. Like honestly, all of her fics are bangers and you should feel free to stop looking at this post to go and read them all right this moment. But, if you want to stick around, I’d love to tell you about ‘I’m lying when I’m looking away’.

I'm lying when I'm looking away by InnerLilith (6,757 words, rated E)

Sometimes it takes a Purim party and a flapper dress for Harry to figure out what he likes. (Spoiler: He likes Malfoy.)

This fic features: Jewish holidays and traditions, Draco in a flapper dress, flustered Harry, hilarious banter, meaningful discussions about gender norms, the smuttiest smut that ever smutted, and a soft ending that melted my heart.

I fell into this story headfirst and it was nothing but delightful from start to finish.

Harry’s POV is perfect. He’s a goddamn mess, has no idea which way is up, and waxes poetic about Draco’s legs and skin and lips and collarbones, and generally makes a fool of himself in front of all of his friends. Classic Harry James Potter behavior that I will never get enough of.

“Then he was striding over, all that leg just exposed, so Harry could see the muscles shifting with each step, the ripple of satin over his hinging joints, the soft, dark promise of what hid underneath.”

Draco is cool and confident (omg the snark), his legs are long, his dress is short, and I love him as much as Harry does. Honestly, I think about Draco in a flapper dress at least once a day.

“Malfoy certainly seemed to think nothing of it, sauntering around like he was born in that flapper dress. And maybe that’s what the big deal was for Harry, actually—how Malfoy acted like it wasn’t a big deal at all, and how he was right.”

Everyone is at the Purim party, including our beloved Fred (who lives), and they all make cameos as they watch Harry drool over Draco. If I tried to include all my favorite parts, then I would just have to copy the entire fic into this rec, but just know, the gang’s all here and it’s wonderful and brilliant. Lilith nails each voice, their costumes are hysterical (I will never recover from Luna as a demiguise), and I wish I was cool enough to be invited to their party.

In between eating hamantaschen and celebrating with wine, Harry and Draco circle each other all night. They’re not enemies, but it’s clear they don’t quite know how to be friends either, and they’re so obviously into each other that you can’t help but root for them to figure it out. There’s just enough ‘will they or won’t they’ to keep you on the edge of your seat and to make the ending that much more satisfying. Then—

THE SMUT! 

That’s all I can say about that because you need to read it yourself—it is delicious—but here’s a little teaser.

“Harry tugged his clothes off frantically, and when Draco brought a hand to the straps of his dress, slanting his brow in a question, Harry said, leave it, leave it, and his voice sounded cracked and desperate.”

This fic has it all and you will not regret one moment spent in this world. I wish that we could gather around a table, drinking and eating and laughing and talking about this fic. Since we can’t do that, please read it and then come and yell at me about it.

aaaaand FINALLY I've finished writing up my next few recs for the Summer @ficreadingchallenge :'DDD Most of these I read weeks ago when I was especially tired and just wanted to lie down and listen to some podfics, as you'll see below~ But I'm still going! I got sooo close to finishing a line this time (and I WOULD HAVE if I hadn't swapped around the squares for some of these hahaha) and if possible I want to complete a full blackout! n.n

A couple of prompt-related rambles: 'Enemies to Friends / Lovers' is highlighted buuut I actually later decided to use that fic for 'Future AU' so. Oh well :') I also swapped a fic from Domestic to Gift Giving even though gifts aren't the main focus because I was having trouble with that square and the gifts ARE still a pretty big part of the fic so??? who cares hahaha. Also somehow I've gotten this far using a different pairing for every single square and I was absolutely tempted to try to continue that, and am knocking myself out of it because I just want to encourage myself to read fic, not force myself into a pretzel trying to track down rarepair fics that SHOULD exist SOMEWHERE......

Canon Compliant

This is a super fascinating fic and a great example of one of my favourite genres: crack treated seriously! In this one, the music videos exist in-universe and the prisoners (plus Es) will watch them all, reacting and responding in-character. I love how committed the author is to this premise: some of the characters would rather forget all this stuff is even happening, while others (most notably Kotoko) fully intend to learn all they can about the other prisoners from them. It’s still early days, but I can’t wait to see how they all react differently, and what (correct or incorrect!) conclusions they come to! (Also, maybe it seems strange to use an AU fic for the tag ‘Canon Compliant’, but the fic is sticking to the canonically-chosen verdicts which is why it counts!)

Fic With No Comments Yet

messin’ up my mind by Skyrose – a podfic by CailynWrites (5k, 33:47, Percy/Oliver)

Choosing podfics for the ‘No Comments Yet’ category almost feels like cheating heh, but these very important fan works deserve just as much love!!! This is an adorable fic: stories where the characters’ friends/family ‘ship them’ can be corny and OOC, but I love that Fred and George initially just want to give Oliver something to care about other than Quidditch training, and have no clue the cogs they started working in Oliver’s head until they’re ready for that last push. And I love Oliver and Percy’s relationship: not quite close, comfortable friends, but more like very different people who’ve spent a lot of time together and never quite taken the plunge in becoming fixtures of one another’s life – yet. <3

Hurt/Comfort

The Care and Feeding of a Deeply Depressed Vampire [Podfic] by secretsofluftnarp, read by Pandamug (2.8k, 21:16, Nandor/Guillermo

Fics that perfectly capture the absurd black humour of this show are always a treat and this fic is no exception! One of the tags is ‘canon-typical sex talk’ and hoo BOY is that accurate haha, but beneath the characteristic horniness and always-at-least-mild insufferability, Nandor really is just a pathetic sad little vampire, and the degree of care Guillermo has for him – and how much Nandor trusts him in return – is so sweet!

BIPOC Character

[Podfic] The Benefits of Communication written by ushauz, voiced by GodOfLaundryBaskets (3.2k, 27:27, Wyll/Astarion)

I’m still dipping my toes into Wyll/Astarion fanfic, but this was a very nice introduction!! Despite focusing on Astarion’s trauma around sex, it also gets a bit into Wyll’s complicated relationship with it as well, in a way that totally makes sense for them! I absolutely love and 100% recommend this entire series of RJK fics – they capture the characters and their relationship absolutely perfectly, and the familial interactions ring so true! I particularly loved Roy’s complicated relationship to the holidays; feeling troubled by his own lack of enthusiasm towards what should be ‘his’ celebrations, and only realising in retrospect that he really had enjoyed his time taking part in it all with his partners. Despite being longer than all the other fics I’ve recced here so far, the time absolutely blazed by, because it all flowed so smoothly and once I started reading I didn’t want to stop! <3

Ugh, this fic hits so hard. :( With its succinct writing we really get a sense of how hard Sirius tries, over and over, to save everyone. It’s almost like poetry – especially at the end, which really made me cry!! ;__;

HELLO I HAVE SO MANY OPINIONS ON THIS MAN

Probably too many opinions to fit in one ask!! To be honest!! I don't even really know why I imprinted on Fred so hard. It was the meme quote and the horse backflipping at first but at some point it became genuine fhdsjkfhds

Given that Fred strikes me as one of the older members of the cast his ship options were a bit limited for me lmao. But I ended up going with Fred/Cherche in my playthrough, and I stand by that! They don't have the most exciting support chain, I suppose, but there's so much mutual respect there. They meet each other on even footing in so many respects, and their S support feels like a very natural extension of the supports before it. Idk it's just cozy. They'll terrorize new recruits together forevermore.

Though I could easily leave him single, too. He strikes me as acespec, and while he can be a sap in S supports I also think he could be perfectly content never having a romantic partner. Maybe's that's me projecting but eh.

Some other opinions that I may elaborate on sometime include

I may not consider the spotpass chapters canon but I WILL NEVER RECOVER FROM HIS IN-BATTLE CONVERSATION WITH EMMERYN. I AM INCONSOLABLE...

I know we all joke about his out of left field arson streak but LISTEN. LISTEN TO ME. THAT CAN BE SO COMPELLING IF YOU TAKE IT SERIOUSLY FOR A SECOND. He may not necessarily have full blown pyromania, but if you humour that he might... Pyromania is an impulse control disorder. And often for someone with pyromania the starting of fires is a way to release tension or anxiety. Do you see how interesting this could be combined with how neurotically worried he is about the safety of his people, and how rigidly he controls himself, and how he keeps himself busy literally every single waking moment?

Between the potential pyromania (often caused by childhood abuse and neglect??? hello??) and the wolf attack trauma and the fact that he's now the razor-witted right hand of the goddamn prince, I'm super interested in this man's backstory. And the fact that 90% of the content we have about him is variations on being comedically overprotective of the royal siblings pains me sometimes. I love how ridiculous he is too, and I know flanderization is the curse all fire emblem side characters bear, but you can't just put these interesting breadcrumbs in front of me and expect me NOT to want to eat the loaf of bread they came from! I'm over here having to re-engineer this bread recipe my damn self! Give me the forbidden Fred lore intsys!

Frederick and Robin enemies to besties arc is criminally underutilized in fanfic and I need this problem resolved yesterday.

The fact that Frederick and Validar share their english voice actor is criminally underutilized in fanfic. We can use this as an excuse to make them sound similar in-universe! We can do angst with this, people!

The fact that his main hobbies are knitting and mushroom picking is adorable, actually. He's like if a grandma was capable of felling entire armies with a greataxe.

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

Just one, it's old and unimportant. I'm actually about to private it as I no longer like writing fanfic for real people.

2. what's your total AO3 word count?

Since I don't really post to AO3, I'm going to try to guess my word count from Word.

I would guess, just knowing the size of some of my larger works and how many things I fucking have in there, it would be at least 500k. Probably more. Y'all see the length of shit I post and I don't have nearly everything posted.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

It's no where close to the end, but just for what I have planned, I think my angstiest thing will be "Dragon of Valhalla".

What I have planned for the future of Out of Time is probably the happiest. Mostly because that is my "fix it fic".

Although when I post Alisanne's fic, that will get happy ending. Also a fix it fic.

I've not received hate, thankfully, of any sort.

Yes! Maybe not well. But I do write it.

"Dragon of Valhalla". It's combining a fantasy show, a historical fiction drama show, and a historical fiction fantasy video game. Truly, the deepest of brainrots.

I think I can "emotion" really well. Make you understand it as a reader, make you feel it, without necessarily giving a name to it.

Probably, legitimately, "Out of Time". It was my first genuine dance into HoTD fandom creating. It was my first idea in years.

I had originally written it as an Alisanne fanfiction, actually. But I didn't think anyone would read OC content and so I made it x reader, and lost passion for it in the process.
