YES, exactly, I first raised an eyebrow at the scene where he's on the anniversary date with Kate and he literally watching Liv and her husband and mimicking what they do to try and seem more, like, romantic and assertive. But at the same time I was like, I dunno, it's probably just a coincidence, this isn't necessarily, like, indicative of anything, but then, oh my god...That dinner was, like- I was like, oh, yeah, he- Yup, this man is autistic, 100%, haha.

Am I just not looking hard enough or is there, like, nothing out there pointing out how the mayor in Resident Alien, Ben Hawthorne, is very autistic coded(intentionally, I assumed). What a great question! Full disclosure: I have only read 4.25 of the books 😜 I’ve read Anthony, Benedict, Colin and Eloise’s stories and have just started on Francesca. Plan is to read the rest and then circle back to Daphne at the end.

While each of the books have some great highlights (and a notable number of Bridgerton boys getting wet 😜) IMO the writing quality gets better as they go. I have only started Francesca’s (When He Was Wicked) and love the style and characters the most out of what I have read so far.

But my favorite book that I have actually finished has to be To Sir Phillip With Love - Eloise’s story. To me, Phillip felt like the most well-developed male main character thus far. He has a lot of trauma to overcome and personal growth to complete before he and Eloise can find their happy ending and it felt like a balanced story where we saw through the eyes of both sides of the couple. I was rooting for the romance that much harder because I could see how much it would help both of them. Bridgerton brothers A, B and C didn’t have much depth as written IMO (the show has fixed this, thank goodness!) and just sort of went out there and took the woman they wanted. But Phillip and Eloise find each other mutually. At least that’s how it felt to me. I love Philoise’s story so much that it’s a key part of my latest fic Willow Bark that I am wrapping up now - a spin on their book story, but you don’t have to know their book to read it.

Maybe it’s surprising that An Offer From a Gentleman (Benedict) isn’t my favorite. In fact, it’s my least favorite 😅 I found book!Ben to be incredibly toxic. That’s what started my fic writing actually! I started writing a ‘fix it’ version of his book which I may post snippets of someday. I’m so glad the show has adjusted Benedict to be the beautiful bohemian kind soul we can’t help but love 💙

i've only read RMB so far (to be fair i've read it like seven times). when i see characters that i like i tend to just attach to them like my life depends on it and that happened with polin from the gate.

with that said tho, i will read them all one day. and from what i've read/seen, i really love kate and anthony, and ben and sophie. as characters, couples and their book tropes too. I have a feeling lil gregory might sneak up on me too.

I’ll be honest, I use writing these as a bit of an escape as well so it’s nice that other people find some sort of calmness in my very chaotic writing style! And as long as it’s not putting you to sleep from boredom, I’ll take it! But honestly, thank you so much for your kindness towards my work I’m not sure what I’ve done to deserve it but I am very very thankful for it!

Okay! I s would be a very real concern for anyone no? Going out with a guy that supposedly looked for you for 12 months? Talk about pressure man. Anyway! Let’s dive in and torture Sophie a little.

Sophie Beckett could admit, in the early months of her relationship with Benedict Bridgerton, she was nervous a good 75% of the time she was with him. Or in fact any member of the Bridgerton family. As though Violet would stand at the end of their Sunday dinner and say Sophie this has been lovely but it’s time for you to leave Ben alone now Sweetheart. Or Kate would hand her a bag at the end of brunch and say And now all the trash can leave together. It wasn’t that she didn’t think the relationship was going well, Benedict seemed perfectly happy when he hummed Taylor Swift songs in her ear as they fell asleep with their legs intertwined but, as she’d never been good enough for anyone before she couldn’t possibly imagine how she’d ever be good enough for this man. Or his terribly kind family.

Sophie was an independent person by necessity if not By nature. And so asking for help had become something that she’d rather walk across hot coals to do. She still remembered Benedict’s absolutely bewildered face when she flopped down on his couch and explained that she’d spent all day hauling a new bookshelf flat pack up the three flights of stairs to her tiny little flat and them assembling it. Why didn’t you ask me? He’d said, his brow furrowing in confusion. Sophie who’d been barely paying attention as she took off the mittens Benedict’s sister Daphne had thrust into her hands last week at dinner (You and Ben have Green to match your eyes, Daphne had said and Sophie had had to choke back tears as she’d looked around the room at everyone trying on their new mittens, Lucy batting Gregory on the nose with their matching bright red ones) said Ask you what? And Ben had eyed her carefully Ask me to help with your bookshelf? Lifting heavy things is what we boyfriends do according to Greg and Anthony. And Sophie had stopped dead, because she knew if she’d called him he would have cancelled his day, driven her to IKEA and assembled whatever she wanted. She’d thought about it last night even but she hadn’t been able too because her step mother’s voice had rung through her mind Will you ever stop being a burden, Sophia? But how could she tell Ben that without being even more of a burden so she just shrugged and said At least I don’t have to work out now. And Ben had laughed and said Just call me next time, I’ll bring the boys if it’s too big a job. They won’t mind. And Sophie couldn’t quite manage to choke out that she would though

Sophie had tried desperately to get out of coming to the awards night with Benedict. Desperately. But then he’d looked at her with his sad eyes and said But I think my editorial with Eddie is going to win! And she’d given in. And she really did want to be there to support him, she did. But god, how was she going to stand in that room and feel enough for him when she couldn’t even do it in their house. And she knew it wasn’t fair, she knew that Ben loved her she felt it all the time, she just wished she could deserve it. And so she’d found herself very panickedly on the phone once more begging Kate Bridgerton for some kind of assistance and Kate had tugged her upstairs to a closet, looked mournfully down at her pregnant stomach and said Someone May as well enjoy them. And so here she sat sandwiched between Ben whose hand was firmly wrapped around her shoulder and Edwina Sheffield who a person couldn’t help but feel painfully inadequate next too when she was without a doubt the most beautiful woman in the room, and to make matters worse, unfairly kind, trying desperately to look as though she fitted in in Kate’s borrowed dress. And then, across the room she’d seen her. And her body went cold.

Sophie had excused herself into the corridor as soon as the dinner portion was done, trying desperately to calm her breathing down, there was no need to panic, she probably hadn’t even seen her, she prayed she hadn’t at least, but god wasn’t listening. Sophie Beckett, Well well well like mother like daughter Her step sister Rosamund’s voice rang through the hall and Sophie was rooted to the spot, her fingernails digging into her palms in a desperate bid to keep herself from crying Clawing your way up the social ladder by getting on your knees. I’ll admit, it was nice of him to take you out for a night in thanks but you don’t think he’s actually going to marry trash like- But A different voice cut across hers like ice, and Rosamund’s face paled as Edwina said firmly Sophie, there you are! Ben And I have been looking for you! Rosamund, such a surprise to see you I wasn’t aware they usually invited car show models. And then she took Sophie, very stunned at the cold tone where she’d only ever known warmth from Edwina,firmly by the arm and marched her away.

Before Sophie knew what was happening Edwina had whispered firmly in her ear Don’t listen to a word she said, Sophie, you are so incredible I’m going to get Ben. And Sophie could hear and and odd gasping noise that she realised was coming from her when tears hit the back of her hand. And then Ben’s voice, cracking with emotion was saying Soph? And she couldn’t help but collapse against him, her tears soaking into the chest of his very expensive tuxedo. Another thing she’d ruined for him. And he held her as she cried, right there in an alleyway until her breathing evened out and she whispered into the night I’m sorry I ruined everything, and I’m sorry I can’t be who you deserve. And Benedict had pulled back suddenly, startling her a little as he forced her eyesight to his, his eyes looked so intense when he said Listen to me, Sophie. You are more than enough for me. I wonder every day what I did to deserve you. You deserve to have whatever you want in life and god help me, Sophie I’m going to give it to you. And when their lips met in soft kiss, as rain started to sprinkle around them, she started to believe it.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 18X03

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I liked this episode overall, but I didn’t love it. The writing this season is slowly improving after a complete disaster of a Premiere so that’s good, but I still feel like the episodes this season lack punch. They lack suspense and drama and action. The pacing is just really slow and it’s getting on my nerves. I enjoyed Addison’s return, but I wish they’d done more with it. I loved seeing Addison back and Kate Walsh did an amazing job, but I felt like they could have gone further with her scenes and made them a bit deeper. I felt like they skimmed the surface of what they had to work with and that they could have gone a lot farther with it. 

My favourite Addison scenes of the episode were when her and Meredith were on the elevator and the scene at the end with Zola, Bailey, and Amelia. I thought Kate Walsh and Ellen Pompeo gave a great performance in the elevator scene. It felt genuine and real to me. That being said, the scene didn't have the emotional impact for me that I hoped it would. I felt emotional, but it didn't hit me in the gut as I was expecting it to. I think part of that was the music choice, how short the scene was, and the lack of build-up beforehand. I also loved the scene with Meredith and Derek's kids at the end of the episode. I thought that was really lovely. Especially when she told them that Derek called her Addie. I also really enjoyed the OR scenes with Meredith and Addison and watching them teach Levi. 

Speaking of Levi, while I liked his scenes and moments in this episode, the other residents, minus Jo, just got on my nerves. Their comments were so cringeworthy and disrespectful. Levi was literally the only person to tell them to shut up and show some respect to their attendings. Their speculation about Addison and Meredith was so childish and gossipy I just can't take any of them seriously as future doctors. It was awful. I liked that we got more medical cases this episode, but I can’t say any of them really grabbed me. It felt like this script needed another draft before it went to air. 

If I had to pick, I'd say that Rashida's case was my favourite. I don't feel that we got to know Addison's clinical trial patient well enough for there to be an emotional impact for me. I did like that Winston continued to advocate for Rashida and got her the kidney she needed. I loved seeing Ben back in action and the surgery truck scene between Ben, Owen, and Winston. While I thought Owen went overboard going to Noah’s house, I am excited for Owen to have a non-romantic storyline. Kevin McKidd is a great actor and deserves plotlines outside of his messy love life. 

The storyline with Teddy and Link trying to fix the broken HVAC Unit was just stupid and I still don’t get why Link is so suddenly dead set on marriage that he’s willing to throw away an otherwise healthy relationship with Amelia and put Scout in a split custody situation especially since that's what he had growing up and he tells Teddy that is exactly what he didn't want for Scout. Why is being married so important to him? And why doesn't Amelia seem to care about Link or Scout anymore? Is her tumour back? I know some people out there are rooting for Amelia and Dr. Bartley and I do feel like Amelia and Bartley could have good chemistry if it wasn't for the fact that Amelia has a whole ass family in Seattle that no one wants to see her leave which put her scenes with Bartley in a weird position. 

The HVAC plot was absurd. HVAC systems have been computerized for at least the past five years now if not longer. The ignorance on Teddy and Link's part was ridiculous. To me, storylines like that really devalue the important work that tradespeople do and since I come from a family of tradespeople it really bothers me. It’s just so ignorant and upsetting. You can be funny without spreading ignorant stereotypes about hard working people who basically have had to retrain as both maintenance and IT which is very impressive. 

That being said, I did enjoy Teddy’s turn as Ambassador of Fun! It was silly and hilarious and I loved it! I especially enjoyed the hats! The sequined biker hat Teddy put on Owen? LOL! My favourite scene of the episode was the one between Meredith and Hayes when he brings her coffee and they talk about her new project in Minnesota, the weather in Ireland, and how Austin is doing. I just love their chemistry together and I love seeing Hayes talk about Ireland. I also love that Meredith is confiding in Hayes about Minnesota and her plans to give up the Residency Program to Richard, but I’m confused as to why she hasn’t told him about Nick yet or why she would bother going out with him when she has Hayes back in Seattle whose clearly still interested in her. 

He literally tells her he’s unhappy about adjusting to the idea of her being gone part of each week and the only reason they aren’t together is because Austin is having a hard time right now so why is Nick even on this show? It doesn't make any sense. I feel like they are wasting Richard Flood's talent so far this season. He's a great actor, he brings so much depth to Hayes, and they are so underutilizing him it's maddening. Get rid of Nick and focus on the characters you have people! It’s not hard. Oh, and also pick up the pace while you’re at it. We’re only three episodes in and this season is already dragging. While I enjoyed this episode and I feel like the writing is slowly improving I'm really not digging this season. 

They had such a great set up coming off of the last two seasons and I thought with jumping ahead to a post-COVID world we would finally see the culmination of so many storylines that we've all been waiting for. But apart from Teddy and Owen's wedding we literally haven't gotten anything fans have been waiting for based on what they set up previously. So far, I'm super disappointed. Making Meredith Chief of the Residency Program at the end of last season just to have her give the program back to Richard so quickly is a super bizarre move. As I’ve pointed out in the past it’s also really weird that they've spent so much time talking about Jo switching to OB but so little time actually showing it. The promo for next week shows more Addison and her talking to Amelia so hopefully that’s good.

I'm actually rooting for the show to add 1 or 2 more episodes to season 3 bc like you I'm interested to see society's treatment, I'm not so sure but the show will probable leave the 7 years gap for S4 so the treatment Sophie and Benedict recieved in their own season will not be the same as 7 years after, but it's asking for too much, I'm also rooting for Benedict becoming regency sad boi by the end of season 2, it's the perfect entrance for his season, sorry for too much Ben and Sophie asks ☺️

Hi! I am so happy to get your asks! Please don't be sorry at all! I absolutely love getting messages, I'm rambling on here and I absolutely love chatting about Bridgerton, you can't shut me up haha.

I'm so rooting for that too! I'd be surprised if they did it considering Netflix tends to keep their popular shows to the same episode order, especially with their most expensive shows like Bridgerton, Stranger Things etc. It would be brilliant if they did do it considering S2,S3 and S4 are great books and love stories. I'd die if we got any more Kate & Anthony especially, oml. I just hope Johnny or Simone don't do what Rege did and leave the show :( I would guess they've made Johnny's contract longer considering Anthony is head of the family and is so important for future seasons, I WANT TO SEE ANTHONY'S RELATIONSHIP WITH ALL OF HIS SIBLINGS AND SOME APPRECIATION FOR THIS MAN. It would be awful to see someone go. Daphne is the only Bridgerton who could leave, she's barely in the books after hers and I could see Phoebe leaving after S2 anyway with Rege gone, especially with all the success she's having with her current and future projects.

I just hope we see Kate and Anthony and their babies in S3 and a glimpse of it in S2, I will not be able to cope and I will be HERE FOR IT. I'm just so excited for all the things we didn't see in the book as the show has more time and opportunity to explore more.

I can't see them not doing the time skip as it's so vital to all the other stories and the ages of the Bridgertons and their children. The bad thing about the time skip is I'd love to see Anthony and particularly Kate have a good plot in S3 reasonably close to the end of TVWLM, we could see her struggle with being adapting to being Viscountess, her pregnancies, possible issues she had in pregnancy or their marriage but they won't be able to as it's a big time skip.

If they delayed Charlotte's birth slightly that could be a potential plot for them in S3 but she was 1 or 2 in the third book so I'm sure, I've seen some great fics such as a thousand cuts by @wall-e-nelson which explores topics such as Anthony and Kate struggling to conceive and how that impacts their marriage. I would find that so interesting to see topics like that explored, as painful and sensitive as they are.

Hahaha regency sad boi 100%, Benedict is going to be Mr. Angst by the end of S2 which is the perfect entrance for his season! He'll continue his angst for most of his season, especially after the ball. The moment they meet is going to be so good and I can't wait for the magic of it, I hope Sophie's dress is extravagant and not disappointing.

I feel like I talked more about Kate and Anthony here haha but I'm so excited for ben and sophie! I'm also excited for Polin, they just need to work on Colin's character asap and bring some charm. He was so good in TVWLM and I need to see him mess with Anthony.

I watched the show before I read the books and I really liked the show but I fell in love with the books and show after I read TVWLM. The Duke & I didn't do it for me it was dull and boring but the TVWLM blew me away and I adored AOFAG as well. I did really like RMB just colin was a dick in it and no one being mad about Penelope's revelation? Come on. Especially now that the show is making Lady Whistledown's revelations like Marinas a lot more spicy and hurtful although I back Penelope's decision there, as awful as it was for Marina and if I was Marina I probably would have done the same. I love Eloise and I did like TSPWL but I just couldn't get passed Philip's treatment of his children.

MICHAEL STIRLING!? FRANCESCA! When he was wicked is SO GOOD. I am also a big fan of IIHK, I loved Hyacinth and Gareth and just thought it was fun! OTWTWT didn't do it for me, I just thought it was a bit of a messy book and boring. I was so frustrated about Hermione and Lucy's brother and Gregory was a bit meh.

I just finished answering one of these and now I wanna know yours. Top 10 straight OTPs?

1.) Ben and Leslie - Parks and Recreation

If this was my OTPs list, they’d be second after Gallavich, but since this is straight couples, they have to be my number one. Amy Poehler and Adam Scott had great chemistry. Adam Scott played a lot of creepy/bad guys before this. So, when he showed up in Pawnee, I didn’t know what to make of him when he came in at the end of season 2. Pretty quickly I realized I was not only going to love the character of Ben Wyatt but we finally found Leslie Knope’s perfect match! I’ll never forget the moment I knew I was going to ship them. It was at the Freddy Spaghetti concert when Ben helped Leslie after he was against doing the concert in the first place. As soon as I saw Ben give Leslie that look as she walked away, I knew I was all in with this ship. That’s all it took! Leslie finally met someone who got her, admired her, was in awe of her, and was so supportive of her and her ambitions. They were both willing to put their jobs at risk by making their relationship known. And if you know Leslie Knope, her job is her life. Leslie’s love for Ben’s butt is also something I loved. Their love for each other is so beautiful and one of my favorite things about this amazing show.

2.) Ava and Boyd - Justified

Joelle Carter and Walton Goggins did amazing work together onscreen. Ava and Boyd Crowder did not have the most conventional start to their romantic relationship, seeing as Ava was married to Boyd’s brother. For me, that is a deal-breaker! I know they’re not blood relatives but it’s still weird to me when in-laws get together. In the pilot, we learn Ava has just killed her husband in self-defense and Boyd was supposed to be killed off in that episode. The powers that be, loved both Joelle and Walton so much they brought them back for more and they were series regulars for the rest of the series run. To keep Ava part of the storyline, they had Boyd staying at Ava’s house in season 2. It all evolved from there. I had no intention of shipping these two during season 1, but by season 2, I was all about Ava and Boyd getting together. They were the true definition of a power couple. They even had matching bullet scares on their chest! They stood side by side as a strong force against anyone who tried to overpower them or intimidate them in their growing criminal enterprise. Boyd really saw Ava, treated her with respect, and saw her as his equal. They had a long history, even went to the same high school together. I always love a couple who has known each other since they were kids. I never thought I would root for current or former in-laws, but it was hard not to fall in love with them.

3.) Jess and Nick - New Girl

I knew I was going to ship them from the very first episode. They are everything I love in a good ship, complete opposites who bring out the best in each other, who are also friends. Over the years, any time Jess would describe her perfect man, she was always describing Nick without realizing it. Once she was asked what her dream guy would be, and she said Walter Matthau in Grumpy Old Men and Nick fits that perfectly. He really is like a grumpy old man. There was nothing these two wouldn’t do for each other. One example of this was when Jess burns her finger on a cigarette lighter in the car and Nick puts his finger in the cigarette lighter so they would be in the same amount of pain. Who even does that?! I was so happy when they finally had their first kiss and when they officially got together. Those are some of my favorite episodes when they were finally dating. Any time they dated anyone else it became even more clear how much better they are together. They never fit with anyone else as well as they fit together. They really were perfect for each other.

4.) Corey and Topanga - Boy Meets World

Corey and Topanga are the OG’s of childhood sweethearts on TV. They’ve known each other their whole lives and were very believable in their genuine love for each other. It’s not always easy to believe that people who get married that young can make it work, but these two always seemed to defy those odds. They got married during their sophomore year of college. Today I would be like whoa that’s too soon to get married! But they felt so right together, I believe I would still think they made the right choice. I may be biased because I grew up watching this show and I was even younger than them at that time, but it always felt like they were meant to be. I still remember what a big deal their wedding was. My friends and I were so excited about that episode. They clearly did do the right thing because the show came back as Girl Meets World, which was more focused on their daughter than them, so of course, I wasn’t planning on watching all that. The only good thing to come out of that reboot, for me, was to get confirmation that Corey and Topanga were still together and had two kids. 

5.) Arnold and Helga - Hey Arnold!

This was a very one-sided crush on Helga’s part for years! This was another show I grew up on. I shipped them so hard because Helga was obsessively in love with Arnold. It definitely wasn’t a healthy obsession, but she really loved him. It was hard not to root for her. She fell in love with him when he was the first to notice her and be nice to her on their first day of preschool. A part of me could identify with her at that time in my life. I was in 5th grade and was experiencing my first love too. She was always so mean to Arnold because she was terrified for anyone to even suspect she had a major crush on him. The best way to describe Arnold is through Helga’s own words, he’s “a funny little football-headed kid with a good heart but no sense of reality”. Helga was realistic and tough but very poetic and sweet in private. In 2017, when Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie came out, I was really hoping she would finally come clean with Arnold about her feelings. It FINALLY happened! That was 21 years in the making. Talk about slow burn!

6.) Tiffani and Jake - California Dreams

Jake and Tiffani are one of my very first ships ever. They were high school students who were in a band called California Dreams together. They were like night and day. She was the surfer type, who was positive, sunny, and friendly. Whereas Jake was a biker type who scared everyone. They were even too scared to let him audition for the band. He played guitar and would sometimes sing and write some of their songs. He wasn’t the main singer of the band, but he would sing every once in a while. She played the bass and would sometimes sing too. They did have a breakup that was heartbreaking for me. He dated their friend Lorena for a short time, and it felt so forced and didn’t work at all. Again, I could be biased because I love Jake and Tiffani, but Jake himself and Lorena realized they didn’t work either. That’s when Jake realized he was still very much in love with Tiffani, and they got back together. This show also had the best theme song ever! I sing it every single time I hear it and when I do hear it, it’s stuck in my head all day.

7.) Monica and Chandler - Friends

I always preferred Monica and Chandler over Ross and Rachel. They were never on and off like Ross and Rachel, which would get tiresome. We never had to deal with that with Monica and Chandler. Obviously, they are friends and know each other so well that it was easy for them to get through anything because of it.

8.) Castle and Beckett - Castle

Richard Castle and Kate Beckett had amazing chemistry, even after the actors themselves were no longer getting along behind the scenes. I am amazed at how they were still able to be so believable at being very much in love with each other. Castle, a best-selling mystery novelist, and Beckett, a New York City homicide detective. Castle is inspired by Beckett and she becomes his muse for a new book he is writing. Castle uses his connections with the mayor to force the police to let him shadow Beckett. Their personalities clash in the beginning but they soon find their groove and become friends and great partners at solving crimes. The will they, won’t they was excruciating at times but paid off when they finally got together.

9.) Sabrina and Harvey - Sabrina The Teenage Witch

Sabrina and Harvey were such a cute couple. I already went into this show knowing they were meant to be because of the Sabrina comic books. Harvey was always the boyfriend. So, when Harvey left the show after season 4, I was surprised and saddened. Especially, since Harvey had finally learned about her powers. He did guest star in season 5 but was brought back for the last two seasons. I really loved when he came back because Sabrina and Harvey’s relationship was so much better after he knew about her powers. They didn’t get back together and were only friends but whenever things got complicated, he was there to help her now that he knew she was a witch. She didn’t have to hide who she really was or lie to him anymore and I really loved how that changed their relationship. Sabrina was dating someone else at this time and was going to marry this other guy, but she doesn’t go through with it. For once I can actually say Sabrina and Harvey are soulmates and really mean it! Remember she is a witch and has a soul stone and Harvey was given one too. Harvey is waiting for Sabrina outside the church when she comes out and they kiss. Their soul stones drop to the ground and fit perfectly at 12:36pm, the exact time they first met seven years ago.Then they drive off together in his motorcycle.

10.) Kelly and Zack - Saved by The Bell

Who didn’t grow up in the 90′s and wasn’t shipping Zack and Kelly? I thought they were the most gorgeous couple I had ever seen. Saved by The Bell: The College Years wasn’t a great show, but I was happy to see Zack and Kelly went to the same college, and eventually, we got to see them get married in a TV movie with Saved by The Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas.

Genuine question what is billions even about I see clips all the time and I cannot figure out what the plot is besides like “business” but I am very much in love w Taylor Mason (i think that’s their last name?) so I am intrigued ...

yeah it’s not at all a Just You thing, not only do we often only post about a particular slice of the series, it’s just REALLY difficult to get (or provide. but i’m always up for the challenge) a sense of what Billions is like as a series like, genre wise, and re: the plot, my god, every [usually more than 50 min but less than an hour] episode is a journey, in that So much will have happened. it moves at a Pace, i can tell you. but you know, good news in that it’s not really necessary to explain every plot thread ever, b/c it’s as much about its Themes or what have you

the stats rundown is billions is a weekly showtime tv series partway through its 5th season (12 episodes per season, currently they are producing the last half of s5 but had been on pandemic production hiatus for the past year, we do not yet know when the rest of s5 will air, s6 was greenlit a while ago) this isn’t really need to know for this question lol, but you don’t need to Not know either

the like, content Rundown is that yeah, it’s business, mostly high finance, although one of the main characters is always doing Legal Stuff (don’t care really b/c that side of things is not generally as relevant to, yes, taylor mason, who Makes the series). the kind of overarching Theme / premise is that the show is about like, here’s these Conflicts between people who are wielding some power in various ways, looking at the motivations of the individuals involved / the Cause And Effect web of these conflicts between them, e.g. how the consequences / fallout of one Power Play Maneuver will affect someone else’s storyline and result in them executing their own maneuvers, and of course, the pitfalls of all of this. more specifically, the series kicks off with the two (then (taylor is introduced in season 2) mainest characters, Axe, ceo of a hedge fund, and Chuck, some kind of lawyer who decides to go after axe b/c axe thinks he’s hot shit (true) and chuck is like ohhh i gotta do something about this guy. so there’s an Unending Conflict, axe vs chuck, an ongoing back and forth series of small or more overarching battles, and of course sometimes alliances, because there’s a Lot of characters on this show and we’re in season 5 so there’s been plenty of other Conflicts introduced besides this particular ongoing war. also, uh oh, chuck’s wife wendy works for the hedge fund axe runs! that’s just a whole wrench in things. as some sort of like, in house therapist performance coach sort of deal, thanks wendy, she’s also fairly a Main Character

axe is somewhat more relevant for our purposes b/c that’s that Finance side of the show via which taylor is introduced. but yeah both axe and chuck are exasperating lmfao like, this isn’t a show where it’s about the Likeability of whatever main character where like, you’re rooting for the obviously righteous / justified person or anything, it’s more about being along for the ride where you get to know Why people are engaging in these conflicts for sure, but like, unless you’re one of plenty of fans who maybe aren’t bringing the most Insight to the show who find any of this like, aspirational Epic Winner stuff like hell yeah axe or chuck as the Cool Guy Who Deserves To Win lmfao, being along for the ride is knowing that you’re just getting to watch this unfolding mess, so that’s “fun” lol

to get more to the point, yeah Taylor Mason is again the best part of the series lol, they’re introduced early in s2 as a Very Talented young iintern at axe capital (axe’s hedge fund) who, yknow, part of what makes axe an Eventful character to center things around is he’s (sometimes) capable re: all these strategic finance maneuvers, and also all “i don’t play by the rules,” which can often mean like, the actual rules like “no insider trading please” or more kinda implicit moral rules like “don’t keep taking Business Advantage over people’s deaths,” and here means that even though taylor is this early to mid 20something intern with no experience in finance who’s not even, at that juncture, necessarily planning to stay in the industry, he’s like yeah they’re valuable and i’m not gonna hold them back from that potential / opportunities * just because they’re a 20something new to the industry intern who definitely doesn’t behave in the Usual Way around here and is also a canon nonbinary character, thanks ( * you might not believe it, but axe does not proceed to only ever be a potential encouraging, opportunity creating ally* (*although, one nice thing is that they....almost always....have axe adamantly hold everyone who works with him to respecting taylor as a nonbinary person, at least in how they address taylor. b/c taylor Does get misgendered periodically, which can be exhausting, but they also aren’t exactly striving to hold it to what might be most “””realistic””” so like, taylor isn’t subject to transphobia and misgendering All The Time either) and so taylor very quickly goes beyond internship at axe cap, to the extent that when, at the end of season 2, axe effectively leaves them in charge of the whole fund when his own fuckups mean he temporarily Can’t helm axe cap

aaand then s3 starts off with taylor running things but has axe return Officially in charge soon enough, so there’s problems there, in that axe is now pulling taylor Back, and like, axe is alllllll about his ego, so it’s like, of course he’d Want taylor to have been able to successfully run axe cap while he couldn’t, since it’s his fund, but then of course he’s also mad about it b/c he needs everyone, like taylor, to know he’s better & more winning than them. and taylor doesn’t appreciate now being more sabotaged and stifled and that, like, if they’re mad about being treated this way, axe is just gonna be mad about That b/c you know, why aren’t they Only grateful to their mentor or deferential to his Skill And Experience, as well as the fact that no matter how much of an Ally you are to him, he’ll be mad if you’re not unilaterally loyal, aka if he fucks you over you can’t be mad about it or that’s actually a way you’re wronging Him, and you’re also wronging him if yknow, you say he can’t/shouldn’t just do what he wants, or do anything that to him implies you don’t think he’s objectively the Best most Winning and Deserving guy in whatever regards, like, if you’re associated with someone who makes him feel insecure in his superiority for one moment, and/or who he thinks doesn’t also recognize his superiority or something, he’ll be mad at you.......the Conflicts can arise v easily around here with this beloved character walking around. so, yeah, whereas season 2 for taylor is more like wow taylor you’ve got all this potential and value here, in season 3 taylor’s sure got reason to question their future at axe cap (see this post resident Billions / Taylor Mason Pro soph made last night) and, when not only are they and axe just more often going head to head over what they want here, there’s also this added egregious conflict of “taylor starts seeing this guy oscar who’s also in finance (but not at axe cap) and when they ask axe for some input on a matter via which they intended to help oscar out, axe uses that Information taylor just used to fuck oscar over to his own advantage, and when taylor is like ‘what the hell’ axe is just like ‘what’d you expect!! i gotta be me!!! if you expected anything different, that’s on you, and if you Did expect me to do this, that’s also on you’ because i’m sure it’s a surprise to hear that axe considers himself this like, force of nature where all his feelings and motivations and justifications are Objective and Correct, and then taylor has to tell oscar what happened and naturally this ends the relationship, to their evident further unhappiness” and oops, season 3 ends with taylor having started their own hedge fund.

i could give a tl;dr for what happens over the course of s4 & (so far in) s5, but i think the s2/s3 arcs are kinda the Essential Lore for explaining this character who crashes into the show (not in that their character tends to crash, their arrival and presence is clearly somewhat of a shakeup re: the norm, but they themself are all about staying balanced and Not being driven by tumultuous emotional impulses or anything like that, *cough, the characters they are quite a Foil to in this way*) and quickly ascends to Main Charactership. (also just remembered the other stats note that taylor is played by asia kate dillon, who is themself nonbinary.) another element that is a lot of fun re: taylor is that they have like, the series’ best Friendship lol, the show is not very conducive to a bunch of characters having a bunch of heartwarming relationships, though they sure Do appreciate those characters and let us see a lot of Dynamics at play even beyond the “these people are locked in conflict” plots and characterful interactions and moments for their own sakes, and Alliances, even friendships, sure are the other side of the Ongoing Conflicts coin here. but what i’m getting around to is that taylor gets to be good buds with mafee, a Guy who was working at axe cap already in season 1, who, along with ben kim (Another Guy At Axe Cap in S1, who we are also fans of) is like, one of the actually nice(r) people around there, and who is just like. such this Hapless Cishet Dude lmfaooo but he also happens to be the guy overseeing taylor’s (and presumably others’) internship, and is yknow, maybe kinda conflicted about “i’ve Been an actual employee this whole time and there goes an intern rocketing past me” but is also Supportive towards taylor, and taylor in turn is an Ally to him, and they are Friends, and when taylor starts their own fund, Taylor Mason Capital, mafee is the person from axe cap who helps them do it and leaves axe cap to work for them there. there’s also a part in s4, after an arc in the middle of the season ended up with taylor taking quite an emotional L, mafee has gone and confronted Responsible Parties over it and, naturally, ended up in a charity interfund Boxing Match (which, a] billions is deliberately Wild plenty of times in both its Elevated Dialogue style but also just like, things that happen lol but b] apparently that’s something that can & does happen in real life in hedge fund world. absolutely bizarre to learn this kind of stuff) taylor kinda gives him this pep talk including “asking you to come with me (to TMC, mase cap, their fund) was the best decision i ever made” and even back then, when we’d just started paying attention to the show fairly recently and weren’t exactly familiar with everyone and everything going on, it was like oh i Gotta post that clip lmao

there are many other side characters, this is a very Populated show, including like, recurring characters, people liable to be introduced at various points who might become regulars Or make repeat appearances but more periodically Or be around for part of a season, but naturally also i am mentioning one specific side character of Winston (No Official Last Name), who is a Quant, aka a quantitative rather than fundamental analyst, who first appeared in One Scene at the start of season 3 when taylor was looking to hire some quants for a project, but did not succeed, and the character (then only Quant Kid 2) was only meant to have that one appearance, but delightfully everyone wanted him back and they wrote more material for him asap. taylor later brings him on to their quant project, which is revealed to be part of what ensures they can start their own fund, and in season 4 winston is apparently the head of the quant team at mase cap, and he continues to appear as taylor’s main Quant. could go into a long (and, as he’s not a Main Character and it’s easier to cover his material, very thorough) tangent there lol but you’re asking about taylor and i’m only bringing up winston b/c technically he Is relevant there lmfao but also, i have to, and [tfw this side character quant who was originally only going to appear in one brief scene was the reason you got into this series in the first place and now it’s like well, We’re Here Forever, and also, taylor mason is The character]

natch you must’ve noticed if you’re sending me an ask about billions, but if you like taylor mason you Gotta be following @nothingunrealistic the #1 Tayficianado and who has also recently nobly finished Actually Properly Watching Billions and who can give you all kinds of info about the character / series, there’s A LOT to cover and it’s kinda impossible to convey some stuff w/o simply experiencing things yourself firsthand lmfao but also, we think about these characters and this show every day for like, two years and running, so. as you can see......totally willing to talk about it at any time to any extent lol

Finally, Beautiful Stranger Chapter 14, Part 1

A/N: I know it's been way too long, but I wanted this chapter to be perfect, and to be honest, I really really love how it turned out. I had publish it in two part because it got too long, but the next part will be posted today too so you don't have to wait for long. I lowkey cried during writing this, and I hope you guys will too. 

TW: none, maybe some language but it's really just tooth rotting fluff

“Are you sure you want this?” you ask Will as the two of you are standing in the door of the house you share, a bag in Will’s hands, he’s ready to leave.

“Yes, I am. We didn’t really keep any other traditions when it comes to a wedding, but let’s do this one.” Will says. 

A few days ago, he came up with the idea that you should spend the night before your wedding apart and you shouldn’t see each other until the wedding. First, you thought it was stupid, but the more you thought about the idea, the more you liked it. 

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” Will whispers as he steps closer to you “At the altar.” he leans down to place a soft, lingering kiss on your lips. 

“I’ll be the one in white.” you smile at him, and he gives you another kiss for the last time before he goes to spend the night at Benny.

“Oh, holy shit.” you say nervously as you’re standing in front of the mirror, wearing your wedding dress. 

“It’s your wedding day, Isabelle. Don’t curse!” your mother scolds you. You roll your eyes, but leave it up to her.

It’s your wedding day, and the closer you get to the ceremony, the more nervous you are. 

“How are you doing, sweetheart?” your mother asks you, but before you could answer, you hear a knock on the door. 

“I got it.” Kate says, and she goes to open the door. You hear Benny mumbling something, and he steps into your dressing room. 

“He wants to talk to you alone.” Kate states, you nod and see her, Natalie, and your mother leaving the room, leaving you alone with Ben.

“Is something wrong? Did Will change his mind?” you ask nervously as you step closer to him.

“No, no.” Ben shakes his head “I just wanted to talk to you.”

“Oh, okay.” you nod. 

“You’re breathtaking, Isabelle.” Benny says “My brother is one lucky man.” You smile at him sweetly.

“Thank you, baby. You look really dashing.” And he really does. He’s wearing a simple black suit with a royal blue tie, and for once, he’s not wearing that god damn hat. You swear you could see him blush a little, before he started speaking again. 

“I wanted to check up on you, to see you before everyone else does. But, I also wanted to tell you a few words before you officially become my sister-in-law.” Ben starts. He takes a deep breath before continuing. “I’m really glad that my brother found you. You know, he was not himself in the last couple of years, before he met you. He wouldn’t say it, but he was constantly sad and hopeless. And that night, when we first met with you at the bar, I saw something change in him. And the closer the two of you got, the more I saw him becoming his old self again. It’s almost like he has a golden, happy glow now, if that makes sense.” the whole time Benny’s eyes were fixed on the floor, but now he’s finally looking you in the eyes. “I guess I just want to say, thank you for making my brother happy. He deserves it more than anyone else after what he went through, and I’m glad that someone like you makes him happy. You’re truly amazing, the way how you care about not just him, but about me too. I’m not your responsibility, yet you care about me like I am. I’m just grateful for you, and for your beautiful self.” he finishes his words with a small smile. Ever since he started talking, you had tears in your eyes, and by the end you’re almost crying.

“Fucking hell, Benny. I’m gonna ruin my makeup with the crying.” you tell him playfully, and you blink rapidly, trying to keep the tears from falling. 

“Come here, my big baby!” you tell him and invite him for a big hug. “I’m so happy that you’re in my life. And I forever will love you and your brother.” you pull away and cup his face in your hand. Even with your heels on, he’s still a lot taller than you. 

“You can alway count on me in everything. Consider me as a safe space.” you say and Ben lets out a small laugh. 

“I know, Izzy. And thank you.” he leans down to kiss you on the cheeks before your other comes back into the room, telling you it’s almost time. 

You hear the music start as you stand in front of the closed door of the venue, ready to go inside. Your heart beats so fast you’re afraid it might rip your chest open, and you take several deep breaths before the door opens, revealing the guest to you, but most importantly Will, who’s waiting for you on the end of the aisle. 

In that moment when you see him, standing in his suit, waiting for you, suddenly everything and everyone disappeared, your focus is solely on Will, he’s the only one who matters. Your previous nervousness all went away as you slowly started walking towards him, your eyes never leaving his, and his never leaves yours. 

You’re slowly walking closer and closer to him, and when you’re finally close enough, you can see tears rolling down on his face as he’s watching you. 

He reaches a hand out to you, and you take it, as you take the last few steps and you’re finally, finally, standing in front of William. 

“You’re so beautiful.” He whispers to you, and you squeeze his hand before you let it go to wipe a few of his tears. 

The marriage officiant started the ceremony, but you only could focus on Will and the way how he looks at you, like you’re his whole universe. And to be fair, you are his whole universe. 

“And now, the wedding vows.” You hear the officiant say, and he gives Will a microphone. You’re still holding one of Will’s hands, your eyes never left his since you stood in front of him. William takes another deep breath before he starts his speech. 

“I carry your heart with me (i carry it in

My heart) i am never without it (anywhere

I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done

By only me is your doing, my darling)

I fear

No fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want

No world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)

And it's you are whatever a moon has always meant

You’re fully crying by the end, tears rolling down on your face, not bothering about your makeup. 

“Gosh, I love you so much.” You whisper, and it’s Will’s turn now to wipe your tears. You take the microphone from Will, you swallow and lick your lips before you start to speak. 

“Now, I don’t know how I’ll top that, but I’ll try.” You joke, and laughter fills the room, and Will flashes his breathtaking smile at you. You enjoy this small moment before you turn serious.

“William, my love. It’s really hard to put into words how much I love you and how much you mean to me, but I’ll try.” You take a deep breath, and start speaking again “You are the best thing what ever happened to me. I didn’t experience true love until I met with you, I didn’t know what it’s like when someone gives their whole heart to you, and what it means to be really in love, that kind of love what moves the earth and stars, and you feel like you can’t breathe without your partner next to you. But this is how I feel, I feel that without you, nothing makes sense, it’s like a part of me is missing when you’re not with me. There’s this Greek myth about soulmates, that humans originally were created with four legs, four arms, and a head with two faces. But Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves. I didn’t believe this until I met with you, because in that moment I saw you, something clicked, and I felt like I finally was a whole, like I found a part of me which I didn’t know I was missing.” You squeeze Will’s hand what you’re holding, he’s crying as hard as you do. “William, my love. Thank you for your beautiful heart and soul that you share with me everyday, thank you for making me the happiest person ever, and I promise you that your heart will always be safe with me. I love you.” You give the microphone back to the marriage officiant, you and Will are wiping each other’s tears. 

“And now, the rings.” the officiant says, and Benny steps closer to the two of you, giving Will your ring, and Will’s to you. 

“Do you, Isabelle Teller, take William Miller as your lawful wedded husband?”

“I do.” you say smiling.

“Do you, William Miller, take Isabelle Teller, as your lawful wedded wife?”

“I do.” Will says, and you slip the ring on his finger, and he does the same to you.

“You may kiss your wife.” Will doesn’t even wait for the officiant  to finish the sentence, his arms are around you, lifting you up slightly as he kisses you passionately, your arms are wrapped tightly around his neck. You faintly can hear clapping and cheering, but your focus, like before, is only on Will.

You only pull apart when you feel your lungs screaming for air, and you look around and see everyone standing and clapping, cheering, and some people are even yelling. You look back at Will, whose eyes are on you, he’s watching you with a big smile. 

“I love you so much.” you whisper, and kiss Will again. 

The Wedding Reception was beautiful, the food was amazing and everyone had an amazing time. Will and you stayed side by side the whole night, none of you felt like spending even one minute without each other. 

Your first dance as husband and wife was even more beautiful and magical, you were really nervous about it, neither you or Will are particularly dancing types, so you had to take dance lessons before the wedding, but you were still nervous about it. But all your worries went away when you were in Will’s arms, dancing slowly to your chosen music, and again, during the whole time, your focus was only on Will, and his on you. By the end of your dance, no eyes in the room left dry, almost everyone was crying, or had tears in their eyes.

And now, you’re sitting at the table, Will next to you, his face is hidden in your neck right now, kissing and nipping gently. You usually are not big on PDA, but it’s your wedding day, you just got married to the love of your life, and you never saw Will happier than he is now, so you only care about the two of you. 

“Have I told you how beautiful you are?” he whispers close to your face.

“Not in the last 5 minutes, you didn’t.” you reply.

“That’s too bad, because you’re breathtakingly beautiful.” he says, and you smile at him, but before you could answer, you see Ben stand up and hit his glass of champagne with a knife. 

“Sorry to disturb everyone’s fun, but I’d like to say a few words.”

“Oh, god.” you hear Will mumble next to you, and you let out a chuckle. 

“You guys probably expect a speech from me where I say awkward things about my brother, and now sister-in-law. But that won’t be the case, brother, so you can calm down.” laughter fills the room, and Benny waits until it calms down before he continues. “I just wanted to say, how grateful I am that someone like you, Iz, takes care of my brother. You’re truly a wonder, and my brother is the luckiest man ever to have someone like you as his wife. And you, my brother, you are the best big brother anyone could ever ask for, and you deserve true happiness, and I’m really glad that you’ve found it in someone like Isabelle. I’m really glad to have a family like this.” you see Benny swallow his tears back before he raises his glass of champagne “To this beautiful couple!” he says, and everyone in the room repeats it and cheers. 

“I love you, Benny boy.” you hug him, and he gratefully hugs you back. 

“I love you, little bro.” Will says, and he hugs Benny too. 

After cutting the cake, and eating a fair amount, Will and you decided it’s time to leave. 

“We have a flight to catch tomorrow.” Will says as an excuse, but you know it’s not the truth, he’s just excited to go home and make love to you. 

“Yeah, yeah.” Ben says with a roll of his eyes, even he knows Will is lying. “You two have fun, and don’t do anything what I wouldn't do.” After saying your goodbyes, Will helps you into the car, and he sits next to you on the backseat. He gives the address to the driver, and you’re surprised that he’s not taking you home. 

“Where are we going?” you ask curiously. 

“To a 5 star hotel.” Will says sheepishly “This is Kate and Natalie’s gift for us. Apparently someone from Kate’s family owns this hotel, and she got us their best room for the night, and the day after, until we actually leave for our honeymoon.”

“Oh.” is all you can say suddenly “You still haven’t told me where we are going.”

“I’ll tell you once we are at the airport.” he says, and he wraps an arm around his shoulder and buries his nose in your hair, inhaling your scent.

Wow you really do applaud the bare minimum and basic stuff Kate does. What about Meghan who acturally has done shit? Like who had a careeer and did stuff for charity. This fandom loves white mediocrity. Kate hasn’t done shit. She hasn’t even done that much this year. She was gone for a whole month this year. But yeah white duchess is perfect. Bi racial duchess is BAD.

Wow, I am so fucking tired of hearing that Kate didn’t do anything before her marriage.  Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, it would have been very difficult for Ms. Catherine Middleton to get neck-deep into a career?  Think about it:

She falls in love with William Wales who just happens to be the future King when she is hardly 19 years old - still a child in a lot of ways.  They break up briefly when she is 25 - six years later.  I don’t know if you’ve ever dated someone for six years, but I have, and let me tell you - the marriage/”where is our future going” conversation comes up a lot.  Especially if marriage means one half of the couple giving up their right to privacy, their career, their home, just about everything while the other gets to keep everything he’s ever had.  In those six years, Kate probably knew that she couldn’t launch herself into a career the same way other 19-25 year olds do because she basically knew that someday it would be all for naught, that she’d have to abandon everything she worked so hard for for the sake of the man she loved and the institution into which he was born.  It’s not like she was strapped for cash.

Then, they famously, and briefly, break up.  Catherine Middleton’s entire life plan (one that she and William created together for six years) has been thrown for a loop because now she has to figure out something else to do instead of being a future Duchess of Cambridge, Princess of Wales, and Queen Consort.  So she launches herself into the Sisterhood Challenge, which was not only an extraordinary physical endeavor, but also raised money for the Babes in Arms charity - which focuses on combating birth defects in newborns - and The CHASE Ben Hollioake fund - which focuses on supporting children’s hospice care.  Do you know what two of Kate’s biggest causes are today, 12 years later?  You got it - early childhood healthcare and hospice care.

Then, they get back together, and I can imagine they had a conversation that “this time, it’s for the long haul.”  What was she supposed to do?  Start working in a museum in Florence?  Go on a mission trip?  Do you have any idea the kind of strain her presence - unprotected, as just a girlfriend, by the royal family - would have had on communities already suffering and struggling to maintain resources?  The presence of not only her, but the paparazzi that followed her endlessly, would have put immense pressure on struggling communities:

Why is it any concern to you what she did before her marriage?  She was a private citizen.  She could have lounged by the pool 365 days a year, margarita in hand, flipping through gossip magazines, and eating crepes for breakfast and that still wouldn’t, like, disqualify her or anything from being a Duchess.  Wanna know why?  Because the only qualification for somebody like Ms. Catherine Middleton to become a Duchess is to marry Prince William.  And that’s exactly what she did.  William fell in love with her and the rest is history - nearly twenty years later.  If it’s good enough for him, then it’s good enough for anyone else - including you.

Now, onto “Kate hasn’t done shit.”  Really?  In the past 18 months alone, Catherine has:

She’s developed initiatives and attached her name, face, title, and presence to some of the UK’s best causes.  She’s by all accounts brilliant, compassionate, keen to learn, inquisitive, dedicated, and interested to her causes.  

A quote from Professor Peter Fonagy, the CEO of the Anna Freud Centre, one of Kate’s patronages:

“The Duchess has a serious and professional interest in children’s mental health which has been a game changer.  She has boosted our profile exponentially and has had a huge role in raising the national awareness in the mental health of children. As far as we are concerned she’s the most important woman doing this in the world right now. To the millions of children who have been suffering in silence, she is their voice.”

Catherine has three young children and likely several years before she will be married to the heir.  What good is being a princess if she’s not afforded the simple luxury of being able to parent her children while they’re still small?  If it’s good with the Queen (it is, or else it wouldn’t be happening), then it’s good with me, and once again, it should be good with you.

This fandom loves Kate because she’s sweet, smart, strong, caring, and compassionate.  She is a wonderful wife, mother, sister, daughter, and ambassador to the Royal Family.  The world is exceptionally lucky to have her.  That’s why we love her.  Black, white, purple, doesn’t matter - that’s why we love her.

Now, onto Meghan.  First of all, fuck you for those comments.  I spend hours and hours of my life defending Meghan from the vile things people say about her online.  I have an entire tag devoted to defending both her and Kate.  Meghan is incredible in her own right.  She’s sweet, kind, dedicated, compassionate, interested, and determined.  She has a backbone of steel - in the face of prejudice worldwide, she stood loudly and proudly in front of the world’s audience and dedicated the rest of her life in love to a British prince as a biracial divorced American actress.  That takes strength unlike anything I could probably imagine.  

She has done incredible, incredible things in her life, both before becoming a royal and after.  I had high expectations for her going into her marriage to Prince Harry and she has exceeded every last one of them.  As a woman who is attacked daily for the skin and circumstances into which she was born, whose new life is nothing if not foreign to her, she is excelling, thriving, even - in the face of the millions of people rooting for her to fail.  The Duchess of Sussex is incredible.  Anyone with eyes can see that.

Catherine’s successes do not have to supercede Meghan’s and Meghan’s successes do not have to supercede Kate’s.  They are each wonderful, successful, beautiful, and brilliant in their own rights.  You call yourself an ally?  You call yourself a fan?  Then do not come here and tear down one of them to bring the other up.  You think Meghan would like how you’re speaking about the only sister she truly has?  I don’t.  Not at all.

The Civilians Announces Tenth Annual R&D Group

The Civilians will present the newest members of The R&D Group, marking the Group's 10th season, and The Civilians 20th Anniversary Season. The R&D Group is comprised of playwrights, composers, and directors who work together as a writing group for nine months to develop new plays and musicals. The season culminates in the Findings Series, a works-in-progress reading series anticipated taking place in June 2021. The artists were selected from a competitive application process. The open call received a record number of 268 applications, a 60% increase from last year.

The members of The Civilians' 2020-21 R&D Group are Galia Backal, Nana Dakin, Isabella Dawis, Jacinth Greywoode, Jaime Lozano, Emily Lyon, AriDy Nox, Reynaldo Piniella, Tylie Shider, Tidtaya Sinutoke, Rachel Stevens, Ken Urban, and Noelle Viñas.

Led by R&D Program Director Ilana Becker, the artists share work as it develops, discuss their creative processes, and provide a community of support for one another. Each project develops according to its unique methods of creative inquiry, offering new approaches to the idea of "investigative theater." Methods may include interviews, community engagement, research, or other experimental methods of inquiry. The artists will meet twice a month, virtually.

"The sheer talent and curiosity we encountered in this year's applicants proved exceptionally heartening. This season's R&D Group artists, in particular, inspired us with their visionary and deeply personal approaches to questions that demand illumination," said Becker. Artistic Director Steve Cosson added, "I am overjoyed to mark the 10th Anniversary of The Civilians' R&D Group with these exceptional artists; I'm immensely excited as they embark on the process of developing these vital new projects."

Ken Urban's project, THE MODERATE, joins the group through The Civilians' new work development program; his play is commissioned by the EST/Sloan Project, developed by The Civilians, and will receive its first reading at EST. This season, Cosson and Becker will also hold two virtual roundtable sessions with Finalist Directors in order to better get to know their work, and to expand community.

SUNWATCHER

Libretto by Isabella Dawis, Music by Tidtaya Sinutoke, Directed by Nana Dakin, with support from Producer/Cultural Consultant Ikumi Kuronaga

SUNWATCHER, a Noh-inspired musical, is the story of astronomer Hisako Koyama (1916-1997) - intertwined with the ancient Japanese myth of the sun goddess Amaterasu, in a retelling inspired by the structure of classical Noh theatre. Hisako was a woman with no formal scientific training - also a survivor of the 1945 US air raid of Tokyo, the deadliest bombing in history - who managed to rise to the stature of Galileo. She did so by drawing the sun in painstaking detail every day for 40 years, a landmark achievement for solar science. SUNWATCHER is a celebration of Hisako's extraordinary dedication to ordinary observation, reminding us how seemingly small acts can have an immense impact over time and space.

BLACK GIRL IN PARIS

BLACK GIRL IN PARIS is a musical about one of the most famous and least known black women in the American historical canon: Sally Hemmings. It hones in on her years spent in Paris, a point in her life where she both had the most access to freedom ever afforded her and the beginnings of the relationship that would forever define her legacy. Black Girl in Paris seeks to explore the inherent contradictions of an enslaved young black woman held in bondage in a city where slavery has been outlawed, under a man widely considered to be one of the architects of one of the greatest articulations of the necessity of freedom in the western world. It also centers an ensemble cast of Ancestors who chide and guide Sally along her journey, interweaving fables and history to craft the nuanced world Sally is forced to grapple with. At the heart of this musical is the question "What does it mean to be free?", a question black Americans have been grappling with since the original kidnapping and enslavement of Africans for The American Project.

DESAPARECIDAS (Working Title)

Told through the lens of Mexican folklore, our story explores the psychology behind societal suppression and the strategic erasure of female voices in the fight to end gender-based violence and the killing of women and girls. A female ensemble assumes a community of characters in a tapestried play of dramatized accounts, fictionalized scenes and musical sequences to unearth and dismantle the moral behind the 'myth' of violence against women.

DISSENTARY

Written by Reynaldo Piniella, Directed by Emily Lyon

Tasked with escaping your neighborhood, you inevitably run across environmental hazards that impede your progress. Especially if you're Black, Indigenous or Latinx. Dissentary takes inspiration from the classic game The Oregon Trail and adds an environmental justice lens; your group can do one of two things - leave in pursuit of clean air, water and healthy food, or stay and defeat the corporations focused only on profits. Dissentary will both be a participatory theatrical piece as well as an accompanying card game that will allow people to play the game off-line themselves, thus giving access to people who normally don't have access to the arts.

For a minimum of eight hours a day, with a target of at least 2,000 videos a day, Frank evaluates the videos and photos uploaded on the world's largest social media site. What Frank sees, he can't un-see, but he soon realizes he has the power to change the world. Playwright Ken Urban and director Steve Cosson will interview scientists, researchers and policymakers in order to dramatize the hidden human cost of the internet and imagine a future when a free exchange of knowledge and information is possible again. This project is an EST/Alfred P. Sloan Science & Technology Project Commission.

EL CÓNDOR MÁGICO

Written by Noelle Viñas, Directed by Galia Backal

El Cóndor Mágico examines the events of Operation Condor, the US-backed campaign of right-wing dictatorships and repressive regimes in South America throughout the 1970s-80s via oral history, research, and satire. It will also explore the American fascination with magical realism, a Latin American narrative tool rooted in history in a region where people have been known to "disappear," problems miraculously go away, and corruption can serve as a curtain behind which history does tricks. Research will unravel how the political imprisonment of over 400,000 people, varied intimidation/torture tactics taught by the US, and unknown thousands of "disappeared" people set a precedent for relations between the US and Latin America that haunt us today. With an eye on Operation Condor's long shadow and impressive wingspan, it asks: who is the magician behind the "magical realism" when it comes to the relationship between Latin America and the US?
