it also occurred to me like yesterday that in my kali/sil fic I’ve been writing I think I like, focused so hard on figuring out characterization and relationship dynamic accuracy and also just fighting for my life with the plot that I believe I neglected to like. Mention silvers sleepy boy situation like,,, at all. Maybe once offhandedly??? Like I didn’t forget it’s a part of him but I think somehow I just forgot to work it into the fic at all when it’s generally a pretty big part of his character 😭😭😭 like maybe it’s bc we’ve been in book 7 and it hasn’t come up in the dream zone (I forget if he mentioned if he’s just not sleepy boy in the dream realms, probably lol) so maybe that’s why I forgot??? But even then I literally went to some of the vignettes to study how he talks with kalim and the sleepies does come up in those examples….. I feel like it’s just something I was like “yeah yeah that’s a given I need to figure out the rest of him rn tho cuz he’s more than just a sleepy guy” so hard that it slipped my mind completely….. I went too hard in the other direction….

⭐ At first he comes off as quiet and aloof to your family but they slowly take a liking to him. You realize how good of a narrator Xavier is when you see your family members sitting around him in circles at night as he weaves magical tales about princes from distant planets.

⭐ He's a curious kitty. He buys himself flyers about the local specialties of your hometown, and even books tickets to all the historical sites he'd like to visit with you. He enjoys hearing myths about the deities of your lands.

⭐ He loves the food! Every time he experiences a new flavour or spice, you see his eyes light up in delight. He asks help from your mother and other family ladies to help him with some recipes because he wants to cook you some of your hometown food. And all the ladies are swooning. He also enjoys the occasional gossip with them.

⭐ His eyes seem to follow your every move when he sees you dancing. He's recorded a bunch of videos but if asked to join, he's quite hesitant. Though the moment you drag him on the dance floor, he complies. Might step on your foot once or twice, and feel embarrassed about it but overall, he's a fast learner.

❄️ He doesn't speak your language but he's very keen on learning from you. You deliberately make him say the cheesiest stuff in your language, sometimes even a little naughty things. And when he sees you giggling, he chuckles and calls you childish for pulling such pranks on him.

❄️ Your family immediately takes a liking to him. He's responsible and dependable, and they are happy that you have someone so reliable by your side. They also come to take his advice on every little health related thing when they learn he's a doctor. But they also make a lot of health jokes with him because he's easy to tease.

❄️ He loves hearing about your culture. He complies when you make him try on some of the traditional outfits for men, and is quite pleased to know that you find him even more handsome in them. And he's left awestruck when he sees you in your traditional clothes.

❄️ Zayne does enjoy the variety of flavors in your culture’s food. Though he's even more eager to try out the local sweet dishes. He loves how the recipe varies from hand to hand, and in every household. And he likes the differing tastes of the same sweets.

🐦‍⬛ Your family is suspicious about his overall persona but soon realize he's quite alright. They are thrilled by the fact that he can sing, and he is definitely pushed by the elders into singing at the family gathering. At least 4 of your cousins have a crush on him.

Unraveled: B&N Virtual Event Summary

There are no unraveled spoilers; since we're re-covering a period of time we've already seen, there are references to specific events in Stellarlune

Shannon Messenger was accompanied by B.B. Alston, author of Amari and the Night Brothers, who asked the questions

Enjoy! (Quil note: this might be one of the best ones, lads 👀)

Shannon has pre-release jitters. Even though she's done this so many times, she'll never not be nervous

It's a different book with a different POV. She's just as excited as she is panicked. "I contain multitudes!"

Why is this 9.5 instead of 10? Why a Keefe book? Is this part of a bigger story or just a fun bonus? It's a little of both. Keefe fans are gonna love a whole book about him, but Shannon never would have taken attention away from the main story if it wasn't essential for the series, since everyone's anxious for book 10.

Be patient! She's never written a 10 book series before. She's "trying to build a bridge while crossing it."

Keefe wasn't just eating human food having fun, though Shannon would've written 800 pages of snacking if she could.

What he got up to Shannon planned/outlined that it would all come out in book 9 when he was back, but, "No, Keefe is not ready to share these secrets. There's reasons why he's gonna keep this hidden."

"That's a problem for future Shannon!"

But then everything future Shannon tried with book 10 didn't quite work. This is Keefe's story, and KOTLC is limited to Sophie.

In order for Sophie to know, Keefe would have to sit down and talk it out with everyone, and he wasn't quite ready to do that when Shannon needed him to.

So, special 9.5! So we can live that time with Keefe, see what he does, where he goes, who he meets, what he uncovers.

This way readers will be much more familiar with it when we get to all that in book 10--for the first time ever, readers will actually know more than Sophie!

Shannon confirms we're getting Keefe's middle name--she debated with herself, thought about keeping that secret forever, but she wants there to be big pay-offs in Unraveled. And what book could be more perfect for this?

Was it hard to write from Keefe's POV? Usually his voice comes super easily, so Shannon was expecting it to be word-vomit. But throughout the book and especially at the beginning, he's not himself. Everything he's been through has changed him, made him afraid of himself, more quiet and reserved. How does she balance making this interesting when her jokester character won't talk!

It was interesting diving into his head to see where he's at and why he's acting different. And it was interesting flipping it--Sophie's a fish out of water in the Lost Cities, but this time Keefe's the fish!

She had to keep reminding herself all this stuff familiar to her is new to him. "Flaming Hot Cheetos??? Is that food...????"

How has Keefe changed the most since book 1? In some ways he's lost his confidence. He's discovered a lot that's made him question if he's good, if he's causing problems, if he's putting people at risk. In his head he's not nearly as much the casual, lighthearted guy he seems.

He's also matured. He really had to step up and say, "Okay, it's time to take action. I can't just goof around. I've got the fate of the world on my shoulders in some way too." He's also trying to protect his friends and feels very personally responsible. His burden is a lot heavier than it used to be.

What's his favorite part of the human world? He definitely enjoys the human pop culture. Seeing how humans depict elves, certain (not all) human foods.

Lot of fun for Shannon as a snacker, but he's vegetarian, which makes it harder. He can't have fried chicken--but not every scene is about food.

Any places Shannon knew she had to send Keefe? She prefers to write places she's been if possible; in fantasy, if you can get the real accurate, it makes the fantastical that much more believable. So she started with places she's been, but she hasn't been nearly enough to cover all this. So she included places she'd like to, places she knows other people have been so she can get details from them.

(itty bitty seriously small spoiler from Shannon) Keefe starts looking for libraries, so Shannon googled cool libraries and went down that rabbit hole.

Keefe's been crushing on Sophie since the moment they met. What's does he like the most about her? (Lot of hearts in chat). "Keefe appreciates that Sophie is such a different perspective. He really sees that she doesn’t necessarily see herself accurately, but he understands her. He can see why she’s harder on herself with her upbringing, the bad thoughts she heard. He realized she doesn’t always understand herself."

He’s also really impressed by how brave and strong she is, and how she’s willing to risk her life and do the thing when everyone's like Sophie don't do the thing! And she’s like I must do the thing! Keefe thinks, “Wow can’t stop her from doing the thing!" It'd be great if she stopped ending up in the healing center, but he appreciates her for doing it despite the consequences. Admires her for it. He really wants to be worthy of how amazing he thinks she is. (More hearts in chat)

Can we confirm Keefe's POV of the kiss? Yes! Shannon almost wasn't able to do it. Unraveled was supposed to release November 12, but then her kids, "caught every possible virus they could possibly catch." Plus, publishing takes time, so they had to move it back. Those extra days allowed her to squeeze in the bonus story and she had a lot of fun writing it.

She knew she couldn't continue the book past when he leaves the human world, but she knew readers would really want it. She understands if you skip to the end to read it first--and there shouldn't be too many spoilers if you do, but she still recommends going from the beginning.

Why did it take Sophie and Keefe so long to get to the kiss? Did you know it would be in Stellarlune or did it happen naturally? Shannon tries not to pre-plan emotional things because it makes it feel forces. As the author she's in charge of the plot, not the emotions. Every time Sophie almost dies, that's her, but how Sophie feels about almost dying is all Sophie.

So anything emotional like this, Shannon's checking in with Sophie, and, "She really wasn't ready to see this was an option for her--she really was in the Great Foster Oblivion. She had no idea that Keefe liked her, and she wasn't the type to start developing feelings without having that piece of the puzzle. She genuinely thought Keefe was just teasing and was a flirt with everything. She didn't think it was something to take seriously."

She also had her eye on someone else for quite some time, so the story had to wait until Sophie was ready to take that step. Shannon discussed it with her editor a lot

Every week they have a zoom meeting to talk through the plot. They thought Stellarlune was probably the book for the kiss, but Shannon didn't know for sure until she got to that chapter. She's very proud of Sophie for being brave enough to take that step and bring the walls down.

The fact it took so long and tortured readers wasn't on purpose--"Torturing my readers is fun, but I wouldn't do it unnecessarily!"

It was interesting going back to write the kiss from Keefe's POV. She was worried as she did that though Sophie was ready for it now, what if Keefe wasn't? But, "then it was like oh, no, nope he’s on the same page." Keefe was screaming "FINALLY!!!" in his head.

How different is KOTLC now from how you first imagined it? The problem they're dealing with is fundamentally built into their world--it's not just an evil villain who decided to take over. "Multiple rebellions are going on because there are some fundamental injustices that have been ignored and ignored and ignored. And two groups have said enough is enough."

She always knew they'd have to reckon with this--in some ways they have, but there's more to come. But she also always leaves room for ideas to grow. Her first ideas aren't her best; they're too obvious. Now she's had a lot of time to think Keeper through.

Even still, she worries about doing it justice and, even with a plan, never knows for sure what will happen until she sits down to write it.

Shannon returned the question to B.B. He said the same thing--at a certain point as the story grows, you can really do so many more things, you have so many more villains. It builts the characters and relationships.

Shannon takes a moment to recommend B.B.'s series, Amari and the Night Brothers. She can't sing it's praise enough. "After you race through Unraveled, race through this!" There are 3 books out with 2 more to come. Maybe more.

10 books is a lot--how does Shannon do it? This is part of why she has those weekly zoom chats. But she's constantly going back to look things up, making lists of unanswered questions, listening to the audiobooks. It's all daunting. "It's all chaotic. Wonderful, glorious chaos. That's what I'm telling myself."

Readers are anxious to get back to Keefe and Fitz. How awkward would a conversation be now? Oh yeah. They've had to be around each other since all of that, but that haven't had to openly acknowledge it. But Shannon can feel the scene on the horizon and can't avoid it forever--though Keefe would love to. "Peace out!" Given Fitz's temper, Shannon fully expects there to be yelling, but sometimes he surprised her. We'll see once she gets there.

When Shannon gets too specific in outline, it sucks the life out of her story. She needs to know the rough order of the plot--this threat, then this thing, this this reveal. But the little emotional beats are more up to the characters. Talks this through with her editor too.

Can you tell us anything about book 10? Would love to be like it exists and it's coming out tomorrow! Sadly, still writing it and doesn't know the exact release date. She promises she'll get it to us as soon as she can. Obviously we left Stellarlune on a huge cliffhanger and Unraveled answers some questions but doesn't deal with it at all.

"Keefe's secrets...secrets do have a way of coming out." He can't hide them forever and it'll take something big to motivate him to come clean. "Wow, that's the most non-answer. I swear answers are coming!"

Is there any news on the movie? Earlier this year they announced Warner Brothers got the rights and Emma Watts is the producer. Currently Emma is working hard to get everything behind the scenes in a row to give the movie the best possible chance it has to get greenlit and made since it'll be so expensive.

Shannon thinks this team is one of their best shots at it happening. There's still a bit of finger crossing, but it anyone can make it work, it's Emma Watts.

Shannon is NOT writing the screen play. She's got book 10 to write, plus she doesn't think she can be objective about the changes that'd need to be made to adapt it. She's too attached. She wants to give input and suggestions, but wants something with more screenwriting expertise and distance from the story.

B.B. doesn't want to write his screenplay either--it's a totally different skill.

What's your best advice for new writers? Ooh, okay. 9 times out of 10 when a young writers asks for advice, Shannon asks "Have you written your book yet?" And the answer is no. They're just thinking about writing a book. So her advice: focus on writing! Finish that book! You can't be a writer unless you write! Then revise and revise and revise. "The work is not done when you get to the end."

When you have the best book you could possibly have, then think about next steps and publishing. But for now...write!

Shannon returned the question to B.B., who says to read widely. Read as much as you can to build up your story skills. Find what you like. As KOTLC readers, we've seen in the story how to develop characters and plots and arcs.

He also says don't put pressure on yourself. Write for the fun of writing, so even if it never goes anywhere, you still have something you're proud of.

"Once it's a job it's a job. It's different."

Shannon doesn't find books on writing helpful for her; they're procrastination. Instead she reads and asks herself what's working and why--why am I enjoying this so much?

She learned the most from books she didn't like. She asked herself why she wasn't into it--which doesn't mean there was anything wrong with it. It was personal preference, which helped her find her writing voice. She likes a lot of dialogue, a lot of humor, cliffhangers, etc.

School may ask you to read things you don't like; as a writer, take it as an opportunity to pick it apart and find out why.

How do you come up with character names? Baby name books. By the time she had to name her own kids, she was already an expert. She likes names to match the character.

Sophie was going to be named Alexandra because it means helped and defender of mankind, but it was too on the nose. She wasn't an Alex, or Alexis, or even an Alexandra

Sophie means wisdom, which is what she gives to her world. "No pressure, right?"

Fitz is from Fitzroy, which means son of the king, and his family is almost like royalty.

"Keefe means handsome. *shrugs* So. Obvious there." The book she got it from said "good-looking one" specifically.

It's the same for B.B. He likes to look at the year the character was born and what was popular, too. Amari means inner strength, and a big part of her story is learning she's more than where she's from and to believe in herself

How does it feel to write from a new POV? Would we maybe get a Fitz book? Shannon's learned to never say never. The story could throw her another curve ball, she might do a short story in his POV. If the story dictates she needs to step into anyone else's shoes, she will. "I've gotten this far by trusting the story."

Who was Shannon's favorite author/book when she was 12? Shannon grew up before the big children's media boom, she she didn't have a lot of options. She did like the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

"You have no idea how lucky you are there's so many great stories out there. Different POVs, more characters that look like more people--though still need more work on that front."

For B.B., he was a huge fan of Charlie and the Chocolate factory--but he also didn't have much to pick from.

When Shannon was around 12, she also fell out of love with reading. She had a 7th grade teacher who was very strict about reading "at your level." And she decided Shannon was at college level, so kept giving her older books like Crime and Punishment, Little Women, etc.

While Shannon appreciates the classics, they weren't what she wanted to read, and it turned it into a chore. She went from a kid who took stacks home from the library to someone who only read if it was an assignment. (Shocked faces in chat).

Shannon firmly believes in letting your kids read what they want. That doesn't mean don't encourage them to broaden their horizons, but don't take away things they love. That's how you kill someone's love of reading.

B.B. gives props to Shannon for the female main character; it's one of the reasons Amari can exists--"well Shannon did it and it worked."

Shannon's very glad Amari exists. Keeper got a lot of rejections with coded wording that made it very clear female main characters were not as marketable as boy heroes. And she wasn't an instant success--it took about 5 books to gain momentum, and a lot of that was teachers, librarians, book sellers, and the kids themselves telling their friends to read it.

Any info on the graphic novel? Part 2 is definitely coming and in the works, it just takes time. She's seen some tentative cover sketches, might see more soon, and is very excited.

Team Fitz or Team Keefe? Even though Shannon's written a whole book from Keefe's POV *she holds it up backwards, then upside down, then gets it right* and has a Keefe cutout in the corner *moves the camera so we can see him--he was gonna be in the background but it looked creepy*, she truly is Team Sophie. If she ever got a tattoo, it's say Team Sophie. But she's terrified of needles so never will.

People think they kissed so it's settled, right? "Well, the series isn't done yet. Sophie could change her mind." This goes back to what Shannon talked about with letting the characters dictate the emotions.

What first inspired Keeper? A lot of things. Hilariously, it started as a short story. Epic fail--she's what, 8,000 pages into her short story? She was working on a different book and got stuck, so decided to get to know a side character.

The side character she chose was Fitz. For some reason, she doesn't know why, the plot was he'd meet a little girl and realize she was an elf.

But "Guess what, you're an elf!" was a terrible ending and she couldn't stop thinking about it. What happened to that little girl? How could she not know she was an elf? Why would they hide her?

A few weeks later she knew "yeah, I gotta switch books." She couldn't get it out of her head, but it was daunting because she knew it would be a massive project. But that little girl would not go away.

What was the inspiration for Amari? Doing pre-med stuff is long and boring, so he was looking for something fun. He thought about Men in Black and what if there were supernatural creatures living amongst us. He was working on the world and one day Amari popped into existence.

Has Shannon ever made the Keeper recipes and what's her family's favorite? Shannon actually developed the recipes herself, which wasn't something she ever thought she'd have to do. It took a lot of baking fails, but her favorite is anything mallowmelt--but she always warns people it's SO sweet. Good, but a few bites is enough sugar for a week.

Planning any non-Keeper series? Shannon doesn't know what she'll do once she's done with KOTLC. She'll definitely keep writing because she loves telling stories, but she's so immersed in Keeper all her other ideas are on the back burner.

The amount you’d laughed in the past hour had not only stained your cheeks a permanent shade of pink but also left a sizable ache in your chest with each breath. But you couldn’t help the giggles that bubbled out of your mouth every time you looked at the boy next to you. 

Still wearing his pajamas- it was nearing three in the morning after all- but covered in glitter and entangled with the streamers the two of you had been attempting to use to decorate the common room. 

Halloween parties were always a big deal at Hogwarts- one of the only days out of the year where all four houses had parties going on simultaneously- which meant it had to be “the biggest party to ever grace the foundations of this castle”, according to Sirius. 

So that’s how you ended up on the floor of the Gryffindor common room at the ungodly hour trying to charm the streamers to play a haunting orchestral tune every time someone walked through any of the three exits of the room. Your hair was messy and you were clad in just one of Sirius’ t-shirt and your pajama shorts, but every time Sirius glanced at you, he saw the prettiest thing he’d ever seen. 

“Lovey,” he chirped, gaining your attention from the other side of the room. “How’s this look?”

He’d managed to string the meshy paper in a way that made it appear to be the 3-D mane of the lion portrait on the wall. There was that laugh again, rising from your stomach and dancing off your lips as you saw how proud he looked. 

“It’s wonderful,” you said, smiling wide at him. Glitter smeared onto his cheekbone made his face gleam in the moonlight coming in through the arching windows, looking more elegant than ever, even in his somewhat disheveled state. 

He turned back to his work, hands on hips, and appeared to be contemplating. 

“I want this all to be scarier,” he said, waving his arms around. “Like… I dunno, not the Shrieking Shack- don’t want to freak out Moony- but like creepy, y’know?” 

“You want it to be like a muggle haunted house?” you spoke up, standing from your spot on the floor. 

“A muggle one? They have those?” 

“Well, they’re not real,” you shrugged, trying to find the best way to describe this to your never-left-the-wizarding-world boyfriend. “It’s just people in costumes and decorations. Maybe lighting and music.” He snapped his fingers like he’d just put all the pieces together. 

“Lighting, that’s it,” he said, seeming to spring up a bit in a way that made you wonder how he had any energy left at the current hour. “You’re a genius, love.”

His praise fell on pink ears as you couldn’t help but admire him again. His dark curls tangled with itself and a stray streamer that somehow found itself in there, his brow tense with concentration as he read spells and incantations from the book in his right hand with his wand in the other, the sliver of pale skin peeking out from beneath the hem of his shirt. All of it. All of him. 

You loved all of him. 

By the time he’d finished enchanting all the lamps to flicker and all the candles to periodically fizzle out, he found his way back over to you. You’d laid yourself out on the couch, the lack of sleep starting to get to you, and gave him a sleepy smile as he flung himself down next to you.

“Thank you for your help,” he said, the two of you squished in tight as to not have him fall off. “And for staying up with me.” He left out a huff of faux frustration. “Since none of the lads wanted to.” You couldn’t help but laugh again at his theatrics. 

“Well, you did promise to keep me entertained,” you teased, twisting one of his curls around your finger and letting it spring free. 

“And did I?” His grin was big and giddy, sometimes he still couldn’t believe he’d gotten lucky enough as to have you. To have you all to himself. 

You hummed, pretending to think. His smile dropped in mock-offense and he pressed a hand to his chest. The move was awkward with how close together you two were again, but it made you laugh nonetheless. 

“How dare you, I’ll have you know, most people find me very entertaining,” he said in  faux offense. You raised an eyebrow. 

“Do they now?” You tried to keep the smile off your lips as you spoke. 

“Yes, loads of them,” he said. “People have lots of good things to say about me.”

“Oh really? Like what?”

“That I’m the fittest boy in our year, I’m the funniest person in all of Hogwarts, and that I’ve got the coolest witch in all of Britain.” He seemed proud of himself for the not so subtle redirection. 

“Sounds about right,” you grinned at him, shifting in your spot on your side to lazily throw one of your arms over his torso.

You and Soap had been friends for quite some time. From the very beginning of training, you met at the enlistment office and were officially introduced to each other at the cafeteria after training. You became inseparable best friends. Even after getting recruited into Task Force 141 for being the best of the best in your class, you both shared laughs over the callsigns that seemed to fit you perfectly.

Soap and Viper—you were known for your fast reflexes and sharp hits, using the knife like a snake would to strike its opponent. Your callsign truly described you.

You were accurate and good at your job; you got what you always dreamed of, but... you ended up developing feelings for the young Scotsman. It made you feel soft around him. You tried to hide it for a long time, convincing yourself it was just a small crush. But as months passed, your feelings only grew stronger. You couldn’t help but admire the way he fixed his hair, the icy blue of his eyes, and the way his muscles flexed when he moved. You even memorized the sound of his footsteps.

You tried to find flaws about him, hoping to discourage yourself from liking the Scottish lad. You told yourself his voice was annoying—nope. His accent was hot. He was short—nope. He was the perfect height for you. He was disorganized—nope. He may toss his stuff into bins, but he kept it neat. You... you couldn’t find a flaw.

One night, after a rough mission, you and the team decided to grab drinks. While drinking, the others wandered off to watch a soccer game on TV, leaving you and Johnny by the axe-throwing area, talking about home, favorite foods, and everything in between. The whiskey loosened your tongue, making it easier to say what you really wanted to say without hesitation. You both took turns throwing axes, but neither of you hit a bullseye.

As the conversation turned to a sensitive subject, Johnny kept pushing for an answer, despite your attempts to wave it off.

"Why don’t ye get with anyone? I’ve never seen ye go out on a date. Come on, don’t give me that busy nonsense," he laughed. "It almost seems like—"

Your mind was too clouded to think of a filter, and you didn’t want to hide it anymore, so you snapped.

"Johnny... just shut up! Shut UP! It’s because I wanted it to be you... I wanted it to be you so much..." you said, looking at him with a serious expression before you realized what you just said.

You shook your head. "Forget what I said. I’m going home." You prepped to leave, tossing the axe one last time. To both your and Johnny’s surprise, it hit bullseye.

He looked at you with wide eyes, shock and speechlessness washing over him. He wanted to go after you and ask about it, but he knew you needed your space. He stared at his unfinished glass of scotch and sighed, his mind foggy. All he could think about was you.

He nursed his drink, gulping, recalling how many times you were there when he needed someone. When he was injured, you were there. When he couldn’t sleep or when nightmares haunted him, you were there. He thought about the moments when he smiled just hearing your voice through the radio, the sound of your laughter in response to his corny dad jokes, or when he was goofing around when Price wasn’t looking—you were always there. He realized the girl he always wanted was with him all along—the girl he always said he was waiting for.

He shook his head, running his hands over his face, feeling stupid for not seeing it. "Why didn’t I see it?" Johnny mumbled. That’s when Price came and sat beside him, noticing Johnny’s slumped shoulders.

"What’s botherin’ you lad?" he asked.

Johnny sighed, dropping his hands. "What would ye do, Price, when ye’re too blind to see the right person was right in front of ye and ye messed it up?" he asked, like a kid would to a father.

Price smiled, patting his shoulder. "Let me guess... Viper?"

Johnny looked at him in surprise and nodded. "Ye knew?"

Price nodded. "Aye, the whole team does. Even Laswell caught the heart eyes when she’s rarely with us. The two are like two puzzles that wouldn’t stop spinnin’ and wouldn’t piece together."

Johnny sighed. "Why didn’t ye tell me?"

Price looked at him. "Because we wanted ye to figure it out on your own. Yer a demolition expert; ye catch clues quick, but this... you never figured it out."

Johnny felt stupid for not seeing it. He groaned and sighed, feeling terrible. Price reassured him, patting his back. "You can still fix it. You can still win her heart," he said. "Go after her and tell her how ye really feel, Johnny."

Johnny balled up his courage and got off the stool. As he headed to the exit, Ghost and Gaz stood together with smirks.

Ghost was the first to speak. "She’s headin’ to the base rooftop."

Gaz continued, "She didn’t bring a toque, and it’s cold outside." He handed Johnny a toque.

Johnny smiled, grateful for the support from his pals, before dashing outside the bar, wearing his coat. His breath was visible in the cold air as he ran toward the base, climbing the stairs to the rooftop, breathless. He trained to run, and he was sure he’d get there in no time.

When he reached the rooftop, he found you hugging your legs against your chest, clearly upset about something. Not wanting to startle you, he cleared his throat and called out your name, catching your attention. He walked over and placed the toque on your head to keep you warm. "Ye’ll catch a cold if ye don’t wear one, bonnie," Johnny said softly.

"What are you doin’ here, John?" you asked, not even looking at him.

"I came lookin’ for ye," he said, his tone gentle. "I’m stupid for not noticing that I love ye," he blurted out, struggling to find the right words. He wanted to tell you that he had loved you since he laid eyes on you back at the training grounds, that he admired how strong and brave you were, and that he never slept with or dated anyone because he always wanted you.

But the words were stuck in his throat, and all that came out were stutters. You looked at him with wide, sparkling eyes under the moonlight.

He cupped your cheeks in his large, rough hands and kissed you passionately, pouring everything he wanted to say into the kiss. You were taken aback by the sudden action but kissed him back, pushing him back slightly to give him a wondering and confused look.

"I love ye since I can remember. I was just too stupid to see it. I’m sorry, bonnie. I should’ve acted on my feelings."

You smiled, finally hearing it from him. You ran your hand through his hair and smiled.

"No, it’s not your fault; it’s mine. I should’ve told ye too, but I was too scared to lose you... and our friendship."

"Well, I guess we’re both idiots then,"

Johnny muttered with a smile, leaning his forehead against yours.

"Aye, we are."

"At least I know now, I’m yours and yours only, bonnie. I’ll try to make up for lost time."

You smiled. "And I think I know a way."

He raised his brows, curious. "And what’s that?"

"Kiss me," you whispered against his lips before he kissed you passionately again, holding you close against him on the rooftop of the base.

From a distance, Price, Ghost, and Gaz watched, smiling.

"About time the two finally stopped pinning after each other," Ghost muttered proudly.

Gaz nodded, paying Price fifty.

Lesson: Love often blooms in the most unexpected places, especially when nurtured by the roots of friendship. billy batson relationship hcs?

Another lad who’s absolutely boyfriend material even though he might not think it.

Billy, with his obvious abandonment issues, would probably need a lot of reassurance that you weren’t going to just up and leave him in the middle of the night over something inconsequential. After all Billy is just a lost boy in need of a lot of love and affection but he’s scared to admit it out of fear that he’s just only giving people a reason to leave him; He just doesn’t want that to happen to you so he tends to cling on to you tight and hopes you don’t slip through his fingers like sand.

Billy would be that one audio from tiktok I heard ages ago that went something along the lines of; ‘loving someone is to show them your most vulnerable self and pray to god that they don’t break your heart.’ Which I think describes what Billy would be like in a relationship. He’d show you his most vulnerable self, bearing all his scars and wounds before you and praying that you didn’t end up crushing him in the process.

Which you damn well don’t because all you’ve done was hold him as though he were made of cracked porcelain, your hands mending him back together through the art of Kintsugi. You kiss all his scars and ailments whisky calling them the stars that litter his skin. You treat him with a gentle kindness that he wasn’t use to before and once he got a taste for it, he never wants it to go away��even if he does suck at asking for affection within the first few weeks of dating.

An couple of examples of this would be that if Billy were to want a hug, he’d stand nearby all fidgety, running his hands over one another as his eyes were down cast to the floor in an expression that would have one think that he was upset but in reality he was mulling over in his head how he was going to ask. You, somehow seeing through this, would smile and open your arms for him and watch in amusement as he would shuffle into your arms and feel him melt in your embrace.

When he wants to hold your hand, he’d subtly brush his hand against the back of yours a couple of times before you get the hint and grasp his hand, always making sure to intertwine your fingers with his and squeeze tightly so he knows that this wasn’t some figment of his imagination.

Each and every time he’d do this you always say to him, ‘don’t be afraid to ask, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. I’m here to stay.’

Ever since then Billy, whenever in need of comfort, would just flop himself onto you and it didn’t matter where you were during then because for how long he wished, you were stuck within his embrace but you weren’t complaining, He gives the best, most protective, warm and safe hugs you’ve ever experienced.

Protective, devoted and overall loyal. These three words are the best to describe Billy as a boyfriend. He’s naturally protective over you and tends to get overly worried about where you are when you haven’t returned his texts in the past 10 minutes, which causes his mind to overthink of all the bad that could possibly happen, and he’d soon be out that door faster then anyone can say Shazam. Freddy would have to be the one to give him peace of mind whenever this happens but it’s all effectively fruitless with Billy because loosing you wasn’t an option he was willing to consider ever happening. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he uses his alter ego to check up on you to make sure you weren’t in any real danger.

Loyal- Billy is as loyal as they come, if not the most loyal of even the most loyal of people, and he -much like Freddy- would rather be in your corner no matter what. He prioritises your happiness and well-being over his own sometimes and you have to remind him that being in a relationship is of the responsibility of both people, not just one. Still Billy would make sure your happy with him no matter what, even if he’d have to make a goof out of himself, he’d do it for you within a heartbeat.

Billy’s love languages -in my opinion- are quality time, words of affirmation and acts of service. Though the words of affirmation don’t come until he’s comfortable with himself and the relationship but it does happen.

He’d do small thing for you to express his affection even when he’s probably told you how much he appreciates you the day before, he’s got a massive heart that withholds a lot of love that’s just impatiently waiting to be shared. He’d make you a drink in the morning, tuck you tightly in bed at night, hold your bag for you, help you with any form of workload, make you light snacks when you forget to eat, carry you to bed when he finds you asleep in an uncomfortable position that would most definitely given you a crooked neck and a scream back.

He’s a bit of a nerd so if you were into all that superhero stuff like he is, then you’d for sure have debates on who the better superhero was or who had the coolest suits, weapons, powers, sidekicks, etc. it was just a fun way of bonding for the both of you outside of gaming, going on little arcade dates and movie nights and the like because it gave you all the more reason to hear his impassioned words. He looked youthful when he does so, his face clear of any and all worry and frown lines that seemed to have permanent residency on his face.

He adores you wearing his clothes and if you were to ever give them back, they suddenly become his favourite article of clothing because of how your scent clung to the fabric, subtly giving them back to you when they stopped smelling like you as a silent gesture for you to keep doing it because he loved having a part of you with him when you can’t be together physically.
