The Heat of You

She hadn’t meant to listen in on their conversation.

It wasn’t Hermione’s fault that they’d chosen her corner of the library to have their little chat.

It also wasn’t her fault that she couldn’t make a sound without embarrassing herself and either of them.

Hermione wasn’t a snitch, despite her reputation as a do-gooder. She adored Neville. He deserved some damn release after everything they’d all gone through…even if it was with her.

Hermione couldn’t really blame the girl. Neville had filled out in all of the right places over the past year and a half; that, coupled with his triumph over Nagini, had worked wonders for his confidence. Admirers from all backgrounds flocked to the painfully shy Gryffindor. With each encounter, he stood a little taller, hunched his shoulders a little less inward. He walked with purpose, rather than hurrying along the edges of corridors like he used to do.

She originally had half a mind to ask him to Slughorn’s party later that month, with them being friends already and, due to her and Ron's fizzled romance, she had certain needs she wouldn’t mind some help attending to. But then he had to go and attract the attention of a certain bob-haired Slytherin.

“Look, Pansy, you know we don’t have to act on any of this yet—”

“Shut it, Longbottom. I’m not going to say sorry for treating you like dirt all these years, or for attempting to give Potter up, when you know as well as I do that we were all ready for the fighting to stop. What I will say is that I’m glad it’s you.”

“You are?”

Even Hermione could hear the hope laced in his words. She couldn’t see them, but she imagined he looked down at Pansy with a certain amount of longing, not too dissimilar from the looks Hermione had once received from Ron.

“I’m not going to repeat myself. Show me yours, I’ll show you mine, and then you’re coming with me to my room.”

Hermione perked up as she heard the rustling of clothing, which was followed shortly by some murmuring and a loud exhale.

“See? I told you. Let’s go.”

She finally got a glimpse of the two as they emerged from behind the bookcase and rushed past Hermione’s table. Pansy paid her no mind, a smirk firm on her face, but Neville’s eyes rounded as he noticed his housemate watching. Hermione raised two fingers in salute and blessing.

“How very sporting of you, Granger.”

No amount of experience from her time on the run could have prepared her for the voice of Draco Malfoy emerging from beside her. She jerked so hard against her chair that it teetered precariously, her hands flailing to grab onto the table for purchase.

A swift hand righted her, and it remained along the back of her chair as Malfoy settled in next to her.

Great.

“To what do I owe the displeasure?” she snidely asked, leaning as far as she could away from him without actually getting up.

“You’re welcome, by the way—”

“For what? Scaring me half to death and doing what any decent person would do when I almost fell?”

The amused look on his face didn’t change. If anything, it only grew more pronounced as his eyes scanned her from head to toe. Hermione thought she would have felt chilled at the icy gaze, but it was warmth, instead, that swept along in the wake of his consideration. Heat bloomed underneath her skin, inviting, comforting, and thoroughly unexpected.

What was he doing?

“Stop that!”

“Stop what?” He tilted his head in what seemed honest confusion.

“Stop whatever it is that you’re doing to make me feel…feel—”

How in the world was she supposed to explain what she felt like without sounding completely daft? The rush of blood to her face was her own doing.

This time it was Malfoy’s turn to smirk as he noticed her blush.

“I’m not doing anything, though it does feel awfully warm in here, doesn’t it? Maybe you’re the one casting a spell on me,” he suggested.

As much as every fiber of her being screamed at her to stay seated in close proximity to the git, Hermione shoved her chair back with a loud screech that drew the eyes of everyone in sight. The arm that had been propped behind her fell loosely to his side, but he didn’t look rebuffed.

“Leaving so soon?” he asked.

“Thanks in no part to you,” she snapped, struggling to gather her belongings into her bag.

She had almost gotten everything into place when he reached out with her final book in hand, a look of innocence on his face. Their fingers brushed as she snatched it away from him, sending a spark straight up her arm to her chest. They both jolted at the sensation, eyes widening. Hermione came to her senses first, shaking her head as she closed the flap of her satchel.

“The air’s too dry in here.” Static didn’t explain the thumping of her heart, or the way she felt an irrational need to sit down again.

She didn’t stay to listen to his reply. If she had, she would have seen the determined set of his chin and the hand that had touched her in a fist against his chest, as if soothing a deep ache that mirrored her own.

As soon as the door was shut behind them, Draco turned to him. 

‘What the fuck were you thinking, giving me those potion phials, Potter?’

‘Oh, er…’ Harry was wrong footed. Was Draco angry? He sounded agitated, but his eyes were bright. ‘I thought you wanted them,’ he finished lamely.

‘Of course I wanted them, but that's not the point. Have you any idea the kind of trouble you could get in?’

More of the kind he was in already, Harry thought morously.

‘You're not untouchable, you know, especially if what you've said is true about how your career's going. And I know you think you want to leave the Aurors, but it will hardly do for you to get fired now, will it?’ Draco continued his lecture.

Harry could let the jab about his career slide, but now he had to say something. ‘I do want to leave the Aurors. There are some things more important than preserving my professional reputation.’

‘Oh, so you're happy to get dropped from this operation, from my protection detail, are you?’

One or both of them had taken a step closer while they were speaking, and they were now almost toe to toe. Harry looked into Draco's sparkling silver eyes and felt the bottom drop out of his world. Draco was spectacular, even when they were fighting. Were they fighting? He didn't know any more.

‘For fuck’s sake, Potter,’ Draco snapped. ‘Why in Salazar’s name are you glowing like that?’

A Grindeldore fic, canon compliant except for soulmate AU elements. Dumbledore visits Grindelwald in prison near the end of their lives. I love the interactions between them, how they know and understand each other so well even after everything that's happened and so many years apart. The flashbacks are woven in seamlessly, and I really like the dynamic that they had as young men. Knowing that they were destined to be soulmates in a world where that's a known thing that exists, and it still went the way that it did in canon, makes the whole thing just a little more heartbreaking, but the ending is actually kind of sweet.

This lovely Narlily fic was gifted to me yesterday in the HP Soulmates Secret Santa, and I'm so excited to gush about it to y'all! I love the trope where you see in black and white until you meet your soulmate, and what was done with it here is so interesting. Narcissa's feelings about soulmates evolve throughout the fic, from expecting hers to be a guy her parents would approve of to rejecting the idea entirely to tentatively accepting it by the end.

vaguely coming up with ideas the Weasley bingo since i need to do at least one of the squares

reading a lot of starker fanfic (Peter Parker/Tony Stark) just because i came across them one day and they hit a lot of boxes for me so I've been exploring that tag on ao3 and tumblr

I tried to play genshin impact for a few hours while i was at my mom's house for thanksgiving before i got bored idk maybe if i try again at home I could get into it

it has a large fandom presence but from what i know it's a pretty annoying fandom when it comes to what you 'can' ship and thats the worst imo

watching alot of a children's idol anime (aikatsu) because it's chill and relaxing

hmmm i auditioned for another cover group for english idol songs don't know if i'll get in but if I do that will be fun

i think that's about it! other then like pacing and thinking about certain Percy ships
