It's weird being queer and the child of immigrants sometimes.

I hear my family and other Hispanic immigrants in my life talk about how this country is going to shit because of gay people, because of trans people, because of people who are asking for basic human rights. And they tell me those people are wrong, that, those people are brainwashing the youth and ruining what's left of this country. That eventually, they are going to have to deal with another corrupt government. Not because of the increasing legislature against these people, no, because these people are out and loud and converting everyone, manipulating everyone.

And I know they are wrong, but then I remember that I didn't grow up like they did. I didn't have to grow up in poverty, I didn't have to hide my true feelings against the government, and I didn't have to leave a dictatorship. I know they are wrong, but then I remember that my family comes from Cuba, and many of my extended family members are Venezuelan. I remember seeing Maduro's regime on the news which was only followed up by Chavez. I remember when I was a kid and my Nicaraguan friend told me about the political situation going on at the time. And I am very well aware of how all Latino countries have had to deal with political turmoil, and while it might not be true for all Latin American countries present, I know it applies to many if not most of them. I know they are wrong, but then I remember how people who are being brainwashed never know they're being brainwashed. ANYONE CAN BE BRAINWASHED. NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO BECOMING BRAINWASHED. I know they are wrong, but they tell me to just listen to them... What if, I am wrong, what if I am being manipulated, what if they are right? That "the left is manipulating everyone and destroying everything." I mean, they HAVE to be right? Right? They are the go-to people for knowledge on dictatorships. They know what a corrupt government looks like, I'm just a sheltered little kid who got to grow up in a good country. But then I look and I see that it's Black people being hurt, Trans people being hurt, Disabled people being hurt, and other fucking Latinos being hurt. AND I KNOW THEY ARE WRONG.

Sometimes I feel like I don't know what to trust. Because my family and I can both agree that terrible shit is happening in this country, but for completely opposite reasons. I feel like they should be right, their background should mean they know what the dictatorship looks like, and they tell that me too. Right now, the US is still better than the countries my family members have had to flee. I mean hell, the fact that I can post this on the internet is a testament to the fact that maybe this isn't a dictatorship yet. But that doesn't mean that a lot of concerning shit has not happened.

I don't want to end in a pessimistic tone, things are not far gone, and things can change. I know people are fighting against all the anti-trans legislation and some battles have been won! We have to have hope, because without hope, what's the point in fighting. I just wanted to write about the weird experience of witnessing your family experience the worse cognitive dissonance ever, and how it clashes specifically with their past. I hope this made some sense and I hope this was relatable to someone.
