i tend to see this a lot around tiktok and not really as much here, but i really hate the notion that curly “deserved” what happened to him in the crash. am i saying this because i don’t think he deserved any consequences at all for what he did (or in his case, chose not do to)? absolutely not! he is a flawed, morally grey, complex character who did many misdeeds in his life and on the tulpar.

i hate this take because i really don’t think disability is inherently punishment, and it should not be viewed as such.

on the other hand, while i don’t think his disability is his punishment for his inaction, it can still serve narrative purpose! and it does!

curly ends up so severely burnt and disabled that he has no legs, no arms. he cannot speak. he cannot even really do anything other than just kind of lay there.

his inability to do anything for his crew after the crash is symbolic of his choice and his refusal to do anything for his crew before the crash, when he was still able.

he chose to turn a blind eye to jimmy assaulting anya, so after the crash, his eyelid was burnt off. he is unable to close his eye or stop watching.
