Caught Eyes From A Mile Away - My House, My Home (Chapter 1)
pairing: meredith grey x cormac hayes word count: 1142 request: yes/no prompt/summary: Meredith couldn't understand Cristina's gift. And no it wasn't down to his accent. Hayes was obnoxious, witty and gave as good as he got. The more Meredith found out about him, the more Meredith got confused about her own feelings. Cormac Hayes and Meredith Grey through season 17 because I still think they deserved better. ao3: saiwriteswords
Tumblr media
Cormac Hayes was insufferable. Meredith couldn’t remember the last time she had wanted to kick someone so badly. In a short amount of time though, Cormac Hayes had created and put himself right at the top of a list of people she wanted to kick. This was her house. Her hospital. Her people. She’d grown up here. Done her residency here. Met her late husband here. Met Zola and had Bailey here. What right did a know-it-all, bald, Irish doctor have to come in and through his weight around? She’d had the same rant going on in her head after morning rounds. It wasn’t like she expected him to just bow down to her but maybe some basic manners from him would be welcome.
Their interaction in the CT room hadn’t helped matters.
“Maybe you haven’t seen many sarcomas.”
Who the hell did he think he was? She wasn’t some idiot intern. She was Meredith Grey. Chief of General Surgery at Grey-Sloan. But she couldn’t kick off at the new guy, especially when she had only just come back and she still wasn’t entirely sure how Bailey felt about her right now. So, she bit back a more scathing comment and instead let him know that this had been her patient a couple of years ago, hoping that would help him understand. Apparently not.
“So, your medical opinion is you did shoddy work?”
Maybe it was motherhood that mellowed her. Or maybe it was just the fact she was used to surgeons with way too big an ego doubting her capabilities. Either way, she knew that there wasn’t a point in fighting with him. Not unless it was for the sake of their patient. Her patient. But there was no way she was going to leave that room without having the last word.
She could deal with surgeons with big egos. Her husband had been one. This wasn’t new territory. Bite your tongue, take a deep breath. Hopefully, she wouldn’t have to work with him too much. She could just make someone else on her service take any cases that he would need a general consult for, right? Perks of the job.
Meredith could have dealt with that thought and gotten through the rest of the day if it wasn’t for the fact that Hayes thought it was a good idea to scare Jamie and her mother with thoughts of a tumour. Was he actually insane? There was no conclusive evidence to even lead them to believe that there was a tumour. This was a kid for crying out loud! A young girl who needed her doctors to ease her worries. A single mother who needed to know that her daughter was going to be okay.
“This had got nothing to do with what I want.”
Then why scare a kid? He worked in paeds, he wasn’t some kind of intern. He should know how these kids worked, and how their parents worked. You had to have a more gentle approach with them. Meredith wasn’t just feeling angry at this point. It had turned into confusion. Why had the hospital hired him? It definitely wasn’t down to his bedside manner, that was for sure.
---
She’d had to go through an entire breathing exercise before she could go into the OR with him. She couldn’t find anyone to vent to, so it was the best that Meredith could do at the time. The minute they got the biopsy back, Meredith was ready to take over the OR. She wasn’t going to wait around and let Hayes take the reigns. Her house. Her home. She was a damn good surgeon and she knew what she was doing.
“You saw that from a scan?”
Meredith wasn’t going to even bother replying to that. Jamie had been her patient and funnily enough, a patient’s medical history did count for something.
---
Post-op Hayes showed a different side to himself. Maybe Meredith could understand why he was in paeds because a quick couple of words from him seemed to put Jamie at ease about her crush. It was a side of him that she hadn’t seen yet. And sure, they’d only been working together for a day but this was a side of him she thought she should have seen sooner considering his speciality.
---
The rest of her day had gone by pretty quickly though. Something she was glad about. And no more run-ins with Hayes, which was a relief. She really didn’t know how to read the new Co-Chief of Paediatric Surgery. She just wanted Alex to come back. She could still help with the cases, just not any of the ones that Hayes was working on.
With her shift finally done, Meredith grabbed her things from the Attendings’ Lounge and headed for the elevator. All she wanted to do was go home to her babies and grab a large glass of wine once they’d gone to bed. Hayes stepping into the elevator was not what she needed. Not at the end of a shift when she was exhausted and was still trying to figure out what Cristiana’s present was. None of the residents could find whatever gift it was she had sent. As exhausted as she was though, there was no way she could leave what had happened today slide. Meredith needed to know what Hayes had been thinking when he had scared Jamie with talks of a potential tumour.
“My wife’s doctors didn’t pay me that respect when she died.”
Oh. His wife. Late wife. Doctors. The puzzle pieces slotted into place for Meredith. She hadn’t known. How was she meant to? He was a widow. Like her. And apparently, the situation hadn’t been helped by his wife’s doctors. Maybe she could understand why he wanted to be upfront with his patients then. He didn’t want them going through the same thing as he had. Meredith still thought his delivery could use some work considering how upset Jamie had been when she’d gotten to the room but Meredith understood now.
“I can see why you were missed.”
She didn’t know what to reply to that and that wasn’t helped by the incessant pinging from her phone. When she finally looked down, it seemed like Cristina thought it was time to finally tell her what her gift was. Only, it wasn’t a thing. Cristiana had sent her a person. A full person. An Irish, Chief of Paeds if she was going to be exact. Meredith felt her stomach do a weird flip and by the time she looked back up, Hayes was walking away. She didn’t have the time to figure out what that weird stomach flip meant. Or maybe she just didn’t want to. Either way, she wanted to go home and have a large glass of wine. And maybe a long chat with Cristina.

An: I don't know why but there's something about writing Jo, heavily pregnant and absolutely done with everything, that is just so fun!
Jo Karev was comfortable. Which at eight months pregnant was not an easy feat. She had a good little setup in her office. She was sitting in a comfy chair and a fan was blowing on her 24/7. She had as much ice pops as she could demand from the interns and Alex had bought her a little ottoman so she could put her feet up.
Although she was still working at this late stage of her pregnancy, she was confined to desk duty. Jo had actually learned to like it as she was doing video appointments, taking care of patient calls, scheduling, and other light duties. Also, she wiggled her way into doing less paperwork because she was pregnant and it stressed her out. As she said, she was comfortable. Therefore anyone asking her to be uncomfortable, aka getting up and walking was not a request she took lightly.
“Your husband's being grumpy,” Meredith said as she entered Jo's office, shutting the door behind her.
“He's always a little grumpy,” Jo said as she turned to her and slurped on a red ice pop.
“Well, today he's acting like a petulance child. He even snipped at me,” Meredith said, giving her a look as Jo sighed.
“It’s the Kidney transplant patient. They're a teenager and they're not following Alex’s protocols for recovery. On top of that they're being a snippy teenager, so it's getting under his skin. Plus he's worried about them and that means he comes off as extra grumpy. But the kid is recovering well and will be discharged in a few days, then Alex will return to his usual semi-grumpy self.”
“I know, but I have a surgery with him this afternoon,” Meredith said as Jo narrowed her eyes, knowing what Meredith's next request would be. “Could you go see him and try and get him in a better mood?”
“I'm not going anywhere, but I'll text him and see if he can visit me for a bit. Then I'll do my best to make him less grumpy.”
“Can you just have sex with him?” Meredith asked, raising an eyebrow at her as they both knew that was Jo's usual fix for a grumpy Alex.
“I can't,” Jo said as she shook her head. “I'm at risk for preterm labor so Carina said no sex until after the baby is born.”
“That sucks,” Meredith said with a sigh.
“Tell me about it,” Jo said with a huff, getting a bit grumpy herself as she quickly texted Alex.
Jo knew he would reply quickly. He had been eagerly checking her texts and calls in the past few weeks just in case she went into labor. Meredith looked over her shoulder as they watched the three little dots appear. However, she frowned at his reply.
‘Jo, I can't, I’m really busy with my caseload today, but I’ll visit for lunch, love you.’
Jo looked back at Meredith to see a frown on her face as well. “Well, you'll have to go visit him then.”
Meredith stood up and gestured for Jo to do the same. However, Jo stayed where she was and gave Meredith a deadpan look before she gestured to her very pregnant belly.
“Meredith I am nine months pregnant.”
“You're eight months pregnant.”
“And on light bed rest.”
“Light duty.”
“I can't just walk the three miles.”
“Three hundred feet.”
“To the Pediatric Ward to cheer up my husband whenever he's grumpy.”
Meredith huffed and crossed her arms at her, which Jo ignored as she finished the rest of her ice pop. That is until Hayes knocked on her office door.
“Hey Jo, do you think you could visit Alex for a bit?” Hayes said with a very innocent shrug as Jo glared at him.
I already asked and she said she's not moving., Meredith said glaring at Jo as Hayes found and Jo just shrugged. There was only so much she could do especially when it came to cheering up her grumpy husband. and these days growing a baby was about her limit.
“Come on Jo, I'll get you a pack of the red ice pops?” Meredith said, trying to bribe her with a smile.
“And I'll get you a little mini fridge and get it down to freezing temperatures so you can have them in your office whenever you like?” Hayes added to the bribe, glancing over at Meredith before looking over at her with the same pleading smile.
Jo sighed as she prepared herself to have to get up and go deal with her grumpy husband. She was still going to try to wiggle her way out of it until she got a notification on her phone. Jo quickly checked it thinking that it was Alex texting her back.
Instead, it was nurse Ginger telling her that Alex was grumpy and asking her if she could fix it. Jo sighed, if the nurses were calling her to complain about Alex, it was only a matter of time before they went to the Chief. Who would certainly not give Alex the same kindness that she would.
“Fine,” Jo said with a sigh as she held her hands out and Hayes helped her up. “But I want it in my office by the time I get back.”
“Done,” Meredith said with a smile as they watched her walk out of the room.
Jo walked her way down the hall, but as she looked back, Hayes and Meredith were smirking at each other. Sending them a glare back, their smiles quickly dropped as Jo smirked as she walked away. Then Jo prepared herself to visit her grumpy husband as her swollen feet protested.
—————————————————————————
Waddling her way down the hallway, Jo looked around for any sign of Alex. She didn't have to look very hard and heard him before she saw him. He was in the hallway yelling at a resident. Rounding the corner as she saw them. It was one of the junior residents, a short young man, who was rather clumsy and forgetful. Regardless of the validity of the reprimand, Jo knew they didn’t deserve such virility. She walked faster as she quickly stepped between the two of them.
“Hey,” Jo yelled, placing her hands on Alex’s chest as he stepped back. “What is going on?”
“This idiot…” Alex started before Jo pushed his chest, although lightly. Alex huffed but took a second to sigh and stopped yelling. “He messed up a central line on a 9-month-old. Now I have to take the kid to surgery to put it back in.”
Alex looked around Jo to glare at the resident. “You are going to be the one to tell the parents about your screw-up and how we now have to do surgery. And you're scrubbing in with me, but you are not allowed to go anywhere near this kid or any other patient for the rest of the day.”
The resident just nodded, their long blonde curls getting into their wide eyes that held back tears. Jo motioned for them to leave and they took the opportunity to run away. Then she grabbed Alex by the collar of his scrub shirt. Her nails dug into the fabric and scraped him as she pulled him down the hall. She waddled as fast as she could, looking for an empty room. She quickly spotted one and dragged him into it.
“What the hell, Alex?!” she asked, putting her hands on her hips as she glared at him.
“That guy was an idiot, Jo!” he said, defending himself as he pointed to the invisible resident.
“I don't fucking care! You have no right to scream at the residents like that. I don't care how incompetent they are or how much they deserve it! You looked like you were about ready to beat him up and I swear to God if you ever lay hands on any one of these residents…”
“I won’t! Not after DeLuca, Jo, you know that,” Alex said with pleading eyes, his lips parted.
“I know,” Jo whispered with a nod.
There was a moment of silence between them. Both of their anger dissipated and they stood staring at each other. Jo saw Alex's eyes return to the kindness that she knew and she sighed as she let go and dropped her arms.
“Come here,” Jo said as she held her hand out to him.
He reached for her outstretched hand and stepped closer to her. Taking it in his, Jo guided it over her belly to the spot where their baby was kicking. Alex smiled as they kicked for him and his shoulders relaxed. They had a moment of quiet together feeling their baby kicking under their hands.
“They had been kicking up a storm there since the moment they heard you yelling.”
“I know they don't like it when we fight,” Alex said with a nod as he rubbed his hands across her belly and the kicking slowed down. “Daddy’s sorry.”
Their baby settled under their father's touch, but Jo was unable to relax. She reached up to cup his face. “What is going on? Meredith said you’ve been grumpy all morning, and even Hayes and the nurses said the same thing. They both asked me to come and check on you.”
Alex stayed quiet as he moved his hands across her belly. Jo moved her hand to his chin as she held it up and forced him to look at her. Although he kept his eyes to the floor. Therefore, she waited. The words would come when he was ready, something she had learned a long time ago. Something that she was the same with.
“Caden is in the ICU.”
“Oh no.”
“He threw a clot and we caught it in time, but he had a heart attack,” Alex whispered as he shook his head and Jo saw his eyes glaze over with tears.
“I'm sorry, Alex,” Jo whispered as she reached up and wrapped her arms around him.
He melted into her, burying his face into her shoulder and Jo just held him. She rubbed his back and held his head. Running her fingers through the hairs at the base of his neck. They had grown and she could wrap the little ringlets around her finger. He needed a haircut, as it was starting to get shaggy, but she would bring that up at a different time. He all held on to her for several minutes and Jo waited for him to pull away first. Finally, he let out a breath and pulled away, only enough to look at her while she still held him in her arms.
Jo reached up tilting her head and closing her eyes as she kissed him. One last reassurance that made him smile against her lips. His hands moved down to her hips and gave them a squeeze as he pulled her into him as much as her belly would allow. Although their baby gave a kick of protest at being squished between them. Alex laughed as he pulled back with a smile.
“Sorry baby didn't mean to squish you,” Alex said as he leaned it down and kissed her belly.
“Come on,” Jo said, pulling him out of the room. “Let's go get some lunch and we can eat it in the daycare with Luna. We both need a break.”
—————————————————————————
Jo got her reward from Meredith an hour later. Alex walked her back to her office after they had lunch with Luna. He opened the door for her and she spotted a red mini fridge with a big red bow. It was sitting on her desk plugged in and humming.
“Who is this from?” Alex asked, touching the bow as Jo sat down in her chair.
“A friend,” Jo said, choosing to remain vague as she opened the fridge door.
The cool air breezed over her hand as she picked up one of the dozens of red ice pops. It was just barely frozen and still mostly liquid. Still, she grabbed a pair of scissors from her cup of pens and snipped off the top. She smiled at the cold red liquid that met her tongue and slurped it up eagerly.
“What for?” Alex asked, raising his eyebrow, his eyes narrowing at her.
“For helping them out,” Jo said with a smile as she ate her ice pop.
Alex scowled as he flicked the bow and Jo groaned. “Don't be an asshole about it, It's from Meredith for helping her on a case.”
“You didn't do surgery did you?” Alex asked, raising his eyebrows with a bit of concern in his eyes.
“No, I'm not an idiot. I helped her get a diagnosis,” Jo said, staring at Alex and smiling at him as she watched his face relax and he smiled back at her.
“Have I ever told you how sexy it is when you're being all confident and medical,” Alex said with a smirk as he leaned in to kiss her.
Jo let him kiss her even as his tongue begged for entrance across her lips. Although she denied it. She pushed his chest away although she kept her hand there, teasing the collar of his scrub shirt.
“Carina said no sex,” Jo said with a whine as she pouted.
“Yeah, but she didn't say anything about kissing,” Alex said as he leaned in and kissed her again.
This time, Jo allowed his tongue to meet hers. They kissed again for quite some time. Getting lost in each other's lips and forgetting to breathe. They gasped for air before locking lips again. Then all too soon Alex pulled back and licked his lips.
“Those icy pops are pretty good,” Alex said, reaching for the doors of the fridge.
Jo swatted his hand away. “And they're all mine!”
“Okay,” Alex said, holding his hands up in defeat before looking back at her. He leaned in to kiss her again, and sucked on her lover's lips.
Finally, he pulled away, and Jo let go of his collar. “Alright, go back to your patience, and I’ll try and keep an eye on Caden from here.”
“Thank you,” Alex said, getting up and reluctantly walking away although he turned back to smile at her as he closed the door. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Jo said with a smile watching him walk away.
—————————————————————————
However, Jo didn't get her official thanks until much later. She was sitting at her desk and playing on her phone when Meredith and Hayes walked into her office. She actually didn't hear them come in until Meredith cleared her throat.
“Hey,” Jo said as she smiled and put her phone down.
“Busy on tock tick?” Hayes asked with a smirk.
“It's TikTok, and I was texting Alex about dinner,” Jo said as she shook her head.
“Don't like any of his suggestions then?” Meredith said, raising her eyebrow at her.
“No, and all of my usual favorites give me really bad heartburn,” Jo said, rubbing her chest absent-mindedly.
“Didn’t Carina send you a prescription for that?” Hayes asked as Jo shrugged.
“Yeah, I'm on this kind of stomach acid inhibitor or something. I try to keep doing small meals, but I'm just so goddamn hungry all the time!”
“I remember what that's like,” Meredith said with a shake of her head. “With Bailey all I wanted to eat was burritos and with Ellis, I could have eaten a whole Mexican restaurant.”
“Yeah, we have a permanent table at Allie's Pizza,” Jo said with a shake of her head, but she smiled.
They all laughed and Jo smiled. “I take it Alex was in a good mood this afternoon?”
“He was,” Meredith said, with a nod. “Thank you again. We were able to do the whole surgery successfully and he even asked me if me and the kids wanted to go to the new kid's movie with him and Luna.”
“Speaking of which,” Hayes said as he handed her another slip of paper. Jo opened it and signed a scrawled note in Haye's handwriting which was the worst of anyone's as he often mixed English and Gaelic letters.
“I don't know what this says?” Jo said other than she pointed to the signatures. “Other than yours and your kid's names here.”
“It's a coupon for a day of free babysitting for you. It’s to be used at any time before or after the baby comes.”
“Thank you,” Jo said, putting the paper in a drawer. “I really appreciate it and I appreciate both of you during the last couple of months. I know it's been stressful for Alex and myself.”
“You're doing alright,” Meredith said, coming around and hugging Jo. “We're just happy that you and baby are safe and doing well.”
“Me too,” Jo said, hugging her back.
“Are we having a party and no one told me?” Alex asked as he came into the room with Luna in his arms. He set her down and Luna ran up to Jo with her arms wide and a huge smile on her face.
“Mommy, Mommy look what I made!” Luna signed, holding up a paper she had scrawled on that barely looked like much of anything other than a couple of circles and lines. Although Luna was very smart, her drawing skills were rather lacking.
“Oh, it's beautiful, What is it, baby?” Jo said as she signed back to her.
“That's a doggy and the new baby and that's me and you and Daddy,” Luna signed, pointing to different colors on the page.
“It's beautiful, baby,” Jo said as she leaned down and kissed her cheeks giving her a quick hug.
“Alright, well we should get going. You guys have a good night and thank you again,” Meredith said as Hayes wrapped his arms around her waist and they both left with matching smiles.
“What was that about?” Alex asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“Oh nothing,” Jo just smiled and grabbed her bag and phone.
She came over to him and greeted him with a kiss, lingering on his lips and kissing him several times.
“Come on, let's go home grumpy pants,” Jo said as she swatted his ass.
“I'm not grumpy, am I Luna?” Alex said and signed to them.
“Daddy's not grumpy,” Luna signed as she ran ahead of the elevator.
“Yeah, Jo, even my girl thinks I'm happy,” Alex said, pointing to her with a smile and a raised eyebrow.
“Okay, let's just go home before something else can disrupt our good mood,” Jo said as Alex wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead as they both walked away.

Random Grey's Anatomy Opinions (Part One)
Owen had a really good entrance to the show as a cool character but ended up as the worst character on the show.
Merluca and Merhayes were better relationships than MerDer.
Cristina and Teddy should've gotten together.
Alex leaving Jo was completely out of character and contradicted multiple seasons of character growth.
Derek badgering Meredith about going out with him in season one was creepy, even if she was attracted to him.
Stephanie was one of the most tragic characters, and she deserved better.
Bailey sticking with pediatrics would've been really interesting because she's so tough and kind.
Japril never should've gotten divorced.
Coming from a person who never watched Station-19, Ben was way more interesting as an anesthesiologist because the show only has the main and side characters as surgeons.
Derek mentoring Brooks was cool, and the writers should've done more with that because their dynamic was fun.

And what about MerNick? Do u ever really liked them? And you're happy if they're endgame?
I have conflicted feelings about Mernick. I’m not gonna lie I don’t like Nick at all and Meredith is also not one of my favorite characters so I think that’s why I honestly don’t care lol. Also I’m still angry about merhayes. If Mernick being endgame means that Nick goes to Boston and we don’t have to see him anymore then I support it lol. I will say I do think Nick is good with the kids and the Zola and Nick scenes did redeem him for me a bit. I guess I’m just indifferent about them. I won’t be mad or anything if they are endgame and at this point I think it makes the most sense but if they aren’t endgame it won’t affect me.

“This is a joke right?”
It’s well past ten o’clock, I just got done with my shift at Grey Sloan Memorial a little while ago and now I’m standing on Hayes’ doorstep like a mad woman. Cormac stood there in his dark sweats and white t-shirt looking as handsome as ever.
“Meredith told you.” He opened the door wider for me to step in and I did. Cormac led us over to his couch for us to have this discussion he so obviously wanted to avoid.
“Of course she did, you resigned.”
“I had too.”
“So your plan was to leave without saying goodbye?” I’m trying my best to keep it together in front of him right now. Cormac and I dated for a couple months but his sons had a hard time coming to terms with their dad moving on from their mom so we decided to call it quits between us but even after that, we’ve been there for each other when we needed someone.
“Yes and I know it was a stupid plan but I couldn’t tell you goodbye.”
“Why not, we’re still friends Hayes.” He scoffed lightly and reached for my hand, interlacing our fingers together; something he loved to do when we were together.
“You and I both know that there’s more to us than just friends. I knew that if I had talked to you about it you would’ve given me more reasons to stay and believe me, it wouldn’t have taken much convincing either because it’s you. You’re the only reason I need to stay in Seattle.” His soft eyes flickered between mine and my lips as he spoke.
“Then why leave?”
“The boys aren’t settled here and it’s been more than a year. They’re still grieving the loss of their mother which made it difficult for them here in Seattle. I don’t want to leave you Y/N but I need to do what’s best for my boys.”
“Of course, I get it but you should’ve told me about it, I would’ve understood.” Still staring at me, Cormac gently swiped his thumb against the back of my hand as I gently pressed my shoulder against his.
“I know and I apologise for you having to find out from Meredith instead of me.”
“I forgive you for that. Just know that you and the boys will always have a home in Seattle.” We both leaned in closer until our foreheads touched. My eyes fluttered shut as we both just stayed like that for however long.
“If I had known saying goodbye to you would be this difficult I would’ve left sooner.”
“Then you would’ve had to deal with an extremely pissed off me through FaceTime.” We both laughed because it’s true, if he had done that I would’ve expressed my anger through a phone call. Our noses bumped together a couple times, our breaths fanning against each other’s lips.
I’m going to miss you.”
“Likewise Hayes.”
Hayes made the first move to close the remaining distance between us in a bittersweet kiss and I wasted no time in returning the same amount of passion. There’s no denying that Cormac and I still love each other and if things were different, we would’ve worked out.
“You can’t kiss a lady like that as a goodbye doctor Hayes.”
“Then don’t think of it as a goodbye, think of it as a see you later.”

I Will Wait For You - Merhayes
pairing: meredith grey x cormac hayes word count: 1395 request: yes/no prompt/summary: meredith opens up to some people about her split with cormac and realises that maybe she cared more than she was letting on a.n: still not over them. will never get over them. ao3: saiwriteswords
Tumblr media
“Panic attacks?”
“Yes.”
“So, you two are on pause or what?”
“I don’t know! No? I don’t think so. I think we’re just kind of… done… not dating. Not on pause. No expectations of anything else happening. We’re just friends again I guess…” It felt like a stab to her stomach as Meredith admitted the reality of the situation to her sisters.
They were done before they’d even begun and under any other circumstances, Meredith would have been angry. She would have been fuming at the situation. But how could she blame him when he was just trying to look out for his son? Wouldn’t she have done the same thing? She knew she would have. There was no other choice. But that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt her. That she didn’t wish there was some other way that they could make this work. But there wasn’t and wishful thinking had never gotten her anywhere before. So, what was the point in starting now?
“Are you okay though?” Maggie’s tone was softer than Amelia’s. Less intrusive and that almost made Meredith feel worse. She didn’t want people to pity her. Especially over a guy.
“Yeah. I mean, we never really started anything anyway and his kids should come first.”
And that fact alone didn’t help either. He was a good Dad. A great one. Why wouldn’t she want to be with a guy that wasn’t only good with kids but also had kids himself? She never had to worry about being pulled away when one of hers had a stomach bug or a last-minute dance recital she might have forgotten about because he got it and it had made everything so much easier. Her kids were the most important thing in her life but it also made dating incredibly difficult. Cormac understood that there were always going to be three little people that would come before him because to him there would always be two teenagers that would come before her. And was exactly what this situation was: Cormac needing to make sure his kids were okay before anything else.
--- --- --- --- ---
“Do you want me to come over and kick his ass?”
“You’ve never even met the guy, Alex.”
Alex shrugged through the video call, “Doesn’t matter. When’s that ever stopped me?”
“The last thing me or Izzie need is you in jail… again. It’s like I said, it’s fine. It’s whatever.”
“Sure. That’s why you rang me at 2 am,” he deadpanned, and Meredith didn’t really have an answer to that. “Seriously, Mer, how are you actually feeling about this. Because when Riggs and DeLuca broke up with you, you didn’t care.”
“First of all, they both didn’t break up with me. And second of all, it’s not that I didn’t care.” Meredith tried to argue with him.
Alex just rolled his eyes, “DeLuca definitely broke up with you and Riggs’ ex came back from the dead. Sorry I wasn’t more specific, and you didn’t care. I’m not saying that you didn’t care about them, but you didn’t care when you guys broke up. But you care with this Hayes guy.”
“It doesn’t even matter if I care or not.” Meredith blurted out. “It doesn’t matter because we can’t be together because he has to take care of his kids and you can’t even hate him for a reason like that. And maybe I shouldn’t even be trying to date again because I had my one great love and maybe this in the universe trying to slap me back into place for asking for more.”
A string of unsuccessful dates and relationships had led Meredith to these thoughts in the dark of her bedroom on way too many nights. She knew that she’d never find a love like Derek again. Maybe she’d been stupid to think that she would ever been in another relationship again. It’s not like her life was completely unfulfilled. She had her kids, her career, two sisters that drove her crazy, but she wouldn’t do without them, a nephew, good friends. She had a lot more than most people; a lot more than she had growing up. And there were days Meredith hated herself for wanting more. For wanting someone to wake up next to in the morning again. Derek had been enough. More than enough to last a lifetime but a lifetime with him wasn’t what she ended up getting. And Meredith had eventually gotten her head around that fact. It had taken a while and there were still split second when she woke up in the morning and thought that he would be next to her.
She had managed to accept the thought of dating again, and as much as she hated to admit it, Alex was right. Hayes was the only guy she had actually cared about when he broke up with her. He was the only guy that she had actually managed to imagine a future with. With DeLuca and Riggs, she’d liked them, she could see herself with them for a few months at a time. But it had been difficult for her to see a long-term future. With Hayes, it seemed so easy. The thought didn’t scare her enough to want to run away.
“The universe isn’t slapping you back into place, Mer.” Alex softened his tone. He knew what Meredith was like when she got like this.
“Then what exactly is it doing?” She glared at him.
“When you met Derek, he was a married man.”
“Yeah and I was the slutty intern, I get it.” Sometimes it felt like she could never get away from that.
“No, I’m not on about that. He was married and then Addison turned up and you fought for him, Mer. You wanted to be with Derek, so you fought for him and it worked out in the end.”
Frustrated, Meredith ran a hand through her hair. “I can’t really fight for Hayes when he’s doing this for his kids, Alex. Even I know that there’s a line there that you don’t cross.”
“Mer, do you like this guy?”
Meredith stayed silent for a minute, making Alex impatient. “Mer?”
“Yes.” She finally admitted stubbornly.
“Enough to wait for him?”
“He doesn’t want me to wait, Alex. Doesn’t that tell you everything?”
“Because he cares about you!”
“You don’t know that!”
Alex felt like hitting his head against a wall. He loved Meredith but she could be so stubborn sometimes that talking to her was like navigating a hostage situation. “Mer, I’m a guy. I know how guys think. And I might not know him, but Hayes doesn’t sound like the type of person that just lets anyone into his life. He sounds like he cares about you. A lot. But do you care about him enough to wait?”
“Alex, he-“
“I’m not asking you what he said, Mer. I’m asking, do you care enough to wait?”
Mer bit her lip. She knew what the answer was. That wasn’t something she needed to think about but the reality of it scared her. It scared her that she cared enough to do. It scared her that she could wait for him, and it might not amount to anything.
“Yes,” her voice was smaller than before, and Alex knew that it wasn’t an easy answer for her to give.
“Then tell him that, Mer. Tell him that you’re willing to wait and give him time with his kids until they’re all ready because you’re gonna end up regretting it if you don’t.”
“And if it doesn’t work? If his kids are never ready?”
“I didn’t know you were someone who gave up before they even tried, Mer.” Alex goaded her slightly. It wasn’t an easy task to get Meredith Grey to do something that she didn’t want to do.
“So, I wait?”
“Only if you want to, Mer.”
And she did want to. She wanted to hold onto hope that there was a chance the two of them could be together. That Liam and Austin might be okay with their dad dating again one day. So, Meredith decided that she was going to wait, and she was going to tell Cormac that because as much as she hated having to be vulnerable in front of anyone, she cared about Cormac a hell of a lot more.
